The 5th Annual Beaches Tour of Homes will be held on Saturday, November 5th from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm through Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach.

Event check in will be available from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm on Saturday, November 5th at the following locations:

Community Presbyterian Church parking lot (150 Sherry Dr, Atlantic Beach, FL 32233 ). A "hop on; hop off" shuttle will be provided from this location.

First Christian Church of the Beaches parking lot (2125 OceanFront, Neptune Beach, FL 32266 ). A "hop on; hop off" shuttle will be provided from this location.

The Courtyard at 200 First Street in Neptune Beach. A complimentary bike tour hosted by Jax Surf & Paddle will be leaving from this location (times TBD). Pls note this is a BYOB (bring your own bike) tour but rentals are available HERE

VIP check in will be available from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm on Saturday, November 5th at Atlantic Beach Country Club ( 1600 Selva Marina Dr, Atlantic Beach, FL 32233 ). Sips, snacks, and guided Golf Cart tour provided from this location.

At check-in, guests will receive a tour map and event passport which will be required for entry into the homes.

VIP After Party will be held at a private Atlantic Beach residence following the home tour from 6:30 pm to 9:30pm - food & beverages will be served.

The Beaches Town Center Agency hosts the 3rd annual Beaches Tour of Homes. The tour takes place on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a VIP Patron Party to follow.

6th Annual Beaches Tour of Homes 2023

Saturday, November 4 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Atlantic Beach and Neptune Beach, Florida

Featuring a carefully-curated collection of stunning homes, wander your way through charming beach bungalows, modern feats and eccentric abodes. From cozy cottages to architectural wonders across the north beaches, there’s a little something for everyone on the 6th Annual Beaches Tour of Homes.

This fundraiser is organized by the Beaches Town Center Agency (BTCA) which is a nonprofit organization that works for the improvement of the Atlantic Beach and Neptune Beach Central Business District. BTCA helps to protect the unique character of the Beaches Town Center community by maintaining and enhancing its presence as an economic and cultural center. From holiday lighting & decorations, landscaping projects, public art displays, bike racks, benches, and other beautification projects, this volunteer board works with the cities of Atlantic and Neptune Beach on an ongoing basis to continue to improve the area.

A showcase of history and design

Inaugural home tour presents unique architecture of the beaches.

From a 1923 cedar-shake beach cottage to a 6,400-square-foot Energy Star-rated home to twin homes built almost completely underground - and everything in between, the homes on the inaugural Beaches Tour of Homes are varied in both style and history.

The self-guided tour will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, with volunteers on-site at each home to answer questions about that home's history and design. Tickets are $25 and may be purchased in advance online at beachestowncenter.com or at participating retailers Red Daisy, Jaffi's and Shore Things. On the day of the tour, they also may be purchased at any tour home or at tour headquarters located in the courtyard at 200 First St.

"What we want to do with the tour is to showcase everything our beaches have to offer," said Stevan Schwartzenberger, co-chair of the tour with Susan Hughes. "I was raised down the street and  when I returned to the area in 2012, I wanted to immerse myself in the community that had been so good to me growing up. I'm totally dedicated to seeing it evolve - but without losing its character."

The Beaches Tour of Homes is a fundraiser for the Beaches Town Center Agency, a nonprofit organization that supports the Town Center and provides its holiday decorations, bike racks and all the improvements to the area.

"A lot of people think that cities fund these things, but they don't, and we think that supporting and improving the central business district for Neptune and Atlantic beaches is a pretty important thing for residents and visitors alike," Schwartzenberger said. "So, I hope the tour provides participants with a look at the history and diversity of our beaches, and provides a lot of support for upkeep and improvements."

Unique to the tour are three designs by well-known architect William Morgan - the Atlantic Beach Lifeguard Station, the Dune Homes on Beach Avenue and 1927 Beachside Court. Tour organizers wish to pay homage to the architect by showcasing a trio of his original works.

Homes on the Tour:

143 Beach Ave.

Two 760-square-foot mirror-image homes were designed by William Morgan in 1975 to nestle right into the dunes of Atlantic Beach. Through the years, the view of the ocean had become obscured and the beautiful wood cladding around the exterior doors and throughout the interior were painted over. When Carl Drew and his wife Jennie Malloy bought the structures in 2012, they planned major renovations to begin the following year. By 2015, wooden walkways, new landscaping and oceanside platform decks were added to the homes' exteriors. Inside, powder rooms were added to the ground floors; all mechanical elements, plumbing and electrical systems were upgraded. The wood cladding was stripped of layers of paint and returned to its natural beauty. These are truly unique living spaces!

631 Beach Ave.

Built in 1923, this cedar-shake beach cottage is one of the original beach homes in Old Atlantic Beach. It was designed with the main house oceanfront, garages facing Beach Avenue and a large courtyard in between. The current owners bought the home in 2011 and undertook an extensive 18-month renovation. A third floor was also added, as well as a two-bedroom, two-bath apartment above the garage. The courtyard now features a saltwater pool, spa and summer kitchen as well.

1912 Nightfall Drive

Owners Karin and Daryl Grubbs had a goal of building a single-story, energy-efficient, low-maintenance, age-in-place forever home in Neptune Beach. As a general contractor and owner of Custom Homes, Daryl Grubbs builds homes and manages commercial projects, so taking on his own project wasn't an impossible dream. The result is a 6,400-square-foot, Energy-Star-rated, "Net Zero Energy Home,"complete with the latest green technology, and with LEED certification pending.

1725 Beach Ave.

For most of their married life, Karen and Don Wolfson have lived at 1725 Beach Ave. The home, known as the Watson House, was built in 1938 as a cedar-shake beach house. But, a redesign by previous owners in the late 1960s gave it the look of a mid-century modern house. With huge windows and sliding glass doors, the home is open to nature, including the beauty of the beach and the lush foliage of the shore. The Wolfsons have made additional changes, including enlarging a guest room, opening the ceiling of the master bedroom and putting in more windows and sliding glass doors.

