The Ultimate Weekend Getaway Guide to Breckenridge, Colorado.

Jen at Breckenridge Ski Resort Jan 2022

This ultimate weekend getaway guide to Breckenridge, Colorado is all you need to plan a successful weekend getaway to one of America’s most beloved ski & snowboard towns. Let’s go to Breckenridge!

Getting to Breckenridge, Colorado.

The drive from Ohio would have been almost a 24 hour road trip. Needless to say, for a weekend getaway we opted to fly versus driving. If you’re in the United States the closest international airport is Denver (DEN). After you arrive at the airport it’s about 95 miles (roughly 2-2.5 hours) to Breckenridge via car. Other nearby airports include Colorado Springs airport, Eagle/Vail Regional airport and Telluride airport. Smaller regional airports are typically more costly. Usually, we find the best flight deals flying into Denver International.

From Denver you’ll take Interstate 70 and Hwy 9 to Breckenridge. The route takes you through the Eisenhower tunnel and over the Continental Divide as you cross the Front Range of the Rockies.

Book your flight through Expedia for the best flight prices.

New to flying? I wrote a blog post for newbie flyers – check it out here .

Transportation for your trip.

I recommend getting a rental car for the weekend. You could uber or lyft from the airport to Breckenridge as an option too. If you aren’t staying in town you’ll spend a lot of cash just getting to and from town each day. If you’re taking gear for skiing, hiking or snowboarding it might not fit in an Uber/Lyft. Just a couple things to keep in mind. If you’re a season Pass holder (see below for Epic pass info later in blog post) you might have transportation to and from the airport included in your pass price.

We booked our rental through Routes Car Rental for our most recent trip to Breckenridge. Routes had affordable 4×4 options. I was hesitant to use a rental car company we’d never booked through, but we were pleasantly surprised with their service. Check them out if you’re thinking about booking a trip to Colorado.

Prepare for travel delays.

Sudden changes in weather, traffic delays and picking up your rental car can all add unplanned delays.

Make sure you monitor the weather, traffic conditions and flight delays/cancellations a few days leading up to your trip to ensure a smooth transportation plan for your weekend getaway. Once you land in Denver, check the traffic report with google maps or the Waze app on your phone. The interstate on the way to Breckenridge has a tendency to get congested on the weekends as travelers head into the ski towns.

TRIP TIP: If you have a late flight booked make sure whatever rental car place you select is open when you arrive. We’ve had late flights before and some rental car companies close at 10pm.

4×4 vehicle recommended

Keep in mind 4×4 is not 100% necessary, but I would highly recommend. Colorado weather is temperamental and you don’t want to be stranded on the highway if a bad storm hits.

Where to stay in Breckenridge, Colorado.

Breckenridge offers a ton of lodging options. The town has everything; ski-out condos, hotel lodging, VRBO’s, AirBnB’s, timeshares, renovated houses right in town, cabins outside town, basically anything you prefer you can find. Ski season gets busy so book in advance for the most options.

Where we stayed.

We stayed at a condo we found on AirBnb and it was perfect for us. The management company is called Alpine Meadows Management . They offer an array of options but they’re all right in town, walkable to the ski lifts, grocery stores, shopping, food, hiking and entertainment. We could literally walk from our condo to the Peak 9 lift-chair in about 10 minutes. The condo had plenty of room for our group, ample space to store our gear, washer & dryer (dryer especially useful for wet clothes and gear at the end of the day), great views, full kitchen and free parking on premises. We liked it so much after our first trip that for our next trip we called Alpine Meadows Management directly to see what they had available for our next stay. Both units we rented this year were perfect for our weekend getaways. 10/10!

Snowboard & Ski Passes.

This is a snowboard-til-ya-drop kind of town. If you plan on skiing or snowboarding I recommend buying passes in advance. The more you plan ahead the more savings you’ll get. Breckenridge Resort offers daily passes, season passes, value passes etc. Breckenridge is a Vail owned resort and part of the Epic Pass program . Breckenridge.com will provide you with all of the information needed to decide which pass is right for you. If you’re planning to ski or ride Summit County, Colorado definitely do some research ahead of time to figure out what pass is your best option based off your skiing/snowboarding plans.

Neighboring resorts.

