Paul Kelly To Headline Red Hot Summer 2023 Season

by Paul Cashmere on August 28, 2022

in News , Noise Pro

Paul Kelly will headline the 2023 season for Duane McDonald’s Red Hot Summer with Bernard Fanning, Missy Higgins, Mark Seymour, Vika & Linda and Ian Moss & Troy Cassar-Daly also heading around Australia in the new year.

Paul Kelly says, “We’re really looking forward to these shows. The last two years have brought home how precious live music is. To us and to those who come. We need each other. We’re going to bring it, give our all and play each show as if it’s our last. Because you never know what’s around the corner”.

The 2023 season of Red Hot Summer will start 14 January ay the Mornington Racecourse at Mornington in Victoria.

I can’t wait to get back on the road to do some ‘proper’ touring after almost three years of dribs and drabs and disruption. A lot of the towns on this run I have NEVER played before in 30 years of touring, so I can’t wait to get out there and play stuff from right across my career,” says Bernard Fanning.

For Missy Higgins, the tour will take her to places in Australia she rarely goes. “It will be so good to get back on the road and play in so many incredible parts of the country,” Missy said.” The past few years have shown us that we can’t take anything for granted and being able to tour again will be very special, it’s what I love to do most. I’m also really looking forward to sharing the stage with such incredible Aussie artists.”

Mark Seymour will be completing his Red Hot Summer dates with Hunters & Collectors when he will immediately head out for another ride solo. “The Red Hot Summer has grown into one of the biggest tours on our national music calendar,” Mark says. “It does what few other festivals can. It goes to where people live which is pretty much everywhere. Reaching people matters deeply to me so I really appreciate the opportunity to be part of this fabulous bill in 2023.”

Paul Kelly  has been writing songs, making records and touring for over forty years. Along the way he has released over 40 albums, including live concerts, compilations and soundtracks. He has collaborated with many other artists, notably writing  Treaty  with Yothu Yindi and co-producing Archie Roach’s landmark debut album  Charcoal Lane . His awards, too numerous to mention, include 17 ARIAs and an Order of Australia. He has published several books, including collections of his lyrics, a memoir  How To Make Gravy  and an anthology of his favourite poems  Love Is Strong As Death . Paul’s songs have a way of digging into the country in a way that few artists do – how it looks, feels, tastes, sounds. The joys and sorrows, achievements and follies. If you want to know something about Australia, how it feels to be Australian, you can find it in his songs. His live shows in recent years reveal a performer and band at the peak of their powers. They bring all the shades and colours. Passionate, dramatic, tender and emotional. For the RED HOT SUMMER TOUR run he will be playing a generous selection from his ever-green, ever-selling greatest hits record  Songs From The South,  as well as delving into a range of songs from his vast catalogue.

We’re really looking forward to these shows,” Paul Kelly says. The last two years have brought home how precious live music is. To us and to those who come. We need each other. We’re going to bring it, give our all and play each show as if it’s our last. Because you never know what’s around the corner.

Bernard Fanning  has accumulated one of the most celebrated songbooks on the Australian rock spectrum. The former Powderfinger frontman has collectively released 11 studio albums producing songs that have become ingrained in the Australian psyche. Tracks like  My Happiness ,  These Days ,  Sunsets ,  Burn Your Name ,  Wish You Well,   Songbird ,  Blue Toowong Skies  and  Belly Of The Beast  have become the moving soundtrack for a generation, with Bernard’s emotive and distinctive voice completely capturing our hearts. He has a trophy cabinet that holds seven number #1 albums, 23 ARIA Awards, and five APRA Awards to name a few… his songs have appeared in triple j’s Hottest 100 an incredible 23 times including three #1 spots for  These Days  (1999),  My Happiness  (2000) and  Wish You Well  (2005). It’s fair to say Bernard Fanning has firmly cemented his position as one of Australia’s finest singer-songwriters and lyricists. With over 20 years of touring, expect a rock show with swagger, entertaining banter, crowd interaction and a display of pure musical talent by a member of Australian rock royalty and his band who are the perfect accompaniment to his wide-ranging set list of heartfelt country – folk tinged charm and classic rock grooves.

