Never Ending Game

Never ending game from detroit, mi.

Having broken out in 2018 with the release of their EP,  Welcome To The… , it was the 2019 full-length  Just Another Day  that really cemented the band into a force to be reckoned with. Stemming from there and 2021’s  Halo & Wings  EP,  Outcry  comes as  Never   Ending   Game ’s most ambitious record yet and one that will make a mark on hardcore for years to come.

Never Ending Game Vocalist Mikey Petroski on His Love for Detroit, Their New LP & More

By Carlos Ramirez | @noechonet | 4.19.2023

From where I'm sitting, it's clear that Never Ending Game has become one of the most popular hardcore bands going today. The Detroit outfit built its reputation via their  Welcome to the… EP (2018),  Just Another Day LP (2019) , and Halo & Wings EP (2021), plus breakout performances at festivals like Sound and Fury and Tied Down.

Next month, Never Ending Game will unleash Outcry , their highly anticipated sophomore album. The 11-song collection was produced, recorded, and mixed by Andy Nelson at Bricktop Recording and its riff parade pounds you over the head like a mallet.

Since Detroit is such a focal point to the Never Ending Game world, I spoke with vocalist Mikey Petroski about his upbringing there, how it informs everything he and the band does, and how he got into hardcore in the first place.

In the press release that went out about the album, you talked about the importance of Detroit and its influence on the band, both musically and otherwise. A lot has been said and written about the city’s struggles and renaissance throughout the years. How do you see things going there in the last few years?

Well, it’s been 10 years since the city filed for bankruptcy… there’s definitely a lot more nice stuff now than I ever remember in my lifetime. Like most cities, there’s been a lot of neighborhoods that got gentrified but there’s definitely more that remains untouched.

There’s kinda a divide from the new Detroit in the downtown area and the “real” Detroit outside of downtown. There’s still so many abandoned buildings and houses and areas that look like a bomb was dropped.

I’m pretty used to it but when I take people from out of town through here they still get pretty shook about how it looks. Overall, though, things are still trending up, I love it here. Adversity makes the best kind of people.

Are your family’s roots deeply rooted in the Detroit area? Many people I’ve meet through the years from there have some kind of connection to the auto industry, which speaks volumes about how important that is to that region of the country.

Yeah, my grandparents came from Poland to the USA and ended up in Detroit from hearing the auto industry was hiring. My Dad worked in the auto industry as well.

Come to think of it, most of my bandmates have family who work in it as well. I guess it’s just what people do here. [Laughs] It’s kinda like how in hardcore everyones a “graphic designer.”

When and how did you discover hardcore?

I got into it through punk. I was into classic rock and started getting into what I guess you’d call classic punk. Ramones, The Clash, etc. eventually got put onto Rancid and that became my favorite band and I got into everything like that, Fat Wreck, Epitaph bands, and stuff like that. I found out The Suicide Machines, who had a track on the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater  video game, were from my area.

I had thought that type of music didn’t really come from around here, so then I started paying attention and seeking out local bands. I made some friends in my neighborhood who were also into underground music and started going to anything we could ride our bikes to or get someone to drive us to. A lot of accessible shows for us had mixed bills, hardcore, emo, metalcore, screamo, ska, etc.

What are some of the local bands you remember seeing when you went to your earliest shows there?

Some bands we were seeing were Fordirelifesake, Suicide Machines, Fireworks, Razzle Dazzle, and xTyrantx... a bunch of others but most of the bands never became anything that made it out of here. But it also seemed like touring bands were regularly coming through so there was a show like every week it seemed.

Shoutout to the Static Age, the VFW on 9 and Mound, The Hayloft, Magic Stick, Refuge Skateshop, My Space Cafe… those were the spots I was going. If you know, you know.

So, after some time of going to all kinds of shows when I was like 16, I started really only fucking with hardcore shows and not much else. I wanna shoutout the band Face Reality , they were guys around my age who did a dope band and made me realize it was something I could do too.

Fortunately, Detroit has a rich history in hardcore and a lot of my peers made it a point to keep hardcore alive here, so finding it wasn’t hard.

never ending game tour

How did you come to meet the other members of Never Ending Game, and did you all discuss making your love for Detroit part of the band’s identity? It certainly comes through in almost every aspect of what the band does.

Denis (bass) is my childhood best friend. We grew up and got into hardcore together and were both in a band called Freedom when NEG came about. He sang in that band and I played bass so I thought it would be fun if we swapped positions for this group. The rest of us all met from playing shows together in our old bands.

I think we all first bonded over Detroit sports, to be honest. Especially all being Detroit Lions fans, there’s a special bond amongst us. There’s decades of pain and suffering so when you meet someone who is vocal about supporting the team it’s like you found a long lost sibling.

I think waving the Detroit flag started with the sports. But I’ve also always kinda felt Detroit is one of the most important cities to hardcore but doesn’t get the respect it deserves, so carrying the torch for Detroit hardcore and all those that came before us is something I take seriously.

Going into writing the material for Outcry , was there something that you wanted to do or say that you didn’t on the first album? Do you see it as a natural progression, or were you specifically aiming to do some different things?

For sure. The first album was really personal and dark for me, a lot of pent up feelings and emotions of things I’d been carrying everyday for years. Having some time to reflect on that record during the pandemic had me thinking about how if my life were to end, would that be what represents me? Are my friends and family gonna listen to that and feel good about the words I’m saying?

