The area is rich in both historical significance and religious significance. It a place that draws in scholars, religious pilgrims and tourists on holiday that want to experience this ancient city first hand.

The Western Wall is in Old Jerusalem . Jerusalem was originally founded as the City of David in 1010 BCE , but according to archaeological evidence the area may have been settled and inhabited as early as 4500 BCE .

This ancient city is rich with cultural importance, ancient history, archeological sites, religious importance and world-renowned artifacts including the Western Wall.

Webcam of Western Wall (Western Wall, Kotel) in Jerusalem, Israel (Second Cam)

Jerusalem is a walled city , but none of the walls of the city get the attention that the Western Wall does. The city is home to over 300 Jewish Synagogues, 33 Mosques and 50 Christian Churches .

The museums in the area are home to some of the oldest biblical texts in the world. There are over 50 museums in Jerusalem. Many people come specifically to see the Western Wall and take advantage of all the other historically significant places through out Jerusalem.

The Western Wall is sometimes referred to as the “ Wailing Wall ” by the Christians or the “ Kotel ” in Yiddish or the “ Buraq Wall ” to Islam is an ancient structure ; one of the last remaining walls of the exterior structure of an ancient temple in Jerusalem.

Our Kotel cam lets you visit the world-famous Western Wall in Jerusalem right from the comfort of your home. Our Western Wall live cam gives you the opportunity to see this historic site and watch as people come and go.

The Western Wall is rich in history. It is 488m long and originally measured 60 m high, today it stands about 40m highs. While only a small section of the wall is heralded as being holiest of the holy, the entire wall is a place of bustling activities .

It is considered a holy place by both Jews and Christians and by the millions that visit the wall annually. The original temple that stood on the spot was destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE . The site is historically relevant. This section of wall is the exterior wall of the temple and not a wall that held up the temple.

It encases the Temple Mount and was built by Herod the Great . Herod the Great built a promenade around the Temple Mount, the Western Wall is part of that promenade but is largely all that remains of the ancient structure surrounding the temples .

It is part of a much longer wall that is connected but not revered as much. The Muslims believe that this is the spot where Mohammad tied his horse before ascending into heaven. His horse was named Buraq hence the name the Buraq wall in Islam.

There are 4 remaining structural walls of the outer temple area, but the western wall is considered the closest to the Temple Mount therefore the most holy space for Jews.

Webcam view from the Western Wall Tunnels

The pilgrimage to the wall began during Roman rule when the Jews were not permitted into Jerusalem except on Tisha be-Av (the day of mourning for the loss of the temples).

It was not until the 1600’s when the Western Wall really grew in significance to the Jewish community and a symbol of the suffering of the people.

The wall today faces a large square in the middle of Old Jerusalem. The square sets aside areas to pray to visitors. On many Jewish holidays and holy days of obligation, the square can be packed with pilgrims that vie to stand close to the wall and lament the loss of the temples and the struggle that ensued the people of Israel .

Many people that visit the wall leave notes tucked in the stone addressed to God and pray fervently that the temple will return to the spot . There are over one million note s collected annually by keepers of the wall. The notes are collected and buried.

The site of the wall is so overwhelming to many Jewish people that they find themselves weeping as they pray hence the term the “ Wailing Wall ” coined by Christians that witnessed the fervor and the wailing.

It is a moving experience to visit a spot that is so historically significant to one of the largest religious organizations in the wall. Jews come to the site to mourn the loss of the temples. It is a very touching site to see such true believers’ centuries later lament over their lost temples .

Men and women are separated at the wall, there is a section for men and a section for women.

The “ Western Wall ” has always been a symbol of the strife in the region. Up until 1967 , the wall was often part of the struggle of who would occupy the region.

The symbolic “ winning of the wall ” between opposing sides of various disputes and wars was always a critical gain for whichever side “won” it. Jerusalem has been conquered over forty times since written historical records have been kept and the area has had 100 wars fought in the area.

The fact that the Western Wall is still standing after centuries of wars , is a fact that is not lost on true believers . Jews believe that the wall survives because God wants it to.

Under Israeli governance the wall is protected fiercely as a national treasure and a sacred place that takes priority when it comes to defense.

The wall has its own committee that ensures that it will never come under harm. There are security checkpoints that include metal detectors that visitors must go through before reaching the wall.

There are customs that visitors to the wall should abide by.

Shoulders to the knee need to be covered to enter the sacred area. While all nationalities and religions are welcome to the wall area , you do have to be dressed conservatively to be admitted to the area.

Men should have their heads covered, there is a yarmulkes booth outside that you can get head gear at.

