12 Top Things to Do in Sikkim, India

tourist attractions of sikkim

orpheus26 / Getty Images

Bordered by the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, Bhutan, Nepal, and West Bengal, Sikkim has long been regarded as one of the last Himalayan utopias. Although the state in India's northeast is small, its vertical terrain makes it slow to traverse, so it can take hours to travel what looks like a short distance. Because of its remoteness and the fact that permits are sometimes required , Sikkim isn't the most accessible area to visit, but it is filled with gorgeous gems that adventurous travelers won't want to miss.

The area is certainly one of the most energetic and soothing to the soul with its mountainous beauty and ancient Tibetan Buddhist culture. Don't miss the top attractions in Sikkim, from monasteries galore to giant Buddha statues, river rafting adventures, wildlife sanctuaries, and plenty more.

Gaze at One of the World's Tallest Mountains

saiko3p / Getty Images

Gangtok, Sikkim's capital, is situated on a cloudy ridge 5,413 feet above sea level. When the clouds clear, it's possible to see all the way to Khangchendzonga's soaring peaks—at 28,169 feet (8,586 meters), it's the world's third-highest mountain. Khangchendzonga National Park was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2016. The city is refreshingly clean and well organized, and most tourists spend a couple of days there to make travel arrangements and see the sights. It's a popular base for those heading off on treks.

Get to Gangtok from Sikkim's Pakyong Airport, or take a four-hour drive from Siliguri in West Bengal, where the nearest train station is. The next closest airport, at Bagdogra, is about 45 minutes from Siliguri.

Meditate at a Monastery

Tai Power Seeff / Getty Images

Proving that Sikkim is a marvelous place for meditation, over 200 monasteries dot the divine hilltops. The most visited of these sacred buildings in Sikkim are Rumtek , the state's largest, which overlooks Gangtok; Pemayangtse (near Pelling in West Sikkim); and Tashiding (also in West Sikkim). Other monasteries that are worth visiting include the Karma Kagyu monastery with its 200-year-old murals (in Phodong in North Sikkim), the Enchey monastery (in Gangtok), and the old Sanga Choeling monastery (only accessible on foot from Pelling).

The monasteries hold many festivals, particularly around Losar, the Tibetan Buddhist holiday honoring the new year in February/March. Enchey also hosts a Buddhist Cham festival featuring music and dance in January/February. It is recommended that visitors confirm event dates with individual monasteries they plan to visit.

Check out the Chinese Border

Nathu La—a mountain pass in the East Sikkim district two hours (53km) east of Gangtok—was a major passageway on the Old Silk Route between India and Tibet before it was closed in 1962. The pass connects Sikkim with China's Tibet Autonomous Region. The border consists of a lone barbed wire fence, and you'll get the strange thrill of seeing the Chinese soldiers on the other side.

Unfortunately, only Indian citizens are allowed to travel to the pass, and only on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. A special permit is also required, which can be obtained through a registered travel agency in Gangtok.

Ride a Yak at a Glacial Lake

Partha Dalal Photography / Getty Images

With a permit from the Tourism And Civil Aviation Department in Gangtok, foreigners can go up to the beautiful and beloved Tsomgo Lake, also called Changu Lake, just 17 kilometers from Nathu La. This spectacular glacial lake at the high altitude of 12,400 feet (3,780 meters) remains frozen during the winter season until May and is known for its water color changing with the seasons. The lake offers lovely views of the mountains that surround it.

Visitors may also spot various bird species, including Brahminy ducks—which resemble geese. Animals seen nearby include the red panda, an endangered creature the size of a domestic cat. To encounter a much larger mammal, try a quirky and possibly once-in-a-lifetime experience: You and the kids can ride a huge yak at the lake. These ox-like animals carry people through a variety of weather, which sometimes includes snow.

Experience Flora and Fauna Sanctuaries

partha dalal photography / Getty Images.

