Tiger spotting on Indian safari

India Safaris

India is an incredibly diverse country for scenery and wildlife, containing steamy jungles and rain forests, large deserts, wide open plans and vast tracts of remote, unexplored mountains. In terms of safaris, India has a number of destinations that will give the enthusiastic wildlife spotter a lot to get excited about. Whilst India doesn’t have the density of large mammals on display that you can find in parts of Africa, it does have some unique species that you simply can’t see anywhere else in the world. Tourism is fairly well developed in India too, with a number of safari lodges and safari tour companies laying on “traditional” African style safari experiences, albeit with an Indian twist.

With over 360 species of mammals and 1,200 bird species, India has one of the richest biodiversity counts in the world. The signature species of India are tiger, leopard, elephant, rhino , bear, buffalo, monkey and antelope, all of which roam the central and southern plains. These animals are complemented by lions in a couple of Indian national parks in the east, where you can see lions, tigers and leopard coexisting if you’re particularly lucky on your safari! Further a field, if you fancy a mountain safari the Himalayas are home to the enigmatic snow leopard, yaks, blue sheep and the two humped camel. As such it’s no surprise that India as a wildlife spotting destination has really taken off in the past couple of decades, making it a credible alternative to a safari in Africa if you want to try something a bit different.

Despite such riches of wildlife, habitat destruction and conflict with humans is becoming an increasing problem, and one which the government is trying to tackle by creation of more protected areas and national parks. Existing national parks in India tend to be out of the way with poor infrastructure and roads to get there. Pubic transport is often not an option, though you can get to the nearest town and take a taxi or auto-rickshaw from there to the park. Most hotels near national parks will be able to arrange transfers to the park, where you’ll be able to organize a jeep tour (or elephant, boat, walking, camel etc.). Bear in mind that the price of a safari arranged at a national park are one of the few things in India that are non-negotiable, and are generally higher for non-Indian residents.

India Safari Highlights

  • Ride an elephant out into the Brahmaputra floodplains to get up close and personal with families of Indian one horned rhino in Kaziranga National Park, Assam.
  • Take a tiger safari to try and spot an elusive huge cat in one of India’s premier national parks – Bandhavgarh, Corbett, Ranthambore or Kahna.
  • Explore the swamps and wetlands of the Sundarbans National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site that’s home to the world’s largest tidal mangrove forest, a unique culture…and the Bengal tiger.

Best Time To Go On Safari In India

The best time to go on safari in India will vary according to where in the country you’re planning on going. Generally speaking India has three seasons – the hot, the monsoon and the cool, with the time each season starts and ends depending on how far north or south you are. The cool season is the most pleasant time to visit India, and starts once the monsoons finish, running from October to January. From February onward the heat starts to rise across the country, with temperatures in some places reaching 40 degrees by May. June is monsoon month, starting with high humidity and short electrical storms. These storms morph into intense daily rains with short breaks where the sun breaks through and steams the wet conditions into something akin to a turkish bath.

For safaris, the hot season offer the best wildlife viewing as water is scarce and animals congregate around water holes as vegetation dies down. The later in the hot season you can go, the better for wildlife spotting, but this needs to be balanced with the growing heat through the season.

A couple of other things to bear in mind when considering when to go on safari in India are holidays and festivals. Christmas and New Year are extremely busy times for tourism in India, with full national parks and hotels requiring reservations well in advance. And while festivals happen all the time across India, there are some – Diwali and Holi in particular – that can make for travel chaos nationwide, so do your research on which festivals are happening when and where , and plan ahead accordingly.

Safari Lodges in India

In many parts of the country India is heavily focused on tourists – both internal and inbound. Towns and villages around popular national parks tend to have the full host of safari accommodation – from$5 rooms to ulta-chic safari lodges that (occasionally) replicate the real thing in Africa. Most lodges have good restaurants on the premises, though you’ll only find decent standard western food at high-end accommodation, and even then it’s pot luck.

India Safari Tours

India caters to just about every type of tourist imaginable, and there’s a huge selection of safari tour companies that can arrange safaris locally, regionally, nationwide or even internationally (primarily into Nepal). It’s well worth shopping around and doing thorough research before committing to a particular safari tour company in India, as the quality of service varies dramatically. As a general rule you get what you pay for, and most prices can be bartered down at least 20%. Have a read of our  reviews of safari tour companies in India .

Why India Should Be Your Next Safari Destination

The world’s second most populous country is a wildlife wonderland, home to some of the most endangered animals on the planet.

indila safari

Two hours into the first safari of my life, the hazy light of a fading Indian sun punctuates the inconvenient reality that time is not on our side. Bouncing along one dusty jungle road after the next, so far, we've come up empty in our search for Ranthambore National Park's iconic inhabitant: the elusive Bengal tiger, one of the rarest, most visually stunning animals to walk the earth. While I trust the Hindu gods of fate for an auspicious karmic conclusion — whomever they may be — the success of our evening game drive, and my knack for good luck, hangs in the balance of a 30-minute window. That's when the driver of our 4x4 Jeep kills the engine in the heart of the dense wilderness.

"We are just listening," my guide, Batti, says from the front seat. "No walkie talkies, but we do have monkeys."

Wrapped in a monastic silence, we wait and hope for the jungle to tip us off with the alarm call of a prey animal. At this point, anything will do. In the backseat, Sachin, the in-house naturalist from The Oberoi Vanyavilas Wildlife Resort , a five-star eco-camp on the fringe of the park in central India, studies the jungle floor for fresh tracks left behind by the colossal feline. This land, laden with temples and lakes and towering banyans, once served as the royal hunting ground for Jaipur's maharajas. Today, Ranthambore is a protected area and tiger reserve, home to an estimated 70 tigers in an area a hair smaller than Rhode Island. It teems with leopards, monkeys, wild boars, sloth bears, crocodiles, and a plethora of birds.

Honk! Somewhere in the bush, a distant peacock alerts the animal kingdom of an apex predator on the prowl. Honk! Two samba deer, a tiger's favorite meal, dart out of the thick canopy for safer ground. Honk! Hastily, our driver turns the ignition and beelines it around the corner towards the disturbance. Suddenly, a swarm of 10 safari vehicles envelope the scene, none of which we've seen in the park today. Word has it two tiger cubs were spotted in the vicinity before vanishing into the brush like phantom cats. Now, amidst a sea of camouflaged tourists and telephoto lenses, again, we wait.

Fifteen on-the-edge-of-your-seat minutes later, the magic happens and the cubs, Riddhi and Siddhi, emerge a football field's length away. At nine months old, they're much bigger than my mind imagined the cubs to be. Slowly, they traipse towards us — even stopping to pounce and play as if they're household kittens — before settling in about half the distance home plate is to first base. Yes, that close.

At one point, Siddhi stops entirely to gaze at her audience, stamping a transcendent imprint on my memory all while sending chills down my spine. "It gives the feel of the 'Jungle Book,'" Sachin says. It does — in fact, the jungles of India were the muse for Rudyard Kipling's famous 19th-century tome.