While it is not required it is a sign of respect to never turn your back on the wall. You walk backwards away from the wall. It is also a good idea to keep things quiet when you are near the wall. This is a very holy and solemn place to many people.

The Jerusalem live cam lets you witness the events at the wall that are simply intriguing.

Population: Jerusalem is currently home to approximately 855 thousand people .

Main Attractions: The Wall and other historic ancient sites.

The Kotel (The Western Wall)

June 23rd 2011

Jerusalem Old City - KOTEL - HUGE RES

Visitors to the Holy Land usually start with a trip to the Kotel, also known as the Wailing Wall or Western Wall. The Kotel is the last remaining wall of the Temple Mount, upon which the Jewish Temple stood in antiquity. Since the Temple Mount itself is mostly off-limits to Jews, the Kotel is considered the holiest site in Judaism.

The Kotel is essentially a large outdoor synagogue. A long mechitza barrier separates the men’s section from the women’s section. Prayers take place all day, both via formal prayer groups and individuals making time to speak to God.

The Kotel

Due to the holiness of the site, it is customary to write requests and prayers on notes which are placed in between the big, heavy

stones. Once a year, before Passover, the notes are removed and buried in the ground. New visitors refill the cracks with more hopes and wishes.

Modest dress is required at the Kotel. Men will be asked to put on yarmulkes, and women should come with sleeves and long skirts. Prayer books are available but if you come at a busy time, it may be hard to get one.

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting the Western Wall in Jerusalem

jerusalem Hasdic Jewish men at Western Wall

The Western Wall, (Wailing Wall or Kotel), stands as one of the most iconic and revered sites in the world. Located in Jerusalem’s Old City, this ancient limestone wall is the last remaining remnant of the four supporting walls that surrounded the Second Temple on Temple Mount. The Temple was destroyed in 70AD, and only this wall remains. As such, it is a site of profound religious and historical significance for Jews worldwide.

Since the destruction of the Temple, the Western Wall has been a source of inspiration and a site that keeps the memory of the Temple alive. The Kotel is always included in tours of Jerusalem and should be seen whether you are a pilgrim, a history enthusiast, or a curious traveler.  Here is all you need to know before visiting the Western Wall.

jerusalem Western Wall

Western Wall Basics

Open Hours: 24/7

Location: The Western Wall is within the Old City of Jerusalem. The closest gate to the wall is the Dung Gate and from there it is just a few meters away.

Facilities: There is a parking lot near the Kotel but it is rare to find a parking space in this area. If you have to come by car then try finding a parking spot by the Zion Gate, and walk from there. Otherwise, use public transport. In the Western Wall Plaza there are public toilets.

Time Required for a visit: 15 minutes to 1 hour depending on how much time you wish to spend there. :

Wall Dimensions: 488-meters long, 40-meters high. There are 28 rows of stones above ground, and most of the massive stones are from the original Temple. The wall extends below ground level and part of it has been excavated and can be seen in the Western Wall Tunnels.

What to Expect at the Western Wall

The Western Wall faces a large plaza where you’ll see people standing around, taking photos, chatting, or just looking at the wall. As you come closer to the wall you’ll see that the wall is divided into two sections, one for women and one for men. In the past there has been a small section set aside for mixed-gender, egalitarian prayer. But this section (called Ezrat Israel) is often closed. Approach the wall on the appropriate side, and walk straight up the wall. There are a few chairs where you can sit, or you can go directly to the wall and touch it. Then, if you have a piece of paper and a pen on you you can write a prayer note, and place it in the crevices of the wall. Most of the religious Jews visiting the wall will be praying, but there are also plenty of non-religious Jews, and gentiles who come to touch and see the wall. When you leave the area close to the Kotel it is customary to take a few steps backward, before turning your back on the wall.

The Western Wall

Accepted Behavior When Visiting the Western Wall

When visiting the Western Wall, it is important to dress respectfully, as it is a place of worship and deep spiritual significance. The dress code is relatively straightforward, both men and women should dress modestly. Women are expected to cover their shoulders and not show cleavage. Either wear a skirt or dress that covers the knees, or you can wear long pants. Don’t visit the Western Wall in shorts or short skirts. Men should avoid wearing sleeveless shirts and shorts. It is customary for men to wear a kippah (skullcap) while at the Western Wall. If you do not have one, they are often available for visitors to use at the entrance. Women can cover their heads but many do not.

