12 Major Mistakes to Avoid on a Florida Vacation, According to a Lifelong Resident

The biggest and most common mistakes travelers make in Florida — and how to avoid them.

florida travel advice

You don’t have to be a travel expert to plan a trip to Florida, but there are some insider tips that are worth knowing before you embark on a vacation to the Sunshine State. For starters, Florida isn’t all beaches and theme parks , though there’s nothing wrong with hitting both of those places during your getaway. As a lifelong resident, I've picked up a few tricks along the way. Read on for 12 mistakes to avoid on your next Florida vacation.

1. Only Spending Time at the Beach

While there's no doubt that Florida's beaches are world-class, failing to venture beyond the coast and deeper into the state's vast array of offerings is one of the biggest mistakes visitors can make.

Inland Florida will impress even the most outdoorsy and adventurous nature lovers — there's abundant wildlife in the Everglades , state parks, and even an underwater national park — while the state is peppered from coast to coast with museums, festivals, and other unique experiences.

Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales boasts 250 acres of lush gardens and a bell tower, the historic streets of St. Augustine transport visitors back in time, and quaint towns like Mount Dora beckon with hometown charm. You can even watch a NASA rocket launch at the Kennedy Space Center .

The beach is certainly a highlight of any Florida vacation, but don't miss out on all the inland adventures that await, too.

2. Or, Conversely, Not Spending Any Time at the Beach

If you plan a trip to Florida with no beach day on your itinerary, you’re doing it wrong. There’s a lot to love about the state beyond its sandy stretches, but that doesn’t mean you should leave the beach out of your vacation altogether. It is one of Florida’s main attractions, after all, and skipping it will leave your trip incomplete. Plus, with more than 600 miles of beaches in Florida , you’re guaranteed to find one that’s perfect for you.

3. Assuming It’s Always Warm and Sunny

Yes, Florida is called the Sunshine State, but the weather here isn’t always perfect. Winters can get chilly, especially in northern Florida, and in the summer months, you can expect a thunderstorm almost every afternoon like clockwork. It’s a fact of life during Florida summers, but it doesn’t have to dampen your plans — these squalls form, storm, and pass, usually departing as quickly and unexpectedly as they arrive. Just don’t forget to factor them in and be prepared to adjust your plans accordingly.

4. Forgetting to Wear Sunscreen

It’s not always sunny in Florida, but due to the state’s subtropical location, the sun’s rays are quite powerful, even on overcast and cloudy days. Getting a sunburn is a quick, painful, and entirely avoidable way to ruin your trip, so apply (and reapply) protection during your visit. Make sure to use reef-safe sunscreens , especially if you’re going to be at the beach. And while you’re at it, pack some bug spray, too — mosquitoes and other insects are another fact of life in Florida.

5. Assuming All Theme Parks Are in Orlando

This may blow a non-Floridian’s mind, but not all of Florida's theme parks are actually located in Orlando. The roller coaster-filled Busch Gardens Tampa Bay , for example, is situated in Tampa, while the Legoland Florida Resort can be found in Winter Haven.

It’s also worth noting that many “Orlando” theme parks are actually located in surrounding cities, like Kissimmee. Even the Walt Disney World Resort and its classic theme parks have addresses in Lake Buena Vista, not Orlando proper. Only the Universal Orlando Resort — home of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — as well as SeaWorld Orlando and its sister park Discovery Cove , are located within Orlando's city limits.

6. Or, Thinking Orlando Is Only Good for Theme Parks

Orlando is best known for its plethora of theme parks and attractions, but there’s a lot more to the city than park-hopping. You can book airboat rides, comedy shows, or bike tours; learn about the environment at Gatorland ; or meet artisanal vendors at East End Market . Ride The Wheel at ICON Park for a new perspective on the destination, or venture out to nearby cities like Winter Park or Winter Garden for a break from the touristy commotion.

7. Missing Out on Florida’s Wilderness

Florida’s beaches and theme parks are spectacular, but its natural environment is unlike anything else on Earth. Adventurous travelers who crave wild flora and fauna should check out Silver Springs State Park , birthplace of the glass-bottom boat tour; tube down the river in Rainbow Springs State Park ; dive or snorkel in Devil’s Den , a prehistoric spring; take a clear kayak tour on Crystal River and paddle alongside manatees; enjoy boating in the Florida Keys; or hike at Rock Springs Run State Reserve . Get off the beaten path in Florida, and you’ll reap rich rewards.

8. Interfering With Wildlife

Florida’s alligators are cool — when they are left undisturbed in their natural habitats. Don’t interfere with Florida’s wildlife in any way, as even seemingly innocent activities like feeding seagulls at the beach can drastically impact the state’s delicate ecosystem. Instead, opt for educational activities that let you experience Florida’s wildlife in a conservational context. At Juno Beach’s Loggerhead Marinelife Center , for example, you can book a nighttime beach walk to watch sea turtles come ashore and lay their eggs, all while learning about why the animals are so vital to the planet at large and what you can do to save them.

9. Forgetting to Account for Hurricane Season

While hurricanes can have a devastating impact, they usually provide some time to prepare. Many Floridians are equipped with a hurricane kit, shutters, and an evacuation plan for worst-case scenarios. For most people, however, facing a hurricane isn’t on the vacation agenda. Don’t forget to take Florida’s hurricane season into account when planning a trip. Hurricane season stretches from June through November, though peak season typically occurs from mid-August to late October. There’s no guarantee a hurricane will form, but don’t be blindsided if one does pop up on the radar.

10. Skipping the Florida Keys

Need a tropical island getaway but don’t want to leave the country? Head to the Florida Keys . The archipelago stretches about 120 miles off the state’s southern tip from Key Largo all the way to Key West, home of the southernmost point of the continental United States. Each of the Keys is breathtakingly beautiful, offering some of the best of Florida in one laid-back, scenic package.

11. Not Asking If the Fish Is Fresh

Florida has plenty of culinary highlights, and fresh fish tops the list — grouper and mahi-mahi are the real crowd pleasers if you’re new to seafood. Just don’t assume that every time you see fish on a menu in Florida, it’s locally sourced and fresh. If it’s not the catch of the day or confirmed to be sourced from the nearby Gulf or the Atlantic Ocean, don’t order it. It’s an unspoken rule in Florida: You’re asking for disappointment if you eat anything other than fresh, locally caught fish.

While we’re on the topic, fresh-squeezed local citrus is another non-negotiable. Florida orange juice is exported around the world for a reason — it’s like liquid sunshine. Oh, and denying yourself a thick slice of Florida Key lime pie during your visit would be a sin.

12. Not Slowing Down for Sunset

There’s nothing like golden hour in Florida, but sunset itself might just beat it. Locals across the state love to quote famous Floridian Jimmy Buffett when it comes to quitting time (or longing for it): “It’s 5 o’clock somewhere.” Do as the locals do: At the end of the day, slow down and enjoy one of life’s greatest pleasures. Five o’clock is Florida’s unofficial time to kick back with a cold one and await the splendor of a setting sun, so make sure you leave room in your itinerary to soak in this simple yet exquisite Florida treasure.

The state of Florida is diverse in its gifts, with everything from theme parks and Latin and Caribbean culture to wildlife, wetlands, and, of course, multitudes of beaches.

Renting a Car for a Road Trip in Florida

To be honest, if you are looking for a low-rate rental car in Florida with good performance and quality, Orlando, Florida airport car rental is rated above all.

When you look for a rental car for traveling purposes, count the members who will travel in it. Next, you should focus on the quantity of luggage the car has to carry. Luggage and the number of travelers are the main characteristics of every car, so it’s essential to choose your car according to them.

Remember to compare the vehicles of different rentals in Orlando. Do you know the rates per day of rental cars change according to seasons here? During peak seasons, rates go high, while rent is low on other days, such as $10 per day.

Difference between South Florida and North Florida

North Florida and South Florida to some can seem like two different states. In the southern side of Florida, one finds a Latin American and Caribbean influence. South Florida is also more popular for its nightlife.

On the other hand, North Florida is home to the state’s capital and has a different climate from South Florida. Moreover, North Florida is not so vulnerable to climate change when compared to South Florida which is susceptible to climate change-related events as well as rising sea levels.

Naples in Florida - travel tips

Naples in Florida – travel tips

Florida is not just about Disney World at Orlando, but there is a lot more to it. It is surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean.

With more than 4500 islands, and a massive coastline, Florida boasts many kinds of beaches. As a result, one can enjoy swimming, boating, snorkeling, surfing, fishing, and scuba. When in Florida, do not miss the chance to explore the hidden treasures of marine life.

Apart from the beaches, Florida boasts swamps, jungles, forests, and estuaries. Tourists and travelers explore the outdoors and look for iguanas, gators, and pythons. In fact, there is a lot more wildlife, and one often hears about snakes under porches or about egrets and manatees.

Florida is an incredible destination for outdoor enthusiasts as it is made of diverse ecosystems. There are plenty of outdoor options in Florida as you can go padding in mangroves or hike in the Everglades National Park . An increasing number of tourists are discovering the ultimate outdoor recreation destination in Florida because of the myriad of landscapes that comprise saltwater marshlands, bald-cypress swamps, and untouched pinewoods.

Places to stay in Florida

When it comes to looking for accommodations in the Sunshine State, well, you are sure to remain spoiled for choice. You can opt for luxurious resorts, and boutique hotels and these hotels sure know how to do the luxury right.

