Which countries are the easiest to obtain a Schengen visa from?

NAME: Axel Strauss  DATE: 05/03/2024

When it comes to applying for (and, more importantly, getting) a Schengen Visa , the process can be a bit tedious. Moreover, depending on where exactly you’re coming from and where exactly you’re going, your chances of being approved for one can actually vary greatly.

That’s why AXA has compiled the following lists of countries — along with some general practical info — to try and help make your Schengen visa application process less than mere luck of the draw.

  • Do I need to apply for a Schengen visa?
  • Countries with the lowest/highest Schengen visa rejection rates
  • Easiest (and most difficult) countries to apply for a Schengen Visa FROM
  • Some more helpful/practical info about getting your Schengen Visa
  • How AXA can help
  • How to apply for a Schengen visa for each of the 27 Schengen countries

Do I need to apply for a Schengen visa?

First off, you’ll want to be sure whether or not you even need a Schengen visa in the first place. And if you’re traveling to one (or more) of the 27 countries in the Schengen zone — and especially if you’re reading this — then there’s a good chance that you do. But here’s how you know for sure.

Which travelers don’t need a Schengen visa (for stays of less than 90 days)?

You don’t need a Schengen Visa if you:

  •  Are already a national of the Schengen area and/or one (or more) of the 27 European Union member countries .
  • Have already had a visa issued by one of the member countries of the Schengen area (under the condition that your stay in the Schengen area does not exceed 90 days per period of 180 days).
  • Are a national of non-EU countries and territories that have signed visa exemption agreements with the EU . These include Australia, Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Macao, Mexico, Taiwan, the U.K., the U.S., and roughly 50 more.

If you’re a passport holder* of one (or more) of the countries above, you can travel to the Schengen zone visa-free for short stays (again, for 90 days within six months). In this case, all you’ll need is to present your ticket/itinerary and a biometric passport* (issued no more than 10 years before and valid for at least 90 days after the planned date of your departure from the Schengen zone ).

*IMPORTANT HEADS-UP: As of “mid-2025,” however, the European Union does plan to introduce a new system of requirements for the countless visa-free travelers hoping to enter its borders too. And AXA has all you need to know about this system — aka ETIAS — too.

Which travelers are required to apply for a Schengen visa?

You will, however, need a Schengen visa to come to the Schengen zone if you are a citizen of one or more countries that don’t have a visa waiver agreement with the EU.

This includes nearly a hundred nations around the world — i.e., all of Africa, most of Asia and the Middle East, China, India, Russia, and so on.

Fortunately — if you do need a Schengen visa, that is — we have all you need to know about what’s required and how to apply . And once you’ve applied — how to track your Schengen visa application too.

PRO-TIP 1 : The EU also has a few key changes planned for travelers as of 2024, and AXA has all you need to know about these as well.

PRO-TIP 2 : You can see the full li sts of both countries that are exempt and those that need a visa courtesy of the European Commission .

PRO-TIP 3 : And if getting the visa seems like too much hassle (and you’re flexible with your destination, of course), AXA can also tell you which European countries you don’t need a Schengen visa fo r.

Countries with the highest/lowest Schengen visa rejection rates

And now for the nitty gritty. That is — which Schengen and EU countries are most in demand, which nationalities have applied for and received the most Schengen visas in recent years, and — ultimately — what (and where) is your best chance of being approved for one. While, of course, there’s no one clear answer, AXA probed the internet for Schengen visa statistics from 2022, compared them with previous years, and — with some official help from the European Commission — came up with the following.

A Quick Overview of EU Schengen Visa Statistics

Let’s start with the overall numbers at a glance. In 2022, there were:

  • 7.5 million Schengen visa applications in total
  • 5.9 million visa applications were issued by the consulates (plus 80,336 visas issued at the borders)
  • 1.3 million applications were rejected (17.9%)
  • 3.4 million applications were issued for multiple entry (58.1%)
  • 140,000 visas were only issued with limited territorial validity (LTV)*

*NOTE: A short-term visa with limited territorial validity ("LTV") is not valid for the entire Schengen area and only entitles the holder to stay in the Member State(s) for which the visa is valid.

In general, Schengen visa applications seem to have decreased in recent years. That is, while a total of 7.5 million Schengen visa applications were submitted in 2022, this is still less than half the average of applications in pre-COVID years. For example, in 2019, the number of Schengen visas applied for by third-country nationals was roughly 17 million.

Meanwhile, the number of rejected Schengen visa applications seems to be increasing. For example, in 2022, 17.9% of all Schengen visas worldwide were rejected, while in 2021 that number was 13.4%.

And there were also fewer multiple-entry visas issued to the Schengen area in 2022 (58.1% compared to 70.5% in 2021). I

MPORTANT: The figures above refer exclusively to the Type C (aka “short-stay” or “tourist”) Schengen visa. The European Commission’s statistics above did not take national visas into account.

PRO-TIP : Just in case, AXA can familiarize you with the different types of Schengen visas . But keep in mind that choosing a different type of visa doesn’t necessarily increase your chances of getting one.

Countries that received the most Schengen Visa applications

The countries that received the most short-term Schengen visa applications in 2022 were France , Germany , and Spain .

Countries that rejected the most Schengen Visa applications

Malta had the highest rejection rate in 2022 — with a staggering average of 36.4% of applications rejected. Sweden came in second with 29%, and France — with 22% — third.

But, on average, the rejection rate for most European countries ranges between 10 and 20 percent.

So, for example, the three countries above were followed closely by Spain (19.8%), Portugal (18.1%), the Netherlands (17.4%), Germany (16.2%), and Austria (15.9%).

Greece, Italy, and Switzerland averaged roughly 12% each.

In short, this makes the 11 countries above the most difficult to be approved for a Schengen Visa to in 2022.

Countries that rejected the least Schengen Visa applications

Meanwhile, the European Commission found that the top five countries that approved the most Schengen visas (i.e., had the lowest rejection rates) in 2022 were: Iceland (with an average 1.9% rejection rate), Lithuania (7.8%), Latvia (9.5%), and Finland and Slovakia (both with 9.7%, respectively). I

IMPORTANT NOTE : However, AXA also observed that the average rejection rates have increased in most of these countries in recent years. For example, back in 2019 (i.e., pre-COVID), Finland, Latvia, and Lithuania— like Iceland — still had an average rejection rate of between 1 and 2 percent (compared to nearly 10% each just three years later).

