Table of Contents

A classic for tourists, the city sightseeing bus is one of the best ways to see Cape Town quickly! You can buy a single or two-day ticket, and explore much of the city.

The red bus tour takes you through the city centre, and up to the base of Table Mountain , while the blue drives along the most beautiful stretches of coastline, and over to the city wine region! Hop off at any of the stops you’re interested in, and back on whenever you’re ready.

Küra and I went on this tour to explore our own city from a tourist’s perspective the other day, and it was just lovely! So I’ve got all the info you need, from tickets and times to highlights of the different tour options.

Cape Town Sightseeing Hop-On Hop-Off Tour

Here are some quick details on the sightseeing tour, with everything you need to know about where, when and how.

red bus tour prices

The red bus at its Groot Constantia stop on the Purple route

Starting point

Ticket Office, Dock Rd, Victoria & Alfred Waterfront

That’s right in front of the Two Oceans Aquarium , another great Cape Town highlight!

You can either buy your tickets online here or at the Waterfront starting point. If you’re planning to explore during off-season, both options are equally good! If, however, it’s busy season, you’ll find a longer, slower line for the in-person ticket purchase.

If you’re taking a spontaneous trip and want to get your tickets on the day, you’ll want to buy them in person – online sales must be made a day or more in advance. And if you want to buy them months in advance, that works too! Tickets can be cancelled or rescheduled up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund.

A ticket gets you access to all four tour routes, and you can hop on and off as often as you like.

Single day ticket: Adults ~ R300 ($17) | Children under 17 ~ R160 ($9)

Two-day ticket: Adults ~ R390 ($22) | Children under 17 ~ R265 ($15)

First departure: 08:15

Last departure: 17:15

Some routes leave a little later – I’d recommend arriving at 08:30 earliest, and then you won’t have to wait longer than a few minutes for your next bus.

Buses run every 20 minutes (and some every 15 minutes in summer), so you won’t have any long waits at your various stops.

Different tour routes to choose from

Depending on what you’re interested in seeing and exploring, the different tours are very important to choose between! You can tick off more than one in a day, though, and they share a few stops, so you don’t have to stick with just one. Still, it’s important to come prepared.

Red city tour

This is the best tour route if you’re particularly interested in the central loop of Cape Town. It’s also the route that stops at the Table Mountain cable station, which is one of the city’s top attractions!

Long Street: The long-standing hub of Cape Town’s CBD , Long Street is pretty iconic. It’s the best place to be for a fun night out, but during the day you’ll find it’s mostly cafes, proper curio stores, and the like. Well worth a stop if just for the beautiful street art and pretty facades.

red bus tour prices

Table Mountain Cableway:   This, of course, is one of the absolute most important stops in the city! Cape Town is spread out around our beloved Table Mountain, and its long mountain range is home to some of the most unique and beautiful flora in the world. You can trek up one of the mountain’s hiking trails – it’s a magnificent experience, but challenging.

The easier and more popular option is the cableway. This will take you up to the edge of Table Mountain and provide incredible views and some lovely paths crisscrossing the mountaintop.

red bus tour prices

Camps Bay: This is a beautiful coastal neighbourhood where you can have lunch overlooking the beach, and then pop into the chilly ocean water for a quick dip! This is also a favourite high-end area to stay in for tourists.

Green Point: This stop is right at the very beginning of the long coastal footpath, the Sea Point Promenade. A lovely and popular route to walk! It’s also right by the entrance to Green Point Park, a large and beautiful park with a lake, kiddies playparks, and lots of spots to picnic and relax.

red bus tour prices

Blue city tour

Taking you on a wider loop, the blue tour takes you through Constantia and Hout Bay, and round the coast through Camps Bay. A perfect chance to see our city’s natural range!

Kirstenbosch: One of the world’s greatest botanic gardens, Kirstenbosch is really a must-see. It’s home to hundreds of species of fynbos and forest vegetation and is the only place in the world where you can find many of these plants. A fantastically beautiful place!

red bus tour prices

World of Birds: A giant aviary of birds and monkeys, this is a pretty magical place. Many of their enclosures are open-air, and the birds stay here because it’s home. They’re also a hospital and orphanage for abandoned birds, and work on breeding endangered species. With over 400 species across 4 hectares of land, you’ll have loads to see.

Hout Bay Harbour: This is a beautiful harbour with some of the best fish and chips you can find, seals lazing about, and brightly coloured boats moored. It’s also the neighbourhood where you can set off on a kayaking trip or a seal snorkelling trip . We’ve done both, and can highly recommend either one!

red bus tour prices

Camps Bay: This tour, too, takes you to one of the best beaches in Cape Town ! In winter, grab a coffee along the promenade and clamber up the beachside rocks for the best view. In summer, take a dip!