Florida also offers plenty of rustic places to stay where you can enjoy reconnecting with nature. Stay in one of the many duplex cabins in the middle of the biodiverse places and enjoy the nature around. Nothing could be better than staying at one of the Waterfront Hotels in Florida and enjoying panoramic ocean and gulf views.

It is a must to explore those waterfront hotel beauties when holidaying in Florida. Check out Florida villas holidays for a wide range of accommodation options for your budget and preferences.

Florida Food Guide – What to Eat

Florida’s food has been influenced by many other cultures. You can find a unique and vast range of things to eat in Florida with flavors that are influenced by the Cuban, Caribbean, early Spanish, and African cultures.

You will find the freshest seafood and tropical fruit wherever you go. Some of the most famous as well as the tastiest foods here include Cuban sandwiches, conch fritters, Florida stone crab, strawberry shortcake, Apalachicola oysters, alligator meat, and craft beer.

An all-time Florida favorite is the key lime pie. Be sure to try boiled peanuts from roadside shops.

If you’re visiting in February and March, you can find freshly plucked strawberries at a good price that you’d love to take home. Throughout the year, many places also offer free samples of orange juices because of citrus farming.

Swimming Safely – Sharks, Snakes, and Alligators

An alligator in Florida - travel tips for visiting

An alligator in Florida – travel tips for visiting

When in Florida, think twice before jumping into random lakes or rivers for a swim. Or better, only get inside the water if you see a sign indicating that it is safe to swim.

Florida has its share of freshwater alligators and poisonous snakes. There have been a few cases of alligators attacking humans and the Miami Herald has an article about what to do in such a situation. They can be found in marshy waters, especially after dark. It is best not to take the risk of disturbing them.

Florida’s Volusia County has had a few rare cases of shark attacks. Swim only in areas that are tended by lifeguards. Also, avoid being in the water alone or when it is dark.

Bonus: Don’t leave your child or pet in a parked car

Road-tripping in Florida? Don’t leave your child or a pet in a parked car for even five minutes. Even if the windows are open, the inside of a parked car can get heated up very quickly and can be fatal. Moreover, doing so is a punishable crime.

Florida, also known as the sunshine state, is an amazing state to visit! From Walt Disney World and Universal Studios to the beaches and nightlife there are so many things to do in Florida. In this guide, you will find everything you need to know about planning your trip, what to pack, and even some Florida travel tips.

I love Florida so much. I think there was a span of time that I went to Florida twice a year at least, for about 5 years. Florida was one of my first vacations I went on as a teenager, for my senior trip, without my parents so it was one of the first trips that I felt like I had some freedom to do all the things that I wanted to do.

Florida has so much to offer for everyone. Here are some great Florida travel tips that will make you want to book your trip ASAP.

Tips for Planning a Trip to Florida

Best time to go to florida.

Florida is an awesome state to visit any time of the year! There are so many attractions for travelers year-round. You can visit miles of coastline beaches, Walt Disney World, The Kennedy Space Center, and even the southernmost point in the Continental US. These are just a few of the many activities you can enjoy in the wonderful state of Florida.

The fall and spring is typically the best time to travel to Florida. During this time the weather can be milder than the scorching summer heat and the crowds thinner because school is in session and the unpredictable weather keeps some people away.

The winter season can also be a popular time to travel to the southern part of Florida. With the mild weather staying warm year round it’s the ideal place to escape the winter cold and relax on the beach in the sun. Florida is even a popular winter destination for the retired, a group of people called Snowbirds!

The weather in Florida can be a bit dramatic. Summer in Florida can be brutal with the heat and the humidity, temperatures all over the state rising well up into the 90s from early spring to later in the fall. In addition to that high heat and humidity, there is also a potential for hurricanes making landfall. Be sure to keep an eye out for any big storms forming in the oceans and be aware of where they are tracking to hit. Hurricane season runs from June-November (for 2021).

No matter what time of the year you pick to travel to Florida, there will be something fun to keep you entertained.

Estimated Budget

Depending on what kind of trip you are planning, Florida can be enjoyed on almost any budget. Budgeting will end up depending a lot on the time of year you plan on traveling and the area of Florida you want to travel to. But if you plan ahead you can keep everything in your budget! Below are the average costs as of 2021, be aware that prices will change over time, but these will give you an idea of expenses while traveling to Florida.

Accommodations

Hotels range anywhere from a cheaper $50 a night all the way up to $330 per night. The average ends up being around $110 per night for a hotel in Florida.

The prices will depend on when and where you stay. During Spring Break in Miami, some of the hotels can be as expensive as $1.200 per night for the higher-end hotels and $200 per night for the mid-range hotels.

Food prices, just like hotels, can range depending on where you decide to eat. Florida offers a great range of price points for any kind of budget. From small cafes and bakeries, food trucks, or fancy high-end restaurants, there’s something for everyone. On average eating out in Florida typically costs around $18 per person.

Transportation

While it depends on which city you are traveling to, Florida does offer some public transportation to help you with getting around.

Bus or Trolley: Many of the larger cities have a bus or trolley service that you can use. Looking up the individual city’s route maps will help you plan to get around easier.

Shuttle Services: A shuttle service is offered by Florida Shuttle Transportation to travel from major city to city.

Car Rental: Always an option if you like being more on your own time and schedule. There are multiple options for renting cars while visiting Florida and prices normally average out to $74 a day. There are cheaper options depending on when you book your rental car, how long you have it for, and what style of car you pick.

Note: If you are renting a car make sure you take the cost of gas into account when budgeting.

What to Pack for Florida

The temperatures in Florida typically stay pretty warm through the year, dropping down a little bit during the short winter. With a long summer, lasting from May to October, the weather is both humid and warm. The short summers tend to be dry and the colder temperatures only last from December to February.

These are some of the best items to bring with you to Florida no matter what time of the year you are traveling!

  • Sunscreen – Protecting yourself against the strong sun is important year-round. Don’t forget that Florida is known as the Sunshine State!  Many people don’t think about sunscreen when they aren’t going to the beach, but the sun can cause burns no matter where you are. Sunscreen with a least 30 SPF should be used and reapplied throughout the day to keep you safe.

Note: If you plan on snorkeling or diving there are some sunscreens that are Reef Safe. This means that they are safe and wont harm the coral reefs in the ocean.

  •  Sunglasses – The sun in the Sunshine State is bright! Polarized sunglasses are highly recommended, especially if you’re going to be out on the water. That reflection off the water can be a killer for your eyes if left unprotected.
  • Sun Hat – Protecting your head and face from the sun is also important! While we were in Florida in June of 2019 all three of us ended up with sunburned scalp. Take it from me, it’s extremely painful and not something you want to deal with.
  • Swimsuit – A swimsuit is a must for traveling to Florida. When you are soaking up the rays on the beach or poolside wearing a swimsuit is the way to go. There are even multiple waterparks in Florida to enjoy while rocking your favorite suit.
  • Reusable Water Bottle – The heat and humidity in Florida are no joke. It’s always important to stay well hydrated, but especially so if you are spending more time than usual in the high heat. Purchasing single-use water bottles can add up in price and is more harmful to the environment, so bringing along your own reusable one is a great way to save money and stay hydrated.

Where to Stay in Florida

Booking your accommodations in advance will help you save money, especially if you are traveling during peak season. When we have been to Florida we’ve stayed at a few different hotels! These are some of our favorites:

Kissimmee, Florida – Vacation Village at Parkway (our favorite place to stay). This is centrally located between the Amusement Parks and is a great place to stay.

Florida City, Florida – Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott

Airbnb is also a very popular way to stay. There are some amazing options and can even help you save some money if you have a kitchen and can cook some of your meals there!

Best of Florida -Travel Tips

Top cities to visit in florida.

Probably one of the first cities that will pop into your head when you think about Florida. Orlando is filled with exciting entertainment to fill your entire trip with fun. This is one of the places we’ve visited multiple times over the years and continue to want to go back to. Orlando is home to the famous Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, and the Kennedy Space Station. From amusement parks, museums, shopping, and great nightlife there are plenty of attractions to keep anyone in the family happy and entertained. Here are things to do in Orlando that aren’t theme parks.

Miami, located at the southern tip of Florida, is known for its gorgeous beaches and amazing nightlife scene. Miami is actually known as the “Magic City” because of the unique mix of beach vibes and urban culture. In addition to the beaches and nightlife, Miami also offers the Biscayne National Park for nature lovers, the Bayside Marketplace for some shopping, and the Art Deco Historic District. There is always something fun to do there.

Key West, known for being the southernmost point in the continental United States, features beaches, more nightlife, historic areas, and delicious foods. Enjoy a slice of Key Lime pie while watching their famous gorgeous sunsets during happy hour, snorkel along the reefs to see a collection of incredible marine life, or just soak up the sun on one of the many beaches. There is also a giant anchored concrete buoy that marks the southernmost point and makes for a great photo opportunity.

Located on the western coast of Florida, Sarasota is a great place to visit. Some of the main attractions for this city include pristine golf courses, historic landmarks, stunning gardens, and of course the beautiful beaches. It is known for being a great place to travel with the family while still being easier on a budget.

Tampa, located on the west coast of Florida is a major city and has tons of great attractions for the whole family. Busch Gardens is one of those main attractions and filled with exotic animals, safari rides, roller coasters, and water rides. Tampa is also home to a zoo with more than 2,000 animals, the Florida Aquarium, and the Glazer Children’s Museum. Adventure Island, located just across the street from Busch Gardens, is one of Tampa’s most popular attractions.