To Summarize

We know — that’s a lot of math already. And if you’d like even more numbers, you can consult the official European Commission website above and download specific statistical files for each year from 2009 to 2022. In the meantime, here’s a simple breakdown:

  • Iceland is your best bet of being approved for a Schengen visa, while for Malta you’re going to need the most luck (which, in our humble opinion, might have something to do with the weather).
  • With some of the northern and/or Eastern European Schengen states — i.e., Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Slovakia, Slovenia, etc. — your chances are better than the average.
  • Greece, Italy, and Switzerland are slightly tougher.
  • And Scandinavia — along with top tourist destinations like France, Germany, Portugal, and Spain — tend to be the toughest to get approved for a Schengen visa to.

Easiest / Most Difficult Countries to Apply for a Schengen Visa IN / FROM

Now that you have an idea of which countries are more likely to let you in, here’s a general overview of which countries to apply in/from to increase your chances (if you have the option*, of course).

*IMPORTANT HEADS-UP 2: A short-stay Schengen visa allows you to travel to all 27 Schengen countries (for up to 90 days within a 180-day period). However, you must spend most of your trip in the country where you applied (and vice versa — i.e., apply with the country where you plan to spend most of your trip). That is, if you have several countries in the Schengen area that you want to visit, you will need to apply for your visa with the country of your primary purpose of travel.

Top Schengen countries where obtaining a Schengen visa is easier

According to the European Commission’s (and general internet) statistics, Iceland, Finland, Latvia, and Lithuania have traditionally been the best places to get a Schengen visa approved quickly (within the Schengen itself, that is).

And ever since the European Commission started publicizing statistics in 2009, Baltic and Nordic Schengen states have generally tended to approve the vast majority of Schengen visa applications. In addition, these countries have to process much fewer requests when compared to popular destinations like France, Germany, Portugal, etc. And this can also sometimes mean less hassle in getting your visa approved.

In which countries were the most Schengen visas applied for?

If we’re talking outside of the Schengen zone, the top 10 countries that issued the most Schengen visas — via the consulates of the EU and Schengen-associated states — in 2022 were:

  • Turkey (778,409 visa applications)
  • Russia (687,239 visa applications)
  • India (671,928 Visa applications)
  • Morocco (423,201 Visa applications)
  • Algeria (392,053 visa applications)
  • Saudi Arabia (357,764 visa applications)
  • Great Britain (282,109 visa applications)
  • Thailand (208,356 Visa applications)
  • United Arab Emirates (187,196 visa applications)
  • Tunisia (168,346 visa applications)

Which countries have received the most visa rejections?

Meanwhile, the following 10 passport holders had the least luck in 2022:

  • Algeria (48.2% of visa applications were rejected)
  • Nigeria (45.6% of visa applications were rejected)
  • Guinea-Bissau (45.6% of visa applications were rejected)
  • Ghana (44.2% of visa applications were rejected)
  • Sri Lanka (44.2% of visa applications were rejected)
  • Senegal (43.8% of visa applications were rejected)
  • Haiti (43.2% of visa applications were rejected)
  • Pakistan (43.0% of visa applications were rejected)
  • Guinea (42.7% of visa applications were rejected)
  • Mali (41.6% of visa applications were rejected)

NOTE: AXA also found that, compared to the previous year, the number of rejections from the following five countries particularly increased:

  • Russia (3.2% in 2021 vs. 10.2% in 2022)
  • Egypt (17% in 2021 vs. 18.8% in 2022)
  • Ivory Coast (24.5% vs. 2021 to 29.8% in 2022)
  • Angola (20.5% in 2021 vs. 26.3% in 2022)
  • Belarus (1.1% in 2021 vs. 1.9% in 2022)

Which countries have the lowest rejection rates for Schengen visas?

And, finally, here are the top 10 passport holders who seem to be getting approved the most:

  • Liberia (1% of visa applications rejected)
  • Guatemala (1.5% of visa applications rejected)
  • Belarus (1.9% of visa applications rejected)
  • New Zealand (2.4% of visa applications rejected)
  • Paraguay (2.4% of visa applications rejected)
  • Ukraine (2.7% of visa applications rejected)
  • Bosnia (2.8% of visa applications rejected)
  • Costa Rica (2.8% of visa applications rejected)
  • Botswana (3.2% of visa applications rejected)
  • Australia (3.5% of visa applications rejected)

So that’s a general breakdown of what to expect when applying for your Schengen visa based on your country of origin and your destination country. And now here are some more basic, universal numbers that should help too (and that don’t depend on the specific country).

Some more helpful/practical info about getting your Schengen Visa

How much does a schengen visa cost.

Schengen Visa costs are universal.

  • The standard fee for one adult is €80.
  • Children between the ages of six and twelve can get one for €40.
  • And for children under the age of six the Schengen visa is free*.

*If you’re coming to the Schengen for research and/or study purposes, are under 25 years old and traveling with charitable organizations, and/or are taking part in certain sporting or cultural events — your visa fee may be waived in some circumstances too.

PRO-TIP : While AXA strives to bring you the latest regarding any and all Schengen Visa requirements for travelers near and far, it’s always a good call to double-check with the European Commission’s official visa website .

IMPORTANT HEADS-UP: In addition, in early 2024, the European Commission announced that it had “ assessed the need to revise the visa fee amounts and concluded that they should be increased. ” The proposed increase would mean that Schengen visas cost 90€ (a 10€ increase) for adults and 45€ (a 5€ increase) for children. So we recommend you stay tuned to the official sources above.

How long does it take to get a Schengen visa?

The wait times don’t necessarily depend on the country either, and the average wait time for your Schengen Visa to be processed is generally 15 days across the board.

That said, the actual processing time will depend on your particular case (as well as a number of other factors). While it’s not statistically common, some embassies have been known to take anywhere from 30 to 60 days to process a visa.

So — again, while Iceland or Latvia might be a little quicker to get to than Malta or France — expect a 2-week wait time at the very least no matter where you’re going or coming from.

Can I get a Schengen visa online?

Not as of early 2024. That is, traditionally, you still need to be physically present for your Schengen visa application process at some point (for biometric data collection, and usually with a bunch of paperwork to boot).