Colorado offers world class ski & snowboarding options all over the state. You can find multiple resorts to spend the day shredding the pow in close proximity to Breckenridge. If you’re planning a longer trip its always fun to split your time up at different resorts to see what the whole area has to offer.

These are just a few resorts to keep in mind:

  • Copper Mountain
  • Loveland Ski Area
  • Winter Park Resort
  • Vail Summit Resort
  • Keystone Resort
  • Arapahoe Basin Ski Area
  • Beaver Creek

Our first trip to Breckenridge this year was super quick. Therefore, we stayed at Breckenridge Ski Resort both days to make the most of our time. However, for our second trip we shot a town over to Keystone to explore the slopes and see what Keystone Resort had to offer. We also snuck in some backcountry snowboarding right off Loveland Pass. Please keep in mind backcountry snow sports require extra planning and research. Not recommended for newbies. Do your research and always remember safety first. I actually sat this backcountry day out and provided my best Lyft/Uber driving for our crew (plus some of the locals who hopped in our truck bed) for a few trips up and down Loveland Pass.

Itinerary & things to do on your ultimate weekend getaway in Breckenridge, Colorado.

In an effort to use a little PTO time as possible we visited two times this year and still managed to only use 3 days of our precious vacation time. I’ll give a quick breakdown of both trips so you have an idea of how we spent our time at our 2 long weekend getaways in Breckenridge this year.

Breckenridge 3 day long weekend trip.

We used a long weekend in January in observance of MLK day for our first trip out to Colorado. Here’s a breakdown of how we spent our time .

3 days in Breckenridge

  • FRIDAY – flew into Denver, picked up luggage + rental car, drove to Breckenridge, ate quick food on way to Breck, checked into condo and got situated. We worked a full day Friday and had a late flight out of Cleveland into Colorado. Basically an evening of traveling was required to get us to our weekend shenanigans. The late flight saved us both $$ and a vacation day so we thought it was totally worth it.
  • SATURDAY – we woke-up, geared-up and grabbed breakfast burritos & coffee in town. Both breakfast and the ski lift at Peak 9 were within walking distance from our AirBnB. We grabbed our pre-paid snowboard passes at the pick-up window and hit the slopes at Breckenridge Ski Resort. You can pack lunch for the day or grab it in town or at the resort. We headed out at closing time around 4 pm, got ready for dinner and headed to Canteen on Main Street for dinner.
  • SUNDAY – We woke-up, geared-up and grabbed breakfast in town again. We hit the lifts at opening time and snowboarded all day until close again. Again, pack a snack/lunch or grab lunch in town or on ski resort. After snowboarding Sunday we headed back to our condo, showered and then headed into town for some shopping and dinner. We ate at Ollies Pub & Grub this night – about 2 blocks from our digs. Super convenient with great food and all the football games playing on the TV’s. We hit up a few local bars including the Blue Stag Saloon, RMU and Gold Pan Saloon after dinner.
  • MONDAY – As I mentioned above this was a super quick weekend getaway so the holiday Monday was our last day in town. Might as well end the trip with a delicious breakfast and a Bloody Mary at the Blue Moose Restaurant after we packed up and checked out of our home-away-from-home. To make the most of the scenery we decided to take the scenic route home via Loveland Pass (this adds about 30 minutes to your commute back to Denver but totally worth it in my opinion). We returned our rental car and flew home to Cleveland. Phew, SLEEPY but WORTH IT!

Breckenridge snowboarding trip 2022

Breckenridge 5 day long weekend trip.

We used 3 days of PTO for our second trip to Breckenridge. Flying out of Cleveland late allowed us to work the full day Tuesday. We used PTO time for Wednesday, Thursday & Friday. We returned home from our second trip of the season on a Sunday. Sundays are a little busier travel days but we didn’t run into any significant delays. Here is the breakdown of our second long weekend in Breck.

