The thing is, once you’re in Lisbon, you’ll realize that there are quite a few wine-related activities to choose from.

I’ve gone ahead and carefully handpicked the top wine tours in Lisbon available, so you don’t have to worry about taking some subpar tours that aren’t worth your time and money. Let’s jump right in!

Best Wine Tasting Tours in Lisbon

  • Lisbon Wine Experience with 4WD Tour & Wine Tasting
  • Private Full-Day Wine Tour with Food and Wine Tasting in Southern Lisbon

Lisbon Wine Tour Reviews

1. private wine tasting tour to the setubal wine region from lisbon.

lisbon wine tour

  • Duration: 6 hours
  • Departure: Hotel pickup and drop-off included
  • Departure Time: 9:30 AM
  • Includes:  Private tour with professional guide, 10 Wines in total in the 3 cellars on agenda, tasting of traditional cheese breads and other goods, entrance fees to all the wineries and their visits; Guaranteed to skip the long lines, transportation by private air-conditioned car/van

I couldn’t think to start this guide out with any other tour than the Private Wine Tasting Tour to the Setubal Wine Region from Lisbon ! This 6-hour excursion will completely change your perspective on local wine country, providing you and your party with a customized experience you’re sure to want to repeat.

No more having to deal with cookie-cutter tours that lack character and personality, nor guides who seem to just be reciting a script.

I don’t know about you, but when I’m in a foreign place, I am really not a fan of having to book separate transportation. Not only is it an extra cost, but it more often than not results in me wandering around searching for the guide or in the wrong place, completely.

The fact that the guide picked me and my party up right from our hotel was a huge benefit, starting the tour off in the best way. This tour starts out at 9:30, so you’ll be able to see the ins-and-outs of the Setubal wine region and still be back in time for dinner!

Transportation is air-conditioned, spacious, and the guide does a great job at regaling interesting tales along the way about each site as we passed them. Pass the Estatua do Marques de Pombal, then arrive in Azeitao, where you’ll learn all about the local cheeses and wines (spoiler alert: they’re both mouthwateringly good).

We visited 3 of the most respected cellars, trying around 10 wines in total, where we were able to learn about and taste the different wines produced in the region.

If you’ve never tasted wine before, the guide does a great job at showing you how to properly taste each one and pair it with the “right” cheeses. For history lovers, you’ll enjoy learning about the Arrabida Natural Park, mountain range, and the geology/history behind it.

lisbon wine tour

  • Duration: 9 hours
  • Departure Time: 8:00 AM
  • Includes:  Wine tasting, cheese tasting, professional guide, transport by air-conditioned minivan or car

If the previous tour called out to you but you’re looking for something a bit lengthier or in-depth, check out this next tour. The Private Full-Day Arrabida Wine Tour and Food Tasting  is a fantastic alternative to going to dinner at a fancy restaurant.

This tour was enriching and educational, and we were able to try some of the most incredible wines and cheeses I’ve ever had in my life with friendly, knowledgeable experts.

As it is a 9-hour tour, this one starts out early in the morning so that you get to make the most of the day while avoiding the majority of crowds. Just like with the other tour, the guide will pick you and your party right up from your hotel, so no fretting about meetup points is needed.

I loved the fact that it was a private tour, so the guide asked us what we were personally interested in seeing most and tailored our tour around that.

Our first stop of the day was at the Livramento Market, which offers an insane array of fresh fruits, fish, breads, cheeses, and much more. After checking out the tasty offerings, you’ll hop back in the vehicle where you’ll get to see the Parque Natural da Arrabida and have time to snap some photos.

You’ll then head to the luxe Quinta da Bacalhoa wine cellars with a local guide to lead the way, explaining the 3 different world-class wine offerings and the history behind the cellar, itself.

I loved the way this tour was broken up, so we weren’t just chugging down glasses of wine at cellar after cellar. After the first cellar, we went to a tile factory to witness how they employ traditional European practices in order to make these little pieces of art.

