Berber Jewelry, The Art of Moroccan Silver

Morocco Travel Blog

Morocco is known for its artisans and the art of the jeweler or silversmith is one of many crafts practiced today. During your trip to Morocco you can watch artisans at work, marvel at the workmanship and detail of pieces in the jewelry souks and even negotiate the purchase of a unique piece. Many items of jewelry are appealing for their aesthetic value, but all pieces – whether new fabrications or antique treasures – draw on a fascinating history and symbolism.

Berbers traditionally wore silver and still do today although gold has become increasingly popular, especially in urban areas, due to its higher value. This probably was due to its availability: Morocco is a top 20 global silver producer and mines have been in use in the Souss-Massa- Draa region since the 1st century AD. Due to this resource, the town of Tiznit has grown as a major center of silver production and sales. The arrival of Islam in Morocco in the 7th century added a religious justification to the preference for silver, as certain texts of the Quran forbid the wearing of gold jewelry .

Jewish Woman, Silver Jewelry

Morocco has for many centuries been a melting pot of cultures and trading routes and as a result, many techniques were imported alongside materials or came with immigrant groups. Jews (coming from the Middle East during early migrations or later from Al-Andalus) were masters of the silversmithing techniques and passed their knowledge to their Berber neighbours and colleagues.

In many places, such as the Mellah (Jewish quarter) of Marrakech or the village of Amezrou near Zagora , it is possible to visit craftsmen who still practice these methods of casting, piercing and enameling today, although the Jewish craftsmen are long gone. In Essaouira and in Fes, you will spot modern filigree work typical of the Jewish jewelers of a bygone era.

Berber women often receive elaborate silver jewelry from their husbands at the time of marriage. This ensures that she has her own wealth in the event of hardship or of becoming widowed. Traditionally, these pieces are worn at the wedding and include headdresses, earrings, necklaces, bangles, bracelets and rings.

Berber Silver Tasfift

One of the headdresses worn by all Berber women at weddings is called a Tasfift and is essentially an ornate headpiece adorned with silver or nickel coins featuring King Mohammed V or Hassan II. It has  a rooster or chicken featured on the tip of the head to promote fertility of the new bride.

The pieces worn by Berber women at weddings  often feature beads of coral, amber or semi-precious stones plus cast coins and linked chains. Shapes and forms include those which are intended to ward off evil or geometric shapes reflecting both the Islamic tradition and Berber symbology. Many families sadly no longer have these heirlooms and in modern cities has become common to hire costume jewelry for the wedding day. It is possible to see examples of traditional Berber jewelry in the excellent Museums of Berber culture in Agadir and at the Majorelle Gardens, Berber Museum, in Marrakech.

A typical silver piece is the ‘fibula’. These are still made today and make unusual gifts as brooches. In fact, although decorative, the fibula has a very practical application in that it is used to join or fasten fabrics such as cloaks. It usually consists of either a singular triangle with a pin for fastening, or two such sections connected by a chain. The fibula design came to Morocco with the Romans and is essentially an early form of the safety pin. However, Berber craftsmen brought this useful item to a whole new level of aesthetics and symbolism. The triangular shape is said to represent woman (and fertility) and the tent (and therefore home or family).

During your visit to Morocco, you will see the Hand of Fatima or ‘khamsa’ represented everywhere from door knockers to decorations to jewlery. Common to the Islamic and Jewish faiths, it is believed to ward off evil or jealousy. The hand – with its five digits – is intrinsically linked to symbols of other faiths and cultures such as the five-pointed star or the pentagram. Modern and older khamsa pendants are available in souks all over Morocco.

Another common form is the ‘agadez’ or southern cross. These pendants are traditionally native to the Touareg tribes of the desert and are available across Morocco. There are said to be at least 21 variations on the central theme of an elaborate cross, each representing a tribe or homeland. Agadez crosses are made in the traditional way using a lost wax technique. Silver is melted on coal embers, and poured into a wax mold, placed in a mold of clay. Inserts of wood, glass or semi-precious stones, are sometimes added. It is said that these items are used for navigation in the desert, with the central cross denoting the four compass points.

The traditions and designs related to Berber jewlery are sure to give any visitor to Morocco a great insight into local culture… As well as making a great gift or souvenir purchase!