“I can’t wait to get back on the road to do some ‘proper’ touring after almost three years of dribs and drabs and disruption. A lot of the towns on this run I have NEVER played before in 30 years of touring, so I can’t wait to get out there and play stuff from right across my career,” Bernard Fanning says.

Missy Higgins  is one of our most beloved singer/songwriters and her acclaimed studio albums,  The Sound of White ,  On  a Clear Night ,  The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle,   Oz  and  Solastalgia   have sold more than two million copies. Classic songs like  Scar ,  The Special Two ,  Steer ,  Everyone’s Waiting  and  Futon Couch , plus her unforgettable live shows, have made Missy an authentic household name. She has won nine ARIA awards and multiple APRA Awards. Missy also received a Screen Music Award for Best Original Song composed for the Screen for Australian Film  Don’t Tell .  Earlier in 2022, Missy released mini-album  Total Control  featuring songs inspired initially by the musical fragments she wrote for the powerful ABC TV Series of the same name. The songs pick up themes of exploitation and female empowerment that run through  Total Control  and which also dominated real world headlines last year as a string of abuse allegations emerged from Parliament House. The stories Missy shares through songwriting come to life on stage as enjoyed by the thousands of fans who attend her concerts.

Mark Seymour  formed Hunters and Collectors in 1980 with a bunch of Uni friends. The band become famous for its rhythmic power and very quickly became touted as the ‘next big thing’. The album  Human Frailty  has proven to be one of the most important and enduring record of the 80s. With  Human Frailty,  Mark discovered love, loss, and pop melody – his solo records are directly connected to this era and bear the same stamp of raw honesty and emotional power. He continues to search for the emotional truth in a song. As well as 13 Hunters and Collectors albums, Mark has released eight further albums. Mark Seymour is one of our finest songwriters, capturing our stories of love, loss, human courage and achievement.

Vika & Linda’s  effortless harmonies and journey through rock, country, gospel, reggae, R&B, soul and blues, while always paying tribute to their rich Tongan heritage, has earned the respect and admiration of their greatest fans – the renowned Australian artists they’ve performed and recorded with, and whose work their voices have enhanced.  Paul Kelly says  “Their voices combined sound salty-sweet and have that elusive twinned quality you only get when siblings sing together …  They  make the air beat in sync.”   In September 2021, Vika & Linda released  The Wait , their first original studio album since 2002. It debuted at #2 on the ARIA chart.  The Wait  has continued a triumphant period for Vika & Linda which saw them score their first number one album with their career anthology,  ‘Akilotoa , and three months later a #2 debut for their gospel collection,  Sunday (The Gospel According To Iso) .

Ian Moss  and  Troy Cassar-Daley , two powerhouse artists, joined forces in 2022 for one of the year’s most successful tours. A truly remarkable partnership, with simplicity proving to be a powerful vessel to tell a story and share a song, will continue into 2023 via the RED HOT SUMMER.  Ian Moss , a founding member of one of Australia’s greatest bands, Cold Chisel, is respected globally as one of our most iconic musicians. A multi-award winner, Mossy, who delivers a unique sound – not only as a telling soloist on guitar but also with his silken voice ringing with clarity and resonating with pure soul – was described by Cold Chisel bandmate Don Walker as  “the most gifted musician I’ve ever seen.”  Enough said.  Troy Cassar-Daley , a proud Gumbaynggirr/Bundjalung man, comes from a long line of storytellers and is regarded as one of Australia’s finest songwriters. On his way to collect every accolade possible including ARIA’s, APRA’s, Golden Guitars (the most in the awards history), Deadlys, National Indigenous Music Awards (NIMAs) and more, he has written with Paul Kelly, penned the anthemic  Shutting Down Our Town  for Jimmy Barnes, and recently Briggs sampled Troy’s harrowing and impactful story of  Shadows On the Hill . No matter what story Troy is telling via song you just need to listen.

The RED HOT SUMMER TOUR always sells out around the country and the 2023 line-up is highly anticipated. Don’t miss this massive 2023 celebration of Australian music.

