Everything you need to know to plan an EPIC trip to Sikkim

Glittering glacial lakes, endless pastures, waterfalls at every turn, quiet monastery towns, and scenic drives on some of the worst roads we’ve encountered on our travels made our trip to Sikkim an adventure we will never forget

Gurudongmar lake Sikkim

The state of Sikkim, nestled in the North Eastern part of India, isn’t exactly on the tourist radar. But it should be. The state has so much to offer to visitors. You will fall short of words to describe its natural beauty. Towns such as Gangtok and Pelling have some gorgeous hotels and sights that ensure a memorable holiday.

But the lack of infrastructure, especially in areas such as North Sikkim, make the journey challenging. If that makes you apprehensive, skip North Sikkim and visit just Gangtok and Pelling on your trip to Sikkim or choose a trip to Ladakh, India instead (similar panoramas, better infrastructure). However if you’re an adventurer at heart, then here’s our itinerary that covers most of Sikkim for you:

ITINERARY FOR A TRIP TO SIKKIM

Day 1: fly to bagdogra airport and transfer to gangtok, days 2-3: explore gangtok and surroundings.

  • Days 4-6: North Sikkim Tour: Visit Gurudongmar Lake, Lachen, Lachung
  • Day 6: Yumthang Valley and transfer back to Gangtok

Day 7: Transfer to Pelling

Days 8-9: explore pelling and surroundings, day 10: transfer to bagdogra airport and flight back home.

North Sikkim tour in a rental cab

BUDGETING FOR A TRIP TO SIKKIM

Expenditure (true of October 2017)  on a  10 day trip for a couple – INR 90,000 (£1000).  Of course this sum varies depending on where you’re flying from or the kinds of hotels you’re choosing. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Flights (New Delhi- Bagdogra) INR 12000 per person
  • North Sikkim Tour (2N/3D) including transfers, hotels, and permits INR 25000
  • Bagdogra Airport- Gangtok Private Transfer INR 3500
  • Gangktok 1 day cab rental for sightseeing INR 2500
  • Gangtok- Pelling Private Transfer INR 4000
  • Pelling 1 day cab rental for sightseeing INR INR 2500
  • Pelling-Bagdogra Airport private transfer in a big car (please do not opt for a small car with low clearance for this stretch, the road is horrendous) INR 4000
  • Hotels in Gangtok and Pelling – this depends on your preference but we’d suggest setting aside at least INR 4000 for a comfortable hotel
  • Miscellaneous meals, entry fee etc INR 6000

GETTING AROUND IN SIKKIM: CABS AND ROADS

Self drive isn’t an option in Sikkim as there are no rental cars available. You could drive your own car from a neighbouring state but you will need multiple permits to visit various places of interest. Due to the presence of multiple taxi unions and requirements for permits, we suggest booking your transportation with a local tour agency that will sort out both cabs and permits for you

Irrespective of whether you choose a company recommended by us or your family/friends, make SURE (we cannot stress this enough) that you have written confirmation of the kind of transfers you have chosen (private/shared), the kind of car that will be provided to you (4×4, 2 wheel drive etc), and a list of inclusions (e.g. cost of permits, day trips etc) in order to prevent paying more at a later stage.

We booked ALL our transfers and North Sikkim tour with Galaxy Tours  (contact Tenzing)after reading several good reviews on Tripadvisor. They were prompt in their communication online which put us at ease. We chose private transfers all along and a 2N/3D North Sikkim Tour. There were a few minor hiccups in service once we got there but overall we would definitely recommend them.

DAY BY DAY BREAKDOWN OF A TRIP TO SIKKIM WITH LOTS OF TIPS 🙂

On this day you will arrive at Bagdogra Airport. As you collect your luggage and exit the airport, expect a chaotic mass of taxi drivers, tourists, and travel agents. You can choose a taxi at the spot but we would suggest booking one in advance so:

  • You know you are in reliable hands and have someone who can be held accountable should something go wrong
  • You do not have to waste time finding a cab and bargaining on the spot.

Whether you book a cab right there or book one in advance, a private transfer to Gangtok should cost between INR 3000 and INR 3500. This cost goes down significantly if you choose a shared transfer. The road from Bagdogra Airport to Gangtok is one of the few decent roads in Sikkim, so expect a comfortable journey with a few bumps along the way.

Accommodation in Gangtok

There is no dearth of accommodation to suit all budgets in Gangtok. We chose to stay in a luxurious boutique hotel that boasts of a history like no other. Elgin Nor Khill used to the Royal Guesthouse of the King of Sikkim. It has now been refurbished into a hotel but it’s grandeur remains intact. The lobby is bedecked with artifacts and artwork that reflects the rich culture of Sikkim. You could choose a room in the older, more traditionally-furnished wing or the modern wing that boasts of clean cuts and contemporary furnishings. We were greeted with cherry liquor and huge smiles at check in and this continued for the length of the stay – the staff at Elgin Nor Khill well and truly stands out. We really enjoyed our stay here!

Do beware – the hotel is located right next to the iconic Paljor Football Stadium, perfect if you enjoy the sport but a bit of a nuisance if you don’t as the sound of matches, practices floats through the windows.

Gangtok  is the largest town in Sikkim and the perfect place to explore the sites and sounds of East Sikkim. The bustling town is also home to some amazing eateries. Spend your days in Gangtok sampling local food, sipping on a cup of local black tea as you watch the locals go about their lives, and visiting impressive sites in the area.  Here are a couple of places we’d recommend in Gangtok

  • Go for an aimless stroll on MG Road. Pick up some souvenirs or just sample some local foods such as momos (steamed dumplings) and  thukpa (a hearty noodle soup)
  • If you’re looking for scrumptious momos (steamed dumplings) try Taste of Tibet and the iconic Momo Roll Corner located up a flight of stairs. Both these hole-in-the-wall eateries are situated on the busy MG Road. Here there are momo shops by the dozen and we tried a fair few, but these are the two we liked best. Visit for a super affordable snack/meal on the go.
  • If you’re looking for a more comfortable place to while some time away, then visit B ibliothéque café or the café at Bookman’s B&B for breakfast or brunch.
  • Spend an afternoon at The Tibetology Museum to acquaint yourself with Buddhism and learn more about the fascinating monasteries in the area. Combine it with a visit to Rumtek Monastery.
  • If you’re not visiting North Sikkim, then we would recommend renting a car for a day (see the budgeting section for approximate prices) and visiting some sites in the area including the glittering Tsomgo/Changu Lake and Tashi View Point. However if you ARE visiting North Sikkim, then you can skip these sites because you will be lots of waterfalls, glacial lakes, and panoramic view points there.

Days 4: North Sikkim Tour: Drive from Gangtok to Lachen

Let the fun (and back aches 😉 ) begin!! For the next 3 days, you will be spending over 12 hours a day in your rental car on roads that aren’t worthy of being called roads, so make sure you’ve stocked up on snacks, some music, and optimism!

An early wake-up call followed by an arduous but scenic drive 8 hour drive will bring you to Lachen. Lachen is a small village, which is the perfect place to break the journey between Gangtok and Gurudongmar Lake.  The drive to Lachen is laden by nature’s marvels – stop for photographs with waterfalls, marvel at meandering brooks, or just sip on a cup of tea at a small eatery that offers stunning views of the Himalayas. Roads in North Sikkim are in bad shape, so the drive is bound to leave you exhausted. Rest well because you have a long and exciting day ahead of you.

Lachen village drive in North Sikkim

Accommodation and meals in Lachen :

Basic accommodation and meals are included in the price of the North Sikkim Tour we mentioned in the budgeting section (INR 25000/£300). But do beware that this accommodation is as basic as it gets – think home-stays, unpredictable electricity, questionable bedding, and tiny rooms. However the hosts are hospitable and always willing to provide hot water or an extra blanket should you need it.

If you enjoy comfortable accommodation, then we’d suggest opting for a North Sikkim Tour that includes just a cab and a driver and booking accommodation yourself. In this case, you could stay at the slightly more upscale Apple Orchard Resort in Lachen . The hotel was closed at the time we visited but we heard great things about it.

Day 5: Visit Gurudongmar Lake and sleep in Lachung

You will need to leave your hotel by 3 am for the long and exciting drive to Gurudongmar Lake , one of the highest and most remote lakes in the world. The journey takes about 5 hours each way from Lachen. You will be off-roading for the majority of this time as a lot of the ‘roads’ in the area are just gravel and pebbles. Having said that, the mountain views around you will hypnotize you into oblivion. As you near Gurudongmar Lake, bright blue skies and crisp mountain air will beckon you into submission. Before you know it, you will be staring at a glistening water body, surrounded by mountains and glaciers. This is it- you are here!

At 18000 feet there’s little you can do other than stopping and staring at nature’s wonders. But do click a photograph or two to preserve the moment for posterity. Gurudongmar Lake is spellbinding and the definite highlight of a trip to Sikkim. Due to the lack of oxygen at such high altitudes you should only stay here for 30 minutes or so. This is followed by another long and gorgeous drive to Lachung, where you will stay for the night.

Couple at Gurudongmar lake in Sikkim

Accommodation and meals in Lachung :

Basic accommodation and meals are included in the price of the North Sikkim Tour we mentioned in the budgeting section (INR 25000/£300). Lachung is bigger than Lachen and consequently more developed. The hotel included in the tour is an extremely basic hotel – ok for a stop over for the night but nothing else!

If you enjoy comfortable accommodation, then opt North Sikkim Tour that includes just a cab and a driver and booking accommodation yourself. In this case, you could stay at stay at the Yarlam Resort in Lachung . The hotel provides gorgeous views of the surrounding mountains and it’s easy to spend a couple of nights in the lap of nature here. However do beware that connectivity is a problem in the area, so you might not want to stay longer than necessary.

Day 6: Yumthang Valley, Zero Point, and transfer back to Gangtok

The third and last day of your North Sikkim tour will take you to lots of interesting sites. Yumthang Valley is particularly resplendent during the month of April when it is covered with purple flowers. At other times of the year, it offers some stunning panoramas. Continue onto Zero Point, if the idea of seeing snow fascinates you. You could give this a pass during summer months but this place can be gorgeous and dramatic during winter months (if you’re lucky and the road leading to it isn’t snowed under!). On your way back to Gangtok, stop and stare at the dozens of waterfalls along the way.

The one we specially enjoyed was Bhim Nala Falls (also known as the Amitabh Bachan Falls) – we opted out of visiting Nathula Pass and consequently escaped the hordes of day trippers that stop by these falls at the exact same time of the day. We were the only ones around and had a great time. The roads of North Sikkim continued to be the worst we’ve ever encountered on our travels. Needless to say, we arrived in Gangtok feeling sore and exhausted! But there’s nothing a hot bath and a hot meal can’t solve.

Amitabh Bachchan waterfalls in North Sikkim

In case you thought your tryst with the disastrous roads of Sikkim was over, you were mistaken. On this morning, we’d suggest getting up without an alarm clock and enjoying a languorous breakfast before setting out for monastery town of Pelling. The drive is bumpy but once you get to Pelling, you will be stunned at how peaceful it is. Spend the next 3 days relaxing, exploring monasteries, and chasing waterfalls around Pelling.

Accommodation in Pelling

Saved the BEST for the last! We stumbled on a gorgeous property in Pelling and couldn’t believe it hasn’t made it to a ‘100 hotels you need to see before you die’ kind of listicle yet. The Elgin Mount Pandim is a luxurious experiential property which used to be the summer residence of the King of Sikkim.