5 days in Breckenridge

  • TUESDAY – Travel day. We flew out of Cleveland into Denver, picked up our luggage and rental car and drove to Breckenridge. We stopped and grabbed food outside of Denver, checked into our Airbnb and got situated.
  • WEDNESDAY – We woke-up, geared-up and grabbed breakfast & coffee in town. Breakfast and ski lift at Peak 9 were within walking distance from our AirBnB. We grabbed our pre-paid snowboard passes at the pick-up window and hit the slopes at Breckenridge Ski Resort. You can pack lunch for the day or grab it in town or at the resort. We headed out at closing time around 4 pm, got ready for dinner and headed to Blue Stag Saloon for dinner downtown. Grab a cookie (or 6) to-go for dessert at Mountain Top Cookie Shop on Main street, you will NOT be disappointed. Perfect way to end your first full day in Breckenridge.
  • THURSDAY – We woke-up, geared-up and grabbed breakfast & coffee in town. Day 2 was a full day at Breckenridge Ski Resort. For lunch we fueled up with the best chicken sandwiches on the resort at the bottom of Peak 7. We headed out at closing time around 4 pm, got ready for dinner and headed to Canteen. We loved this place so much on our first trip we went back a few weeks later. If you like Mexican food, good service + good vibes you’ll love this place. If you’re still hungry after dinner hit the crepe stand on Main Street for some DELICIOUS crepes at Crepes Al La Cart. The line is usually stacked with people at all times but totally worth the wait if you like crepes. The line speaks for itself on how good they are!
  • FRIDAY – We decided to try out another local ski resort Friday for a change of scenery. We grabbed breakfast in town and headed to Keystone resort to snowboard Friday. We ate in town at Whiskey Star Smokehouse right on Main Street for dinner Friday night. You can find live music, comedy and good drinks in downtown Breckenridge so we obviously had to find some spirits after dinner!
  • SATURDAY – We mixed it up on Saturday with some backcountry snowboarding right off the side of Loveland Pass. Do your research if you plan to do any backcountry sports. It can be dangerous so skill level, research and many other factors come into play for backcountry shenanigans. After working up an appetite with our downhill adventures we headed back into downtown Breck for margaritas and Mexican at Sanchos Tacos + Tequila on Main Street. Three and a half days of snowsports in the Colorado Rockies will tire you out quick so this was a chill afternoon before our final dinner in town at Breckenridge brewery.
  • SUNDAY – Sunday was the last day of our snowy weekend getaway, womp womp. Breakfast was phenomenal as per usual at Blue Moose Restaurant. We drove back into Denver, returned our rental car and flew back to Cleveland. Sunday scaries kicked in immediately upon landing… when’s the next trip?

  • Outfits that you can layer
  • snow equipment, boards, bindings, boots, helmets, gloves, wool socks, pants, jacket, hats

  • Phone, camera, chargers
  • Hand warmers

Breckenridge, random tips & information for your trip!

  • BUY PASSES AHEAD OF TIME: Research and buy ski resort passes ahead of time if skiing or snowboarding. You will save exponentially if you plan ahead. We learned this the hard way. Had we known about the perks of the Epic pass we totally would have bought one right when they went on sale. I had actually planned/hoped to be pregnant this season so we opted not to buy them last year when they went on sale. Looking back we totally would have gotten our moneys worth if we had bought the Epic Pass. Also, tickets increase in the weeks/days leading up to your visit. Even waiting a day can sometimes cost you $20-40+ per ticket.
  • CARDS ARE RELOADABLE: If you get a pass for one trip, keep it. They are reloadable cards (they cost to ship to home) and if you opt to pick-up your pass when you arrive you have to stand in line if the resorts busy. We made two trips this year, threw away our lift pass from our first trip, not realizing they were reloadable. Had we known it was reloadable we could have saved shipping and/or the waiting line at the resort to pick up the second time we visited.
  • RESORTS CLOSE EARLY: Most ski resorts in Colorado close early (around dark) unlike the east coast resorts which offer lighting and stay open till late. You’ll want to get moving and start your day when the lifts open or you’ll lose valuable daylight snowboarding time.
  • SHOPS CLOSE EARLY: The shops in downtown Breckenridge also close early – think anywhere from 5-7ish. From what the locals told us, this year was especially rough for staffing due to covid.
  • BOOK DINNER RESERVATIONS: Pre-book dinner if and when you can. Check out my restaurant recommendations and try putting your name in ahead of time, or risk the long wait times. I like the Resy app and the open table app for planning ahead.
  • HOLIDAY WEEKEND MADNESS: As with any destination during the holiday weekends you can encounter long commutes, long lift lines, lack of lodging options and long waits at restaurants. Just plan ahead and you’ll be fine. We did MLK weekend this year and it really wasn’t bad but do keep in mind if you have an Epic pass or any other kind of special season pass that you check the holiday weekend restrictions.
  • 4X4 TRANSPORTATION: Consider 4×4 vehicle for rental car. The snow in Breckenridge is no joke, the streets aren’t always plowed like you may be used to at home.
  • ALTITUDE ADJUSTMENT : The Colorado mountains offer some of the United States highest snowboarding peaks. Give your body time to adjust to the altitude if you aren’t used to it, drink a ton of water, limit alcohol intake, get plenty of rest, get to lower altitude if you experience shortness of breath, chest pain, severe coughing or wheezing.
  • MOUNTAIN TIME: Colorado’s clocks run on Mountain Standard time. For instance, the East Coast is two hours ahead of Colorado. Adjust travel time and plans accordingly.
  • MARIJUANA: Colorado was the first state to legalize recreational marijuana. It’s legal to buy and consume pot if you are 21 or older. It is still illegal to smoke it in public. That includes, but is not limited to cars, buses, parking lots, ski resorts, bars, parks etc. You’ll see it being sold all over the place & you’ll smell it everywhere you go. Just good to know for out-of-towners!