Best time to visit morocco.

The climate in Morocco varies wildly according to the season and area of travel. In the lowlands, the cooler months from October to April are popular among visitors. This time of year is pleasantly warm to hot (around 30°C) during the day and cool to cold (around 15°C) at night. Winter in the higher regions often brings snow and can therefore get seriously cold, particularly at night. Tourists flock to the coastline from June to September for fun in the sun, with warm mostly rain-free days. Further inland it can get hot and rain is rare, which makes the best times to travel March to June and September to December. As a Muslim country, Morocco observes Ramadan. If you are planning to go on holiday in Morocco during Ramadan, it is important to consider that many restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating at reduced hours during this time.

Culture and customs

Morocco's culture has developed over centuries of influence from far and wide. Contemporary Morocco is a fascinating mix of Berber, Mediterranean, Andalucian and African traditions, which are present in the cuisine, clothing, music, language, customs and lifestyle. As an Islamic country, most Moroccans are Muslim; however, there are small populations of people who practice Judaism and Christianity. Classic examples of Islamic architecture can be observed all throughout the country and tenets of the Islamic religion are carried out in the customs and lives of the people. The 'Call to Prayer' can be heard five times a day, women are expected to dress modestly and alcohol isn't drunk by most of the population.

Most of Moroccan society can be considered traditional, with respect for elders, connection to family and giving alms to the poor hallmarks of everyday life for many Moroccans. Hospitality is another important element of society, with warmly welcoming people into your home a time-honoured tradition and social responsibility that dates back centuries.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Believe the hype - Moroccan food is legendary.

Things to try in Morocco

These slow-cooked stews are synonymous with Moroccan cooking. Chicken, olive and citrus are a well-known favourites, but there are endless variations using different meats, vegetables and seasonings.

2. Couscous

Forget instant cous cous and try the real deal in Morocco. Often served with vegetables and meat, regional varieties sometimes also include everything from sweet raisins to spicy harissa or smoky almonds.

3. Fresh fruit

Morocco has an amazing array of fruit available in the markets, shops and juice bars. Choose from bananas, mangoes, oranges, avocados or peaches - eat fresh or get them whipped up in a juice.

4. Mint tea

While travelling through Morocco you'll probably drink more sweet mint tea than ever before. Offered as a gesture of hospitality when visiting someone's home or shop, it's considered impolite to refuse, so accept graciously.

Geography and environment

Located in North Africa, Morocco has the best of many worlds within its boundaries. From the sun-drenched beaches of the coast to the sands of the mighty Sahara and the snowy peaks of the High Atlas and Rif Mountains, Morocco has great variety in its landscapes and terrain. This combination of desert, woodlands, forest, mountain steppe and grasslands ensures a wide diversity of flora and fauna lives within the country.

History and government

Early history.

The land now known as Morocco has been inhabited for centuries, with Moroccan civilisation being known for its richness in history and culture. Centuries of foreign trade, invasion and dynastic rule have given Morocco many different cultural influences that are evident in today's society. From the Phoenicians who entered Morocco via the Mediterranean in the 6th century BC, to the Roman influence of 40 AD and the formation of Islamic Morocco in the years after, Morocco has evolved with the rise and fall of dynasties, formation and dissolution of empires and the birth of new governments, movements and ways of living. Reaching its height under the Berber Dynasties of the 11th and 12th centuries (the Almoravids, Almohads, Marinids and Wattasids), Morocco subsequently fell to Arab tribes in 1559. The current royal family are descendants of the Alaouite Dynasty who have largely ruled since the 1600s, despite enduring a few crises in the 18th and 19th centuries, mainly in relation to European influence in the area and surrounding countries.

Recent history

With the signing of the Treaty of Fez, Morocco was declared a protectorate of France in 1912 with Spain being allocated control of parts of Morocco, mainly in the north and south. European control was generally opposed by Moroccan citizens, with the people of Rif attempting to establish a separatist republic in 1921. Decades of opposition continued, with rioting and protests leading to increased political tension. In 1955, the road to Moroccan independence was paved by Mohammed V who negotiated reforms and the restoration of independence. By 1956, France had relinquished its protectorate of Morocco and in 1957, Mohammed V became king. In 1961, Hassan II assumed the title of King of Morocco and continued to rule until his death in 1999. His son, Mohammed VI, took over the mantle of king in 1999 and continues to rule today.