Rooms are spacious and well-equipped and meals are scrumptious. But the highlight of a stay here is the outdoor spaces. The hotel building is surrounded by 8 acres of private farmland and overlooks some gorgeous Himalayan peaks including Mt. Kanchenjunga, the third highest peak of the world. It’s easy to spend hours sipping on a cup of coffee or nursing a cocktail and staring at the view. Every other guest we met at the hotel felt the same.

The hotel is located away from the hustle bustle of Pelling, right next to the secluded Pemayangtse monastery. We would definitely recommend a stay here if it suits your budget! You can find the best prices here .

Elgin Pelling room view to Kanchenjonga

A three day tour of North Sikkim is bound to leave you exhausted. So we would suggest taking Day 8 to relax and absorb the fresh mountain air. If you choose to stay at The Elgin Mount Pandim you can hop over to the gorgeous Pemayangtse monastery next door or go bird watching in the complex. Take time to absorb the natural beauty of Sikkim and linger over meals – you deserve it!

On your last day in Sikkim, rent a cab to explore the area a bit. There are lots of waterfalls and monasteries in the area, so you could opt for a whole day trip. This is also a good time to see the Pemayangtse monastery if you haven’t seen it yet. Having seen so many waterfalls in Sikkim, we rented a car just for a few hours to go and see the iconic Kanchenjunga Falls and Rimbi Falls – you could do that too. Kanchenjunga Falls  are gorgeous, especially during monsoon months. But if you’re a keen photographer, we would suggest leaving your hotel early and reaching Kanchenjunga Falls before 8.30 am if you want to avoid the crowds.

Night sky at Pelling sikkim with a view of Mt. Kanchenjunga

Spend your last evening in Sikkim relaxing and recounting adventures from the past 10 days.

You might be well rested and fresh but the roads of Sikkim truly have the last laugh – the Pelling-Bagdogra road is one of the worst we encountered in Sikkim and that’s saying something. We suggest starting early and leaving aside at least 9 hours to cover this stretch of 140 kilometres. Gravel roads, potholes, squelchy soil – there’s nothing you won’t encounter here! We are by no means dissuading you, just providing a reality check 🙂

So leave in time and relish the memories of Gurudongmar’s dancing waters, seductive waterfalls, panoramas that wouldn’t be out of place in a fairytale, and the cutest and friendliest locals as you board your flight back home.

Sikkim is surely one of the most beautiful yet underrated places in India. You should also visit east Sikkim. I went to Zuluk, Lungthung ,Nathang Valley,Elephant Lake, Nathu La, Changu Lake and Baba Mandir. It was truly breathtaking. Also, visit in February or March as you can also play with snow then.??

It truly is – Sikkim is gorgeous and has some beautiful spots 🙂

hi Savi Vid, beautifully captured and written. Wanted to know if end December good time to visit Sikkim, are things closed and cant be visited.

Did you get any details on it if good to go in Dec end ? I’m planning to go there on Dec end by self drive and not sure if it’s good to self drive and any permission issues. Any suggestions, please reply back.

Hey Ashish – wouldn’t suggest self driving in December. Would suggest renting a car with a driver from the area

ou have made great discoveries. Wish you always have more health to have more interesting journey.

Thanks a ton 🙂

plan to go sikkim next weak. thanks for sharing.

Glad you found it so helpful 🙂

Hi guys, I have been following your site for 2 years and would have loved to show you around Gangtok. I missed out on stumbling on you. Roads- very bad however people are very good.

Hey Bikash – hope our paths cross whenever we are in Sikkim next. You’re right – the roads are so bad but the people are great 🙂

Planning next visit to sikkim. Thanks for information.

Hey Savi and Vid,

I have been a long time follower of your website and always enjoyed reading your experiences. Reading about your Sikkim trip reminded me of my trip which I took back in 2009 with exactly similar itinerary visiting Gurudongmar Lake, Pelling etc in that very order.

Sikkim is absolutely breath-taking and back-breaking 🙂

Btw, Kanchenjunga is not the second highest peak of the world but the third highest. You missed K2 in the Karakoram range.

Hey Vatsal – thanks for pointing it out, will correct that now. Glad you enjoyed reading the article 🙂

Thanks for sharing!

Happy to know you enjoyed our post…thanks a lot!

Beautiful pictures. This looks amazing in your post. Thank you so much for sharing it.

Awesome experience! Stunning pictures ?

Hello Savi, Can you please tell me if Dec end is a good time to visit Sikkim?

Hey Nainy – December is a good time to visit Sikkim if you’re keen on witnessing snow but some of the lakes etc might be closed due to snowed under 🙂

Hi …..we want to visit Sikkim in June . Especially for gurudongmar. Can we expect clear blue skies in June?

It all depends on the weather and blue skies are something you can never guarantee. That said, June is a great time to visit

We are seniors in good shape. Need comfortable, but not luxury accommodations. We like to hike. Where in Sikkim would you suggest we go. We’ve been to Nepal and Bhutan. Great, but never saw Himalayas from the ground due to air pollution 24/7. Want to go back to see those peaks. But not if they are often covered in pollution. Are quality numbers in Sikkim pretty bad. Can’t get honest answer from anyone in travel biz. What do you recommend?

Iim planning to travel in may last week or june first week.. What do you suggest

June is better 🙂

Great comprehensive article! We recently visited Sikkim and found it so beautiful. Lot of fresh white fluffy snow everywhere. 🙂

Hey glad you enjoyed Sikkim – we were there during the peak of monsoon, so not much snow but plenty of greenery 🙂

Hey! Lovely pictures. We are planning a four day trip to Sikkim in July. As you also went during peak monsoon, please suggest us some nice off beat places we can cover in the short vacation. Thanks!

we want to visit sikkim in January end.Is it preferable during this month?

Hey Harkita – it can get quite cold in January but other than that, it’s a great time to visit Sikkim 🙂

Hey Guys, Brilliant work! Curious question- Are there are visa restrictions to visiting parts of Northern Sikkim (Gurudongmar, Yumthang, Lachen) for non-Indians? We visited Sikkim late 2016 and pretty much most areas to outside of Gangtok & Namchi were a strict no-no unless paperwork was available well in advance- In fact our trip to Tsomgo lake had to be canceled for the same reason.

Keep them posts coming

Hey yes that’s right – a lot of areas in North Sikkim are not accessible to foreign citizens

Hello savi you said Roads are bad but can you tell me are they safe? Means if we compare with Rohtang pass road (Manali).

Hi yes – they are safe but they are in a worse condition that the roads at Rohtang Pass Manali

Hi, Love you both. Me and my husband follow you and love your post. We are planning to visit sikkim in june. I wanted to know whether we have to take any special permission letter or something like that from government or office? All those permit and transfer work is done on spot or something else need to be done. God bless you.

Hey Nihan – You do need some permits, but all the transfer and permit work is done by the travel agents as mentioned in the article above.

We are planning a Family trip to Sikkim in June first week. Plz share your contact details to get a customized itrnerary from you.

Hi we do not customise itineraries. You can use the article above to plan your trip to Sikkim!

I plan to visit in June? What kind of weather to expect and is it a good time to visit Sikkim? Its our first anniversary and I wanted to do something different.

Hey June is a good time to visit Sikkim. Roads are open and accessible and the temperatures range from warm to mild depending on which part of the state you’re in!

Hi Savi and Vid,

I am in love with your blog. Planning to visit Sikkim this september. Do you recommend it during September? Will we have snow during that time?

Regards, Divya Bharadwaj

Hey Divya – thanks a ton. September doesn’t see much snow. However you might find snow if you head to North Sikkim. It is hard to give exact answers as the conditions vary from year to year!

With which travel agency did you book your north sikkim tour of 2N/3D?

It’s mentioned in the article above. Please see the “Getting Around In Sikkim” section of the article 🙂

“Love is in the air” ! It seems you both wear totally lost in the serene surroundings and lush green environment of Sikkim. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hey Guys ! Amazing Itinerary, described beautifully 🙂 I’m also planning to visit Sikkim during X-Mas/NY’19 to witness snowfall and would like to try snow activities such as skiing/snowboarding in Lachung or Yumthang Valley. But not able to find any accurate information on that whether these activities are performed there or not, or is it right time to go there ? Also, will there be any problem due to winters ? like Closed roads or inaccessible places ? Can you enlighten me on this ?

Hey Shubham – snowfall ranges from year to year. That’s why you couldn’t find accurate information. Yes a lot of roads leading to Gurudongmar etc tend to be inaccessible during that time. But this differs from year to year depending on how heavy the snowfall is!

We are starting for Sikkim from Nov 26 . Will we find Gurdongmar lake open that time

Hey you have to check for updates as that is dependent on weather conditions from year to year 🙂

We are planning to visit sikkim in first week of dec. Is it preferable during this month?

Sure why not 🙂

hi savi and vid.

I am planning a small getaway from delhi to darjelling and sikkim in 1st week of december with my family. only constraint is time . we can have maximum 6N/7D trip . Could you please help us out in planning a itenery in which we can cover both the places .

thank a ton.

Hey Atharv – you can cut out North Sikkim from the itinerary above and add Darjeeling instead 🙂

very nice posts keep up the good work

Hi Savi and Vid

enjoyed reading your experiences about sikkim. We are planning to visit Sikkim from 15th Dec on 8 days & 7 nights tour.

Wanted to check if we need book the Lachen/Lachung tour in advance or can we do booking after going to Gantok. We plan to leave for Lachen on Day 3 and back to Gantok on Day 5

Also if you dont mind can you share the name of the travel agent

Hey the travel agent is Galaxy Tours – check out the ‘GETTING AROUND IN SIKKIM: CABS AND ROADS’ section above for more details. We booked the entire North Sikkim Tour with them before reaching Sikkim 🙂

Hi Savi & Vid,

We have also planned for a 10 day trip to Sikkim. Going to follow the same itinerary. Thank you guys for making our planning simple 🙂 . The view from the Elgin Mount Pelling hotel room looks so beautiful. Is the window behind the bed? Can you let me know which room did you go for? Thanks.

Hey the window is usually to the side of the bed 🙂 Forgotten the exact room number, should’ve noted it down. Damn! Send us photos from Sikkim when you go

We are visiting in Sikkim from 9th to 17th feb,

Will we be able to go to Gurudongmar?

Hey Reena – you will have to check the snow and road conditions upon getting to Sikkim – most years you can visit Gurudongmar Lake in Sikkim during winter months, but sometimes the roads leading to it are completely blocked!

Hi savi, thanks for writing a very informative article about visiting Sikkim. It would be very nice if you also mention about Pakyong Airport which has be opened in Sikkim to serve the need of tourism. hope to read more article about Sikkim in future.

thanks and regards Sudhanshu

Hey, can you tell which month of the year did you visit Sikkim? Is November a good time to visit?

We visited end October / early November and it was beautiful 🙂

Which places do you recommend for a weekend trip to Sikkim?

Hey Surabhi – would recommend sticking to Gangtok and surrounds for a weekend trip in Sikkim 🙂

Hey guys! Have been following you guys very dedicatedly! Love your posts! We have planned the exact ten day itenarary suggested by you guys In June mid. Hope it goes well! And yeah the Elgin Mount Pandim room looks gorgeous. Can’t wait to get there !

Hey Varsha,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you but hope you had a great time in Sikkim 🙂 Do update us about your experience

Hello, loved your blog. We are doing a Sikkim trip in May. Instead of Pelling, would you suggest Kalimpong or Darjeeling. We are looking for great home stays in this area. We decided to exclude Pelling since it is too far from the airport. Please advise.