So, this album was written with that in the back of my mind. Sure, there’s still some dark personal shit on here.. But I tried to tie it up with a little more optimism.

I’m kinda not your typical outgoing hardcore screamer. I keep a close circle and don’t let too many people in. So putting words to the music is my only real representation in the scene. I take that seriously and am eternally grateful to my band for giving me that opportunity and for anyone who listens. After this release, I can say I feel good about what I’ve left behind.

If you had to pick one record (album or EP) that represents Detroit hardcore to the fullest extent, which would it be and why?

Well, I’m sure everyone already knows what I’m about to say. It’s Cold As Life's Born to Land Hard . That album is Detroit in the '90s captured in audio. It has the feeling I had looking out the window driving by urban decay and abandoned houses on the way to church as a kid.

It tells the stories you heard on the news every night. It captures the hopelessness that so many were feeling at that time. The opening track is my favorite hardcore song of all time:

I think the lore that surrounded the band sometimes overshadows the brilliance of that record. The lyrics, the song writing, the drums, the guitar playing and the constant feedback throughout. The absolutely insane album cover. It doesn’t get better than that.

You could get a room of the best musicians in the world and they wouldn’t come close to replicating that album. That’s a 1/1 record that could have only come from here.

Outcry  will be out May 12th and is available for pre-order now through Triple B Records .

Thick riffed hardcore beast is here: “Outcry” from NEVER ENDING GAME streaming in full

Detroit hardcore crew Never Ending Game just dropped their latest album, Outcry , via Triple B Records . This record captures the essence of their Motor City roots, drawing on influences and imagery from their hometown while delivering a raw mix of hopelessness and optimism.

Vocalist Mikey Petroski emphasizes the significance of Detroit in shaping the band’s sound and lyrics. From growing up surrounded by Motown’s song structures to the emotional resonance of Bob Seger’s tunes, Detroit’s musical legacy runs deep in their DNA. Acts like Negative Approach and Cold As Life paved the way for hardcore bands to be taken seriously in Detroit, fueling the band’s pride in representing their city.

Beyond the heartfelt sentiments, Never Ending Game’s songs on Outcry showcase their evolution. Breaking out in 2018 with their EP, Welcome To The…, and solidifying their presence with 2019’s Just Another Day, they have now pushed their sound to new heights. Combining hardcore with elements of traditional metal, the album boasts grand intros, infectious choruses, impressive guitar solos, and, of course, plenty of breakdowns.

With the release of two singles, “ Memories ” and “ Never Die ,” the band has given a taste of the specialness that defines Outcry. “ Memories ” immediately captivates, as Petroski’s gritty vocals amplify the reflective lyrics. Meanwhile, “ Never Die ” promises to be a pit favorite, featuring guest vocals by Justice Tripp of Trapped Under Ice , with Sam Trapkin handling the guitar composition. As the album unfolds, the hook-laden “ Tank On E ” lingers in the mind, while the furious and melodic closing track, “ Something Wrong ,” provides a powerful send-off.

Outcry stands as a testament to Never Ending Game’s ability to honor their roots while injecting old-school hardcore with a contemporary edge. It’s a memorable album that celebrates their Detroit origins and solidifies their place in the hardcore scene. Prepare for a headbanging journey through the Motor City, courtesy of Never Ending Game’s relentless energy and modern vision.

ALBUM REVIEW: Outcry – Never Ending Game

From the city that’s given us the legendary likes of NEGATIVE APPROACH and COLD AS LIFE , NEVER ENDING GAME have been proudly flying the flag for Detroit’s notoriously high-aggro brand of hardcore ever since the release of their 2018 break-out EP Welcome To The… . Doubling down in 2019 with their debut   full-length Just Another Day , and then again in 2021 with the Halo & Wings EP – both for the ever dependable Triple B Records – the quintet have built a considerable reputation for themselves over the past five years, and they’ve got plenty of eyes on them as they gear up to release their sophomore full-length Outcry .

With 11 tracks stretched across a reasonably fulsome 31 minutes, Outcry delivers first and foremost as expected. As the opening one-two of the title track and early single Never Die  is quick to establish, it majors most of all on massive, chugging riffs, earth-shattering breakdowns and big gang shouts backing up vocalist Mikey Petroski ’s gruff bark. On one level it’s not going to win any prizes for reinventing the wheel, but at the same time it’s delivered with such force and intensity, and with such a beefy production courtesy of Andy Nelson , that the band never struggle to knock the wind right out of you. This holds true for the entire record, with later tracks like Fire Of The Heart and Clown managing to hit just as hard as these early blows with ease.

Perhaps more importantly though, and as some may have an inkling of already, there is actually more going on here than heavy/metallic hardcore’s most standard tropes alone. Particularly with recent single Tank On E , the band hinted at more overtly melodic and even classic metal influences, with that track placed fifth overall here and providing a rousing highlight in the process. While not completely out of the blue when one considers a couple of cuts from some of their previous efforts, this relatively new string to their bow is used far more regularly here, finding its mark especially in the harmonised leads, pummelling double kicks and epic guitar solo of third track Down There (With You) , the slow melodic heft of Goin’ Thru Some Things , and the moody Cemetery Gates -isms of closer Something Wrong .