Also, because we are an open air venue we would suggest to dress for the occasion. Depending on the season you may need to bring with you a warm coat, water proof jacket, rain poncho or gumboots.

Always remember to slip, slop slap because even though it may be overcast the UV rays can still break through the clouds. In the event of wet weather please remember that umbrellas are not allowed because they block the view of others, wear a poncho instead.

What time does the music start?

The gate open time does not reflect the time in which the music begins. The time the main act, and support act/s take the stage varies and is dependent on the Promoter, Artist/s and the weather conditions. Set times will be advertised as soon as they are available and will usually be listed on the ticketing agency’s website a couple of days before the concert.

There is time between when the gates open and when the music starts to allow patrons leisurely access without having to queue for long periods beforehand or miss any of the show.

We will do our best to advise you of the set times however the lead up time in which the Promoter announces the set list is not our responsibility. We will advertise the list on our Social Media platforms as soon as it has been finalised.

What disabled facilities do you have?

Accessible parking is available near the main entry point to the Hotel and Concert. You will be directed to the accessible parking spaces by our Traffic Marshals.

Accessible toilets are located inside the Hotel.

Accessible seating arrangements and companion tickets are handled by the Promoter & Ticketing agency – please refer any questions to the Ticketing agency for the concert.

Who is in charge of security?

Any security guards at the gates, outside the venue and inside the venue are appointed by Sandstone Point Hotel. If you have any issues please direct your questions to Hotel Staff.

What are your policies on Responsible Service of Alcohol?

Sandstone Point Hotel takes the Responsible Service of Alcohol very seriously. At every concert we have Security Guards and RSA Marshalls roaming the venue.

Patrons are assessed upon entry to the venue and if deemed to be intoxicated will be refused entry. Police and security guards also patrol the car park to ensure patrons are not “pre-loading” before entering the concert arena.

If you are concerned about the condition or behaviour of patrons near you please alert one of the Security or RSA staff members.

Can I visit your Bottle Shop at the concert?

No, in accordance with our alcohol management plan the Bottle Shop is closed on concert days.

If it is a seated concert does that mean I can’t dance?

No, we want everyone to enjoy the music as they see fit however we do want to be considerate of the people around and behind you. If you are attending a seated concert and would like to get up and dance there will be designated standing areas to the side that will not block anyone’s view.

What happens to Lost Property?

Any lost property that is found by or handed to a Sandstone Point Hotel staff member is held at the Hotel. If you have lost an item while at a concert please call our Hotel on 3475 3001 and provide a detailed description.

“Red Hot summer tour experience” Review of Sandstone Point Hotel

Sandstone Point Hotel

The bands were great (after the first 2) - our first time here for an outdoor concert as we normally attend A day on the Green concerts @Sirromet. Was an interesting experience ....... no lane ways to segregate patrons so in the instance that medical staff were needed (which did happen) paramedics with their stretcher had to make their way through the crowd with everyone having to stand up and move their blankets etc to make a path for them. Full strength glass event .... not that fussed on seeing so many drunk young women falling over with a wine bottle in their hand only lucky they didn’t land on it and do some real damage. Good that the bars stay open until the end however charging you to use your debit card interesting - you don’t get charged to use it at restaurants/bottleshops ..... easy money maker when they are already making ample at $12.50 a can! Some staff didn’t know what wines were available for purchase either - I ordered a bottle and was told we don’t sell that here i said well its on your list she clarified with her offsider and took my sale! Toilets we plentiful except they ran out of water! We ordered a hamper as you are not allowed to take in any of your own food like you can for A day on the Green - not bad but some items that were listed to be in it were missing and no cold pack to keep cool .... thankfully it was not a scorcher of a day and interesting when leaving with our hamper at the end of the night security wanted to check it .... aren’t they supposed to check bags on the way in??