Sikkim is renowned for its astounding variety of animals—including nearly 550 species of birds and 700 species of butterflies. The state also boasts 600 varieties of orchids and 30 species of rhododendron. Check with the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department regarding tours, or explore gorgeous landscapes, flowers, and wildlife on your own at any of the many sanctuaries.

For breathtaking mountain views and to see numerous birds and other animals, check out Varsey Rhododendron Sanctuary in the Singalila Range in the southwest corner of West Sikkim during late spring. The  Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary near Ravangla in South Sikkim and the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary by Lachung—with colorful flowers and mountain views galore—are other highlights to check out.

Closer to Gangtok, visit the Deorali Orchid Sanctuary in south Gangtok (from March to early May and the end of September to early December), and Fambong Lho Wildlife Sanctuary around an hour west of Gangtok is the place to spot Himalayan black bears and red pandas. Kyongnosla Alpine Sanctuary , located east of Gangtok, is on the way to Tsomgo Lake and Nathu La (visit from June until October). You can also stop off at Jawaharlal Nehru Botanical Garden on the way to Rumtek monastery.

Trek at Yuksom and the Dzongri Trail

Amitabha Gupta / Getty Images

Sikkim is a trekker's paradise and historical Yuksom is the gateway for treks towards Mount Khangchendzonga. The route from Yuksom to Dzongri Peak and Rathong Glacier—and, if you're up for the challenge, further on to Goecha Peak—is the most popular trek in Sikkim, passing through the unspoiled forests, magnificent rhododendron gardens, and powerful rivers of Khangchendzonga National Park. March to May is the ideal time to go; allow seven to 10 days from Yuksom to Goecha Peak and back. Additional permits are mandatory for foreigners.

If you want to go on an organized trek, Mountain Tours, Treks & Travels gets excellent reviews and is run by the family of mountaineer Late Da Namgel Sherpa, who was part of the first successful Mount Everest expedition team in 1953.

See Dazzling Scenery and a High Altitude Lake

Sukanta Kalai / Getty Images

In far North Sikkim, six hours from Gangtok and 9,000 feet (2,743 meters) above sea level near the Tibetan/Chinese border, Lachung and the Yumthang Valley dazzle visitors with dramatic pristine scenery. Lachung is the base camp for the renowned Rhododendron Valley Trek from Yumthang Valley to Lachen Valley. Other attractions in the area are Lachung monastery, Yumesamdong (Zero Point), and the astonishing high-altitude Gurudongmar Lake —one of the world's highest lakes, at more than 17,000 feet (5,181 meters) above sea level.

North Sikkim is a restricted area: To visit you'll need a special permit through a registered tour company in Gangtok. Note that the Yumthang Valley is closed from December to March due to heavy snow, and foreigners are only permitted as far as the Chopta Valley (they cannot visit Gurudongmar Lake).

View Mount Khangchendzonga at Sunrise

Soumya Bandyopadhyay Photography / Getty Images

Pelling, a 4-5 hour drive west of Gangtok, may be a charmless small town, but it's the place to go for unparalleled views of Mount Khangchendzonga at dawn. Stay at Ifseen Villa, one of the top budget guesthouses and homestays in the Indian Himalayas.

Monasteries are the other main attraction, along with the ruins of Rabdentse , the royal capital of Sikkim from 1670 to 1814. Its location on a ridge provides a wonderful viewpoint. Half-day and all-day tours depart from Pelling and cover the major sights in the area, such as Khecheopalri Lake, Pemayangtse Monastery, Sangay Falls, and more.

Find Peace at Buddha Park in Ravangla

RNMitra / Getty Images

On the way from Gangtok to Pelling, Ravangla is most notable for its Buddha Park with a towering 130-foot (40 meter) golden Buddha statue surrounded by manicured gardens and a nice walkway. The Ralang Monastery in nearby Ralang also houses a substantially sized golden Buddha. You'll hear the many monks chanting in the early morning and mid-afternoon in the forested environment. A number of other area monasteries can be visited as well.

