15 Best Time Loop Movies of All Time

of 15 Best Time Loop Movies of All Time

Time loop movies are extremely interesting. They pose a very curious scenarios that often lead to confusing situations. As an audience, you enjoy that chaos and complexity when characters are caught in the middle of a never ending time loop where the day just keeps repeating itself. You end up wondering: What would you do if you got stuck in a loop, and starting to live the same day over an over again? Surely, it will one hell of a ride. Here is a list of top time loop movies ever. You can watch some of these best time loop movies on Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime.

15. Before I Fall (2017)

tom cruise day repeats

A teenage girl, Samantha Kingston (Zoey Deutch) is involved in a fatal car crash, along with her friends on Cupid’s Day (February 12). But a day later she realizes that she is stuck in a time loop, reliving the day of her death again and again. Before I Fall is a well-acted adaptation of Lauren Oliver’s novel, exploring the sci-fi/time-loop genre with a fresh and distinctive perspective. It inspires how can one make their second chances count, and the story-telling is backed by a strong performance from emerging star, Zoey Deutch. This coming-of-age drama though gets derivative sometimes but is quite effective as well and thus it’s worth a watch.

14. Blood Punch (2013)

tom cruise day repeats

Milton (Milo Cawthorne) runs from a rehab center with Skyler (Olivia Tennet) for a money making drug score. But when he is lured into an isolated cabin along with her psychotic boyfriend, he finds out that the trio is reliving the same day independently. Now, it seems like a love triangle gone badly, stories like you have watched a hundred times, but it isn’t.  Filled with exuberant twist and surprises, Blood Punch is an incredibly smart piece of cinematic art, unraveling the story in a conventional but exciting manner trapping the audience with the characters. Unexpectedly, this debut feature of director Madellaine Paxson come along out of nowhere to a successful mixture of mystery and horror blended with the concept of time-loop.

13. ARQ (2016)

tom cruise day repeats

In a post-apocalyptic future, an engineer, Renton (Robbie Amell), faces a home invasion by three masked intruders. When he accidentally breaks his neck while escaping, he wakes up again, eventually finding out, that his invention has caused the time to loop, and the day is repeating itself. He must protect his invention, ARQ, that could deliver unlimited energy and time and could end the wars that have consumed the world.

‘ARQ’ is a low-budget venture of director Tony Elliott (who directed episodes of ‘Orphan Black’) which, makes an impressive use of its limited resources. Backed by Amell’s fairly-acted performance, this tricky sci-fi thriller does a great job in adding many folds and twists in the story-line and then enclosing all of them at the climax. The movie, despite the low budget, remains captivating throughout and does not distract at all. An enjoyable viewing, ‘ARQ’ is recommended on all accounts.

12. Happy Death Day (2017)

tom cruise day repeats

While going to a party on her birthday, Tree (Jessica Rothe), a spoiled brat, is lured into a tunnel and murdered by a mysterious masked man. Upon her death, she wakes up in a classmate, Carter’s (Israel Broussard) room. When she has killed again the next day, she realizes she is reliving her “death day” again and again and sets out to find the killer.

A slasher/horror film, ‘Happy Death Day’, to be honest, is not a serious, horrifying and violent movie, which is the best thing about it. It’s rather more of a fun experience which I would definitely vouch for. No, out of the world entity or gruesome murders, still, “Happy Death Day is an interesting story, that connects all its sub-plots in a way, I’d describe as a  really interesting and enjoyable watch. With a slight romantic touch, the movie is a must-watch entertainer, who critics called ” a modern-day mixture of ‘Groundhog Day’ and ‘Scream’.”

11. 12:01 (1993)

tom cruise day repeats

A jaded employee, when involved in an electric shock accident, is surprisingly stuck in a time loop, that forces him to relive his worst day over and over. Released in the same year as ‘Groundhog Day’ (which I’ll later come to), ’12:01′ was highly overshadowed despite having an exciting storyline. A sci-fi romantic drama, ’12:01′ is worth remembering, whenever the sub-genre of time-loop is in the discussion. A well-written screenplay brought to life by a worthy performance by Jonathan Silverman, ’12:01′ is something you will be willing to watch again sometime after you’ve watched it once.

10. Haunter (2013)

tom cruise day repeats

A teenage girl (Abigail Breslin), is stuck in a time loop with her family since the day they all were murdered in 1985, the fact that only she realizes. But, when connected to another girl living in present times, she seeks her help to find the murderer and end the loop once and for all

The concept of time-loop, adjunct with a supernatural horror thriller movie, is what makes ‘Haunter’ unique in its own way. Though it has an interesting plot, the movie, however, fails to scare or keep the interest up until the end. But, at last, despite”not so good” acting and direction, it’s a worth watch as it gets you scratching and crackling your heads to figure out what’s going on. My advice- you won’t be disappointed.

9. Repeaters (2010)

tom cruise day repeats

A trio trying to get rid of their addiction at a rehab center is stuck in a time-loop after a storm hits them in the middle of the night. As the day repeats itself, they try to make amends in their life, but soon everything starts going sideways. Although a critical failure, ‘Repeaters’, despite not having a star cast, doesn’t fail to create a buzz in your head with its gritty, mind-bending plot. A story of the redemption of three youths, ‘Repeaters’, I’d say is good enough to get the job done.

8. Mine Games (2012)

tom cruise day repeats

Seven friends, staying at a remote cabin, discover an abandoned mine nearby and decides to explore it. The tide turns against them when they find something really strange and incomprehensible is haunting them down there, “Themselves”. For the year 2012, another cabin in a woods movie along with a bunch of young holidaymakers stuck in some horrific abandoned facility was not at all unique or new. So, here we throw originality out the window; thus, the film bombed on a critical measure, big time. The plot details are kind of inspired by various movies of this genre (a few are on the list), so it becomes predictable after a point.

But, despite a very low production budget, ‘Mine Games’ succeed in creating a sense of panic and build up the mystery for most of its running time. My suggestion, give it a try before any of the movies on the list, you might as well enjoy it.

7. Primer (2004)

tom cruise day repeats

A story of two friends, who accidentally invent the machine that enables them to time travel, ‘Primer’, is the most mind-fucked movie ever made. Primer isn’t a traditional movie experience, but something that you might not have ever seen before. A completely confusing storyline, which when finally unfolds by the end, you are left more confused than when you started. Written, Directed and Produced by Shane Carruth, ‘Primer’ is little gem of a movie.  You might have to watch it more than twice to get full grasp of what is actually going on. As Esquire magazine quotes, “anybody who claims he fully understands what’s going on in Primer after seeing it just once is either a savant or a liar.”

6. Triangle (2009)

Jess (Melissa George), a single mother, goes on a boating trip with some friends. When they are forced to abandon their boat due to a storm, they board a derelict ocean liner in order to get to safety. And…..(Plot details of this one has to be kept a secret)

The psychological-horror feature is a “repeatedly” twisting and terrifying story that is very engaging in somewhat a thrilling sort of way. This is a must-watch for any movie-buff, not only because of its amazing story-line and the way it unfolds; but also for the fearless and incredible performance by Melissa George. It’s very confusing and puzzling, whether how one should talk about the movie without giving away anything, but certainly, this is worth a huge applaud.

5. Source Code (2011)

tom cruise day repeats

U.S. Army Captain Colter Stevens (Jake Gyllenhaal  is sent into past within a computed reality again and again in order to stop a bomber who seeks to kill hundreds. Marketed action thriller, ‘Source Code’ is actually an exciting and impressive cinematic work in the science-fiction genre, which unfolds in a fairly intellectual way; all thanks to director Duncan Jones, who previously directed ‘Moon’ (2009). Co-starring Michelle Monaghan, ‘Source Code’ is an enthralling mind game, which will give you no room to blink.

4. Timecrimes (2007)

tom cruise day repeats

Many would argue why “Timecrimes’ is No. 4 on the list, while ‘Triangle’ and ‘Source Code’ lies behind this. For ones who haven’t watched this film, I suggest, you drop any season or movie you’re watching and give this a try. A Spanish-language sci-fi thriller from director Nacho Vigalondo (who later directed ‘Colossal’ in 2016),  ‘ Los Cronocrímenes’ is the story of Hector, a man trying to evade a killer by traveling back in time. ‘Timecrimes’ is one of the “not made in Hollywood” movies that proves there’s no need for a star cast to get the job done. A strong competitor to Shane Carruth’s ‘Primer’, this Spanish thriller is full of paradoxes and mysteries that you’d never be able to predict where the story will go, right up until the end.

