Equipped with a draft collar and an extra layer of ThermoLite in the footbox, you'll stay nice and toasty when temps hover around this bag's rating. When it gets too cold, the full-length zipper marries to other Sea to Summit unisex bags for a backcountry bed cozy enough for cuddling.

Since the down is hydrophobic, you don't have to worry about heavy condensation depleting the loft of your bag. Spring Backpacking adventure

Tiny little hood

After a couple weeks of use over the past year of owning this bag, I like most everything about it: relaxed mummy style is more comfortable, nice fabric feel, it can open like a quilt when it’s warmer outside, and especially love the coupling capabilities with my partners bag. The hood however is cut in an odd shape; fully cinched it up it covers my mouth, forehead, and is open around my eyes (same thing happens with my partner in his bag, the Trek). I wish the hood when fully cinched would cover my face with the opening be around my nose/mouth to allow moisture to escape outside of the bag with my breath. This would require about 3 more inches of material coming down on the upper part of the hood. I’ve haven’t slept down to 18F yet, I was cold while going to sleep at 30F in a basic long sleeve base layers plus a puffy jacket, but then woke up and had to take the jacket off because I was so hot. Overall I love it and I just wear a hat pulled over my face to compensate for the hood.

Amazing sleeping bag

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I used it at around -10 degrees Celsius in the lodges at Himalayas, and it was perfect. Used it during November times at the Everest trekking areas. It would warm up quite fast during freezing temperatures, and kept me nice and warm. I get cold very easily, so I am all praises and grateful for this bag. I also doubled it at times with my partner’s sleeping bag and was amazing as we could cozy up. Highly recommend!

Warm and light

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Packs down so much but explodes with loft when taken out. Zipped together with the Ascent makes a double bag that is almost too warm for most applications, but even in its own it is perfectly toasty.

Great bag and features

This is my third Sea to Summit sleeping bag and a great addition to our kit. It locks into my other bag and we use it on inflatable queen size bed when car camping and it is small enough to pack away into an overnight pack when we are hiking.

Everything I'd hoped for

Tried this bag out for the first time over a relatively mild weather weekend (40 degrees at night) and am very impressed. It's super soft and lofty. I'm 5'6" 150lbs and the regular size had plenty of wiggle room for me to feel comfortable in many sleeping positions (mostly side) and not claustrophobic at all. I wore a light layer both nights, light socks, and no hat. Snuggled in with the hood cinched up. I'm a notoriously cold sleeper, but I woke up in the middle of both nights super sweaty and had to unzip the hood! It's clearly built for colder weather and I'm looking forward to putting it through its paces. Also for reference, I was car camping during this trip and used a Therm-a-rest Luxury Map sleeping pad with a high R-value.

Not as warm as it states

I want to love this bag. Its so soft and comfy. Super easy to pack down. However I freeze at night in this bag when the weather is around 46 ferinhieght Which is no where close that what the rating is. I even use their sleep matt for colder weather. I've started wearing many layers when using the bag and I'm still so cold I cant sleep. Wish i could write a better review because I love sea to summit products. However, being cold is the worst. The matt is comfy tho. And if it's not cold outside the bag is great.

The one thing that really gets me thinking is what sleeping bag is best for me and with sleeping bag manufacturers really pushing the design and construction boundaries now so its definitely a good time to explore.

Recently I had the opportunity to test out Sea to Summit’s Journey Jo II sleeping bag which has a tapered rectangular shape designed for women that provides a great balance of space and warmth. The Journey Jo II is a 650+ Loft ULTRA-DRY Down™ down sleeping bag which combines warmth and good compression when packed. This bag sits at the lower end of the middle of Sea to Summit’s range. That’s reflected in the weight which is a bit heavy and the price which is very competitive. The Journey Jo II has a range of great features including:

• Extra down overall
• THERMOLITE® panels under the foot area to help keep heels and ankles warmer
• A women’s specific cut that is wider at the hip and narrower at the shoulder
• A large internal security pocket for keeping valuables close or batteries warm

So how did it go? The Journey Jo II has a neck tube which sits comfortably and cozily around your neck to eliminate drafts as well as a zip baffle to prevent cold entering the bag via the zip. This is a minor point but I would prefer a hood that is a bit larger to ease snuggling. For me there was a good balance between room to move and closeness that minimises airflow.