Halfway between Ravangla and Namchi, you'll find the picturesque Temi Tea Garden, known as one of the world's best. The tranquil Cherry Resort is nestled amidst Sikkim's only tea garden.

Explore Giant Statues in Namchi

Jane Sweeney / Getty Images

Namchi, South Sikkim's capital, is also famous for its giant statues. The Buddhist statue of Guru Padmasambhava (credited with introducing Tantric Buddhism to the Himalayan region), reaches around 118 feet tall (36 meters) and occupies a commanding position on Samdruptse Hill, 7,000 feet (2,134 meters) above sea level. Not quite as tall but perhaps more impressive is the white 108-foot (33-meter) Hindu Lord Shiva statue at Solophuk Hill, south of Namchi. The epic complex surrounding the statue contains guesthouses and temples, including replicas of the holy Char Dham pilgrimage sites .

Have a River Rafting Adventure

Yathin / Flickr / CC BY NC ND 2.0

River rafting is a popular adventure activity in Sikkim, and the Teesta River offers some world class opportunities. The major route is Makha-Sirwani-Bardang-Rangpo. Grade II to IV rapids are interspersed with placid patches to float along, and plenty of white sandy beaches exist for overnight camping. High cliffs and gorges, along with boulder-strewn river beds, add to the thrill.

The Rangeet River, with its more turbulent waters, also offers advanced rafting opportunities from Sikip-Jorethang-Majitar-Melli.

Stay in the Tiny Village of Zuluk

Courtesy of TripAdvisor

For those who want to get off the tourist trail, Zuluk is a tiny village nearly 10,000 feet (3,048 meters) above sea level in East Sikkim. Once part of the Old Silk Route for traders, its main attraction is the sight of Mount Khangchendzonga from Lungthung and Thambi View Point ; those who get carsick might want to avoid the winding road and its many hairpin turns.

The landscape varies greatly depending on the time of year. It's carpeted in wildflowers from August to September and covered in snow from January until April. After the snow clears, there's abundant bird life.

As Zuluk is a military-controlled area near the Chinese border, it's off-limits for foreigners. Indian citizens need to obtain a permit —inquire at a registered tourism agency, which also may offer Old Silk Route tour packages.

' src=

Are you planning a trip to Sikkim soon? If yes, then you cannot miss out on visiting these best places to visit in Sikkim!

Sikkim is a gorgeous place to visit in North East and offers a vibrant and unique landscape. It is the second smallest state in India, but this doesn’t dim the beauty and charm that exudes out of every corner of this wonderful state.

From magical lakes to breathtaking mountain peaks, you will find all sorts of amazing places to visit here.

That’s not all, the people here are quite lovely too and will make you fall in love with this place. So, whether you are a mountain lover or a nature enthusiast, Sikkim is the perfect destination for all kinds of travelers.

If you are confused about where all you can go in Sikkim, then check out this list of the 15 best places to visit in Sikkim.

Gangtok, North Sikkim

Gangtok, Sikkim’s capital and one of the best places to visit in Sikkim is one of India’s cleanest hill stations.

It is a well-known center for Tibetan Buddhists and the starting point for getting permits to hike and trek to other Sikkim locations.

But that’s not all: Gangtok’s mall road is a popular shopping destination. It is also one of the most popular tourist attractions in Sikkim because, at night, the entire street is illuminated with golden lights.

You will likewise find authentic Sikkimese food here which makes it such a pleasant visit. In addition, you can get to the well-known Tsomgo Lake, the Nathula Pass, and the northern Sikkim region from this location.

Lingdum Monastery (Ranka Monastery)

Lingdum Monastery, one of the best places to visit near Gangtok, is rarely visited because few people are aware of it or care about it.

Additionally, because it is not included in the standard sightseeing packages, the taxi drivers won’t tell you about this monastery when you hire a private taxi.

But if you’ve always been interested in monks’ lives and want to learn more about Buddhist culture, you should definitely plan a trip here.