Next up is the Jose Maria da Fonseca wine cellar for a private tour of the location which sits in the charming Azeitao Village, followed by an optional food and wine tasting at another renowned wine company.

3. Lisbon Northern Region Wine Tasting Private Tour

lisbon wine tour

  • Includes: Private tour, professional guide, transportation by private air-conditioned van or car, 9 wines between 2 cellar visits, taste traditional olive oil and handmade bread, entrance fees, skip-the-line tickets lines

This next tour is truly like stepping into some kind of fairytale with a lot of wine and delicious food. The Lisbon Northern Region Wine Tasting Private Tour  is 6 hours of pure fun, in a private tour setting so you don’t have to worry about getting lost in a crowd of people you don’t even know.

With a professional guide there to customize the itinerary based on your interests, you’re practically guaranteed to love this experience! Starting out at 9:30 am, you’ll benefit from a convenient hotel pickup so you don’t have to deal with renting a car or meetup spots.

Alternatively, they’ll even pick you up at the port or another location that’s easier for you. The transport for the day is a spacious, comfortable van or car, depending on the size of your private party.

Learn all about how wine came to the area over 2,000 years ago, as well as why this region in particular is so perfect for the traditional Portuguese grape varieties.

Of course, no wine tour is complete without actually tasting the product, and on this tour you’ll try 6 – 9 wines between 2 different cellars. One of my favorite parts was also trying the delicious olive oil and bread made there by hand, going perfectly with the wines!

You’d be remiss to not explore the old-world charm of this rural area, and your guide will take you on various historic strolls through the most famous sites while teaching you about each one.

You can also choose to simply relax and enjoy the magnificent views while sipping on a glass of wine and munching on some freshly-made snacks. Either way, you’re bound to have a fantastic time!

4. Lisbon Wine Experience with 4WD Tour & Wine Tasting

lisbon wine tour

  • Duration: 5 hours
  • Departure: Hotel pickup and drop-off included
  • Departure Time: 9:00 AM
  • Includes: Transport by van or minibus, guided wine tour, 4WD Jeep guided tour, 4 wine tastings, visit to old wine press house

Normally, we wouldn’t promote any kind of wine and driving combo, but this tour is safely-organized in order to balance fun, history, and culture all into one nicely-packaged excursion.

The Lisbon Wine Experience with 4WD Tour & Wine Tasting is simply a blast, and I couldn’t leave it off of this list as it’s one of my personal favorites. If you’re at all interested in history, beautiful views, and/or gastronomy, you’re sure to love this experience!

If you’re on the hunt for a respite from the hustle and bustle of the city, I found this to be convenient and one of the best ways to venture out into the tranquil countryside.

Not only that, but it’s known for being one of the most prominent wine-producing areas of the DOC Lisboa. This tour is so much more than your run-of-the-mill excursion that just takes you through a boring chain of events.

Rather, you’ll get to see one of the most famous mills in the area that has been around for over 200 years now. Used for baking bread in a wood-fired oven, this heritage site is not only intriguing but quite tasty!

Zoom through the vineyards in a 4WD convertible car for around 40 minutes of pure exhilaration while your pro guide and a local viticulturist will provide an educational commentary on the hilly vineyards, as well as the different types of grape varietals, how they grow, how to make wine, and more. This exclusive tour is designed around your needs, so feel free to share your preferences.

5. Private Full-Day Wine Tour with Food and Wine Tasting in Southern Lisbon

lisbon wine tour

  • Duration: 8 to 9 hours
  • Includes: Private transportation, alcoholic beverages, air-conditioned vehicle, all entrance fees, certified tour guide, all fees and taxes

This is yet again one of the most comprehensive, long tours of its kind and if you’re serious about learning fast, this is the one to take. The Private Full-Day Wine Tour with Food and WIne Tasting in Southern Lisbon  starts off in the morning, in order to pack in as much as possible throughout the day without overwhelming you and your group.