Breckenridge Mountain Is Where Powder Hounds Love to Ski — and It's Getting Trendier Every Day

This Colorado resort is successfully balancing chic amenities with family-friendly programming, so cool families don't have to choose.

breckenridge trip planning

It all began with a forecast calling for 30 inches of snow. On the plane ride from Los Angeles to Denver, Colorado, the excitement from all the skiers and snowboarders on board was palpable. I was on my way to shred down some seriously fresh powder and sleep in one of America’s newest — and coolest — ski-in, ski-out hotels in Breckenridge.

When I arrived at Gravity Haus, the stylish hotel that doubles as a chic social club, l met with Clark Rothey, a legend among legends in Breckenridge, and the man who’d be introducing me to some of the best powder conditions in the country. For more than three decades, he's taught countless people how to ski and ride and has trained his fair share of instructors, too. On our way to the chairlift and down every run someone stopped to greet him, embrace him, and share a story about how Rothey taught them how to ride years ago — it quickly became clear that Rothey is the most popular guy around.

During our two days of riding together, he took me down his favorite runs to hunt for the best powder. That meant getting to Six Chair, a two-seater that opened up midday to bring us to first tracks down Breckenridge’s deepest snow conditions. It was terrain Rothey hit with ease and an unbridled joy that I assumed someone working the same job for 30 years would have lost decades ago. At the same time, Rothey wants to make it clear that just because Breckenridge is a powder hound’s dream doesn’t mean it’s not welcoming to beginners.

"What Breckenridge has always catered to and hit very, very well is the families,” he told me while pointing out that the resort offers a kids' program, rentals, and terrain for all skill levels. As for places like Gravity Haus coming in and spicing up the mountain neighborhood, Rothey is cool with that, too. “Things are just becoming more hip. It’s like, come and have a good time, whatever. We don't care if you're 50 years old or 22 years old. Come and there's something for you to play with.”

And those who just come for the après will no doubt be pleased by the many creative and upscale bars, restaurants, and hotels.

  • A long ski season that stretches from early November to mid-April
  • Family-friendly programming with private and group ski lessons available for all skill levels
  • A stylish après scene comprising bistros, cocktail bars, and aesthetically pleasing hotels

Breckenridge typically gets its first taste of snow in late October, but the ski season doesn't truly kick into high gear until late November and it lasts until mid-April. January and February are known as the months with the best conditions because there's lots of powder and the consistently low temperatures keep things from getting slurry. March is technically the snowiest month (with rain mixed in) and tends to see lower hotel rates and fewer crowds. To maximize your trip for budget and shorter lift lines, consider visiting in early March. You can still enjoy less crowded slopes later in the month and through the end of the season in April, but conditions are likely to be more slushy.

Where to Stay

Gravity haus.

For the best ski-in, ski-out access, there’s no better place to stay than Gravity Haus . Just off the base of Peak 9 and a block from the town's historic Main Street, the hotel provides plenty of plush space for you and your crew, with a Japanese-style onsen to soak in after hitting the slopes. It also has a bar, restaurant, and fabulous in-house coffee shop, Unravel Coffee . Gravity Haus members can take advantage of an off-site coworking space in the Wetterhorn Building near Peak 9.