Top places to see in Morocco

Things just happen in Marrakech. One moment you're sitting down to a camel burger, the next you're chatting with a snake charmer. The labyrinthine markets are the perfect place to lose yourself but find a Moroccan memento or three.

2. Sahara Desert

The endless dunes of the Sahara will call to your inner explorer. Jump on a camel and start riding out over the sandy waves. At sunset, the desert glows rich and red and at night the stars turn the sky crystal.

The desert is calling! Add a 3 day Sahara Mini Adventure to your Morocco trip itinerary.

3. Essaouira

The name 'Essaouira' means image, appropriate since its charm is undeniable. Within the stone ramparts, you'll find art galleries, wood workshops and whitewashed houses with bright blue shutters. Portuguese, British and Jewish influences all mingle in this artist's town.

Explore this windswept coastal city on our 11 day Premium Morocco Highlights with Essaouira trip, or make it a quick journey on our Five Days in Morocco tour.

5. High Atlas Mountains

The mountains are best explored at the ground level by foot or bicycle. Travel through Amazigh villages, up along crop terraces, down through lush valleys and past orchards, goats and Moroccan rural life. The seriously fit can tackle Mount Toubkal for incredible views.

Join a 7 day Mount Toubkal Trek or a Mount Toubkal Long Weekend Trek for those short on time.

6. Todra Gorge

This is a rock climber's heaven or the ideal place for beginners to get a taste. It's a tight squeeze in some places but a sparkling river, the odd palmeraie, Berber villages and high cliff walls make it worth breathing in for.

7. Moulay Idriss

The small Medina of ancient Moulay Idriss was once forbidden to non-Muslims. Now it is a pleasure to explore as the faithful gather to pay homage to the founding father of Islam in Morocco at the 8th-century mausoleum.

8. Ait Benhaddou

Perfectly preserved, this is one of Morocco's most picturesque kasbahs. Centuries ago it was a stop for caravans as they carried salt across the Sahara. Today, it is inhabited only by a handful of families and the odd film crew.

Visit Ait Benhaddou on our 8 day Classic Morocco tour .

9. Casablanca

The very name conjures up images of war-time romance. But the real romance of Casablanca must be its French influences and the beautiful Hassan II mosque, the largest in Morocco.

Here's lookin' at you kid! Spend some time in this famous city on our 15 day Best of Morocco tour .

10. Volubilis

Do some time travel and visit the ancient hilltop city of Volubilis, one of the Roman Empire's most remote bases. The ruins here are beautifully preserved and it's easy to believe you've stepped into the 2nd or 3rd century.

12. Chefchaouen

You might recognise this city from the famous photos of its bright blue buildings. S et against a wide valley and tucked between two peaks in the Rif Mountains, much of Chefchaouen was recreated by Andalusian refugees escaping the Reconquista, so it might remind you of the hills of Spain.

Get a chance to wander around this striking blue city on our 18 day Morocco Encompassed tour .

13. Tangier

T he coastal town of Tangier is the gateway between the Mediterranean and Africa. Enjoy fresh seafood by the port, watch the sunset over the Atlantic or visit the Caves of Hercules.

Morocco has one of the oldest retail cultures in the world. From bargaining in age-old souqs to swiping your credit card at a modern gallery, it's all possible in Morocco. But to experience brilliant bargains, exciting finds and a dose of history, you can't go past the souqs.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country.   Australia   and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Morocco

1. Silver jewellery

Jewellery fiends will love Morocco's affinity with silver jewellery. Chunky rings, elaborate necklaces and patterned earrings can all be found for great prices, especially if you're willing to haggle.

Save room in your backpack for an iconic silver teapot and some delicate tea glasses. Morocco's silversmiths have this ancient art running through their veins, with centuries of craftsmanship being passed from generation to generation.

The quality (and price) of leather in Morocco is pretty phenomenal. Handcrafted handbags, wallets, belts and purses can be found in almost every souq around the country.

Festivals and events

Ramadan and eid.