If you’re short on time or it’s your first time in Lisbon, I can’t recommend this tour enough! You’ll simply see so much in a short amount of time, while still pacing things in a way that allows you enough time to soak in and appreciate each location.

After being picked up in the morning by your professional guide in an air-conditioned vehicle, you’ll head off for Mercado do Livramento, which is one of the best and oldest markets in the world. Not only did I love the fresh food here, but the traditional Portuguese “azulejos” or tiles, which adorn the walls around it.

In fact, we were even able to explore a traditional tile factory where we received a guided tour packed with interesting facts and firsthand opportunities to see how they’re made. Arrabida is next, which is known for its friendly locations, mountainous terrain, and beautiful beaches.

After, you’ll kick off the various winery visits with the Jose Maria de Fonseca, which has been family-owned for 7 generations.

There are many other winery options available to visit, so the guide will ask you for feedback on your preferences in order to best serve you up options to suit your interests.

There are also plenty of cool architectural landmarks the guide takes you to see, including the Portuguese Golden Gate Bridge, which looks over Lisbon and the Tagus River.

What is Lisbon wine ?

Wine lovers, you are on the right page.

VisitmyLisbon has worked long and hard to introduce the wines of the Lisbon region in an excellent way. This region is outlined in light pink and magenta on the national map opposite.

For us, it is impossible to taste a wine without understanding what is behind it, historically, personally, and at a price that is not fair.

The purpose of this page is to present you the way we built our visit with a tasting around local wines .

It is a tasting of the wines of the Lisbon region. It is totally different from the customised tours we normally offer . This tour is reserved for people over 18 years old, but minors and non-drinkers can of course come with us.

Lisbon wine tour & tasting by VisitmyLisbon.com

How to best introduce the wines of the Lisbon region ?

To this question, we have answered three topics :

  • History : the history of the vine and its evolution until today in the country and in the region. The people who helped its development, its national and international recognition are discussed. As the main theme of the visit is not history but oenology, we approach them in the background.
  • Human : who are the producers, why were they selected from the wines tastint tour in Lisbon ? We bring together their affinities and their vision with the treatment of the soil. The history of their quinta is inseparable and often the result of work over several generations. We will show you some examples of a rare richness and undeniable interest.
  • Value for money : by offering the best quality/price ratio in the region. We have selected qualitative wines that we feel are representative and unmissable in relation to their reputation.

Content of the private Lisbon wine tour :

From sparkling to sweet, we will go through different whites & reds while criss-crossing Lisbon. This 6-wine tasting is composed of one sparkling, two whites, two reds, and one sweet.

Over 2-3 km, historical anecdotes will mingle with the nectars tasted in a subtle and thoughtful way : 3 renowned wine merchants will offer the wines previously selected for tasting in a friendly setting.

Your guide is an urban farmer, biodynamic consultant and is involved in many wine projects in the Lisbon area.

To keep you on track, you will be given a tasting notebook with 3 parts :

  • Introduction to the region and the main grape varieties.
  • Tastings , general and personal notes.
  • Discovery of the producers and their estates. In all objectivity, we seek the completeness of the information disclosed. The entertaining side , DNA of VisitmyLisbon, is of course not put aside.

To go further with the tasting of Portuguese wines

To go further in your search, both geographically and personally, I recommend our Portuguese national wine tasting .

Wine in Portugal is a classic. From north to south, the terroirs express themselves through fantastic regional products and offer sublime wine/speciality tasting combinations…

Who hasn’t tasted the wines of Porto ? Vinhos verdes are also a popular classic… They almost steal the show from the already famous Douro wines. The Alentejo is not to be outdone in terms of notoriety.

These regions are the lighthouse in an ocean full of soft reflections ( hips ). These reflections are the wines of the Lisbon region (formerly Estremadura ), the wines of the Dão , Tràs-os-Montes or the Algarve , Bairrada , or the Beiras .