St. Augustine

Known for being the Nation’s Oldest City, St. Augustine is located on the northeastern coast of Florida. In addition to its gorgeous beaches and delicious dining, the historical landmarks make St. Augustine a great place to dive into history. In addition to multiple museums and beaches, St. Augustine also has a wild reserve, an alligator zoological park, wineries.

Best Things to do in Florida

Soak up the sun.

Florida has a lot of beaches, 825 miles of beaches to be specific. That is an insane amount of beachfront. There are so many options on which beach to visit, but there are a few that edge out the others in popularity. Clearwater Beach, located along the Gulf Coast, offers miles of white sand and clear waters perfect for a relaxing day. Key West is another popular city to travel to for some good beach fun. Bringing a happy dog along? Jupiter Beach is an off-leash dog beach located in Palm Beach County.

Hang out by the pool

Enjoy an Awesome Amusement Park

Florida is well known for being the home of Walt Disney World, but there are a ton of other amusements to visit there too. Universal Studios, Seaworld, and Gatorland are all located in Orlando with Walt Disney World. Tampa has Busch Gardens and also Adventure Island, a waterpark.. For all the Lego enthusiasts, Winter Haven is home to LEGOLAND. There are so many different options on amazing amusement parks to visit while in Florida.

Rock the Nightlife

Florida has hundreds of bars and clubs to enjoy after you’ve spent the day soaking up the sun or enjoying an amusement park. Key West has gorgeous sunset happy hour sailings, live music performances, and even drag performances. Miami also has an amazing nightlife with rooftop bars, dance clubs, and dive bars. It’s safe to say the fun doesn’t stop when the sun goes down in Florida.

Appreciate the Arts

Florida has a large array of different art museums. The Salvador Dali Museum is located in St. Petersburg and displays over 2,000 pieces of art by the Spanish painter. There is even a self-guided scavenger hunt to help get the kids involved in the visit to the museum! Downtown Miami houses the Perez Art Museum and features modern and contemporary arts. This museum also includes some hands-on activities as well as hanging gardens and waterfront views to enjoy.

Take in the History

If learning the history of the places you visit is one of your interests, Florida has some great museums dedicated to their history. The most popular one is the Museum of Florida History and is located in Tallahassee. This museum features items from Spanish shipwrecks, a mastodon skeleton that’s 12,000 years old, and more. If pirate history is more your style the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum dives into the lives of real-life pirates and how they lived. They have a huge collection of authentic pirate artifacts too.

Hike in Nature

Florida boasts three national parks and multiple other state and local parks for any nature lover. The Everglades National Park is located near Miami and is over 1.5 million acres in size. There are a few different ways to enjoy the park, including the waterway trail and gator tours. Dry Tortugas National Park is also located in the southern part of Florida off the coast. With all of the amazing marine life there, it’s a great place for fishing, snorkeling, paddleboarding, and diving.

What to Eat in Florida

Key lime pie .

Key lime pie is one of the more famous food items to come out of Florida. Key West is the best place in Florida to enjoy this delicious creation. It’s a perfect combination of sweet with a little tang to it from the key limes. If you are in Key West stop at Blue Heaven  for Happy Hour drinks and a piece of their delicious key lime pie.

Growers in Florida produce a few different types of citrus fruits, but oranges have jumped out as one of their most well known. The climate in Florida is ideal for growing the oranges as the high humidity and heat are perfect conditions for the orange trees.

Gator Tail

One Florida speciality is gator tail. While Florida has a large alligator population, the gators served in restaurants are farm raised. The gator tail can be served in multiple different ways from deep-fried bite-sized nuggets to more refined soups, or even a slab of alligator ribs covered in BBQ sauce. No matter how the gator tail is served, it will be a delicious experience.

Conch Fritters

While these are originally from the south of Florida in the Bahamas, conch fritters have become a very popular Floridian dish. These fritters are typically a mixture of conch meat and peppery seasonings for a blast of flavor. Key West has a ton of different restaurant options for enjoying some of these fritters.

Florida Travel Tips for International Travelers

The official language in the United States is English, however, there are influences of other languages depending on where you are traveling in the country.

Florida’s main language is English. Some parts of Florida have a large population of people from Spanish-speaking regions, so it’s not uncommon for Spanish to be spoken as well. In Miami specifically, about 60% of the population actually speaks Spanish!

If you are ever traveling to a country where you are not familiar with the main language, you can download the language on the Google Translate app beforehand! If you download the language you want before your trip, then you can use it even if you are offline, which is extremely helpful.

Passport/Visa

If you are a US citizen you can travel amongst the United States without restriction.

For non-US citizens, a great place for information on traveling to the United States is the website for the Bureau of Consular Affairs. There is a section on this website where you can look up information about visitor visas, the visa waiver program, and more!

According to their website, if a foreign national would like to travel to the United States for tourism purposes a visitor visa (B-2) is required unless they qualify for the Visa Waiver Program. Information on how to apply, the required documentation, and any associated fees can be found. Be sure to check it out to see what the requirements for a visit are!

( https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/tourism-visit.html this is the website I looked on for this info)

United States Dollar (USD, $)

If you are visiting from another country keep in mind the exchange rate is constantly fluctuating but can be checked with a quick Google search.

Credit Cards and ATMs

Most businesses throughout the United States take credit cards, especially in the main tourist cities. You will still have to make sure you have cash on hand though. If you are in a smaller town or if you take public transportation you will need cash.

If you plan on renting a car you will need a credit card that matches the name of the person renting the car. Make sure to let your bank or credit card company know that you will be traveling to ensure they don’t flag your transactions as suspicious and freeze your account.

We normally take out some of the currency we will need before traveling and then use our Capital One Venture card when we can. It has no transaction fees and makes our lives much easier.

The United States power outlets are 120V and either a two-prong or three-prong socket. We have this universal adapter with a surge protector to make sure we are always prepared when traveling.

Like most of the United States, safety in Florida really depends a lot on location. There are certain cities and areas of cities known for being more dangerous when traveling than others.

The best thing to do is look up the area you are traveling to in order to learn more about their specific safety risks. For example, Key West has a relatively low crime rate but using common sense when exploring and keeping belongings secure are good ideas. However, Orlando is known for being less safe. There are specific neighborhoods known for having higher violence and property crime, so it’s extremely important to learn more about the area you are traveling to before going.

One of the best things you can do before any trip is to get travel insurance. Having travel insurance can protect you against cancellations, theft, and even injury. We don’t travel anywhere without having insurance. Our favorite travel insurance is provided by World Nomads. Check out our post on Travel Insurance here .

Public transportation in Florida is very city-dependent. Depending on the city, there are buses and trolleys, bike-sharing programs, and shuttle services. Google Transit is also helpful for mapping out a route for traveling.

Some cities even have free services for the public to use. In Key West, there is a free bus route that runs from along Key West’s famous main street. This Duval Loop has 18 stops and is a great way to explore some of Key West. Orlando, on the other hand, has the I-Ride Trolley Service with multiple routes around the city. This service is an affordable form of transportation, with the ability to purchase just a single ride or an unlimited ride pass for up to 14-days!

I would suggest renting a car if you plan on visiting multiple cities or attractions while on your trip. Each time we’ve been to Florida we’ve had a vehicle to get us around and it helps so much. While public transportation can be nice, it also does take a lot of time and sometimes money depending on where you are going and what the schedule is for the service. Having the flexibility of starting the day and moving onto the next activity at any time is great freedom when renting a car. But, also keep in mind that you may have to pay for parking at some of the destinations as well.

Table of Contents

Areas of Florida

Before you start planning a vacation to Florida, you may need to know where to go in Florida. Florida is a big state, covering 2 time zones, hundreds of miles of interstate, and dozens of islands.

Florida Panhandle

The northern Florid area, known as the panhandle because of how it connects to the mainland, consists of popular towns such as Pensacola, Panama city Beach, and Tallahassee. I-10 is your go-to interstate here.

This area is great for Spring break, with sandy beaches and generally a similar southern atmosphere that y ou mind find in Alabama and Georgia.

North Florida

Jacksonville and St. Augustine are both important historical cities but have a lot of fun things to do. These are some of my favorite Florida vacation ideas.

Central Florida

Your theme park capital is Central Florida, home to the Disney Parks, but also Busch Gardens in Tampa Bay, Daytona Beach, and Cocoa Beach areas. This is certainly the area for family fun and often the first place people think of when seeking out a trip to Florida.

South Florida

As you head south in Florida, you’re getting into more tropical weather and attitudes. Changes in latitude bring Miami Beach, the Florida Keys, even more beautiful beaches and culture.

Fort Myers on the Gulf Coast to Fort Lauderdale on the Atlantic span great wildlife wonders such as those you can find in Everglades National Park.

Best Sites for Florida Trip Planning

There are a number of my go to sites for planning a trip to Florida. Even though I’ve lived here a while, I haven’t been everywhere and these sites give me both Florida trip ideas, and even some Florida Travel Tips I may not know myself.

Visit Florida

Visit Florida – My number one favorite website for all things Florida. This is the best way to get started with how to plan a Florida vacation.

The Visit Florida website is a great place to start your family vacation planning. From beaches like Fort Lauderdale, cities, things to do and deals, it’s an all in one-stop-shop for your Florida vacation.