However, the EU does plan to bring the whole Schengen Visa application process online eventually — with the exact date the change will take place yet to be announced. AXA can tell you all about it in the meantime (and — like you probably — we’re keeping our fingers tightly crossed).

How AXA can help

But while there is no guarantee that your Schengen visa will be approved, one thing AXA can guarantee is to provide you with affordable, top-quality Schengen Travel insurance to bring you one big step closer to the Schengen Zone.

First off, to be approved for a Schengen visa — travel insurance is mandatory. Not only that, but your plan must also meet the following criteria:

  • Guarantee minimum coverage for at least €30,000 in medical expenses
  • Cover any expenses that might arise in connection with repatriation for medical reasons
  • Cover you in all member states of the Schengen Area (not just Spain)
  • Cover you during the entire duration of your trip and stay in the Schengen Zone.

Fortunately, all three AXA plans ( Low-Cost , Europe Travel , and Multi-Trip ) meet the necessary requirements above.

Moreover, if your Schengen visa is denied , AXA’s plans are refundable in most cases. We’ll only ask that you provide the appropriate documentation (i.e., an official explanation as to why your visa was refused by the relevant embassy, consulate, or visa application center).

Our plans also cover you in all 27 Schengen territories (and beyond).  Plus getting an AXA travel insurance plan is quick and easy — and doesn’t depend on either where you’re going or where you’re coming from! In fact, unlike the Schengen visa itself, our plans can be purchased online in just a few minutes, from anywhere in the world.

The AXA travel insurance certificate — accepted by all Schengen embassies and consulates worldwide — can then be downloaded (and printed) online instantly too.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs) about how to obtain the easiest Schengen Visa

What should I do if my Schengen visa is refused?

If your visa is rejected, you usually have two options — apply again, or write a letter of appeal. You can learn more in the EU’s Article 32(3) of the Visa Code of the Schengen Agreement . The outcome of your appeal will ultimately depend on the authorities of the Schengen country for which you applied.

Can I work or study with a tourist visa?

No. While the tourist (or Type C) allows visitors to enter the Schengen zone for a short business trip, a holiday, and/or to visit family members, it cannot be converted into a work or study permit. AXA can tell you more about that .

What happens if I overstay my Schengen visa?

The consequences of overstaying your visa range from paying a fine, deportation, jail time, or even being banned from the country. And A XA is happy to help you avoid all of them.

Can I extend my Schengen visa?

You can, but only in exceptional circumstances. AXA can tell you more about that too.

Are there any COVID restrictions for entering the Schengen Zone?

No. As of 2022, all travel restrictions implemented to control the spread of COVID-19 have been lifted in the EU (and the Schengen).

Visit Sweden up to 90 days during 180 days – apply for a visa

If you are a citizen in a country outside the EU and want to visit Sweden for a maximum of 90 days, you may need to apply for a visa. A visa is only valid for your stay in the Schengen countries for up to 90 days during a period of 180 days.

If you are a citizen of a country outside the EU and you want to visit Sweden (and the other Schengen countries), you may need to apply for a visa. A visa is a permit to enter a country and stay there up to 90 days.

Whether you need a visa depends on what country you are from or if you have a residence permit in another Schengen country or if you are permanently living in an EU country.

If you have a valid residence permit issued by another Schengen country, you do not need to apply for an entry visa to visit Sweden up to 90 days.

In certain countries, another Schengen country might represent Sweden. There are countries where Sweden has no representation, in other words has no embassy or consulate-general and is not represented by another country. If that is the case, you must check what applies to your area when it comes to visa applications.

If you are submitting your application to another Schengen country authority abroad, you need to contact them in advance. The reason for that is because that country’s requirements for documents apply. The documents should also be translated into that country’s language.

This is how you apply for a visa

Most people who are applying for a visa need to do it through an external service provider. You can visit your embassy’s website to find out if your embassy has an agreement with an external service provider.

If your embassy does not have an agreement with an external service provider and you are applying for a visa through the Swedish embassy in Tehran (Iran) you can apply through our e-service.

If you are unable to apply through an external service provider or through our e-services, you can apply by handing in a form directly to your embassy.

Apply for a visa through an external service provider

Find out if you need to apply for a visa through an external service provider by visiting your embassy’s website. There you can find more information about to apply.

When you apply through an external service provider you will be asked to give your fingerprint and application at the same time

Apply for a visa through e-service – applies to three embassies

If you are applying at this embassy you can submit your application online:

You can attach appendices in the e-service. A complete application with attached appendices will make the processing of your application easier. Before you begin the e-service you should remember to prepare the appendices in digital format (scanned) so that you can attach them to your application.

Please notice that if you have not been active in your application (added or edited information) for 72 hours, your application will be removed. Every time you edit your application you start a new 72-hour span, but in total you can only save your application for 14 days. If you have not submitted your application within 14 days, it will be removed.

Apply for a visa through an embassy

If your embassy does not have an agreement with an external service provider or if it does not offer an e-service, you must apply directly at the embassy. Keep in mind that it is important that you check to make sure what applies in your case. You can find more information on the embassy’s website.

After you have submitted your application

Follow your visa case.

If you applied online, you can follow your case in My page. You can see if a decision has been made and in some cases also book or cancel an appointment for a visit to a Swedish embassy or consulate-general. You can also see the information and documents that you have enclosed in your application.

Log in to My page

Waiting time for the decision

You will usually receive an answer within two weeks, however the processing times at the embassies or consulates-general vary.

After the decision

The embassy or consulate-general will make the decision in your case and will notify you if you have been granted a visa or not. If you have submitted your application at the company that collects applications for the embassy or consulate-general you will receive a decision from that company.

If you are granted a visa, a permit sticker will be glued into your passport. The permit sticker says when and for how long the visa applies.

If you are not granted a visa, you can appeal the decision to the Migration Court. If the decision has been made by another member state that represents Sweden, the decision can be appealed to that member state’s authorities.

If you want to appeal

If your application has been rejected you can submit a written appeal no later than three weeks from the day when you received the decision. Instructions on how to submit the appeal can be found in the decision.

If the embassy or consulate-general changes the decision

The decision might be changed if new information is submitted. In that case, you will be notified and your visa is glued into your passport.

If the embassy or consulate-general does not change the decision it is forwarded

If the appeal was submitted on time, and the embassy or consulate-general does not feel that there is any reason to change the decision, they will forward the case to a Migration Court in Sweden as soon as possible. The court will then make the decision.