Hey yeah Kalimpong/Darjeeling are good but VERY crowded especially in summer months but you’re right getting to Pelling is a NIGHTMARE 😀

Excellent blog. very informative. Id like to add to this. While your excursion seems to be well planned and quite independent, many inexperienced tourists find themselves at the wrath of local taxi mafia. It would be good if you can throw some light on these nuances. There’s a chain of operators who operate on whatsapp. They will meet you outside the airport, and everything will be good as they wheel you away from the market and other players. Once they have got you to gangtok, you are stuck with them. They ruin your trip, dont turn up in time, provide awful vehicles and everything else that can go wrong. Plus, theyre also very creepy and you never know when they attack. They have common names like sikkimcabs, etc. after charging the ignorant tourist for a large part of the sum, they keep them on tenterhooks by extorting advances. then they cartelise so that you cannot engage anyone from the open market, leaving you no choice and slithering in the midst of your vacation. They have everyone involved so you cannot even complain to the police. This is especially the case for people operating out of siliguri. It is better to get services from people in gangtok than be stuck with someone who operates out of bengal. Sikkim is an amazing place to visit except for the local mafia of these cab services. I just thought its advisable for anyone planning a trip to keep this in mind.

Thanks for that. It’s for that very same reason that we have shared details of the operator we went with and did not have any trouble at all. But I agree, a lot of hill stations in India are currently facing this problem.

Hey which are the best months to travel to sikkim to avoid rains, is june end advisable for the same ? Or winter months are preferable ?

I believe June should be good. Not so sure about Winter as some roads might be snowed under?

We went in October and the weather was great!

North East holidays is awesome and you have added valuable information for the keen visitors to experience this amazing place.Pictures are so beautiful, thanks for sharing this awesome post with us.

Happy to know you enjoyed reading about Sikkim!

Thanks for sharing very helpful for me

Hey hi Firstly this blog has tons of valuable information. i had read several other blogs for Sikkim but by far yours was most informative and well connected. I am planning to visit Sikkim in first 2 weeks of December this year. I intend to do Gangtok, North Sikkim and Darjeeling. What is your take , will the weather be suitable for visiting all the places in north Sikkim .???

Thank you very much 🙂

Hi Yavnika,

Well, can’t really comment on weather – it’s unpredictable isn’t it? From what we have heard, December should be great to visit North Sikkim BUT it all depends on the vagaries of the weather. We’d suggest confirming this with a local tour operator. We went to Sikkim in October and loved the weather at that time

Went through your blog. Well explained. Beautiful pics. I truly congratulate you in doing an awesome job in promoting Sikkim as a new tourist destination to the world. Thank a lot

So detailed and written after so much thought.

Thank you Karan 🙂

We are planning to visit Sikkim, Gangtok and Darjeeling in Last week of October. Is it preferable during this month? is it a good season to visit there with family

We went in October too so should be fine 🙂 We had a good time.

I just loved the photo in Gurudongmer Lake. I become nostalgic. It reminded me the trip of my life with my love. I have been to so many places, read lots of articles but it is one of the best because of all the images you shared. I am feeling lot more romantic. Infact I am unable to express it in words.

So happy to hear that Ranadeep 🙂

You just perfectly described our Sikkim trip and all memories just flashed in front of my eyes. Just wanted to mention that people in Sikkim are the best. So honest, sweet, warm and kind. Polite as anything. They make you feel at home be it cab driver, hotel staff or police all are sweet. We did get stuck in the snow storm where the army helped us and prepared food for more than 1000 people. They gave us their beds and stood awake taking care of us whole night. the most annoying part was people who did not realise how much our army guys were sacrificing for us and kept demanding stuff and were not ready to adjust for even one night. I would rather have them frozen in minus degree outside.

Yes the people are absolutely lovely – this is so true 🙂

Our experience of visiting West and South Sikkim, Darjeeling Sikkim was our first trip to the Northeast. We went in December and the weather was fine, not very cold. Sikkim is a scenic place with rolling hills, blue mountains and leafy, misty woods. You come across the turquoise blue waters of River Rangit and Teestha (WB) almost everywhere. The people are simple, warm and friendly and instinctively smile at strangers. The Baiguney Club Mahindra resort where we stayed is also a beautiful place, on the right bank of River Rangit beyond which rises a mountain. Sikkim is all mountains and streams and valleys carpeted with wild flowers. Roads are very good and road-widening is going on at some places. The Sidkeong Tulku Bird Park at Gyalshing in West Sikkim district is another lovely place. Set in the most dense forest I have ever seen, it is a half an hour exhilarating walk through silver oaks and other trees that reach for the sky. Sun light hardly falls through the dense canopy. The walk leads to the ruins of ancient capital of Sikkim, Rabdentse, and the fort offers expansive views of the Kanchanjunga range. We visited the 17th century Sangchen Pemayangtse Monastery where ancient scrolls of Buddha’s teachings are kept. Pelling is a quiet holiday station. There is a skywalk which offers beautiful views of mountains. The periphery and outskirts of Darjeeling are very scenic but Darjeeling town is over-rated. The tea gardens are really lovely and refreshing. You can enjoy the views from cable car also. The cable cars are a bit scary but it was safe. Darjeeling hill station is congested and jammed with traffic. There is an army memorial at Darjeeling worth visiting. We took a 30-km drive from Darjeeling to Nepal border town of Pasupathinagar. The route via Ghoom, Sukhia Pokhari, and Simana is very scenic with pine forest slopes on both sides of the road. It is a beautiful and memorable drive. We went into Pasupathinagar inside Nepal which is a tax free zone. Although people claim that the goods are all original but cheap, I found most of the items to be clever duplicates. It is a good place to buy jackets though. There is a little town named Jorthung, 3 kms away from Baiguney. It has a well laid out market centre…good place to buy trinkets and souvenirs. Outside the Biguney Club Mahindra, about 100 metres away on the Nayabazar-Legship-Reshi Road, we discovered a little eating place lovingly named Baiguney’s Rasoi. It is a small joint run by two women, and their home-cooked food was delicious and hygienic. And the food is reasonably priced. You can have sumptuous breakfast of Aloo Parathas, Puri Sabzi or bread omelette there itself on neatly laid out tables with the sun streaming in over the mountain. They prepare vegetarian and non-vegetarian lunch and dinner also if you inform in advance. There are lots of Oyos and other small hotels in Jorthang, Pelling, and Gyalshing. The Geyzing market was interesting with fresh fruits, and the Taatopani hot spring. We spent most of the time in West Sikkim and South Sikkim districts. We will do Gangtok and above next time. If you have a morning flight (between 9 am- 12 noon) from Bagdogra, it would be a good idea to start early from Gangtok, Baiguney or Jorthang as landslides can sometimes block the road. If you have a very early morning flight, better to return to Bagdogra the previous evening. https://sreenivas-janyala.blogspot.com/

I spent 3 years there during my work life. It is a Visual Delight.

Absolutely agree 🙂

Loved the pictures! Some say Sikkim is no less than a piece of heaven. In my opinion if you want to learn about the local lives of Sikkim while enjoying your trip, one of the best places to stay is in a homestay. But it depends on what you want, hotels are also best for many travelers.

Hi Savi and Vid. First things first- Love you both!

Now, I want to ask if it will better to plan a trip like Baghdogra-Pelling-North Sikkim- Gangtok- Baghdogra instead of what you have planned Baghdogra- Gangtok- North Sikkim- Gangtok – Pelling – Baghdogra ? Why did you go to Gangtok twice?

Hey Shruti,

Thanks for the love 🙂

That was because it’s easier to travel from Gangtok to North Sikkim. I believe even if you go from Pelling to North Sikkim, you will have to take a break in Gangtok 🙂

Hope that helps

Sikkim, India’s smallest state surrounded by beautiful snowy mountains and unique culture in the foothills of Kanchenchanga, the world’s third-highest peak, attracts a large number of tourists every year.

Such an in-depth travel guide you have written. I am planning to visit Sikkim in March. Your suggested itinerary will be very useful for sure.

Beautifully written travelogue. Very informative. Thanks a lot dear Sasi.

Can we go to these places in March 2021. Any covid problems for travel?

Yes you can – would suggest getting RT-PCR test before leaving for Sikkim as a lot of airlines & local checkpoints ask for it 🙂

Fabulous article and some great advice.. we’ve got the hotels booked for later this month already and had some of the listed sights on our itinerary and then stumbled upon this blog and still managed to takeaway some v useful inputs so thanks for the comprehensive info. Regarding the RT-PCR test though, is this required or ‘good to have’? The Elgin don’t need it but you mentioned checkpoints so I thought I’d check with you if this is indeed required.

Hey yes that’s right – it is not required but good to have as there can be checkpoints which ask for reports sometimes 🙂

many thanks 🙂

I am planning for my honeymoon to Gangtok in the month of July. Is this a good time to visit? I know it will be monsoon. But me and my wouldbe wife love rainy season. Please suggest your views

Hey Abhishek – yes rain might mean your plans for exploring can get spoilt sometimes, but if you enjoy monsoon, then you would enjoy it 🙂

Such a well-crafted post capturing the picturesque beauty of Gangtok. However, to fully enjoy the magnificence of such a place, luxury rooms are a necessity for a comfortable stay. Look no further, stay at RoseDell Inn. It is a myth that comfort requires spending a fortune. RoseDell inn is a burning example of it. It has wooden furnished rooms with room service that offers food that captivates your senses already enthralled by the beauty of the mountains. All of these while relishing the exotic food our resort has to offer. Blame it on our traditional cooks if you must. Enjoy the majestic mountains from the comfort of our resort. Are you planning a trip to Sikkim soon? If yes, then you cannot miss out on visiting these best places to visit in Sikkim!

Sikkim is a gorgeous place to visit in North East and offers a vibrant and unique landscape. It is the second smallest state in India, but this doesn’t dim the beauty and charm that exudes out of every corner of this wonderful state.

From magical lakes to breathtaking mountain peaks, you will find all sorts of amazing places to visit here.

That’s not all, the people here are quite lovely too and will make you fall in love with this place. So, whether you are a mountain lover or a nature enthusiast, Sikkim is the perfect destination for all kinds of travelers.

If you are confused about where all you can go in Sikkim, then check out this list of the 15 best places to visit in Sikkim.

Gangtok, North Sikkim

Gangtok, Sikkim’s capital and one of the best places to visit in Sikkim is one of India’s cleanest hill stations.

It is a well-known center for Tibetan Buddhists and the starting point for getting permits to hike and trek to other Sikkim locations.

But that’s not all: Gangtok’s mall road is a popular shopping destination. It is also one of the most popular tourist attractions in Sikkim because, at night, the entire street is illuminated with golden lights.

You will likewise find authentic Sikkimese food here which makes it such a pleasant visit. In addition, you can get to the well-known Tsomgo Lake, the Nathula Pass, and the northern Sikkim region from this location.

Lingdum Monastery (Ranka Monastery)

Lingdum Monastery, one of the best places to visit near Gangtok, is rarely visited because few people are aware of it or care about it.

Additionally, because it is not included in the standard sightseeing packages, the taxi drivers won’t tell you about this monastery when you hire a private taxi.

But if you’ve always been interested in monks’ lives and want to learn more about Buddhist culture, you should definitely plan a trip here.

At this monastery, you can take in the views of the mountains and enjoy the prayer chants that are always playing.

Ban Jhakri Falls

Another of the top places to visit in Sikkim, particularly in Gangtok is the Ban Jhankri Falls which is situated inside Ban Jhakri Park.