The ninth and holiest of months in the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is observed by most in Morocco and is thought to be a time of spiritual rejuvenation. For this month, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset - refraining from eating and drinking during daylight hours. Eid marks the end of fasting with 3 days of feasting and celebration.

Gnaoua World Music Festival

Seaside Essaouira hosts this world-famous festival that celebrates the mysterious music of the Gnaouas, brought to Morocco centuries ago via the African slave trade. Jazz, rock, blues and pop music add a contemporary flavour, although the drums of the Gnaouas are the true soul of the festival.

Casablanca Festival

Touted as a 'celebration of all things Moroccan', this annual festival includes local and international music performances, dance, art installations, theatre, workshops and street parades. This fusion of history and modernity, innovation and tradition is a shining example of what it means to be a citizen of cosmopolitan Casablanca.

We recommend LGBTQIA+ travellers exercise discretion when travelling in Morocco as homosexuality is not widely accepted in the community. Homosexual acts (including kissing) are illegal in Morocco and can attract a fine or even a jail sentence for offenders. That said, some towns (such as Marrakech and Tangier) are considered more gay-friendly than others. As long as travellers use discretion and avoid public displays of affection, travel in Morocco should not be a problem.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or   ILGA  before you travel.

While Moroccan days are generally mild-to-hot or hot-and-humid, they can give way to cooler nights – outside of the summer months, anyway. Packing layers and sensible footwear to deal with Morocco's changeable climate, uneven paths and conservative culture is always a good idea.

F emale travellers aren't expected to dress as conservatively as local women, but it’s still a good idea to pack clothing options that will allow you to cover up.

About touring in morocco.

Do you plan to visit Morocco soon? We are a travel agency. We specialize in creating custom Morocco tours . We can create tours for you from Marrakech , Fes , Casablanca , Agadir , and Tangier . Our team is a Berber family that used to be nomads. We love to travel and explore new things. We have a deep understanding of the meaning of traveling, and we are committed to showing you the beauty of our country.

Our journey started when we moved from place to place with our tent. We were searching for a better life for ourselves and our herd. Unfortunately, some of our animals ran away to Algeria before the borders, and we couldn’t find them again. We sold the rest of them and moved to Merzouga in the Sahara desert. We never stopped loving travel, despite these challenges.

We were lucky to go to school and learn English. During our vacations, we worked as camel guides. We showed visitors around the Erg Chebbi dunes. After that, we discovered tourism and started Touring In Morocco as a travel agency. Luckily, Morocco has many beautiful landscapes. It also has many places to visit. Merzouga is one of the most popular tourist spots in the country. It attracts many visitors each year. As local Berber natives, we take pride in offering you the best customized Morocco tours . Morocco 7 Days Tour From Casablanca Tour

Morocco 7 Days Tour From Casablanca

This was a fantastic way of seeing pretty much every aspect of Morocco. I came home feeling like I had soaked up everything over there. You get to experience the crazy, busy Medina’s, the local traditions and culture, the beautiful blue city, the tranquil and beautiful Sahara, the coolness of the mountains and the colourful Windy City. I loved the food, the people, the shopping, the sights and sounds, all of it. I miss mint tea, the sugary the better, chicken tagines, pastillas, olives, harissa and coconut biscuits, yum.

Imperial Cities & Sahara Discovery Tour from Marrakech Tour

Imperial Cities & Sahara Discovery Tour from Marrakech

Honestly the guides and tour was amazing! The only thing that made it a bit annoying were 2 women who were on the tour. They were some of the most awful humans I have ever encountered and because of one of them yelling at the staff at the hotel and our guide for helping her, it made us 30 minutes late to depart. That then was a snowball effect which caused me to miss the ruins. So I was bummed about that; however, the professionalism of the guides with the 2 women who never once apologized for their behavior, their derogatory comments, (the list can go on) was outstanding. Issam, Moncef, and Fouad all were so respectful to them and never stopped providing 5 star hospitality to them. That speaks volumes for the tour company and the employees. The accommodations were amazing along with the food. 100% would recommend! Traveling solo as a female, I never once felt unsafe or disrespected. Because of the staff, I will be going back to Morocco!

