Thailand visa for Malaysian citizens

Thailand tourist visa requirements for malaysian citizens.

Malaysian citizens can travel to Thailand for up to 15 days without needing to apply for a Thai visa.

However, for any visits longer than a 15-day period, it is necessary to apply for a Thailand visa.

Malaysian citizens must apply for a Thai visa through an embassy or consulate when they need a travel permit.

Find out about the different Thai visas for Malaysians available, and how to obtain them or travel to Thailand from Malaysia visa-free.

Thai Visas for Malaysian Nationals

Malaysians can enter Thailand visa-free for stays of up to 15 days by simply showing their passport and relevant health documents to the Thai immigration officers (more on this at the bottom of the page.)

Those who wish to stay longer need a visa.

The exact type of visa required for Malaysians depends on the amount of time they wish to spend in the country and the reason(s) for their travel, such as tourism, work, etc.

Here are some of the Thai visas available to Malaysian citizens :

  • Tourist visa
  • Education visa (also known as student visa)
  • Business visa
  • Retirement visa (only for individuals aged 50 or older)
  • Marriage visa
  • Dependent/guardian visa

Visa Requirements for Malaysian Citizens

The specific requirements depend on the type of visa one wants to apply for. Normally, applicants must:

  • Complete an application form
  • Provide copies of the necessary supporting documents and entry documents
  • Prove the reason(s) for their travel (usually with the supporting documents)
  • Pay a visa application fee
  • Abide by the local law for the entirety of their stay and respect the terms and conditions of the visa

A Thai embassy or consulate will be happy to help you identify the right visa for your circumstances and the requirements that apply to you.

How can I get a Thailand visa from Malaysia?

Thai visas for Malaysians must be applied for through a Thai embassy or consulate abroad. The application must be submitted in person.

Although the application process is different for each type of visa, applicants are usually required to follow the below steps :

  • Complete a visa application form
  • Gather the necessary supporting documents and submit them as part of the application
  • Pay the application fee
  • Return to the embassy to collect the approved visa

Some visas may require the applicant to also attend a visa interview at the embassy.

Visit Thailand from Malaysia with the Thailand Tourist Visa

The Thai tourist visa enables Malaysian citizens to stay in Thailand for up to 60 days .

It is intended for tourists only and cannot be used to enter Thailand for business or employment purposes.

The tourist visa can be extended in-person once already in Thailand. The visa extension can be requested at the Immigration Bureau in Bangkok and involves the payment of a fee.

Visa extensions are granted for a maximum of 15 further days, meaning that the traveler can stay in Thailand for a total of 90 days on their tourist visa.

Thailand Visa Application for Malaysian Citizens

As explained above, the specific application depends on the type of visa. However, nearly all Thai visas require travelers to fill out the application form .

This is a questionnaire that may include questions about :

  • The applicant’s personal information and contact details
  • The traveler’s passport
  • The reason(s) to travel to Thailand
  • The travel plans including accommodation while in Thailand
  • Previous trips to Thailand

All questions must be answered in full and with correct information. Failure to do so may result in the application being rejected.

Normally, short-term visas like tourist visas present fewer questions and fewer requirements to be met than long-term visas like work permits.

How to Get a Thai Visa in Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Thinking about getting your Thai tourist visa in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia? The Thai embassy in Kuala Lumpur is located just outside the KLCC city center.

It’s a fairly hassle free process, but if you already have many Thai visas in your passport it may not be as easy as other places (like Seoul ). I had just 1 other Thai visa in my passport when I applied in Kuala Lumpur and the employee really looked though my passport at every page to see if I had more visas. If you have more than a few Thai visas in your passport, they may ask for a copy of your transportation ticket, both in and out of Thailand (this also may depend on the employee at the time).

If you just have 1 or 2 Thai visas in your passport, or are applying for a Thai visa for the first time, getting a Thai visa in Kuala Lumpur is easy and straightforward.

Similar to getting a  Thai visa in Yangon , in Kuala Lumpur you are only permitted to apply for a single (1) entry tourist visa.

Note : These are just my observations, nothing official.

How to get a Thai visa in Kuala Lumpur

Here’s what you will need

  • 1 photocopy of your passport signed
  • 1 filled in visa application form (available at Thai embassy)
  • 1 passport photo 3.5 x 4.5 cm (I had heard you needed 2 – 3 photos, but when I got my Thai visa, they only took 1, so have 2 – 3 photos with you just in case)
  • 110 RM (you must pay in Malaysian currency, and you must have EXACT amount – they don’t give change)

The embassy officially opens at 9:30 am , but they open the outside gate at 9 am and you can go in and grab yourself a visa application form prior to the actual embassy opening.