With an 88% rating at review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, ‘Timecrimes’ is highly recommended, and it will surely leave you amazed, despite the low budget on special effects and overall production. You’d want to download subtitles for watching this though…

3. Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

tom cruise day repeats

Firstly, it’s a Tom Cruise movie, and then it stars him doing what he does best; action and kill. Set in future, where Earth faces an alien invasion, Major William Cage (Cruise), a PR Officer with no combat experience, is forced to battle in a landing operation against the enemy. However, when Cage dies on the battlefield, he is sent back in time to the day preceding the battle, trapping him into a time loop. He then teams up with S.F. Officer Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt) and learns combat skills while finding a way to stop the extra-terrestrial threat.

What this movie specifically proves is that Cruise has still got it in him. The film’s time reset concept is unique and different from other movies of this genre. It is an enticing thriller, featuring a really well-executed direction by Doug Liman and cleverly crafted screenplay along with power-packed performances by lead actors Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt as well as Bill Paxton and Brendon Gleeson. Watch Cruise dying again and again and again and pull off the script, thus saving the day.

2. Predestination (2014)

tom cruise day repeats

In a world where a bureau uses time travel to stop crime, a cop tries to catch (and kill) a notorious terrorist who goes by the name “fizzle bomber”. There aren’t enough words, reviews, and opinions that can describe the greatness of ‘Predestination’. There are instances where great movies aren’t given the deserving recognition and ‘Predestination’ is one of them. The movie takes the turns in the most unexpected ways and that too till the very last scene. Starring Ethan Hawke in his one of the finest performances, the more admirable role was of Sarah Snook, who steals the show in many of the major sequences.

A classic sci-fi, backed by a creative directorial work and a wonderfully written screenplay. Without going into plot details, I strongly recommend watching this amazing feature ASAP if you haven’t. And if you already have, you know it’s a worth watch again.

1. Groundhog Day (1993)

tom cruise day repeats

It’s an arguable question that, why ‘Groundhog Day’ lies at the No. 1 spot on this list? One of the very first movies based on this concept, ‘Groundhog Day’ revolves around Phil Conners (Bill Murray), an arrogant weather reporter, who is forced to relive the same day over an over, trapping him in a place he hates for the entirety.

‘Groundhog Day’ is an inspirational tale of a man, caught in a time loop, trying to re-examine his life and changing himself into a better being. Bill Murray delivers a fine performance as the protagonist and turns Phil Conners into a role model for any viewer. What makes this film unique is it’s smooth and light story-telling. There are no action sequences, thrill, and mystery, but only a man who lives the same day over and over, trying to make amends daily as he has all the time in the world. ‘Groundhog Day’, throughout the years, has become a basis of comparison for all time-loop movies, which are praised to relive the concept which this film established years ago. For anyone who is willing to try a simple and sober movie and get excited at the same time, this is the film for them.

Killed in Action by Aliens, Over and Over Again

By Manohla Dargis

  • June 5, 2014

Tell me if you’ve heard this one before. A man wakes up and quickly realizes that he’s repeating yesterday, down to the last meal, salutation and conversation. He’s trapped in a kind of time loop. He can’t escape, but, he realizes, he can change. That may not make sense, given the logic of the space-time continuum , but it works just fine in fiction because, well, it’s fiction. To put it another way, “There are no paradoxes in time travel, there can’t be.” Or so says a character in Robert A. Heinlein’s 1964 novel, “Farnham’s Freehold,” about space, time and the apocalypse.

This time around, as it were, the hero isn’t trapped in the maddeningly cute town of Punxsutawney , Pa., as Bill Murray was in “Groundhog Day,” Harold Ramis’s mind- and clock-bending 1993 comedy masterwork. The guy caught in the loop here is played by Tom Cruise, a star who doesn’t do ordinary well. He plays Maj. William Cage, a sensationally adaptable individual who, when confronted with Armageddon, courtesy of scuttling extraterrestrials, would prefer to avoid the fight. But this is a Tom Cruise movie, and so stuff happens, and then it happens all over again and again and again, initially with an engagingly light, comic touch and then with escalating seriousness as Cage’s insouciance turns into gravitas in a war that has united the human world against the alien.

Video player loading

The plot for “Edge of Tomorrow,” which was directed by Doug Liman, has largely been gleaned from “All You Need Is Kill,” a splatter-heavy combat novel by the Japanese writer Hiroshi Sakurazaka. Mr. Sakurazaka doesn’t acknowledge “Groundhog Day,” but he names his heroine Rita — the name of the romantic foil played by Andie MacDowell in that film — suggesting that he is obliquely paying a debt. The debt is more pronounced in the movie, in which Mr. Liman leavens Mr. Sakurazaka’s mordant, too-cool-for-school humor with some wit and a touch of romance with another lovely Rita, this one played by Emily Blunt. Mr. Liman ’s track record with strong female characters, like Angelina Jolie’s in his bullet-ridden comedy of remarriage , “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” bodes well for Rita.

“Edge of Tomorrow,” which has a script credited to Christopher McQuarrie and Jez and John-Henry Butterworth, opens with lock-jawed earnestness and news reports of a global calamity. Extraterrestrials, kinetic creatures called Mimics that look like somersaulting metal octopuses, have conquered most of Europe with their lashing tentacles and are poised to take over the rest of the world. On the eve of a coordinated human assault on the aliens, Cage, a flack for the American military, is called into the office of a general, Brigham (Brendan Gleeson), and told that he’ll be covering D-Day from the front. Cage demurs, raising his brow and breaking out a small, disbelieving smile before beginning a soft-shoe shuffle toward the door.

This song-and-dance rapidly shifts your understanding of whom Mr. Cruise is playing and how. He’s funny! And watching him glide through the opening of “Edge of Tomorrow” — a suggestion of “Jerry Maguire” edging his smile — it’s hard not to think, Where has this guy been? It’s been years since Mr. Cruise felt this light on screen. His smile might have helped make him a star but, like Julia Roberts’s megawatt grin, it rarely beams as brightly as it once did. Part of this is due to his status as an action star. Yet it’s also traceable to a dearth of decent male-female romances and the ascension of mostly male yuk-fests like the gross-out burlesque “Tropic Thunder,” in which he dances in a fat suit.

tom cruise day repeats

In “Edge of Tomorrow,” Mr. Liman brings Mr. Cruise’s smile out of semiretirement and also gives him the kind of physical challenges at which he so brilliantly excels. Mr. Cruise’s great talent has always been body-based; he doesn’t put across complex emotional shadings, tunneling so deep into a character’s psychology that it can feel like a transmogrification. Much like old-school, pre-Method movie stars, he takes possession of his characters from the outside in, expressing their qualities and kinks through his extraordinarily controlled physicality. This kind of performance can be easy to overlook, shrugged off as little more than stunt work, as if acting through the whole body were somehow inferior to emoting with a big, TV-friendly face.

As expected, there are wow-worthy stunts and high-flying bodies in “Edge of Tomorrow,” which finds its groove after Cage discovers that he’s on seemingly endless repeat. In time, he figures out what’s going on and sets out to change fate, which leads him to Rita, a legendary warrior with the cutesy moniker Full Metal Bitch. Any thought that the diminutive-looking Ms. Blunt may not be up to that nickname is put to rest with Rita’s introduction, which shows her holding a fiercely beautiful yoga pose in a combat-training area while whirring blades circle her. It’s a perfect encapsulation of the yin and yang quality that enriches her character and the story, as when she and Cage, like a cloak-and-dagger Fred and Ginger, dart and dodge through a mission with perfect synchronicity.

Eventually, Mr. Liman’s eccentricities and the morbidly funny neo-screwball vibe that he establishes are swamped by generic pyrotechnics and noise. That’s predictable, given the high studio stakes and the industry’s faith in spectacles of destruction, but it doesn’t obliterate the movie’s pleasures. In his afterword to “All You Need Is Kill,” Mr. Sakurazaka explains that he was thinking about video games while writing the novel. “I reset the game hundreds of times,” he writes, “until my special attack finally went off perfectly.” In other words, video games are a type of time machine that allows players, if they put in the hours, to achieve victory. Hence the movie’s clever tagline, “Live, Die, Repeat,” which, of course, echoes the faith that every film genre fan embraces: live, watch, repeat.

