Serra de Tramuntana

Serra de Tramuntana is the mountain range along the north-west coast of Mallorca. It is a protected area and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011. It has a length of around 90 km, with a maximum width of 15 km and an altitude of 1,445 meters. It covers more than 1,000 square km   (around 30% of the island), in 18 municipalities, with a population of some 8,000 in the central areas and another 40,000 in the buffer zone.

The Serra de Tramuntana is the largest protected area in the Balearic Islands; it hosts the wildest sites and the greatest diversity of habitats: Holm oak and Aleppo pine forests, Mediterranean scrub (garrigue), olive groves, inland and sea cliffs, gravel coves, medium and high mountains and hidden agricultural valleys. We will be looking for  Cinereous and  Griffon vultures, Bonelli’s and Booted eagles, Peregrine, Raven, Blue rock thrush, Balearic warbler, Wren, etc. We will also have the opportunity to find several endemic plant  species.

The tour   focuses on two of the main birding sites in the Tramuntana mountains:  Mortitx valley and Cúber reservoir. In the morning we visit Mortitx, a mountain valley with vineyards, olive groves, Aleppo pine forest and Mediterranean scrub (garrigue).  The route is about 7 km with some gentle slopes .

tramuntana tours mallorca

In the afternoon we do a circular tour around Cúber reservoir  (4,5 km) where w e can find again  Cinereous and Griffon vultures, Booted eagle, Blue rock thrush, Balearic warbler, as well as Osprey fishing in the reservoir. The route is flat and the path is very easy.

Duration: full day. Mortitx and Cúber reservoir can be visited separately in a half day tour each.

Practical recommendations: in spring, autumn and winter bring your raincoat and waterproof walking/trekking shoes. At the end of spring and in summer a hat and sun protection are highly recommended. And of course, do not forget your binoculars, telescope and camera. Remember to bring enough water and your lunch.

Discover the Hidden Beauty of Mallorca on the Trans Tramuntana Hiking Adventure

  • Arrival & Departure

If the idea of fragrant olive groves, sweeping vistas of the Mediterranean Sea, and the savory delights of Empanadas Mallorquinas piques your holiday senses, then the ‘Trans Tramuntana’ hiking expedition in northern Mallorca is your perfect escape. This well-marked trail offers a serene journey through the largest Balearic Island’s lesser-known side, where untamed landscapes of grass and rock await your exploration. Along the way, you’ll follow ancient pilgrimage routes, revealing a Mallorca you may never have known existed.

Exploring the Trans Tramuntana in Mallorca

The Serra de Tramuntana, nestled in the northwest of Mallorca, is both the path and the ultimate destination of this hiking adventure. This mountain range boasts enchanting trails meandering through pristine landscapes and unspoiled nature. What sets this week-long journey apart are the diverse hiking experiences it offers—sometimes along the rugged coastline, other times through the rugged inland terrain. Each new day of hiking unveils a different facet of Mallorca’s hidden beauty.

Highlights of the Mallorca Hiking Expedition:

Mallorca’s Pilgrimage Routes: Traverse magnificent pilgrimage paths between Pollença and Lluc, winding through holm oak forests and picturesque orchards. The culmination of these routes is the historic Lluc Monastery, where you can even spend a night in its timeless ambiance.

A Journey by Vintage Train: Conclude your Mallorca hiking week with a memorable ride on the ‘Red Lightning,’ a vintage train that takes you from Pt. Sóller to Palma—a delightful inclusion in your hiking holiday!

Idyllic Landscapes: Discover the unspoiled beauty of the Serra de Tramuntana, which showcases a whole new dimension of the Balearic Island, far from the well-trodden tourist paths.

Essential Details for Your Hiking Trip in Northern Mallorca

Your adventure in the Serra de Tramuntana begins on the Alcúdia peninsula, specifically in Port de Alcúdia. Your inaugural coastal hike treats you to breathtaking sea views along the peninsula’s scenic coast. Over the following days, you’ll gradually acquaint yourself with the peaceful and secluded Mallorca, culminating in the vibrant atmosphere of the island’s capital, Playa de Palma. These mountain hikes typically span between ten and 15 kilometers, demanding both sure-footedness and stamina, as the trails can be quite rocky.

*This tour is based on a minimum of two participants. Only the services mentioned above are included in the price.