Relax and take in yet another gorgeous fall in Sikkim at this ideal location. Despite not being in the same natural setting as the Kanchenjunga waterfalls, the waterfall is still breathtakingly beautiful.

You can also dress up as a Sikkimese at a few nearby food and souvenir stands. For just 100 INR, you can even have your pictures taken in traditional attire.

Tip Top Viewpoint

Last, but not least, you need to visit the Tip Top Viewpoint, also popularly known as the Tashi Viewpoint.

This is one of the best places to visit in Sikkim as you get to observe the various surrounding mountains. And although it is freezing cold at this point, a good hot cup of coffee can do wonders while you enjoy an amazing view that complements it.

Where to Stay in Gangtok

Since Gangtok is one of the top places to visit in Sikkim, you will find several accommodation options here.

Here are a few options for different budget ranges:

  • For a budget-friendly stay, I would recommend staying in  Tagalong Backpackers  (for backpackers and solo travelers) and  Muscatel Bellevue .
  • For mid-range stays, you can check out  Bamboo Retreat ,  Netuk House , and  Enchanted Forest Farmstay .
  • For a luxury stay, you can consider  Mayfair Spa Resort & Casino ,  Sikkim Villa Tosca – A Boutique Aparthotel , and  The Elgin Norkhill – Resort and Spa .

Rumtek Monastery, North Sikkim

Located at a distance of 22 km from Gangtok is the Rumtek Monastery which is also one of the best places to visit in Sikkim.

At an elevation of approximately 5000ft, this monastery is the largest and most important Buddhist monastery in Sikkim. The monastery houses thousands of witness monks who enjoy a normal lifestyle here and study more about Buddhist rituals and cultures.

With beautiful architecture and colors, this monastery will leave you speechless but that is nothing compared to the view offered from the top of the monastery.

From the terrace, you can enjoy a gorgeous view of Gangtok City and fall in love with it.

Dzongu, North Sikkim

Occupied by the Lepcha people group, Dzongu Valley is another of the most astonishing spots to visit in Sikkim as it offers the most stunning views of the Kanchenjunga mountain.

Dzongu is a lush, serene, and beautiful location that is bounded in the southeast by the Teesta River and in the northeast by the Tholung Chu River.

The majority of the houses here are made of wood, and their specialty is handwoven clothing, cane, and bamboo products. There is a lot of vegetation here.

Dzongu has a dreamlike setting because it is covered in a thick canopy of jungles.

When you visit, you can hear the chirping of the birds and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. This valley is about 20 to 25 kilometers from Mangan, and a permit is required.

One of the best places to visit in Sikkim for stunning views and quiet time is this offbeat location, which has very few tourists.

Lachung, North Sikkim

Lachung is a charming little village in the north of Sikkim, close to the border with Tibet.

It is one of the most magical places to visit in Sikkim. Lachung, which is home to the Lachung monastery that was built in the 19th century, is a magical location that will make your Sikkim trip one to remember.

Although snowfall does not occur frequently in this area, it does occasionally occur, and when it does, the locations end up covered in a thick layer of snow, giving the impression of a magical Christmas Eve!

Lachung is surrounded by apple orchards and has rows of wooden houses and pine trees lining its narrow lanes.

It also serves as the starting point for the Yumthang Valley, where you can find several rhododendron species. Additionally, this valley’s hot springs, waterfalls, and pine forests draw a lot of visitors.

Where to Stay in Lachung

If you are taking a package, then you don’t need to find separate accommodation in Lachung.

Here are a few options to consider:

  • For a budget-friendly stay, you can check out OurGuest Bichu Homestay and Hotel Green Tara.
  • For a mid-range stay, you can consider OurGuest Lachung Homestay, Summit Alpine Resort, and Summit Khangri Karpo Retreat and Spa.

snow covered town best places to visit in sikkim

Yumthang Valley, North Sikkim

Yumthang Valley, also known as Sikkim’s “Valley of Flowers,” is at an elevation of 3,564 meters.

It is one of the best places to visit in Sikkim, the valley is filled with natural hot springs and meadows. Throughout the late spring months, you can observe the blossoming of a few assortments of blossoms, turning this spot very beautiful.

The Himalayan mountains surround this valley, which gets a lot of snow every year.

Additionally, the valley’s proximity to the well-known Teesta River lends it a dreamlike and magical quality. We had such a strong desire to visit this location, but it was closed when we were there.

So, if you get the chance, don’t miss out on visiting this beautiful location.

Where to Stay in Yumthang Valley

There are no hotels or homestays in Yumthang. Visitors need to stay in Lachung and make a day trip to Yumthang Valley and Zero Point.

Lachen, North Sikkim

If you want to spend some time at the Gurudongmar lake, Lachen is one of the best places to visit in Sikkim.

Lachen, which translates to “Big Pass,” is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Sikkim and is also promoted by the government. This town requires a permit, but it is well worth it.

You can visit Gurudongmar Lake as well as Kanchenjunga National Park, trek to the valleys and hills nearby, visit monasteries, see wildlife, and more from this location. Because of this, it is one of Sikkim’s best tourist spots.

Where to Stay in Lachen

  • For budget-friendly accommodations, you can check out Hotel Eco Nest and Delight Lachen Heritage.
  • For mid-range accommodations, you can check out Delight The Fortuna Lachen, OurGuest Dhatup Homestay, and Rufina Blue Pine.
  • For a luxury stay, you can check out Summit Panghen Metok Hotel.

Gurudongmar Lake, North Sikkim

Gurudongmar Lake, at 17,800 feet, is one of the world’s highest lakes and one of the most beautiful places to visit in Sikkim.

This Sikkim holy lake is quite mystical and must be visited due to the numerous legends that surround it.

During the winter, this lake freezes, and you’ll find a lot of Yaks, blue sheep, and other animals there, circulating the lake at that point.

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to visit Gurudongmar Lake. I can assure you that this location will undoubtedly be the trip’s highlight.

Tragically, the lake was shut during our time in any case, but we will surely return to visit this mysterious lake soon.

Where to Stay near Gurudongmar Lake

There are no hotels or homestays close to Gurudongmar Lake. You have to stay in Lachen and then plan a day trip to Gurudongmar Lake.

Katao, North Sikkim

One of the offbeat places to visit in Sikkim while exploring Northern Sikkim, Katao is a small village that is located around 24 km from Lachung. This is one of the least visited places in Sikkim but should definitely be on your list if you love snow and quiet surrounding.

Usually, this place is covered with a thick layer of ice which makes it difficult to reach the actual village and only army vehicles will be able to cross these snow-laden roads. However, the journey itself is wonderful and everyone should experience it once.

You can go to this place by just paying 200-250 INR more to your driver who is taking you on the North Sikkim package. Just ask him to make a few hours’ stop at this beautiful village. Trust me, it will be the best 200 INR you have ever spent.

Where to Stay in Katao

Since Katao is one of the least known places to visit in Sikkim, there are no hotels or homestays available to book online. So, your best option would be to book a stay in Lachung or look for a local stay after reaching Katao.

Ravangala, South Sikkim

Ravangla, another of Sikkim’s awe-inspiring destinations, will undoubtedly take your breath away.

Ravangala, in South Sikkim, is best known for its Buddha Park, where you can walk among the Tibetan flags, huge prayer wheels, and green trees while the statue stands head and shoulders above everything else.

You will find a prayer room where you can sit and meditate for a while beneath the statue.

  • For a mid-range stay, you can check out Vamoosetrail Soshing and Tinkitam Farms.

Namchi, South Sikkim

Namchi, a popular pilgrimage center for Buddhists, is one of the top places to visit in Sikkim.

In the native Tibetan language, Namchi means ‘Top of the Sky’ and when you visit this place, that is exactly what you will feel.

Here, you will come across a tea garden named Temi Tea, which stretches across a large distance and makes this city look extremely magical and surreal.

If you just want to get lost in the natural beauty then this is one of the best places to visit in Sikkim. And, you can enjoy a cup of chai from one of the many roadside vendors along with the scenic views.

Apart from that, you can attain peace by visiting the Char Dham and the Shirdi Sai Baba Mandir.

Shirdi Splashed with golden color from the outside, Shirdi Sai Baba Mandir looks immensely beautiful amidst all the green and you can meditate in the prayer room.

Similarly, Namchi’s Char Dham looks quite amazing with its huge Lord Shiva statue. There is also a café inside Char Dham where you can sit and enjoy spending some time here.

Zuluk, East Sikkim

Zuluk, a small village in Sikkim, is situated at a height of approximately 10,000ft. and is one of the offbeat places to visit in Sikkim that will make anyone fall in love with it.

This is one of the top places to visit near Gangtok and is famous for the Silk Route. The village offers a great vantage point to view the mighty Kanchenjunga mountain.

Apart from looking magical, Zuluk is also one of the best places to visit in Sikkim for all adventure lovers. Crossing over 32 hairpin bends to reach this village is no easy feat but the result is worth it. You would need a permit to visit Zuluk.

Where to Stay in Zuluk:

Zuluk is an offbeat destination and due to low internet connectivity, there are not a lot of online options available. However, there are several homestays available once you reach this village.

This remote valley has a meandering stream that crosses it and is one of the remotest habitations in the Himalayas.

When you visit this place, you can explore the meadows around it and make the most of your time here.

Where to Stay in Gnathang

Gnathang is one of the least popular places to visit in Sikkim so there are no hotels or homestays available to book online. Stay in Zuluk or look for offline stay options after reaching Gnathang.

green landscape with a village best places to visit in sikkim

Tsomgo Lake, East Sikkim

One of the most enchanting and ethereal Sikkim Tourist Places to visit, Tsomgo Lake or Changu Lake looks even more magnificent when covered in snow.

Situated at a height of 12,400ft., this is one of the highest lakes in India and is one of the top places to visit near Gangtok. The snow covers this amazing place for at least 9 months a year and offers a classic magical setting to the place.

What’s even more interesting is that during the summers, the lake water turns the shade of turquoise and beautifully reflects the sky and the nearby peaks. During snowy months, you can enjoy playing in the snow and have the time of your life here.

Nathula Pass, East Sikkim

Another one of the top places to visit in Sikkim, Nathula Pass gives you a chance to touch the border between China and India, an opportunity quite scarce.

So, you will see Chinese soldiers at one end of the border and Indian soldiers on the other, guarding their own land. And sometimes (if you are lucky) you’ll witness them talking to each other.

In historic times, Nathula Pass was a part of the ‘Silk Road’ and it is also one of the highest motorable passes in the world.

While this pass is open to Indians, you will need a permit to enter this area. Also, foreigners aren’t allowed to enter the Nathula Pass.

Pelling, West Sikkim

If you are a true Himalaya lover, then Pelling would undoubtedly be for you one of the best places to visit in Sikkim.

Offering the most gorgeous views of the Himalayas and the Kanchenjunga, Pelling resembles a fairytale land and is one of the hardest places to leave in this state.

Pelling is a truly beautiful city in Sikkim with its historical palace, ruins, and hidden waterfalls. It offers you many magnificent places to visit which include the Kanchenjunga waterfalls, Wishing Lake, Sing Song bridge, Rabidentse’s ruins, Helipad area, and so on.

Kanchenjunga Waterfalls

Make sure that you check out the Kanchenjunga Waterfalls, one of the most beautiful waterfalls I have ever seen in India. Do you know what is the best part of this waterfall?

It is not visible from the main road. Yes, that’s right! You have to make your way a little inside the mountain to actually come across the waterfall and this is one of the reasons why this is one of the best places to visit in Sikkim.

You can easily spend a few hours sitting beside this waterfall and can eat or drink at the nearby stalls.