At this monastery, you can take in the views of the mountains and enjoy the prayer chants that are always playing.

Ban Jhakri Falls

Another of the top places to visit in Sikkim, particularly in Gangtok is the Ban Jhankri Falls which is situated inside Ban Jhakri Park.

Relax and take in yet another gorgeous fall in Sikkim at this ideal location. Despite not being in the same natural setting as the Kanchenjunga waterfalls, the waterfall is still breathtakingly beautiful.

You can also dress up as a Sikkimese at a few nearby food and souvenir stands. For just 100 INR, you can even have your pictures taken in traditional attire.

Tip Top Viewpoint

Last, but not least, you need to visit the Tip Top Viewpoint, also popularly known as the Tashi Viewpoint.

This is one of the best places to visit in Sikkim as you get to observe the various surrounding mountains. And although it is freezing cold at this point, a good hot cup of coffee can do wonders while you enjoy an amazing view that complements it.

Where to Stay in Gangtok

Since Gangtok is one of the top places to visit in Sikkim, you will find several accommodation options here.

Here are a few options for different budget ranges:

  • For a budget-friendly stay, I would recommend staying in  Tagalong Backpackers  (for backpackers and solo travelers) and  Muscatel Bellevue .
  • For mid-range stays, you can check out  Bamboo Retreat ,  Netuk House , and  Enchanted Forest Farmstay .
  • For a luxury stay, you can consider  Mayfair Spa Resort & Casino ,  Sikkim Villa Tosca – A Boutique Aparthotel , and  The Elgin Norkhill – Resort and Spa .

tourist attractions of sikkim

Rumtek Monastery, North Sikkim

Located at a distance of 22 km from Gangtok is the Rumtek Monastery which is also one of the best places to visit in Sikkim.

At an elevation of approximately 5000ft, this monastery is the largest and most important Buddhist monastery in Sikkim. The monastery houses thousands of witness monks who enjoy a normal lifestyle here and study more about Buddhist rituals and cultures.

With beautiful architecture and colors, this monastery will leave you speechless but that is nothing compared to the view offered from the top of the monastery.

From the terrace, you can enjoy a gorgeous view of Gangtok City and fall in love with it.

tourist attractions of sikkim

Dzongu, North Sikkim

Occupied by the Lepcha people group, Dzongu Valley is another of the most astonishing spots to visit in Sikkim as it offers the most stunning views of the Kanchenjunga mountain.

Dzongu is a lush, serene, and beautiful location that is bounded in the southeast by the Teesta River and in the northeast by the Tholung Chu River.

The majority of the houses here are made of wood, and their specialty is handwoven clothing, cane, and bamboo products. There is a lot of vegetation here.

Dzongu has a dreamlike setting because it is covered in a thick canopy of jungles.

When you visit, you can hear the chirping of the birds and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. This valley is about 20 to 25 kilometers from Mangan, and a permit is required.

One of the best places to visit in Sikkim for stunning views and quiet time is this offbeat location, which has very few tourists.

Lachung, North Sikkim

Lachung is a charming little village in the north of Sikkim, close to the border with Tibet.

It is one of the most magical places to visit in Sikkim. Lachung, which is home to the Lachung monastery that was built in the 19th century, is a magical location that will make your Sikkim trip one to remember.

Although snowfall does not occur frequently in this area, it does occasionally occur, and when it does, the locations end up covered in a thick layer of snow, giving the impression of a magical Christmas Eve!

Lachung is surrounded by apple orchards and has rows of wooden houses and pine trees lining its narrow lanes.

It also serves as the starting point for the Yumthang Valley, where you can find several rhododendron species. Additionally, this valley’s hot springs, waterfalls, and pine forests draw a lot of visitors.

Where to Stay in Lachung

If you are taking a package, then you don’t need to find separate accommodation in Lachung.