Purple tour

The Purple route is a part of the Blue route – it’s its own thing, but you’ll just stay in the Blue route bus and jump off at the purple stops.

Its other name is the wine route, and it’s the perfect opportunity to go wine tasting with friends, family or your loved one. This way you don’t have to drive, and you don’t need to call an Uber to take you the short distances between vineyards.

Groot Constantia: This is the oldest wine farm in Constantia (Cape Town’s vineyard-covered central neighbourhood). Established in [ ], it’s the best place to learn about South Africa’s wine history, with a museum dedicated to that past! The wine tasting is also one of the best we’ve had, with five exquisite wines enjoyed under the trees. Be sure to stroll along the vineyard and visit the duck pond, too.

red bus tour prices

Eagles Nest: Another big favourite, Eagles Nest is the best wine farm for families. The wine is excellent, and they’ve got plenty of space and opportunity for the kids to play while the adults enjoy their tasting. The setting, too, is really beautiful.

red bus tour prices

Beau Constantia: Beau Constantia is possibly the fanciest wine farm in Cape Town. The wine tasting space is a large glass box overlooking the Constantia wine valley. The food here is amazing – very high end. And of course, so is the wine! It’s pricey, so I wouldn’t necessarily visit if you’re just looking for a fun time with friends or family. But it might be just the spot for a special date.

Cape Town red bus tour – which one will you choose?

There you have it, all the information you’ll need to choose your favourite red bus tour route. We did the blue and purple tour, and it was fantastic. We did choose to do it on the hottest day Cape Town has experienced in years, so that wasn’t the best decision in the world, but I’m sure you’ll find a better day for such a trip!

Let me know if you do the red bus tour and what you think of it. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

And if you’re looking for exciting things to do in and around Cape Town, check out our post on the Franschhoek wine tram – it’s a fantastic way to spend a day.

A DAY ON THE CAPE TOWN CITY SIGHTSEEING RED BUS

Red City Sightseeing Bus

We’ve all seen them, lumbering through the city while they carry khaki-adorned tourists. The Cape Town City Sightseeing open-top red busses are an institution in the Mother City, ferrying travellers to our many attractions across the Cape Peninsula.

City Sightseeing South Africa  operates four different tours in Cape Town, including the Red City Tour , the Blue Mini Peninsula Tour , the Yellow Downtown Tour  and the Purple Wine Tour .  My companions and I (a hearty group of seven Cape Town locals) opted for the Blue Mini Peninsula Tour, which takes a circular route around the Table Mountain National Park, starting from the V&A Waterfront.

V&A-Waterfront

Key stops along the way include Kirstenbosch National Gardens, the Constantia Winelands, Hout Bay and Camps Bay, amongst others. The main reason for our selection, however, was not that the Blue tour is the longest of the four on offer. But rather that it is the one that could take us to the Purple Wine Tour, and to the famous Groot Constantia Wine Estate – one of Cape Town’s Big 7  attractions.

kirstenbosch

Buying a one-day ticket for R180 (just R160 if you buy online ) allows you to use a hop-on-hop-off system, not only for the tour you take, but for any tour on the day. Thus, my party was able to take the Blue bus to Constantia Nek and then change over to the Purple bus and tackle the wine farms. And tackle them we did! After a short drive, we hop-off at the Groot Constantia estate. A R45 (per person) wine tasting soon followed and before I knew it we were hopping back on the Purple bus and en route to Eagles’ Nest .

Bus2

Eagles’ Nest is a hidden gem in the Constantia Winelands, and its secret garden-appeal drew me in immediately. Groot Constantia is clearly aimed at catering for busloads for foreign tourists (we saw no less than three buses full of Chinese visitors during our short time there), but Eagles’ Nest felt more homely; more welcoming. We enjoyed another tasting here and also opted for a Deli Cuts Platter and an Artisan Cheese Board (R130 and R150 respectively – see menu here ). It was time to leave, but after another short bus ride (to the end of the Purple Wine Tour), we walked up the driveway of Beau Constantia , and enjoyed a third and final tasting whilst enjoying arguably the best views from a tasting room in all of the Cape Winelands; it was quite simply breathtaking.

eagles-nest-

And so ended our Purple Wine Tour – which was probably a good thing – but the day wasn’t over yet. After a short wait for the next bus, we rejoined the Blue Mini Peninsula Tour and continued on our way towards the Imizamo Yethu  township, adjacent to the more affluent suburb of Hout Bay. Onwards we then went, through Camps Bay, Sea Point and back to the Two Oceans Aquarium at the V&A.

red-bus-top

Seated high atop ‘big red’, my group and I listened to the on-board audio commentary as we passed through the city we all call home, seeing things from a different perspective (literally). The commentary is available in 15 different languages, including Afrikaans and Zulu, making me wonder why we don’t see more locals touring the city. But as I looked around, I saw not only sun-screen pasted faces and wide-brimmed hats. I saw couples and families, clearly local, and all of them were enjoying exploring Cape Town as much as me.