Quiet and Respectful Behavior

Maintain a respectful and quiet demeanor while at the Western Wall. This is a place of prayer and reflection for many, so it’s essential to be considerate of those who are engaged in worship. You can take photos, but don’t get in anyone’s face, and try to do it discreetly without disturbing anyone who is praying. Eating in the area immediately in front of the Western Wall is not allowed.

Special Times to Visit the Western Wall

While the Western Wall is open to visitors throughout the year, there are certain times when the experience can be especially meaningful or unique. If you visit on Sabbath (Friday evening and Saturday until sundown) you will see locals coming to the Kotel for the Shabbat prayer services. This is a moving experience, with families gathered to welcome the day of rest. Arrive before sundown on Friday to witness the lively Kabbalat Shabbat prayers.

Similarly, on Jewish holidays like Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Passover, and Sukkot there are special services at the Western Wall. These times offer a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich traditions and fervent atmosphere.

On Mondays and Thursdays you can often see families at the Western Wall celebrating their child’s Bar or Bat Mitzvahs: The Bar or Bat Mitzvah ceremony at the Western Wall is a touching experience and is often accompanied by music.

Jerusalem Day is celebrated in late May or early June, and commemorates the reunification of Jerusalem in 1967. The Western Wall Plaza hosts various events and celebrations on this day.

The Western Wall Tunnels:

To deepen your understanding of the Western Wall’s historical significance, don’t miss the chance to explore the Western Wall Tunnels. These underground passageways offer a fascinating journey through time. The tunnels reveal the foundations of the Second Temple, including massive stone blocks, ancient streets, and ritual baths, providing insights into daily life during the time of the Temple. Visitors can walk alongside the Western Wall’s massive stones below ground level, coming closer to the holiest part of the site.

To fully appreciate the significance of the Western Wall Tunnels, it’s advisable to join a guided tour. Knowledgeable guides share historical and archaeological insights, making the experience even more enriching. The entrance to the Western Wall Tunnels is from the Western Wall Plaza, and tickets should be booked in advance online.

Jerusalem’s Top Attraction

When discussing Jerusalem’s top attractions the Western Wall is usually among the top three. It really should not be missed, no matter what religion you are. A visit to the Western Wall in Jerusalem is a profound and memorable experience and will leave an indelible mark on your heart and soul.

Minharot Hakotel

When I recommend a visit to the Kotel Tunnels, I know what I am talking about. My co-editor of Israelandyou was a guide there for several years. I keep returning to visit the tunnels because of the the feeling I have of tracing the footsteps of my priestly Kohanim forefathers crossing the arch to offer sacrifices in Herod’s Temple. You can experience this yourselves. The tour of the Kotel Tunnels ( or Western Wall Tunnels) is one of the most popular tourist sites in Jerusalem. The tunnels are underground and  connect the western wall prayer area to the north-west side of the temple mount, passing along the side of the temple mount and under the present day houses in the Old City. Along its path are remains from the second temple period (Hasmonean and Herodian), as well as structures from later periods. Walking along the tunnels is a tremendous experience like taking a time machine back to the time of the second temple.

The area west of the temple mount connected the temple to the the western side of Jerusalem d uring the second temple period – from the Hasmonean period (2nd C BC) up to the Roman destruction of Jerusalem (70AD). There were four gates located on this side – two gates at a lower level (Barcley and Warren) and two gates on top of bridges (Robinson and Wilson) . A paved street passed at the foot of the temple mount, and additional structures and installations were located at that street level.

After two millenniums, new buildings were built on top of  debris accumulated along the western side f ollowing the Roman destruction . However, under these structures, some cavities remained buried deep underground.

British researchers Charles Wilson, in 1864 and Charles Warren, in 1867-1870, uncovered the northern extension of the Western Wall Prayer Plaza. The shafts that Charles Warren dug through Wilson’s Arch can still be seen today.

Immediately after the Six Day War, the Ministry of Religious Affairs began the project of exposing the entire length of the Western Wall. They found enormous courses of distinctively carved stone that were remarkably well preserved. There were also remains of the Herodian road which ran alongside the Temple Mount, ancient cisterns, impressive construction efforts from the Muslim era, and a Hasmonean period aqueduct that had been blocked by Herod’s construction of the Western Wall.

The southern most part of the Kotel is within the Davidson Museum. To the north an open air area is reserved for women. Further north another open air area is reserved for men. A prayer tunnel was excavated uner Wilson’s Arch north of the Kotel and is open to the public, men and women alike, and no entrance fee is required. You can see Wilson’s Arch in the photo below.

