Star Trek: The Next Generation USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D Blueprints

  • View history

The blueprints answered many questions about the layout of the ship including locations of heads or toilets .

Background information [ ]

  • Sternbach later commented in response to the question why he did not do additional projects of this kind, " (...) the Ent-D plans were an 18 month grind, but fun. Would do the whole thing on the computer today, of course, but back then it wasn't completely possible due to hardware and storage limits. The simple reason I didn't do additional ships as deck plans is that I wasn't in control of what Pocket Books / Simon & Schuster chose to publish. You'd have to ask them. However, I can predict what they would say, citing market conditions not being favorable, increasing costs, previous sales not being so great, etc. You don't see any more tech manuals for just those reasons, though I would counter the lagging sales argument with the point that they might have seen better sales had they done any kind of promotion. Such are the battles between authors and publishers. The market today really is crappy, and it's only going to get worse, seeing what's happening with the loss of SF magazines and published SF in general. " [1] (X)
  • Nevertheless, Sternbach did follow up in this project on behalf of another publisher, the Japanese branch of De Agostini – and unlike Pocket Books, doing considerable "kind of promotion" at the time – , when he revisited and fine-tuned his blueprints for the ambitious 2011 The Official Star Trek The Next Generation: Build the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D -project. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen and unexpected external circumstances, that project died in its infancy.
  • At least one other (international) edition is known to exist, as a by Klaus Beck translated German-language version was released in 1999 by Heel Verlag .

Prepare To Board The U.S.S. Enterprise

uss enterprise star trek floor plan

If you’ve ever wanted to spend time aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC1701-D, your time has come. Star Trek: The Next Generation – On Board the U.S.S. Enterprise , a book and CD-ROM package from Carlton Books, sends fans on a virtual tour of the beloved TNG ship. Written by longtime Trek figures Denise and Michael Okuda, On Board the U.S.S. Enterprise boasts spreads and gatefolds with 3D features that illustrate the Enterprise from all angles, including a side-on cutaway diagram depicting the craft’s interior; a double-page spread chronicling the history of the Enterprise in illustrations and words; floor plans, artifacts and photos from TNG ; views of the ship’s bridge, showing main consoles, the captain’s chair and the functions that the consoles control; and living quarters, among them Picard’s suite, junior officers’ quarters and other spots fans will instantly recognize.

uss enterprise star trek floor plan

As noted, the On Board the U.S.S. Enterprise experience will be further enhanced by the inclusion of a CD-ROM that enables viewers to enjoy a detailed 3D tour of the Enterprise. The software for the CD-ROM was developed with the help of TNG ’s creators in order to most accurately reflect the show’s sets.

On Board the U.S.S. Enterprise is now available in the U.S. and releases April 25 in the United Kingdom.  Click HERE to purchase it in the U.S. and HERE to pre-order it in the U.K.

Forgotten Trek

The Galaxy Class Medical Deck That Wasn’t

For a ship that is supposed to carry a crew of one thousand, the Enterprise -D’s sickbay, with its four biobeds and one surgical theater, could hardly be the only medical facility on board.

Indeed, “Tapestry” reveals there are three sickbay wards. “Ethics” makes reference to private recovery rooms. Other episodes mention a diagnostics center, medical labs, a morgue and a nursery.

Some of these spaces were shown on screen. “Transfigurations” notably featured a separate biosupport unit and a physical rehabilitation bay. But — for budget reasons — no larger medical set was built.

“Remember Me” places sickbay on Deck 12. So does Rick Sternbach in the Star Trek: The Next Generation USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D Blueprints . His floor plan has two identical sickbays, called intensive care units, surrounded by larger recovery bays, isolation wards and dedicated treatment facilities.

What could have been

In 2005, we got a glimpse of what could have been when Andrew Probert, Sternbach’s predecessor on The Next Generation , designed a Galaxy -class medical deck for Perpetual Entertainment’s Star Trek Online .

Galaxy-class medical deck concept art

Probert sketched out an entire “Medical and Sciences Deck” with laboratories, offices and a mortuary.