How to Choose the Right Red Bus Tour for Your Sightseeing Adventure

If you’re planning a sightseeing adventure in a new city, one of the best ways to explore and learn about your destination is by taking a red bus tour. These tours offer a convenient and informative way to see the highlights of a city, all while enjoying the comfort of an open-top bus. However, with so many different red bus tour options available, it can be overwhelming to choose the right one for your needs. In this article, we will guide you through the process of selecting the perfect red bus tour for your sightseeing adventure.

Researching Tour Routes

Before booking a red bus tour, it’s essential to research the available tour routes in your chosen city. Different cities have different attractions and landmarks, so make sure to select a route that covers the places you want to visit. Look for tours that include popular sights such as museums, historical landmarks, famous neighborhoods, and iconic viewpoints.

Furthermore, consider whether you prefer a hop-on-hop-off style tour or a guided tour. Hop-on-hop-off tours allow you to get off at any stop along the route and explore at your own pace before hopping back on another bus later. On the other hand, guided tours provide live commentary from knowledgeable guides who can provide insights into each stop along the way.

Checking Timetables and Duration

Once you’ve identified potential red bus tours that cover your desired attractions, it’s essential to check their timetables and duration. Some tours run on fixed schedules with specific departure times throughout the day, while others may have buses departing more frequently.

Consider how much time you have available for sightseeing and choose a tour that fits within your schedule. Additionally, pay attention to whether there are any time restrictions or limitations on each stop during hop-on-hop-off tours. Some attractions may require advanced booking or have limited visiting hours, so ensure they align with your planned itinerary.

Reading Reviews and Recommendations

To get a better idea of the quality and experience offered by different red bus tours, it’s crucial to read reviews and recommendations from previous customers. Look for testimonials on the tour company’s website or popular review platforms such as TripAdvisor. Pay attention to feedback regarding the tour guides, overall customer service, cleanliness of the buses, and the accuracy of the provided information.

Additionally, consider seeking recommendations from friends, family members, or fellow travelers who have visited the same city before. Personal recommendations can provide valuable insights and help you make an informed decision about which red bus tour to choose.

Comparing Prices and Additional Inclusions

Before finalizing your red bus tour booking, it’s essential to compare prices and any additional inclusions offered by different tour operators. While price shouldn’t be the sole deciding factor, it’s worth considering whether a higher-priced tour offers any added benefits such as skip-the-line access to attractions or complimentary extras like boat cruises or walking tours.

However, be cautious about extremely cheap tours that may compromise on quality or skip important attractions. It’s important to strike a balance between affordability and value for money when selecting your red bus tour.

Choosing the right red bus tour is crucial for ensuring an enjoyable sightseeing adventure in a new city. By researching tour routes, checking timetables and duration, reading reviews and recommendations, as well as comparing prices and additional inclusions, you can make an informed decision that caters to your preferences and maximizes your exploration experience. So go ahead – book your red bus tour today and get ready to discover all the wonders your destination has to offer.

Red Buses In Glacier National Park, Montana

In 1914, Glacier National Park was the first park in America to offer motorized tours. White Motor Company built Model 706, a bus that was used throughout the national park system.  Glacier Park is the only national park still using the vehicles.

From Glacier National Park : Each bus can hold 17 people and one driver with 4 across on bench seating.  It's a very snug ride. The Red Bus Tours usually sell out every day.  Red Bus Tours start up for the year in June.  If you're planning a trip to Glacier National Park, make sure to reserve your seat by clicking here . Tour prices (at the time of writing) are running from $62 for adults all the way up to $118 per adult, depending on which tour you have chosen.

The Red Buses Are Being Overhauled To Keep Them On The Road

From The Flathead Beacon , Xanterra Parks & Resorts have been busy rebuilding the buses over the last few years, despite delays from the Covid 19 Pandemic. 33 of the 35 original buses are still in use today.  One was wrecked, and one has been preserved by the National Park Service.