Kotel

The tourist site was fully opened in 1996, with 500m long tunnel along the north-western wall. The route of the tunnel tour starts from the entrance on the north side of the  western wall prayer area, and ends at Station No. 1 of the Via Dolorosa. Since there is a limit in the number of visitors that can join a tour, an appointment should be made well in advance.

(a)  Secret passage

The Secret Passage

During the Roman period, one of the western entrances to the temple mount was over a bridge which is now called the Wilson arch, which is located on the north side of the Western Wall prayer area. It is described by Josephus on several occasions: the description of the attack by Pompey in 63BC (Wars 1 7 2): “Aristobulus’s party was worsted, and retired into the temple, and cut off the communication between the temple and the city, by breaking down the bridge that joined them together”. The bridge was destroyed during Titus’s attack in 70AD (Wars 6, 6 2): “…a bridge that connected the upper city to the temple”. It was later repaired by the Romans in the 2nd or 3rd C after may have established a Roman temple Jupiter on the temple mount.    The bridge was repaired in the 7th C by the Arab rulers, who connected the west side of the city to the temple mount for easier access to their new Al-Aqsa and Dome of the Rock mosques. The present day Chain street (Silsila) actually passes on its upper side. The cavity below the street was termed “the secret passage” in the middle ages. It stretches along 70m – from the Hagai (Al-Wad) street on the west to the temple mount on the east. This “secret passage” serves today as the entrance to the underground tour.

(b) Second Temple period stairs

Second Temple Stairs

The area around the “secret passage” is still undergoing excavations. The archaeologists revealed second temple period stairs and other ancient findings.

(c) Large Hall and Model

IMG_6599

North to the Wilson arch and bridge is a large underground cavity called the “large hall”. Its high ceiling allows a great view of the hidden western wall. A model of the second temple is located on the west side of the hall, in front of a set of benches. This area is temporarily closed.  The tour guide describes the story of the temple mount with the assistance of the model, which uses the electrical controlled mechanism to demonstrate the phases of its construction by Herod.

(d) Western Wall – section

On the eastern side of the great hall are remains of the lower side of the Herodian Western wall. The base stones are incredibly huge – the largest one – seen below – is 14m wide and 4m high, and weighs 600Tons!

largest stone in western wall

There is no cement holding the stones together; only their weight and the perfect match between the stones made them hold firmly together. Each layer of rock recedes several centimeters to help withstand the enormous pressure of the temple mount over two millenniums. The rectangular holes in the stone were added in the middle ages. Their purpose was to hold the plaster which was applied onto the walls, when this section was transformed into a water reservoir.

(e) Warren’s gate (facing the Holy of Holies)

This underground gate, unfortunately now sealed, is located 40m north of the Wilson arch. Warren’s Gate is now underground, but it was at ground level when built by Herod the Great. You can see the wall sealing the gate in the photo. The entrance here is located at the bottom of the temple mount ancient walls, at a depth which was the street level during the second temple period.    The opening of this gate  faces the Holy of Holies structure and the foundation stone, and therefore is considered  the holiest gate. It was discovered in 1867 by Charles Warren.

 (f) Opposite the Foundation stone

The foundation stone (Hebrew: Even Ha-Shtiya,  from the word “Tashtit”), also known as “The Rock” (Hebrew: Ha-Sela), was the heart of the Holy of Holies. According to Jewish tradition, the rock marks the center point of God’s dwelling and the creation of the world and the site of Isaac’s Sacrifice.  Some traditions and archaeologists locate it in the center of the Dome of the Rock, which is located beyond the wall, although there are other suggested locations around the temple mount.  The Jewish women come to pray here in the niche of the “opposite foundation stone”, or in other locations along the wall.

(g) Medieval Cistern

Along the western wall is a medieval period cistern.

(h) Western Wall tunnel

During the excavations and preparation of the western wall tunnel tour (1980s and 1990s), a modern tunnel was constructed along the base of the wall (several dozens of meters long) at the Roman street level. It supports the old city structures above it, which were built above the Roman street level during the Medieval periods.  A large number of  large stones were found laying around the Roman paved street. They were thrown from the temple above into the street by the Roman soldiers, during the leveling of Jerusalem, after it was captured and burnt. This evidence of destruction was also found in the South-West Wall excavations.

(i) Dressed Bedrock Begins –  Kotel Tunnels

On the north side of the temple mount, the builders of the temple mount had to cut away the bedrock. The original topography of the Moriah mountain on the north-west corner was higher than the temple mount, and so the engineers had to remove some of the rock in order to expand the temple mount during the Herodian period expansion. The side of the exposed rock was chiseled and dressed to look like the pillars on the south side.