Hi there, Thank you for coming to Red Hot Summer! Glad to hear you enjoyed the bands. We are lucky enough to be one of the few concert spaces that are able to offer full strength options, we do take every precaution to ensure our patrons are safe. We have roaming RSA Marshals who monitor staff practicing their Responsible Service of Alcohol training as well as monitor patron levels of intoxication. Our security also roam the venue to ensure patrons are safe and are drinking responsibly. We don't allow BYO food out of respect for our food vendours that operate on the day. These food trucks are small businesses who wouldn't survive staffing a full days work on a weekend without decent income, BYO food would negatively impact our food vendours. Bags are checked on the way in by security as well as the way out, being a licensed venue, our security has to ensure no alcohol leaves our premises which is why this check would have taken place. I will be sure to pass on your feedback about staff and your hamper to Management.

Hi AveMaria! We're so happy to hear that you joined us for the RHS Concert! Thank you for the kind feedback, i'll be sure to pass it onto the rest of our team. We can't wait to see you back again soon! Kind regards

We attended the red hot summer tour last night. We paid extra and were in the water view bar. Amazing experience. The staff were on point. The two young kids serving food were amazing. Not over packed. We also ventured into the general area and also felt that was just awesome. So clean. Well catered for. We bought a hamper. Amazing. Fresh food. Good quality. Drinks were super pricey but it’s a festival. At least they weren’t mid strength. We would recommend a concert/festival here to anyone. Well done Sandstone point!

Hi Davbro95, Thank you for the kind words and for taking the time to send through your review. We're so happy to hear that you enjoyed your Waterview Bar experience, it certainly is one of the best seats in the house! We've passed your feedback onto our events team and the friendly staff that you mentioned. We can't wait to see you back again soon! Kind regards

Recently visited on weekend as a local not a good idea as it normally a crazy place. We were pleasantly surprised after chatting to a security guy who gave us a few tips about eating there. The restaurant times bar menu shed times seem to clash. We always seem to be between times but there are ways around times now we understand. Great view as always

Hi skinnyyak, Thank you for taking the time out of your day to leave us your feedback. With so many different guests frequenting our hotel for different reasons we like to have a variety of different food options available! I'm so happy to hear that one of our friendly guards was able to point you in the right direction, we've passed the brilliant feedback on to him. Please feel free to call ahead and speak with our reception team if you are ever unsure on opening hours or for a restaurant reservation. Kind regards

Took the wife to Sandstone today for Valentines lunch. We have been a number of times before and have always been disappointed in the quality of seafood offerings, both from the Oyster shed and the restaurant. Today i ordered the Prawn Salad from the restaurant and was really taken back by he size and quality of the fresh prawns. They looked like the had been defrosted from a packet an would have fitted on a 50c piece. Sandstone is a beautiful location in the Moreton Bay region but as a seaside destination the seafood should be the freshest and top quality. I payed $29 for the salad(the salad was swamped in dressing) and expected half a dozen plump large prawns as i had seen in the windows at the servery. Very sad that this is the best you can do. I'm sure the the prawns in the Bucket of Prawns at $25 would be the "good ones". Please lift your game or risk loosing customers and in an area which is screaming out for good quality good value eating venues, you should be leading the way. Honestly i can get better value and quality seafood at the fish and chip shops on Bribie Island.

Hi Glen, Thank you for taking the time to send through your feedback from your lunch here on Valentines day, I do apologies that it wasn't up to your standards. I've spoken to our team of chefs and have got some info re. the prawns that I thought would be worth passing on. Over the past few weeks we have been sourcing a different kind of fresh trawler prawn that is noticeably smaller in size. With this being said, the net weight of prawn within our salad has not changed. This simply comes down to seasonal availability, we are always striving to provide our guests with the freshest products available and the change in product was to maintain our high standards. In future, please do not hesitate to speak with one of our lovely staff members on the night to voice any concerns you may be having, we never want you to leave our venue feeling unsatisfied with the meals you've ordered. Thank you again for the feedback, we hope to see you back with us again soon Kind regards

RED HOT SUMMER TOUR (Series Two) Line-Up Unveiled

Ticketmaster pre-sale: tuesday 1st august at 10am (local time).

30 July 2023 The Rockpit

red hot summer tour 2023 sandstone point

RED HOT SUMMER   TOUR  is thrilled to announce its next series of dates for the 2024 season from one of Australia’s most sought-after summer festivals.  These iconic outdoor shows will take place centre stage in Mornington, Yarra Valley, Bribie Island & Perth, and for series two, this mega-line-up will be co-headlined by SIMPLE MINDS  and ICEHOUSE .

