Memento Mori

Chasing Peaks In Dalaguete: Scaling 5 Scenic Summits In 1 Day

Chasing Peaks In Dalaguete: Scaling 5 Scenic Summits In 1 Day

Dalaguete is, for me, a breath-snatching adventure wonderland hard-wired for the intrepid and wide-eyed hiking enthusiast. Famed for its chilly atmosphere, collection of towering peaks and heavenly scenery, this beloved town beckons travelers who are yearning for a healthy dose of fun and adventure. Whether you’re an avid shutterbug or a bona fide outdoor guru, you’ll definitely love the enthralling hiking experiences that Dalaguete has to offer.

From my high school days in Don Bosco to my recent adventures with Team Bang, I’ve had the privilege of scaling the beautiful peaks in Dalaguete on numerous occasions.  And normally, I only hit a peak or two, whenever I set foot on Dalaguete for a hike. But one day, an ambitious and crazy idea came into mind, as I was planning my next hiking trip. Inspired by James Glendon’s Dalaguete 4-peaks-in-1-day hike, I was on a mission to chase 5 to 7 peaks in Dalaguete in just one day.

Don’t get me wrong – I’m not playing a game of one-upmanship with James.  He is, hands down, a good friend and a trustworthy, brainy travel buddy with an endless array of catchy hugot lines. But, I knew for a fact that scaling a bunch of peaks in Dalaguete can bolster my confidence as well as give me a sense of fulfillment.  Plus, I was also determined to catch sight of Casino Peak , without the mist and fog, on a clear sunny day.

The charming folks who joined me on this day trip

Unlike most of my crew’s trip, only a few Team Bang mainstays were available for this hiking escapade – Gelique, Wilfred, Coach Ren, Beth and RJ. Thankfully, there were six other local adventurists who accepted our invitation for our Dalaguete hike – Jon, Shiela, Jovy, Juan, the graceful one Cherwinn, as well as the renowned Instagrammer Marc Jonell, or AKA “The Weekday Traveler”.

To reduce our transportation expenses, we opted to rent a multi-cab with Boss Patring as our driver, for the entire day. As I’ve said before, habal-habal rides from Poblacion, Dalaguete can very often cost you a great deal of money.

With our unique itinerary, it would likely cost us around PHP 500 to 800 per person to hit all the spots in our list. But since we took the smarter and cheaper alternative, we just spent PHP 250 for a whole day’s worth of transportation in Dalaguete.

Our first stop – Tabon Peak, Tabon, Dalaguete

At first, it felt a little awkward, with all the different faces in the group.  After all, it’s been a while since I’ve invited more than 4 newly-met people on my hikes.

But as we got closer to our first stop, Tabon Peak, our conversations got deeper and more interesting. And eventually, we were laughing and talking to one another as if we’ve known each other for years. I guess that’s what happens, when you put together a group of like-minded strangers. As they say, birds of the same feather make a good feather duster.LOL!

Upon our arrival, we wasted no time, and looked for the trail to Tabon Peak in Tabon, Dalaguete. Afterwards, we took a short climb to the summit of our first destination – Tabon Peak.

The trail to Tabon Peak was, for me, rather short and easy. But, some of the squad’s members did have some problems, going up and down, with its steep slope and loose soil.

As for the view, it was pretty impressive and Instagrammable. While I’ve seen views more jaw-dropping than this one before, I was still impressed the panoramas offered by Tabon Peak.

As always, I snapped a shot of Team Bang’s trademark pose on the summit.

Likewise, I got a solo picture with my favorite Guy Fawkes mask on.

With the first peak in the books, it was time to move on to our next destination in our Dalaguete weekend getaway – the extremely scenic Casino Peak.

Casino Peak – the Chocolate Hills of South Cebu

With Boss Patring on the driver’s seat, we took on the rough road leading to Casino Peak.  From time to time, we, the boys of the squad, have to jump off the multi-cab to prevent any mishaps on the supremely bumpy spots on the road.