Facts about visa

A visa is only valid for your stay in the Schengen countries for up to 90 days during a period of 180 days.

It says on the visa sticker that is glued into your passport how many days you may stay in the Schengen countries. The days can be used during the time period that is indicated on the sticker. The period is often 15 days longer than the number of days that you are allowed to stay in the Schengen countries. The reason for this is so that you will have a chance to change your travel date if something unforeseen happens.

The visa can be valid for multiple entries or exits

On the visa sticker it says how many times you are allowed to enter and exit the Schengen countries during the period of validity.

You may apply for a Schengen visa that is valid for multiple entries if you visit Sweden on a regular basis. A visa with multiple entries can be valid for stays of up to 90 days during a 180 day period for up to five years.

The visa may only apply to certain countries

If you receive a visa you can often visit the other Schengen countries as well.

Your visa may in certain cases only be valid for entry and stay in Sweden or in certain Schengen countries, for example if your passport is not accepted by all Schengen countries.

Calculate your visa time

With the help of EU’s visa calculator you can calculate when you can travel into the Schengen area again, and how many days you can stay.

Controls at the border

Your short-stay visa allows you to travel to Sweden and usually to other Schengen States. It does not automatically entitle you to enter the Schengen area therefore you may have to provide certain information at border or other controls. You may, for instance, have to provide information on your means of support, how long you intend to stay in Sweden and why you are visiting Sweden. In some cases, such checks may result in a refusal for the visa holder to enter Sweden or the Schengen area.

You should therefore carry with you copies of the documents which you presented when you applied for the visa (e.g. letters of invitation, travel confirmations, other documents stating the purpose of your stay).

Extend a visit

A visitor's visa is valid for a maximum of 90 days. If you have already stayed in a Schengen country for 90 days during the last 180-day period, you cannot extend your visa. Instead you can apply for a visitor’s residence permit.

Read more about a visitor's permit

Extending a visa

You can apply for an extension to your visa if your combined period of stay in the Schengen countries will not exceed 90 days in a 180-day period.

This is possible in the following cases:

  • force majeure – unforeseen events that prevent you from leaving Sweden or the Schengen countries, e.g. extreme weather
  • humanitarian reasons – if you or a close relative who lives in Sweden has been taken seriously ill, for example.

You can be granted a visa extension

  • if you have compelling personal reasons – this includes health care or a business trip.

The reason behind your need to extend the visa must have occurred after your entry into Sweden. You need to apply to extend your visa before it expires. Submit your application for an extension well in advance so that the Migration Agency has enough time to process your application before your current visa expires.

When you submit an application to extend your visa, you do not need to pay any fee. However, if the Migration Agency estimates that the application is based on strong personal reasons, you must pay a fee of 30 euros when we make a decision on your application. You will receive information on how to pay the fee before we make a decision.

An application to extend a visa because of force majeure or humanitarian reasons is free of charge.

How to apply for a visa extension

An application for a visa extension must be submitted before your visa expires. Leave your application at one of the Swedish Migration Agency’s Service Centres.

The Migration Agency's visiting addresses See also the instructions in the application forms for any additional documents that you may need to attach.

You should enclose

  • the application form Application for Schengen Visa, form 118031. It is available at all Swedish Migration Agency’s permit units and here at our website
  • copies of the pages in your passport that show personal data and all entry stamps. The passport must be valid for the time that your stay in Sweden is expected to last
  • an explanation why you think you should be granted a visa extension
  • documentation which shows the reason why you need to prolong your stay (including certificates from companies, doctor’s certificate or similar)
  • individual medical travel insurance which covers the costs which could arise as a result of emergency medical assistance, emergency hospitalisation or medical repatriation. The insurance should cover costs of at least EUR 30,000 and be valid in all the Schengen countries.

Applications

Decisions regarding visas.

The Swedish Migration Agency will send you its decision regarding your visa application. If the Migration Agency has decided to grant you the right to an extended visa you will receive a permit sticker in your passport as proof of your extended visa. You or a representative (someone acting on your behalf) should go to the Swedish Migration Agency to have the sticker glued into your passport. Your representative needs to be authorised by you.

If the Swedish Migration Agency decides not to grant you an extended visa, your application will be rejected. A rejection of a matter which is reviewed according to the Visa Code cannot be appealed.

You have the right to stay in Sweden for as long as you have a valid visa. If your visa has expired you lose the right to stay in any of the Schengen countries. If you have applied to extend your stay after your visa has expired, you do not have the right to stay in Sweden and wait for the decision.

If you have applied for an extension to stay in Sweden for more than 90 days during the last 180-day period, other rules apply. Read more under the heading Visits lasting longer than 90 days.

How To Get A Swedish Visa? (Government Channels)

The application process is the last thing we must discuss for your Sweden visa for US citizens. This process can be long and tiresome.

If you choose to apply for your Swedish visa the traditional way, I'll outline the exact steps you need to take.

Step 1: Gather The Required Documents

Getting your needed documentation together is the first and most important step .

You can do it later, but I advise doing it right away. Gathering your paperwork can take time, so ensure you have it all before your visa interview.

Step 2: Complete TheTourist Visa Application Form

You will see the visa application form is on the list of required documents. After you have all the other documents, you mustp rint out the visa application form and complete it. Once your visa application form is complete, remember to sign it at the bottom.

Step 3: Schedule A Visa Appointment

The next step is to schedule a visa interview at a Swedish Embassy or Consulate in your country.

The Swedish Embassy outsources the applications to a dedicated visa application centre. You book a Sweden visa appointment through the visa application centre.

You can get an expedited visa appointment by applying for your visa through AtlysBlack .

Step 4: Attend Your Visa Appointment

When you arrive for your appointment, an embassy or consulate employee will conduct a quick in-person interview .

You must bring your Schengen Visa Application and other required documentation to the interview. The staff person will also inquire briefly about the goal of your journey.

The employee will collect your biometric information after the interview. You won't need to do this if you recently visited the Schengen area within the last 59 months. However, you must pay your visa application cost once your biometric information has been entered into the system.

Step 5: Wait For Your Visa To Be Processed

The Sweden visa processing time can take 15 to 30 business days . How long you will wait depends on if you entered your information correctly.

Once your visa has been finalized, authorities will contact you by phone, email, or SMS (depending on your preferred contact method).