It’s been over 40 years since Scottish superstars, SIMPLE MINDS, toured Australia for the first time in 1981 when they were invited by their good friends, ICEHOUSE. History repeats itself as they come together on stage all these decades later.  Says Jim Kerr, “ we had the best time during that six-week period, and we’re ecstatic to be able to come back and to do it all over again with our mates, Icehouse!  We love everything about this band and Australia. We are always welcomed with open arms and have such a special bond with our Aussie fans.  We can’t wait to get back there and play in some of the best outdoor locations in your beautiful country.”

Iva Davies  went on to say “back in 1981, on ICEHOUSE’s first journey overseas, we were introduced to Simple Minds and their great stage presence when we went on the same tour supporting them around the UK.  It was an exciting time and we all got on so well that we asked Simple Minds to support us when we returned to Australia.  They did and Australians became one of the most welcoming audiences in the world for them.  I’m really looking forward to our co-headlining tour next year – it will be an opportunity to relive some memories and thrilling to see how far we’ve all come since those first shows.”

With a career spanning over 45 years, ICEHOUSE is one of Australia’s most iconic bands, transcending age groups with their hit songs, well known and loved by audiences across generations, playing to sell-out, capacity audiences in Australia, New Zealand and throughout the world.  Formed by Iva Davies, the band’s frontman and musical creative force, ICEHOUSE went on to have an amazing 28 Platinum albums, eight Top 10 albums and over thirty Top 40 singles.

ICEHOUSE’s unofficial Australian anthem, Great Southern Land, has been a part of almost every Australian’s summer soundtrack for the past 40 years and in 2014, it was inducted into the National Film and Sound Archive’s Sounds of Australia registry. It’s also been remixed a number of times, most notably Bill Laswell’s  The Great Southern Mix , clocking in at almost 16 minutes, and the  Byrralku Dhangudha remix  from 1994, which features Indigenous musicians playing and singing the chorus in their own language. Its message is as current and relevant today as it was when it first appeared.

In 2017, the band received another tribute when Qantas invited the public to vote for the names of the planes for their new fleet of Dreamliner 787-9s. Out of over 60,000 name suggestions submitted, Great Southern Land won the honour of the very first plane in the fleet being named after the iconic hit.  In the same year, ICEHOUSE also celebrated 40 years of live performance with a national Australian tour and several outdoor performances in New Zealand and has continued to perform selected concerts for sell-out audiences in both countries since then.

SIMPLE MINDS are one of the UK’s most successful bands that have achieved worldwide success. Having sold over 60 million albums, they have experienced a remarkable journey since releasing their debut album  Life In A Day  in 1979. Over the course of their stunning career, SIMPLE MINDS have sold out stadiums and arenas across the globe. Constantly evolving, the band’s rousing choruses and booming atmospherics made them one of the most iconic bands of the 80s. Their trademark sound has earned them massive hits – with songs such as  Promised You A Miracle, Glittering Prize, Don’t You (Forget About Me), Alive and Kicking, Sanctify Yourself, Belfast Child  and  Let There Be Love  dominating the airwaves   globally .

A ustralia was the first country in the world, outside of the UK, to embrace SIMPLE MINDS, giving the band its first-ever hit single  Love Song  and first gold album ‘New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84)’. The love affair has continued ever since.

NOISEWORKS  provided the soundtrack to every big night in the 1980s, with rock anthems  No Lies, Take Me Back, Hot Chilli Woman, Touch , and countless others. Get ready to rock as the original members reform to honour the memory of their co-founder and guitarist, the late, great, Stuart ‘Chet’ Fraser. Jon Stevens, Steve Balbi, Kevin Nicol, and Justin Stanley will be joined by very special guest Jack Jones on guitar and vocals. With the release of their new 2022 album, along with all their legendary hits, Noiseworks will reignite a passion for rock n roll!