Here are a few options to consider:

  • For a budget-friendly stay, you can check out OurGuest Bichu Homestay and Hotel Green Tara.
  • For a mid-range stay, you can consider OurGuest Lachung Homestay, Summit Alpine Resort, and Summit Khangri Karpo Retreat and Spa.
  • For a luxurious stay, you can stay at Etho Metho Hotel by RightClique and Jewel Kongchen Retreat & Spa.

snow covered town best places to visit in sikkim

Yumthang Valley, North Sikkim

Yumthang Valley, also known as Sikkim’s “Valley of Flowers,” is at an elevation of 3,564 meters.

It is one of the best places to visit in Sikkim, the valley is filled with natural hot springs and meadows. Throughout the late spring months, you can observe the blossoming of a few assortments of blossoms, turning this spot very beautiful.

The Himalayan mountains surround this valley, which gets a lot of snow every year.

Additionally, the valley’s proximity to the well-known Teesta River lends it a dreamlike and magical quality. We had such a strong desire to visit this location, but it was closed when we were there.

So, if you get the chance, don’t miss out on visiting this beautiful location.

Where to Stay in Yumthang Valley

There are no hotels or homestays in Yumthang. Visitors need to stay in Lachung and make a day trip to Yumthang Valley and Zero Point.

Lachen, North Sikkim

If you want to spend some time at the Gurudongmar lake, Lachen is one of the best places to visit in Sikkim.

Lachen, which translates to “Big Pass,” is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Sikkim and is also promoted by the government. This town requires a permit, but it is well worth it.

You can visit Gurudongmar Lake as well as Kanchenjunga National Park, trek to the valleys and hills nearby, visit monasteries, see wildlife, and more from this location. Because of this, it is one of Sikkim’s best tourist spots.

Where to Stay in Lachen

  • For budget-friendly accommodations, you can check out Hotel Eco Nest and Delight Lachen Heritage.
  • For mid-range accommodations, you can check out Delight The Fortuna Lachen, OurGuest Dhatup Homestay, and Rufina Blue Pine.
  • For a luxury stay, you can check out Summit Panghen Metok Hotel.

Gurudongmar Lake, North Sikkim

Gurudongmar Lake, at 17,800 feet, is one of the world’s highest lakes and one of the most beautiful places to visit in Sikkim.

This Sikkim holy lake is quite mystical and must be visited due to the numerous legends that surround it.

During the winter, this lake freezes, and you’ll find a lot of Yaks, blue sheep, and other animals there, circulating the lake at that point.

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to visit Gurudongmar Lake. I can assure you that this location will undoubtedly be the trip’s highlight.

Tragically, the lake was shut during our time in any case, but we will surely return to visit this mysterious lake soon.

Where to Stay near Gurudongmar Lake

There are no hotels or homestays close to Gurudongmar Lake. You have to stay in Lachen and then plan a day trip to Gurudongmar Lake.

Katao, North Sikkim

One of the offbeat places to visit in Sikkim while exploring Northern Sikkim, Katao is a small village that is located around 24 km from Lachung. This is one of the least visited places in Sikkim but should definitely be on your list if you love snow and quiet surrounding.

Usually, this place is covered with a thick layer of ice which makes it difficult to reach the actual village and only army vehicles will be able to cross these snow-laden roads. However, the journey itself is wonderful and everyone should experience it once.

You can go to this place by just paying 200-250 INR more to your driver who is taking you on the North Sikkim package. Just ask him to make a few hours’ stop at this beautiful village. Trust me, it will be the best 200 INR you have ever spent.

Where to Stay in Katao

Since Katao is one of the least known places to visit in Sikkim, there are no hotels or homestays available to book online. So, your best option would be to book a stay in Lachung or look for a local stay after reaching Katao.

Ravangala, South Sikkim

Ravangla, another of Sikkim’s awe-inspiring destinations, will undoubtedly take your breath away.

This place is unique and quite magical thanks to the colorful Tibetan flags, cloudy blue skies, and lush green mountains. The 130 feet-tall Buddha statue is one of the best features of this town.