This expansion in sound serves NEVER ENDING GAME  really well on Outcry . It makes for a more varied and ultimately more interesting listen than 20-odd minutes of chugs and breakdowns alone, and crucially the band mostly do a good job of weaving these extra influences directly into the bruising hardcore sound they’ve had nailed since day one, rather than haphazardly jumping from one style to the next with each track. The aforementioned Goin’ Thru Some Things and the single Memories which immediately follows it are both brilliant examples, each boasting tight and punishing riffs and grooves that hit with all the more force thanks to the contrast provided by the more melodic elements which surround them.

To put the brakes on just a little though, no-one is saying that NEVER ENDING GAME are the first to do this. They may have pushed their sound out a bit here, but they’re still essentially operating in that tried and true middle ground between metal and hardcore that should probably be called metalcore but often isn’t due to the different connotations of that term. What is without question however is that Outcry is an absolute monster of a record. It’s definitely an evolution in sound for NEVER ENDING GAME as a band, one that delivers on the brute force and aggression that made them such a hot prospect already, while doing so with a little more nuance and variation that will only add to their enviable and hard-earned momentum.

Rating: 8/10

Never Ending Game drop new single, share music video

never ending game 2023

Official press release:

Today, Never Ending Game have dropped their new single and video "Tank on E." The melody-driven track sees the hardcore band embracing their rock and metal influences. It puts Mikey Petroski 's vocal chops on full display, offering a catchy chorus while still maintaining a rough around the edges sound driven by compelling guitar riffs. The video, filmed and directed by ReelLife Creative House, finds the band performing in different locations around Detroit and can be viewed below.

Vocalist Mikey Petroski shared the following:

Inspired by an overheard story of a guy who just got out of the pen trying to get their life on track. They realized that things aren't as different as they seem. The lyric "might need a lobotomy… just a little off the top" is a direct quote from the man himself. The guy's trying not to fall back into his old ways, and is begging for a little more time to make good on his second chance.

Never Ending Game's upcoming sophomore album, Outcry , set for release May 12th on Triple B Records . Outcry was produced, recorded, and mixed by Andy Nelson at Bricktop Recording and mastered by Brad Boatright at AudioSeige . The record builds off the band's life in Detroit - from lyrics to influences to imagery - while exuding a general feeling of hopelessness and optimism at the same time. Across the eleven songs on the album, the band take their sound to the next level, creating old school hardcore through a modern lens.

Having broken out in 2018 with the release of their EP, Welcome To The… , it was the 2019 full-length Just Another Day that really cemented the band into a force to be reckoned with. Stemming from there and 2021's Halo & Wings EP, Outcry comes as Never Ending Game's most ambitious record yet and one that will make a mark on hardcore for years to come.

The Beginner’s Guide to Bob Dylan’s Never Ending Tour

By Tyler Wilcox

Dylan on Letterman

Invisible Hits is a column in which Tyler Wilcox scours the internet for the best (and strangest) bootlegs, rarities, outtakes, and live clips.

Only a pandemic could bring Bob Dylan’s so-called Never Ending Tour to a halt. Since 1988, Dylan has travelled the world relentlessly, often playing upwards of 100 shows a year in clubs, theaters, arenas—even minor league baseball stadiums. This year looked no less busy for the legend, who turns 79 on May 24. He had a full slate of dates in Japan scheduled for spring and a coast-to-coast North American jaunt in the summer (not to mention the June 19 release of Rough and Rowdy Ways , his first album of original material since 2013). Of course, all of his shows have been cancelled. For the first time in decades, Dylan is off the road.

Perhaps now is a good time to explore the vast archives of Never Ending Tour live recordings. The closest we have to an official concert album from this era is 1994’s lukewarm MTV Unplugged LP; Dylan has only parceled out Never Ending Tour performances on various compilations. So, like so many other parts of his life and work, die-hards will need to seek out unofficial sources to get a fuller picture of what the man has been doing onstage for the past 32 years.

Where To Start

With 30+ years of Never Ending Tour bootlegs available, it’s tough to know where to start. Each era has at least something to recommend it; my advice is to head for the sweet spot of the late-1990s/early-2000s. During this time, Dylan recruited a backing band that stands among his best: guitarists Larry Campbell and Charlie Sexton, ex-Jerry Garcia Band drummer David Kemper, and mainstay bassist Tony Garnier. This combination of musicians could handle the breadth of the Dylan catalogue with grace, subtlety, and imagination. It’s no wonder Bob drafted the entire ensemble for his 2001 masterwork Love and Theft , the first time he’d brought a NET band into the studio.

The group’s prowess is on full display in a recently surfaced, crystal-clear tape from summer 2000 in Saratoga Springs, New York. The show crackles with energy, from the bluegrass stylings of the acoustic set to the electric bounce of “Country Pie.” Dylan clearly relishes his band’s intricate interplay and soulful backing vocals, responding with a warm, friendly performance (for Bob, at least). Check out the musical fireworks of their breakneck “Drifter’s Escape,” or the delightfully rambling “It Ain’t Me, Babe” towards the end of the show, with Dylan’s harmonica leading the group into a stirring half-time breakdown. This doesn’t sound like a bunch of timid backing musicians. This sounds like a band .