Unlike an African safari, though, where travelers are typically dropped straight into a private reserve, an Indian safari doesn't skip the sights and sounds and smells that make India, India. Children playing cricket in dirt fields. Honking tuk-tuks and morning prayers aired over loudspeakers. The aromas of cardamom and incense and marigolds at the local market. Here, wildlife rubs shoulders with the country's 1.3 billion-plus population, letting safari goers sample everyday life by traveling through the heartbeat of the subcontinent.

With 106 national parks and more than 500 designated wildlife sanctuaries, outfitters are aplenty, and travelers need one. For my safari, I traveled with Greaves Tours , a Travel + Leisure A-list operator providing door-to-door luxury service, from meals to transportation to booking park permits. "India is a complex land, and many of the parks require travel by road," says Shahrookh Cambata, CEO of Greaves Travel LLC . "Wildlife parks must be booked in advance and it is essential you work with a reputable company that focuses on drivers who can navigate you safely."

India even has its own "big five": the Bengal tiger, Indian elephant, one-horned rhinoceros, Asiatic lion, and Asiatic leopard. "India is the only country in the world where you can see tigers, lions, and leopards," says Cambata. It's also home to "some of the best hotels in the world, adding a unique feel to the experience," he adds.

Wild, Wild East

Dreaming of a safari? These can't-miss Indian destinations showcase a swath of unique wildlife.

Jhalana Leopard Reserve

Less than four miles from Jaipur International Airport, more than 30 leopards roam this 13-square-mile forest on the edge of Rajasthan's biggest city. With no competition for food, sightings of Jaipur's famous residents are frequent, with plenty of deer and boar and blue bulls to be eaten. We spot two leopards in the babool- and acacia-lined backwoods, watching a cub hunt and fail to capture a peacock, and an adult leopard dining on a mongoose. For bonus wildlife kicks, glamp with rescued elephants and camels at Dera Amer ( from $399) , a luxe conservation camp on the outskirts of Jaipur in the foothills of the Aravalli range.

Sasan Gir National Park

The only lions in the world outside of Africa, the Asiatic lion, live on Western India's Gujarat Peninsula near the Arabian Sea coast. Numbers have steadily increased since being on the brink of extinction at the turn of the century, with more than 600 of these majestic cats inhabiting the rugged hills and open savannas that lie across the Bay of Cambay from Mumbai. Due to its location, Sasan Gir is a less-visited park; to glimpse at the king of the jungle, visit between December and April for optimal viewing.

Corbett Tiger Reserve

Come for the tigers, stay for the wild elephants. India's oldest national park (founded in 1936) sits 200 miles north of New Delhi in the state of Uttarakhand. Often considered the country's best wildlife experience for being the first park to protect Bengal tigers, this idyllic Shangri-la in the Himalayan foothills is also home to hundreds of Indian elephants that can be seen combing its vast grasslands and crossing the Ramganga River.

Kaziranga National Park

In the far reaches of eastern India, four major rivers run through this undisturbed marshland deemed one of the finest wildlife refuges in the world. Wedged between Bhutan and Bangladesh in the state of Assam, Kaziranga is celebrated by UNESCO for its achievements in conservation — primarily for saving the one-horned rhinoceros, where two-thirds of the world's population lives (an estimated 2,500 rhinos inhabit the park). With an abundance of water, travelers can birdwatch too (think: grey-headed fish eagles) and if luck falls your way, spot the highly endangered Ganges river dolphin.

Family-owned operator Greaves Tours sets the standard for first-class service, offering tailor-made safaris throughout the Indian subcontinent. Their 15-night "Jungle Journey" itinerary goes through Ranthambore National Park, Pench National Park, and others, beginning in Delhi and ending in Mumbai.

andBeyond safaris 11-day tour of India includes both culture and wildlife with stops at the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort to go along with visits to Kanha National Park and Bandhavgarh National Park, two of India's best safari experiences.

  • With its large size and uncertain roads, internal flights are a good way to get around. As such there’s a very competitive domestic airline industry although the local airports have not necessarily kept up with the increase in air traffic so check-in and security queues can be very long.
  • Most nationalities require a visa to enter India. An e-Tourist Visa can be obtained online here >> .
  • An e-Visa should be applied for at least four days in advance of travel and allows a stay of up to 60 days.
  • The e-Visa application process is detailed so allow at least an hour per visa for the process. You need to upload a photo of yourself and a scan of the first two pages of your passport. Make sure you note the visa application number as it will be required if you need to return to the visa application process.
  • NB An Indian visa is valid from the day it is issued , not the date of entry.

India: Luxury & Private Safaris

How does one describe a country that stretches from the 28,000-foot high snow-capped Himalayan Mountains in the north that shelter the elusive snow leopard, to the sun-kissed beaches and swaying palm trees on the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal in the south? On the edge of the great desert of Rajasthan, one finds the magical cities of Jaipur , Jodhpur , Udaipur and Agra , renowned for the incredible palaces of their Maharajas and for magnificent forts and temples such as the Amber Fort. And of course, the Taj Mahal . Taking in the delicate details and perfect symmetry of this masterpiece of Muslim art at dawn is incredibly moving.

On the banks of the sacred Ganges, the city of Varanasi quite simply defies description—the epicenter of spirituality where death, rebirth, belief, and mundane life all meet. Jungles teeming with exotic birds, tigers, elephants, and even rhino, are bordered by sleepy villages where little has changed in the past 100 years. This is the land of Bollywood, where people really do bust out in song and dance. It is a highly spiritual country, home to Sikhs, Jains, Jews, Christians, Muslims, and Buddhists. You will find stunning natural beauty, peaceful villages, bustling cities, magnificent temples, and extraordinary birds, and wildlife. To experience India is to be deeply touched in one’s innermost being.

India, incredible India, a land of contrasts. Exquisite beauty, fabulous wealth, grinding poverty, pomp and ceremony, magnificent palaces, colorful saris, dusty landscapes, charm, politesse, patience, and acceptance are all juxtaposed at any one moment. Add a heady mix of incense, spice, flowers, chants, sitars, drums, and car horns. Not insistent, not saying “get out of my way” but rather, “toot toot, I’m behind you, passing on left.

Is India the Right Destination for You?

  • Travelers who love to immerse themselves in other cultures will be incredibly stimulated in India. At some point your eyes will burn from the intensity of chili in the air, your ears will be filled with the music and the constant hooting of horns, and your brain will reel trying to establish order within the chaos. Most people speak English and love to engage with visitors. You will be welcomed in temples and mosques, homes and shops. India is paradise for the curious.
  • India truly has some of the most original and beautiful hotels in the world where you will be lavished with attention and care and surrounded by exquisite beauty. If you’ve ever dreamed of staying in a palace, you will be delighted at every turn.
  • Foodies will relish the opportunity to sample a plethora of flavors, where specialty dishes vary by region and fusion is king.
  • Wildlife enthusiasts will be enticed by the country’s 47 tiger reserves, brimming with knowledgeable and dedicated guides and wardens.

When to Visit India?