Exotic Morocco (4 Star Hotels) Tour

Exotic Morocco (4 Star Hotels)

Tour was bursting with activities. Hotels so so especially the hotel in Marakkech. Room and towels smell of cigarettes, no lights in shower tub, no fan or AC in the room. Tour is value for the money. Tour is very suitable for fun loving young people. would have preferred better accommodation at the Sahara Desert. Inside the tents felt like a sauna during the day and night it was like a freezer. Overall good experience.

5 day trip: Sahara Fun Outdoor Experience Tour

5 day trip: Sahara Fun Outdoor Experience

We had to pick one of the several desert companies in Morocco. thankfully we made the right choice in selecting Touareg Trails for our 5-day vacation. The essential standards were their excellent rating and the large choice of activities they provided. Everything was well arranged from the moment we arrived, and every activity on the program had been fulfilled. Driving through the mountains was exhilarating, sleeping in the Sahara desert was lovely, and the hot air balloon flight above Marrakech's rocky desert was definitely unforgettable. I can certainly suggest this crew to all of my Moroccan friends, as well as anybody looking for an incredible desert vacation.

Imperial Cities Tour

Imperial Cities

- Hotels are of average cleanness and the general appearance is that they need maintenance or renovation. - Our guide did not behave appropriately and when a member of the group show and him the problem, he just continue with the excuse of joking. Also he never allowed us to stop for a moment to see the local small shops with the excuse of lug time. But on the same time he made a long stops in areas that were away from those small local shops. This was made all the time and in all the medinas. Finally he guided us to some larger shops to buy from them and he explains that the products are guarantied. Everybody in the group knew that he did all this for the commissions he get from the large shops. - The program said a visit to Royal Palaces in each city. With the exception of one, the visit was to take a picture of the main gate of the Palace, what a joke. - Meals were not included and every day we stop for lunch to some "traditional" restaurants (with only tourists as customers and a menu of 3-4 different options) which were extremely expensive compared to the price we had on many very good local restaurant that both locals and tourists used to eat. - Morocco is a very nice country and I suggest a visit to other people. I may visit it again but not through a travel agent.

Morocco Real Food Adventure Tour

  • Food & Culinary

Morocco Real Food Adventure

Fantastic journey. Deep dives into the culture and food without being overwhelming. Guides were great in cultural immersions, and felt safe throughout the trip. The trip does involve travel by a minibus, but the minibus was new, and there were plentiful stops along the way that kept the drives short. Homestays/guesthouses were awesome - great lodgings, and talking with the families who lived in the region for generations was very heartwarming. One night, after dinner, we played some 80's songs with singalong with our tour participants... this was followed by a very spontaneous drum performance by the sons of the proprietors, then a song/dance with the matriarch of the family as well. It was amazing. Great tour and memories.

What people love about Fully Guided Tours in Morocco

Great tour from start to finish! Our guide helped provide an incredible experience for all of us. Morocco itself is a beautiful country and I was grateful to experience all the food and culture
Everything is good. The tour guide Sophie is the best.
Nicely planned itinerary exploring all the essential highlights of Morocco: beautiful nature, amazing culture and tasty food; and the pacing of the road trips was also very manageable. Our tour guide Mustapha is a true gem in this trip - he answered all our questions, taught us local languages, and even arranged a surprise birthday cake for me! Definitely a trip to remember :)

Morocco Tours & Travel Guide

Morocco Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Morocco is where  Europe  and  Africa  meet – both literally and figuratively. The influence of Spanish and French culture can be heard in the discussions on the streets with French a common second language to Arabic and Spanish heard often in cities like Chefchaouen.

Add the beauty of the  Mediterranean , the Sahara Desert, and the sprawling Atlas Mountains that divide the country’s north from the south and you get one of the most beautiful environmental contrasts anywhere in the world.

Start your trip in Marrakech, where deals on Moroccan carpets, samples of olives, and spices can be found in the Jemaa El Fna, the famed square and market where capitalism knows no bounds. From there, ride into the desert and see Ait Ben Haddou – a desert fortress that’s been in many great movies such as “Gladiator.”

Make sure to arrange a camel tour into the desert where you’ll spend the night under the stars, and then awake early to see the sun rising on the Sahara. Continue north to Fes where the Medina (the old town) is even more impressive than that in Marrakech. If time permits, find yourself in Chefchaouen, a small town known for blue painted homes visible for miles.