Experience Community Tourism in Sikkim – An Unconventional 10 day Travel Itinerary

Experience Community Tourism in Sikkim – An Unconventional 10 day Travel Itinerary

Sikkim, a tiny state tucked in the North Eastern region of the country has gained popularity among travellers over the past decade. Snow capped peaks, icy lakes, rhododendron sanctuaries, tea estates and rich biodiversity, the reasons to visit Sikkim are plenty. If you are someone who loves mountains, there are high chances that you have already visited Sikkim. But what’s surprising is, most of the travellers tend to follow a generic Sikkim Travel Itinerary (unlike this one ?) and head to the conventional and touristy destinations in Sikkim, ultimately missing out on the authentic experiences.

I believe that a place is all about its people. The best way to know about a place, its history and culture is by interacting with the original inhabitants. It is the locals who will be able to tell you about hidden gems which you otherwise would have never been able to discover. The concept of community tourism has evolved in Sikkim on the same note. Community tourism allows you to live with the local community, explore the untrodden paths and experience their lifestyle.

There are several villages in Sikkim that have been modeled on community tourism principles with aid from the government. Locals in these villages have transformed their homes into home-stays to host guests from all over the globe. There are several culinary, adventure and cultural experiences that are hosted in these villages which you can be a part of. Various festivals are held as a part of community tourism initiative to boost the economy. And these festivals are nowhere close to what we experience in cities. Go ahead to read about some of the places you can visit to make your trip to Sikkim an unconventional one.

Here is a 10-day detailed Sikkim Travel itinerary covering East, West and South Sikkim which you can follow, along with details on how to plan your trip to Sikkim. This Sikkim itinerary covers quaint villages and dreamy locations, away from all the tourist hotspots, perfect for discerning travellers or for ones who have already visited Sikkim once and are expecting to see the other side of the state.

You can spend the rest of the day at your homestay and interact with your hosts, followed by dinner or explore the orchards and farms in your homestay.

This is your first day, in this 10 Day Sikkim Itinerary, when you get some time without having to worry about ‘what to see next.’ The village stay itself is an experience. Start the day with a healthy breakfast at your homestay and head out to explore the village on foot.

Take a tour of the lush green paddy fields in Yangang and spend a quiet day in the monasteries with your hosts. You can ask your host to arrange for a vehicle to drive you till Mangzing Waterfall, a hidden spot in the village where no tourist goes.

You can request your hosts to give you a guided walk through their farm lands in the evening after which you can spend the evening in the outdoor area of the homestay. You could join the hosts to prepare dinner and learn more about local cuisines.

Day 4 : Yangang to Kewzing

On your fourth day, prepare to head to Kewzing after breakfast in Yangang.

  • Shared vehicles are not available on this route. So you’d have to hire a vehicle till Kewzing. Best option is to inform the hosts beforehand so that they can arrange a cab to pick you up from the homestay.

sikkim travel reddit

It will take 2 hours at the most to reach Kewzing from Yangang. After a sumptuous lunch at your homestay, explore the village. Start with Kewzing Monastery right in the middle of the village where young monks would be ready to greet you and take you around the monastery. Walk further to the cardamom plantations and tea gardens. If you have time in the evening, head towards Bon Monastery in Kewzing to have a look at the preserved scriptures and religious texts.

Return to the homestay by evening and spend time with the hosts by the fireplace. You could request the hosts to arrange for a momo making session. Savour on some delicious momos for dinner as you also learn to make them in the most traditional way.

Wake up to the beautiful views of Mt. Narsing and Mt. Pandim and set out to explore the hamlet.

sikkim travel reddit

Opt for a bird watching tour or a guided hike in the forest trails in and around the village. If you are comfortable for a long walk, head to Doling Monastery and Seven Mirror Lake on foot or hop onto a cab to reach this place. Doling Monastery is not frequented with tourists at all. You may find a couple of locals who visit the monastery to offer prayers. The mystic vibe at the Lake is something that cannot be described with words. An array of prayer flags reflects on the water of the lake to make the scene gorgeous.

Return back to your homestay in the evening and enjoy a bonfire session with the hosts.

Day 6 : Kewzing to Khecheopalri Lake

Start early on Day 6 of this 10 Day Sikkim Itinerary, from Kewzing to head towards Khecheopalri Lake. You’d be crossing Pelling, a rather famous stop in Sikkim. Stop over at Pemayangtse Monastery and Rhabdentse Ruins in Pelling while heading towards Kecheopalri Lake.

Most of the travelers visit Kecheopalri Lake on a day’s tour from Pelling. But not many people know that this place is a treasure for nature lovers. Apart from the famous Kecheopalri Lake, there are several waterfalls, natural pools and hikes that you can visit from here. A visit to Khecheopalri Lake would be the highlight of your unconventional trip to this North Eastern State.

sikkim travel reddit

From Kewzing, you do not hav many options to reach Khecheopalri Lake. Either ask your host to arrange a cab for you which can directly reach you to Khecheopalri Lake or book a cab till Pelling. Visit Pemayangtse Monastery and Rhabdentse Ruins in Pelling and reserve another can till Khecheopalri Lake.

For both the options, either a direct cab or two, the expense would go upto around INR 3000, if not more.

Kecheopalri Sanctuary Homestay (Contact Mr Latup at 8145702994)

Reach your homestay by noon and relax by the lake. Spend a leisurely hour soaking in all the calmness and energy. Later, return to your homestay to enjoy your dinner by the bonfire.

Wake up early to watch the first light of the day over the lake. Make sure you stay in a room facing the lake. Just waking up in the morning would be such a fulfilling activity, that will surely become one of the highlights of this 10 Day Sikkim Trip, and something that you will remember for the rest of your life.

After breakfast, ask your host to guide you or arrange a guide to lead you through the forest trails. There is a short and beautiful trail that leads to a gorgeous natural pool. Nothing would beat the idea of taking a dip in the cool waters of the natural lake. The freshness of the water is sure to wipe off all your worries.

Explore the forest with your guide and learn about the unique flora and fauna of this part of Sikkim. Return to your homestay by early evening to enjoy some wood-fired pizza and indulge in a jamming session or conversations with the fellow travellers.

Day 8: Kecheopalri Lake to Yuksom

If you want to encounter Sikkim’s unknown history, Yuksom is the place you should be in. Yuksom is one of the 10 Hidden Gems of Sikkim , which is also the gateway to Kanchendzonga National Park ( One of the Best National Parks in India ) and happens to be the base for famous Himalayan treks like the Goecha La Trek and Dzongri Trek. The age old monasteries and  the enchanting lakes will leave a trail in your heart.

sikkim travel reddit

The chances of finding a shared cab are quite low. But depending on the season and plans of other guests in your vicinity, you may find one for yourself and share the cab. Ask your host beforehand on this so that arrangement can be made easily.

Or ask your host to get you in touch with a driver who can drop you at Yuksom. It’s a 1.5 hours of drive and expect to spend around INR 1800-2000 for a drop off.

Yak Homestay | Lobding Homestay

Reach Yuksom by 12pm and spend the day to explore Norbu Gang, the Coronation throne of Namgyal Dynasty, Kathok monastery and Kathok Lake. Watch the fluttering white prayer flags around the lake, a sight that is sure to touch your soul and instill a sense of gratitude within you.

Do not miss out on dropping in at Dubdi Monastery. Established in 1701 during the reign of Chogyal Namgyal, it is considered to be the oldest monastery in Sikkim.

On your 9 th day of your trip to Sikkim, there are two options you can opt for. First is to head back to Gangtok if you’re flying out from Pakyong.

In this case, you have to follow the following route.

  • Take a shared cab from Yuksom to Geyzing.
  • From Geyzing, take a shared cab till Gangtok.
  • There are not many vehicles in Yuksom so the best idea is to reach Geyzing in the available mode of transport and choose the comfortable option for the longer segment of the journey, i.e. Geyzing to Gangtok.

If your flight is scheduled from Bagdogra, you can head to Siliguri directly from Yuksom. Please note that Siliguri is the nearest city, about 10 kms from Bagdogra. Bagdogra is a small town in the outskirts where the airport is located.

If you are opting for a shared cab, follow this route to reach Siliguri:

Yuksom – Geyzing – Jorethang – Siliguri

If you get a direct cab from Yuksom to Jorethang, then you’d only have to change your vehicle one. If not, then twice, at Geyzing and Jorethang.

In case you want to book a vehicle entirely for yourself, you should come to Geyzing and then reserve a vehicle for Siliguri.

Stay over in Siliguri for the night before you fly out the next day.

Recommendation for stay in Siliguri  :  Mulaqat BnB

On the 10 th and last day of your trip, fly out from Pakyong or Bagdogra.

Or you can even start your 7 Day Road Trip to Bhutan starting from Bagdogra.

10 Day Sikkim Travel Itinerary – Summary

Day 3: Explore Yangang

Day 6 : Kewzing to Kecheopalri

Day 7 : Local Hikes

  • As this itinerary consists of places located in remote parts of Sikkim, there are not many options to opt for shared vehicles. The cost of the trip gets high for a solo or budget traveler as you’d need to reserve an entire vehicle on most of the days. Plan the trip in groups of 4 or 6 to cut down on your expenses by splitting the costs.
  • Your stay in all the places would be in home-stays run by local families. Do not expect luxury as they have limited resources to operate. You can expect a lot of love and warmth though, making your trip a truly unconventional one.
  • All the recommendations for accommodation made are of home-stays, which I believe is where you will experience an outstanding hospitality and learn about Sikkim. If you wish to put up in hotels during your stay in Gangtok, check this one stop travel guide for Sikkim .
  • Keep your luggage as light as possible as you might need to walk with your luggage at times to reach the homestay.
  • This Sikkim Travel Itinerary makes for a great road trip for bikers. North East being the hub of adventure activities, there are many bike rentals in Gangtok. The Bikers Hub is one of the best Bike rentals from where you can rent a bike and set out to explore the beauty of Sikkim.
  • The best time to visit Sikkim is March-April and October-November. The weather during these months is pleasant and the views of the snow capped mountain peaks are clear.

This itinerary covers East, West and South Sikkim. The only region that is left untouched and deserves a separate attention is North Sikkim. Check this North Sikkim travel guide to plan a trip to the land of high altitude lake and valley of flowers.

If you have not started traveling to the North East India yet, maybe this is the time to begin!

Hello, Looking for an itinerary to visit some of the offbeat places in Sikkim for a family of 4 with 7N/8D trip. Please consider Siliguri as the pick-up and drop point. If we can stay 2 nights each at three locations and 1 night at the 4th location that would be great. Being with nature in homestays and visit some of the amazing natural habitats than commercial places crowded with tourists is something our priorities are. Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for recommending this. My next plan is to travel to this place

Thanks for the options. Sikkim is one location in the north east that has been pending for quite a long period for me. But I’m still hopeful to be there soon. Thanks for this detailed guide.

This is quite an exceptional and amazing itinerary for people to explore Sikkim. Love the way you have explained

Sikkim is absolutely stunning. Your detailed guide is so helpful and full of interesting tips. I would love to refer to it while planning my trip 🙂

It is good to see that you have given an offbeat itinerary of Sikkim and not the usual ones. This part of Sikkim is so beautiful, especially Kewzing. And Yuksom is also such a significant place in terms of history and heritage of Sikkim. Glad that you included these places. I would also recommend to visit Tashiding near Yuksom.

I have Sikkim on my bucket list. It’s the onky state which is beautiful and peaceful in India. This itinerary is a good guide on making my plans.