Enter your email and I’ll send you the best travel food content.

I arrived at about 8:30 am and there was already a small line of about 10 people in front of me. They opened the gates at 9 am, I got my visa application and then waited in line while filling it out until 9:30 am.

When they open the doors, you get a number and then wait until your number is called to present all your documents and money.

I waited for about 15 minutes minutes or so and I was out of the embassy before 10 am. However, there was a quite a long line behind me, I’d imagine others had to wait around 30 minutes to an hour or even longer.

After applying, you’ll be handed a little receipt which you must present the next day to pick up your passport.

Passport Pick Up

While getting a Thai visa in Colombo takes 4 full business days, in Kuala Lumpur you conveniently pick up your passport the next business day!

Pick up time is from 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm each afternoon. It’s very easy, just show up, show your recipet and you’ll be give your passport and hopefully your new Thai visa.

I arrived at 2:45 pm to avoid the initial rush and didn’t have to wait at all.

How to get to the Thai Embassy in Kuala Lumpur

Take the LRT to Ampang Park Station , Exit to your right hand side and go up the escalator. Make an immediate u-turn and walk past the nice McDonalads. Walk straight, pass through the intersection and keep walking straight probably for about 1 kilometer. You’ll pass both the France and Spain Embassy and just after the VW dealership is the Thai Embassy on your left had side.

Alternatively you can jump in a taxi from wherever you are in the city.

Just an update. Not a good one 🙁 My bf tried today to get a visa at the Thai Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and they told him after looking a long time on the forms that they will call him in a week. They gave him all the papers back. He didn’t had to pay anything. Basically he got rejected. His passport is Turkish, he has only one Visa sticker inside. Not sure what the real problem was. He arrived yesterday in Malaysia, maybe he should have waited a couple days before heading to the embassy? However, we decided to go to Penang and try it there again. Fingers crossed it will work out.

' src=

Hey Sab, sorry about that, but thank you for the update.

Very helpful – thanks! My experience (April 2014) was exactly the same as yours.

One small thing to add: if you’re in a hurry, hang around on the steps near the doors after you get through the external gate, so you can be at the front of the queue for a number once they open the doors at 9.30.

Great to hear that Heather, thanks for sharing your tip!

' src=

Do they announce that applicants can receive the visa in the next day ?

Thanks and waiting for your response! [ Bangladesh]

Dear Michael, thanks for the information. Just wanted to check if you need other supporting documents besides the ones you mentioned. I’m Colombian but I’m working in KL, do you happen to know if I need to get an employment certifcate or any other additional documents?

Thanks in advance.

Intan Syufeena

Hi Mark. I would like to know if I plan to go to Chiang Mai in April this year, when should i apply for the visa? Please advice.

Hello Intan, it depends on which country you’re from? But it should be that as soon as you get your visa, you can enter the Thailand.

' src=

Hi Mark; I am so grateful for your concern I have one question: I’m from Sudan can i get Thai tourist visa from Kuala?

' src=

Hi! Wow, love the fact that you wrote this and I’m also very happy that Jon confirmed it’s still up to date. I’m in Thailand right now With my familly and we need to go to KL for a tourist visa. We only have the 30days we got when we arrived in Thailand from Sweden so we do not have any touristvisas that we applied for in our passports. Do you think it’s the same procedure for us (we have two kids). Can we get 60 days, you think?

' src=

Hi Mark Want to thank you very much for your help

Well I’m a Moroccan I’m going to fly from Tokyo to KL and I want it to apply for the Thai visa in Malaysia Do you think will be ok or not ?

Waiting your answre Frim waj

Hey Waj, good to hear form you. Yes, I think it will be alright, but you better double check with your nationality.

' src=

I’ll just chime in here and confirm that these instructions are up to date as I just went through the process.

The only thing is that the passport copy needs to be signed, mine did not. I did not bring one and they told me to go across the street (villa hotel?) to get a copy. Cost like 1 ringgit and I did not have to wait in line “again” as I still had my queue number attached to my application (they did that for me).

Anyway, good info.

Hey Jon, thank you for the update!

Great & usefull information.