“Edge of Tomorrow” is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). Intense violence.

'Edge of Tomorrow' remembers to be fun and funny

As Tom Cruise repeats the same day over and over, "Edge of Tomorrow" breaks the cycle of post-"Dark Knight" blockbusters.

tom cruise day repeats

Remember when movies were fun? The people behind "Edge of Tomorrow" do, and this time-looping alien invasion romp remembers that blockbusters can be fun -- and more importantly, funny.

Tom Cruise plays a cowardly soldier forced to relive a doomed battle over and over again, unless badass Emily Blunt can show him where the safety catch is on his ordnance-packed exoskeleton mecha-suit. It's "Groundhog Day" meets "Aliens", and it's great.

Why so serious?

In the post-"Dark Knight" world, the blockbuster movie has suffered something of an identity crisis, with glorious multiplex silliness replaced by shadowy, stone-faced attempts at profundity. For me, that trend reached its nadir with this summer's first big blockbuster, "Godzilla", which so self-consciously and po-facedly denied its own essential silliness it made "The Dark Knight" look like an episode of Adam West's uber-camp 1960s Batman.

Why so serious, indeed.

edge2-emily-blunt-2.jpg

"Edge of Tomorrow" director Doug Liman is having none of that, and sets about wringing as much comedy from the time-repeating premise as he does explosive action.

Cruise is better than he's been in ages, doing real acting instead of repeating the earnest superhero-in-a-leather-jacket posing of "Jack Reacher", "Oblivion" and the "Mission: Impossible" movies. His Major William Cage is no hero: he's an advertising exec who took a wrong turn into the military, much to the delight of Bill Paxton's scenery-chewing sergeant.

edge2-emily-blunt-5.jpg

The standout though is Emily Blunt, swapping Prada for armour as a toughened soldier -- inexplicably named Rita -- and effortlessly turning her hand to lithe action-figure heroics.

Repeat level?

The wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey premise lends "Edge of Tomorrow" the feeling of a video game, as Cruise tries again and again, getting a little further each time, trying different things -- then being dispatched over and over but continually respawning.

As the repetitions layer on top of each other, a curious thing happens: I genuinely didn't know what was going to happen. Most movies, you pretty much know where they're going, but here I found myself wondering who would make it. And the repeating deaths didn't make me feel the characters' deaths less, but more -- because I knew that if Cruise managed to break the cycle, whoever was dead would stay dead.

edge2-emily-blunt-3.jpg

If I have any complaint it's that the monsters are generic. With the time-loop gimmick providing all the momentum of the story, the monsters are more of a background threat, heavily CGI'd and lacking the unsettling detail that makes a classic movie baddie -- like dinosaurs not being able to see you if you stand still in "Jurassic Park", or the acid blood and snapping jaws in the "Alien" series.

Oh, and the 3D is a waste of time: aside from the usual clichéd debris flying out of the screen, with the glasses on the whole thing looks flatter than Emily Blunt's yoga-honed stomach. As so often, save your money and go 2D.

"Edge of Tomorrow" is in UK cinemas now, and in US theatres on Friday 6 June.

Tom Cruise rewatch: Edge of Tomorrow is practically designed to be revisited several times

The Groundhog Day of sci-fi action, it stars both a very un-Tom Tom, and, a bit later, the intensely disciplined Cruise we know and love.

Senior Writer

In advance of this Friday's release of Top Gun: Maverick , our writers return to their favorite Tom Cruise movies, in appreciation of an on-screen persona that's evolved over decades.

Watch enough summer blockbusters and it can seem like you're viewing the same one over and over again. It is ironic, then, that one of the greatest big-budget extravaganzas to be unleashed on movies screens during the warmer months in recent times — as well as one of the best Tom Cruise movies ever — does exactly that.

In director Doug Liman's 2014 alien invasion movie Edge of Tomorrow , Cruise plays a publicity flack named William Cage who is sent off to die at the hands (well, technically at the the luminescent tentacles) of the monstrous Mimics after falling foul of Brendan Gleeson's General Brigham. Cage does indeed swiftly perish during the course of the human forces' doomed attempt to establish a beachhead in alien-controlled France but gets covered in extraterrestrial blood before he dies, giving him the power to do-over the previous day every time he croaks.

Cruise's character teams with Emily Blunt 's war hero Rita Vrataski, who previously possessed the same power Cage now wields, and together the pair attempt to execute a plan which will banish the alien menace forever, with Blunt literally and repeatedly executing Cruise along the way. The result is in many ways a combination of 1962 D-Day drama The Longest Day with beloved romantic-comedy Groundhog Day . It's a minor miracle the film was never called The Longest Groundhog Day , given that the movie was originally called All You Need Is Kill , was retitled Edge of Tomorrow for its theatrical release, and was then retitled again as Live. Die. Repeat.: Edge of Tomorrow when it arrived on home media.

Edge of Tomorrow is a blast, regardless of what you choose to call it. The film is blessed with a script co-written by Tony-winning playwright Jez Butterworth, his brother John-Henry, and longtime Cruise collaborator Christopher McQuarrie which is both sharp and, when it comes to the time travel aspect of the movie, tricksy. Liman, whose previous credits included Swingers and the first Bourne movie, handles the action mayhem with aplomb while leaving room for moments of drama and comedy between Cruise and Blunt. The latter fulsomely establishes her genre heroine credentials as she marauds through the battlefield clad in her exoskeleton-armor slaying aliens with a modified helicopter blade.

The film's secret weapon — though there is little that is low-key about his performance — is the late Bill Paxton as Master Sergeant Farrell, a voluble exemplar of gung-ho militarism who is put in charge of Cruise's initially reluctant soldier. When I spoke with Paxton about the film, the Aliens actor described it as a "very underrated movie" and also recalled how Cruise had been supportive of him during his early time on set. "We knew each other in passing, so he was digging that," said the actor. "I remember him saying, 'You're killing this part!' I said, 'I haven't done anything yet!' He goes, 'You're killing it!'"

Tom Cruise is, of course, a legendarily enthusiastic person, but it's easy to understand why he might have felt particularly keen on his role in Edge of Tomorrow . The Top Gun star initially gets to play a nice reversal of his usual onscreen persona, portraying someone who runs away from danger rather than toward it, and doesn't even know how to turn off his own gun's safety switch. His character then turns into someone hellbent on achieving perfection through training, a plot development which surely must have appealed to this most autodidactic of actors.

Edge of Tomorrow earned $370 million at the box office around the world, which was regarded as something of a disappointment given its high budget of a reported $178 million. Liman has repeatedly talked-up a sequel, to be called Live Die Repeat and Repeat but last year Blunt indicated to EW that the project still languished in development hell. "That was an amazing script, but I just don't know what the future holds for it," the actress said.

In truth, it is hard to know how they could top a movie whose thrilling mix of action, humor, action, romance, science fiction, propulsive plotting, and terrific central performance renders Edge of Tomorrow one of Cruise's most enjoyable films. Whether you like like seeing the star doing incredible things or having incredibly awful things done to him, this is a movie that was made for repeat viewings.

Edge of Tomorrow review — Tom Cruise gets caught in the repeat cycle in a terrific sci-fi thriller

Edge of Tomorrow —Tom Cruise

Edge of Tomorrow is Groundhog Day meets Starship Troopers.

Just imagine if Bill Murray’s cynical weatherman in Groundhog Day had been fighting aliens instead of trying to woo Andie MacDowell and you’ll have an idea of the plight of Tom Cruise’s luckless hero in the terrific sci-fi action thriller Edge of Tomorrow .

A cowardly PR expert unwillingly thrust into the front line as an army grunt, Cruise’s Major Bill Cage finds himself reliving the same day of terrifying combat against a seemingly unstoppable extraterrestrial force. The deadly alien Mimics have overrun most of Europe, sometime in the near future, and when the United Defense Force launches a D-Day-like assault against the enemy the shirking, smirking Cage reckons he will be reporting the fight from a safe distance.