Ravangala, in South Sikkim, is best known for its Buddha Park, where you can walk among the Tibetan flags, huge prayer wheels, and green trees while the statue stands head and shoulders above everything else.

You will find a prayer room where you can sit and meditate for a while beneath the statue.

In addition, there are a number of exquisite Buddha statues and paintings in this location that provide additional information about the Buddha and depict his life.

One of the best places to visit in Sikkim, Ravangla is one of the few places that combines life, spirituality, and beauty.

Where to Stay in Ravangala

Since Ravangala is one of the most well-known places to visit in Sikkim, you will find several good accommodation options available here in different budget ranges.

  • For a budget-friendly stay, you can check out Rain Drop Guest House, Hilltop Rabong Resort, Seven Mirrorlake Homestay, and Dokhampa Homestay.

Tsomgo Lake, East Sikkim

One of the most enchanting and ethereal Sikkim Tourist Places to visit, Tsomgo Lake or Changu Lake looks even more magnificent when covered in snow.

Situated at a height of 12,400ft., this is one of the highest lakes in India and is one of the top places to visit near Gangtok. The snow covers this amazing place for at least 9 months a year and offers a classic magical setting to the place.

What’s even more interesting is that during the summers, the lake water turns the shade of turquoise and beautifully reflects the sky and the nearby peaks. During snowy months, you can enjoy playing in the snow and have the time of your life here.

Nathula Pass, East Sikkim

Another one of the top places to visit in Sikkim, Nathula Pass gives you a chance to touch the border between China and India, an opportunity quite scarce.

In historic times, Nathula Pass was a part of the ‘Silk Road’ and it is also one of the highest motorable passes in the world.

It is not visible from the main road. Yes, that’s right! You have to make your way a little inside the mountain to actually come across the waterfall and this is one of the reasons why this is one of the best places to visit in Sikkim.

You can easily spend a few hours sitting beside this waterfall and can eat or drink at the nearby stalls.

Khecheopalri Lake

Another one of those amazing place to visit in Sikkim is the Khecheopalri Lake, also known as the Wishing Lake. A place of worship, this place is surrounded by Buddhist flags that make this place both colorful and positive.

Sikkim Tourism - A Complete Travel Guide

A journey to Sikkim India means awakening the senses and discovering the pristine beauty of the land. What one will find most fascinating is the journey itself-a continuum of sights, sounds, and feelings. Sikkim is a dream that one can realize and enjoy now that the area is open to all. It is a state cloaked in the mystery of remoteness and far away from the din and bustle of the modern world.

To know about the state’s best time to visit, how to reach, and top attractions, we’ve put together a travel guide for Sikkim.

Located in the eastern Himalayas, Sikkim is bound by Tibet (China) in the north, West Bengal in the south, Tibet and Bhutan in the east, and Nepal in the west. The state is spread below Mount Kanchenjunga (8,534 m), the third-highest peak in the world. It is cut into steep escarpments in the north, except in the Lachung and Lachen valleys, which are thinly populated. The Rangeet and the Teesta are the state's major river systems that cut through the valleys. Many hot water springs like Phur-Cha, Ralang Sachu, Yumthang, and Momay are also available in Sikkim. The snowline starts at around 5,248 meters in Sikkim.

History of Sikkim

Buddhism, the major religion in Sikkim, arrived from Tibet in the 13th century. It took its distinctive Sikkimese form four centuries later, when three Tibetan monks of the old Nyingamapa order, dissatisfied with the rise of the reformist Gelupas, migrated to Yuksom in western Sikkim. Having consulted an oracle, they went to Gangtok looking for a certain Phuntsong Namgyal, whom they crowned as the first Chogyal or 'Righteous King' of Denzong in 1642. He was soon recognized by Tibet and brought sweeping reforms. His kingdom was far larger than today's Sikkim and included Kalimpong and parts of western Bhutan.