It is in this second group of less famous wines that my favourites are found .

To help you find your way around, we have selected a range of great wines. In all these regions, some are famous for a particular type of wine. We have selected 8 wines that we think are a must.

This tasting takes place in four locations for a complete sensory journey !

lisbon tours

I highly recommend Portugal Farm Experiences and especially the wine tasting experience. We were three couples on vacation in Lisbon and wanted to see also the region around the city. The wine tasting experience was just perfect for that. We had a fantastic time exploring the vineyards, learning about the production process and the history of the producer, and of course also tasting the wines. Catarina, our guide, did a fantastic job showing us around and teaching us how to evaluate and compare different wines. We had a blast! It doesn’t matter if you are a sommelier or a amateur like me. Also the booking process with Portugal Farm Experiences was super easy and smooth! We are looking forward to try one of the other experiences they offer when we are back in Portugal! See you soon 🙂

Our winery experience from the beautiful drive to the unexpected pastel de nata treats was amazing. If you want an intimate experience where you even get to meet the matriarch of the winery, choose PFE. Catarina, the tour guide, was so attentive, knowledgeable, and even a bit silly—dropping bits and pieces of fun facts about the wine and the estate. This definitely wasn’t just a destination; it was a whole experience

lisbon tours

They took us to a beautiful vineyard outside of Lisboa where we had a great time tasting wine, looking around, and learning about wine. Fun talking to, humor and no awkward moments ☺ would highly recommend this experience. And the wine was great too☺🍷🍷. Great day!

Wine Tasting in Lisbon: 11 Places You Have to Try

Wine Tasting in Lisbon

In Portugal, wine is big business. Portuguese wine may not enjoy the international reputation that French, Italian, and American wines enjoy, but that may be just because the locals keep the good stuff for themselves.

Portugal's Mediterranean climate makes it a great place to grow grapes, and the history of winemaking in the country goes back 4,000 years to the Tartessians, who first planted grapes in the Tagus River valley. With a heritage like that, it's no surprise that you'll find tons of wine tours and wine tasting events both in Lisbon and in locations throughout the country.

Drop off your bags at a luggage storage in Lisbon , and you'll be ready to explore some of the best wine-related activities Portugal's capital has to offer. The truth is, Lisbon is an excellent destination for wine lovers, and sampling the produce of some of Portugal's oldest wineries on a Lisbon wine tasting trip or private tour is an essential bucket list item for anyone who loves wine. There are plenty of exciting things to do in Lisbon at night as well!

Best wine tasting places in Lisbon

Lisbon Winery

Lisbon Winery is a wine bar and restaurant that celebrates wines produced locally and offers one of the best Lisbon wine tasting experiences you could have. The bar contains more than 200 different varieties, celebrating the best of the Portuguese winemaking tradition, with bottles from many of Portugal's top wine regions. But the idea here is to celebrate what's local, so this wine tasting in Lisbon focuses on the best producers from around the capital city.

A tasting here feels like taking a wine tour of Portugal's wine regions without leaving the city. Avoiding corporate conglomerates, Lisbon Winery focuses instead on small producers and curates the best wines on offer from independent winemakers. This restaurant keeps the wine flowing in the Portuguese capital and offers a selection that puts many corporate wine tours to shame.

Wines of Portugal

Wines of Portugal is a wine shop that offers regular wine tastings and is a brilliant place to learn more about Portuguese wines. It's one of the best places in Lisbon for a wine tasting, as you can try before you buy with no pressure to purchase. The shop stocks more than 1,000 different wines from across Portugal, and the helpful staff are always on hand to offer suggestions and tips.

What sets this store apart is its self-serve aesthetic. This isn't a fancy wine bar where you will spend as much time marveling at the decor and the attentive staff as you do appreciating the glass in front of you. Instead, Wines of Portugal is all about the wine itself. You serve yourself from vending machines and curate your own wine tasting. That novel approach makes this a fun way to explore Portuguese wine and enjoy an urban wine tour that won't break the bank.