Visit Florida also has its own hashtag you can use for research , #LoveFL. Just watch the amazing feed of Instagram photos at the bottom of their site.

Theme Parks

Of course, the number one reason families plan a Florida vacation is the theme parks. Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, and SeaWorld all in one location.

Walt Disney World – The main site, of course, has all the information you’ll ever need.

WDW Radio – The WDW Radio show is one of my favorite podcasts to listen to. I recommend subscribing to get your Disney fix, as well as searching the 10-year archive to find information specific to what you want to know.

WDW Info – This unbiased information site lists articles, news, discounts, and how-tos. It is a comprehensive site. Check out the forums for other travelers’ experiences, questions, and trip reports.

My Disney Experience App – The up to date official app in the parks. Download and review maps, park hours, wait times, and more. Use this app even if you’ve booked with a travel agent above.

Touring Plans  –  This neat website is a paid service, but well worth the $15 you’ll spend. Get custom touring plans that tell you how to attack the parks, what to see when, how to navigate, and more. They use an extensive time-tested tracking process that tells you when the best wait times are. It is also downloadable as an app. Use their recommended plans, or create a custom one of your must-see rides and attractions.

Undercover Tourist – This site is both a Florida vacation planner and ticket seller all in one. They are an official ticket seller, but also offer first-time tips and travel planning.  **Bonus** – check out their Crowd Calendar  to plan the best times to visit.

Universal Orlando

Universal Orlando website – The main site will also give you information on events, showtimes,  and on-site hotels.

Undercover Tourist – While all-inclusive about all the theme parks in the area, Undercover Tourist excels at Universal related information. **Bonus** – check out their Crowd Calendar to plan the best times to visit. (see above for Disney too!)

Sea World Website – Sea World Orlando has 3 theme parks, the main Sea World, Discovery Cove where you can swim with dolphins, and their water park, Aquatica.

Ticket Sales

If you’re ready to buy for any of the theme parks for your Florida vacation and want to do it on your own, Viator offers discounts on ticket packages, shows, and attractions. Some of their current best offers:

plan a vacation to florida 1 I've lived in Florida for over 20 years and also co-host the Florida Travel Podcast. And I still use a lot of these sites to plan a vacation to Florida parts of the state I haven't visited.

  • SeaWorld – Pay for a Day, get the Year for free
  • Orlando Flex Pass – 20+ attractions starting at $65 .

Additional Florida Travel Ideas

Florida is of course so much more than the theme parks. With its incredible beaches, vibrant nightlife and world-class cuisine, it is a destination that appeals to all ages. There are plenty of outdoor activities to explore too – from deep sea fishing and snorkelling to kayaking and bird watching. Plus, there’s always the option of a laid back beach day just soaking up the sun or enjoying an ice cream

Kennedy Space Center

The Kennedy Space Center, located in Florida, is a premiere destination for space exploration enthusiasts. It was originally developed as a launch facility in the late 1950s and was the starting point of numerous historic launches throughout the 60s and 70s. It has since become a popular tourist attraction where visitors can explore the history of US space exploration. Visitors to the Kennedy Space Center have many options for experiencing its unique history.

Guests can explore the Apollo/Saturn V Center, where they can view both an authentic Saturn V moon rocket and Apollo spacecraft.

The Shuttle Launch Experience allows visitors to experience what it’s like to launch into space aboard one of NASA’s iconic shuttles, while IMAX movies provide an up close look at some of humanity’s greatest space endeavors.

For visitors who want to delve even deeper into the science behind space exploration, there are several interactive exhibits that teach about various aspects of astronaut training and life in zero gravity environments. No trip to Kennedy Space Center would be complete without a stop at Space Shuttle Atlantis! This interactive exhibit takes guests on a journey through more than 30 years of American manned space flight.

Book your Kennedy Space Center Experience here

Florida has some of the best beaches in America. In fact, Siesta Key is frequently rated #1 by Dr. Beach . Or you might choose things to do in Anna Maria Island , another popular destination in Florida.

Other popular beaches in Florida include:

  • West Palm Beach
  • For Myers Beach
  • Panama City Beach
  • South Beach

All of these are in different regions of Florida.

I can’t even begin to tell you how many beaches there are in Florida. From the Panhandle to the Keys back up to Jacksonville, NOAA rates Florida with 8,436 miles of coastline. That’s over 13,000 KM for you metric folks!

My favorite way to find a beach is by using Visit Florida’s Beach Finder . Use the sliders to choose between Adventurous or Laid back, Family Friendly or Romantic, Action-Packed or Secluded and Manicured or Au Naturel.

If you’re looking for a specific area, select the  Choose Region in the upper right-hand corner to further narrow your results. When you hover over each beach photo, it gives you a percentage match for your designations.

Everglades National Park

The Everglades National Park in Florida is a must-see for any visitor to the Sunshine State.

This unique wetland ecosystem provides a stunning array of wildlife, from alligators to rare birds, and even the occasional panther. You can explore its vast wilderness via boat or take a stroll along its boardwalks.

But Everglades isn’t the only national park in Florida; there are also the Biscayne National Park near Miami, Dry Tortugas National Park in the Gulf of Mexico, and Canaveral National Seashore on the Space Coast.

All offer breathtaking adventures for travelers looking to soak up some sun and explore nature’s beauty. So if you’re looking for a fun and exciting day trip while vacationing in Florida, check out one of these amazing national parks!

Book a Florida Everglades Guided boating and walking tour here

Florida Keys and Key West

The Florida Keys, paradise islands extending from the tip of mainland Florida, is a great spot to explore for any traveler. The Keys stretch over 100 miles in length, from Key Largo to Key West. If you’re coming from Miami, you can reach Key West within 3 hours via car. Key West is known as the southernmost point of the continental United States and is home to picturesque sunsets, unique architecture, and a vibrant nightlife. You can explore historical sites such as Ernest Hemingway’s home or take part in fantastic outdoor activities like snorkeling with turtles or fishing with local guides. Plus, don’t forget about all the excellent restaurants and bars that make Key West one of Florida’s most popular destinations!

Read more things to do in Key West here.

Florida Springs

Florida’s springs are some of the most beautiful natural wonders in the state. With the crystal clear blue waters, they make for a perfect place to cool down and relax. The average temperature of Florida’s springs is around 72°F (22°C). One of the most popular springs in Florida is Rainbow Springs near Dunnellon , where visitors can snorkel or swim in its warm water and explore the luscious vegetation that surrounds it.

Another popular spot is Ichetucknee Springs State Park near Fort White, where visitors can take a leisurely tube ride down its stunningly clear waterways.

Silver Springs State Park in the Ocala area is another popular springs with glass bottom boats. It is the home to a large variety of wildlife, including fish, birds and turtles. The park offers a range of outdoor activities such as canoeing, kayaking, and swimming in the springs. Boaters may also enjoy a peaceful ride on the Silver River from Silver Springs State Park to an area known as “The End” located at the end of the river

There are many other natural springs scattered throughout the state as well, perfect for an afternoon dip on a hot summer day.

Plan a Vacation to Florida for History

If you crave a little history when planning a Florida vacation, look no further than the Nation’s Oldest City, St. Augustine . The Old City website gives you a complete breakdown of what to see and do, as well as the historic sites to see.

St. Augustine isn’t the only historic place in Florida, however .

Two of my favorite resources are books rather than websites. The Historical Traveler’s Guide to Florida, available on Amazon & Kindle   provides historical sites by area, with details, hours and websites. If you’re looking specifically to visit an era, the appendix has that guide too.

Time Traveler’s Guide to Florida, also on Amazon , is a great resource for over 140 historical style events in Florida. Think reenactments and fairs, the book is organized by time period, as well as a calendar of events in the appendix. If you’re visiting St. Augustine, this is a great companion book as I’ve found there seems to be an event nearly every weekend.

Hotels – Where to Stay in Florida

When you vacation in Florida, you need a place to stay. Choosing a hotel room can be just as daunting as figuring out where to go in Florida. You can stay in a name brand hotel, or decide if you want something more unique in a hotel room. Click on How to Choose a Unique Hotel for more info .

Booking.com is my go to resource for booking hotels as one of the most trusted booking sites around.

When it comes to choosing a hotel in Florida, you’ll want to consider the location and amenities of the hotel.

You’ll want to check for reviews online from past guests to ensure your stay is as pleasant as possible.

Once you have settled on a hotel, make sure you explore different parts of the state. From the natural beauty of its many beaches and parks to its vibrant city life, there are plenty of attractions for visitors. Enjoy all that Florida has to offer and don’t forget your sunscreen! You’ll also want to be aware of any local advisories if visiting during hurricane season so that you can plan accordingly.

Home and Florida Vacation Rentals

If you’re looking to go the home rental route for your Florida Vacation, there are several sites to use. Home rentals can be great for large, multi-family use, or simply for a closer more authentic type of family vacation.

A few links to use:

  • VRBO – Vacation Rental by Owner
  • Top Villas Vacation Rentals

Check out some of my favorite Top Villas Vacation Rentals here .

Renting a car in Florida?

Renting a car while visiting Florida is an easy way to get around and explore all the Sunshine State has to offer.

With so many rental car agencies in Florida , it’s easy to find one that fits your needs. Depending on where you’re traveling from, there may be different rates and special offers available.

Plus, many rental car companies have convenient locations at airports and other travel hubs. Next time you’re planning a trip to Florida, consider renting a car and seeing what adventure awaits!