My friend is a Malaysian who have been staying in Thailand as a monk for years and now his Visa is expiring soon. Since this is not his first time applying for a Thsi Visa. Is there any other documents required from him to apply for the Thai Visa?

Hey Patrick, I’m not so sure about the requirements for a Malaysian, I think it will be best to go over the official requirements on the Thai website. Thanks!

' src=

Hi and thanks for the great information. My question is do I need to bring a copy of the entire passport or just the photograph and essentail information page? Thanks!!

Thanks Michael, just your photo and visa page

Alfred pakistan have christians

Hi everyone, Why the blogger Mark Wiens have no answer for your Question, cool question though.

' src=

Hi, Mark Thanks for the post!!! Is there any additional paperwork for tourist visa? and do you need to apply online first before you go to KL embassy or just show up there… Im from Macedonia and last time i get my Thai visa from Dubai, but i apply online first to get a date for interview.

Hey Darko, for myself I just showed up and did the paperwork, no additional paper work, but you should probably check all the specifics for Macedonia. All the best!

' src=

Great site.

I love Thailand and will be coming back to stay for another few months.

Btw, how does the whole visa system work?

When your one visa runs out, you just find a Thailand embassy in any countries and apply for another visa?

Is that how it works?

Hey Alfred, good to hear you’ll be coming to live in Thailand again. Yup, basically that’s the process. I try to apply for 2 month double entry visas, and then I do a lot of traveling so I normally reapply for new Thai visas everytime I come back. Best of luck with everything!

' src=

Hi, im from Venezuela and i’d like to go to Thailand, can i get a Thai Visa in Kuala Lumpur? Or not? Thank’s for your help

Hello Hector. Are you wanting to staying in Thailand for a period of longer than a month? If so you can probably apply in KL, if not, just fly to Thailand and get a visa on arrival. Make sure to check your specific details though regarding your country’s requirements.

' src=

Hi, thanks for great post!

I wonder: a ‘signed’ passport copy is just a photocopy with my signature on it, or should I verify it in some way? Thanks!

Sorry for the late response Khodokov. Yes, that’s correct, just your signature on the paper is fine. Good luck with everything!

' src=

Just Curious – Did u get a multiple entry visa and what was the validity? Did they ask for return tickets/medical insurance?

Also I was browsing on the internet and they have a visa form you can download – saves u the hassle on waiting to pickup the form and filling up when lined up in a queue. Hope u don’t mind adding my 2 bits… Link: http://www.thaiembassy.org/kualalumpur/th/services/976

Finally a vote of thanks Mark – all your tips go a long way in making the best of your holiday – your efforts are well appreciated. Cheers.

Hey Ashok, thanks for the comment. No, wasn’t able to apply for a double entry in KL, they only allow single entries. For myself I did have a ticket into Thailand but not out of Thailand, and they actually didn’t even ask for it (though they might if you have many Thai visas in your passport already). Also I didn’t show any medical insurance.

Yes, you can definitely print out the form and fill it it beforehand.

Thanks for sharing!

Steph (@ 20 Years Hence)

Thanks so much for this post, Mark. I know that food blogging is your passion, but these visa posts are SO helpful for me! Initially we thought we would be entering Thailand via Laos, but now I think we may enter from the south via Malaysia, so finding out about getting visas there is crucial!

Hey Steph, glad to hear it’s helpful. Let me know if you have any other questions when you’re there. I know friends who have also gotten their Thai visa in Penang as well, so that’s another option.

' src=

Hi Mark – any idea if the Penang Embassy issues multiple-entry visas? Thanks so much.

Hey Jackie, not totally sure, but I have a friend there now, I’ll ask him.

Thailand Visa on Arrival

Securing a Visa on Arrival upon entering Thailand

The Visa On Arrival scheme allows passport holders of 19* listed countries and territories to enter Thailand without needing to apply for a Tourist Visa from a Thai Embassy in their own country.

To receive a Visa on Arrival, a traveler must meet the following requirements:

  • Be from an approved country.
  • Be visiting Thailand strictly for tourism purposes.
  • Hold a genuine passport with a valid expiry of more than 30 days.
  • Be able to list a valid accommodation address in Thailand that can be verified. This address can be a hotel or an apartment.
  • Must have a confirmed return ticket exiting Thailand within 15 days. Open tickets do not qualify. Traveling overland by train, bus, etc to Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia (including en route to Singapore), Myanmar, etc is not accepted as proof of exiting Thailand.**
  • Provide proof of funds of at least 10,000 THB for single travelers, or 20,000 THB per family during your stay in Thailand.
  • Pay a fee of 2,000 THB upon entry. This fee is subject to change without notice. It must be paid in cash and only Thai currency is accepted.