Crystal Peak Lodge

Located at the base of Peak 7, this condo-style lodge also has ski-in, ski-out access. Each suite comes with a full kitchen, laundry unit, fireplace, and balcony, while shared amenities include two indoor pools and an outdoor hot tub. Apartment sizes vary and units can sleep between five and 11 guests, making this the perfect choice for large groups on extended vacations.

One Ski Hill Place

This upscale condominium-style property at the base of Peak 8 offers an array of accommodation styles from simple studios to four-bedroom apartments. One Ski Hill Place, a Rock Resort also has a spa, a casual dining restaurant, a quick-service cafeteria, and a bar that happens to be one of Breckenridge's most popular après-ski watering holes. Plus, the complimentary gear storage and locker rooms make the transition from slope to après a breeze.

Where to Eat

Cabin juice.

For a quick bite right off the mountain, head into Cabin Juice at Gravity Haus, a lodge-style restaurant decorated with vintage mountain gear. Despite the name, the restaurant doesn’t just serve juice, although it has plenty of nutritious, organic, and delicious items on the menu for brunch, après (think drinks and nibbles), and dinner. Ingredients are sourced from nearby farms and the menu changes seasonally.

Breckenridge Distillery

At Breckenridge Distillery , you can sample house-made spirits like bourbon, whiskey, and gin, but the big attraction for protein-hungry skiers is the steaks at the on-site restaurant. The menu features cuts like prime rib, tomahawk, New York strip, and butter-drenched picanha. The brewery has a hip industrial vibe with high ceilings and branded barrels on display.

White oak furnishings and sleek, caramel-colored banquettes create a contemporary ski-lodge vibe at Aurum Food & Wine . Order the four-course tasting menu for an overview of the seasonal New American cuisine, or opt for crowd-pleasing dishes like the curry-coated cauliflower or balsamic-braised short rib. The upscale yet relaxed spot has a daily happy hour and drinks are definitely a draw, from creative cocktails and mocktails to a tightly curated wine list categorized by music genres (pop, classics, jazz, etc.).

Where to Après-ski

Gold pan saloon.

You can get a feel for Breckenridge's gold-rush roots at this local landmark, which dates from 1879, but the Gold Pan Saloon isn't frozen in the past. With live music, a menu stacked with comfort food, and Carboy Winery vintages on tap, it's an enduringly popular après spot — and especially cozy near the wood stove.

Located right on the slopes at the base of Peak 8, TBar caters to the post-ski crowd with local craft brews, classic bar appetizers, and hearty burgers. During happy hour you can order a beer or cocktail for around $5 or less, accompanied by bargain snacks.

Robbie's Tavern

This locally owned bistro offers an international wine list and a wide selection of beers, plus snacks, bowls, burgers, and more for your post-ski cravings. Situated on Peak 8, Robbie's Tavern is a go-to for slopeside views from the large outdoor patio, where an electric fireplace takes the edge off the chill. Or grab a booth in the modern-rustic interior and dig into a plate of fries smothered with chili and house-made cheese.

Off-mountain Activities

The first order of business in town is to take a stroll down Main Street, where you'll find all the trendy restaurants and niche boutiques like The Breckenridge Hat Company and Marigolds Farmhouse Funk & Junk . If history piques your interest, Breckenridge History offers tours with themes like the mining industry or the bawdy legacy of the town's old saloons. This organization also operates many of the local museums and outdoor exhibits like High Line Railroad Park , which illustrates how the rail industry was a key factor in the town's development.

Breckenridge's annual International Snow Sculpture Championships take place at the end of January. The two-week event is split into two parts, sculpting week and viewing week, so plan accordingly, depending on whether you want to watch the impressive works being crafted by hand or admire the finished spectacle. You can also vote for your favorite pieces.

How to Ride

Lift tickets start at $188 per day, but can cost as much as $251 depending on when you go. There are discounts for buying online and booking your accommodations and tickets at the same time. This resort is also available on the Epic Pass , which is a great way to save if you sign up before the season's deadline. Note that lift tickets at Breckenridge are limited and can sell out so it's best to purchase them online as soon as you know your travel dates.

The most convenient place to rent your gear is at the resort , but the equipment is limited and likely to run out on busy days. Booking online is the best course of action, especially because there is a discount for reserving your rentals in advance. Around Main Street, you also have your pick of ski rental shops like Main Street Sports , Breckenridge Ski & Sport , and Alpine Sports , among others. If you don't have time to pick up your skis, you can have them delivered to your door by a service like Ski Butlers or Black Tie Skis .