Over the centuries, the territory was lost to the Bhutanese, the Nepalese, and the British. The British policy to diminish the strong Tibetan influence resulted in the import of workers from Nepal to work in the tea plantations of Sikkim, Darjeeling, and Kalimpong, and these soon outnumbered the indigenous population.

After India's Independence, the eleventh Chogyal, Tashi Namgyal, strove hard to prevent the dissolution of his kingdom. Officially, Sikkim was a protectorate of India. However, India's role became increasingly crucial with the Chinese military build-up along the northern borders, culminating in an invasion early in the 1960s. The next king Palden Thondup was a weak ruler and, in 1975, succumbed to the demands of the Nepalese majority of becoming a part of India.

Fairs & Festivals of Sikkim

The people of Sikkim celebrate the anniversaries relating to birth, enlightenment, and nirvana of the Buddha, besides the Buddhist New Year and the harvest festivals. In addition, several festivals are celebrated in Gangtok and its adjoining areas.

The Buddhist festival of Bumchu is held in the Tashiding Gompa during January and also in the  Dubdi Gompa .

The festival of Chaam is held in the  Enchey Gompa  during January-February and is marked by dancing. This dance is a mask dance held every month at Gangtok, Pemayangtse, and Phodong.

Losar marks the Tibetan New Year and is celebrated during February-March at Pemayangtse and Rumtek. Tse Chu is a Buddhist dance held in May at Rumtek. Saga Dawa (held in Gangtok during May) and Drukpa Teshi (celebrated statewide during July) mark the Buddha's first teaching anniversary. Phang Lhabsol is a mask dance celebrated statewide during August. Dasain celebrated during September-October, is marked by the exchange of gifts and animal sacrifice.

Best Time to Visit Sikkim

Due to its location and altitude, there is an immense variation in climate and vegetation in Sikkim. In the state, the climate is tropical up to 1,624 m, temperate between 1,624 m-4,222 m, alpine above 4,222 m, and snowbound at 5,248 m.

Summer - The   best time to visit Sikkim  is between mid-March and June but especially April and May when the rhododendrons and orchids are in full bloom. However, temperatures can be high, especially in the valleys.

Monsoon - During monsoons (June to September), rivers and roads become impassable, though plants damaged by the constant rain spring back to life again and bloom towards the end of August. October, when orchids bloom once again, and November tend to have the clearest weather of all.

Weather and Climate

Due to its steep altitude gain over a short distance, the climate of Sikkim changes swiftly throughout the region. The upper regions are extremely cold whereas the southern part experiences humid weather similar to its neighbor on the south. Due to altitude variation and the great diversity in landforms, even the small 7000 km area of Sikkim experiences tropical, temperate, and alpine climates, though most of the inhabited areas of Sikkim experience temperate climates.

Rainfall is heavy and uniform in the months from May to early October. July is the wettest month of the year. Sikkim records its maximum temperature usually in the months of July and August and minimum temperatures in the months of December and January. The state experiences five seasons – summer, monsoon, autumn, winter, and spring in varying degrees. Winters are freezing cold, especially in North Sikkim. Temperature, here, often drops below freezing point causing snowfall. Here, monsoons are trickier. Landslides are not uncommon during this time.

Best time to visit

The pleasant weather of the autumn season can be enjoyed from late September to early November before winter sets in. This is the best time to visit Sikkim. The weather is not yet cold enough to warrant heavy woolens but cool enough to need light shawls and jackets. But starting in November, the northern part of Sikkim starts getting restricted due to snowfall and road blockages. So, if you have places like Lachen and Lachung in your travel itinerary, late spring and early summer may be the best option for travel.

In the months from March to May, the weather remains pleasant enough. Roads to North Sikkim and also popular tourist attractions like Tsongmo Lake, and Baba Mandir open in March, sometimes early April depending on the amount of snowfall. And if you are a nature lover and would like to see the Rhododendrons in full bloom, March to May is the best time. The trekking season in Varsey starting in March does attract a lot of nature enthusiasts from all over.