Instead, demoted to private by Brendan Gleeson’s bullheaded general, he ends up getting sent into battle. Inevitably, he doesn’t last very long. Yet after being killed he doesn’t stay dead but awakens to start the same day again… and again and again. It appears he is somehow caught in a time loop and as he repeats the same situations of training and fighting he gradually hones his skills, teaming up with Emily Blunt’s badass veteran warrior, Rita Vrataski, in a bid to defeat the tentacle-waving enemy.

Get over the shock of seeing the usually heroic Cruise initially playing a clumsy wimp and you will find Edge of Tomorrow a blast. The darkly comic early scenes are by far the best, but although the film becomes more conventional as it goes along, Cruise is a winner all the way, whether he is being a gung-ho hero or the butt of the joke.

Edge of Tomorrow (2014), runtime 109 mins, Director Doug Liman. Released on Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, DVD and Limited Edition Steelbook by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. Blu-ray and Steelbook contain the following special features:

  • Operation Downfall - Adrenaline Cut

Edge Of Tomorrow's Most Confusing Moments Explained

Emily Blunt as Rita Vrataski in Edge of Tomorrow

Though considered a box office disappointment upon its release in 2014, "Edge of Tomorrow" (a.k.a. "Live Die Repeat") remains one of the decade's most underrated sci-fi movies. Directed by Doug Liman and starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, "Edge of Tomorrow" is a futuristic action-adventure twist on "Groundhog Day," following a reluctant soldier who lives out the climactic battle against alien invaders over, and over, and over again.

The past ten years have seen an explosion of new movies and TV shows about characters trapped in time loops, from "Happy Death Day" to "Russian Doll," but "Edge of Tomorrow" is particularly fun for the way the development of Tom Cruise's Major William Cage parallels the way players develop skills and experience in a video game. Many viewers can relate to the character's experience of grinding through a seemingly impossible task again and again, using the advantage of unlimited tries to build confidence in your skills and a better understanding of the challenge ahead. "Edge of Tomorrow" pairs this familiar feeling with a funny and engaging story of a character who, through a bizarre twist of fate, must keep playing this impossible stage forever.

It's possible to get overwhelmed by the mechanics and minutiae of the movie's science fiction plot — here's hoping we can clear up all of your concerns without repeating ourselves.

Is the movie called Edge of Tomorrow or Live Die Repeat?

The film — whatever you call it — is based on a novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka entitled "All You Need Is Kill." According to an interview with Variety , Warner Bros. President of Marketing Sue Kroll found that audiences were put off by movies with the word "Kill" in the title, leading to the project's rebranding. Director Doug Liman, on the other hand, later told Den of Geek that the film was renamed to accommodate the film's tone, which is significantly lighter than that of the source material. He suggested that the film be renamed "Live Die Repeat" instead. Someone at Warner Bros. wasn't fond of this title, and bequeathed the project the more generic-sounding title "Edge of Tomorrow," against Liman's objections. "Live. Die. Repeat." was used as a tagline for the movie instead. Liman feels that this contributed to the film underperforming at the box office despite critical acclaim.

Someone must have listened, because when the movie was released on home video months later, "Live. Die. Repeat." was suddenly the larger print on the box , and digital marketplaces listed the full title as "Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow." Depending on when you purchased a physical copy of the movie, it may feature the two titles in a different order. Doug Liman told Den of Geek that the sequel's working title is "Live Die Repeat Repeat," and that its release would canonize "Live Die Repeat" as the title of the first film.

Has the UDF really turned the tide of the war?

In the film's opening montage, we learn that a meteor has crashed to Earth, bringing with it an invasive extraterrestrial species that humans call "Mimics." They've been spreading across Europe for years, easily overcoming all conventional military defenses. To combat this alien menace, the world's governments join together to form the United Defense Force, or UDF, and begin manufacturing suits of powered armor for their infantry.

When the UDF has their first victory at the Battle of Verdun, the belief is that the new mech suits have proven their worth. After all, Sgt. Rita Vrataski was able to use one to perform incredible and daring feats despite limited experience, proving that (as Major Cage will repeat to the media dozens of times) anyone with minimal training can operate one efficiently. In actuality, Rita's apparently instant mastery of the armor and the battlefield were the result of her ability to repeat any day in which she dies, giving her unlimited replays of any deadly scenario. Since the UDF is unaware of this (and refused to believe it in any of Rita's previous lives), they move forward confidently with an aggressive invasion of France, Operation: Downfall.

However, Rita and her ally Dr. Carter suspect there's still another layer to the Battle of Verdun. They believe that the Mimics eventually allowed the UDF to win at Verdun in order to lend them a false sense of confidence, prompting an all-out assault that would allow the Mimics to annihilate the UDF in a single stroke. It's also possible that the Mimics accepted the result of the Battle of Verdun that ended with Rita losing her ability to reset, deciding that this was victory enough.

Why are the aliens called Mimics?

Throughout the story of "Edge of Tomorrow," the shape-shifting alien menace that's conquering Earth is always referred to as the "Mimics." It's a cool-sounding name that helps to uniquify the film's villain, avoiding the constant reuse of the words "alien" or "enemy." However, although the Mimics do look and move in a strange, ever-changing way, it's never exactly clear who or it is they're "mimicking."

To find an answer to this question, you'd have to go back to the source material, the light novel "All You Need is Kill" by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. There, it's explained that the aliens based their earthly shape on the first life form they encountered after crash-landing on our planet: a starfish.

This idea isn't really represented in the film, with the Mimics receiving a totally original design that doesn't map easily onto anything in our animal kingdom. Their forms are constantly changing, their metallic tentacles forming into legs or sharp spikes, or unraveling so that they can rest flat in the dirt beneath their prey. Since the Mimics' bodies are incredibly fast and perpetually reshaping themselves, the audience rarely gets a good, long, look at them. Ironically, this makes them one of the more interesting and memorable alien designs in recent memory, since we get an idea as to what they look like, but would struggle to describe them to another person. "Starfish" doesn't really cut it, and neither does any other comparison. "Mimic" will have to do.

How many times does Cage die?

When cowardly publicity officer Maj. Cage attempts to blackmail his way out of combat duty, he's demoted to Private and forced onto the front lines of the UDF's invasion of France. After seeing the rest of his squad slaughtered, Cage grabs a claymore mine and blows apart both himself and a particularly imposing Mimic, intermingling their blood as he dies. He awakens the previous day, having acquired the ability to essentially respawn from the same save point every time he's killed, retaining all his memories and skills from all of his previous attempts. Once he realizes that there's no way to convince his superiors of what's happened to him, Cage uses his foreknowledge of the events of the day to experiment with different ways to potentially win the battle.

Though we follow Cage all the way through his first two lives so that we can observe him coping with his new reality, the film quickly falls into a stride in which the audience only sees the most relevant or successful cycles in Cage's time loop. Nearly every time we see him from this point on, it's evident that his latest life is informed by dozens, if not hundreds of unseen repetitions of whatever he's currently attempting. This means that, even though we see him die a mere 26 times in the film, the real number is probably upwards of 1000.

How does Rita know that she can't reset time anymore?

When Cage rescues Sgt. Rita Vrataski on the battlefield, demonstrating a clear foreknowledge of the dangers around them, Rita realizes that he must be on a time loop and instructs him to "find [her] when [he] wakes up." In his next life, Cage finds Rita and learns that, months earlier, she also absorbed the blood of an Alpha Mimic, gaining the ability to start the day over upon her death. However, she lost that ability on her last loop, during which she managed to win the Battle of Verdun but also suffered serious, non-lethal blood loss. When she received a transfusion of new, normal blood, she lost the ability to reset the day.

Upon hearing this, we can't help but ask one logical question: How can Rita possibly know that she no longer resets time when she dies, unless she died and didn't come back? This, unfortunately, is something the viewer simply has to accept in order for the movie to work. To patch up this potential plot hole, we're forced to accept that Rita (and later, Cage), can simply  feel that their ability to reset time is gone. We see it happen to Cage, after he suffers his own similar injury and blood transfusion in the final loop of the film.

Is it beyond belief that Mimic Alphas would have such a sixth sense that allows them to know whether or not they're detached from the time stream? Not entirely. One can imagine that such an instinct might have evolved within Mimics in order to alert an Alpha that it's lost its metaphysical save state. Still, it's certainly convenient for our heroes — and for the audience.

How does the time reset work?