Some of Probert’s designs were brought to live by Gareth John Williams. Two of his artworks are reproduced here.

Galaxy-class medical deck

I believe the sickbay complex on the Enterprise -D was located on Deck 12. This is always shown on the door signage for the show and all of the blueprints I’ve ever looked at.
I agree with deck 12. I am watching the episode “Starship Mine” and Beverly comes out of sickbay to talk with Picard and the transporter lift Picard enters after their brief chat is on Deck 12. Maybe there were other medical facilities on multiple levels of the ship. That could make since for different situations that may arise.
It’s on Deck 12.
You’re all correct, apologies for the typo!
Seeing this now… I’m surprised they never just went with a “hospital deck”.

The ambitious plan to build Star Trek's USS Enterprise

One adventurous engineer makes a compelling case to boldly build what no man has built before. Could the crazy thing actually work?

  • Newsletter sign up Newsletter

A model of the Starship Enterprise: The iconic Star Trek spaceship may take flight in the real world by 2032 if one determined engineer has his way.

If Elon Musk's space exploration company SpaceX is any indication, the future of space travel is in the hands of people with big imaginations. And nobody's vision is quite as ambitious as one engineer who has outlined an elaborate plan to build Star Trek 's USS Enterprise , which he says could be ready to fly within the next 20 years. "We have the technological reach to build the first generation of the spaceship... so let's do it," writes BTE Dan on his website, BuildTheEnterprise.org (which has been loading intermittently because of heavy traffic). The website includes conceptual blueprints, budgeting proposals, a timeline for research and development, and almost every other conceivable detail, raising the question: Could BTE Dan actually pull this crazy thing off? Here's what you should know about the engineer's sprawling vision:

Who is this guy?

He hasn't responded to any media queries, but BTE Dan (shorthand for "Build the Enterprise") says he is a systems and electrical engineer who has worked for a Fortune 500 company for the past 30 years. Little else is known about him — other than that he is a Star Trek fan and very, very thorough.

What's his plan?

He wants to build a fully working version of the iconic spacecraft by the year 2032. The proposal calls for a "full-sized, ion-powered version of the Enterprise complete with 1G of gravity on board," says Universe Today . The "Gen1," while not quite up to par with the fictional version envisioned for the year 2245 by Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, would utilize next-generation technologies already available today. The craft could pull triple duty as a spaceship, space station, and spaceport, capable of fitting thousands of space-goers onboard at a time for a configuration that's "quite functional," writes BTE Dan .

How would the starship work?

The Gen1 would run on nuclear power, and keep travelers' feet planted to the ground using a constantly rotating gravity-wheel to generate 1G of gravitational force. (Watch a demonstration of the concept below.) Three additional nuclear reactors would supply auxiliary power for things like lasers, which would allow the craft to sear through a prospective moon's icy crust and plop down safely in its oceans. The ship would be assembled in space, stretching 3,150 feet from front to back — that's longer than the height of two Empire State Buildings.

Could it zoom through space at warp speed?

Unfortunately, the ship "won't cruise the galaxy at light speed," says Popular Science , but it would allow us easy access to "new worlds right in our own neighborhood," namely Mars (which the ship would be able to zip to in just 90 days thanks to its ion-powered engines), Venus, and possibly Jupiter's ice-covered moon, Europa. BTE Dan envisions the USS Enterprise hopping "from planet to planet, dropping off robotic probes of all sorts en masse — rovers, special-built planes, and satellites."

Who would fund this?

The big if for the plan — with big being an understatement — "would be getting Congress to provide NASA the funding to do a huge 20-year project," says Universe Today , with estimates tallying close to $1 trillion. But BTE Dan has already done the math. His budget proposal includes tax increases and budget cuts to areas like discretionary spending and housing and urban development. These changes would "barely be noticed," he argues . In fact, according to his plan, a new USS Enterprise could be developed every 33 years, giving each new generation a starship of its own.

This sounds cool, but is it even worth entertaining?