Temple Mount bedrock

(j) Hasmonean Cistern

The western section of a Hasmonean period cistern was located at this section.

 (k) Ancient Guardrail

A large stone was found that served as a guardrail on the edge of the ancient street. It protected the people from falling into the open trench, which was used to collect rain water from the street.

Ancient guardrail and street

(l) Second Temple period street

The Roman street  stretched along the western wall, from the north to the south.  A section of a second temple period (Herodian) paved street was found in this section.   Only a small section of the street was uncovered.A pair of columns, part of the colonnaded street, are seen on the edge of the street. As in the Cardo Maximus street, shops were located along the street along the side of the wall.

The section near the Herodian street was part of a stone quarry, which prepared stones for the western wall.

Quarry

  (n) Hasmonean Water Tunnel

The tunnel traverses the path of a Hasmonean period aqueduct. It supplied water from the north side of the city, filling up the cisterns under the Hasmonean citadel, Antonia, which was located on the north side of the temple mount. The water channel was cut off during the Herodian period when the temple mount was enlarged to the north.

Hasmonean Cistern

(o) Ancient Pool – Kotel Tunnels

At the northern edge of the tour is an ancient water reservoir called the Struthion Pool. The meaning of the Latin word is “sparrow”. This large reservoir collects the winter rain water from the rooftops in order to supply water during the dry summer season. Initially it was an open pool, built by the Hasmoneans, and mentioned by Josephus in his accords of the siege of Jerusalem (Wars 5 11 4 ): “For there were now four great banks raised, one of which was at the tower Antonia; this was raised by the fifth legion, over against the middle of that pool which was called Struthius”.    The pool was later covered by the Romans in the 2nd C.The Struthion pool is located at the basement of the Notre Dame De Sion (Ecce Homo) monastery. The initial plan of the tunnel tour was to exit through the monastery, but this was not accepted by the order. Alternatively, the exit of the tour was diverted to a modern opening through the pool, located near the first station of Via Dolorosa.

Pool

Israel Travel Secrets

Kotel Pictures

Kotel Pictures

Kotel Pictures – One of the most visited sites in Israel is the Western Wall, also known as the Wailing Wall and the Kotel. It is always a hive of activity, with tourists and locals, religious and non-religious, Jews and non-Jews coming together to see, to pray, to photograph, to stand in awe of and to just be present at the most significant site in the world for the Jewish people. The Western Wall’s proximity to the original location of the Holy of Holies – the core and heart of the First and Second Temple is what makes this site spiritually and historically the holyiest site in the Jewish heritage.

Swearing in ceremony for the Golani fighter unit.

It also the most photographed and recognized site world wide and visited by millions each year. Bar and Batmizvah children from around the globe choose to celebrate this special event right here with their families and friends.

Thousands of soldiers serving in the Israel Defence Forces each year swear their loyalty and allegiance to their nation and homeland at the Kotel Plaza right in front of the Western Wall (my own daughter was sworn into the Israel Air Force Defense Unit in 2013).

All of the pictures that you see on this page have been taken by a family member Seth Berman, when he visit in June 2013 for a family barmiztvah.

Seth (owner of Rapid Shutter Photography) is also part of our Facebook ‘world’ community – in fact he’s the first to agree to share his amazing photos of ‘ Israel though his eyes ‘ with Israel Travel Secrets.

I love all of Seth’s pictures, but I particularly love the image of the young boy being taught how to put on his ‘Tefillin’ (also called phylacteries – a set of small black leather boxes containing scrolls of parchment inscribed with verses from the Torah)

Kotel Tunnel and Old City Tour: Jerusalem

by Sarah Einhorn | Sep 23, 2017 | 0 comments

For years Pesach Levy was the brand name for tours of the Kotel Tunnel and the Jewish Quarter of the Old City. A couple of years ago, I joined a tour run by him and his son Yitzchak. By now Pesach Levy has retired, but his son Yitzchak runs the Kotel Tunnel and Old City Tour with his father’s special touch injected.

It is fascinating to learn how little of the Kotel wall we actually see. Most of it is underground. The Shaar Shechem and houses nearby are built on top of the wall. The arches in the tunnel below the Kotel are very interesting. The largest stone, about 25 feet long, can be seen there, too.

The tour continues to the Jewish Quarter of the Old City. There are a few old synagogues with interesting history. Rabbi Levy expounds on the stories behind each of the Synagogues. Each one is unique with its own distinctive story. Some of the Synagogues visited are the The Ohr Hachaim Synagogue, The Nisan Bak Synagogue, The Ari Synagogue, The Tzemach Tzedeck Synagogue, The Rambam Synagogue, The Churva Synagogue.