2112 First St.

The owners of 2112 First St. met at the beach. While planning their wedding, they also tried to find a home that met all their wants and needs, which they found to be impossible. Instead, they decided to build their forever home. With the help of local architects from the Design Cooperative and builder Irina Johnson of Aria Homes, the result is a two-story contemporary, constructed with the latest in green, sustainable products, including ICF wall technology, hollow-core concrete planks for the roof and floors, and many over-sized picture windows. The design includes a flat roof deck, inspired by the roof deck at the Black Sheep restaurant in Five Points.

1927 Beachside Court

Built in 1989 and '90, this beautiful and unusual William Morgan house, often referred to as the Grandy House, was purchased in 2008 by the present owners, who have spent the last eight years lovingly restoring it. With an original design based on Balinese and South Pacific architecture, the home was built with native materials, with the living areas centered around a bay tree that has since been replaced with a palm and fern court. The use of exposed natural wood ceilings and balconies all around, as well as the exposed coquina block walls and chimney, add to the feeling of living outdoors. The owners restored and renewed all structural elements and made some cosmetic updates, including new bathrooms and kitchen.

1633 Selva Marina Drive

Built in 1968, Kari and Alan Ferguson's American Colonial home, right across the street from the new Atlantic Beach Country Club, is one of the original homes on Selva Marina Drive. When they bought it in 2003, renovations had been started by the previous owners, who had taken it down to the studs - and then sold it as is.

"We had no choice but to do some major renovations, so we decided to make it our own," Kari Ferguson said. "Construction took about 12 months. The original facade is still there and the original fireplace, but we added a new two-story wing with a new living room and dining room downstairs and new master suite upstairs."

The Fergusons also improved the backyard with a pool, outdoor kitchen and fire pit on the nearly one-acre lot. The area is now their favorite spot.

The home's classic taupe-gray exterior is warm and inviting, and the home is convenient to both the beach and country club.

"What people will see when the visit this home is not some designer's idea of how we all should live," Ferguson said. "They'll see a family home; they'll see how the Fergusons live, and they'll probably understand why we love this house."

Former Huntington Beach Mayor Shirley Dettloff, who remained involved until the very end, dies at 89

Huntington Beach resident Shirley Dettloff, who was known as a collaborator and stayed involved in city affairs for decades after her time on the City Council, has died.

Her husband, Bob Dettloff, said he found Shirley unconscious at home on Tuesday morning, and she was ultimately unable to be resuscitated. She was 89.

Shirley Dettloff served on the council from 1994 until 2000, including a year as mayor in 1998.

She still routinely attended its meetings and spoke during public comments, worked against homelessness and served as the governing board chair for Fountain Valley Regional Hospital, now known as UCI Health - Fountain Valley.

Concerned with the direction the current City Council majority was taking, she was also recently one of the founders of Protect Huntington Beach .

“She just was involved with every single major issue that I can think of in town,” said Linda Moon, who knew Dettloff for five decades. “She died with her boots on ... I didn’t always agree with her on everything, but she certainly was a tiger, and she died with her boots on. She was planning things that morning [when she died].”

Moon moved to Huntington Beach in 1974 and joined the League of Women Voters to find out what was going on in town. She met Dettloff, who was part of a group that had just formed a Bolsa Chica study committee.

That turned into the nonprofit Amigos De Bolsa Chica in 1976, formed to protect and preserve the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve. Dettloff was a founding member of the Amigos, becoming president and executive director, and also served on the California Coastal Commission.

A UC Santa Barbara graduate and retired teacher, Dettloff served as chair of the Huntington Beach Planning Commission, chair of the Orange County Harbors, Beaches, and Parks Commission and director of the Orange County Sanitation District. She was also heavily involved with the local Boys & Girls Club.

Kay Goddard worked with Dettloff for years on the foundation of the Shipley Nature Center , which also opened in 1974.

“She spent her time to act on her values,” Goddard said. “She had core values of community, embracing people ... and she acted on that. You can say many things about her, but not that she was disengaged. She was right in the middle of everything.”

Dettloff, a Democrat, and fellow former mayor the late Ralph Bauer , a Republican, worked together on the City Council in the mid-1990s to form the city’s Declaration of Policy on Human Dignity. The policy was substantially changed by the current City Council last year.

City Councilwoman Natalie Moser, who worked with Dettloff on the issue of homelessness in recent years, said that Dettloff encouraged her to run for a seat on the council in 2020. She said the late former mayor would almost always call or email her the day after a council meeting to check in.

Moser on Wednesday called Dettloff a tireless advocate who dedicated her life to public service.

“Her leadership extended beyond policies,” Moser said in some remarks she had prepared. “She embodied the spirit of community and compassion that made her a beloved figure well beyond our city limits. As I remember Shirley, I commit to continuing her legacy of service and integrity. She was not just a leader but a beacon of hope and love for all of us. For me, she was a great friend, mentor and third mom. She demonstrated how to live a life. She fought for dignity with principles and values and without partisanship at the forefront.”

Dettloff is survived by her husband of 68 years, Bob, who is 91. She was the mother of three, Rob Dettloff, Sue Bohannan and Julie Snider, and grandmother of Anna Bohannan.

No memorial plans were immediately announced.

Bob Dettloff said his wife took great efforts in her later years to mentor people or organizations who were trying to get involved in environmental or political activities.

“She and Ralph [Bauer] were two people who were not exactly on the same page every time, but they never had arguments,” he said. “They always were able to figure out the best way to solve the problem ... She was dedicated to any activity that made this city look better.”