The boys did enjoy every minute of our walk, though, thanks to the unique and photogenic rock formations in the area. As a matter of fact, we even decided to climb on these rocks, so we can get plenty of awesome photographs.

But, as we were making our way to the rocks, Marc all of a sudden slipped, causing a small yet nasty cut on his right forearm.  It wasn’t alarming or serious, and Marc, like a Spartan hiker that he is, just shook it off, and said “it’s just a battle scar”.

Luckily, there was a well-prepared girl scout in the group, Jovy, who brought a first aid kit.

On the way to the Casino Peak, a familiar face came into sight riding a sturdy motorcycle. As it turned out, it was the barangay councilor and the leader of a group of drivers in Mantalungon, whom we met during our first hike in Casino Peak.

We had a quick chat with the councilor, talking about the recent surge of visitors in Casino Peak. Before we parted ways, he thanked me for helping him and his group’s members acquire more passengers to Casino Peak.

Of course, I was delighted to know that one of my micro-adventures has made a small yet positive impact to their community.

Moments later, we arrived at the base of Casino Peak, where a new signboard greeted us.

After registering, we passed by its rocky trail and ascended to the top of Casino Peak, Dalaguete. This time, there was no horny or mean goat around to scare the daylights out of us.

And finally, we got see the real beauty of Casino Peak, without the thick fogs, mist and downpours.

I must say it was quite a sight, though it wasn’t my first time seeing it.

From group poses to jump shots, we took a plethora of photographs on the summit. Everyone, even the shy ones, was obliged to strike a pose from a variety of angles on the peak.

But, as far as I’m concerned, the best past part of our climb to this peak was Cherwinn unveiling his new addictive tag line “graceful”, which set the tone and added an element of humor to whole trip. From that moment on, everything was just fun and downright graceful .

Quite a tag line, I must say. Thanks for that, Cherwinn – the newly dubbed Grace-Fool Wanderer.

We, then, descended to swing by one of the best surprises of our Dalaguete trip.

Techno Farm – arguably the best surprise of our Dalaguete trip

The Techno Farm was a last-minute addition to our Dalaguete travel itinerary. The night prior to our trip, Beth sent a photo of the eye-catching blooms of the farm via Facebook messenger. Enthralled and intrigued by the floral display, I instantly added it to our travel plans.

Even though it’s not a scenic and challenging peak, I still enjoyed our quick layover to the Techno Farm in Dalaguete. Not only was it a visually enticing place, but I also learned a couple of things about the farm and its charming flower – the Snapdragon, which usually doesn’t flourish on tropical soils.

According to the caretaker, the farm and the flowers are still on the experimental stages. Through our chit-chats with the caretaker, we’ve discovered that Mantalongon, Dalaguete is one of the two places in the Philippines (the other one is Benguet) to breed this type of flower.

And, if the experiment goes well, the town’s LGU will build a bigger farm, and make it an attraction in Mantalongon, Dalaguete, Cebu. Watch out Sirao Flower Farms!

And, there were also other beautiful flowers and vegetables displayed inside the farm. As you can see, the Grace-Fool Wanderer made a pose in one of the areas of Techno Farm.

As for the entrance fee, the farm can be accessed and enjoyed for everyone’s favorite price of zero pesos. Yes folks, it’s free, as of now!

After our visit to Techno Farm, we headed to Mantalongon Market, to grab some lunch and refill our water bottles. With our stomachs and energy replenished, we drove to Maloray, Dalaguete, to hike one of my favorite mountains in Cebu – Kandungaw Peak.

Kandugaw Peak, Sunset Peak and Lover’s Peak

Upon our arrival at the peak’s base, we registered our names, paid the fees, and commenced on our hike.

Usually, the hike to Kandungaw Peak via Maloray, Dalaguete starts with the lengthy concrete stairs, which can be rather painful on the knees. But on the bright side, our guide was a familiar with a different path leading to these gorgeous peaks in Dalaguete.