For most of India, the best time is from October thru May, with the ideal time for wildlife viewing being February and March. India has an extraordinary variety of climatic regions, ranging from tropical in the south to temperate and alpine in the Himalayan north. In December and January, temperatures average around 50–59°F in the area around New Delhi. Temperatures rise as one proceeds towards the equator, peaking around 68–77°F in mainland India’s southeast. December and January can have freezing temperatures at night in Rajasthan and at the higher elevations in the north, though most of the northern states experience cool and dry winters as they are sheltered by the Himalayas.

How Much Should I Budget for a Trip to India?

What does a trip to india cost.

The cost of a trip to India will vary widely based on the type of accommodation you select. If you are exclusively visiting cities, there are many economical Western hotels offering a good clean bed at the end of a day’s exploring. For those looking to revel in the opulence of the Maharajas, India boasts numerous palaces that have been converted into hotels. To take advantage of the fabulous hotels and camps that we consider part of the experience, you should plan on $5000 to $10,000 per person for two weeks.

Our Favorite Areas in India

  • Though the Golden Triangle is considered a must-see, we much prefer the quieter life of southern India or the far north. Floating on your private boat among the rice fields in the backwater of Kerala , home of Ayurveda, is our idea of heaven.
  • Gujarat is noted for its amazing crafts and delightful villages as is the northern state of Punjab, home to the Sikh Golden Temple at Amritsar.
  • Being safari aficionados, pride of place has to go to the game parks , of which there are many. The experience is not as wild as parks in East Africa or Botswana, but the scenery is outstanding, the wildlife plentiful, and the camps we recommend are true “wow” experiences.  Seeing a tiger is heart-stopping.
  • For those who revel in intense sensation and challenge, Varanasi should not be missed.

What Else Should I Know Before Planning a Trip to India?

Many people dislike India for all the reasons that others love it.  For some, the dirt, the traffic, and the immersion in such a different culture is just not their idea of vacation. And if you don’t like spicy food, you will be hungry.

The Lowdown on Safari

Tigers are eponymous with a safari experience in India and while their numbers are strong, they are elusive. Unlike safari in Africa, permits by zone are assigned based on availability when you confirm your trip. Early bookings have their choice of zones, often claiming ones with the highest tiger densities well in advance. Last minute trips aren’t at a loss though on the Tatkal system, which allocates permits for every zone on the day of the drive. Though you aren’t guaranteed a permit, we’ve yet to have a client not receive one. Full day permits allow you extended hours beyond the morning and afternoon drives and let you cross into any zone.

Another key difference from safari in Africa is the crowds you’ll encounter. At the park gates you’ll find a lineup of jeeps ready to channel their inner F1 driver as soon as the clock strikes. It’s a madhouse, but isn’t that also the fun of India? The vehicles shortly disperse among their assigned zones and quiet quickly settles.

Ways to Experience India

You can walk beside elephants; ride a camel into the desert; and take a train bearing names such as Royal Rajasthan, Palace on Wheels, or the opulent Maharaja’s Express. The palm tree-lined back waters of Kerala are best experienced on an overnight journey on a picturesque private boat. Walk through colorful bazaars, busy cities, and small villages. Wherever you go, you will be well received.  In the game parks ( Kanha, Pench, and Bandavgarh are our favorites) you will be in open sided 4X4 vehicles, very similar to those in Africa.

Secrets and Tips from our Experts

  • To get the most out of your time in India, use the services of one of our private guides. You’ll find yourself on many long drives and having a charismatic companion will greatly enhance the journey.
  • Train rides are interesting and can often be faster than driving.
  • End your journey with a boat ride on the backwaters of Kerala.
  • Do a ‘full day’ safari in Central India’s parks for a taste of the wild and visit with Bengal tigers portrayed in Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book .

5 things to know before going on safari in India in 2024

Forget Africa, India is now one of the most popular places to go on safari. You can see tigers, rhinos, lions and many more rare animals on an Indian safari.

A safari vacation is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, something unlike any other vacation but one which requires a lot of research and planning in order to make it a complete success.

Whether you’re thinking of adding a safari onto your sightseeing in India or planning your entire Indian trip around the safari, this article has the tips that will help you prepare for and plan an unforgettable jungle jaunt in the wilds of India .

Travel tips for Indian safaris

1. book everything well in advance.

A majority of the national parks in India regulate the entry of visitors and vehicles to cause minimum disturbance to wildlife. As such, only a limited number of vehicles are allowed per day and rooms in lodges are also few. Booking everything in advance is therefore of paramount importance.

2. Make time for more than one safari during your stay

To increase the chances of wildlife sightings, it is prudent to go on as many safaris in a day for the maximum time that the park permits. Wildlife spotting is never guaranteed as most animals tend to be shy and elusive, hence the more time you spend in the jungle, the better the viewing experience will be.

3. Choose your safari destination carefully

It is essential to choose a safari destination that meets your requirements. While certain parks are great just for birding, others excel in harbouring unique animal species such as the rhinoceros, Asiatic lion, or the Royal Bengal Tiger .

4. Travel during the right season

National Parks in India usually open in October after the rainy season and close in June before the advent of the monsoon. While all the opening months are good for animal sightings, the big cats can be seen more often in the drier months of April to June as they congregate on the limited sources of water left in the park and thus making viewing easier..

5. Wear the correct clothing

Packing the right clothes, and keeping the weather and the game drives in mind is essential to make your safari holiday a grand success. Certain items like hats, jackets, binoculars and a bandana for dust protection, must be carried at all times. Utmost care must be taken that your outer clothing is in neutral colors, so as to blend with the jungle like beige, brown or green.

What to pack for a safari in India

  • Sturdy shoes
  • Full-sleeved shirt
  • A water bottle you can fill on the go in order to minimise the impact of plastic in the wild and improve the environment
  • A journal to document your experience
  • If you are a photo buff, a camera with spare batteries and a memory card

Tips for going on safari in India with kids

When planning a child-first safari, few things need to be kept in mind so as to make the experience a whole lot easier.

Limit the number of destinations in one trip and ask your lodge manager in advance about any kid-friendly activities.

Carry all the protection gear and relative medicines, but most importantly, stoke their imagination by asking them what they saw and make a sketch to make the experience more rewarding for them.

How to budget for an Indian safari

A major part of your safari experience will include stay, park fees, transfers, meals and game drives. These expenses are usually included in your safari package and are payable in your local currency to your agent back home.

That said, you will still need a sizable sum for items of personal nature, tipping, shopping, purchasing snacks from the local shops etc. You can use your debit card to withdraw cash from ATMs in India if you are from a European destination.

Best ways to pay for your Indian Safari

Some merchants in the country also accept American Express and Discover credit cards, but it is best to ask your safari tour operator about this before leaving your home country. As a thumb rule, allow £10 per person per day for drinks and purchasing souvenirs and craft items.

Most major brands of traveler cheques are accepted throughout India, mainly from Thomas Cook or Amex. Charges for encashing traveler cheques may vary from bank to bank and place to place. You must present your passport whenever you change currency or traveler cheques.