Dr. Carter does a pretty solid job explaining the mechanics of "Edge of Tomorrow's" time travel during his initial meeting with Cage. While most Mimics are of the animalistic soldier variety, there are two special kinds of Mimic that, together, give them their unique advantage over humanity. Their movements are governed by a massive Omega Mimic, a strange and stationary creature with the power to skip backwards in time by about one day. However, the Omega can only do this when its counterpart, the Alpha Mimic, is killed. This is basically a defensive reflex. While the Omega remains hidden, the Alpha goes into battle. If the Alpha is killed, that means a battle has not gone as well as possible and should be attempted again, with the benefit of this experience. In short: the Mimics are save-scumming the war for Earth.

When Cage is infused with the Alpha's blood on the battlefield (as Rita was before the Battle of Verdun), he acquires the Alpha's ability to trigger the Omega's time reset. The Omega is still the one altering time, but its reflex is kicked every time Cage dies, instead of when the Alpha dies. Cage gets the added benefit of countless replays and accumulated experience, giving him an advantage in battle. Like Rita before him, Cage only loses this power once enough of his blood has been replaced.

Can the Mimics still remember previous loops?

Because the Mimics' activities and motivations are kept a mystery from the audience, we never definitively learn what effect Cage's blood infusion has on the Mimics' own abilities. Whether or not the Alpha's death would still trigger a time reset while Cage has the power is never totally clear, since we don't see an Alpha killed between the first and final versions of Operation: Downfall. However, since the Mimics' behavior remains predictable in the time loop, we can safely assume that they are not retaining knowledge from each reset.

The only changing factor is Cage's psychic visions from the Omega, which grow stronger after each loop. This is how the Mimics eventually figure out that Cage has become the new reset trigger, setting a trap for him with a fake vision of the Omega's location. In this loop, the Mimic Alpha corners Cage and deliberately keeps him from killing himself, apparently trying to capture him alive as not to lose this progress. Cage manages to reset anyway, and the Mimics never seem to pay special attention to him again. This implies that they only know of his unique nature on loops in which he gives it away.

Why does Rita kiss Cage?

Before their final charge towards the Omega during their final loop, Rita and Cage share a brief moment during which Rita commends Cage on his bravery during their work together. Just before charging into battle, Rita kisses Cage on the lips, saying that she wishes she'd gotten to know him better.

It's not totally unreasonable to think that Rita might want a last kiss before dying, especially when the available, willing partner is a fellow soldier who looks like Tom Cruise. However, the moment rings a little false when you consider that, while Cage has known Rita for years through the repetition of the time loop, Rita has only known Cage for about a day and a half. True, there have been loops during which Cage and Rita have grown close over the course of a long road trip, but even then, Rita remains an emotionally guarded person who hesitates to let herself feel for Cage. Because each loop implies the repetition of some but not all of the routines that Cage and Rita follow on their usual paths, we actually don't see very much of Cage and this version of Rita, which is one of the reasons that the kiss raises some eyebrows.

In an essay for The Wire , film critic Esther Zuckerman described the last-second romantic twist to be a betrayal of the character for the sake of offering Cage a sort of reward for his personal growth over the course of the film. Indeed, the moment plays as if it's more about demonstrating that Cage is no longer the loathsome, unlovable weasel that we meet at the start of the film than it is about Rita learning to trust again.

Why does time reset further back at the end?

Once Cage has lost the ability to reset time, he and Rita lead a suicide mission to destroy the Omega, which is hidden under the Louvre museum in Paris. Their mission is successful, as Cage is able to drop a belt of live grenades into the Omega's mouth. Cage and the Alpha are caught in the blast as well, and it appears that Cage lives long enough to absorb some of their blood. Then, he wakes up at an earlier point in the timeline than he's accustomed to, before his disgraceful demotion to Private, and learns that the Mimics have lost their capacity to fight the war. Instead of a bloody trench battle, Operation: Downfall will now be met with minimal resistance from the extraterrestrial menace.

This seems awfully convenient for Cage, who has now saved not only the world but his own career and reputation. The film didn't give us a clear explanation as to why this has happened, but we can extrapolate one from the logic of the film. It may be that Cage absorbing the Omega's blood has a different effect than just absorbing the Alpha's, giving him more control over the time stream than he had as merely the trigger for the reset. He may have instinctively selected a moment in time to return to that would put him in the best possible position.

Co-screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie promised in a since-deleted Tweet that the sequel will concretely answer this question.

Why wasn't Edge of Tomorrow considered a hit?

Before the film was even released, the press was already prepared to write off "Edge of Tomorrow" as a flop."Nobody really knows what this film is," entertainment analyst Doug Creutz told Variety in May 2014, weeks before it hit theaters. Whether this is the fault of the generic-sounding title, or the marketing campaign's failure to convey the high concept or comedic tone of the film, or some combination of other factors is still up for debate. In any case, "Edge of Tomorrow" opened at #3 at the box office , losing the weekend to tear-jerking romance "The Fault in Our Stars" and the live-action Disney fantasy "Maleficent."

It's important to put the supposed failure of "Edge of Tomorrow" in perspective. The film grossed about $100 million at the US box office and another $270 million overseas, which is nothing to sneeze at until you consider its reported budget of $178 million. That budget was put to excellent use on screen, crafting practical mech suits for the cast and generating unique and stunning aliens via VFX, but studios make such investments under the expectation of at least doubling their budgets, not picking up table scraps from a teen-oriented drama that cost a rival studio only $12 million to make .

It's also worth noting that projecting "Edge of Tomorrow" to be a failure fit into a popular narrative that Tom Cruise's star was fading in the United States. His previous three films, "Oblivion," "Jack Reacher," and "Rock of Ages,"  were all considered to have underperformed domestically, so it's possible that the atmosphere around the film's release was already poisoned.

Edge of Tomorrow Made the Time-Loop So Stupid it was Brilliant

Sometimes you just want to watch Tom Cruise level up.

Emily Blunt in 'The Edge of Tomorrow'

Live. Die. Repeat. That was the title Doug Liman wanted for the 2014 sci-fi movie Edge of Tomorrow , based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s novel All You Need Is Kill . The film is an interesting study of the question of whether titles matter. Edge of Tomorrow is not particularly memorable, but it’s hard to say if the two other titles would have worked any better. Warner Bros. must have thought so: they elevated Live. Die. Repeat. from tagline to title on the home media release.

Regardless of the innocuous-sounding name, Edge of Tomorrow is a memorable sci-fi movie that revitalizes an ancient trope. It just hit HBO Max, and it’s worth another look for one specific reason: it’s the only contemporary sci-fi action movie that made time-loops seem brand new again.

Edge of Tomorrow stars Tom Cruise as William Cage and Emily Blunt as Rita Vrataski. She’s a war hero kicking alien ass. He’s a smarmy PR guy who works on ensuring the media feels good about a desperate battle being waged against alien invaders called Mimics. Cruise is a cowardly double-talker, and only by getting stuck in a time-loop does he become less of a douchebag. It’s Starship Troopers meets Groundhog Day .

Edge of Tomorrow is full of stock characters, cliche dialogue, and gaping plot holes. The alien Mimics don’t actually mimic anything, and given that they’re as mighty and unstoppable as the Decepticons from the Michael Bay Transformers movies, you’d be forgiven if you thought they looked like rejects from them.

Their invasion plan, meanwhile, feels borrowed from the playbook of a Doctor Who enemy. The Mimics use time-loops to determine the best way to take over a planet, and can therefore win every battle because they’ve already fought it multiple times. But their power to “reset the day” can be hijacked if you get their blood in your blood, which humanity learns by accident. Vrataski (Blunt) once had that power, but now Cage (Cruise) does. Throughout the course of one day repeated many times over, they have to figure out how to work together to save the world.

In a serialized TV series, these very specific time-loop rules wouldn't fly because they’re patently ridiculous. But this is a very good and very fun sci-fi action movie. What makes Edge of Tomorrow work is twofold: the rules and stakes are explained early and clearly, and Tom Cruise starts off playing against type. These might seem like minor touches, but they’re huge. In an early speech from Vrataski’s ally Dr. Carter (Noah Taylor), the rules of the movie are laid out. The film gets a video game quality embedded in it, and you get that Cruise can keep dying until he figures out how to win. But this simple exposition smartly conceals a late twist: the Mimics are trying to trick the humans into giving them their time-loop power back.