"We need a far grander vision of what we should be doing to get humans up into space," says BTE Dan . "If we are going to ask taxpayers to pay billions of dollars for projects to put Americans into space, it should be for an idea that they can relate to and be inspired by." But "building directly from science fiction is not necessarily a good idea," says The Verge . Well I, for one, think we ought to "Make. It. So," says Jill Pantozzi at The Mary Sue . "We should not be done going boldly where no one has gone before."

Star Trek Has Finally Revealed the Evil Enterprise's Weird Fate

Watch out for any goatees.

uss enterprise star trek floor plan

Today, everyone knows what a multiverse is. But back in 1967, parallel universe stories weren’t nearly as common as they are now, even within the sci-fi genre. A classic Star Trek episode, Jerome Bixby’s “Mirror, Mirror,” helped popularize the alternate universe trope, complete with meaner versions of yourself who may rock an evil little goatee like Mirror Spock.

Star Trek’s Mirror Universe also gave us an alternate version of the USS Enterprise in the ISS Enterprise , a ship that served the Imperial Terran Empire, not the United Federation of Planets. Now, in the Discovery Season 5 episode “Mirrors,” the evil ISS Enterprise is back... as a force for good. Here’s what it all means. Spoilers ahead.

The ISS Enterprise returns

Burnham looks at the ISS Enterprise in 'Discovery' Season 5

Captain Burnham watches the ISS Enterprise warp to Federation HQ.

While pursuing the thieves Moll and L’ak, Book and Burnham take a shuttlecraft into an unstable wormhole and discover the floating, pseudo-derelict ISS Enterprise . One of the clues to the Progenitor’s tech has been hidden on it, but for Burnham, it’s kind of like a bizzaro universe homecoming. Burnham spent a decent amount of time in the Mirror Universe in Discovery Season 1 , and in Season 2 she found herself on the Enterprise with her brother Spock just before jumping from the 23rd century to the 32nd century.

In “Mirrors,” Burnham notes that “crossing between universes has been impossible for centuries,” which means the ISS Enterprise must have crossed over into the Prime Universe well before the 32nd century. Burnham is referencing the events of Discovery Season 3, when we learned that Philippa Georgiou, a resident of the Mirror Universe, couldn’t go back to her home universe because those dimensions had drifted apart. But the ISS Enterprise , which was previously captained by an evil Kirk, crossed over into the Prime Universe well before that moment, and Discovery has now added details connecting The Original Series, Deep Space Nine , and Discovery Season 3.

How evil Spock became good

Mirror Spock talks to Kirk in the 'Star Trek' episode "Mirror, Mirror.'

Spock talking with Kirk in “Mirror, Mirror.”

In the Deep Space Nine episode “Crossover” we learn that after Kirk talked to Mirror Spock and encouraged him to try making the Terran Empire a peaceful power, Mirror Spock did just that. But as Mirror Kira explained, Mirror Spock’s idealism didn’t work out the way he’d hoped:

“Spock rose to Commander in Chief of the Empire by preaching reforms, disarmament, peace. It was quite a remarkable turnabout for his people. Unfortunately for them, when Spock had completed all these reforms, his empire was no longer in any position to defend itself against us [the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance].”

Discovery appears to be referencing this exact event, even if Spock isn’t named outright. When Book learns the ISS Enterprise became a refugee ship for people who’d turned against the Empire, he says, “The Terran High Chancellor was killed for trying to make reforms.”

This likely references Spock, but adds the twist that he was perhaps betrayed by other people within the Terran Empire, even if Earth adopted his reforms. Now, by the end of “Mirrors,” the 23rd-century ISS Enterprise has been moved to the Prime Universe and the 32nd century. It’s an antique by modern standards, but it’s a contemporary of the USS Discovery, so it’s still serviceable. This means that by the end of Discovery Season 5 there will still be a version of the classic Enterprise floating around Federation headquarters, so when the Starfleet Academy series debuts, 32nd-century Starfleet cadets will have access to the classic version of the most famous Enterprise. It may technically be an evil twin, but its historic adventures aren’t over just yet.