In case your hotel payments are not covered in the package, all foreign nationals must pay their hotel bills in the currency of their country either by cash, traveler cheques or credit card. You can pay in Indian rupees also if you have proof of changing money.

International Money Transfer:

PayPal: Best for peer-to-peer transfers and sending large amounts

Charges: 99 cents minimum and $4.99 max.

Limit: No limit for verified accounts

PayPal beats its competitors simply with the choice of payment methods and accessibility. Funds can be received instantly into the recipient’s PayPal account and transferred into a bank account the next day.

Zalle: Best for bank transfer

Charges: $0 for sending or receiving money

(Check with your bank if they levy any additional charge to use this service)

If you don’t want to send money through an app like PayPal, but still want access to fast, zero fee bank transfers you can pay directly by using an app like Zelle, even if your bank account is not a partner with Zelle.

Recipient’s enrolled with Zelle will get the funds in a matter of minutes, but the transaction limit is decided by the credit union or the member’s bankThose who have not partnered with Zelle can only send $500 per week.

Wise: Low fees

Charges: Fx markups between 0-1%

Wise , formerlyTransferWise, offers low-fee and fast money transfers, depending on the currency in question. Wise currently offers a real exchange rate but charges a fee of $99, which will know your safari operator and you get the best deal by far.

Bank transfers:

Since you need to pay way ahead of time to book a safari, your agent in India will quote you in INR and ask you to remit by bank transfer. Using this mode will however cost you substantially more than it should.

Banks charge a fee for executing a transfer through the SWIFT network. Secondly, if your bank and the Indian Bank don’t have a relationship, you pay a further fee of $100+ Lastly you pay the Fx conversion fee which allows them to charge an extra 3% to 4% per transaction.

Tigers, Ranthambhore National Park

India’s wildlife: our safari guide to the central parks

  • Ranthambhore National Park

By India specialist Sophie

Hundreds of national parks and sanctuaries are scattered across India, many with the raison d'être to protect the country’s most remarkable beast: the Bengal tiger. India’s national animal is the star, but the wildlife opportunities in Indian national parks are many layered. Sloth bears and leopards lurk in the shadows while herds of deer and elephant roam freely. The air flutters with electric-blue butterflies and brightly feathered birds.

It can be hard to decide which area to focus on but, for me, the parks of central India offer particularly biodiverse landscapes, as well as the most successful tiger safaris.

India’s central parks

Leopard, Satpura National Park

The network of national parks spread across India’s three central states, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh, are well set up for wildlife spotting. The lodges and hotels have honed their skills, employing enthusiastic staff and knowledgeable naturalists.

For the best experience, I suggest dedicating your time to just a couple of the parks — otherwise you can bet a tiger is sighted the day you’re driving in-between two of them. I’ve chosen the four parks that have impressed the most, each offering its own distinct wildlife experience, to choose from.

Safaris in Kanha National Park

Tigers, Kanha National Park

Visit Kanha in February or March and you’ll find the plains ablaze with shocks of red flowers. The flame of the forest, a type of deciduous butea tree, is in full bloom. Outside this period, the landscape of yellow-green meadows and lakes with petrified trees jutting up from them still holds its interest.

Kanha is well-known for its flourishing tiger population and, while not guaranteed, you stand a good chance of sightings. On one afternoon jeep safari, we’d almost given up hope of spotting one. Suddenly, an awful smell hit us and a tiger emerged from the undergrowth dragging a huge wild boar carcass. I hadn’t appreciated how large tigers were until I’d seen one pulling a 90 kg (14 stone) boar with ease.

Aside from tigers, large numbers of deer and blue bulls graze the meadows, and Indian marsh crocodiles lurk near the lakes. You might also spot Indian jackals in small packs and, if you’re very lucky, a leopard.

All safaris in Kanha are by jeep, but many lodges offer walks through the park’s buffer zone that concentrate on birdlife and flora. Lodges also supply bicycles for you to visit some of the local traditional villages populated by the forest-dwelling Gond and Baiga tribes.

How to get to Kanha

The park is best reached by a domestic flight from Delhi to Jabalpur, the closest airport city. From Jabalpur, it’s a three-hour drive to the park.

Where to stay in Kanha

Shergarh, Kanha National Park

There are plenty of places to stay around Kanha but, for me, the six canvas tents at Shergarh are hard to beat. Run by a local naturalist and his English wife, the camp is set in a forested area overlooking a freshwater lake. Guests eat together in the main house, and the menu of home-cooked dishes often has an Anglo-Indian twist.

The camp’s naturalists are on hand to take you on walks into the surrounding deciduous forest, along trails well-worn by local villagers. On foot, my naturalist, Rajan, could point out details we’d missed by jeep, including some fresh leopard scat and claw marks in the dust. Turquoise mormon and blue oakleaf butterflies danced around us as we walked, one briefly landing on my shoulder.

Satpura National Park

Sambar deer, Satpura National Park

There’s less focus on tigers at Satpura , although they do live in the vicinity. Sloth bears and leopards take the stage instead, as well as packs of wild dog, the bison-like Indian gaur and sambar deer.

Walking deep into the forest with my naturalist, I could appreciate the smaller animals, including Malabar giant squirrels and clouds of endemic butterflies.

The Denwa River and its tributaries run through Satpura’s gorges and ravines, enabling you to explore by canoe as well as jeep. It’s also the only national park where you can walk on foot inside its boundaries.

I rose early one morning for a canoe safari. The only boat on the river, our canoe’s quiet motion did nothing to interrupt the still of the morning. We pulled onto a riverbank for breakfast as the sun began to rise. As we sat, a family of more than 20 wild boars swam across the river, completely oblivious to our presence. The group swam in a diamond shape, the babies in the middle to protect them from gharials.

The birdwatching at Satpura is among the best I’ve experienced in India, as the waterholes, rivers and lakes provide a variety of environments for endemic and migratory birds. As well as a small colony of the rare Indian skimmer, more than ten types of eagles live here.

How to get to Satpura

Satpura connects well with Kanha , and visiting both parks gives you a good chance of seeing a mix of wildlife. From Kanha, you take a two-hour train journey to Satpura, passing through the Madhya Pradesh countryside.

Where to stay in Satpura

Cottage, Reni Pani

While Reni Pani isn’t in the national park proper, its secluded location surrounded by the thick forest has a middle-of-the-jungle feel. Each of the 12 cottages has a veranda where you can sit and listen for wildlife.

The lights go out around the lodge at evening time so as to not disrupt the wildlife (sloth bears have been sighted in the grounds), which means on a clear night you can see the smallest of stars. Dinner is served under the boughs of a fig tree before guests gather for a nightcap around the bonfire.

Pench National Park

Gaur, Pench National Park

Sat between Kanha and Satpura, Pench is a good addition for a safari if you have the time. It’s a well-populated tiger park, although its huge size and dense forest can make the animals tricky to spot. Fewer visitors lend the park a particularly tranquil feel.

A healthy colony of wild dogs and large herds of gaur roam here, and the teak forests hide the rare flying squirrel. With extreme luck or patience you might see a civet, jungle cat or porcupine.