The Kotel Tunnel Tour and Old City Tour can help you understand the history of the Jewish people on a whole new level.

Western Wall/Western Wall tunnels

kotel travel israel

The Western Wall (or Kotel, in Hebrew) was part of the most magnificent building Jerusalem had ever seen, which was the Second Temple, built by King Herod the Great

The Second Temple was destroyed in the year 70 CE and despite the destruction that took place, all four of the Temple Mount supporting walls remained standing.  Throughout the generations since the Temple’s destruction, the Western Wall was the remnant closest to the site of the Temple’s ‘holies of holies - a place where only the Jewish High Priests were allowed, as it was there they believed God was present.  The actual remains of the Temple can be found in the Western Wall Tunnels, which are an extraordinary journey through time.

For centuries Jewish and Christian people from around the world have been going there to mourn the loss of this grand temple. You will often find hundreds of people of different nationalities and religions pouring out their hearts with prayer and petition as the wall is believed to have enormous spiritual significance.

It is tradition for the people that visit to write a note and place it in the cracks of the Western Wall, as it is believed the message will be taken to God. You will often find doves resting in the crevices of this impressive structure, which are a symbol of peace.

FROM THE SCRIPTURES

“I love You, O LORD, my strength.” The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, And I am saved from my enemies. The cords of death encompassed me, And the torrents of ungodliness terrified me. The cords of Sheol surrounded me; The snares of death confronted me. In my distress I called upon the LORD, And cried to my God for help; He heard my voice out of His temple, And my cry for help before Him came into His ears (Psalm 18:1-6 ESV).

Jesus left the temple and was going away, when his disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple. But he answered them, “You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down” (Matthew 24:1-2 ESV).

The Western Wall in Jerusalem

The Western Wall in Jerusalem is the holiest site for Jews. For thousands of years, Jews dreamed of standing at this place and praying. The Kotel, or Western Wall, is the western retaining wall of the Temple Mount, on which the two Temples stood.  Since the destruction of the Second Temple by the Romans in 70 A.D. the southern part of the Wall was covered with rubble and remained hidden until 1867, when archaeological excavations began there. “Robinson’s Arch” is located at the southern end of the Western Wall.

During the time of Herod, the arch served as an ancient overhead entrance. It enabled entrance to the Temple Mount, as well as providing access to the Cardo, the ancient Roman street located below. The Cardo served as a central axis for trade and the movement of pilgrims to Jerusalem. Today, the arch is part of the archeological site situated near the platform known as “Ezrat Yisrael”, which is open to all Jews who wish to pray or read from the Torah in an egalitarian setting.

Masorti runs and maintains the prayer space at “Ezrat Yisrael” making it possible to hold egalitarian prayer services and Bar or Bat Mitzvah ceremonies with the entire family.

Currently, the prayer area consists of two temporary platforms.  The Masorti Movement provides prayer books and Torah scrolls free of charge.  The scrolls and prayer books are stored in a special holy ark located on the site.

The Masorti Movement gained access, in the year 2000, to conduct egalitarian prayer services for both men and women in the tradition and spirit of the Masorti Movement following a prolonged public struggle.  An additional agreement was reached on January 31, 2016 to create and fund a permanent egalitarian prayer space under the explicit control of the Masorti Movement and its partners.  This agreement has yet to be implemented by the government.  If you want to help, email the prime minister and other leaders .  Insist that they honor their January 2016 agreement now.

A Western Wall That Is Open for Every Jew

The Masorti Movement gladly provides this service for worshipers wishing to pray at the Western Wall in a pluralistic and egalitarian manner. We believe that Jerusalem belongs to the entire Jewish People, including Jews with diverse practices, and therefore we offer our services to all Jews as long as they respect Masorti’s right to maintain the area as an egalitarian space.

Masorti is pleased to be able to provide egalitarian services at the Kotel to the Jewish community.  Donations are appreciated and allow us to offer these services without charge.

The Western Wall, a remnant of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, is one of the most sacred sites in Judaism. Praying there is a powerful and meaningful experience that enables one to connect deeply to their faith and to the Jewish people.

Even if you’re not physically at the Western Wall, prayer is always a powerful tool for connection.

Why is the Western Wall important?

The Western Wall is important and significant in Judaism as it’s the only remaining part of the Second Temple. It is also located near Temple Mount which is considered to be a holy site.

When was the Western Wall built?

The Western Wall is said to have been built by King Herod in 20 BCE. The wall survived when the Temple was destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE.