All in all, the Maloray trail is a much shorter and easier path to Kandungaw, as compared to the Badian trail. Personally, I prefer the Badian trail since it’s a bit more challenging and picturesque. What’s more, the trail includes a stop to an underrated mountain in Cebu – Dalas-ag Peak.

Moments later, we arrived at the pinnacle, where we all swept away into bliss by its awe-inspiring vistas.

Although I’ve scaled Kandungaw Peak twice before via Badian, I still can’t get enough of these mesmerizing panoramas.  It’s one of the few peaks in Cebu where you can enjoy 360-degree views of Badian Island, Negros, Argao and Bohol.  On a clear day like our day hike, you can even see the lofty skyscrapers of metro Cebu from this vantage point. Don’t believe me? Just ask my fellow Team Bang members.

They even said that Cebu City felt like just a stone throw’s away, though technically it will take more than 3 hours of travel to get to the city from Kandungaw.

As with most of our group hikes, we took turns posing on the summit. If there was a contest for the best pose in Kandungaw Peak, the clear-cut winner would be Jon, who bested Predu Wolf’s jump shot and the Grace-Fool Wanderer’s raunchy pose on the flag pole.

As we were making our way to our next peak, a trio of awesome female hikers reached out to me, and asked me about my future hikes. I didn’t get their contact numbers, and hopefully, they will contact me through Facebook, so I can invite them in one of my future hikes.

Once we’ve arrived at Sunset Peak, we paused for a while, and waited for the other group to wrap up their pictorials. Moments later, we scaled the mountain, and cherished the views from the top.

We soaked up the scenery, breathed in fresh mountain air, and snapped dozens of photograph.

The Grace-Fool Wanderer was as energetic and happy as a chimpanzee, climbing and leaping through the rocks with his bare feet. And, by the way, did I mention that he was just wearing a pair of slippers for this hike?

Speaking of the Grace-Fool Wanderer, we also made a pose with him as the centerpiece of our photo.

He said it was it his own grace-fool depiction of the Spolarium, but the way I see it, it was like the aftermath of  the “Little Mermaid” being raped by a school of puffer fish.

From there, we made a quick hike to the nearby Lover’s Peak, and admired the outstanding vistas.

Needless to say, we took a glut of photographs on Lover’s Peak, including group shots and hilarious ones.

The funniest photo was Juan’s jump shot, snapped by the Grace-Fool Wanderer. In my opinion, the Juan looked like a giant on the photo.

With the sun about to set, we descended from Lover’s Peak, and made our way to the base, which capped off our fascinating Sunday adventure.

Multi-cab rental information:

Important notes:

  • Bring at least 2 liters of water.
  • Be a responsible traveler, and practice the LEAVE NO TRACE principles.
  • Pack ion beverages like Gatorade and Pocari Sweat.
  • Wear trekking shoes or sandals (ahem, the Grace-Fool Wanderer).
  • Bring umbrella, armguards hat and sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun’s heat.
  • Prepare your rain gear, in case of downpours.

We didn’t get to our original target of hitting 7 peaks in Dalaguete. For some, it seems like a pipedream to hike 7 peaks in one day, but it was totally doable. We could have easily hiked Osmeña Peak or traveled to Bandera Peak in a jiffy. But for me, savoring the moment of your adventure is far more rewarding than hitting a cluster of peaks. And besides, I absolutely had a blast, enjoying the company of my graceful hiking buddies. To top it all off, Juan made the hike so relaxing with his classic and nostalgic 90s Eraserheads tunes.

Adventurous Things You Can Do in Dalaguete, Cebu

Table of Contents

From the beach to the mountain, the southern town of Dalaguete in Cebu certainly has a lot to offer for visitors who love history, the water and great hikes.