** You may be asked to show your flight ticket to Thai immigration officials on entering Thailand. If you do not possess a flight ticket to show that you will exit Thailand within 15 days (or 30 days) of entry, you will most likely be refused entry.

Visa on Arrival Required Documents

Required Documents

Here are the required documents for visitors who want to enter Thailand with Visa on Arrival:

The visa fee is 2,000 THB for a single entry and is to be paid in cash only. This fee is non-refundable.

You will be granted permission to enter Thailand if you qualify and complete the process list above. The Immigration bureau is responsible to ensure you meet all the requirements so best to be well prepared beforehand. The Visa on Arrival application process is very straightforward, and it can be accomplished quickly upon your arrival in Thailand.

People who are not eligible to enter Thailand under the Visa on Arrival scheme or Visa Exemption rule are required to obtain a visa through a Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate prior to their visit.

However, travellers often face difficulties in navigating visa processes, which can act as a barrier. But there is good news for those who love to explore. There are several countries around the world that Indian passport holders can visit without a visa.

Sri Lanka Extends Visa-Free Entry

Indians travelling to Sri Lanka can enter without a visa for a period of 31 days. The scheme was launched in October, aimed at attracting more tourists as Sri Lanka builds its economy back up after a serious financial crisis. Sri Lanka's decision to double the tourist visa fee from $50 to $100 for a 30-day visit has been reversed in a policy u-turn. The President's Office made this announcement on May 6 in response to concerns raised by regional tourism stakeholders and problems at important Bandaranaike International Airport entry points. In addition, the free visa service has been extended for citizens of Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, China, Russia, Japan, and India.

List Of Countries You Can Travel Visa-Free With An Indian Passport

1. Thailand

Thailand, a Southeast Asian gem famed for its stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and delicious cuisine, has been a longstanding favourite amongst Indian tourists. Recognising this, Thailand introduced a visa-free policy for Indian nationals in late 2023, allowing visits for up to 30 days. It recently announced extension of visa free entry till November 11, 2024.

2. Mauritius and Seychelles Islands

For those seeking island paradises, Mauritius and Seychelles offer an idyllic escape. Mauritius, with its pristine beaches, turquoise waters, and luxurious resorts, grants visa-free entry for up to 60 days to Indian visitors.

Seychelles, an archipelago known for its untouched beauty and diverse marine life, welcomes Indian travellers visa-free for up to 90 days.

While stunning coastlines are a major draw, the visa-free landscape extends beyond beaches. Nepal, a land steeped in rich Himalayan culture and adventure activities like trekking, requires no visa for Indian citizens, reflecting the deep cultural ties between the two countries.

Similar to Nepal, Bhutan's visa-free entry for Indians is based on close cultural and religious connections. In Bhutan, you can enjoy the diversity of culture, visit nature, and visit monasteries.

5. Indonesia

For those wanting a taste of Southeast Asian culture beyond Thailand, Indonesia offers a visa-on-arrival option for Indian tourists. This simplifies the entry process, making it easier to explore the country's diverse landscapes, from volcanic peaks to lush rainforests.

6. Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka, the latest addition to the list, has recently opened its doors to Indian passport holders to promote their tourism. This island is known for its magical beauty and has been referred to by different names, such as Serendib, Taprobane, the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, and Ceylon. Sri Lanka is famous for producing some of the finest tea, rubber, and coconut, as well as exotic spices.

7. Barbados

With white sands and blue skies, homemade drinks, and local souvenirs, Barbados welcomes you visa-free. A tranquil beach with white, powdery sand and clear turquoise waters is ideal for swimming and snorkelling. There are shipwreck explorations, turtle sightings, and a local eatery serving seafood nearby.

8. El Salvador

El Salvador is often referred to as the "Land of Volcanoes" due to its frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity. It is the only country in Central America that does not have a coastline on the Caribbean Sea.

Oman is renowned for its ancient aflaj oases irrigation system, terraced orchards in Jebel Akhdar, adobe fortresses, numerous mosques, wadis, or stream valleys, traditional Arabian sailing ships known as dhows, meteorites, and Al Said, which is the world's third-largest yacht owned by the Sultan.