Due to the small visitor numbers, Pench is a park where you can take a jeep safari to a quiet corner and wait to see what emerges from the jungle. As I watched, a blue-black Asian forest scorpion scuttled across the ground and proceeded to attack the wheel of the jeep with vigor.

Where to stay in Pench

Jamtara Wilderness Camp

Visiting Pench gives you the opportunity to stay at Jamtara Wilderness Camp, ten luxurious safari tents set in an arjuna tree forest.

You can spend a night of your stay sleeping under the stars on a local farmer’s machaan, a stilted platform positioned above a paddy field (traditionally used to guard crops from elephants). A guard is nearby if you need assistance.

A private entrance into the park is only a five-minute drive away, giving you more time in bed than the other camps allow. After a day’s safari, guests congregate under the trailing arms of a banyan tree for drinks around a fire pit.

Tadoba National Park

Sloth bear, Tadoba National Park

It may be one of India’s oldest national parks, but Tadoba has remained off most itineraries — the limited number of places to stay keeps visitor numbers low. The park boasts the highest density of tigers in India, although the dense forest setting means sightings aren’t guaranteed.

In the hotter months, from March to May, the vegetation dies back and the smaller pockets of water dry out, bringing the tigers to the larger waterholes. Sightings are frequent, and I saw a leopard skulking across to the waterside to drink, as well as a pair of civets.

All safaris in the park are conducted by jeep, accompanied by a trained naturalist. When I visited in October, the forest was lush with post-monsoon growth. As the tigers were particularly difficult to spot, my naturalist used track marks and jungle noises to predict where a tiger might emerge, leading us to the spot where a female emerged from the undergrowth into the sunlight.

I’ve long been fascinated with sloth bears. Rudyard Kipling celebrated the species through his character Baloo in The Jungle Book, and modern adaptations of the story have helped conservation efforts to protect the bear, which is native to India’s central parks.

On one afternoon safari in Tadoba, as the light dimmed, we happened upon a pair of sloth bears sloping across the path in front of us, with their distinctive shaggy fur and loping gait. The driver slowed and we trailed them — the pair remained completely unfazed by our presence — until dark.

As you track the larger animals, you’re likely to encounter a variety of birdlife as well as gaurs, langurs, four-horned antelopes (chausinghas in Hindi) and mugger crocodiles. I also spotted a wolf spider the size of my hand.

How to get to Tadoba

Tadoba is a domestic flight from Nagpur, which connects with Delhi and Mumbai , then a three-hour drive. You can combine a safari in Tadoba with Pench National Park (a five- to six-hour drive), carrying onto Satpura or Kanha from there.

Where to stay in Tadoba

Family-run Svasara Jungle Lodge has 12 well-kept cottages in a relaxed environment and the appeal of a swimming pool for the hotter months.

Audley and TOFT

Audley is a member of Travel Operators for Tigers (TOFT), which together with Global Tiger Patrol supports a sustainable approach to tourism in the Indian Subcontinent’s wildlife reserves.

Key to TOFT’s work is showing the local community that tigers are more valuable alive than dead. A current focus involves encouraging local people to become watchmen or guides so they can make a living while protecting the tiger population.

We make a donation for everyone who travels with us to one of India's national parks where tigers are present.

TOFT also visits a number of lodges in India, helping to promote sustainable practices. All the properties we work with have an eco-rating (known as a pug mark), which you can see on TOFT’s website. You can also download one of TOFT’s Good Wildlife Travel Guides to take with you.

Best time to spot wildlife in India

In February and March, the temperatures average a comfortable 27°C (80°F), rain is rare and the foliage starts to thin out, making wildlife easier to spot. If you can handle warmer temperatures, in April and May the water sources dry out, drawing animals from the jungle to larger lakes, which can lead to some very successful sightings.

The parks close to visitors roughly from June to mid-October, when the monsoon rains fall. India then descends into wintertime. December and January are the coldest months, and I suggest packing thermals, hats and gloves if you visit during this time. Due to the cold weather, mammal sightings are rare but the great migration of sub-Himalayan birds brings eagles, herons and storks down to the plains.

How to make the most of a wildlife trip to India

  • Safari permits go on sale well in advance, and there are more hotel rooms than permits for most parks: I advise planning your trip 9 to 12 months ahead.
  • Consider adding in some cultural exploration. If it’s your first time in India, the Taj Mahal is a simple addition before flying home from Delhi. If you’re a more seasoned visitor, you could fly home via Mumbai.
  • Regardless of when you visit, it can be surprisingly chilly on early morning game drives so I suggest taking a jacket or fleece. In dry weather it can also get very dusty, so a scarf can be helpful.
  • To reduce the impact on the environment, safaris are conducted in shared jeeps of usually no more than eight people (including the driver and naturalist), with space to stretch out and take photographs. Some parks occasionally offer private jeeps, but these are hard to guarantee.
  • The parks of central India never teem with international visitors, but the country has a budding wildlife culture and many Indians visit. During festival time, when many Indians take time off, the parks can get very busy.

The Top Ten Animals to see in India

As an alternative to traditional African safari destinations, India offers one of the best safari experiences with a plethora of wildlife some of which is unique to the country’s national parks and reserves.

#1: Bengal Tiger

Out of all the animals in India, the Bengal tiger is probably the most famous. They are the largest cat species in the world and the most numerous subspecies of tiger in the wild today. These big cats are capable of killing animals over twice their size and have powerful paws and jaws which helps them catch their prey.

Did you know : Every tiger in the world is unique; no two tigers have the same stripes just like a human fingerprint! Unlike other big cats, tigers love water so can often be found around waterholes and rivers. One of the best places to see tigers in the wild in India is Kanha National Park, a true wilderness with rolling grasslands and winding streams making it a picturesque location to enjoy tiger tracking.

When to go:  Travel between March–April for the best tiger sightings. This is the end of the dry season so tigers are easier to spot, but temperatures are high!

#2: Sloth Bear

Much smaller than Disney’s Jungle Book portrayed, sloth bears normally stand at around 5 – 6 foot in height. These fluffy, somewhat lanky bears are generally solitary animals residing in the forests of the Indian subcontinent.

Did you know: Sloth bears are nocturnal mainly foraging for termites and fruit at night. Sloth bears are considered vulnerable by the IUCN. Their numbers have decreased due habitat loss and human poaching thanks to their tameable nature. The best park in India to see sloth bears is Satpura National Park.

When to go:  The best time to see sloth bears in India is the tail end of the dry season, luckily the same time as tigers!

#3: One-Horned Rhino

Similar to their African counterparts, Indian rhinos have thick grey skin and a large stature, but notably this subspecies only has one horn rather than two.

Did you know: Rhinos horns are made of keratin, the same protein as human hair and nails. The habitat of Indian rhinoceroses is limited to one particular area of India: the Indo-Gangetic Plain so sightings are likely if you know where to go. Head to Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary for the best sightings; it is home to two thirds of the world’s population of one-horned rhinos. Although their conservation status is vulnerable, numbers have increased dramatically over the past 100 years, from just 12 individuals in Kaziranga in 1,908, to 1,855 today. This is a fantastic conservation success story!