Why is the Western Wall called the Wailing Wall?

Many refer to the Western Wall as the ‘Wailing ‘wall’ due to the mournful prayers that have been said by the Wall for centuries.

U.S. restricts travel for Israel staff as Iran attack fears rise

The United States has restricted travel for its staff in Israel , as fears grow of an imminent retaliatory attack by Iran .

The U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem issued a security alert Thursday restricting its employees and their family members from personal travel outside the greater Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Be’er Sheva areas until further notice “out of an abundance of caution.”

The warning comes as Israel’s military vowed it would defend the country and respond, with expectations mounting that Tehran will soon strike back for the attack on its embassy in Syria that killed a number of senior commanders. The exchanges have raised fears that the Israel-Hamas war that has devastated the Gaza Strip could escalate into a wider conflict.

Israel never claimed responsibility for the airstrike on its rival’s consulate in Damascus, but Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said earlier this week that Israel “must be punished and it shall be,” for what he considered an effective attack on Iranian soil.

The U.S. has promised support for its ally in the face of Iranian threats and worked to persuade Tehran to avoid significant escalation, but Israel has signaled its readiness for whatever retribution may be coming.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Thursday that a direct Iranian attack will require “an appropriate Israeli response” against Iran, while an Israel Defense Forces spokesperson, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, said that the country was “alert and highly prepared” for a variety of scenarios.

“Whoever harms us, we will harm them,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also said Thursday as he visited an air base. “We are prepared to meet all of the security needs of the state of Israel, both defensively and offensively,” he added.

Netanyahu vowed Thursday that Israel was prepared for scenarios beyond Gaza.

The growing tensions in the Middle East come as Palestinians in Gaza marked somber Eid celebrations this week amid severe food shortages despite Israeli promises to allow more humanitarian aid into the enclave. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Thursday that famine in Gaza was “imminent,” after USAID Administrator Samantha Power said a day earlier that it was “credible” to assess that famine had already begun in the territory.

More than 33,600 people have now been killed in Gaza, the enclave’s Health Ministry said, in the six months of war since the Hamas-led attack on Israel on Oct. 7, which killed an estimated 1,200 people.

The militant group’s political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, said Hamas was still seeking a cease-fire deal despite the deaths of his three sons in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza earlier this week, but talks to secure a truce and the release of remaining hostages remain deadlocked .

It remained unclear whether Iran’s retaliation would come in the form of a direct attack or through some of the web of Tehran-backed groups that have already waged attacks from Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen in recent months.

Tehran has so far avoided direct confrontation with Israel or Washington. But Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said Thursday that “legitimate defense with the aim of punishing the aggressor” was a necessity in the wake of the consulate strike, accusing Israel of targeting diplomatic premises in violation of international law, according to Iranian state-run news agency IRNA.

The Pentagon said Thursday that top U.S. commander for the Middle East, Gen. Michael “Erik” Kurilla, had moved up his trip to Israel so he could meet with Israeli military leadership and discuss “current security threats.”

President Joe Biden said Wednesday that Iran was threatening to launch a “significant attack on Israel,” and that the U.S. commitment to Israel’s security against threats from Iran and its proxies remained “ironclad” despite growing criticism from Washington of its ally’s actions in Gaza.

The White House also said Thursday that the U.S. has communicated to Iran that it had no involvement in the strike in Damascus, and warned Iran not to use this attack as a pretext to escalate further in the region, or to attack U.S. facilities or personnel.

Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei looks at the coffins of members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, in Tehran

Secretary of State Antony Blinken has held telephone conversations with his Chinese, Turkish and Saudi counterparts “to make clear that escalation is not in anyone’s interest” and that countries should urge Iran not to escalate.

“We have also engaged with European allies and partners over the past few days and urged them as well to send a clear message to Iran that escalation is not in Iran’s interest, it’s not in the region’s interest, and it’s not in the world’s interest,” spokesman Matthew Miller said Thursday .

British Foreign Minister David Cameron said he had made it clear to his Iranian counterpart that the Islamic Republic must not draw the Middle East into a wider conflict.

“I am deeply concerned about the potential for miscalculation leading to further violence,” Cameron said on X .

France warned its citizens Friday to “imperatively refrain from travel in the coming days to Iran, Lebanon, Israel and the Palestinian Territories.” German airline Lufthansa and its subsidiary Austrian Airlines, the only two Western carriers flying into Tehran, extended a suspension of flights to the Iranian capital.