Marrakech: Negotiation is king

When you arrive in Marrakech , the first rule is “everything is negotiable.” From the taxis to the markets, haggling is simply a way of life in this town. As you arrive on the breathtaking Jemaa El Fna, take in the beauty of the square and the local architecture before you start wandering down the long corridors of the Medina – the market where deals on everything are waiting to be had. Do not miss Lamb Alley – a place with some of the most flavorful and moist meat, served with fresh bread and a bowl of salt.

The Desert : A Gateway to a Land of Beauty Think back to the scene in Gladiator when Russell Crowe’s character Maximus is fighting other gladiators in the ring. That scene was shot at Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site that thankfully has been preserved well enough for you to explore.

As you proceed onwards to Dades Gorge, prepare to gasp at the vibrant colors of the rock as you wind through narrow canyons. You should end your tour at Erg Chebbi, where a young man on foot will guide you and your camel to a desert camp. Spend the night eating a typical Moroccan meal consisting of chicken tagine, steamed vegetables, and classic Moroccan tea.

And when you awake early, worry not. Your groggy, coffee-less self will manage to get going because soon you’ll be seeing the golden-orange hues of sun as they illuminate the Sahara. A sight not to be missed on any Moroccan tour.

Festivals in Morocco

Morocco hosts many unique festivals. Attending one of these festivals is a great way to experience Moroccan culture to its fullest.

Some top Morocco Festivals to attend include:

1. Timitar Music Festival - Taking place during the summer, this is the pinnacle North African music experience. Attended by upwards of 500,000 people each year, the festival is especially unique for showcasing and highlighting the Amazigh culture. Both contemporary and traditional artists are featured during the Timitar Music Festival.

2. Fes Festival - To take in some ancient and fascinating traditional Moroccan music, the Fes Festival cannot be missed. It features entrancing music and dance and is a wonderful introduction to Moroccan culture. This festival began in 1994, and continues to grow in popularity for visitors and local alike.

3. Gnaoua World Music Festival - Held in Essaouira during the summer, the Gnaoua music festival is a meeting place for musical artists from around the world, as well as a great place to hear the unique traditional sounds of Gnaoua.

4. Imilchil Marriage Festival - This unique celebration takes place in the small town of Imilchil. A local legend with striking similarities to “Romeo and Juliet” began this holiday. It is said that two young lovers from different tribes fell in love but were forbidden to be together. They perished by crying themselves to death. Today the Imilchil Marriage Festival is a way for young eligible people from different tribes to meet each other, with their families blessings.

5. Tan-Tan Moussem - For an off the beaten track experience, this annual fair brings together over 30 tribes from the Southern parts of Morocco for a day of fun events, dancing, food, and discourse. Held every December, it is not frequently attended by tourists, so for the adventurous traveler, this should be on your Morocco list.

6. Festival of Roses - Morocco is an extremely warm climate, so the seasons for abundant plant life are brief but spectacular. Held every Spring in the “Valley of the Roses”, this festival is a frequent inclusion on Morocco tours.

Food in Morocco

Moroccan food is eclectic, combining classic North African flavors with European influences. While fairly healthy, Moroccan cooking can be quite heavy; lamb is found in several dishes like hearty stews. Spices that are commonly used include cumin, saffron, turmeric, ground ginger, paprika, cardamom, and cinnamon.

Typically you eat with your hands in Morocco, which is entirely socially acceptable. Though, be careful that you don’t use your left hand as this is considered bad luck! Bread is commonly used in place of a utensil for ferrying food from place to mouth.

Morocco is a true foodie destination - even if you don’t consider yourself a foodie, you may well become one after sampling these classic Moroccan dishes:

1. Tagine - Tagine is far and away one of the most popular meals in Morocco. Named for the clay pots it is cooked in, Tagine is a staple of Moroccan cuisine. Every household has a different twist on the basics, making it a dish with a lot of personality and variation. At its core, Tagine is a thick stew featuring big chunks of lamb, beef, or chicken.

2. Couscous - Another dish that is quintessentially Moroccan, light and fluffy couscous can be found almost anywhere you eat in Morocco. It is commonly added to stews and salads or served mixed with fresh vegetables.