“It used to go like that, now it goes like this,” Dylan famously proclaimed during his controversial electric tours of the mid-’60s. It’s been his modus operandi ever since. For Dylan, the studio version of a song is only a sketch to be embellished and transformed onstage. During the Never Ending Tour, a common (and clichéd) complaint is that you might not recognize what tune you’re hearing until it’s halfway done. But these radical reinventions are thrilling more often than not, a chance to hear Dylan turn his songs inside out, twisting them into new shapes.

For example, take a listen to an intense 1988 arrangement of “ Gates of Eden ,” which had previously been relegated to acoustic sets. Here, Dylan’s band cranks the volume, encouraging a positively seething performance from their leader, which is matched by a series of vicious guitar solos from G.E. Smith (yes, of Saturday Night Live fame ). Or dig the smoky rendition of Time Out of Mind ’s “ Tryin’ to Get to Heaven ,” which features jazz-inflected chord progressions, a haunted Dylan vocal, and gorgeous guitar work. Even Dylan’s best-known works aren’t safe: Recent years’ setlists have included a slightly reggae take on “All Along the Watchtower” and a quizzical, bouncy “ Tangled Up in Blue .” Dylan is still finding new ways into his old material, keeping things interesting for both himself and his audience. The highlight of last fall’s North American jaunt was a hushed, spacey rendering of “Not Dark Yet” that could’ve been at home on OK Computer .

Weird One-Offs & Rarities

Never Ending Tour setlists have grown somewhat more rigid in recent years. But Dylanologists still wait with bated breath to find out which left-field song choices he’ll toss out from show to show. One night in Detroit in 1990, he opened with the first-ever live version of Blood on the Tracks ’ closer “Buckets of Rain” —and has never played it since. At Madison Square Garden in 2002, Bob decided to give the old Basement Tapes chestnut “Yea! Heavy and a Bottle Of Bread” its live debut . In London in 2003, the audience was treated to his first spin through “Romance in Durango” since 1976. A few years later in Spain, Dylan trotted out one of his deepest cuts, the awesomely goofy “ Handy Dandy ,” for its only onstage performance.

Surprise covers pop up occasionally, too. The crowd in Clarkston, Michigan, in 2013 heard a stirring version of Dylan’s then-tourmate Richard Thompson’s “ 52 Vincent Black Lightning .” A few weeks after his comrade Tom Petty died in 2016, Bob paid tribute with a yearning “ Learning to Fly .” And in 2018, he crooned his way through “Moon River” in Savannah, Georgia, the birthplace of the song’s lyricist, Johnny Mercer. It’s impossible to predict when and where these rarities will emerge—but being there when they do is a Bobcat’s dream come true.

Guest Stars Galore

An idiosyncratic vocalist to say the least, Dylan is not the easiest duet partner. But throughout the Never Ending Tour, musicians have found it hard to resist the invitation. Dylan and Van Morrison have locked horns on several occasions, attempting to out-growl each other on Morrison’s “One Irish Rover” or Dylan and the Band’s “ I Shall Be Released” (the latter also featuring Joni Mitchell). Jack White hopped onstage in Detroit in 2004 to perform a rambunctious version of the White Stripes’ “ Ball and Biscuit .” Sheryl Crow was an encore regular for awhile: Here she is in 1997 adding her pipes and accordion to “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.” One of Dylan’s stranger and more successful partnerships came in 1995, when he and Patti Smith dueted on a quietly breathtaking “Dark Eyes” in New York City, rescuing the song from Bob’s mid-’80s flop Empire Burlesque . The pair’s harmonies may not be pitch-perfect, but the chemistry between them is as good as it gets.

Of course, some of Bob’s guests prefer to remain in an instrumental role. Way back at the beginning of the Never Ending Tour in 1988, Neil Young sat in with Dylan’s band for a series of Northern California shows, adding his unmistakably piercing guitar to the proceedings. This brief Young-Dylan summit was a high-energy, no-nonsense affair—and extremely fun. Just listen to Bob almost cracking up on a ragged ride through the old rockabilly chestnut “Everybody’s Movin’” during the encore.

Whether Dylan is on or off the road, his legacy will continue to be spoken of in reverent tones, but the Never Ending Tour has shown time and time again that his art isn’t a museum piece just yet. “It’s alive every night,” was how Dylan described it in 2006. These NET tapes prove him right.

'You can't fake that fire': What fueled Kevin Durant's incredible return to the game

Kevin Durant fades away for the tough Phoenix basket in the second quarter. (0:30)

never ending game tour

KEVIN DURANT HEARD the pop in his right leg over the roar of nearly 20,000 fans inside Scotiabank Arena in Toronto. Then he collapsed to the floor, holding his leg, pinching his heel.

It was the second quarter of Game 5 of the 2019 NBA Finals. As Durant sat there, a member of the Golden State Warriors , memories from his basketball career flashed before his eyes. Fearing the end of his career, or one that seemed recognizable, he gazed around the court and into the crowd, trying to soak up a final moment.

When he was helped to the locker room, Durant's foot didn't feel fully attached. Then, a doctor performed what's known as a Thompson Test to determine the integrity of the Achilles tendon, an essential band of tissue that helps connect calf muscles to the heel. Patients lie face down, with their feet hanging off the edge of a table or a bed, and a doctor squeezes the calf to see if the foot moves. If it doesn't, then that tendon is likely torn.