St William of Aquitaine church in Dalaguete Cebu

If you are looking for something adventurous during your next visit to Cebu, don’t forget to visit this famous place (since it is home to the highest peak in the island) and do these recommended activities.

Get to know its history

dalaguete munisipyo

When you visit a new place, the best way to start your tour is to learn more about its history and its people. Visit Museo sa Dalaguete and discover the rich heritage of the municipality. The museum is located at the second floor of the Municipio, a heritage structure built in 1832 which has been the center of government during the Spanish times.

You can also try and visit the numerous heritage houses found within the municipality.

Visit the Obong Watchtower

obong watchtower

The Baluarte, or watchtower, is located near the sea since it was used as an early warning system against Moro raiders and pirates. You might not do a lot here but you will definitely feel like you have been transported back in time.

Chill at the public park

Dalaguete is packed with a lot of things to do so before you jump to those adrenaline-pumping activities, hang out at the public park and enjoy the swings and see-saw like a little kid.

Hang out at the beach

dalaguete beach park

Another way to prepare yourself for your upcoming adventures is to chill by the beach and maybe camp overnight to get fully energized. The Dalaguete Beach Park is one of the best choices for campers and backpackers but you could also try out other resorts such as Dakong Bato Beach and Leisure Resort.

Visit the highest peak in the island

osmena peak dalaguete

Surprisingly, the highest peak of Cebu, which stands at 1,013 MASL, is among the easiest trails to take. Osmeña Peak , named after former President Osmeña, is just 40-minutes away from the beach and only takes around 15 minutes to get to the peak from the foot of the mountain. Experience the chill and fog when you get to the top early morning or late afternoon.

Take a dip at Obong Spring

obong spring

After your trek to Osmeña Peak, you can cool down this freshwater spring near the beach. Located in Barangay Balud, locals say that the salt water from the sea combines with the freshwater during high tide.

Taste their delicacies

dalaguete torta

A visit to any place is not complete without taking yourself into a gustatory adventure. Dalaguete is best known for delicacies such as torta, which looks like a mamon; bibingka; and tostado, which are biscuits that taste like barquillos. You can get them for snacks or pasalubong at the public market or roadside stalls and pair them off with black coffee.

To get to Dalaguete, take a plane ride to Cebu and make your way to the South Bus Terminal. From there, take a 3 to 4 hour bus ride to the southern town of Dalaguete.

Siquijor: An Island that Rose from the Sea

Dalaguete: The Summer Capital and Vegetable Basket of Cebu

Dalaguete is a first class municipality 84 kilometers southeast from Kilometer Zero of the Cebu Provincial Capitol. Hailed as the Vegetable Basket of Cebu and its Official Summer Capital (via Cebu Provincial Board Resolution 215-2006 dated January 23, 2006), the town is well-known for its cooler than the usual highlands where about 60 tons of farm fresh vegetables are harvested and delivered on a daily basis to Cebu City and the neighboring towns and provinces.

Dalaguete: The Summer Capital and Vegetable Basket of Cebu

The town’s array of crowd drawer destinations includes, among others, the refreshingly cool Obong Spring (where the dalakit tree, reputedly the very tree where Dalaguete got its name still stands), the Mantalongon mountain ranges (home to the unique rock formations and the route of choice leading to the famous Osmeña Peak), and the Dalaguete Beach Park (part of the former Argao Beach Club).

Indeed, the town is host to some of Cebu’s remaining natural heritage sites – breath-taking mountain ranges with its chilling natural breeze that almost soothes to the bone, enchanting forest patches that are home to some of the world’s most endangered flora and fauna, and coral reefs teeming with diverse marine life.

The Mantalongon highlands are increasingly becoming a favorite hideaway of both university students and young professionals alike most especially on weekends and during vacations either to test their raw strength and courage in scaling the heights or simply to escape the monotony and noise of urban life.

Recently, there is a significant increase in tourist arrivals of foreigners and locals alike who look forward to a peaceful countryside life either under the sun, sea and sand or up there at a thousand feet above sea level at the very heart of nature.