Wow what a beautiful part of India. I have never been to Sikkim till date and I so wish to go there. This 10 days itinerary seems perfect for seeing the pretty and hidden places. I will bookmark this post for future reference.

I have been to Gangtok twice, it’s a must-visit place. I am planning my third trip soon. You have written the details of how to plan 10 days travel to Sikkim in a very nice way. As it is nearby my city so in the coming months I am visiting Sikkim for a vacation with my friends. I will ping you if I will need any details regarding the place https://parilifestyle.com/

You have uncovered some of the beautiful gems of Sikkim in this itinerary. It seems to be a great way to experience the natural beauty of Sikkim. Reading the post brought back our own memories of Sikkim. We really loved the enchanting lake of Kecheopalri.

Thank you for this literal revisit to Sikkim. Reading your post, I want to visit again!

The itinerary spread over ten days seems so much better than rushed ones done in fewer days. You actually can explore and enjoy so much more about the region, ita culture, people, places and food. Your post took me traveling along with you.

That was such a detailed analysis of the places to visit in Sikkim. It was like a virtual tour for me.

Thank you so much. I hope you enjoyed going through the article.

The Shooting Star

Sikkim Travel Blog: Exploring the Lost Kingdom.

Sikkim blogs, west Sikkim, Sikkim himalayas

In this Sikkim travel blog, come with me virtually on a Sikkim trip to discover the secret treasures of the last kingdom to be annexed to India in 1975.

Sikkim travel blog

On a late evening, we sat on a steep cliff, drinking the local Sikkimese Beer. Sparse villages and farms lay scattered in the valley below. The River Teesta roared along intensely. The mountains echoed with hypnotic chants from a nearby monastery. We were lost in our thoughts, when the mist slowly rose, and revealed to us in all its snow-capped glory, the mighty Mount Kanchendzonga!

Sikkim India, truly off the beaten path

Places like these can’t be found on a Sikkim travel map. Trying to find my footing down a path of lose pebbles, I had asked two school kids where the narrow, winding path would take us. They enthusiastically decided to lead the way in a direction where the coarse mountain paths turned into a bed of flowers, with bright red rhododendrons blooming along the slopes.

The path culminated in a cliff, from where we would get the first glimpse in two weeks of our Sikkim travel itinerary, of the spectacular snow-clad Himalayas!

Sikkim natural beauty, like no other

We spent our days in West Sikkim hiking to remote monasteries and villages, marveling at the isolation in which Sikkim people choose to live and pray in these parts.

In most mountain regions in India, village homes are clustered together and their farms further away. But locals in Sikkim build spacious homes surrounded by fields, often a 10-15 minute walk from the nearest neighbor.

Sikkim culture and fulfilment

For the most part, we let the chants of  Om mani padme hum  and the fluttering Tibetan prayer flags guide us. But one afternoon, we trudged up a particularly steep forest path with a local Sikkim guide. Trekked for an hour across the mountain, to reach a private monastery built by a Lepcha family in the solitude of the Himalayas.

Unlike many temples, there were no donation boxes or information about the founders, who had spent years carrying each stone up the tiring paths. And it is people with the same conviction, who aren’t looking for anything but peace, that perhaps feel fulfilled here.

Shared taxis for a real Sikkim adventure

Sikkim road journeys often took us on steep, narrow, mucky and broken roads.

On a treacherous journey up to Dzongu in North Sikkim, our taxi taxi threatened to roll back down a slope multiple times and we hurriedly joined the locals in taking turns to push it up.

Shared taxis are the fabric of life in Sikkim (the most used Sikkim transport), where no public buses ply the rough mountain roads. There are no timetables or location routes. Yet everything from people to documents to bottles of fresh brews efficiently get transported from one end of Sikkim state to another.

Local encounters on the Sikkim Darjeeling trip

It was in a shared taxi ride to Mangan that we met Joon, a civil engineer who went out of his way to help us get permits for Dzongu at the district magistrate’s office on election day. He introduced us as old friends to the officer in charge, and helped us secure documents to hasten the process.

In the village of Dzongu, we met the Lepcha people, who have passionately protested the damming of the Teesta River. To them, the elements of nature – the river, the mountains, the forests – are sacred.

Our host family even chided me for asking if the vegetables they grow are organic, because there should be no such thing as ‘organic Sikkim’. That is the only way of farming they’ve known. Much before the world gave food without chemicals a fancy name.

Sikkim: State of India, forgotten kingdom

On our way out of the state, I observed in fascination, the point where the Rangeet River from Darjeeling joins the mighty Teesta. Each charts a different journey through the mountains. Yet at one point, the Rangeet flows into the Teesta, and the colors of its waters, the intensity of its flow, and its humble origins are quickly forgotten.

And so it is with Sikkim, the lost kingdom. The last state to be annexed to India in 1975.

You should have tried North Sikkim as well especially Yumthang Valley/Lachung. I rate it above other parts, road from Gangtok is not great though. 🙂

No roads are great in these parts 😉 I wanted to go north, but was told I’ll have to take a package and all that and go. Not a fan of doing that.

Phew! I’m just out of Sikkim after traveling there for two weeks. Loved your take on it – since my memories are still fresh, I was nodding in agreement to whatever you wrote. 🙂 All I can say at the moment is that Sikkim is an experience.

It sure is! Waiting to read all about your trip 🙂

I so want to visit Sikim after this post… India is filled up with such beautiful places.. 🙂

Agreed Nakul! Hope you get to visit soon. They say october-november are some of the best months!

Lake Gurudonmar was gorgeous in Sikkim ! It is something definitely worth seeing, if you haven’t already 🙂

I didn’t see it. But heard you have to take a package et al to go there. Did you manage to go on your own?

Yes, afaik, you have to take a package. We (4 ppl) took one from Gantok. I remember it was a little pricy, but was worth it 🙂

Great coverage, lucid writing & thank you for sharing. We believe that there is more to India than what meets eye. You have tabled one such beautiful place. ‘dod’ Rangers

Thanks! And it’s true, there’s so much more to India than we’ll discover in this lifetime.

I so want to visit Sikkim after reading this. East India and north-eastern India are next onmy bucket list

That’s awesome Deepika! Go soon 🙂

wow nice…

Brilliantly crafted…lost in Sikkim for some time…thanks for posting

Thanks Sunil! I’m glad you could experience the place for a bit. In person next 🙂

The best way to understand Sikkim is to travel in shared jeeps. You get to meet local people of Sikkim and observe their daily lives. On one occasion while travelling from Pelling to Darjeeling, I had to change shared jeep in a smaller town (I forgot the name 🙁 ). It was around 1 PM in afternoon and there were no jeeps available at stand. When I inquired at the counter they said if we get enough people then there will be one more jeep available. When I asked what if not enough people are, then the reply I got was : “Then you stay in the town for a day :)”.

Gotta love how patient and laid back people are in these parts! And I agree, shared jeeps are the best way to meet locals.

Loved your description of the experience in Sikkim. It reminded me of my journey in Sikkim last year. Feeling nostalgic. Will need to visit Darjeeling and Sikkim again soon. Thanks for sharing your memories and experiences.

I want to go back too! Hope it’s soon for both of us 🙂

Lovely post… makes me want to go to Sikkim now. Life in villages is simple yet hard, and you find some of the most fulfilled people there.

Agreed. And that’s the beauty of India’s villages. Hope you get to experience Sikkim soon!

Sikkim is gorgeous and just perfect for these hot summer days 🙂

It is! Though I hear June-August are months of heavy rain (and leeches), so a good idea to wait till September.

I have been to this place; in fact Sikkim both north/ west and to Ladakh. It was one among the most peaceful trip of my life! Blissful…It seems like God must be residing around with all his charm and blessings. Wonderful place it is 🙂

I can imagine it must have been. Can’t get enough of these mountains!

I always wonder at the ‘we’ that often figures on your solo trips. 🙂

Wasn’t travelling alone on this trip. Think you may have missed out a post on this blog that explains :p

Good read. Inspiring, certainly since I haven’t explored much of India

Another stunning location…if I get to India any time soon it’s gong to have to be the Himalayan regions.

Hey! Been a silent admirer for long ! :)) North Sikkim happened last year in a private taxi (i.e. white number plate one) no hassles with the package tour, i cant travel in a preordained way ! 3300/- INR per day for the taxi (Xylo). I arranged for the permits with the taxi fellow @ Rs. 100/- per person. We just have to be persistent enough, stayed at the super Forest Rest House in Lachung/Lachen (cant remember). The package thing is a sham to deprive real travelers like you from exploring and blogging ! You are living the life i ve dreamt of 😀 Keep Traveling n stay blessed

Nice blog regarding sikkim & beautiful views….!!!

@Shivya, was just imagining when I would get such a lovely opportunity. Sipping on beer and travelling lovely scenic locations truly appears like a dream to me. I hope to visit Sikkim in my next vacation. Will surely carry my camera along.

Just stumbled upon this blog and really liked it …and kudos to you for living your dream . Wonder what your experience is traveling as a single woman in India ?

Sikkim is on the cards for November. This article helps me a lot! 🙂

My gangtok trip is best till date, been to yungthamvalley, lachung and katau though could not make up to gurdogmar.the serene beauty is still fresh in my heart,

Every time I feel a little lost in my own quest I come to your blog to read some of your stories and I want you to know it helps 🙂

Thanks awesome woman! More power to you 😊

Well…..I love what you are doing…Following your heart and living the moment….For there’s nothing as like the joy of travelling…The moment of self-introspection and loving the silence within… Feeling that learning comes through experiences of life…

About Sikkim… I was there last year during September, it was a random plan for me, after attending my friend’s wedding.I was travelling solo and that was a blessing for me. I reached Silliguri via a bus and then had the option of going to either darjeeling, duars or gangtok.I decided to chose the place depending on whichever jeep i get first, and i heard someone shouting “Gangtok”…!!!!

I tell you the best thing about Sikkim is the people living in there. People who are doing small jobs still have a smile on their face for they are very much happy living with each other, people who believe that to be happy you dont have to seek after big things, rather happiness is found in small things in life, that happen to be in plenty. People of sikkim who welcome travellers like us with open hearts…people who believe like us that everyday is a Journey and Journey itself is Home…

I wish to meet you in person for I admire what you are doing…. All the best for your Journey ahead… Bon Voyage… 🙂

Hamlets of West Sikkim are a treat for mountain lovers. I can still feel the fresh air and majestic view of snowpeaks from Borong village where I got happily lost while having a solo walk on the hill trails.

I started off from Sikkim only and you are an inspiration to travelers all around the world. I found the place to be enchanted right out of some fairy tales.

I first visited sikkim in 2012 and places i visit was Sikkim, Peling Lachung, second time i visit Sikkim on 2018 for Llingtham, Zuluk, Nathang( kwnows as old silk route). Now again i am planning to visit Sikkim, it always wonders me with something new.

Your blog is just forcing me to make my plan for Sikkim very soon, Thanks

Best Itinerary for North Sikkim – How to Plan your Trip

Are you planning to visit North Sikkim in the near future? Have you been wondering how to plan your journey and make the best out of your time and money? In this post, I will share the best itinerary for North Sikkim and hopefully, after reading this post, you will have an answer to your questions. If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask in the comments section towards the bottom of this page.

North Sikkim is nothing but the northern part of the northeastern state of Sikkim. This is often called as ‘A Trip to Gurudongmar’, although this is not only about Gurudongmar. Since Gurudongmar is more remarkable among all of the places in North Sikkim, probably people like to call it so. It is among the highest lakes in the world and definitely the most beautiful ones.