When to go:  One-horned rhinos can be seen year-round in Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary keep your eyes peeled and camera at the ready!

#4: Asiatic Leopard

Asiatic leopards are very elusive, solitary creatures seen amongst rocky outcrops in India’s national parks. Leopards are stealthy hunters found mainly at dusk and dawn seeking out prey such as deer and fowl.

Did you know: Indian leopards have larger black rosettes than African leopards. Populations are relatively high in India with between 12,000 and 14,000 leopards thought to live in the wild. The best location for leopards in India is Jawai. In this area it is even thought that leopards are the sacred guardians of the local ancient temples!

When to go: October – March is the best time to visit Jawai to see Asiatic leopards.

Best Time to See Tigers in India

October to April is classed as the ‘ best time to visit ’ India, because the climate is cooler, so game drives and travelling will be far more comfortable, and this fits in well with the addition of tiger spotting. Throughout these months, viewing the tigers and the other wildlife in the national parks is fantastic, however, the scenery does change extremely quickly with the ever-increasing temperatures.

February , March , and April are probably the best times to see tigers in India due to the scenery and temperatures.

#5: snow leopards.

Snow leopards are one of the world’s most elusive big cats. They roam the rugged hills of Himalayas, remaining camouflage in the snow with their light grey/white pelt. With the help of expert guides you will follow tracks of the leopards’ prey as well as evidence from the snow leopards themselves to seek out these mysterious creatures.

Did you know: Snow leopards can jump as far as 15 metres and use their long tails for balance.

Snow leopards can be tracked in Hemis National Park, a high altitude reserve in the Ladakh region of India. Travel to Leh on our small group safari for the best chance of seeing snow leopards in the wild.

When to go: March-April is the best time to see snow leopards. This is when they come down from the high mountains in search of prey.

#6: Jackals

India jackals, found across a number of parks in India, have pelts that range from golden buff to black/brown depending on their habitat. They are also found on the outskirts of towns and villages where they scavenge for food.

Did you know: Solitary jackals have been known to form relationships with tigers, feeding on their kill remnants

The best parks to see jackals in India are Madhav National Park, Ranthambore National Park and Chilka Wildlife Sanctuary.

When to go: Ranthambore is open from October to June and jackals can be seen year round

What to expect from Wildlife in India

These elegant spotted deer are found throughout the Indian Subcontinent and it is a delight to see them graze and bound through the national parks of India. Their name is thought to derive from the same root as the cheetah, the Sanskrit citra meaning “bright” or “spotted”.

Did you know: The males’ antlers reach almost a metre in length!

Chital can be found roaming Kanha National Park so look out for them during your tiger tracking game drives.

When to go:  Chital can be seen year-round but, as they blend in to the grasslands, the end of the dry season is best for clear sightings (March-April).

There is a plethora of birdlife to be seen in India, one of our particular favourites are the Indian roller, stunning little birds that are part of the colourful roller family. Their brownish chests are accentuated with blue and purple-tipped wings that make them stand out against their habitats of forest and grasslands.

Did you know: Their name derives from the acrobatic movements they perform when flying. Ranthambore and Corbett National Parks are home to abundant bird species so should be on any twitcher’s bucket list when travelling to India. From water birds and woodpeckers to owls and birds of prey you will be astounded with the variety!

When to go:  Indian rollers are not migratory birds so can generally be seen year-round but so have some seasonal movements. Even if Indian rollers aren’t around, Ranthambore boasts over 580 species of bird so you won’t be disappointed whenever you travel!

#9: Elephants

Asian elephants are notably different in size to their African cousins, with a slighter build and smaller ears as well as more of an arch in their back. Elephants need to drink at least once a day, so waterholes are your best bet to locate elephants in India’s parks.

Did you know: Elephants can feed for up to 19 hours a dayArguably the best park in India to see elephants in the wild is Corbett National Park. This is India’s oldest national park with five zones.

When to go:  November to February is the best time to visit Corbett National Park.

#10: Asiatic Lions

Asiatic lions are smaller and shaggier than African lions, with a thicker somewhat lighter coat. They are much rarer than the African subspecies too with just over 500 remaining; Asiatic lions are therefore considered endangered.

Did you know: Populations of Asiatic lions are slowly rising which is great news! Sasan Gir National Park is the only place in the world that Asiatic lions can be found so seeing them is a real privilege.

When to go: March to May is the best time to spot Asiatic lions in Gir National Park. This time doesn’t coincide with other wildlife in the park but can be combined with tiger tracking in other parts of India.

Our family had a customized tour that included all three national parks for tiger safaris as well as the traditional golden triangle tour. We had 2 different drivers during the tour that picked us up at the airport or drove us to the next location. The drivers were always early, extremely friendly and helpful, and the cars were immaculate. We stayed at six different hotels that were picked out for us. They were all very nice and I would stay at them again. The guides at each location were very knowledgeable and friendly. The company itself stayed in contact with me throughout the trip to make sure I did not need anything. I would highly recommend this company. This tour was much more flexible and convenient than participating in a group tour where everyone has to keep up with a group pace.

Once at the hotel near Rathenbourne the trip was well planned and carried out. The young man who met us at the station, Arbaz, was courteous and on time. The hotel was lovely and the staff could not have been more helpful, even changing the menu for dinner to suit our western tastes. Arbaz was contactable throughout our stay and was always on time. He gave very good service and is a credit to the company. I would have liked a little more information about getting the train at Nizamuddin station, being prepared for such long trains would have been an advantage. Although there was a representative on the station platform he only made himself known to us once we had reached the carriage. On returning to Dehli Arbaz stayed with us on the platform until the train arrived. The other guide had a larger party and stayed with them. On reaching Dehli the taxi driver was waiting for us as arranged. Once in the taxi he was eager to show us the sights of Dehli and despite repeated requests to go to the hotel, he continued to ask about shopping/eating/which monuments we wanted to see and the journey from station to hotel took one hour and fifteen minutes and the traffic was clear. The hotel used for the end of the tour needs some consideration for the future. Although the room was lovely, even though it didn’t have a window, some of the staff were less than courteous. The breakfast offered was not suited to European guests added to which there was no coffee on offer. Most of the equipment was in need of a through clean.