Natural Attractions and Landmarks

Want to go nature trekking or wanna cool down after basking around under the heat of the sun? Or perhaps you want to discover caves under some rock formation? Dalaguete has it all when it comes to mountain climbing, camping or nature trekking or skinny deeping. Campers and mountain climbers from all over the province come to this place for nature trekking and mountain climbing due to the cold climate of Osmena Peak and the icy cold spring of Obong.

  • Obong Spring

Brgy. Obong - Host to a 400-year-old dalakit tree (Ficus benjamina Linn) to which, according to legend, Dalaguete's name is derived from.  Local and foreign tourists from all walks of life make their way to Barangay Obong, most specially on weekends, to unwind and bathe in the icy cool waters of the spring.

  • Osmeña Peak

Brgy. Mantalongon - Formerly known as Tanawan, presumably because one has a panoramic view of Badian's Zaragosa Island to the west and the Province of Bohol to the east, O-Peak, as it is now popularly known since it became a favourite horse-riding destination of former President Sergio Osmeña, Sr., is the highest peak in the Province of Cebu at 1,042 meters above sea level.

  • Kulabyaw Cave

Brgy. Mantalongon - Before reaching Osmeña Peak, the highest peak among the Mantalongon range, trekkers pass through a cave where it is famous for its thousands of bats and other nocturnal denizens flying in and out of the cave. That's why it is called Kulabyaw Cave.

  • Dingayop Water Falls, Caves, and Spring

Brgy. Obo - Whose waters originate from two creeks, the Barangay Langkas-Mantalongon creek and Barangay Obo-Mag-alambak-Mantalongon-Grandchina.  The Natural Springs flow sufficiently in many areas along the Dalaguete River and one of them had been once historically told as a source of drinking water of the Spanish friars from the town of Dalaguete due to its pure and cool spring water and the ancestors called the spring as “Kalalusan sa Pari” or the Spring where the Parish Priest fetches drinking water and it is now the actual source of drinking water, benefiting thousands of people in the barangays of the town of Dalaguete.

  • Breeding Ground of Flying Foxes

Brgys. Malones-Lanao (Lagnason Creek) - This hidden valley is a haven for biodiversity and endemic flora and fauna.  Lagnason Creek is a natural habitat of four species of huge flying foxes roosting together by the hundreds in one colony which is unique and the only one of its kind in the region.  Two of these species are the world’s largest flying foxes (kabog) and this is the only place in Cebu where you can find these species.

Eco-Adventure Destinations

The Municipality of Dalaguete, Cebu is indeed a place of alluring wonders -  breathtaking mountains, charming heritage sites, enchanting beaches, fascinating forests with unique flora and fauna, and spectacular reefs teeming with diverse marine life.

  • Mag-alambak Garden and Environs

Mantalongon - A visit to Mag-alambak will reveal a tropical enclave of serene natural beauty surging along the greenery of Barangays Mantalongon, Dumalan and Obo. Formerly the site of the Southern Cebu Reforestation Development Project (SCRDP), this area is a 48 hectare wonder accessible through the Poblacion-Mantalongon Road. Today, the Dalaguete Municipal Government has commenced on the development of the area into an eco-tourism destination and the mountain resort as provided for by the Co-management Memorandum of Agreement undertaken between the Dalaguete LGU and the DENR-Region 7.

It is situated in barangay Mantalongon, the “Little Baguio of Cebu” and the also the “Vegetable Basket of Central Visayas. The Cebu Provincial Board has officially declared Mantalongon as the “Summer Capital of Cebu” through SP Resolution No. 215-2006. This official declaration is one good reason why you should visit one of Cebu’s amazing adventure and leisure spots.