Inside the room, the doctor squeezed Durant's right calf -- nothing moved. The doctor looked around at other specialists, at nearby Warriors officials who looked on. The room fell silent. Doubt soon crept in. "This is career-ending, I'm done ," Durant recalled thinking. Even if he came back, maybe he'd only average 15 points a game, maybe a few more -- maybe.

"That's what I was thinking," he told ESPN, "because that's all I was hearing, that this s--- is over ."

The events of five years ago still serve as a flashbulb memory for Durant. He remembers them vividly.

What followed in the weeks, months and years ahead -- a series of tedious milestones, starting with learning to walk again, learning to run again, learning to jump again -- represent an unheralded aspect of Durant's Hall of Fame career: an unrelenting burn to return not just to the player he was, but to one more efficient and effective than before. Each milestone felt momentous and hard-won, and this season, Durant reached another, when he played 75 regular-season games, his first time playing that many since 2018-19.

Now, in his second season with the Phoenix Suns , down 2-0 in the first round of the playoffs to the Minnesota Timberwolves , Durant will be called upon to help save a teetering season, with Game 3 coming Friday night in Phoenix (10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN).

SUNS OWNER MAT ISHBIA went all-in for Durant in February 2023, sending Mikal Bridges , Cam Johnson , four first-round draft picks and a 2028 first-round pick swap to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for the star swingman. Then, a few months later, the Suns dealt for star guard Bradley Beal .

With their new Big Three of Durant, Beal and star shooting guard Devin Booker , the Suns seemed poised for championship contention, but injuries and uneven play have interfered. Through it all, Durant has been the constant, averaging 27.1 points in 37.2 minutes this season, during which he made his 14th NBA All-Star appearance.

Sitting inside the Target Center in Minneapolis, Durant folded his 6-foot-11 frame into a chair and discussed this latest milestone on his journey. The stands were empty, practice had ended and most of his Suns teammates had departed back to the team hotel.

He had worked so hard to get back, he had felt like his old self by the 2021 playoffs, he said. But then a series of nagging injuries -- slipping on the court, or players falling into him -- kept him sidelined.

"I felt like I would've played 75 games the past two years, to be honest," Durant said.

As he spoke, he offered a window into an aspect of him that those around Durant describe as rare, if not wholly unique: an obsession and love for the game so intense that they alone carried him through the darkness of an injury that had robbed him of so many weeks, months, years.

"There are very few who love the game as much as KD," Suns general manager James Jones told ESPN. "You don't play this long and that well unless you love it. You can't fake that fire."

Jones paused. "That's what I want to say," he reiterated. "You can't fake that fire."

Back inside the increasingly quiet Target Center, Durant continued to reflect.

He was 30 when his Achilles ruptured, well in his prime. He is now 35, in the winter of his career with a couple wisps of gray dotting his goatee. During Game 1 of this first-round series against Minnesota, 22-year-old Timberwolves superstar Anthony Edwards barked at Durant after sinking a series of jumpers over him, and social media accounts tracking their exchange alleged that, among other things, Edwards called Durant "old." By NBA standards, a literally fair assessment. After all, Durant was drafted and played for a team that no longer exists: the Seattle Supersonics.

Durant looked out at the court.

"It was a long process, man," he said.

ANDY BARR WAS living in Los Angeles in the fall of 2019 when he received the call.

Durant had undergone surgery to repair his Achilles tendon almost immediately after it snapped. And a couple of months after that, the Nets, whom Durant had joined that summer, asked Barr to start working with Durant.

By then, in 2019, Barr served as a physiotherapist to help professional athletes recover from injury. It was a subject he knew well; a major knee injury derailed his own career as a professional soccer player in England. After that, he shifted his focus toward helping players, first in soccer -- including for Manchester City -- and later joining the New York Knicks , where he worked for six years as a director of performance and rehabilitation from 2009 to 2015.

Barr had worked with players across all sports who had suffered catastrophic injuries, including rupturing an Achilles tendon, and he knew how challenging, both physically and mentally, it could be to recover.

After all, Achilles tears have long cleaved professional sporting careers -- from what a player was, to what the injury reduced them to, the gap often hauntingly wide.

Because of that dynamic, Barr said that much of his job during the rehabilitation process surrounds managing those anxieties: What if I don't heal right? What if I'm never the same? What if I'm never good again? What if my career is over? What else am I going to do with my life?

Those nagging questions can hinder a player's progress through the mind-numbing days of rehabilitation, repeatedly performing menial exercises, rebuilding strength toward a return date that might never exist.

"It's tough," Barr told ESPN. "You've really got to be there for them during that process."

DURANT IMMEDIATELY STRUCK Barr as being different.

"It was incredible," Barr said. "From day one, he was just ultimately focused and determined to get back."

But it was far from easy -- or immediate.

"I don't want to say I was depressed, because depression is its own thing, but whatever is under depression," Durant said. "There was something mentally that was going on. That's a dark place. We all think we're these god-like beings. I couldn't tell the future. I didn't know what the f--- was next. I didn't know how I was going to look or feel or play."

He thought of Kobe.

"When Kobe went through his, I just thought, 'There's no f---ing way that Superman tore his Achilles," Durant said. "You never think it could happen to players like Kobe Bryant or even to me. It's just such a career-ending injury."

Durant relied on Barr and other specialists to put his racing mind at ease.