Step 6: Collect Your Approved Sweden Tourist Visa

Once your Sweden tourist visa is issued, you can begin to rejoice. Your application for a tourist visa to Sweden is now complete.

You can pick up your approved Swedish tourist visa at the Embassy or Consulate.

The Application Process for Sweden Tourist Visa

Complete the Sweden Tourist Visa application form

You have to complete the online form and could get it from the Sweden embassy in your country. Complete, sign, and date it. Keep it until you deliver it to the officials during your interview. Please be cautious while you complete it.

Gather the required documents

Now you should collect the required documents. Please remember the Schengen visa has high credibility, but the states are strict with their regulations and laws. So don’t take anything easy. Pay attention to even small details.

Book a visa appointment

When you gather all the requirements, you should arrange an appointment. You should get one to the Swedish:

  • or a visa center authorized by the Swedish government.

Attend the appointment

Once the time comes, participate in the appointment. Please get there on time. You should submit the application and the required documents to the Swedish officials. Then you should pass an interview. The Swedish visa officer will ask you a few questions about your background and the purpose of your trip. Please be confident, friendly, and give honest answers. The fate of your visa rides on this interview. If officials suspect you have illegal intentions, they won’t issue the visa.

Pay the fees

You must pay the visa for the Sweden tourist visa application. The fee for adults is €80. You should check whether the embassy/consulate you apply to accept cash/credit card. The tourist visa’s cost for 6-12 children is €40. Under six children are visa-free.

Wait for processing

At this step, you have to wait until your application gets processed. It often takes about 15 days for a Sweden tourist visa to get processed. If your application gets accepted, the officials will send you the visa stuck on your passport. If not, they will inform you through a letter explaining the reason.

Sweden Tourist Visa Interview Questions

The Sweden visa officer will ask you a few questions during the interview. If they don’t find you fit, they could reject your application. You can avoid this by prior knowledge.

There are general and often unusual personal questions that the visa officer might ask you:

  • The place you live
  • Educational background
  • Marriage status, children, will they travel with you.
  • Are you expecting it?
  • Do any of your friends or family members live in one of the Schengen countries?
  • Financial status
  • Permission leave from your employer.
  • The purpose of your visit to Sweden.

What people say about us

Sweden visa policy.

Sweden maintains the same regional policy as other Schengen countries in Europe because it is also a Schengen country. All visitors coming to Sweden must hold Schengen visas issued by a Swedish foreign mission unless they are from a visa-exempt country.

After becoming a signatory to the Schengen Agreement, Sweden adopted the Schengen protocol, allowing it to issue Schengen visas and recognize Schengen visas issued by other member nations. The wider policy of the Schengen Agreement is designed to foster the socio-cultural, economic, and judicial integration of European countries. While most countries recognize Schengen protocols, including non-Schengen countries, The Republic of Ireland does not and operates its visa policy.

With a Schengen visa, a visitor can enter Sweden by land, air, or sea and stay for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. This visa can also be used to travel to other Schengen countries for short trips instead of applying for a new visa for each new country. However, if you wish to stay for much longer, you must apply for a long-stay visa at the Swedish embassy instead.

It Is also important to point out that you can also use a. Schengen visa issued by Sweden to visit other non-Schengen countries that observe Schengen protocols despite not being part of the Union. These countries are Romania, Cyprus, Bulgaria, and Iceland, to mention a few.

Sweden Visa-Free Countries

Sweden maintains a comprehensive visa exempt list that is constantly updated in accordance with regional Schengen Agreements with other member states. Nationals from any country on this list don’t have to apply for a visa to enter Sweden, as they can do so visa-free. However, they must get ETIAS pre-screening approval to do so.

If you are from any of the following countries, you can stay in Sweden for up to 90 days in 6 months.

If you are not from any of the visa-exempt countries, you can still enter Sweden, but you must hold a residence permit or a visa issued by Sweden, another Schengen state, or the Principality of Monaco.

Sweden Schengen Visa

Sweden issues Schengen visas like the 26 other Schengen countries in the region by being a signatory to the Schengen Agreement. Schengen visas are valid for 180 days, and visitors can stay in the country for up to 90 days. This visa is open to nationals from most countries on the planet that are not on the Schengen list. Schengen visas are mostly issued as multiple entry visas for tourism, business, and transit in some cases.

This visa can be used to enter multiple countries in the Schengen region apart from Sweden, and it is also accepted as an entry document by Cyprus, Bulgaria, and Romania. However, the visitor must respect the 90/180 rule and stay within the countries they visit.

Note: Visas and permits issued by Romania, Cyprus, or Bulgaria are not recognized by Sweden.

Sweden doesn’t have a visa-on-arrival policy, so holders must be issued visas or pre-screened by the ETIAS System before being allowed into the country. Also, they must have valid passports that will not expire for at least another 3 months after their departure date.

  • Sweden ETIAS

All Schengen countries agreed to adopt a single pre-screening system to check visitors for potential threats. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is a vetting program that screens visitors from visa-exempt countries for short visits. While visas may not be required for such visitors, they must pass the Etias check to obtain approval before they can visit Sweden or any Schengen country. This program is already partially in operation but will be fully implemented for all visitors by 2024.

Under current guidelines, an eligible applicant must fill out an online application form. The form must contain accurate information about their passport data, Itinerary and their personal details. In the same form are a set of security questions which they must answer honestly about their status. Also, there is an application fee which must be paid before they can submit it for processing but this fee is not charged for persons under 6 and above 80 years old.

ETIAS processing takes under 30 minutes to get approved or denied but in a situation where neither occurs, the applicant's data will be forwarded to the Local unit of the Swedish department for further vetting.

Key Details About Sweden ETIAS

Only For Short Visits: The Swedish European Travel Information and Authorization System is strictly for short-term visits that will not exceed 90 days. It is not a long-stay residency visa and should not be used as such. If you want to stay in Sweden for much longer, you should get a visa instead.

Respect the 90/180 Rule: You should respect the 90/180 rules during your time in Sweden or any other Schengen country. This rule restricts the visitor to just 90 days of stay in 180 days. Staying a single day more within a 180-day period is prohibited. The same rule holds if you travel to two or more countries in the region.