Read more on what you need to know for renting a car in Florida.

Food & Visitors’ Bureau

Finally, the last site to use once you’ve narrowed down an area (unless you’re just hitting the theme parks) it’s time to figure out where to eat. For this, I turn to the Convention and Visitors’ Bureaus , also known as CVBs. These little-known sites are as great as the Visit Florida site, just pared down to the city.

To find them, search  City Name + CVB.

For example, Miami’s official site is Miami and Beaches . Jacksonville is Visit Jacksonville .

What does this have to do with food? These sites not only list the different types of restaurants in the area, they often group them by type. Some, such as Visit St Pete Clearwater , will blog about different styles of food such as where to get the best grouper or beer.

Final Thoughts: Florida Trip Planner

From where to go, what to do, where to stay, and what to eat, this should be everything you need for planning a Florida trip vacation. Whether you’re looking for a beachside getaway or an exciting city adventure, Florida has something to offer everyone.

When it comes to planning your Florida vacation, the best advice is to do your research and start the planning process early. With enough preparation and organization, you’ll be ready for a vacation you won’t soon forget! Just remember to keep an open mind, leave yourself some flexibility in the plans you make, and most of all have fun!

What sites are your favorites to use? Any that I missed? Please comment and let me know.

Tips for planning a trip to Florida

Planning a trip to Florida? We share these travel tips for Florida, so you can plan the perfect trip and save some money at the same time.

When it comes to the most popular places to holiday in the United States, Florida often tops the list. Its attractions, natural beauty, coastlines, and favorable weather make it an easy choice when picking a holiday destination. And it’s for these reasons that planning a trip to Florida can be overwhelming as there is so much to see and do. What’s the best way to spend your time? Here are four tips that will help you to plan the ultimate vacation to Florida and ensure everything goes smoothly.

Where to go in Florida

Your planning should begin by narrowing down the area of Florida that you want to visit. The state is quite large, so it’s best to pick a specific region that you will be touring or staying in. But which region is best?

There is no simple answer as it comes down to what you want to do on your vacation. If you’re all about the beaches and the sun, then you’ll want to pick a city/town that is on the beach;  adults can enjoy the nude beaches in Florida  whilst South Beach is a popular option for many visitors to the state.

If you like the idea of amusement parks and recreational activities, you probably don’t need to be beachfront but stick to Orlando for the best parks in the state. You can also enjoy the family-friendly attractions on International Drive too.

You can find natural beauty all over the state as well as fantastic food, friendly locals, and those iconic Florida lighthouses .

Some of the most popular areas of Florida to vacation in are:

  • Fort Lauderdale
  • Panama City Beach
  • St. Petersburg
  • St. Augustine
  • Daytona Beach

Florida with kids

If you are traveling with kids in Florida , it can be the perfect destination. Known for its massive list of activities and attractions, it’s enough to keep the whole family busy for the duration of the trip. A good idea is to prioritize the list of activities so that you don’t over-extend yourself. If you find you’ve got extra time, you can always pack a few more attractions in.

There are a few attractions that consistently get great reviews from families such as Walt Disney World (Orlando), Kennedy Space Center (Titusville), Universal Studios (Orlando), St. Augustine Alligator Farm (St. Augustine), LEGOLAND (Orlando), Gatorland (Orlando) and Busch Gardens (Tampa). Plan a luxury Florida vacation

Instead of settling for the standard style of vacation, why not elevate your experience? Luxury vacation ideas in Florida are plentiful.

From booking a luxury vacation rental to hitting up the finest local restaurants, and visiting beautiful beaches and attractions, this style of vacation is perfect for couples who want to be treated to luxury while on vacation and want to step outside the hustle and bustle of their daily lives.

Families can also enjoy staying in studio apartments in Orlando , ideal if you are looking for more space during your trip. Miami and Key West are great locations for couples whilst a cruise from Florida is the ideal way to relax and unwind in the sunshine.

Every single experienced traveler will tell you that it is vital to plan ahead. The same goes for Florida. And the earlier you do it, the better. You can take into account several factors as you plan but the really important thing is research.

Make sure to take into account the schedule of everyone. This can be difficult when traveling with a large family, especially when several adults need to take time from work, or when there are children of different ages going on the trip.

Remember that the best accommodation will book really fast. Also, reservations will be a lot cheaper when they are booked early.

As an extra tip, when you travel by road, make sure to carefully plan the route you will take, including stop spots. And do make backup plans since you never know how traffic goes.

When to visit Florida

The peak tourist season is from mid-April until November. The summer months are often busy, but keep in mind it gets very hot and humid during this time. The heat and humidity can make it uncomfortable if you plan on doing a lot of outdoor activities that don’t include swimming.

As expected, Florida is a very popular destination for the holidays and for Spring Break. There are several attractions available there during these times but the prices are also very high. If you want to travel on a budget, such timeframes should be avoided.

The best time to visit Florida is during Fall or Winter. This is because the weather is truly great, even if hurricane season can still be a problem. Spring and Christmas are not great options since Florida will be filled with families, students, and more.

Free things to do in Florida

There are so many free options available when you want to experience what Florida has to offer. For instance, you can have a lovely picnic or you can visit the Science Museum without spending a penny.

You can enjoy vacations in Florida in so many different ways, even if you are on a budget. Usually, you want to create memories. These do not really need you to spend a lot of money. So many options can be considered, like the beaches, playgrounds, town squares, Disney Spring, and so on. And many are even better than the paid options.

Your last-minute guide to Monday's total solar eclipse

Photo Illustration: The phases of a total solar eclipse

A total solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday , offering millions a rare opportunity to see afternoon skies temporarily darken as the moon blocks the face of the sun.

Tune into NBC News NOW as Lester Holt hosts a two-hour special at 2 p.m. ET Monday from Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The eclipse's path fortuitously cuts across Mexico, 15 U.S. states and a small part of eastern Canada. In all other states in the continental U.S., viewers will be treated to a partial solar eclipse, with the moon appearing to take a bite out of the sun and obscuring part of its light.

Here’s everything you need to know about the rare celestial event.

What is a solar eclipse?

Solar eclipses occur when the sun, moon and Earth align. The moon passes between Earth and sun, temporarily blocking the sun’s light and casting a shadow on Earth.

A total solar eclipse is when the moon fully obscures the sun, whereas a partial solar eclipse means it blocks just a portion of the sun’s face.

Solar eclipses occur only with the new moon. Because the moon’s orbit around Earth is tilted, the three bodies don’t always line up in a way that creates an eclipse.

“Imagine if the moon’s orbit were in the plane of Earth’s orbit around the sun — if that were the case, then every new moon, you’d have a total solar eclipse and every full moon, you’d have a lunar eclipse,” Neil DeGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, told NBC News. “So, because things don’t always align, it lends to the rarity of the event and the specialness of the event.”

Where and when will the eclipse be visible?

This year’s eclipse will follow a slightly wider path over more populated areas of the continental U.S. than other total solar eclipses have in the recent past.

NASA estimates that 31.6 million people live within what’s known as the path of totality, where the total solar eclipse will be visible. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path, according to the agency.

The path travels through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Tiny parts of Michigan and Tennessee will also be able to witness totality if conditions are clear.

After the eclipse crosses into Canada, it will pass over southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton, at the eastern end of Nova Scotia.

Those outside the path of totality can still take part in the astronomical event by viewing a partial solar eclipse — visible throughout all 48 states of the contiguous U.S. — or a NASA livestream.

The timing, including how long totality lasts, depends on the location, but some spots will see the moon fully cover the sun for up to 4 minutes and 28 seconds.

Below is a list of timings for some cities along the path of totality, as  provided by NASA . A number of other resources, including NationalEclipse.com  and  TimeandDate.com , can also help people plan.

  • Dallas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:23 p.m. CT and totality at 1:40 p.m.
  • Little Rock, Arkansas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:33 p.m. CT and totality at 1:51 p.m.
  • Cleveland: Partial eclipse begins at 1:59 p.m. ET and totality at 3:13 p.m.
  • Buffalo, New York: Partial eclipse begins at 2:04 p.m. ET and totality at 3:18 p.m.
  • Lancaster, New Hampshire: Partial eclipse begins at 2:16 p.m. ET and totality at 3:27 p.m.

How to safely view a solar eclipse

It is never safe to gaze directly at the sun, even when it is partly or mostly covered by the moon. Special eclipse glasses or  pinhole projectors  are required to safely view solar eclipses and prevent eye damage. Failing to take the proper precautions can result in severe eye injury,  according to NASA .

Eclipse glasses are thousands of times darker than normal sunglasses and specially made to enable wearers to look at the sun during these kinds of celestial events.

Sky-watchers should also never view any part of the sun through binoculars, telescopes or camera lenses unless they have specific solar filters attached. Eclipse glasses should not be used with these devices, as they will not provide adequate protection.

However, during the few minutes of totality, when the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to look with the naked eye.

Image: Tyler Hanson

Beware of fake eclipse glasses. On legitimate pairs, the lenses should have a silver appearance on the front and be black on the inside. The manufacturer’s name and address should be clearly labeled, and they should not be torn or punctured. Check, as well, for the ISO logo and the code “IS 12312-2” printed on the inside.

If you don’t have eclipse glasses, you can make a homemade pinhole projector, which lets sunlight in through a small hole, focuses it and projects it onto a piece of paper, wall or other surface to create an image of the sun that is safe to look at.