For four years, the two worked together, with Barr, whom the Nets hired as a consulting physiotherapist, taking a red-eye flight from Los Angeles to New York almost every week -- leaving on a Sunday night and returning to L.A. on Fridays. Depending on the team schedule, they'd work together nine-to-five on some days but 9 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on others.

Durant never missed a day.

"Nothing was ever like, 'I'm going to bulls--- around,'" Barr said. "He just goes out there with pure purpose."

"My whole being has been committed to playing basketball. I didn't think it was time yet. It's that simple," Durant said. "And when I'm that committed to something, I didn't even think about anything else but, like, when are we starting recovery? As soon as it happened, everybody wanted to cry with me. I did that for a second, crying, because everybody else was crying, and then I'm like, 'When are we doing surgery? When can I start my recovery process?' And that's how it was, man. I'm ready to get back, quick."

It was refreshing, Barr said, if unusual, especially for a player of that caliber. He had worked with some players, even stars, and he had to convince them to do certain exercises, to show effort, to care. And Barr would think to himself, "Why the hell do I have to convince you to do something to get better?" But he would explain something to Durant, and Durant would respond, almost robotically: "OK, how many sets and repetitions?" Then, he'd execute them.

"He's so self-motivated," Barr said. "It was amazing. He just makes my job so easy."

They talked about life beyond basketball. "He was teaching me about his world," Durant said. "I was teaching him about the mentality of basketball players." The goal was to help Durant return to his former state but also become more purposeful with how he moved.

It was an education.

"I was working with the [resistance] bands," Durant said, crouching down as if they were still placed on the outside of his legs, "and the first thing I was doing movement-wise, I would jump off a box, get into a stance with bands on. Like, what the f---? Like, truly, tell me what this means? Every time we were doing something, I'd be like, 'Am I doing this right?'"

Barr would explain how that movement was the beginning of a full-body effort to slide; they were just breaking it down to build it back up.

"An Achilles injury is like a double-edged sword," Durant said, "because you can learn so much about who you are, your body, how it works, because that's a major, major ligament."

Throughout the years, Barr would often watch Durant and wonder why he was putting in that level of effort. Why did he care so much? "He had already done everything," Barr said. A multiple-time NBA scoring champion. An NBA MVP. A two-time NBA champion. A two-time Finals MVP. A six-time All-NBA first-team member. Countless NBA All-Star appearances. Multiple Olympic gold medals.

"He's committed to constantly developing himself," Barr said. "He's not bothered by anyone else. It's, How can I get better every single day? And he'll do that until he can't do it anymore. He'll do that until he's 90."

Barr came to that realization watching Durant on a daily basis.

"You've got players who play until they get rich, then they can take their foot off the gas," Barr said. "Then you've got players who love playing and the money is a reward for them loving it. He just loves the game. He's obsessed with it. And there's not too many players like that. They may like it, they may be good at it, but he loves it."

This is the most common refrain around the Suns when asked about Durant and his long road back.

"He's one of the all-time gamers," Suns coach Frank Vogel told ESPN. "He's someone who always wants to be in there."

Said Jones, "He's made a concerted effort to play every game. He just attacks every day with the intention of playing. That's lost on guys. That's what people forget about the greats -- is that basketball is their life. Every day, he's doing something to push himself."

Durant led them with a team-high 31 in their Game 1 loss to Minnesota on Saturday. During a third-quarter run in which Durant drained several midrange jumpers in a row, Edwards, the Timberwolves star, found himself watching his favorite player in awe. "I became a fan at one point," Edwards said after his team's win. "I was out there like, 'Goddamn, he nice.'"

STANDING AGAINST THE stanchion at the Suns' practice facility, Durant said it was not simply his love for the game that fueled his return. For him, it felt far more existential.

"I think all these guys love it," he said. "It just feels like life or death for me since day one growing up. If I wasn't doing this, what the f--- else am I doing? Until the wheels fall off. I can't just not be the best basketball player that I can be every day. That's been the mentality in my head since I was 8 years old.

"I had no other choice but to go back to work. I wasn't going to go back and be like, 'Mom, Dad, Bro, Sis, Godfather -- all my whole family that has been trusting in me and believing in me that I'm living for and I'm pushing this family name for every day -- [and say] 'I'm done, I tore my Achilles.' Like, what the f--- you mean? You're done? You can't be done."

For years, Durant maintained a list of milestones. "Early in the process, it was learning to walk on two feet again," he said. Walking, then jogging, then running, then shooting jumpers going right, when he'd jump off that leg.

But he also had to be patient. He started walking in a pool once and felt soreness in his Achilles the next day; it was time to slow down.

"It's a tedious process, man, where you have to really, really monitor your body every ... single ... day ," Durant said." And every moment matters, every second matters when you're trying to recover from that injury."

When he made his debut for the Nets in a December 2020 preseason game, his first outing since the Achilles injury, a span of 552 days had passed. One minute into the game, he drove down the lane and dunked. He finished with 15 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists in nearly 24 minutes. It was, by any measure, a resounding success, but Durant still carried so many questions.

"How am I going to feel in a regular-season game? How am I going to feel in a high-pressure fourth-quarter game? And then, how am I going to feel in a playoff game -- in a Game 6, a Game 7?"

"I was just setting milestones as I go," he said, "and never feeling satisfied with where I was at the time and just wanting to experience more and putting more stress on my Achilles, so I can say, all right, I'm finally back now."