If you enjoy the tales of the Arabian Nights and idealise this kind of vacation, then Qatar is the perfect destination for you. This beautiful country offers a range of exciting attractions, such as desert safaris, archaeological sites, forts, Banana Island, the Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum, and the Al Dhakira Mangroves. These are only a few of the many amazing places you can explore in Qatar.

Countries such as Malaysia, Vietnam, and Iran have started to offer visa-free travel on Indian passports.

Thailand extends visa exemption for Indian and Taiwanese tourists till November 11

Sun-seekers rejoice!  Thailand has extended its visa-free entry for tourists from India and Taiwan, making it easier than ever to explore the Land of Smiles. According to reports, Thai prime minister Srettha Thavisin announced the move, aiming to revitalise Thailand’s tourism industry, a crucial pillar of the nation’s economy.

Previously, visitors from these countries had a 15-day limit with a visa-on-arrival system. Now, they can enjoy extended stays of up to 30 days, visa-free, until November 11. This extended timeframe allows them to delve deeper into Thailand’s rich tapestry of cultural experiences, from bustling street food scenes to ancient temples and pristine beaches.

This decision builds upon the success of a similar program launched in November 2023. Recognising tourism’s vital role in its economic recovery, Thailand has been strategically relaxing visa regulations for visitors from key markets like China and Russia, stated sources.

So far, the strategy seems to be paying off. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports reported a significant surge in tourist arrivals during the first four months of 2024, with a 39 per cent increase compared to the same period last year. Interestingly, tourists from India, along with visitors from China, Malaysia, Russia, and South Korea, make up a significant portion of this influx.

For Indian travellers especially, Thailand holds a particular charm. Its geographical proximity and budget-friendly options make it an ideal getaway destination. Whether it’s indulging in mouthwatering street food, exploring historical wonders, or soaking up the sun on idyllic beaches, Thailand offers an unforgettable experience that keeps Indian tourists returning back for more.

Spurned by Schengen, Indians are being swayed by the lure of liberal visas

Thailand set the ball rolling in November, when it eliminated visa requirements for Indian travellers and permitted a 30-day stay until May this year. Last week, it extended this scheme till November this year.

NEW DELHI : Radhika Khanijo is busy planning vacations this summer for a few uber wealthy clients to a destination that hadn’t been on her luxury travel firm’s radar ever before: South Korea. The Asian country is suddenly on the map of Indian travellers, says the founder of Welgrow Travel, and part of the reason is its easy visa process.

“South Korea is seeing a big rise in travel demand from discerning travellers. We were never catering for travel to this country till last year," said Khanijo, also explaining why the visa process is a boon for last-minute planners. “There is no appointment procedure and clients can just submit their visas (online). Their visas take just seven working days to process, with low rejection rates."

Khanijo is also bundling in travel to Japan for one of her clients.

As trying to obtain Schengen visas to travel to European countries such as Greece, Italy and Switzerland became exasperating, Indians turned to more familiar destinations such as Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and Sri Lanka that have easier processes.

Thailand set the ball rolling in November, when it eliminated visa requirements for Indian travellers and permitted a 30-day stay until May this year. Last week, it extended this scheme till November this year.

Sri Lanka rolled out a similar scheme, offering visa-free access to Indians as well as nationals from six other countries till the end of May. Malaysia has declared visa-free entry for Indian and Chinese citizens till December.

“Surprisingly, many European nations that are in recession are putting visa restrictions instead of easing them up. Slowly Indian travellers are realising these issues and are opting to travel elsewhere," said  Subhash Goyal, chairman of STIC Travel, one of India’s largest travel agents.

The lure of liberal visas

The surge in outbound travel from India is emblematic of the country’s growing middle-class and the increase in their disposable incomes.

Outbound travel from India is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.4% between 2023 and 2032 to $44.8 billion, according to a report titled ‘Outbound Tourism in India’ by business advisory Nangia Andersen Llp. In 2022, the market stood at $15.16 billion.

India’s outbound tourism sector, one of the fastest-growing in Asia, has recuperated to about 61% of its pre-pandemic strength, with 13 million outbound tourists recorded in 2022, according to a report by McKinsey & Co. The consultancy firm estimates this figure could expand to 80 million by 2040.

For this year’s summer, Thailand, Mauritius, Maldives, Malaysia, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Vietnam have collectively registered a 30-40% increase in travel bookings by Indians as compared with a year earlier, according to travel agency Yatra Online Ltd.