The start and end point for this trip will be Siliguri, a town in West Bengal. You can reach Siliguri via flight (Flight to Bagdogra airport) or Train (Train to New Jalpaiguri Jn. or Siliguri Jn) or else own vehicle (motorcycle/ car). Here are some best plans for your trip.

best itinerary for north sikkim

Quick Navigation

Best Itinerary for North Sikkim

I will suggest itineraries for 4, 5, and 6 days. This is the minimum time that you will need for a trip here. If you had more days in hand, you can prolong your stay at any of the mentioned places.

North Sikkim Itinerary for 6 Days

If you are not in a hurry or not worried about taking leaves from your daily hectic lives then this plan is for you. You can explore the region entirely and feel the real beauty of this harsh yet romantic part of Sikkim. A trip here can really help you rejuvenate yourself and get some calm and peace for a few days.

It is among the most serene places in all of India with nature’s freshness at its best. Spending a few days in the lap of Mother Nature in North Sikkim will surely help you prepare to better deal with the stress of our day to day lives.

Day 1: Siliguri to Gangtok

One fine morning, you will start your journey towards Gangtok from Siliguri. The trip will be around 4 hours and 125 kilometers long. You will enjoy the journey from the plains of Bengal to the mountains of Sikkim once you cross the Sevoke road.

Upon reaching Gangtok, check into a hotel, freshen up, and have your lunch. There are plenty of eateries offering all kinds of food at MG marg. Enjoy a romantic walk and photo-session at MG Road in the evening. You can also buy some Sikkim special mementos or gift items here.

Day 2: Gangtok to Lachen

Congratulation. This will be your first morning in the mountains on this trip. Get ready to spend some amazing time for the next few days.

Today’s destination will be Lachen, a small hamlet by Lachen Chu (Chu means Mountain River in local language). It is located at a distance of 110 kilometers from Gangtok.

10 kilometers before reaching Mangan, the treacherous road will start and this is where you will have to be a little careful. The entire journey will take around 4 hours 15 minutes. You can enjoy the continuous roar of Lachen Chu in the silence of nature.

You can also visit the beautiful Lachen Monastery on the same afternoon.

Day 3: Chopta Valley viewpoint, Gurudongmar Lake and Kalapatthar

After having a warm sleep under a comfortable blanket on a chilly cold night, you will wake up to a beautiful morning of North Sikkim. The plan for today is to spend the day sightseeing. The total distance covered will be close to 155 kilometers and will easily take you about 7 to 8 hours. So an early start is highly recommended.

Leave in the early morning and ride/ drive to Chopta valley viewpoint for a beautiful sunrise. From there, you will head to Kalapatthar; the harsh and dry black mountain full of white snow.

After crossing several check posts you will reach the 15000 cafe, the army canteen, and the last check-post prior to reaching Gurudongmar. Here, you must try Momos/ Samosa/ Sandwich and free coffee provided by the Indian Army. After filling your souls with the beauty of Gurudongmar Lake, it’s time to get back to your hotel in Lachen.

Day 4: Lachen to Katao and Return to Lachung

After a long and tiring journey of the previous day, today will be a little relaxing. You will cover about 95 kilometers in a travel time of 3 to 4 hours. Hence you can start in a leisurely manner in the late morning.

First, head towards Katao. You won’t be permitted to go ahead of base-camp but can enjoy the view with a steaming hot cup of tea; provided by our beloved Indian Army. After appreciating the snow-filled mountains for some time, reach Lachung to rest for the day.

Day 5: Yumthang, Zero Point and Dzongu valley

Your travel time today will be about 5-6 hours, covering a distance of 160 kilometers. I will advise an early start on this day as well so you have enough time for sightseeing.

You will first drive to the Lachung monastery followed by Yumthang valley. A small market on the banks of Yumthang River and surrounded by mountains will mesmerize you with its serene beauty.

The next destination will be Yumesamdong, which is commonly known as the zero point. Once you have finished up with playing in the snow, head back to reach Dzongu valley. This is a mountain forest surrounded by deep silence.

Day 6: Dzongu Valley to Siliguri

The travelers may not want to get back to their daily lives with a heavy heart but this is something we all must do for our next adventure. Hence, breaking the silence of the mountain forests, your vehicle will be waiting to take you back to Siliguri. Since this is the last day of the trip you can have multiple pit stops. The distance covered will be 150 kilometers in about 5 – 6 hours, depending on your speed and breaks.

North Sikkim Itinerary for 5 Days

This itinerary will give you an idea of a compact and relatively shorter plan for North Sikkim Trip. Unlike the previous one, this is a pretty straight forward route. If you have a tight schedule but wish to cover all major tourist destinations, then this is the plan for you. The journey will maintain a good ratio of being long as well as relaxed.

Day 1: Siliguri to Gangtok/ Mangan

You will start the journey from Siliguri for Mangan in the morning. This will take around 4 hours 30 minutes, covering 145 kilometers approximately. Or you can also drive to Gangtok which is 125 kilometers from Siliguri and will take you around 3 hours 45 minutes.

The road won’t be smooth but can be called good as compared to other mountain roads. It will remain so until almost 10 kilometers before Mangan. This last but treacherous 10 kilometers long stretch will take you good 40-45 minutes to cover.

Once you reach Mangan, check into a hotel and be prepared for an early morning view of Kanchenjunga, if the weather favored you. Have good food either at your hotel or outside and call it a day.

Day 2: Gangtok/ Mangan to Katao and Back to Lachung

The destination for Day 2 will be Lachung. If you stayed at Gangtok, then the journey will be 152 kilometers long. But if you stayed at Mangan, then you will travel only about 100 kilometers in total.

You will start early (7-8 am) for Yumthang and Yumesamdong (Zero Point). You will need to head towards Yumthang valley via Lachung monastery on the left of a gate where ‘Welcome to Lachung’ will be written.

With a cup of hot tea/coffee, you can appreciate the breathtaking view of Youmthang River surrounded by mountains.

Resuming the journey you will reach snow-covered Yumesamdong. The clock will be ticking towards the afternoon to remind you of your return journey to the hotel in Lachung.

Day 3: Lachung to Yumthang, Zero Point, and Thangu Valley

Soon after an early start go down a kilometer or more from your hotel and turn left for Katao check-post. You won’t be allowed to go to the top beyond base-camp but can enjoy the view with steaming hot tea provided by our beloved Indian Army.

Once you have had your share of the amazing view, head towards Thangu valley to call it a day. Lachen river will mesmerize you during the whole journey from Lachen to Thangu. Remember the stay can be tough here due to freezing cold weather and low oxygen levels at high altitude.

The estimated time of travel will be around 6 hours 20 mins for this day, covering a total of almost 185 kilometers.

Day 4: Thangu to Chopta Valley viewpoint, Gurudongmar Lake, Singhik

You must start early on this day, probably by 5 AM, for an awesome sunrise view at Chopta valley viewpoint. After spending an hour or so, drive back on the extremely bad road to mighty Gurudongmar.

Don’t forget to have breakfast at Cafe 15000 (the Indian Army canteen) before/ after submitting permits on the check-post.

With the happiness of success to reach the 2nd highest lake in the world, you will need to be prepared for the return journey to Singhik, an extreme offbeat place of this route.

The journey will be tough and tiring today as it will take around 7 hours, covering 153 kilometers. I say tiring because of the bad roads that you will travel on this day.

Day 5: Singhik to Siliguri

After a tiring journey of the previous day, this is the day to allow yourself to feel Sikkim’s natural beauty as much as you can. The journey will just be 145 kilometers and 5 hours long so you have the entire day to yourself.

Start at your own convenience from the hotel in Singhik, dry at a relaxed pace, take as many breaks as you want, and reach back to Siliguri.

North Sikkim Itinerary for 4 Days

This is the shortest itinerary for North Sikkim where you will miss some small yet mesmerizing spots but will cover the famous and popular ones. For a trip to North Sikkim, 4 days is what you will need at the least. Any less than this, and you are merely touching the place and coming back.

If you are very short on time but would like to have an adventure to the world’s 2nd highest lake and visit some of the most known tourist destinations of Sikkim, then you should go with this plan.

Please note that if you are not habituated with a long journey, bad roads, in mountains or not comfortable at high altitude, then this plan is not recommended for you.

Day 1: Siliguri to Mangan

This day will be the same as I explained in the 5 Days Itinerary. The only point I would like to add is that you must start early if you only had 4 days.

Day 2: Yumthang, Zero Point, Lachung

This day will also be the same as explained in 5 days plan. Point to add here is that if you had time while returning from Zero Point, you can visit Katao on the same day; then you can come back to the hotel in Lachung.

Day 3: Lachung to Gurudongmar Lake and back to Lachen

This day will be super tiring for you as you have to travel for almost 8 hours, covering about 180 kilometers. On top of it, you will also be at a high altitude, when you are visiting Gurudongmar Lake.

You should start by 5 am from the hotel in Lachung and reach Cafe 15000 via Lachen and Thangu valley. After stamping your permits, head towards your ultimate destination. Don’t forget to carry some chocolates and dry foods which will be needed in the morning; as you would not have time for breakfast when your start and it will take you a while before you get to Cafe.

Day 4: Lachen to Siliguri

If you don’t have a train or flight to catch on the same evening from Siliguri, then only you can start your return journey in a leisurely manner. The driving time to Siliguri from Lachen is around 6 hours 30 minutes, covering about 200 kilometers. But since you will be entering a town in plains, you can reach late at night as well. So drive at a relaxed pace, soak in the beauty of the mountains, and have a great time.

Best time to visit North Sikkim

Being a travel enthusiast, I like to explore my favorite places around the year. In different seasons mountains can make you speechless in a different manner.

North Sikkim is one of those places where a trip is restricted with travel permits. But, except for the heavy monsoon season, you can visit here any time of the year. Even the availability of permits depends on the weather.

February – March

According to me, these two months are the best time to visit North Sikkim. You will get plenty of snow with super cold weather which North Sikkim is known for. Some places will welcome you with Rhododendron. In short, the view will be superb.

April – Mid June

These months are the comfortable ones if we talk in terms of the temperature. It is not going to be too cold and with the spring season on, it is a great time to plan a trip with your family.

The monsoon season here starts from June and stays well until September. In July and August, landslides caused by incessant rains become a common sight. It is not a safe time to be visiting anywhere in the hills for that matter. It can rain anytime anywhere and sometimes for days at a stretch.

Mid September-November

This is another best time to explore North Sikkim. This is the time of the autumn season and you will find a magical golden color in the valleys everywhere. The temperature will be on the moderate side. The weather mostly will stay clear and you will get perfect views of the mountain ranges all around.

In November you can witness snowfall as well if the luck favored you.

December-January

The months of December and January can be considered as the toughest months to visit North Sikkim. Still, adventurous junkies like motorcycle enthusiasts or an adventurer with a 4 WD can attempt this journey.

At this time, there is always a high chance of road blockage due to heavy snow. Permits may also be denied if the place was deemed as unsafe to visit. In these months, traveling to North Sikkim mostly depends on your luck.

The weather is going to be extremely cold so you should be prepared for that. If you want to see snowfall, then this can be a good time to visit.

Permits for North Sikkim

Being an Indo-China border state, Sikkim needs permits for Civilians to travel through most of the places within. The permits can only be issued in an offline manner from Gangtok or Mangan DC office.

Hence, readers please beware that there are no online permits North Sikkim till now. Also, the permits are different for foreigners and Indian Citizens.