Skiing and Snowboarding Info

Home to 2,908 skiable acres spread over five peaks, Breckenridge is an expansive resort where you'll be spoiled for choice with 187 different trails and 35 lifts. This includes the Imperial Super Chair, which is the highest lift in North America and worth riding at least once to experience the view at 12,840 feet above sea level. The resort does favor more experienced skiers with only 11 percent of the terrain suitable for beginners and over 50 percent dedicated to advanced and expert skiers. However, 11 percent is still quite a lot of terrain considering 40 percent of the resort's acreage is above treeline.

There are three main base areas: Peaks 7, 8, and 9. Tickets, rentals, and dining options are available at all three, but lessons only take place on Peaks 8 and 9. First-timers and beginners will be most comfortable here as there is no beginner terrain on Peak 7. And for trick-loving snowboarders, the resort has two terrain parks where you can practice your jumps.

Programming

Half- and full-day ski and snowboard lessons are available for all levels, from novices to experienced riders who want to level up their technical skills. If you're traveling with family or friends, you can book customized private instruction for your group.

For a longer, more immersive course, sign up for one of the resort's many camps, which include an all-terrain program for more advanced kids, a women's camp led by female instructors, and adaptive programs for skiers with disabilities. Adults of any level who want to fine-tune their skills can join the Breck Club , a 10-week program designed to help you advance.

How to Spend One Weekend in Breckenridge in the Summer

Day 1 in breckenridge.

hiking near breckenridge in the summer

Start your first day with a hike up Mount Royal. This trail is actually located about 20 minutes away in Frisco, CO, but it’s a great little detour. Park at Zach’s Stop and take the trailhead to the right. The trail is only about 2 miles to the top, but it is very steep. Be sure to have shoes with great traction for the way down!

After climbing the mountain (I was exhausted), take the other trailhead at the parking lot (to the left) Rainbow Lake for a much more leisurely stroll. Once you make it to the lake, this is a great spot for a picnic lunch! This is just about a 1.5 mile round-trip hike.

After a busy day of hiking, head back into Breckenridge and pay a visit to the famous troll . The troll is located down a short and easy trail. This 15-foot outdoor art exhibit is a must-stop in Breckenridge! To avoid having to pay for parking, you can park in the  Satellite Lot  on your way into town (via I-70) and ride the  Breck Free Ride  bus into town.

After visiting with Isak Heartstone (the troll), end your night with a delicious sushi dinner at Blue Fish and a cocktail at RMU.

Day 2 in Breckenridge:

town of Breckenridge in the summer

As long as your summer Breckenridge vacation is taking place somewhere between June 17th and September 5th, Day 2 will be spent at the Breckenridge Ski Resort (Epic Discovery). Start your morning with a free Gondala ride up to Epic Discovery via the BreckConnect. You then will have the choice between an Adventure Pass (unlimited access) or a Pioneer Pass (3 activities).

Epic Discovery offers an alpine slide, ropes course, bungie trampoline, Gold Runner Coaster, Gold panning, a rock wall, and mini golf.

(If you are visiting outside of these dates, check out the “Other things to do in Breckenridge” section for other options!)

After an exciting morning of fun, grab a late lunch at the Vista Haus located over 11,000 ft. above sea-level (at the top of the Colorado Chairlift)! Then head back down the mountain towards Mainstreet.

If you aren’t too exhausted, head to Mountain Time Escape Rooms for an exciting challenge! You get to choose from one of their 3 themes and then try to beat the clock to escape. After you escape room adventures, head to Kenosha Breck for a late night dinner! They are known for their steak and BBQ and have over 32 beers on tap!

If hiking it, it is an easy 2 mile hike to the cabins and valley view. From here, you can choose to continue further up the trail for some views from above.

Head to Alpine Sports for your next adventure. Here you can choose from renting a mountain bike, e-bike, or stand-up paddle board. If you choose to paddle, you can head to Maggie Pond which is located right off of Main Street.

If choosing to bike, Alpine Sports also offers guided mountain biking tours! If you prefer to bike alone, you can check out this guide for the best trails to hit depending on your level!