What Is Being Done To The Buses?

Quite a bit.  Buses are getting new engines and chassis along with a more effective heating system for the driver and the passengers.  New, more historically accurate dashboards have been installed and the drivers now, finally, have a cup holder.  LED lights have also been installed on the brake lights and turn signals.

Driving around Glacier is a spectacular way to see the sights – particularly along Going-to-the-Sun Road – but drivers may sometimes miss out when they're behind the wheel. Let someone else do the driving by taking a famed Red Bus Tour. These buses – chauffeured by drivers known as "Jammers" – date back to the 1930s, and feature canvas rollback tops that offer unencumbered views of the surrounding landscape. Plus, each bus accommodates just 16 passengers.

Tour Duration and Details

There are nine tour routes in total. Tours depart from Many Glacier Hotel, Swiftcurrent Motor Inn, St. Mary Lodge and Rising Sun Motor Inn on the east side. On the west side, you can catch the tour at Lake McDonald Lodge, Apgar Visitor Center and the West Glacier KOA. Additional departure points may be available for select tours. Depending on which route you take, you could explore popular sights like Lake McDonald Lodge, Logan Pass , St. Mary Valley and Two Medicine . You may also get to see the alpine areas of Going-to-the-Sun Road. Tours run during the peak season – typically from June through September or October – but exact dates will vary depending on the weather. Duration also varies by tour: They can last from about 2.5 hours to eight hours or more.

Fees vary based on tour, activity duration and departure point. For short tours, expect tickets to start at $50 for adults and $25 for children. Daylong tours cost about $110 for adults and $55 for children.

Recent Reviews

Tour-takers commented that the bus is a great way to see the park. They added that it's much more relaxing than driving yourself, but note that seating can be a bit cramped. Many travelers also complimented the guides for their great driving and informative commentary. Others warn that you will need to book tickets well in advance as tours sell out quickly.

Note: There are no physical nor virtual tickets for the tour. You will check in for your tour at your pickup point's front desk or concierge desk at least 15 minutes before the tour departs. For schedules and to purchase tickets, visit the Glacier National Park Lodges' website .

You could try ensuring your cc's have either Verified By Visa (extra layer of security, free) or whatever Mastercard has...but lately, even with these in place, the outfit processing CC transactions for RZD has been pretty much rejecting all cc's at least in US...

Best bet may be as Marssa indicates...I actually thought when I checked them out their price were almost a pass thru of RZD, BUT, pretty sure their site will also require the extra security on your CC as well...

red bus tour prices

Your other alternative is if you know someone with a Canadian, UK, or Euro card to buy them

Thank you all for your advice. Intourist is in fact the cheapest of the resellers but I have had no luck trying to buy my tickets with them. It keeps telling me my CC is not activated. I tried several different CC, registered with Verified by Visa and MasterCode for Mastercard. It simply won't go thru, none of them will. I am not ready to absorb the mark-ups from Real Russia. We are considering waiting until we get there to buy the tickets at the station but don't know if we're being naive about the availability. Even if the Red Arrow is full, could we get some daytime tickets instead? What do you think of our chances considering we need 4 tickets? Thanks!

I'm sure you'll be able to buy SOME tickets - there's a lot of trains - but what you should be aware of is that since recently the RZD tickets become more expensive as the travel date approaches. You can get a rough idea of what to expect by comparing the prices for your days with prices for the same train for today or tomorrow.

What I understand from your reply is that if I wait to buy the tickets, they will be more expensive the closer the date, is that right? Would the increase be as much as to make it worthwhile to pay the mark-ups of real russia for instance?

"You can get a rough idea of what to expect by comparing the prices for your days with prices for the same train for today or tomorrow."....and compare the prises with ticket prices at real russia to see whether it would make sence to wait and buy tickets closet to the date or buy them now from real russia with some overhead.

Sorry Marassa, I violated you IPR )))))

> if I wait to buy the tickets, they will be more expensive the closer the date, is that right?

> Would the increase be as much as to make it worthwhile to pay the mark-ups of real russia

Sorry, I have no idea. You can check it yourself by looking at how much the Red Arrow tickets are for today on rzd.ru as compared to in a week or in two weeks.

I tried emailing the intourist people and actually got a response from them although it didn't help in the end. I gave up this morning and finally bought my tickets thru trainsrussia.com The mark-up was about 25% of the price so not ideal but not as bad as Real Russia's was. I am now waiting to be emailed my etickets which they said should take about 48hrs.

Thank you all for taking the time to respond to my questions. :)