Permits for Indian Citizens

Indian Citizens will be required to obtain restricted area permits beyond Singhik. It means that you should have permits in hand before you leave Mangan. You should keep the original as well as 6 – 7 photocopies.

These permits can be arranged by the hotel you are staying in at Gangtok or Mangan. If you have rented a vehicle, you can ask your driver to arrange it on a prior basis.

If you have a day in hand at Gangtok, you can arrange it by yourself as well but frankly, it would be a bit hectic. It would be a wise decision to spend 700/800 on the permit agent and save yourself the time and the hassle.

In order to get the permit, you will need to submit copies of your ID and address proofs (DL, voter cards, passports, etc) and 3 or 4 passport sized photographs. If you are coming by your own vehicle, photocopies of all updated docs of your vehicle have to be submitted. You can also be asked to show the originals in case you are obtaining the permits on your own.

Permits for Foreign Nationals

Foreigners will have to obtain ILP for Sikkim along with restricted area permits. This can be arranged by registered travel agents of Sikkim tourism.

The sad news is that even if you have the restricted area permits, you won’t be allowed to visit Gurudongmar Lake; since it is very close to the Indo-China border.

Foreign nationals are only allowed till Thangu valley, Chopta valley, and zero point on the other side.  The required docs will be obviously the passport with a valid visa.

Places to stay and Eat At

You don’t have to worry about your stay at all. Multiple hotels/ homestays are available all around the North Sikkim with different types of amenities, according to your choices and pocket.

Please note that in the remote and distant areas, the accommodation is basic but comfortable enough. You should also not expect a luxurious stay everywhere you go.

A few lodging options are mentioned below based on the towns or hamlets. All the hotels/ home-stays will offer you lodging with food. It’s your choice which plan (AP/ MAP) you want to opt for.

Hotels in Gangtok

Being the capital of Sikkim, it can offer you plenty of lodging options. Some are super luxurious too. The best place to stay here is around MG Marg as everything you want will be available here.

If you want to stay away from the crowd and a little in silence, you can try at places like Baluwakhani or Bojoghari, etc.

If you are a foodie or alcohol lover, you have plenty of options here to satisfy your need. You can get a few pubs with a good musical environment or can try Tibetan food in ‘Taste of Tibet’.

Hotels in Mangan

The sub-divisional town of North Sikkim won’t offer you many options for stay. A few lodges are available here with a very basic and moderate level of facilities.

You can’t find any big marketplace here like Gangtok but shops selling all kinds of day to day commodities are easy to find. In terms of food as well, there aren’t many options to explore and you will be best off eating at your hotel only.

Hotels in Dzongu

It is a quaint little village in Mangan outskirts, surrounded by the hills and the forest. There are only two homestays here that will give you the pure feeling of staying within nature, far away from artificiality.

Unknown birds and animal sound will accompany you the whole night and wake you up in the morning.

Hotels in Singhik

This is another small hamlet near Mangan, offering you very few homestays to spend your nights in real nature. There is nothing man-made here other than the road and a few wooden houses. The rest is all pure nature. Trying to finding a restaurant in these two places (Dzongu and Singhik) will be a waste of time. You will stay and eat at your homestay only.

Hotels in Lachen

Despite being a mountain village, this place has a significant number of hotels and homestays, offering different kinds of amenities under different price tags.

But rather than staying at a big hotel, I will recommend staying at a guest house somewhere close to Lachen River.

Hotels in Lachung

This is another beautiful small village that has a few hotels. This village’s beauty can’t be expressed in words. There is also a small market here where you can buy some souvenirs.

If you want to taste some local alcohol, don’t forget to try Chang (locally brewed wine) in any of these hamlets. You should have a word with your caretaker or homestay owner for Chang and they can arrange it for you.

Hotels in Thangu Valley

This is the last place before reaching Gurudongmar Lake. It is also the highest place to stay on the entire route at an altitude of 13000 ft.

There are a few homestays available here but just very basic ones. Staying in Thangu Valley will give you the feeling of a place far away from modern civilization. No proper electricity, drinking water from melting snow, or a nearby waterfall is what Thangu Valley is all about.

There are no restaurants here either. You will have to eat at your homestay only. But it is a perfect place to forget all chaos and drown yourself in peace and serenity.

Hotels in Chungthang

This is the place where two roads (towards Lachung and towards Lachen) get divided from the highway. There is also a Gurudwara here known as Chungthang Gurudwara.

It is about 30 kilometers ahead of Mangan and has a few homestays that you can stay in.

North Sikkim Trip Cost

Here comes the most important part of this blog. How much do we have to spend on the North Sikkim trip? Since there are multiple itineraries, the cost also will be different which I will try to simplify.

For example, we will be counting the total cost for two people. If you have a big group of 4-6 people, you will be spending a lesser amount each as the vehicle and permit cost will be shared.

The following cost is also measured with a rented vehicle. If you are coming on your own vehicle, deduct that one and add the fuel cost as per mileage and the total distance mentioned in the itinerary part.

You can also get the tour packages from various travel agents which you can compare with the following rates. Please also note that permits from Mangan will cost you significantly less than Gangtok (Rs. 200/300 instead of Rs. 600/700)

  • Food and lodging for 5 nights: 3000*5 = 15000 rs.
  • Permit cost: Rs. 600
  • Vehicle rent (SUV car from Siliguri to Siliguri): Rs. 24,000
  • 1st-day Breakfast and Lunch cost on the way to Gangtok/ Mangan: Rs. 600
  • Last day Lunch and snacks cost on the way to Siliguri: Rs. 500
  • Miscellaneous cost (like medicines, rent of snow boots, or gloves in case of emergency): Rs. 1000
  • Food and lodging for 4 nights: 3000*4 = Rs. 12000
  • Vehicle rent (SUV car from Siliguri to Siliguri): Rs. 21,000
  • Food and lodging for 3 nights: 3000*3 = Rs. 9000
  • Permit cost: Rs. 800
  • Vehicle rent (SUV car from Siliguri to Siliguri): Rs. 18,000

I hope the information above on planning the best itinerary for North Sikkim was of help. If you have any questions, or need any other details, please feel free to ask in the comments section below, or at our Community Forum , and I will be glad to answer.

Even the soldiers on the other side of border share stories of a human figure patrolling the area during night. The memorial is visited by many locals, families of the Army men and tourists who come here to pay their hearty respect to baba.

Overall in India we find that and have opportunity to go on an 11-day tour of North East India and it was truly an unforgettable experience. The tour package was well-organized and covered all the major destinations in the region, giving us a comprehensive overview of the culture, history, and natural beauty of this lesser-explored part of India. The tour started in Guwahati, the gateway to North East India, where we were greeted by our friendly and knowledgeable tour guide. From there, we traveled to Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, known as the 'Scotland of the East' for its stunning landscapes and pleasant climate. We visited the famous Umiam Lake, also known as Barapani Lake, and were mesmerized by its crystal clear water and surrounding hills. Next, we headed to Cherrapunjee, one of the wettest places on earth, where we got to witness the spectacular Seven Sisters Waterfall and the living root bridges, a unique and fascinating man-made wonder. The tour also took us to Mawlynnong, known as the cleanest village in Asia, and we were amazed by its pristine surroundings and the warm hospitality of the locals. We then continued our journey to Kaziranga National Park, home to the famous one-horned rhinoceros. We were lucky enough to spot these magnificent creatures during our safari in the park. The tour also included a visit to Majuli Island, the world's largest river island, where we got to experience the unique Assamese culture and enjoy a traditional dance performance. The highlight of the tour was our visit to Tawang, located in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, which is home to the second-largest Buddhist monastery in the world. The monastery was a sight to behold, and we were fortunate to witness the daily rituals and prayers of the monks. The tour also took us to the picturesque Sela Pass, which offered breathtaking views of the Himalayan mountains. Throughout the tour, we were impressed by the beauty and diversity of North East India. The accommodations provided were comfortable and the food was delicious, giving us a taste of the local cuisine. Our tour guide was highly knowledgeable and shared interesting insights about the places we visited. Overall, I would highly recommend this 11-day tour package to anyone looking to explore the exotic North East region of India. It was a perfect blend of nature, culture, and adventure, and I returned home with a deeper appreciation for this lesser-known part of our country.
We had a fantastic trip in the North East of India, Organized by Hemender from Travelcon.Visiting the serene mountains was a memorable trip for both of us and we were really felt like we are at a paradise. We informed hemender that we do not want to go the usual Itinerary and wanted few different things and he helped us to fulfil that requirements.I had been to India couple of Times so I knew how to negotiate on prices. There were few airlines and many transfers while visiting this majestic land but was handled seamlessly. Our local guides were awesome and experienced. Our Driver was also a nice person who took care of all our needs while driving. 10/10 I would recommend Travelcon among my friends/family members.

This was my 3rd trip to beautiful India in 3 years and by far the best.  Dilip the leader was an inspiration to all leaders and that made the trip superb. What was the most inspirational moment of your trip? I felt a great warmth from the locals that we kept meeting along the way in the villages that we walked through in the trekking week. What did you think of your group leader? Dilip was amazing and so friendly and gave us so much of his knowledge and kept the group's spirits high on the rainiest days!
This was a fantastic trip with a wonderful team leader and support team.  Lots of variety, as much free time as you wanted, good food and excellent company.  What was the most inspirational moment of your trip? This is difficult as there were so many ...the sun cleared immediately after our arrival at the first camp site, after an afternoon of misty conditions.  We were able to see Kanchenjunga clearly that afternoon and at dawn the following day.Dillo's amazing Bollywood-style dancing at the end of trek celebration :-) cocktails/pink gin at the Windamere (sic) Hotel in Darjeeling.  Dilip managed to get us into the guests lounge, usually out of bounds for non-residents.the overnight train journey was surprisingly enjoyable, and the arrival in Calcutta in heavy rain was quite an experience.Sikkim was lovely! What did you think of your group leader? Dilip was an inspiration, and the group benefitted enormously from his leadership and superb organisational and team-leading skills.  He has established an impressive network of local people from the villages on the route, and we were welcomed warmly wherever we went.  His leadership style is very hands-on, and he himself greeted us every morning on trek with a cup of tea. He was constantly cheerful, despite the freak weather conditions we encountered on the trek, and was always looking for ways to make things more enjoyable for us all.  The chips and pakora were perfectly timed to lift our spirits after a day when misty conditions had obscured the mountain views that we'd all been looking forward to.  He was very good at solving all our problems, large and small - for example, when a few of us were queuing for the ladies loo in Sikkim, Dilip persuaded the restaurant owner to open the VIP toilets in the presidential suite for us.  His leadership ensured that we all had a very enjoyable holiday, despite freak weather conditions,  which were a side effect of the worst cyclone to hit the Bay of Bengal in 40 years. Do you have any advice for potential travellers? Take a good sleeping 4-season bag and the best mattress you can afford (or borrow).  It did get very cold at night on the high points of the trek.Don't hesitate to book if you're thinking of doing this trip - it's been the best holiday we've had for years.  Is there anything else you would like to add? Manu Lai is a great cook.  The support team was wonderful.  We were very sad to leave India and are already looking forward to our next trip.

The travel card had been issued post-covid time. It is not required now.

Thanks Rohit

Travel Card is not required as of now .

sikkim travel reddit

The travel card experiment has been scrapped.

I tried applying for the card and found that some of the buttons in the webpage doesn't work, like the Continue button at the bottom of every page and the Add Traveler button.

But it allowed me to submit although when I tried to download the card, the page showed a message saying that the card has been downloaded but in reality it was not downloaded to my laptop. The page also mentioned that I would need an OTP to download the card but the OTP never came.