Primary Destination Rule:  Another rule to bear in mind is the primary entry rule. ETIAS visitors who wish to visit more than one Schengen country must list the first country they will enter as their primary destination. If Sweden is the first country you plan to visit before traveling to another country, and that appears on your ETIAS, traveling to another country first is discouraged; you key even encounter issues with the immigration officers of that country.

Use the Same Passport:  You must travel to Sweden with the passport you used for the ETIAS application. Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure date. Bear in mind that Etias approvals are linked to the passport you apply with and can be generated electronically by Swedish Immigration. If you bring a different passport for your trip, it will be assumed that you don’t have entry approval so you will be denied entry.

Local Unit:  ETIAS processing only takes some minutes and not more than 20 minutes in rare cases. However, in special situations, an applicant’s details will be forwarded to the local unit of the country they plan to visit for further vetting. This is the same if their data doesn’t trigger an automatic cancellation. Further vetting may take up to 3 weeks or more, but you will receive an email notification to that effect.

Aerial view Saltstraumen bridge in Norway road above sea connecting islands top down scenery transportation...

In 2021, Sweden, Norway, France and Denmark were said to turn down the highest number of visa applications from third-country citizens. Applicants applying to the embassies and consulates of these four countries were more likely to get rejected as compared to any other country in the Schengen area, as per the Schengen Visa Statistics 2021.

France, Germany and Spain received the highest number of applications in 2021.The average rejection rate for all Schengen states in 2021 was 13.4% of the total 2,926,104 applications filed from across the world. Against this, Sweden had the highest rejection rate, declining 30.6% of the 22,260 visa applications. Norway came second with 26.2% of 9,895 visa applications rejected. France turned down 21.1 % of the 652,331 applications they received. Denmark rejected 21.1% of the 26,469 applications. Belgium turned down 20.4% of 50,796 applications, whereas Malta 16.2% of 4,295 visa requests in 2021.

How did Schengen visa applications from India perform?

Sweden rejected 833 or 42.26% of 1,974 visa applications from India in 2021, whereas Norway turned down 30.69%. France issued 25,482 visas and turned down 11,959 applications during the same year. Switzerland rejected 21% of applications and issued 15,551 visas to Indian travellers last year. The Spanish consulate in Delhi saw more rejections at 30.20% as compared to Mumbai which had 15.08% of its applications rejected.

Best countries for Schengen visa?

The countries with the lowest rejection rates are Luxembourg (1.2 per cent), Slovakia (2.7 per cent), Lithuania (2.8 per cent), the Czech Republic (3.3 per cent), and Latvia (3.5 per cent).

The African continent seems to be at the receiving end of most rejections. Citizens of Guinea Bissau had 53% of the Schengen visa applications turned down, the Sengalese 52.2% and Nigerians 51%.

These statistics speak of the situation in 2021. They may or may not represent the realities of cross-border travel at the moment. The consensus is that most embassies and consulates in India are creaking under the weight of applications. Here’s a handy guide on how bad the situation i s and what you can do about it.

Tourism in Sweden - statistics & facts

An increasing number of tourists visit Sweden, and tourism consumption reached 337 billion Swedish kronor in 2018. That was roughly 20 billion kronor more compared to the previous year, and over 100 billion kroner more than in 2008. The positive development of the tourism industry contributes a significant amount to the Swedish gross domestic product (GDP) and is forecast to reach 603 billion kronor in 2028. Aside from the direct monetary contribution, the tourism industry creates jobs all over Sweden, and is expected to employ 674 thousand people as of 2028. The reason behind the exponential growth is the continuous increase in tourists visiting the country. Approximately 65 million overnight stays were registered in Sweden in 2018, out of which 17.3 million overnight stays were made by international tourists . Most tourists came from the neighboring country Norway , counting nearly 3.5 million overnight stays that same year. German visitors came in second, followed by Danish tourists. Considering the traveling habits of Swedes, however, Norway is nowhere as popular. In fact, Norway ranked nine among Swedes’ favorite holiday destinations , while Spain was the most attractive country for them to visit. As the coronavirus (COVID-19) broke out in March 2020, the tourism industry faced several unexpected problems. While Sweden chose to neither implement a lockdown nor close its borders, unlike many other countries, the number of overnight stays were still strikingly low from March onwards. At the same time, Swedes showed greater interest towards vacationing at home. When asked about which countries they would visit over the next six months , Sweden was the most common answer. When and whether the tourism industry will recover from the global coronavirus crisis remains unknown. Nevertheless, as many countries have started to reopen, prospects currently look better than at the peak of the epidemic. This text provides general information. Europe Visa Success Discover Which Countries Top The List

Europe Visa Success: Discover Which Countries Top The List

“Is studying abroad worth the while?” This particular question has crossed the minds of all the study abroad aspirants at least once. But if you observe carefully and listen closely, you will hear your peers echo in unity: “Absolutely, yes!” Overseas education has that certain ring to it that always tempts students towards it. Besides an exciting learning atmosphere, studying abroad offers an immersive & transformative student life. However, plenty of students are hesitant to take the big leap, mostly because of the fear of visa rejection.

Student visa approval forms an integral part of a student’s study abroad journey. After all, being able to travel to a new country and experience new culture is actually what makes overseas education so special. And without a student visa, none of it is possible. In that case, a country’s visa success rate becomes the primary factor that you must consider while selecting your study abroad destination. Just keep in mind that the concern for visa rejection must not deter you from realizing your study abroad dreams; you just need to make the right choice in terms of study abroad destination.

Of all the other destinations across the world, Europe enjoys a fairly high aggregate visa success rate. This is a major reason why European countries are becoming increasingly popular among study abroad aspirants. While Europe as a whole maintains a great visa success rate, its member countries represent varying numbers.

As India’s leading Europe admission partner, Edugo Abroad has achieved exceptional visa success numbers for the students. Drawing from our long experience of 12 years, we have gathered substantial data that reflects our visa success rate for major European countries.

While European countries offer a sense of security, ultimately a student’s visa success rate depends on a combination of factors which are as follows. These serve as essential tips for students to help them avoid visa rejection for their desired destination.

  • Choice of University

The university that a student decides to enroll in plays a key role in the visa approval rate. That’s because the admission application status has a direct influence on a student’s visa application. If you fail to clear the university’s eligibility list, you won’t receive the offer letter. And without admission, you won’t have an authentic purpose to travel to that country. Resultantly, your chances of facing visa rejection get higher without the confirmation of admission.