Scenic Drives

Boreas Pass and Mt. Baldy Road. Start at the Railroad Park, an open-air museum dedicated to the town’s pioneer history. Next, head up Boreas Pass Road. About a mile after you leave the Railroad Park, you’ll see a pull-off on the left where you’ll have stunning views of the Tenmile Range. Then turn off Boreas Pass Road onto Mt. Baldy Road (it’ll be on your left about half a mile past the pull-off) and stop at another pull-off in about 300 yards on your left. Finally, continue on Mt. Baldy Road and visit Country Boy Mine.

Lake Dillon Loop. Take Highway 9 North from Breckenridge, then turn right on Swan Mountain Road, which you’ll stay on until you come back down the mountain. Next, you’ll turn left on Highway 7, which will take you through the towns of Dillon and Silverthorne. Then you’ll take Dillon Dam Road to Frisco, where’ll you get on Highway 9 South back to Breckenridge.

Lake Dillon freezes during the winter, and from Dillon, there are designated routes for you to walk across it. My favorite pull-offs and scenic stops along this route are Sapphire Point and Marina Park in Dillon.

Located at the foot of the Rocky Mountains’ Tenmile Range, Breckenridge is famous for its ski resorts, Gold Rush history, and alpine activities. Breckenridge is a great day trip from Denver or Colorado Springs, but I highly recommend spending at least three days here.

This will give you two days to enjoy the town and one day for a day trip.

Winter Activities : Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing with  Gold Run Nordic Center , dog sledding and snowmobiling with  Good Times Adventures , and skiing/snowboarding. Breckenridge has five peaks, 2,908 skiable acres, 187 trails, four terrain parks, and the tallest chairlift in North America.

Breckenridge is a very budget-friendly destination from May – October. Daytime temperatures will only peak in the low 70s in July, so you’ll want layers for the mornings and evenings.

Group Trip Guide – Winter

Group ski trip planning guide.

Getting out to ski or snowboard with your friends, family or co-workers is an epic way to create memories that will last forever. It doesn’t matter if you are planning a family reunion or a caravan of friends, Breckenridge Ski & Sport will be here to make your trip stress free so all you have to worry about is what run you’re hitting first. From our sport ski package to our demo ski package, we have gear for all skill levels.

Purchase Your Lift Tickets

Lift tickets are a necessary item on a group ski trip. Depending on the size of your group, you may be eligible for a group discount. In order to book group lift tickets, you will need to contact the resort. We have provided links to the resorts below.

Keystone Ski Resort

Keystone is just 17 miles from Breckenridge and offers terrain that is great for beginners. You can call 970.754.0055 or email [email protected] to book your group’s lift tickets.

Copper Mountain

Copper Mountain is 18 miles from Breckenridge. Copper is a good option if you have a group with different skill levels. The front size is full of nice greens but the back bowls and Sierra lift have blue and black runs. Visit https://www.coppercolorado.com/plan-your-trip/groups/bulk-tickets to purchase bulk lift tickets.

Breckenridge Ski Resort

Breckenridge does not explicitly break down discounted group lift tickets. However, they are apart of Vail Resorts which does offer bulk ticket discounts. We recommend contacting them at [email protected] where an agent will answer any other questions.

Rent Your Ski and Snowboard Equipment

Next line of business – your ski equipment.  You can’t have a good day on the slopes without the correct gear, no matter what skill level you are.  We offer three different ski packages: sport skis for beginners, performance skis for intermediate skiers and demo skis for experts. Our knowledgeable staff will be sure to get you set up with the correct gear swiftly so you can get to the mountain in no time.

Get To The Slopes

Trying to navigate transportation for a group can be such a headache between the pricey parking fees, lack of parking spots at the base, and limited experience of driving in inclement weather. You can even skip the rental car altogether. Breckenridge Ski & Sport offers free in-town transportation to get you fitted with your gear and cruising down some terrain in no time. Our shuttles’ maximum capacity is 14 making it easier than ever to get everyone to the base together. If you have a vehicle, opt for parking in the Airport Road lot for free parking for the day, then utilize the wonderful free bus system throughout Breckenridge on the way back.

What you need to know when visiting Breckenridge

6 Planning Tips For Your Trip to Breckenridge

It can be confusing to know what you need to plan out before your trip vs what you can wing / find to do while you are here.  Make the most of your time in Breckenridge with these expert trip-planning tips and tricks.