All you need is two pieces of white cardboard or plain white paper, aluminum foil and a pin or thumbtack. Cut a 1- to 2-inch square or rectangle out of the center of a piece of white paper or cardboard. Tape aluminum foil over that cut-out shape, then use a pin or thumbtack to poke a tiny hole in the foil.

During the eclipse, place a second piece of white paper or cardboard on the ground as a screen and hold the projector with the foil facing up and your back to the sun. Adjusting how far you hold the projector from the second piece of paper will alter the size of the image on the makeshift screen.

What to look for while viewing the total solar eclipse

For people along the path of totality, there are some fun milestones to keep track of as the total solar eclipse unfolds.

As the eclipse progresses and the sun gets thinner in the sky, it will start to get eerily dark, according to Tyson.

The "diamond ring effect" is shown following totality of the solar eclipse at Palm Cove in Australia's Tropical North Queensland in 2012.

When the last beams of sunlight are about to become obscured, look out for the “diamond ring effect”: The sun’s atmosphere will appear as an illuminated halo, and the last light still visible will look like the diamond of a giant ring.

As the sunlight decreases even further, an effect known as Baily’s beads will be created by the moon’s rugged terrain. Tiny “beads” of light will be visible for only a few seconds around the dark moon, as the last bits of sunlight peer through the moon’s mountains and valleys.

When the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to remove eclipse glasses and look at the total solar eclipse with the naked eye.

The Bailey's Beads effect is seen as the moon makes its final move over the sun during the total solar eclipse on Monday, August 21, 2017 above Madras, Oregon.

Some lucky sky-watchers may even catch a glimpse of a comet .

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks — nicknamed the “ devil comet ” because an eruption last year left it with two distinct trails of gas and ice in the shape of devil horns — is currently visible from the Northern Hemisphere as it swings through the inner solar system.

The comet can be seen in the early evenings by gazing toward the west-northwest horizon. During the eclipse, when skies darken during totality, it may be possible to see the comet near Jupiter, but its visibility will depend on whether it’s in the middle of an outburst and thus brighter than normal.

Most likely, all eyes will be on the alignment of the moon and sun.

“Most people won’t even notice,” Tyson said. “But if you know to look, it’s there.”

When is the next solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse will be in 2026, but it will mostly pass over the Arctic Ocean, with some visibility in Greenland, Iceland, Portugal and northern Spain. In 2027, a total solar eclipse will be visible in Spain and a swath of northern Africa.

The next total solar eclipse visible from North America will be in 2033, but only over Alaska. Then in 2044, a total solar eclipse will cross Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, parts of Canada and Greenland.

The next total solar eclipse to cross the continental U.S. coast-to-coast in will occur in 2045. The path of totality for that eclipse will cut through California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and Florida.

How much does the cheapest travel insurance cost?

The cheapest travel insurance in our rating is $334. This is for a WorldTrips Atlas Journey Preferred travel insurance plan, based on the average of seven quotes for travelers of various ages to international destinations with a range of trip values.

Factors that determine travel insurance cost

There are several factors that determine the cost of travel insurance, including:

  • Age and number of travelers being insured.
  • Trip length.
  • Total trip cost.
  • The travel insurance plan you choose.
  • The travel insurance company.
  • Any add-ons, features or upgraded benefits you include in the travel insurance plan.
Expert tip: “In general, travelers can expect to pay anywhere from 4% to 10% of their total prepaid, non-refundable trip costs,” said Suzanne Morrow, CEO of InsureMyTrip.

Is buying the cheapest travel insurance a good idea?

Choosing cheaper travel insurance without paying attention to what a plan covers and excludes could leave you underinsured for your trip. Comparing travel insurance plans side-by-side can help ensure you get enough coverage to protect yourself financially in an emergency for the best price.

For example, compare these two Travelex travel insurance plans:

  • Travel Basic is cheaper but it only provides up to $15,000 for emergency medical expense coverage. You’ll also have to pay extra for coverage for children.
  • Travel Select will cost you a bit more but it covers up to $50,000 in medical expenses and includes coverage for kids aged 17 and younger traveling with you. It also offers upgrades such additional medical coverage, “cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage and an adventure sports rider that may be a good fit for your trip.

Reasons to consider paying more for travel insurance

Make sure you understand what you’re giving up if you buy the cheapest travel insurance. Here are a few reasons you may consider paying a little extra for better coverage.

  • Emergency medical. The best travel medical insurance offers primary coverage for emergency medical benefits. Travel insurance with primary coverage can cost more than secondary coverage but will save you from having to file a claim with your health insurance company before filing a travel insurance claim.
  • Emergency evacuation. If you’re traveling to a remote location or planning a boat excursion on your trip, look at travel insurance with a high medical evacuation insurance limit. If you are injured while traveling, transportation to the nearest adequate medical facility could cost in the tens to hundreds of thousands. It may make sense to pay more for travel insurance with robust emergency evacuation coverage.
  • Flexibility. To maximize your trip flexibility, you might consider upgrading your travel insurance to “ cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage . This will increase the cost of your travel insurance but allow you to cancel your trip for any reason — not just those listed in your policy. The catch is that you’ll need to cancel at least 48 hours before your trip and will only be reimbursed 50% or 75% of your trip expenses, depending on the plan.
  • Upgrades. Many travel insurance plans have optional extras like car rental collision and adventure sports (which may otherwise be excluded from coverage). These will cost you extra but may give you the coverage you need.

How to find the cheapest travel insurance

The best way to find the cheapest travel insurance is to determine what you’re looking for in a travel insurance policy and compare plans that meet your needs.

“Travel insurance isn’t one-size-fits-all. Every trip is different, and every traveler has different needs, wants and concerns. This is why comparison is key,” said Morrow.

Consider the following factors when comparing cheap travel insurance plans.

  • How often you’re traveling. A single-trip policy may be the most cost-effective if you’re only going on a single trip this year. But a multi-trip travel insurance plan may be cheaper if you’re going on multiple international trips throughout the year. Annual travel insurance policies cover you for a whole year as long as each trip doesn’t exceed a certain number of days, usually 30 to 90 days.
  • Credit card has travel insurance benefits. The best credit cards offer perks and benefits, and many offer travel insurance-specific benefits. The coverage types and benefit limits can vary, and you must put the entire trip cost on the credit card to use the coverage. If your trip costs more than the coverage limit on your card, you can supplement the rest with a cheaper travel insurance plan.
  • The coverage you need. When looking for the best travel insurance option at the most affordable price, only buy extras and upgrades you really need. A basic plan may only provide up to $500 in baggage insurance, but if you only plan to take $300 worth of clothes and accessories, you don’t need to pay more for higher coverage limits.

Is cheap travel insurance worth it?

Cheap travel insurance can be worth it, as long as you understand the plan limitations and exclusions. Taking the time to read your policy, especially the fine print, well before your trip can ensure there won’t be any surprises about what’s covered once your journey begins.

“If a traveler is looking for coverage for travel delays, cancellations, interruptions, medical and baggage — a comprehensive travel insurance policy will provide the most bang for their buck,” said Morrow. But if you’re on a tight budget and are only worried about emergency medical care and evacuation coverage while traveling abroad, stand-alone options are cheaper.

Before buying travel insurance, you should also consider what your health insurance will cover.

“Most domestic health insurance plans, including Medicare, will not cover medical bills abroad,” said Morrow. Even if you’re staying stateside, you may find value in an affordable travel insurance plan with medical coverage if you have a high-deductible health plan (HDHP).

A cheap travel insurance plan is better than none at all if you end up in a situation that would have covered some or all of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip expenses.

Methodology

Our insurance experts reviewed 1,855 coverage details and 567 rates to determine the best travel insurance . From those top-scoring travel insurance plans, we chose the most affordable for our rating of the cheapest travel insurance.

Insurers could score up to 100 points based on the following factors:

  • Cost: 40 points. We scored the average cost of each travel insurance policy for a variety of trips and traveler profiles.
  • Medical expenses: 10 points. We scored travel medical insurance by the coverage amount available. Travel insurance policies with emergency medical expense benefits of $250,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.
  • Medical evacuation: 10 points. We scored each plan’s emergency medical evacuation coverage by coverage amount. Travel insurance policies with medical evacuation expense benefits of $500,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.
  • Pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver: 10 points. We gave full points to travel insurance policies that cover pre-existing medical conditions if certain conditions are met.
  • Missed connection: 10 points. Travel insurance plans with missed connection benefits of $1,000 per person or more received full points.
  • “Cancel for any reason” upgrade: 5 points. We gave points to travel insurance plans with optional “cancel for any reason” coverage that reimburses up to 75%.
  • Travel delay required waiting time: 5 points. We gave 5 points to travel insurance policies with travel delay benefits that kick in after a delay of 6 hours or less.
  • Cancel for work reasons: 5 points. If a travel insurance plan allows you to cancel your trip for work reasons, such as your boss requiring you to stay and work, we gave it 5 points.
  • Hurricane and severe weather: 5 points. Travel insurance plans that have a required waiting period for hurricane and weather coverage of 12 hours or less received 5 points.

Some travel insurance companies may offer plans with additional benefits or lower prices than the plans that scored the highest, so make sure to compare travel insurance quotes to see your full range of options.