What people love about Tiger Tours in India

We had a great time in India. The tour manager Mr. Amit was very responsive to all my questions and issues prior to the trip and was waiting for us to greet us at the first hotel. Our driver Mr. Vikram was great too. He was very professional and was always on time waiting for us each day. We absolutely loved our local guide in Jaipur. He was so professional, knowledgeable and quick that we felt we were very well taken care of. Now here’s the reason I can’t give 5 stars to this tour. It was the hotel in Jaipur and the local guide in Delhi. The hotel was not up to the standard of 3 stars at all. The bathroom was disgusting, moldy and gross. They called us around 10pm asking us to order room service both nights we stayed. It was the most horrible service that I have ever experienced at any hotels around the world. Now the local guide in Delhi, he made us decide to say goodbye after 3 hours. We never had a problem tipping people at all until the rickshaw ride (which was included in the tour). It was such a turn off moment for us when the guide asked us to tip them 200 for a 200 ride. He was also on the personal phone calls a lot, which made us feel that he really didn’t want to be there at all for us. We had to call it a day.
Pushpendre our guide was extremely helpful polite and informative He was keen to accommodate our needs and explain any issues we did not understand He was always pointing out things we may find interesting and to stop for photos We were very impressed by his driving skills Overall he enhanced our enjoyment of the trip Maureen and Alexandra

WILDLIFE SAFARI IN INDIA – A BEGINNER’S GUIDE

indila safari

Introduction

Hey nature lover! Dreaming of your first big cat sighting? Looking for a weekend getaway from the hustle bustle of city life? Is a wildlife safari just the thing on your mind? We figured you may have some questions and we are here to help you ease your way to the forests. So, let’s go!

Wildlife safaris in India have become one of the most thrilling vacation activities or popular weekend escapades in recent times. The growing number of majestic big cats, thus greater sighting opportunities, the meticulously planned itineraries and the well managed resorts and lodges promise a memorable trip of peaceful rejuvenation.

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about wildlife safaris in India and their answers in nutshells.

1. ARE WILDLIFE SAFARIS IN INDIA SAFE?

With more and more trained naturalists and stricter rules and regulations, a wildlife safari in India is not only an enjoyable activity, but is safer than ever before. Follow the instructions of your naturalist / guide / tour operator and you will be fine!

2. BEST NATIONAL PARKS IN INDIA?

This answer is totally subjective and it is hard to pick one over the other. Despite it, if we had to pick our favourites, we’d pick Kabini in South India, Kanha in Central India and Jim Corbett in North India. If you are planning a wildlife trip and are conflicted about which park to visit, please feel free to  contact us  and we will happily assist you.

3. BEST TIME TO GO ON A WILDLIFE SAFARI IN INDIA?

Wildlife safaris in India occur year round, although the main season is between October and June in most national parks and tiger reserves. The core zones remain closed during the monsoon months i.e. July to September, while the buffer zones remain open to tourists.

Broadly speaking, the best time to go on a wildlife safari is between October and April. Our suggestion is to plan your wildlife safari depending on the purpose of your travel and the species you hope to see.

If you love tigers, March to May would be the best time to spot them. If you love migratory birds, November to January would be ideal. As a photographer, you may enjoy visiting the jungles in October and November, right after the monsoons when everything is lush and fresh.

Follow us on  social media  to know more about animal behaviour, sightings, and wildlife photography.

4. TIMINGS OF A WILDLIFE SAFARI IN INDIA?

Most national parks in India offer 2 wildlife safaris in the day. The morning safari is usually between 5-11 A.M. (depending on the national park and the time of year you travel). The afternoon safari is between 2-7 P.M.

The better-known national parks such as Ranthambore, Bandhavgarh and Kanha offer full day safaris which operate from 6 A.M. and 6 P.M. Additionally, some of these parks and others also offer night safaris.

5. HOW TO BOOK A WILDLIFE SAFARI IN INDIA?

There are two ways to book wildlife safaris in India. Usually, most resorts and tour operators offer packages which include stay, food and safaris. So, all you need to do is to give them your travel dates and they will book the safaris as per your schedule.

The second option is to book the safari online yourself. For example, if you want to book a safari in Tadoba, you can click on  this link  that will take you to their website. Likewise, each forest has its own website.

Lastly, you can hop onto a pre-planned meticulously designed itinerary that suits your needs. You can check out some of our upcoming tours  here .

6. HOW MANY WILDLIFE SAFARIS ARE NEEDED TO SPOT A TIGER?

Legend says, in the jungle you might not see a tiger, but the tiger is always watching you. But, there is never a guarantee of a tiger sighting and the element of luck is always involved. However, the growing tiger numbers have made sightings more frequent. We would suggest a minimum of 4 safaris to boost your chances of a tiger sighting.

Some people get multiple tiger sightings worth a lifetime on their very first safari, while it takes others ages to spot their first tiger. It took ace wildlife photographer  Sudhir Shivaram  10 years to get his first tryst with a tiger in the wild! Test your luck!

7. WHAT ANIMALS CAN I EXPECT TO SPOT ON A WILDLIFE SAFARI IN INDIA?

Usually, the charismatic tigers and elusive leopards are on top of most people’s lists and any sighting should be considered extremely lucky and precious. Moreover, depending on the forest you visit, you can spot elephants, rhinoceros, sloth bears, wild dogs, jackals, wolves, civets, otters among other usual suspects like the spotted deer, sambar deer, nilgai, wild boars and langurs.

Hanuman Langur aka Gray Langur

Some birds that you would most often also encounter are rufous treepies, jungle fowls, jungle babblers, bee-eaters, Indian rollers, woodpeckers, peafowls and kingfishers among several others. You can also bump into some raptors such as the crested serpent eagle, changeable hawk eagle, white-rumped vulture, oriental honey buzzard, mottled-wood owl, spotted owlet and many more.

8. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CORE ZONE AND BUFFER ZONE?

Tourists are allowed to explore about 10-20% of a national park. Most forests divide the tourism zones into core zones and buffer zones. While core zones are forested areas where wildlife and natural resources are strongly protected by the forest department and no human activity is permitted, buffer zones are areas adjoining or surrounding the core area, where wildlife and nature is conserved, but coexists with small human hamlets with limited activity.

9. WHAT CLOTHES SHOULD I WEAR WHILE ON A WILDLIFE SAFARI IN INDIA?

You can pick your clothes according to the season in which you visit the jungles. We recommend something that covers your legs to avoid insect bites. Avoid fluorescent clothes and try to blend in with the forest scenery.

In the summer months, you can wear anything you are comfortable in to battle the scorching heat. If you are allergic to dust, do not forget to cover your nose! It can get chilly during winter, especially before sunrise and after sunset so ensure you carry enough warm clothes and something to cover your ears. The rest is really your choice.

10. WHAT CAMERA EQUIPMENT SHOULD I CARRY?

Broadly speaking, an entry level DSLR camera body with a telephoto zoom lens of at least 200 mm should suffice for large mammals as you can sometimes spot them just 15 metres away! If you are interested in bird photography, a greater zoom length (400 mm and above) is necessary. Depending on your budget and the animal you wish to photograph, we leave the choice up to you!

However, if you need more help, read our blogs on our top recommendations of camera lenses for a wildlife safari. Tip – Do carry an extra battery and SD card. Also, a cleaning kit to wipe the dust off your lens and camera body is extremely important!

Here are a few last-minute tips! Do not forget to carry a first aid kit in case of any emergencies. Stay as alert and calm as possible during the safari and keep your phones on airplane mode. Also, please do not litter and do not feed the animals. Have a great time!

We hope this blog helped answer your questions and you are psyched about your upcoming wildlife safari! We would love to be the ones to show you your first or next tiger!