This wrinkle is aided by the fact that Tom Cruise doesn’t begin the movie playing a Tom Cruise. Instead of kicking ass, he’s like Matthew McConaughey in How to Lose a Guy In 10 Days combined with a hypothetical Battlestar Galactica draft dodger. What makes the movie compelling is that the audience is waiting for Cruise to start acting like Cruise. The screenplay was co-written by Cruise’s frequent Mission: Impossible collaborator, Christopher McQuarrie, but McQuarrie slows Cruise’s transition into an Ethan Hunt-level badass. Instead, we ignore how silly these aliens are, because we’re too busy cheering as Cruise gets more Cruise-y to give them much thought.

Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise attend the "Edge of Tomorrow" New York Premiere at the AMC Lincoln Square...

Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise don’t make for a terribly charismatic couple, but it’s still fun to watch them carve up aliens.

Emily Blunt is a good foil for Cruise who, of course, falls in love with the only person who can help him. For some critics, this romance went too far and devalued Blunt’s performance. And while this may be true in terms of presenting ideal archetypes, Edge of Tomorrow has the same level of realism as Emily in Paris . If anything, the movie has a weird amount of restraint when it comes to the tacked-on love story.

Nothing about Edge of Tomorrow looks good on paper. It’s riddled with contradictions, and the messy ending may leave you wondering what exactly happened. And yet there’s a charming tone throughout. The movie isn’t using time travel to make you feel smart, or Tom Cruise to make you feel sophisticated. Edge of Tomorrow doesn’t pretend to be a smart or sophisticated movie. But it is an effective one.

Throughout the film, Emily Blunt wields an insanely huge anime sword . This weapon seems impractical, and unwieldy, and defies the logic of the fictional world in which it exists. And yet it’s awesome, and when the movie is over you wish you’d seen her use it even more. It’s possible that the edge of Emily Blunt’s sword is where the purest enjoyment of movies exists: we can’t justify it intellectually, but damn if it doesn’t work.

Edge of Tomorrow is streaming on HBO Max .

Screen Rant

Why edge of tomorrow has two different titles.

Edge Of Tomorrow is also known by its original poster tagline Live Die Repeat. Here's why the Tom Cruise sci-fi film has two different titles.

Tom Cruise’s 2014 sci-fi blockbuster Edge Of Tomorrow is also known as  Live Die Repeat – here's why the film’s title has a split personality. Live Die Repeat is based on the 2004 Japanese novel All You Need Is Kill by author Hiroshi Sakurazaka. The story follows a cowardly Major named William Cage (Tom Cruise) who is forced to take part in a landing operation against an invading alien race. Cage has no combat experience so he’s quickly killed – only to be resurrected via a time loop. Cage soon learns to use this ability to become a better fighter and to figure out a way to stop the aliens winning.

While Live Die Repeat was known as All You Need Is Kill early in development, it seems nobody on the production was fond of this title. They felt it was too harsh with director Doug Liman, in particular, finding it ill-fitting for what is essentially an action comedy. Liman pushed hard for the film to be called Live Die Repeat , but an executive at Warner Bros wanted to rename it Edge Of Tomorrow . Despite pushing for his preferred title, Liman was overruled and the movie was released as Edge Of Tomorrow . Live Die Repeat  thus became the poster tagline.

Edge Of Tomorrow was released to solid reviews , with critics praising the film’s surprisingly witty script, the performances of Cruise and Emily Blunt and its use of video game logic . Despite this, the movie was considered something of a financial disappointment compared to its critical reception. The film was a major blockbuster based off of somewhat obscure source material with a generic sounding title, and no article on Edge Of Tomorrow could resist comparing it to  Groundhog Day . Those factors seemingly combined to drag down the film’s box-office tally and Liman felt personally vindicated in his belief Live Die Repeat should have been the title.

Liman actually railed against the executive who insisted on the original title to the point he had to call and apologize, but then something interesting happened. When the movie came out on home media the tagline Live Die Repeat became so prominent on the cover it dwarfed Edge Of Tomorrow ; on Amazon, the film is even titled Live Die Repeat: Edge Of Tomorrow . This appeared to be an effort by the studio to rebrand the movie in light of its disappointing theatrical run. The response to this new title was more positive, though some viewers were confused about the sudden change of title.

Liman wants to make this branding permanent, with the movie’s potential sequel being developed under the working title Live Die Repeat And Repeat . While the movie wasn’t necessarily a financial behemoth, it garnered a fanbase due to positive word of mouth, with many feeling Live Die Repeat is one of Cruise’s best blockbusters in recent memory. The storyline for Live Die Repeat And Repeat has yet to be revealed, though Liman has boldly claimed it will revolutionize the way sequels are made and will explain the murky logic of the original movie’s ending . The sequel has yet to be officially greenlit, however, but if it goes ahead maybe the trilogy could end with Live Die Repeat: All You Need Is Kill ?

Doug Liman Gives Update on 'Edge of Tomorrow 2,' Including Script Status

Will everyone's schedules ever clear all at once?

During a long conversation with our very own editor-in-chief Steve Weintraub , director Doug Liman (whose new movie Locked Down arrives on HBO Max this week) opened up about Edge of Tomorrow – both in terms of his feelings on the film and the prospects of a sequel to his 2014 sci-fi adventure that starred Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt .

Firstly, Liman prefers the title Live Die Repeat , which was the film’s original tag line and used as a title when the film made its way to home video (it was based on a Japanese “light novel” with the even cooler name All You Need Is Kill ). If you haven’t seen the film (and, really, you should), it concerns Cruise’s civilian who gets drafted into a war between humans and an invading alien army. On his first day as a trooper, he begins repeating the day, over and over again, every time that he dies. “I hated the Edge of Tomorrow title. I fought Warner Bros on it and they insisted,” Liman told Collider. “And I think it’s the wrong title for the movie and I’m still hoping the film gets fully rebranded, because these films live forever in libraries.” (Later in the interview, he blames the movie’s commercial underperformance on the the fact that the studio “forced the wrong title on it.”)

Moving onto the subject of a sequel to the film, which has been rumored for years now, Liman admits that it is still in consideration. “It’s a very high bar because that was a really challenging film to go make,” Liman explained. “When you try and develop a movie with a world that involves time travel, you quickly realize that humans are never going to travel through time because there are so many paradoxes. You can hardly get through a screenplay. At some point during the development of the screenplay of the first film, Warner Bros said to me, ‘Does he need to travel through time? Maybe he could just battle aliens.’ I was like, ‘Well if you want me to make this movie, he does. I’m not interested in aliens, I’m interested in the repeating the day part.’”

Should the sequel go forward, it’s the filmmaker’s idea that the movie would actually be smaller . “I’ve always been interested in the idea of a sequel being more character-driven than the first film, because that’s not how things are normally done. That’s been my approach when developing the sequel and because Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt are such phenomenal actors. I get sometimes the sequel just has to have more firepower or more explosions but no visual effect is going to top what you’re going to get from a great scene performed by Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.” And it’s Blunt and Cruise’s availability that could get the Edge of Tomorrow (sorry, Live Die Repeat ) sequel off the ground.

“It’s one of these things where if Tom, Emily and I were to say, ‘we’re ready to pull the trigger on this script,’ it’s Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, the film gets made,” Liman said. “That’s pretty much how Hollywood works. The stars are the gatekeepers. If you can get Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt to commit to the movie, it’s going to happen.”

We should probably pause here and say that Liman says that the script (which was being worked on, at various points, by Cruise’s chief collaborator and the original film’s co-writer Christopher McQuarrie , the team of Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse , plus later rewrites being by original writer co-writer Jez Butterworth and most recently Matthew Robinson ) still isn’t totally there yet. Although Liman says this fact isn’t “really an impediment.” In fact, that’s more or less how they made the first movie.

“For Live Die Repeat , the script wasn’t there when we started shooting. Tom and I often laugh about this, that during prep on that movie we’d say to ourselves, ‘There’s nothing like a looming start date for the shoot to put pressure down to get the script right.’ And then while we were shooting the movie, we’d say to ourselves, ‘There’s nothing like a looming wrap date to really put pressure down to getting the script done.’ Then when while we’re editing the movie, we’re like, ‘There’s nothing like a looming release date to force you to get the script right.’ These are really big, imaginative movies,” Liman said. “It’s not Locked Down where it’s one writer’s singular vision and you want to shoot that exact story with that intimacy. The canvas is so much bigger than any one person.” And considering how many writers have already worked on the project, that is very apparent.