Cheapest travel insurance FAQs

When buying travel insurance, cheapest is not always the best. The most affordable travel insurance plans typically offer fewer coverages with lower policy limits and few or no optional upgrades. Add up your total nonrefundable trip costs and compare travel insurance plans and available features that cover your travel expenses. This strategy can help you find the cheapest travel insurance policy that best protects you from financial loss if an unforeseen circumstance arises.

Get the coverage you need: Best travel insurance of 2024

According to our analysis, WorldTrips , Travel Insured International and Travelex offer the best cheap travel insurance. Policy coverage types and limits can vary by each travel insurance provider, so the best way to get the cheapest travel insurance plan is to compare several policies and companies to find the right fit for your budget.

A good rate for travel insurance depends on your budget and coverage needs. The most comprehensive travel insurance plan is usually not the cheapest. But cheap trip insurance may not have enough coverage or the types of coverage you want. Comparing different levels of coverage and how much they cost can help you find the best cheap insurance for travel.

The average cost of travel insurance is between 5% to 6% of your total travel expenses for one trip, according to our analysis of rates. However, you may find cheaper travel insurance if you opt for a plan with fewer benefits or lower coverage limits. How much you pay for travel insurance will also depend on the number of travelers covered, their ages, the length of the trip and any upgrades you add to your plan.

Travel insurance covers nonrefundable, prepaid trip costs — up to the policy coverage limits — when your trip is interrupted or canceled for a covered reason outlined in your plan documents. Even the cheapest travel insurance policies usually provide coverage for:

  • Medical emergencies.
  • Trip delays.
  • Trip interruption.
  • Trip cancellation.
  • Lost, stolen or damaged luggage.

However, if you’re looking to save on travel insurance, you can shop for a policy that only has travel medical insurance and does not include benefits for trip cancellation .

Even when you buy cheap travel insurance, you can often use upgrade options to customize your policy to meet your specific needs.

Some common travel insurance add-ons you may want to consider include:

  • Rental car damage coverage.
  • Medical bundle.
  • Security bundle.
  • Accidental death and dismemberment coverage.
  • Adventure sports bundle.
  • Pet bundle.
  • Wedding bundle.
  • “Cancel for work reasons” coverage.
  • “Interruption for any reason” (IFAR) coverage.
  • “Cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage .

Some Disney fans abused disability access to skip lines. Now rules are changing.

After use tripled, disney is restricting who can use the service at its florida and california theme parks.

florida travel advice

Disney will soon change its policies for theme park visitors with disabilities, restricting eligibility for services that help some people avoid waiting in line for rides.

The updates, which the company posted on park websites this week, have created a wave of uncertainty among fans, who are left wondering whether they’ll be able to continue using the disability access service known as DAS. The shift comes as Disney acknowledges that some customers have misused the program; the company has already taken some steps to crack down on abuse.

According to Disney, disability access has become the most widely requested service at the parks, with use more than tripling over the past five years.

“The system has always had some level of questionable use, if not abuse,” Len Testa, president of the planning site Touring Plans and co-author of the Unofficial Guides to Walt Disney World and Disneyland , said in an email.

The changes at the Florida and California theme parks include updates on who is allowed to use DAS, how many people can join them in receiving benefits, how to apply for it and ways they can use it.

The free service lets guests reserve a time to show up for a ride with a comparable wait to the in-person queue at the time they request it. For example, if someone wants to ride Space Mountain and the wait is 45 minutes long, they can request a slot 45 minutes later. They don’t have to stay in line while they wait, and they can use an expedited lane when they show up.

Under the new guidelines posted online this week, the disability access program is “intended to accommodate a small percentage of Guests who, due to a developmental disability like autism or similar, are unable to wait in a conventional queue for an extended period or time.” The changes go into effect on May 20 at Walt Disney World and on June 18 at Disneyland.

The service has always been meant for those visitors described in the new policy, Disney told The Washington Post, but the program did not use such specific language in the past and was granted to users with other needs.

Disney did not answer specific questions about what options would be available for people with disabilities other than those laid out in the new policy. The company said visitors should check the updated websites to explore the “suite of services for guests with disabilities that match their needs” and follow up with employees for an individual conversation if needed.

Disney is also adding options for people who might have difficulty with lines, including a “return to queue” process that has not yet been fully detailed for people who need frequent restroom access. Disney will have more workers, called cast members, available and trained to help direct guests to the options they need; health professionals from Inspire Health Alliance will help Disney employees determine eligibility as needed. They will not require documentation, unlike the services at other theme park companies including Universal and Six Flags .

That recent growth in DAS users coincides with the 2021 introduction of Genie Plus, a paid service that lets people skip long lines. On Thursday, the add-on cost was between $17 and $27 a person at Walt Disney World, depending on which of the four parks people were visiting.

“We knew that the system was under more stress than it could handle,” Testa said.

On forums for Disney fans, social media and blogs, people who said they or family members have used the service in the past for conditions such as multiple sclerosis, anxiety, breathing issues and Crohn’s disease expressed concern about what the changes would mean for them. Some said they saw the update as a way to force people to purchase Genie Plus if they wanted to avoid long lines. Many said they felt disappointed that a formerly safe and accommodating vacation spot suddenly seemed like it would be more difficult to navigate.

At Disneyland, visitors will be able to use a virtual video chat ahead of a trip or talk to someone in person at the parks. In Florida, visitors will only have the option of a virtual video chat, but it will be available ahead of time or on-site.

“Disney is dedicated to providing a great experience for all Guests, including those with disabilities, which is why we are so committed to delivering a wide range of innovative support services aimed at helping our Guests with disabilities have a wonderful time when visiting our theme parks,” the company said in a statement.

Stacey Crane, a frequent Disney visitor from Kentucky who posts Disney content on YouTube , said she has qualified for the disability service because of stomach issues. She’s not sure how her next trip in July will go, and wondered how the “return to queue” system would work.

“There’s so many other health issues that may be affected by this,” she said. “I’m just nervous to see how it’s going to pan out.”

She said that on a recent trip, even with the disability service, she needed to leave an expedited lane quickly and found it difficult.

“If I need to leave, I need to leave; I don’t need to take my time, I need to go,” she said. “It makes it a lot easier for us right now.”

The current system has been in place since 2013, when it replaced a previous version that granted visitors with disabilities a card that let them skip lines for rides. The New York Post reported that year that some wealthy New York City families were hiring guides with disabilities to usher them to the front of lines.

In recent years, some have called out social media users for allegedly promoting misuse of the disability access service. When Disney abruptly banned third-party tour guides from operating in its parks last year, the company said it was in part because of inappropriate use of the program for disabled visitors.

Testa said he was recently at Epcot in Florida with family members and overheard one man recommend the DAS program to another, explaining that it let his family maximize the number of rides they could get on. When the other man said his child didn’t really have a disability, the first one assured him that no one asked many questions.

“I’m looking at this like, ‘This is why we don’t have nice things,’” Testa said. “It took every fiber of my being not to jump into the conversation and say ‘Just don’t do that.’” When guests in the park are telling other guests how to game the system, something has to change.”

The company said that in part because of misuse, the program has become unwieldy and that changes were needed to preserve it for the people for whom it was intended. The new policy says the service will be available for the individual who needs it and immediate family only, or no more than four people total if they aren’t immediate family members. Under the program that’s changing, it is good for a party of six.

Disney warns — as it did before — that there are steep consequences for making false statements to get the disability service.

“The Guest will be permanently barred from entering Walt Disney World Resort and the Disneyland Resort, and any previously purchased Annual Passes, Magic Key passes, tickets and other park products and services will be forfeited and not refunded,” the website says.

More about Disney

Outsiders banned: Disney theme park trips cost a lot — more every year — and take heaps of planning to pull off. But the company has recently banned some independent tour guides from helping visitors navigate the parks, citing “unauthorized commercial activities.”

Next-level fandom: For some Disney fans, donning a pair of Mickey ears isn’t enough. In a practice called “ Disneybounding ,” they create entire character-inspired outfits that don’t run afoul of rules that ban costumes for adults. Disney food fans had a reason to celebrate when a beloved snack, Dole Whip , came to grocery stores. How does it stack up to the parks version?

Political crossfire: The most magical place on earth has gotten political , thanks to a battle with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R). While several observers have suggested Disney World move out of the Sunshine State, experts say it’s a goofy proposition. Fan sites have been forced to add coverage of lawsuits to their standard lineup about rides, churros and characters.

Solar eclipse 2024: Follow the path of totality

Solar eclipse, what you need to know to watch monday's total solar eclipse.

The NPR Network

A stunning celestial event is visible across the country Monday, when the moon crosses directly in front of the sun: a total solar eclipse. For those in the path of totality, there will be a few brief moments when the moon completely covers the sun and the world becomes dark.

Traveling for totality? Skip ahead.

This will be the last chance to catch a total solar eclipse in the continental U.S. for about 20 years, so here's what you need to know to safely enjoy!

When is the eclipse?

April 8, 2024 there will be a total solar eclipse that crosses from the Pacific coast of Mexico through the United States.

What is totality and why it matters

According to NASA , totality will start around 11:07 a.m. PDT/1:07 EDT in Mexico and leave Maine at around 1:30 pm PDT/3:30 pm EDT.

Here's what time the eclipse will be visible in your region

Here's what time the eclipse will be visible in your region

Check out this table for when the partial eclipse and totality are visible in each region or check by zip code here.

A partial solar eclipse will be visible across the contiguous United States, so even if you're not directly in the path, you should be able to see something special, weather permitting.