Daryl Braithwaite - Kickstart Summer Concert Perth 2019 | Photo Credit: Sharon Burgess

DARYL BRAITHWAITE  is an iconic Australian singer/songwriter and ARIA Hall Of Fame Inductee. As the frontman and vocalist for the 1970s band Sherbet, Braithwaite rode a wave of local and international success with songs such as  Howzat  and  Summer Love  propelling the band to superstar status.

Braithwaite went on to embark on a highly successful solo career which included a No. 1 ARIA Album Chart for his album Edge (1988), featuring the hit singles  As The Days Go By  and  One Summer . Braithwaite’s 1990 follow-up album Rise included the single  The Horses  which reached No. 1 on the ARIA Singles Chart and to this day remains an anthem for generations of Australians. In 2020, he joined a host of local and international artists to perform at Fire Fight Australia, Concert For National Bushfire Relief in front of an audience in excess of 70,000 at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium.

In 1992, Tania Doko and James Roche formed  BACHELOR GIRL , and the duo became one of the most loved Australian acts of the 90s & early 2000s, enjoying Australian and international success in Asia, Scandinavia and the US (including signing with the legendary Clive Davis at Arista Records). Standing out with their exceptional song writing and Tania’s warm, powerful vocal, both PPCA and APRA have reported a massive achievement for the band – their hit single  Buses and Trains  was the most played Australian composition on Australian radio in its first year of release and during the last 25 years overall. In 1999,  Buses and Trains  also received the coveted APRA ‘Song of the Year’ award, while the critically acclaimed debut album ‘Waiting for the Day’ spawned five chart-topping, radio-friendly singles (including  Treat Me Good  and  Permission To Shine ), reached double platinum certification and an ARIA win to the duo for ‘Producer of the Year’.

After a brief hiatus to pursue their individual musical paths as writers and producers for outside artists in Sweden and the U.K, Tania and James reunited to release their socially conscious single  Speak , in 2018. With their hit-studded and dynamic live set, Bachelor Girl have secured impressive support slots, including international heavyweights Eurythmics and The Goo Goo Dolls. More recently, the band has special guested on widely popular festival gigs such as Day on the Green (with John Farnham, Daryl Braithwaite et al.), the Red Hot Summer tour, and can also add Icehouse to the list of iconic acts they have toured with.

Hot Off The Press Publicity

The Red Hot Summer Tour returns in 2021 with a COVID-safe festival sporting a massive line-up of Australian artists. Headlined by long-time supporters of the Red Hot Summer Tour, Jimmy Barnes, Hoodoo Gurus, Jon Stevens, Diesel, Vika & Linda and Chris Cheney, the dates scheduled for Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia and Queensland are the first to be announced for the 2021 tour. New South Wales and Victoria will be added to the tour pending further easing of restrictions.

Promoter Duane McDonald says the return of the festival in 2021 has been a result of continuous hard-work to ensure the tour can be presented in a COVID-safe manner, and can continue to support the incredible music scene within Australia. “We were disappointed to cancel much of the 2020 tour,” he says. “But safety was, and always is, our first priority. We continue to work with governments and stakeholders to make sure that we can continue the Red Hot Summer Tour in 2021, and to ensure that all the shows are delivered in a COVID-safe way. We look forward to being able to announce more dates on the 2021 shortly, with Victoria and New South Wales joining the itinerary.”

Bringing together an enviable line-up of Aussie acts was paramount for the organisers, and Duane says everyone on board for the 2021 run can’t wait. “We are excited to have the opportunity to hit the road in 2021 bringing some great music experiences that the Red Hot Summer Tour has been sharing with audiences for over a decade,” he says. “Bringing together our mates in the music industry and taking the tour around Australia has always been special, but next year’s run is going to mean a lot to everyone. We’ve invited some of the artists who have been championing the tour from the very beginning and know everyone can’t wait to put on an incredible show. We look forward to making new musical memories for the next decade and can’t wait to see all the music-lovers who have supported us over the years at one of the shows in 2021.”

Tickets are only available through Ticketmaster. Punters are advised not to purchase tickets from Viagogo or other Third Party Sellers, as fraudulent tickets will not be honoured.