Best 7 National Parks for Tiger Safaris in India (Tips & Location Map)

India is the best place to see wild tigers. It enjoys 70% of the world's tiger population and has over 50 tiger reserves.

If you are a wildlife and nature lover, don't miss a wildlife safari tour in one of India's national parks.

The majestic Bengal tigers are the main stars — one of the top-draw animals for safari-goers, but you will also enjoy an array of other wild animals and the grasslands.

Jeep safaris, the most popular way to see the Bengal tigers in their natural habitat, are available in almost all of the national parks across India.

Read on for more information about tiger safaris in India covering the best national parks, best times, and other tips.

  • Best 7 National Parks for Tiger Safaris

How to Choose a Tiger Safari

A sample india itinerary with a tiger safari, the best time for a tiger safari in india, 1. ranthambore national park — most popular.

Ranthambore National Park is one of the biggest and best national parks for spotting wild tigers and other animals, such as jungle cats and Indian foxes.

It is close to Agra and Jaipur. The convenient location makes it easy to include in a classic golden triangle trip (of Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur).

Moreover, Ranthambore National Park features sparse forest cover and open grassy meadows. A wider and unobstructed view increases the chance of seeing a tiger .

  • How to get there: about 170 km from Jaipur (3½ hours' driving)
  • Location: Rajasthan (a state in northwest India)

2. Kanha National Park — Most Wildlife

Kanha National Park is considered the largest national park in Madhya Pradesh (central India).

if you are interested in seeing more varied wildlife and a scenic jungle landscape, Kanha National Park is a good choice.

The dense forest, which provides good shelter for its tigers, may lead to less chance to spot a tiger.

  • How to get there: 2 hours' flying form Delhi to Swami Vivekananda International Airport and 4½–5 hours' driving from the airport
  • Location: Madhya Pradesh (a state in central India)

3. Bandhavgarh National Park — Highest Density of Tigers

Bandhavgarh National Park is another popular national park for tiger safaris in Madhya Pradesh.

Bandhavgarh National Park offers the best chance of seeing tigers  as it has a higher density of tigers. So, it is also a good choice if you are aiming at spotting tigers (and quickly). It is more remotely located than Ranthambhore and Kandha.

Besides Bengal tigers, it boasts a tremendous amount of species like the Indian guar, the world's largest bovine. You can also enjoy a guided walking safari to explore nature (not the tigers!) from up close.

  • How to get there: 1½ hours' flying from Delhi to Jabalpur Airport and 3½–4 hours' driving from the airport
  • Location: Madhya Pradesh (the state in central India)

4. Jim Corbett National Park — Rich Activities

Jim Corbett National Park is India's oldest national park, where you can find every geographical landscape , from marshy swamps to hills, from riverine belts to lakes.

Though it has over 200 tigers, it is not easy to see them in the dense foliage. It is more for wildlife and nature lovers than tiger sightseeing.

It is also the one of the only national parks in India where you have the opportunity to stay inside the park in over-100-year-old forest lodges.

Apart from tiger safaris, you can enjoy other outdoor activities like nature walks, cycling, river rafting, and rope courses.

  • How to get there: about 250 km from Delhi (5 hours' driving)
  • Location: Uttarakhand (a state in central north India)

5. Tadoba National Park — Night Safaris

Satpura National Park is notably Maharashtra's (the state in central west India's) oldest and largest national park.

Tadoba National Park is not as big, but has one of the highest populations of tigers in India . This means you would have a good chance of seeing a tiger.

Tadoba National Park also offers a night safari experience, which allows you to observe nighttime wildlife like rusty-spotted cats, civets, and a variety of owls.

There is also good chance to see the shy sloth bear and wild dogs. You can also find some of the Central India's best native woodland bird species in this forest.

  • How to get there: 1½-2 hours' flying from Delhi to Nagpur and 2½ hours' driving from the airport
  • Location: Maharashtra (a state in central west India)

6. Satpura National Park — Less Crowded

Satpura National Park is a relatively less-crowded park for tiger safaris, so it is no struggle to get safari tickets, except during festivals or New Year weekends.

The tiger population in the park is thought to be around 50, but they are sometimes more elusive. Leopards, gaurs (the largest of oxes), wild dogs, and sloth bears are seen more frequently.

There you can also do a walking safari, canoeing, birding, etc.

  • How to get there: 1½ hours' flying from Delhi to Bhopal Airport and about 3½-4 hours' driving (190 km)

7. Sasan Gir National Park — for Lion Safaris

What makes Gir National Park special is that it is the only place in the world outside Africa where a lion can be seen in its natural habitat.

There you can go on a lion safari by jeep to spot lions roaming free in the wild. You can also see leopards, different species of deer, Chowsingha — the world's only four-horned antelope, jackals, and many other animals, though no tigers.

  • How to get there: about 2 hours' flying from Delhi to Rajkot Airport and about 2 hours' driving (100 km)
  • Location: Gujarat (westernmost state in India)

There are three main factors you should consider when choosing a park for a tiger safari — the ease of getting there, the possibility of seeing a tiger, and the scenery of the park.

Bandhavgarh National Park, Ranthambore National Park, and Tadoba National Park will give you a better chance to see a tiger. Among them, Ranthambore is most recommended as it is easier to get to.

If you'd enjoy dense forest scenery more than the sighting of a tiger in open grassland scenery, with rivers, lush greenery, and other outdoor activities, Jim Corbett National Park, Kanha National Park, and Satpura National Park could be better choices for you.

If you would like a uniquely special experience (and if you are already in the Gujarat area of west India), an Indian lion safari in Sasan Gir National Park may be perfect for you.

We can help you book a tiger safari tour and arrange the transport for you. Just contact us .

For first-timers, the classic route with a tiger safari includes Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, and Ranthambore National Park, covering India's most iconic monuments and mesmerizing landscapes with a search for wild tigers on the way.

The trip usually takes about 9 days. Here is the sample itinerary:

  • Days 1–2: Delhi sightseeing (the iconic temples, tombs, and local markets)
  • Days 3–4: Head to Agra; Agra sightseeing (the Taj Mahal, baby Taj, Agra Fort)
  • Day 5: Drive from Agra to Ranthambore; see the abandoned Mughal city of Fatehpur Sikri on the way
  • Day 6: A tiger safari in Ranthambore National Park
  • Days 7–8: Head to Jaipur; Jaipur sightseeing (the ancient palaces and a cooking class)
  • Day 9: Back to Delhi for your departure

If you are interested in the itinerary, check out our 9-Day India Golden Triangle with Tiger Safari Tour  for more details. You can also contact us for any questions or needs. All our tours can be adjusted to your requirements.

Most national parks are open from mid-October to June and are closed during the monsoon season from July to early October.

For those who are especially interested in a tiger safari , the best time to visit the national parks is from April to June . This is due to drier weather conditions, making it easier for you to have the chance to spot the tigers, as they come out searching for water.

The cooler months from late November to February are the most comfortable time to visit, with pleasant midday temperatures, but vegetation remains dense and can make wildlife spotting challenging.