3. Bastilla - This savory pie traditionally was made with pigeon, and you can still find this variation, but today it is more commonly found with chicken. Similar in nature to a pot pie, Bastilla involves a flaky crust.

4. Mint Tea - A delectable and addicting concoction, Moroccan mint tea is served everywhere and is a national drink of sorts in Morocco. It might taste a bit sugary for those who’s palates are more sensitive to sweeter tastes, but you should definitely try it anyway.

5. Sardines - Not a lot of fried food finds its way into Moroccan cuisine, but sardines are one exception. Though they are served a number of different ways, one particularly delicious iteration in Morocco is stuffed and deep fried. You will probably find this dish served as street food in Morocco’s markets.

Travel in Morocco: What to Wear & Safety

Morocco is a Muslim country, and women and particular are advised to cover up. By dressing conservatively, you will be allowed to enter the country's beautiful mosques, and you will avoid more unwanted attention (women traveling to Morocco should expect some level of catcalling -- especially if traveling without a man in their group).

It is also advised to bring a scarf. With a scarf, you can cover your head, neck, shoulders, and hair if a mosque requires it. Also remember when packing -- you want to cover up, but it will also be hot! Breathable materials like linen, rayon, and blended cotton will be your best friend.

A good safety tip is to avoid marijuana while in Morocco. Although the substance is widespread (and grown in the mountains), it is illegal to smoke, and the trouble of getting caught with it is best avoided.

On a similar note, you should avoid eating majoun, a type of fudge made with cannabis that may be offered to you. Even eating a small piece of the sweet can have extreme effects, and leave a visitor disoriented and incapacitated.

In regards to safety, Morocco is a relatively safe country. When out in crowded squares, be mindful of your belongings, as just like any other city there is some chance of pickpocketing. Also be aware that there are many "unofficial guides," usually found around the outskirts of the medina.

Be aware that while these guides may try to gauge you price-wise at the end of your trip, they can still be reliable ways of getting around and finding off-the-beaten-path parts of the city. Weigh the pros and cons before engaging in a relationship with an unofficial guide.

In the end, a trip to Morocco can definitely be a safe and  family friendly  experience!

Overall Thoughts

Morocco evokes so many senses at once that sensory overload will set in within your first day. From the smell of spices and street food in the medina to the brown colors of the clay in the walls of local buildings, prepare for a sumptuous experience for the soul.

Despite language barriers, the country welcomes tourists with a warm heart, a rich  history , and a cup of tea. Let Stride help you soak it all up – especially the tea. It’s fantastic.

In Combination with Spain

One of the bonuses of traveling to Morocco is that it is only a hop, skip, and a jump from Spain . A visitor can take a ferry across the Strait of Gibraltar and arrive in the other country in less than an hour. Because of this, it's well worth it to consider taking a day trip to Spain -- or vice versa!

Incredible upgrade from the version 2

Ernestos321527017 - Mar 24, 2024

I have three pairs of these, having replaced my two previous Victory Tour 2's that I had for two years. These have much better support and hug my feet better giving me more confidence taking big swings with the driver. Excellent traction and I do not get sore feet at all after a long round of 18 holes. Nike made some great improvements in the looks of this shoe as well. Much better contours and the finish of the leather is a lot more appealing with the pebble finish and perforated venting. A great shoe, my favorites to wear and that is with a collection of 12 golf shoes to choose from. ...

Golf Shoe review

I would buy this product again and again

Bikram - Feb 23, 2024

Feel the Grip

The all-new Tour Flex Pro from Softspikes® in the key 3 forefoot spike locations and Silver Tornado spikes in the lateral and heel offer exceptional traction in all conditions and give your feet great grip on the ground when you’re going all out for the pin.

All-Round Response

We stitched a Zoom Air unit directly to the upper instead of being set into foam, so it responds to every step. A full-length plate beneath the Air unit helps increase energy return. Cushiony foam under the heel delivers an extremely smooth ride.

Old-School Look

Full-grain leather has a supple feel and sophisticated look, nodding to golf shoes from past generations.

Locked-In Feel

An internal strap stretches over then secures your foot, conforming to its shape.

More Benefits

  • Molded 3-D collar helps you stay stabilized.
  • Internal foam pods cushion your heel.