Thailand and Sri Lanka have seen a 35% year-over-year increase in bookings for this year’s summer travel. Vietnam registered a 25% jump in bookings during April and May.

Bharatt Malik, senior vice president for flights and hotel business at Yatra Online, said Indian travellers are opting for destinations with simpler visa requirements and straightforward travel arrangements.

“A lot of the economies that have recently made visas free are dependent on tourism, and so have become very liberal with their visas, at least in the short run," said Goyal of STIC. “Indians, with their growing discretionary incomes, are now becoming more liberal spenders when travelling and shopping abroad."

The value-conscious traveller

MakeMyTrip registered a 33% year-on-year growth for bookings in April across newly minted visa-free destinations as well as countries allowing e-visas, such as Kazakhstan, Angola and Japan.

Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan are two major draws for Indian travellers this summer, followed by Georgia, Langkawi, and Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. Bhutan, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Kenya are among other favourites this summer, said a spokesperson for MakeMyTrip.

Destinations in Thailand such as Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai and Krabi remain a favourite, especially as the country has extended its no-visa scheme for Indians until November.

According to a spokesperson for travel agency Thomas Cook India, the elimination of the visa cost for Thailand, especially for an Indian family of four or ad hoc groups of friends or colleagues, is an important consideration for the value-conscious Indian.

Indian travel demand projected to rise as Thailand extends visa exemption

thailand tourist visa from malaysia

The Thai government’s decision to extend visa-free entry for Indian tourists by an additional six months is expected to lift arrival numbers from India.

First introduced last year and originally set to expire on May 10, 2024, the visa exemption will now remain in place until November 11.

Thailand’s prime minister Srettha Thavisin made the announcement following a cabinet meeting earlier this week. The programme allows Indian passport-holders to stay up to 30 days per visit to Thailand.

Naveen Nahar, director, Travelz Factorry, told TTG Asia that the initial announcement had led to a 15 per cent increase in enquiries for travel to Thailand.

“With this recent extension, interest (in Thailand) is expected to keep rising. This decision is also likely to attract first-time travellers to choose Thailand over others,” he added.

Indian airlines have responded with plans to boost frequencies on popular routes. IndiGo, for instance, will increase its flights between Delhi and Phuket from 7 to 14 per week starting June 1. Air India will introduce a second daily service on the Delhi-Phuket route, also commencing June 1.

“The demand for Thailand in India is growing for leisure, MICE and wedding verticals. We have also seen female groups from India travelling to Thailand for celebrations. Extending the visa exemption scheme, coupled with deals and offers for Indian travellers, will further help Thailand to penetrate the Indian market,” said Aditya Tyagi, founder, Luxe Escape.

Last year, Thailand welcomed 1.62 million visitors from India, making it the kingdom’s fourth largest market. Overall, Thailand recorded over 28 million tourist arrivals in 2023.

Visa-free travel extension can bring more Chinese nationals

United to boost tourism: (From left) Beh, Tan, Low and Chin.

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme is expected to gain popularity among Chinese nationals following the extension of visa-free travel between Malaysia and China, says a stakeholder.

Malaysia China Business Council director Datuk Beh Hang Kong said visitors from China have been drawn to Malaysia for its favourable climate, language familiarity and rich cultural heritage.“I’m sure demand for the MM2H will grow, especially with Malaysia’s close friendship with China that spans decades.

“The timely arrangement will boost various related sectors, creating opportunities for economic development and shared growth,” he said.

Beh said the announcement of the extension of visa-free travel to China for Malaysian citizens until the end of 2025 came at the perfect time, as both nations are celebrating their 50th anniversary of bilateral relations this year.

“This is an excellent turnout, and I think Malaysia will likely reciprocate with a similar arrangement soon,” he said in an interview on Wednesday.

Reflecting on last year’s initial implementation of the visa-free travel privilege, he said, the tourism sector in Malaysia has since witnessed significant improvements.

“Guided tours, necessitated by visa requirements in the past, have since shifted to a more flexible and personalised travel experience with visa-free requirements.“Travellers can now engage in detailed trip planning, including in-depth exploration and engagement with local culture and communities.

“This change is likely to boost various related sectors, including hotels, homestays and farm stays, creating opportunities for economic growth in smaller towns through enhanced promotion via social media and ecotourism initiatives,” he said.