Know What to Plan Ahead of Time

Dogsledding at Goodtimes

Dogsledding is one of the most popular winter activities in Breckenridge.

When it comes to guided activities like guided fly fishing tours, dogsledding tours, snowmobling tours, whitewater rafting, horseback riding, and other popular seasonal activities , it’s crucial to book in advance.

Guided activities book up first. They hold a limited number of spots and tend to fill up quick. Try and be flexible with dates and remember there’s typically more room on a weekday than on busier weekends. Mid-week has the most availability. For weekend and holiday bookings, try and call at least three weeks in advance.  The exception is holidays.  If you are coming around a holiday weekend book as soon you can to ensure your spot. Worried you waited too long?  Don’t worry,  just give the business a call.  They can easily check bookings, suggest times and give you all the information you need on the activity.

HINT: Remember, many companies’ names sound the same and sometimes visitors show up at the wrong rafting company or bike rental location. Save your online reservation or take a screenshot for easy reference on your smartphone.

If you aren’t a planner, don’t worry. There are also a lot of awe-inspiring activities that don’t require reservations .  Hiking , snowshoeing, biking, nordic skiing, skiing never fill up and are easy enough to take part in at a moments notice.

Local's Tip

If your group is here to ski, book gear rentals and purchase lift tickets online in advance to save money and time spent at counters and ticket windows. Ask about package deals on skis or boards, boots and helmets and inquire about group, student and military discounts on lift tickets.  For the biggest savings, you’ll want to purchase your lift tickets 7 days or more in advance.

Hint: Arrange to pick up gear and lift tickets the night before so you can head straight to the slopes in the morning.

Kid and Pet Sitters

breckenridge trip planning

Take advantage of pint-sized adventures the whole family will love.

Traveling with children or pets? Breckenridge goes above and beyond to welcome pets and our kid-friendly restaurants and activities make us a top family destination year-round. Dog-sitting and walking services and trusted childcare are easy to source. Just be sure to book them in advance of arriving in Breckenridge.

Resort Sitters,  Mountain Sitters , and Care.com are excellent resources. During the summer, the Breckenridge Recreation Center  and Mountain Top Children’s Museum offers day camps. Mountain Top Children’s Museum also offers an evening Kid’s Night Out program year-round. If the kids are learning how to ski or snowboard, book your group or private lessons online for the lowest guaranteed price.  Care.com and SitterCity.com are also popular ways to find local sitters.

For pet sitters, try Breckenridge Dog House (tip: they book up fast, so call ahead),  Rover.com and Care.com for reliable help.

Transportation

For the smoothest travel to and from Denver International Airport , ditch the rental car and book a shuttle. Numerous shuttle companies transport you, your luggage and your gear from DIA to Breckenridge and back. They’re warm, safe and offer water and wifi for your journey. TripAdvisor or a quick Google search will help you find the best company.

Once in Breckenridge, it’s extremely easy to go carless .. Take advantage of the Free Ride town-wide transit system , the Main Street trolley, Lyft and Uber and hotel shuttle services.  Find more tips on getting to Breckenridge and getting around once you’re here .

When you Get Here

Dress for the climate.

Rocky Mountain Underground Ski Shop and Bar

Breckenridge knows gear. If you are in the market for some new equipment, you’ll find a great selection in town.

Layers are key in the mountains no matter the season, so be sure to wear or carry a fleece, windbreaker or waterproof jacket, sunscreen and sunglasses, a reusable water bottle and maybe even gloves and some extra socks.

Don’t have what you need? Shop here. Breckenridge’s downtown retail district is lined with gear and rental stores . We even have a specialty sock shop, hat shop, multiple sunglass, goggle and helmet shops and all the big brands in skiwear and sun-protecting outerwear.

Plan Your Dining

group dines in Breckenridge, CO

Find worldly inspired cuisines, fresh take on culinary classics and plenty of craft beer and cocktails made from our local brewers.

Most restaurants in Breckenridge don’t take reservations. The exception? Many of the higher-end establishments now take reservations through OpenTable.com . A handful of Breckenridge restaurants offer special event spaces that can be reserved for large groups and private gatherings.

If the restaurant of your choice doesn’t accept reservations, don’t fret—show up early, put your name on the list and then stroll and shop historic downtown Breckenridge while you wait to be beeped or texted.

There are also numerous grocery and catering service companies here for easy-button stay-in dining.