There are renovations planned for the Kotel Tunnels tours complex - what this means is that between Jan 7-13, 2024 they will be closed and no tours will be offered - not the classic Great Stone Tour and not the Great Bridge Tour.

The VR and Chain of Generations will be operating.

Additionally, due to the work that will be done there will no be any wheelchair accessible tours during the months of January and February.

Appreciate info like this being posted! Thank you!

Thanks. I plan to visit in November '23. Is there a specific tunnel tour you'd recommend?

Never mind! I found this link on a different thread. It looks like I might want to do both tours. https://english.thekotel.org/attractions/western-wall-tunnels-sites/

The U.S. issues new travel guidelines, warning that Iran will avenge the killings of senior commanders.

The State Department has barred its employees from traveling to large parts of Israel. Iran has repeatedly vowed to strike back over the deadly bombing this month of an Iranian Embassy complex in Syria.

A view of Jerusalem’s Old City.

  • April 12, 2024

Several countries including the United States have issued new travel guidelines for Israel and the surrounding region, as the Israeli military said its forces were “highly alert” for a possible Iranian strike in retaliation for the killings of several commanders.

Iran has repeatedly vowed to strike back at Israel over the bombing of an Iranian Embassy complex in Damascus, Syria, this month that killed three generals and four other military officers. An American official said on Friday that Washington expects an attack by Iran against Israel that would be bigger than recent attacks in the long shadow war between the two countries, but not so big that it would draw the United States into war. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

The U.S. State Department on Thursday barred its employees from traveling to large parts of Israel, the first time the U.S. government had restricted the movement of its employees in this way since the war in Gaza began more than six months ago.

On Thursday, Britain told its citizens that they “should consider leaving” Israel and the Palestinian territories “if it is safe to do so.” On Friday, India told its citizens “not to travel to Iran or Israel till further notice,” while France advised people not to travel to Israel, Iran or Lebanon and evacuated the families of French diplomats from Iran.

Asked about the U.S. travel warning , Matthew Miller, the State Department spokesman, said at a news briefing Thursday: “We have seen Iran making public threats against Israel in the past few days.” He declined to provide details about any specific information that prompted the warning.

The new guidelines bar U.S. government employees and their families from traveling to locations outside the Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Beersheba metropolitan areas “out of an abundance of caution” until further notice. The State Department said U.S. personnel could move among those areas for personal travel.

The top American military commander for the Middle East, Gen. Michael E. Kurilla, traveled to Israel to coordinate a response to possible Iranian retaliation, U.S. officials said.

“Our enemies think that they will divide Israel and the United States,” the Israeli defense minister, Yoav Gallant, said in a statement on Friday after meeting with General Kurilla. “They are connecting us and are strengthening the relationship between us.”

If Iran attacks, he added, “we will know how to respond.”

On Thursday, the Israeli military’s chief spokesman, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, said that the armed forces were “highly alert and prepared” for any action Iran might take, even as the timing and scale of any response remained unclear. Analysts say that Tehran, which has long used a network of proxy forces to project power across the Middle East, wants to avoid igniting a full-fledged war that could drag in the United States and threaten the survival of Iran’s regime.

“For years, and even more so during the war, Iran has been financing, directing and arming its proxies — in Lebanon, Gaza, Syria, Iraq and Yemen — to attack the state of Israel,” he said. “An attack from Iranian territory would be clear evidence of Iran’s intentions to escalate the Middle East and stop hiding behind the proxies.”

Our Coverage of the Israel-Hamas War

News and Analysis

The disappearance and death of an Israeli teenager, whose body was found in the West Bank , spurred deadly rioting by Israeli settlers in Palestinian villages, ratcheting up tensions  even further in the occupied territory.

For months, Western governments have sent weapons to Israel while fending off accusations of abetting war crimes in Gaza. But as an outcry over the civilian death toll mounts, maintaining that balance is becoming increasingly difficult .

Mobilizing the American Left: As the death toll in Gaza climbed, the pro-Palestinian movement grew into a powerful, if disjointed, political force in the United States . Democrats are feeling the pressure.

Riding Rage Over Israel: Jackson Hinkle’s incendiary commentary  has generated over two million new followers on X since October — a surge that some researchers say is aided by inauthentic accounts by the online celebrity.

Psychedelics and Trauma: Thousands of festival-goers were using mind-altering substances when Hamas-led fighters attacked on Oct 7. Now, scientists are studying the effects of such drugs at a moment of trauma .

Turmoil at J Street: The war in Gaza has raised serious concerns within the Jewish political advocacy group about its ability to hold a middle position  without being pulled apart by forces on the right and the left.