From the Vine

Marketing itself as Portugal's first wine tasting bar, this establishment aims to celebrate Portugal's wine regions and take your tongue on a wine tour of the entire country. From the Vine offers flights of three, four, or five wines so you can immerse yourself in a single region or try a little bit of everything.

Their offerings include a two-hour wine and cheese lunch that pairs great wine with local cheeses to give you an insight into Portuguese gastronomy. They also do a one-hour-long predinner wine tasting in the evenings so you can whet your appetite for some great Lisbon food. Located close to the Jardim do Principe Real, this is a great place to see what a great wine cellar can offer.

Wine tasting bars in Lisbon

Wine With A View - Torre de Belem

One of the more unique Lisbon wine tasting experiences out there, Wine With A View combines gorgeous sunsets, a historic monument, and exceptional wine — what's not to like?

Housed in the Torre de Belem, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Lisbon's most iconic landmarks, this wine bar offers some of the best views in the city. As you enjoy a glass or two of Portugal's finest reds or whites, you can watch the sun set over the river and take in panoramic views of some of Lisbon's most historic buildings.

If you want to turn your wine tasting in Lisbon into a truly romantic experience, this is the place to do it. Just be sure to book ahead, as this spot gets very busy during peak sunset hours.

Lisbon Wine Cellar

The Lisbon Wine Cellar is another great option for those looking for an urban wine tour without leaving the city. This wine shop and tasting room offers regular free tastings, making it a great place to explore Portuguese wines without breaking the bank.

With more than 400 different wines on offer, ranging from affordable everyday drinking wines to rare and expensive vintages, there's something for everyone at the Lisbon Wine Cellar. The knowledgeable staff are always on hand to offer suggestions and tips, and the relaxed atmosphere makes it a great place to spend an afternoon or evening.

Taylor's Port

Of course, Portugal is perhaps better known for the fortified wine known as port than it is for its regular wine. And while Porto is the center of port production in the country, Lisbon certainly has its share of great places to try Port, Sherry, and other strong wine-based drinks.

One of the best places to try port in Lisbon is Taylor's Port , a historic port wine lodge that has been producing and exporting port since 1692, making it one of the oldest port cellars in the world. The lodge offers free tours and tastings, so you can learn about the history and production of port before sampling some of the different varieties on offer.

Ageda Belem Urban Winery

If you're looking for something a little different, why not try an urban winery? Ageda Belem is a small-scale winery located in the heart of Lisbon that produces natural, unfiltered wines using traditional methods.

The result is a range of unique and interesting wines that are well worth seeking out. The urban winery offers free tastings, so it's a great place to sample some of their wares and learn more about the production process.

This is an excellent place to visit if you don't have time to take one of the many wine tours that will take you out of Lisbon and into the wine country beyond. Sourcing their grapes from local vineyards, this urban winery makes exceptional wine in one of Lisbon's most historic neighborhoods, and it's well worth checking them out and seeing what they have to offer.

The best wine events in Lisbon

Lisbon Wine Events

Wine is no longer an elitist pursuit reserved for the educated few. But Lisbon Wine Events aims to preserve some of the exclusivity around wine drinking. If you want to act delightfully snobby about your wine, this is the company for you.

Lisbon Wine Events focuses on wine tasting with a twist. They go out of their way to explore the underground Lisbon wine scene with wine tastings in unique bars and restaurants through the city, many of which are well off the beaten path. You'll have to join to be part of this exclusive club and then wait to be notified when they have an event. But the reward is being on the cutting-edge of wine culture in Lisbon.

Best Wine Tours around Lisbon

If you have a little more time on your hands, consider heading outside the city to do some wine tasting at the many vineyards the region has to offer. Not only will you get to taste some exceptional wine, but you'll also get a better understanding of how it is produced and the history and passion that goes into every glass.