That feeling -- that long-awaited return -- arrived just six months later, when the Nets faced the Milwaukee Bucks in the second round of the 2021 playoffs. Durant averaged 35.4 points across nearly 43 minutes in the riveting seven-game series, which the Bucks won despite a 48-point effort from Durant in Game 7.

After that series, Durant told himself, "OK, this is who I am."

He was finally back.

Setbacks still limited him, but there was nothing lingering from the Achilles; that was behind him.

Perhaps the most striking part of Durant's rebound and durability this season -- after everything that preceded it -- is that his durability was arguably the biggest question mark around Durant before he entered the NBA. Durant was famously criticized after not being able to bench-press 185 pounds at the pre-draft combine in 2007. He was criticized for having a string-bean build. The game plan, as he's come to know too well, was to play physically against him.

"That's the scouting report -- to be as physical as you can," Durant said. "You're running into four to five players on every possession since I was 22, 23 years old, so I've built up a callus to get hit, a callus to get elbowed and hop back up."

Just then, an odd connection revealed itself. The biggest criticism of Durant would prove, he explained, to be a huge benefit for him.

"Being played physical my whole career," he explained, "kind of helped me bounce back and be able to take some of these injuries that I've had."

As he talked, Durant leaned forward and tapped parts of his body, pointing out where repeated blows have helped him develop his own personal sort of armor. Then, one of the NBA's all-time gamers leaned back, pleased but never satisfied.

LOS ANGELES — With all the Lakers have been through this season – especially against the Denver Nuggets – a nervous excitement permeated throughout Crypto.com Arena for Game 4 of their first-round playoff series on Saturday night.

Because Game 4 started similarly to the series’ previous three games, all of which the Nuggets had rallied to win to give themselves an opportunity to sweep the Lakers out of the playoffs for the second consecutive season.

But the Lakers, led by strong performances from LeBron James (30 points), Anthony Davis (25 points, 23 rebounds, six assists) and D’Angelo Russell (21 points) finally cracked the Nuggets’ mastery of this rivalry, staving off another Denver comeback attempt in a 119-108 victory that extends their season.

The Lakers’ victory ended their losing streak to the Nuggets at 11 games, with their previous victory against Denver (including seven postseason games) coming on Dec. 16, 2022, and was a performance more worthy of a team that rolled into the postseason with 12 wins in 15 games.

Game 5 of the best-of-seven series is Monday night in Denver.

“Beautiful day to be alive in order to stay alive,” Coach Darvin Ham said. “That was the message [Friday] and the message [Saturday]. Just win one game. And we’ve got to re-focus, re-calibrate and have that same mindset going up to Denver.”

Trailing by as much as 19 points midway through the fourth quarter (106-87) after a Russell pull-up 3-pointer, the Nuggets kept trying to muster another comeback.

A 6-0 Denver run cut the Lakers’ lead to 13 with a little over four minutes left. The Nuggets kept cutting into the lead, trimming the deficit to seven multiple times.

But the 39-year-old James, who scored 14 of his points in the fourth quarter on 6-for-8 shooting, helped make sure the Lakers weren’t going to be swept by the Nuggets again, carrying the team late in his 21st NBA season.

He scored six straight Laker points to give them a 113-103 lead with 1:31 left.

“We found a way to score and get stops and then at some point we stopped getting good looks, stopped putting the ball in the hole, and then they find a way within their system to continue to be efficient and get good quality shots,” Russell said. “For us, that’s something we struggle with. For us to focus on it this game to continue to get good shots, to continue to push the pace, it’s something that happens, keep going, next play mentality. We kept the pace in the game up and it played in our favor.”

Austin Reaves (21 points on 7-for-15 shooting to go with six assists) scored the Lakers’ last six points, including making four free throws in the last 43 seconds with the Nuggets intentionally fouling, to help seal the victory.

Russell bounced back from going scoreless in the Game 3 loss , shooting 8 for 15 from the field on Saturday after missing all seven of his shots on Thursday.

“Trying to be as humble as I can, I’ve been through it all before and I kinda prepared myself mentally before I go through it again,” Russell said. “I prepared for this all summer, all season. I tried to prepare myself for these times now when everyone is watching, everyone has something to say. I try to stay to myself and to my own opinions and emotions.”

The Lakers, who never trailed, dominated the interior with 72 points in the paint and held the Nuggets to nine offensive rebounds and five second-chance points, which had been an area of weakness for most of the series.

Davis (20 defensive rebounds) grabbed more than half of the Lakers’ defensive boards and had half of their total rebounds (46), matching his career playoff high.

“And for A.D. to clean glass – 20 of them on the defensive end – it’s just key for our offense,” James said. “It’s just key for a lot of things that we want to do and I think A.D. doesn’t have to prove anything to anybody. He’s one of the best bigs we have in the game, one of the best bigs in the world. And he’s showing that again through the first four games.”

The Lakers had 44 points in the paint during the first half alone on their way to a 61-48 halftime lead, their fourth halftime advantage of the series.

“The paint (defense) was a joke,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone said. “Every huddle, I sounded like a broken record tonight. Every huddle was, ‘Paint, paint, paint.’ (In) Game 3, they had 70 and we found a way to win. Tonight, they had 72. That’s an incredible number. … I just didn’t think we had the requisite physicality or urgency. This did not seem like a closeout game.”