Look for Steve's full interview with Doug Liman on Locked Down very soon.

Edge of Tomorrow

Edge of Tomorrow review – 'Tom Cruise in a sci-fi Groundhog Day, without the jokes … or the thrills'

D oug Liman's futurist action movie, featuring the zero-chemistry pairing of Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt , is based on a 2004 novel by Japanese SF author Hiroshi Sakurazaka. But there is another more obvious debt from further back. Planet Earth is fighting an alien invasion and Cruise plays William Cage, a slick PR guy given honorary rank as major and permitted to strut about in uniform as he spins the army's campaign strategy to the media.

Irritated by this popinjay on his payroll, General Brigham (Brendan Gleeson) sends Cage to the front, where he must fight alongside legendary badass warrior Rita (Emily Blunt), and then a weird thing happens. Cage drops into a cosmic time loop: he is condemned to fight the first day's battle over and over again, but he gets better and better at fighting, braver and braver, and more and more attractive to the imperious Rita. Just like Bill Murray mastering the piano in Groundhog Day.

Playing the same plot over again may conceivably be Liman's postmodern tribute to the late Harold Ramis's matchless comedy masterpiece, but when Bill Murray repeatedly lived out the same ridiculously banal day, it was (at least partly) a symbol of his emotional stagnancy.

As for Tom Cruise as Cage, well … he starts off bad and winds up good, but really this isn't a metaphor. He drops into a time loop. He fights. He is super-awesome. That's it. It's supposed to be exciting, not funny – although Groundhog Day was exciting and funny.

The comedy there derived from existential horror at being forced to re-examine ordinary reality in such detail. Edge of Tomorrow is quite different; it is basically deadly serious, and after some moderate knockaboutfun, settles into something pretty dull. Where's the edge?

Edge Of Tomorrow: Live Die Repeat | 2014

Major William Cage ( Tom Cruise ) is sent in to battle against aliens only to relive his first deadly encounter over and over again, Groundhog Day -style, gradually honing his military skills in Doug Liman ’s imaginative sci-fi actioner.

The suits who determine these things scuppered the film’s initial release by replacing the engagingly quirky title of All You Need Is Kill with the most blandly generic and forgettable title imaginable. The DVD release was repackaged under the film’s much snappier tagline Live Die Repeat .

The movie was made in the UK , being the first production to be made at the Leavesden Film Studios in Hertfordshire following its major refurbishment by Warner Bros. Originally Leavesden Aerodrome, an airfield and Rolls Royce airplane engine factory, the complex was first turned into studio space for the 1995 Bond film GoldenEye . The venture proved so successful that Leavesden was rented out to be used for the Harry Potter films. Part of it now houses the series’ sets as The Warner Bros Studio Tour – London .

For Edge Of Tomorrow , nearly 50 sets were built at Leavesden , including part of ‘Heathrow Airport’, as well as the ‘Louvre’ and ’Place de la Concorde’ for the Parisian battle section. Even the ‘Normandy’ beach was built on Leavesden ’s back lot.

Edge Of Tomorrow film location: Trafalgar Square, London WC2

Cage makes his arrival by helicopter in the centre of London ’s Trafalgar Square – only a major Tom Cruise film could be granted such a privilege. On the day of the much-publicised shoot, the Square ’s fountains were turned off and nearly a dozen cameras used to capture the one-off landing.

Edge Of Tomorrow film location: Ministry of Defence, Horseguards Avenue, London

The ‘United Defense Force Headquarters’ to which PR man Cage is taken for a briefing by General Brigham ( Brendan Gleeson ) is the UK’s actual Ministry of Defence on Horseguards Avenue , off Whitehall which runs south from Trafalgar Square . For some reason, the two monumental statues flanking the huge doors are digitally removed. The Ministry is seen again onscreen in No Time To Die , when Bond visits M.

This real Ministry is directly alongside the (non-existent) gents' toilet entrance to the 'Ministry of Magic' in Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part I .

When the reluctant Cage is forcibly assigned his battlefront mission, the airfield really is London ’s Heathrow Airport , enhanced with plenty of CGI and military paraphernalia.

The army base itself is a now-disused army facility at Barton Stacey , southeast of Andover in Hampshire .

The action scenes on the ‘Normandy’ beaches are mainly the Leavesden backlot where, over four months,1,300 tons of sand were shipped in and surrounded by an 1,800-foot green screen to allow for CGI extensions.

But wider shots of the beach were filmed at Saunton Sands , near Braunton on the north coast of Devon – previously used for coastal scenes in Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger ’s 1946 classic A Matter Of Life And Death and Alan Parker ’s film of Pink Floyd: The Wall .

Edge Of Tomorrow film location: Coach and Horses pub, Clerkenwell, London

Taking a break from the army base, Cage rides his bike for reasons which are not immediately obvious through Horseguards Parade (behind Whitehall in Westminster ) and up The Mall , from Admiralty Arch toward Her Maj’s home, Buckingham Palace .

His destination turns out to be the trendy Clerkenwell area to the east, where the pub in which he stops for a pint, and gets called a coward for not fighting, is the Coach and Horses , 26-28 Ray Street, EC1 , a traditional boozer turned smart gastropub. When the bar’s power fails, he rushes out onto Ray Street and almost immediately finds himself back in the centre of town on Waterloo Bridge , where he witnesses an alien invasion from the waters of the River Thames .

Incidentally, facing the Coach and Horses entrance on Ray Street runs Back Hill, where you can see the side entrance to St Peter’s Italian Church, which is where George ( Bob Hoskins ) meets the elusive Cathy in Mona Lisa .

How Live Die Repeat And Repeat Will Be Different Than Edge Of Tomorrow

Edge of Tomorrow Tom Cruise Emily Blunt Live Die Repeat

Considering the fanbase that Edge of Tomorrow has developed since its 2014 release, the sequel has a lot to live up to. Luckily, it sounds like the folks behind the next flick, tentatively titled Live Die Repeat and Repeat , want to make sure that the highly anticipated follow-up is every bit as innovative as the first film. According to director Doug Liman , part of that will involve breaking away from the structure of the first film and sending the story of Tom Cruise 's Bill Cage back in time in a way that we haven't seen before. Liman opened up while promoting American Made and explained that Edge of Tomorrow 2 will look a little different.

It picks up where the last one left off, but then we go backwards in time. I love it way more than the story of the original film.

Doug Liman's comments to Yahoo Movies about Live Die Repeat and Repeat 's story continue to double down on frequent his assertion that the movie will play with time in a way that we haven't seen before. He has previously gone on record saying that the sequel also serves as a prequel to Edge of Tomorrow , and it will " revolutionize " the way Hollywood treats follow-up movies. Rather than recycle the original film's Groundhog Day -esque format, Live Die Repeat and Repeat may chronologically take place before the original, while allowing the heroes to use the skills they acquired during their first adventure. In the (literally) immortal words of Deadpool 's Wade Wilson, "these timelines are so confusing."

It's not hard to assume that Doug Liman and Tom Cruise have quite a bit of goodwill going into this second installment in the Edge of Tomorrow story. In the face of a somewhat lackluster theatrical run (not to mention some woefully misguided studio notes during the first film's development), the property has gone on to maintain a strong fanbase that seems to appreciate its commitment to hard sci-fi. Given Liman's own enthusiasm for the direction of the story, there's a lot to get excited about.

It also sounds like Doug Liman intends to switch up the way Live Die Repeat and Repeat treats its lead character. During a chat with CinemaBlend about the project earlier this summer, Liman explained that the story of the next film will evolve Tom Cruise's Bill Cage into a true hero , rather than the definitively self-serving anti-hero that he remains at the climax of Edge of Tomorrow -- though he now admits it will still retain some of that anti-hero charm. With a new storytelling format that tinkers with the chronology of the universe and some new territory to cover for its lead character, Live Die Repeat and Repeat could shape up to be one of the most interesting sequels in recent memory.

CinemaBlend will keep you posted with more information related to Live Die Repeat and Repeat as new details about the prequel/sequel become available. Until then, check out Doug Liman's latest collaboration with Tom Cruise when American Made hits theaters later this month on September 29, and take a look at our 2017 movie premiere guide for more up-to-date information on the rest of this year's silver screen releases!