In that regard, every student must accurately measure their academic capabilities against university requirements, and choose an option that suits them best. Overestimating or underestimating your potential can actually cost you a golden chance of studying abroad. A better solution would be to seek professional help from a reliable overseas consultancy for university selection.

  • Interview Performance

Consider this as an extension of the above point. The university interview is an important step in your admission application. It is your opportunity to justify why you’re a good candidate for the university.

During the interview, a student is expected to explain their genuine motivation behind their choice of course and the university. They must be able to justify how their educational background aligns with their current choices and what they expect to gain out of it. In simple words, you must convince the authorities that you are deserving of admission to the university to avoid visa rejection.

  • English Proficiency

The majority of the international universities teach their programmes in the English language. As such, a student’s proficiency in the English language is a crucial factor for the visa success rate. This particular requirement is to ensure that students can comprehend the curriculum and the lectures without any difficulty. Hence, study abroad aspirants must constantly work to improve their grasp of the English language to avoid potential visa rejection.

Interview Performance

  • Relevance With Future Goals

This is another important point of discussion that dictates the university interview and the admission process. A student must be able to establish a clear link between their choice of course and their future professional goals to clear the interview and get a confirmation letter.

Relevant educational background is not enough to get through the university interview. You have to showcase how that particular course and the university will contribute to your career goals. It is important to note that universities are interested in candidates who have a clear professional vision and blueprint laid out. In that regard, a student’s educational choices must directly connect with their future career goals to minimize the risk of visa rejection.

Relevance With Future Goals

  • Financial Documents

The financial documents hold a strong weightage among factors that influence a student’s visa success rate. You must accurately demonstrate the financial backup that you have submitted in your file to get your student visa approved. Essentially, the financial records must reflect the student's living expenses for 1 full year which includes tuition fees, housing charges & other expenses.

Let’s understand this with an example. Let’s say that your university fee is €15,000 and you have paid €5,000 as a deposit, the remaining amount becomes €10,000. Now let’s suppose that your university is in Paris. Then the annual living expenses would be calculated as follows: €1,000 (per month) X 12 = € 12,000. By adding this figure to the remaining fee, we get: €12,000 + €10,000 = €22,000. That’s the minimum amount you must present as the financial backup to get your Paris student visa approval.

A student can reflect this amount in the following forms: (A) Bank Loan (sanction letter is acceptable) (B) Fixed Deposit or (C) Balance in Savings Account. The only other requirements are that all these must be in nationalized banks and can be easily liquidated.

On A Concluding Note

While choosing the right study abroad destination , a country’s visa success rate is the first aspect that a student must consider. As such, Europe has gained immense traction among students as the member countries boast an impressive visa success rate. If a student performs well in the above-mentioned factors and presents thorough documentation, then his/her chances of visa rejection practically fall to zero.

Building on a long experience of 12 years, Edugo Abroad’s team of expert counsellors ensures an error-free and thorough visa application process for all the study abroad aspirants.

Author_Image

From the jagged peaks of the Kebnekaise massif to the serene archipelago of Stockholm, Sweden's natural beauty is a symphony for the senses. Beyond its natural wonders, Sweden boasts a rich cultural tapestry. Explore the vibrant capital, Stockholm, where medieval architecture mingles seamlessly with contemporary design. But did you know that it has a  high-quality Bologna education system, making it one of the best in the world?

Yes, you heard it right. When it comes to how you can study there, the Sweden Student Visa allows international students to study in Sweden for more than 90 days. Applicants need an admission offer, proof of financial means, and health insurance. The visa is typically granted for the duration of the study program and allows limited work rights. It's a gateway for global students to pursue education in Sweden.

But getting a Swedish student visa can be super difficult at times, especially the application process. To help you with that (and much, much more), Yocket is now offering a special 1:1 counseling session for you to clear all your doubts and misconceptions about studying abroad.

Be it LOR, SOP, resumes, visa application or even helpful insights about the university in Sweden that you are planning to apply to. Our experts can guide you through anything and everything with ease while avoiding all the complexities.

Read the blog to learn more about the most common causes of student visa rejection in Sweden and avoid them.

Probability of Success Rate of Student Visa in Sweden

The probability of success for a student visa in Sweden is generally high, given the country's welcoming approach to international students. Meeting application requirements, including an admission offer, financial proof, and health insurance, significantly enhances the likelihood of approval.

Sweden, like the rest of Europe, is famed for its excellent educational institutions. It is one of the top countries in the world for equality, making it ideal for students of all genders. The Swedish student visa success rate with residence permits in Sweden lies between 50-60%.

Top 8 Reasons For Sweden Student Visa Rejection

It's distressing to have a student visa denied because of a mistake on your part. But don't worry; by checking this list before submitting your application, you can avoid making such inaccuracies. Here is a list of the top 8 reasons for Swedish student visa rejection:

Incomplete Student Visa Application

One of the first documents to fill out while planning to study in Sweden is the visa application form. The student is represented at a consulate through this application. Any missing information can result in the Sweden student visa rejection. In addition, if you have any queries about the details mentioned, you should resolve them at the earliest to avoid any technical complications.

Sweden University Application Process

Missing Supporting Documents

Along with the application form, a set of documents has to be submitted. It primarily comprises identity proof, health insurance, a university letter, and bank documents. If any of these papers are missing or not submitted in the required format while applying online, the likelihood of a Swedish student visa rejection rate increases. Furthermore, the documents must meet international standards, which necessitates the translation of documents written in regional languages.

Criminal Records

Any person with a criminal record will not be permitted to enter international waters. A student visa application with a criminal record is denied because the applicant is perceived as a threat to the country.

Unsatisfactory Personal Interview

Before a student visa for Sweden is issued, an interview is conducted. If a student cannot defend the course they have chosen or has not done enough research on Sweden and the course/university, the student visa rejection rate in Sweden increases. In addition, the student must be able to authenticate all of the information provided in the application. In such a face-to-face interview, a confident and relaxed demeanor is expected.

Insufficient Financial Proof

A student visa to Sweden is only granted if the student can demonstrate that they meet the financial conditions. To prevent Sweden student visa rejection, it is vital to be completely honest about your financial position. Bank documents and scholarship documents (if applicable) must be kept in handy.