The Journey Jo II has a female comfort rating of -8° Celcius. I took it down to around 3° Celcius and I was quite comfortable and warm. However, to get close to -8° Celcius I would need to be wearing thermals and would opt for a thermal bag liner – all of which is reasonable for temperatures in that range. Also when my arms were positioned off my sleeping mat on the cold ground, I noticed the difference in comfort level.

In terms of length, the regular version is designed for people up to 170 cm tall. I am 165 cm and I found the Journey Jo II to be a little on the short side. The long version is designed for people up to 183 cm but that would be too long for me. Maybe I just need to position my feet upright! The Journey Jo II does have a zipper on the foot compartment which allows you to stretch out and cool your toes in warm weather.

Sea to Summit sleeping bags have a handy feature that assists you in navigating their range – the darker the colour in a particular range, the warmer the bag. The Journey Jo II which can take you to -8° Celsius is dark green in colour and the Journey Jo I which is rated to -1° Celsius is light green in colour. This clever bit of guidance is very handy when you’re staring at the wall of Sea to Summit sleeping bags in your local outdoor store.

While this bag has plenty of features as a cheaper bag in the range it uses a lower grade down which makes it heavier and less compressible and it only has two zips whereas the unisex Sea to Summit Ascent II has three. While still a great bag this one less zip reduces the versatility but with that the price is also lower.

So did the Journey Jo II make it to my list of possible sleeping bag options? Yes it did. And at this stage, it is close to the top of the list although I still prefer a lighter weight more compressible bag. If you are looking for a warm high grade bag that doesn’t break the bank and aren’t too concerned about the weight and bulk, then the Journey Jo II is for you.

• Separate foot zip so you can vent hot tootsies
• We Don't Like
• I would have preferred the hood to be a bit larger – more generous hood sizing would make this bag great
• A bit on the heavy and bulky side
• A great sleeping bag for most hikers who aren’t looking for an ultralight or ultra compact bag

Vertical baffles over the chest section ensure the down insulation cannot migrate or shift to the outside of the bag during sleep, creating cold spots. A side block baffle construction maintains the 60/40 fill ratio, keeping more down on the top of the bag for maximum insulation. Lightweight fabrics reduce weight and packed bulk while the two-way #5 YKK full length side zip and separate foot zip, allows the bag to open out completely and double as a quilt. The foot zip is perfect for extra ventilation or to provide freedom of movement for your feet. The 3D side-wall baffle ensures that down can loft to the very edge of the bag, maximising insulation, while the panelled hood draws in tight when needed or lies flat for use in warmer weather. The oversized zipper draft tube uses anti-snag materials to prevent the zipper catching and the soft-touch 20D lining fabric is highly breathable yet also down proof. Completing the thoughtful design features of this classic down bag, Sea To Summit have included a large internal security pocket, perfect for keeping valuables close or batteries warm.

What's the difference between a synthetic and down sleeping bag.

Synthetic Sleeping Bags: still insulates when wet. Up-front cost is lower, but heavier and bulkier and have a shorter lifespan. 

Down Sleeping Bags: not ideal in very wet environments. Higher up-front cost, but lighter, packs smaller and lasts much longer.

Can you sleep on your side in mummy sleeping bag?

The cut of mummy sleeping bags varies between brands - some are really tight. Sea to Summit Spark sleeping bags fit snugly but still allow side sleeping. Ascent, Trek, Traverse and Venture sleeping bags have a broader mummy cut that is perfect for side sleepers.

Is this sleeping bag machine washable?

Do not wash a sleeping bag in a top-loader washing machine - a front-loader with a wool or silk program is OK. Use down soap (supermarket detergent residue sticks insulation fibers together). Dry the bag in a dryer (cool or warm) with a couple of clean tennis balls.

How do I care for/ store my sleeping bag?

Make sure your sleeping bag is completely dry before storing (in a cool, dry place) in a bag or pouch that will allow the bag to loft up. Pro tip - use a liner to reduce frequency of washing. 

How to pack a sleeping bag in a backpack?

Pack bulkier sleeping bags in a compression sack (compression dry bag for wet environments). Pack compact sleeping bags in an eVac Dry Bag. Pro-tip: always have your sleeping bag inside your pack at the bottom: mounted externally, they can snag on branches.