The durian industry, with only a fraction of its potential currently tapped into China, also presents vast opportunities for market expansion, he said.

“Malaysia’s durians offer superior quality and taste; there is room for growth in our exports to China, offering a competitive edge over other producing countries in the region.

“We should not worry about competition; we just need proactive planning, leveraging our unique selling points, and enhancing engagement with consumers,” he said.

Beh, who is also the China-Malaysia Qinzhou Industrial Park deputy board chairman, called on tourism-related businesses and service providers to prepare themselves well to cater to an influx of Chinese visitors.

“This is the time to take action and expand based on our uniqueness, to attract more visitors.

“For example, durian orchard owners can offer farm stays and durian tours, while the local authorities should identify potential tourism products and have collaborations,” he said.

Malaysian Tourism Federation president Datuk Tan Kok Liang said the visa-free extension for Malaysians by China was more than just a mere convenience in terms of cost and time saved.

“It highlights that this initiative is aimed at enhancing the experience of tourists and making them feel more welcome in China.

“This is a positive step towards fostering exchange and collaboration between the two countries.”

Tan said a reciprocal response from Malaysia is crucial to maintaining a harmonious flow of tourists between the countries and preventing a potential decline in tourist numbers.

“The essential nature of tourism as a sector centres on delivering exceptional services and ensuring visitors feel welcomed and embraced.

“This will certainly boost tourism activities,” he added.

Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia president Tan Sri Low Kian Chuan said the government should negotiate to establish a permanent visa exemption policy with China.

“I am certain that Malaysian businesses and industries will benefit immensely from the permanent removal of travel barriers, especially the tourism and aviation industries.

“Malaysia and China must continue to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with China in the fields of tourism, people-to-people, educational and cultural exchanges,” he said.

Since Malaysia and China are celebrating their 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations, Low noted that the mutual visa waiver will be a catalyst to strengthen deeper human connections and unlock new opportunities for mutual benefits.

Meanwhile, SME Association of Malaysia secretary-general Chin Chee Seong said the tourism industry is expected to experience a significant boom, benefiting businesses in the travel and hospitality sectors.

“Hotels, restaurants, airlines, travel agencies, souvenir shops and transportation services can anticipate an increase in Chinese tourists visiting Malaysia,” he said. The retail industry, said Chin, was likely to see a surge in spending as more Chinese tourists arrive in Malaysia.

“Retailers can capitalise on this by offering a diverse range of goods, including luxury items and everyday necessities,” he said.

Chin noted that easier travel between Malaysia and China would facilitate more business interactions.

“Sectors such as manufacturing, import and export, and professional services stand to benefit from increased business opportunities. This could incentivise further investment and expansion in these sectors, leading to job creation and economic growth,” he said.

Lauding the visa-free travel, Chin said it is a positive development for Malaysia’s economy that fosters a more integrated economic relationship, benefiting businesses in both countries.

“This development can create new job opportunities, promote innovation and facilitate knowledge sharing between Malaysia and China,” he said.

Visa-free entry to bring more european tourists.

China decided last week to extend the short-stay visa-exemption policy for citizens of 12 countries, of which 11 are European nations, to the end of 2025. This extension underscores the prospects of China-Europe engagement in the years ahead and will bring a fresh wave of European tourists to China, analysts said.

The nation announced a visa-free policy for five European countries-France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain — from Dec 1 of last year to Nov 30 this year, with people from these countries allowed to stay on the mainland for up to 15 days for business, tourism, family trips or transit without a visa.

The visa-free policy was then extended to another six European countries: Switzerland, Ireland, Hungary, Austria, Belgium and Luxembourg, from March 14 to Nov 30 to further boost inbound tourism.

During his visit to France last week, President Xi Jinping said that China welcomes visits by more people from France, and will extend the short-stay visa-exemption policy for citizens from 12 countries, including France, to the end of 2025.

"The recent extension of both the time limit and the list of countries brings a positive outlook for the long run. It alleviates concerns among European stakeholders regarding the policy's duration," said Peng Han, chief analyst for tourism media company Travel Daily.

Travel Daily data shows that the total number of inbound tourists from visa-exempt countries in Southeast Asia such as Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand increased by about 2.5-fold year-on-year during the Labor Day holiday. In contrast, inbound tourism from Europe as of this year stood at only 30 percent of 2019 figures.

According to Peng, European operators typically formulate outbound tourism plans for the following year in June and July, and decisions on whether to engage with Chinese products hinge on whether they receive a clear answer in time.