Unable to get to totality? We'll be sharing highlights here from across the NPR Network throughout the day Monday if you can't see it in real time.

Where to see totality?

More than 30 million people live in the path of totality for Monday's eclipse, and many more in nearby areas.

Here's what we know about Monday's weather forecast.

Why totality matters

As NPR's Neil Greenfieldboyce explains , "During a total eclipse, the sky darkens suddenly and dramatically . The temperature drops. Stars come out. Beautiful colors appear around the horizon. And the once-familiar sun becomes a black void in the sky surrounded by the glowing corona — that's the ghostly white ring that is the sun's atmosphere."

For April's eclipse, going from 'meh' to 'OMG' might mean just driving across town

Eclipse Science

For april's eclipse, going from 'meh' to 'omg' might mean just driving across town.

A partial eclipse, while still a fun experience, is hardly as dramatic. Those with a view of the partial eclipse will see crescent-shaped shadows like those seen here in 2017.

How to watch safely

If you plan to look directly at the eclipse (partial or totality), you're going to need eclipse glasses handy because looking directly at the sun without proper protection ( traditional sunglasses don't count! ) can be harmful to your eyes.

The perfect celestial soundtrack to the total solar eclipse

The perfect celestial soundtrack to the total solar eclipse

As NPR's Joe Hernandez explains, "Proper eye protection must be worn throughout a total solar eclipse — except for the roughly 3 1/2 to 4 minutes when the moon fully obscures the sun, a brief period known as 'totality.' (You will need to take your glasses off during totality to actually see it.)"

If you don't have access to eclipse glasses, you can get crafty with things you have around the house ( like some of us did back in 2017!) More on that here.

Traveling for totality?

The celestial event is driving a ton of domestic travel to the path of totality. If you're headed out of town to view the eclipse, here are some NPR Network resources for areas in the path of totality:

Texas The path of totality crosses through the Lone Star State, with some areas expecting a possible influx of visitors in the hundreds of thousands to catch prime viewing. Our member stations across the state have gathered local resources to help you navigate the region and the eclipse!

  • San Antonio: Check out the latest from Texas Public Radio
  • Dallas: Explore KERA's coverage for the latest
  • Austin: Head to KUT for the best local resources

Arkansas The eclipse will be cutting through the state, putting Little Rock in the path of totality. Check out Little Rock Public Radio for local resources.

The southwestern edge of the state will be well-positioned to witness the total solar eclipse this year. Kentucky Public Radio is covering the eclipse throughout the region, from Kentuckiana eclipse mania to the University of Louisville's free class about the celestial event. Keep an eye on WKMS for the latest local updates.

Missouri The southeastern corner of the state will be in the path of totality, crossing across towns like Whitewater and Ste. Genevieve. Head to St. Louis Public Radio for local coverage and resources. Illinois Carbondale seems to have won the eclipse lottery, being in the path of totality both in 2017 and for this year's eclipse . For resources from across the state, check out Illinois Public Media .

Indiana A huge portion of the state will be within the path of totality, giving cities across Indiana, including Bloomington and Indianapolis, prime viewing of the eclipse.

  • Bloomington: Check out Indiana Public Media
  • Indianapolis: Head to WFYI for the latest
  • Fort Wayne: Just north of the path of totality, WBOI has resources for the Allen County area

Ohio The Buckeye State is getting bisected by this year's path of totality, plunging a number of the state's most populous areas into darkness for a few minutes on Monday.

  • Cleveland: Head to Ideastream Public Media for the latest.
  • Columbus: With the capital city just south of totality, head to WOSU for regional resources.
  • Cincinnati: Totality will just miss the border town. Here are some tips from WVXU on how to navigate the eclipse in the region.

Pennsylvania Only the northwestern-most corner of the state will catch totality, with views from the lakeside in Erie being particularly well-positioned for a stunning viewing experience. WESA has more from across the region.

Plan to watch the eclipse from a wild mountain summit? Be ready for harsh conditions

Plan to watch the eclipse from a wild mountain summit? Be ready for harsh conditions

New York Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Plattsburgh will fall under the path of totality on Monday. If you're planning to travel to the region for the best views, here are some local resources to stay safe and informed:

  • Buffalo: Head to WBFO for the latest
  • Syracuse: WAER has more on plans in the Salt City
  • North Country: NCPR has the latest from across the region, as well as information on local viewing events to check out

Vermont The Green Mountain State will see totality across its most populous region, including Burlington and Montpelier, as well as the Northeast Kingdom on the Canadian border. Vermont Public has everything you need to know to navigate your time in the region to enjoy the eclipse safely. New Hampshire The northernmost region of the Granite State will be in the path of totality, providing prime viewing to those in Coos County. NHPR has info on local events, travel updates as well as special coverage with New Hampshire Public Television. Maine The last state in the path of totality in the U.S., much of Northern Maine will be positioned for prime viewing. The rural region is preparing for an influx of visitors, and safety officials are encouraging visitors and locals alike to be prepared. Maine Public will be covering the eclipse and has everything you need to know to navigate the region safely.

How to document the eclipse safely

With the ease of cell photography , it can be tempting to reach for your phone to document the eclipse and the moments of totality, but make sure to do so safely.

As NPR's Scott Neuman explains , "For starters, you'll need to wear eclipse glasses or similar protective eye gear while aiming your camera or even just observing the eclipse."

Feeling ambitious? Here are a few more tips.

Or if you're not inclined to capture the moment visually, you lean into some other forms of creative expression. Indiana, for example, has named Linda Neal Reising the official poet in the state for this year's eclipse.

As former NPR reporter and eclipse superfan David Baron shared with Life Kit , viewing totality "[is] like you've left the solar system and are looking back from some other world."

So consider focusing on being present in the moment to enjoy the celestial spectacle.

The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card* -- Wells Fargo’s latest and best travel card -- recently launched with an impressive set of features. Its competitive rewards, welcome bonus and redemption options take aim at incumbent travel credit cards from Chase, American Express and Capital One.

What gives Wells Fargo’s first foray into the point-transfer space an edge is that you don’t have to book travel in a portal to earn the highest rewards rates.

Here’s why we think the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey could go toe-to-toe with some of the best travel credit cards, plus four insider tips to help you decide if you should add it to your credit card lineup.

Before we dive into the hidden features and benefits, here’s an overview of what you can expect with the Autograph Journey:

  • Earn 60,000 welcome bonus rewards points after spending $4,000 in purchases within three months of account opening.
  • Earn unlimited 5x points on hotels, 4x points on airlines, 3x points on other travel and dining and 1x on other purchases.
  • Receive an annual statement credit with a $50 minimum airline purchase.
  • No foreign transaction fees.
  • Other benefits include trip cancellation and interruption insurance, lost luggage reimbursement, roadside dispatch and cell phone insurance.
  • $95 annual fee.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card

Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

4 important details about the autograph journey .

Here’s a rundown of four facts we discovered about the Autograph Journey that you should know when deciding whether to apply.

1. You can transfer points with Wells Fargo point-based cards

The launch of the Autograph Journey also marks the first transferable points program from Wells Fargo, which joins other card issuers like Chase and Capital One, which have their own pooling programs .

Autograph Journey will be able to do a points transfer with the no-annual-fee Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card . This is especially notable since the Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card offers bonus rewards in different categories than the Autograph Journey.

For example, the Autograph card earns unlimited 3x points on restaurants, travel, gas stations, transit, popular streaming services and phone plans, plus 1x points on other purchases. So you can maximize your point earning across different categories, then transfer your points to your Autograph Journey account to access premium travel redemptions.

2. It offers more options for earning bonus miles on travel than some competitors

The Autograph Journey will offer more flexibility than many travel rewards cards when it comes to earning more points on travel purchases. For example, cardholders earn unlimited 5x points on hotels booked directly with hotel brands and 4x points on airfare booked with airlines.

This helps the card stand out from other popular travel credit cards that offer the most bonus points only if you book travel through their portals. For example, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card * and the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card * only offer the highest bonus rewards on travel booked through Capital One Travel. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card also offers its highest rate of 5x points on travel booked through Chase Travel℠, whereas other travel purchases earn 2x points.

Autograph Journey cardholders also earn a minimum of 3x points on other travel purchases, which could include rental cars, cruises and travel booked through online travel agencies like Expedia and Priceline.

3. The card may grow in value as more transfer partners join

The Autograph Journey Card will earn flexible travel rewards points that transfer to a selection of airline and hotel partners, similar to Amex Membership Rewards points or Chase Ultimate Rewards . While the list of transfer partners is limited, Wells Fargo stated in its initial press release that “more partners will continue to be added throughout the year.”

Points transfers could dramatically change the value proposition of the Autograph Journey, especially if new partners include domestic airlines and popular hotel loyalty programs.

Wells Fargo point transfers will be available to new cardholders starting on April 4. For now, Wells Fargo transfer partners include the following:

4. You may need to wait to apply

If you’ve applied for another Wells Fargo card in the last six months, you’ll likely have to wait a little longer before applying for the Autograph Journey.

Wells Fargo states in its terms and conditions, “If you opened a Wells Fargo Credit Card account within the last six months, then you may not qualify to open an additional Wells Fargo Credit Card account. We may also limit how many open Wells Fargo Credit Card accounts you have.”

So if you want the new Autograph Journey, you should steer clear of applying for other cards from Wells Fargo for now. If you’re approved and use the card responsibly for six months or longer, you can consider adding additional Wells Fargo credit cards to your portfolio.