The Nuggets won the third quarter for the fourth consecutive game, but only by a two-point margin (32-30), their slimmest third-quarter margin of the series so far, allowing the Lakers to take a 91-80 lead into the fourth – a lead they didn’t relinquish in the fourth.

“You kind of get that monkey off your back,” Davis said. “The difference in the first three games, and actually all the games that we have lost to them in a row and [Saturday] is that we just scored in the second half: 30 in the third and 28 and fourth.

“Usually, we’re in the low 20s or even high teens and they’re scoring big. So a team like that, they’re gonna continue to score and we just have to continue to score as well. That was the difference.”

Nikola Jokic finished with 33 points, 14 rebounds and 14 rebounds for his second triple-double of the series and the 18th of his postseason career.

Michael Porter Jr., who answered most of the Lakers’ runs with big shot after big shot, had 27 points on 10-for-20 shooting to go with 11 rebounds. Jamal Murray’s shooting struggles continued, with the guard scoring 22 points on 9-for-23 shooting.

The Nuggets also lost a closeout game in last season’s first round while up 3-0 on Minnesota, but Denver won that series in five games and lost only three more times on the way to its first NBA championship, including a sweep of the Lakers in the Western Conference finals.

“The only opportunity for us is just to play the next game,” James said. “And we’ve given ourselves another life. We’ve given ourselves another lifeline and it’s a one-game series for us.

“Monday’s game is the most important game of the season for us and we understand that and we know that so it’s that stage where you lose, you’re done. You win and you keep going. So, it’s not much to talk about.”

Reaves agreed.

“We get another opportunity to go play one more game, and if we win, come back and play another one and keep moving from there,” Reaves said. “Odds aren’t stacked in our favor, but anytime we can keep ourselves floating above water and give ourselves an opportunity to do something special, we’re up for the challenge.”

More in Lakers

The odds remain steep against the defending champs, but Saturday night’s victory fooled those (including a certain columnist) who didn’t see this series going back to Denver.

Lakers | Alexander: Yes, the Lakers are still alive after Game 4 win against Nuggets

Wood had left knee surgery last month and hasn’t played since the All-Star break, sidelined with what the team officially deemed “left knee effusion” (swelling) for a month before the procedure.

Lakers | Lakers’ Christian Wood available but doesn’t play in Game 4 win against Nuggets

Ahead of a do-or-die Game 4, the Lakers’ priority was film study: trying to figure out what needs to happen for them so Saturday night doesn’t go the same way the previous three games have gone.

Lakers | Lakers hoping they can flip the script, avoid being swept by Nuggets again

Given what’s happened in not only the last three meetings but the last 11, their series with the Nuggets figures to end Saturday night.

Bears pull off NFL Draft surprise by taking punter Tory Taylor, and Caleb Williams already has message for him

You almost never see a punter selected this early.

tory-taylor-g.jpg

It's not very often that you see a punter selected with one of the first 125 picks of the NFL Draft , but that's exactly what happened on Saturday when the Chicago Bears decided to take Iowa's Tory Taylor in the fourth round.

Taylor wasn't just the first punter off the board, he was also the first specialist taken. Taylor was selected with the 122nd overall pick, which makes him just the second punter over the past 10 years to be taken in the top 125. The only punter selected higher was Mitch Wishnowsky , who was taken by the San Francisco 49ers with the 110th overall pick in 2019.

Like Wishnowsky, Taylor is an Australian punter who took college football by storm during his career at Iowa. With the Hawkeyes offense struggling for most of his tenure at the school, Taylor became a huge weapon for the team, especially during a 2023 season that ended with him winning the Ray Guy Award.

Not only was Taylor easily the best punter in college football last season -- he was a unanimous All-American -- but he was also one of the best punters in NCAA history. During the 2023 season, Taylor totaled 4,479 punting yards, which broke an NCAA single-season record that had stood for 85 years. He ended up averaging 48.2 yards per punt last season, which also broke a single-season record. Over the course of his four-year career, he averaged 46.3 yards per punt, which was, yup, another NCAA record.

Taylor might have been the only college punter who had his own highlight video in 2023.

Someone is gonna get a weapon in Tory Taylor, I hope whatever fan base gets him treats him like royalty! Vid cred: Hawk Tok On TikTok pic.twitter.com/XAd4ud9lDc — CCHawkeye (@Seth_William11) April 27, 2024

The only knock on Taylor is his age. He's already 26 and he'll be 27 before the start of the 2024 season, but since it's easy for a successful punter to put together a long career, the Bears likely weren't fazed by that one issue.

The Bears were in need of a punter because they had some serious issues with the position in 2023. Last season, Trenton Gill had a net average of just 38 yards per punt, which ranked dead last in the NFL out of any player that had at least five punts.

Although Taylor was utilized a lot at Iowa, Caleb Williams isn't planning for Taylor to see much action in Chicago. He had a message for his new teammate on Saturday.

"Hey, you're not going to punt too much this year," Williams wrote Taylor in a text after the punter was drafted, via The Athletic .

The need at punter was so big for the Bears that they decided to use their final pick of the day on Taylor. That's right, the Bears' 2024 draft is already over. The Bears only had four picks in the draft this year and assuming they don't make any trades on Saturday, Taylor will go down as their final pick of 2024 to complete a draft class that includes Williams, Rome Odunze and offensive tackle Kiran Amegadjie.