For example, just half an hour from Lisbon you'll find Sintra. This beautiful historic town is worth visiting for its charming narrow streets and monuments alone, and Sintra's historic center is well known as one of the top places to visit in Portugal. But the town is also surrounded by some exceptional vineyards, and you'll find tons of tour operators willing to take you on the best wine tours in the area.

Alternatively, you could head to Viuva Gomes, a winery located in the famed fishing town of Colares. Learn more about the excellent wines of the region and enjoy a glass or two with some fresh seafood while you enjoy the sunset in this charming village.

There are plenty of other great vineyards and wineries in the Lisbon area, so there's plenty to explore if you have the time. Whether you stick to the city or venture out into the wine country beyond, you're sure to find some exceptional wines to enjoy during your stay in Portugal's capital city.

Wine Events in Lisbon

This is a wine festival with a twist. Pura Sede is Portugal's first festival dedicated to natural wine. That means nothing put in and nothing taken out. This is wine the ancient Tartessians would recognize, and the perfect way to go back to basics and experience wine in its rawest form.

The festival takes place every year in late April. For three days, natural wine producers from all over Portugal descend on Lisbon to showcase their wines. There are also talks and workshops on offer, so you can learn more about this unique type of wine.

If you're interested in trying something different and expanding your understanding of what wine can be, Pura Sede is a great event to check out.

Enophilo Wine Fest

Attendees can expect to find over 200 different types of wine on offer, as well as gourmet food and live music. It's the perfect way to spend a spring day in Lisbon, and you might even discover a new favorite wine while you're there.

I’ve heard about 1 hour wait at Peña palace and crowds of tourists. And it’s pretty gaudy. We travel a lot but I wonder if it’s worth it for a half or full day? Plus some tour reviews say it’s just a taxi ride. I was going to do a half day tour but would we have time to see anything?

Would we be happier staying in Lisbon or just going to the coast?

I am thinking of a wine tour on Thursday or Saturday.

The weather is fine for the moment, so why not take a train to Cascais and the coast there? Weekend weather may not be quite so good, cloud and possibly rain is forecast along with cooler temperatures. Trains go from Cais do Sodré station down by the river. It's a nice ride along the river and the estuary with trains every 20 minutes daily.

Or take one of the ferries across the river and see the 'other side' away from the crowds?

https://www.tripadvisor.ca/Attraction_Review-g189164-d10634885-Reviews-Sintra_Tourist_Bus_434-Sintra_Sintra_Municipality_Lisbon_District_Central_Portug.html

If you have 2 - 6 people in your group, I suggest that you catch a Bolt (€20-30) directly from your Lisbon hotel at about 8am to the front gate of the Pena Palace by 9am. With a pre-booked 9:30 am timed admission, you will beat and stay in front the hordes of people who are still on their way up in bus 434.

After your visit at the Pena Palace, you can easily walk to the Moorish Castle.

When you wish to return to Sintra, you can hike down or try to catch the 434 bus from the road in front of the Moorish Castle or Pena Palace. Expect a long wait or line up.

Supposedly, you can buy a one-way 434 bus ticket for €4.10. However, you might expect the bus driver to pressure you to pay for the €14 all day ticket. What are you going to do after waiting a long time in the lineup and you're standing there with lots of other tourists trying to get on the bus?

Another option is to look for local drivers who hang out at the entrances to Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle offering tourists a car ride back to Sintra €5 pp.

We visited Pena palace last week. Our reservation was for 10:30 and we arrived around 10am. We didn’t wait too long to get in, maybe 15 minutes. We spent about 2 hours there, and another hour walking the grounds (we didn’t see many others doing this, so the extra walking may not interest many people).

As far as transportation, we took a Bolt service (similar to Uber) to the palace which dropped us off at the gate. After reading many reviews, we decided on this mode of transportation as it was the least stressful for us.

Hope that helps