  • Bandera Trail and Its Legends

Dumalan - Explore this newly discovered trail. The entire family can trek along the inner secrets of the mountains of untold legends and historical sites. The trail starts off at Mag-alambak Garden and the way in is marked by the “Tres Marias”  - the guardians of the forest. “ Legend has it, that three lovely sisters have been betrothed to a mighty giant whose abode encompasses the peaks overlooking the ocean. The sisters refused to marry the giant for fear of slavery. As they tried to flee, the angry giant cast a spell and turned them into three black rocks. Through the passage of time, the rocks which are now lying under the trees, along a grassy slope, though all covered with moss and tiny vegetation and has become a habitat for small insects, still projects the aura of the three sisters. Since then they have been considered by the locals as the guardians of the forest.”

The trail culminates in a peak which, unknown to many, was used by the American military during the Second World War. Oral accounts has it that the summit which towers 825 meters  above sea level, used to house military communication, and triangulation contraptions and a flag pole. Strategic indeed. The summit of Bandera Peak offers an unlimited visual extravaganza making visible cities of Cebu and Tagbilaran, as well as the whole stretch of Bohol Strait, the island of Siquijor and the coastal barangays of Argao and Dalaguete.

Protected by the Dalaguete Bantay Lasang, Bandera Peak is dotted with lush tropical foliage and a variety of ferns, orchids, and shrubs. Experience a “Mt. Everest-like-sensation” from the months of September to January as the peak is most often covered with thick fog. The rest of the months offer an unhampered visibility. Start off at the Cawayan Sumbria Bridge and experience a river trek that could put you on the list of certified adventurers. Get a treat of huge black boulders , untouched waterfalls, treacherous river banks, impenetrable walls of thorny plants and slippery rocks. Scout for elusive monkeys and fruit bats (kabog) as huge as foxes and observe in close range the characteristics of the  fabled and endangered Cebu Black Shama (siloy) as they belt out their enchanting bird songs.

Lagnason creek is a natural habitat of four species of huge flying foxes roosting together by the hundreds in one colony which is unique and the only one of its kind in the region: Large flying fox, Golden-crowned flying fox, Little Golden-mantled flying fox, Island flying fox. Two of these species are the world’s largest flying foxes (kabog) and this is the only place in Cebu where you can find these species (DBCMC, CBCF 2006).

Osmena Peak in Dalaguete

Osmeña Peak in Dalaguete

The Vegetable Basket of Cebu is famous of their green plants that are perfect for growing. Located in the south of Cebu, Dalaguete is the best place to see such green scenery and the place to unwind and hit the spring. For a small province, there are a lot of adventures you could actually do when you visit the place.

1. Indulge in spring and beach

Dalaguete got a fair share of spring and beaches. Obong Spring is famous for the trees called “dalakit” where the province got its name. The cool icy spring is what attracts most of the tourists. It is also freshwater and during the high tide, the locals said that, the salt water from the sea will go to the spring. Gakub Spring is not that famous but it still offers the cold water that is crystal clear, you could actually see the rocks on the bottom.

Blessed with white sand and the coconut trees nearby, the Dalaguete Beach Park is open in public wherein you could work on your tan and swim until your heart content.

2. Visit a cave

Kulabyaw Cave are where hikers and trekkers pass by to reach the Osmeña peak. The cave is known for the handful bats and other animals living in the place.

3. Climb a mountain

One of the frequent things that tourists do in the area is to climb the Osmeña Peak . Take a deep breath of fresh air and cool wind, you can really feel it flapping against your face. This is one thing you’ll experience in the peak. Not only that, the view will leave your jaw hanging as you stare around with the multiple jagged hills or known as Mantalungon ranges which differ from that of Chocolate Hills because of the formation of the rocks that are much pointed. The visible shoreline of southwest Cebu and the island of Negros Oriental can be seen in the area. Many hikers spend the night in the camping area and wait for the sunrise the next day. In the morning, most trekkers traverse their way to Kawasan Falls in Badian. Moreover, Bandera peak is surrounded with green scenery that offers a variety of plants, ferns, flowers and the like.