Missed Requirements

The student visa success rate in Sweden is determined by the status of the requirements. There are academic prerequisites, such as scores and program requirements. Then, as noted in point 5, there are the financial needs. Only those students who are permitted by the immigration law officer can assimilate into the country's standard of living while studying and benefiting the most from it. Hence, a student visa is rejected if the applicant does not meet the requirements.

Best Public Universities in Sweden for International Students

Previous Visa Refusal

If an applicant's student visa has previously been denied and no adjustments have been made in the fresh application, it may be rejected again. The student may be requested to explain why their student visa was previously denied and why it should now be accepted.

Language barriers

The ability to communicate in English is a prerequisite for obtaining a student visa in Sweden. Swedish universities, on the other hand, require students to have a language competency score in order to be admitted. In the TOEFL iBT, a total score of 72 is necessary, with 17 in writing. In IELTS , a total score of 6.0 is necessary, with each section requiring a score of at least 5.5.

How to Reapply if your Student Visa is Rejected?

If your student visa application is denied, you will be informed of the reason for the denial and given a period of time to reapply. You can reapply for a student visa after the cooling-off period has passed.

If an applicant is dissatisfied with the decision, they may file a written appeal within three weeks of receiving the decision. An applicant can file an appeal by raising their objection and expressing their concerns. Although the appeal will be heard by a court, one should submit it to the Swedish Migration Agency. If the authorities are persuaded, they may grant the application without further investigation or after validating the objections by requesting additional information.

Slovenia Visa Success Rate Historical Trend

2018 – 90% success rate.

In 2018, Slovenia saw 26,403 uniform visa applications. With a whopping success rate of 90.0%, it’s evident that this year was favorable for applicants.

This high success rate could be attributed to various factors, including Slovenia’s increasing appeal as a travel destination and its stable political and economic landscape.

2019 – 89.9% Success Rate

2019 marked an escalation in both the number of visa applications and their success rate. The country received 27,722 applications, a rise from the previous year, and boasted a success rate of 89.9%.

This near-consistent high success rate indicates that while there was an increase in the number of applicants, the Slovenian consular services maintained an almost uniform criteria or standard for vetting these applications.

2020 – 85.2% Success Rate

The year 2020 was a turning point for global travel due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Nations across the globe imposed restrictions, and international travel took a back seat. Slovenia was no exception.

The number of visa applications plummeted to 4,414, reflecting the global trend and apprehension surrounding travel. However, the success rate was still a commendable 85.2%.

This reduction, when compared to the previous two years, might be due to more stringent vetting processes, health-related concerns, or a shift in the type of applicants (e.g., more essential travel over tourism).

2021 – 92.4% Success Rate

While 2021 saw an increase from the previous year’s figures, the number of applications was still significantly lower than the pre-pandemic era.

Slovenia received 6,109 uniform visa applications, with a notably high success rate of 92.4%. This surge in success rate could be the result of several factors.

Perhaps Slovenia was eager to boost its tourism sector and hence was more accommodating, or perhaps the applicants were more selective and prepared, anticipating the post-pandemic restrictions and requirements.

2022 – 81.9% Success Rate

By 2022, the world was gradually recovering from the pandemic’s shocks, and so was international travel. The visa applications for Slovenia saw a significant rise, reaching 17,680.

The success rate was 81.9%, a slight decline from the previous year.

This might indicate a return to more standard application procedures, a broader range of applicants including tourists, or perhaps a more cautious approach by Slovenia in light of global events.

What Are The Factors Influencing Visa Success Rates?

While the high success rate is promising, several factors influence the outcome of an individual visa application, including:

1. Completeness of the Application: An application that is complete and correctly filled out has a higher chance of being approved.

2. Required Documents: Submitting all required supporting documents in the correct format is crucial. Missing documents can lead to a visa refusal.

3. Purpose of Visit: The stated purpose of the visit must be clear, genuine, and well-documented.

4. Financial Stability: Applicants must demonstrate that they have sufficient financial resources to cover their stay in Slovenia without recourse to public funds.

5. Compliance with Visa Rules: Past compliance with Schengen or other visa rules influences the decision. A history of overstaying or illegal activity can result in a visa refusal.

How To Increase Your Chances of Visa Approval

While you cannot control all factors affecting the success rate, you can take steps to improve your chances of obtaining a Slovenian visa:

1. Start Early: Don’t wait until the last minute to start your application. Give yourself plenty of time to gather all necessary documents and complete the application accurately.

2. Follow Instructions: Each visa type has specific requirements and instructions. Make sure to read them carefully and follow them precisely.

3. Be Honest: Provide truthful and consistent information throughout your application. Any discrepancies can raise red flags and could lead to a visa refusal.

4. Seek Professional Advice: If you’re unsure about any aspect of your visa application, seek advice from a professional immigration consultant or attorney. They can guide you through the process and help you avoid common mistakes.

5. Prepare for the Interview: If you’re required to attend a visa interview, prepare thoroughly. Understand the purpose of your visit and be ready to answer questions about your personal, professional, and financial circumstances.

How To Appeal A Visa Rejection

If your visa application is rejected, you have the right to appeal the decision. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Understand the reason for rejection : The rejection letter will state the reasons why your application was denied.
  • Prepare your appeal : Write a letter stating why you believe the decision should be reconsidered. Provide additional supporting documents or evidence to address the reasons for the rejection.
  • Submit your appeal : Send your appeal letter and any additional documents to the embassy or consulate where you applied. The specific process may vary, so be sure to follow the instructions provided in your rejection letter.
  • Wait for the decision : After submitting your appeal, you’ll need to wait for the decision. The time it takes to process an appeal can vary. If your appeal is successful, the rejection will be overturned and your visa will be granted.

Remember, every visa application is unique, and the final decision rests with the visa authorities. Understanding the process and preparing thoroughly can greatly enhance your chances of success.

Slovenia Visa Interview Tips

The visa interview is a crucial step in the application process. Here are some tips to help you prepare:

  • Be punctual : Arrive early for your appointment to avoid any last-minute rush.
  • Dress appropriately : Present yourself in a professional manner.
  • Be honest : Always provide truthful and accurate information.
  • Be clear and concise : Answer the questions directly and keep your answers focused on the question asked.
  • Provide supporting documentation : Bring all your supporting documents and be ready to present them if asked.

Is the Fee Refunded if My Application Is Unsuccessful?