Victoria Beckham’s 50th Birthday Party: From a Spice Girls Reunion to Tom Cruise Breakdancing & More

The fashion icon had a star-studded bash to celebrate her 50th birthday! Her old girl group performed some moves together, and other celebs attended the massive celebration.

Victoria Beckham   kicked off her 50th birthday with a bang! The former Spice Girl threw a huge, star-studded bash to celebrate her special day on Saturday, April 20. Victoria welcomed tons of famous friends to celebrate with her and her family, including her husband  David Beckham ,  and kids  Brooklyn ,  Cruz ,  Romeo , and  Harper , to help her ring in her 50th year!

One of the most exciting moments from the festivities included that Victoria reunited with her former girl group, the Spice Girls ! Victoria (Posh Spice) joined her old bandmates  Mel B  (Scary Spice),  Melanie C  (Sporty Spice),  Emma Bunton  (Baby Spice), and  Geri Halliwell  (Ginger Spice) to perform their dance moves to the song “Stop.” David shared a short video of the girls doing the synchronized dance on Instagram . “I mean come on,” he wrote in the caption, while tagging all of the ladies.

Victoria shared a photo of the reunited girl group on Instagram . “The best gift to be reunited!! Thank you to all my friends and family for celebrating with me. Kisses!” she wrote in the caption.

The Spice Girls weren’t the only ones dancing for Victoria’s special day!   Tom Cruise   took some time away from filming the upcoming  Mission Impossible  film to attend the party. He showed off his dance moves to really steal the show, one guest told   Daily Mail . “People were absolutely dumbfounded,” the insider said.

Tom and the Spice Girls weren’t the only A-listers on the guest list for the party.   Salma Hayek , Eva Longoria , and Gordon Ramsay were all also seen heading into the birthday bash. Unfortunately, cameras were banned, so other than the Spice Girls video, it doesn’t seem like we’ll get more glimpses of what went down in the party anytime soon. It did seem like an excellent bash though, as Victoria was seen getting a piggyback ride from her husband out of the party afterwards.

When Victoria’s birthday hit, David penned a beautiful message for his wife to kick off the festivities, paying tribute to her hard work over the years. “Happy Birthday to my beautiful wife… As you head into this birthday you should look back and be proud of what you have accomplished, achieved & what you have built, Posh spice, business woman & of course marrying an England captain,” he wrote.

Tom Cruise brought down the house at Victoria Beckham’s star-studded 50th birthday party .

The “Top Gun: Maverick” star, 61, “absolutely dumbfounded” guests Saturday night by breakdancing and doing splits, a fellow partygoer told the Daily Mail Monday.

Cruise, who has known Victoria and her husband, David Beckham, for nearly two decades, has been living in the UK while filming “Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two,” which is expected to hit theaters next year.

The “Risky Business” star was dressed to the nines for the occasion in a classic black tuxedo with a bow tie and shiny black shoes.

Cruise was far from the only A-lister who attended Victoria’s grand fête in London.

All of the fashion designer’s fellow Spice Girls — Melanie “Mel C” Chisholm, Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell and Melanie “Mel B” Brown — also showed up for the festivities.

The girl group even staged an impromptu reunion to perform their 1997 hit song “Stop” for the attendees.

Victoria had her party at the private members’ club Oswald’s and stunned in a celestial sheer mint gown featuring ruffled details along the hem.

The guest of honor arrived on crutches after breaking her foot during a workout earlier this year, but she did not let the injury stop her from going all out for her milestone birthday.

She was joined by her athlete husband, who was dressed in a tux, as well as their four children: sons Brooklyn, 25, Romeo, 21, and Cruz, 19, and daughter Harper, 12.

Other stars at the soirée included Gordon Ramsay and Eva Longoria.

Notably absent from the momentous occasion was Brooklyn’s wife, Nicola Peltz, who instead spent time with her grandmother .

The “Bates Motel” actress, 29, shared a photo with her grandma on her Instagram Story but also made sure to send her mother-in-law some birthday love.

“Happy Birthday to my beautiful MIL @victoriabeckham,” she wrote in another Instagram Story. “I’m so sad I’m not there to celebrate you and hug you! Sending all my love from me and Naunni.”

Peltz and Victoria were rumored to have feuded during the former’s 2022 wedding to Brooklyn .

They allegedly butted heads over wedding planning, and tensions were also high after the bride decided to wear a wedding gown not made by Victoria’s fashion house.

However, Peltz denied she had any beef with the former pop star and explained that she could not wear a dress by Victoria’s eponymous brand due to timing issues.

“I was going to and I really wanted to, and then a few months down the line, she realized that her atelier couldn’t do it, so then I had to pick another dress,” she  told Variety  at the time.

“She didn’t say ‘you can’t wear it;’ I didn’t say I didn’t want to wear it. That’s where it started, and then they ran with that.”

Brooklyn also  denied there was any bad blood between his wife and mom.

Victoria and Peltz appear to have mended their relationship, as they have posted sweet messages about each other on social media numerous times since.

Amid the glitz and glamour of Victoria Beckham 's extravagant 50th birthday bash, Tom Cruise showcased a moment of chivalry as he helped a photographer who had stumbled outside the venue.

The Top Gun actor, exuding his trademark suave demeanor in a sharp black suit and shades, diverted from entering the festivities to assist the paparazzo, who had taken a tumble. With effortless grace, the 61-year-old extended a helping hand, swiftly grasping the photographer's arm and aiding him back to his feet.

Victoria's milestone celebration unfolded in grandeur at Oswald's in Mayfair, London, where she spared no expense in orchestrating an unforgettable evening. Accompanied by her husband, David, and their brood of Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper, the fashion icon radiated jubilance as she marked the occasion in style.

Among the star-studded guests were Victoria's fellow Spice Girls  -- Melanie Chisholm , Geri Halliwell ,  Emma Bunton  and  Melanie Brown  -- all arriving to revel in the festivities. Cruise himself, alongside Victoria's close confidante Eva Longoria, crooner Marc Anthony, and a plethora of other renowned personalities, converged on the exclusive members' bar.

An eyewitness tells ET, "Tom was in amazing spirits while celebrating Victoria’s birthday. He had great energy and was dancing throughout the entire night. He had so much fun."

On Saturday, David, 48, treated his Instagram followers to a special performance from Victoria's 50th birthday celebration: a Spice Girls reunion.

"I mean come on x @victoriabeckham @melaniecmusic @officialmelb @emmaleebunton @gerihalliwellhorner 💚💛🧡💜💙," David captioned the post.

In the video, the camera pans to Victoria (Posh Spice), Geri (Ginger Spice), Emma (Baby Spice), Mel B (Scary Spice) and Mel C (Sporty Spice) all in a line doing their iconic dance moves while singing their hit, "Stop."

While the Spice Girls are in action during the moment, David sings along with the rest of the room.

Victoria celebrated the moment on her respective Instagram.

"Best night ever! Happy Birthday to me! I love you all so much! #SpiceUpYourLife," the fashion designer captioned the video.

Mel B also shared the video on her Instagram alongside a cheeky caption.

"About last night #tourdatescomingsoon," she wrote on the video.

Meanwhile, Emma posed with Mel C prior to the party.

"Off to celebrate our special girl @victoriabeckham #spicegirls #holdontoyournickersgirls," she captioned the post featuring her and Mel C posing in their gowns.

The Spice Girls reunion comes one month after the group marked the 30th anniversary of their auditions. The last time the women officially reunited was for their tour in 2013, though Victoria notably skipped out on it.

"Today marks the 30th anniversary of the very first Spice Girls auditions!" they wrote last month. "What started back in 1994 has turned into an amazing journey, way beyond anything we could have ever imagined. Thank you to our fans for your support from day one #FriendshipNeverEnds ."

In the video montage, set to their 1996 hit, "Wannabe," the women are shown dancing and goofing around with each other while wearing casual '90s outfits.

In January, Mel B opened up about the bond the women share after three decades of friendship.

"I was a Spice Girl at the age of 17. I'm old," she told Jennifer Hudson at the time. "I'm feeling old right now. But it is amazing that we've managed to kind of still stay friends. It's been 30 years. What you go through as a group... you are just welded together for life because you've been through such a crazy experience."