"Will China's visa-free policy for European countries continue next year, or will it be discontinued? The industry has been keeping an eye on long-term China-Europe relations and the continuity of the visa policy," he said.

He added that now that China has given a clear answer on opening its door to Europe through successive policies, it signals to the world the promise of a prosperous future.

Although there has not been a sharp rise in the number of European tour groups coming to China till now, the number of independent travelers indicates the upside of the visa-free policy.

Ctrip data said that on March 14 alone, when the visa-free rules took effect, the number of inbound tourism orders from the six newly-added countries more than doubled compared with last year. The number of orders from Belgium, Hungary and Switzerland tripled.

According to data from tour operator Tongcheng Travel, flight bookings to China from European countries on the first visa-exemption list have shown remarkable growth. Since April, there has been a year-on-year increase of over 150 percent in bookings from France, a 110 percent increase from Germany, and nearly double the growth from Italy.

According to the National Immigration Administration, more than 170,000 international visitors entered China visa-free through Shanghai Pudong International Airport in the first quarter of this year, showing an increase of 23.6 percent year-on-year.

Shanghai, one of the top destinations for European tourists, has prepared itself for a surge in inbound tourism.

"The resumption of international flights, the visa-free policy, and the full recovery of business at Shanghai International Cruise Home Port will contribute to the number of inbound tourists arriving in Shanghai, especially free independent travelers," said Zhou Weihong, deputy general manager of Spring Tour, a travel company in Shanghai.

To accommodate the sudden increase of independent tourists after the implementation of the visa-free policy, tour agencies have designed personalized mini-tour products and city walks in Shanghai. They have also established tourism itineraries covering Shanghai, the Yangtze River Delta and other cities, Zhou said.

Voices from visitors

David Huang, a French national who studied at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, and who now works for a French chocolate company in Beijing, said that he has applied for both student and work visas in the past.

"The student visa requires at least two months of preparations, including submitting various documents. I also spent more than two months preparing for my work visa after graduating from UIBE.My French friends have heard about the visa-free access, and it is indeed a positive change," he said.

Young French travelers avoid countries that have lengthy visa application procedures, he said, adding that being on a limited budget, paying for airfare only to have a visa application rejected makes little financial sense for them.

"My colleagues in global companies find it much simpler to travel. When organizing events that require inviting foreign guests, we shouldn't have to worry about visa processing time. Two-week visa-free access allows people to explore business opportunities in China."

Laura Carbonell, a sales manager in Toledo, which is about 75 kilometers away from the Spanish capital Madrid, said she visited China in November before the visa-free policy was introduced. Even something like how far away an embassy or consulate is from a potential visa applicant's home can influence their travel decisions, she said.

"I really wanted to visit China to enjoy its culture and scenery. However, Spain has only two diplomatic missions, the embassy in Madrid and a consulate in Barcelona. People like me who reside in other cities are forced to travel long distances to apply for a visa."

For European countries not on the visa-free list, the application procedures have been streamlined. China has been simplifying its entry visa procedures worldwide, including canceling appointment requirements and fingerprints for qualified applicants temporarily. Visa fees for travel to China before December from all countries have also been cut by 25 percent, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Chinese embassy in Washington announced the simplification of the tourist visa application process for United States citizens starting from January 1 this year. US citizens can now enter China for tourism purpose without providing roundtrip air tickets, hotel reservations, itineraries and an invitation letter.

"From the implementation of the visa-free policy for six European countries to recent high-level meetings on optimizing inbound tourism payment services, the future looks promising," Peng of Travel Daily said. "The revival of inbound tourism to its previous peak may simply be a matter of time."

While China is sending clear signals of openness, political factors in the West are casting a shadow over cross-border travel. In March the US said it is "taking steps to impose new visa restrictions on multiple Hong Kong officials", without elaborating on the visa measures or the officials targeted.

Last July the US issued a travel warning against China, advising US citizens to "reconsider" whether to travel to the country for "the risk of wrongful detention". Furthermore, the US has long restricted visa applications for Chinese students for "national security" reasons.

The US narrative has had a significant impact on biased perceptions about China in Europe, the US and other countries, said tourism analysts.

"Our travel agencies agree that a trip to China is the best remedy. When European tourists actually visit China, most of them will revise their preconceptions," Peng said.

"With China opening its door, a firsthand experience will expose the falsehoods spread by some Western media."
