Krabi 1 day tour package

My experience

The white water rafting in Krabi was epic fun and tour guide made sure I had a mega time. I’m sure they will for you. On the white water rafting be prepared to get wet, soaking wet. I was drenched, but soon dried off. Also, you don’t have to use your own energy paddling the raft, your two guides will do it all for you. Easy. I also had the option to extend my 5 kilometre rafting experience to 7 kilometre, this is part of the Krabi 1 day tour package .

My other favourite part of the day was the quad biking (ATV), this was mad fun. We had four of us in the group driving through the jungle on our own quad bike. Don’t worry if you’re not confident, there’s a guide at the front and you can always jump on the back of another riders quad. You will also get a chance to get a glimpse of some elephants along your ride through the jungle.

Overall the day is mega. There isn’t many day trips in Thailand that I have experienced that fits this much fun stuff into done day.

Where to stay for the Krabi 1 day tour package

I stayed in accommodation in Ao Nang near the beach called cliff view resort. It’s treehouse style rooms, swimming pool, gym and Buffett breakfast. All for just 500 BHT, definitely one of the best and cheapest places to stay in Ao Nang. It also includes a free shuttle every hour to Ao Nang beach, this is where all Ao Nang’s best restaurants can be found.

The amazing  Ao Nang cliff view resort  honestly it’s one of the best places in Asia I have stayed at.

Top tips and things to know about the tour package

Here is a list of things to know;

  • Snacks  –  I didn’t take any snacks and I was fine, to be honest the buffet lunch keeps you filled up for the day. Although, I know some of you may get peckish so you might want to take a few snacks to last you through the day. Also, it takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes from Ao Nang to the Krabi 1 day package, so snacks would be perfect for that journey.
  • Towel and change of clothes  –  Due to you get soaking wet the white water rafting you may want to take a change of clothes and a towel to dry off. I didn’t take any and I just naturally dried off, but not everyone likes sitting in wet clothes.
  • Bring book and headphones  –  You may want to take some self entertainment for the journey, it’s a good chance to finish that book you’ve been reading or just listen to a few tunes.
  • There’s essentials for sale  –  Don’t worry if you forget something on the day trip, there is a shop at the white water rafting centre that sells everything you need such as; wet shoes, waterproof cases, t-shirts and much more.
  • Bring waterproof case  or GoPro –  You obviously need plenty of great photos from the day and definitely from the white water rafting, so make sure you bring an action camera for the day or maybe a waterproof case for your phone.

The first time I went to Krabi years ago, I have to be honest, I was disappointed. Sure the beaches are absolutely stunning and the water crystal clear, but for some reason, I just didn’t enjoy it. Coming from Koh Samet , I don’t know if it was too touristy or if I just didn’t explore well enough.

When I got home I heard people praise the area and talk about all the beautiful places they had visited. I saw so many photos on social media that just didn’t match my experience.

So I decided to do something about it. I went back to Krabi and this time I treated myself to this gorgeous hotel , one of the best places to stay in Krabi . I also spent the first three days on guided tours . And it worked. The second time around I fell in love with the towering cliffs surrounded by fields of palm trees and turquoise water.

The stubborn traveler in me has always liked to explore places on my own at my own pace. However, I’ve found recently that I get so much value from joining guided tours when I first arrive, to get the lay of the land. Then I can go back and explore more thoroughly on my own.

It’s also a great way to meet other travelers that you can spend time with during the rest of your trip. Some of the people I’ve met on guided tours over the years have become good friends.

Don’t have time to read the whole article? Here’s a list of my Krabi favorites.

10 best tours in Krabi

Written by Ryan from  WaylessTravelers

Rock climber high up on a vertical cliff during a climbing tour in Krabi, Thailand.

When exploring Southern Thailand, we were fascinated by the countless beautiful beaches and the options for island hopping tours. However, if you are interested in an activity that will really get your heart pumping, then definitely check out rock climbing in Railay Beach, Krabi.

Railay is a small remote peninsula cut off from the mainland by its massive limestone cliffs. These cliffs attract rock climbers from all around the world and we were eager to experience this ourselves.

By joining this  rock climbing tour , we were picked up from the nearby town of Ao Nang and ferried over to Railay. From there, your guide will determine your rock climbing level and pick the ideal cliff for you to climb.

These limestone cliffs are perfect for rock climbing since their uneven formation provides an abundance of hand and foot holds. So even if you are an absolute beginner, this tour can be perfect for you!

We took the half-day tour and at first, were presented with easier routes. Once we got the hang of it, the guide brought us to another cliff face where I went to climb up about 40 feet in the air! The guides were cheering us on as we went higher and higher.

Other than the sheer thrill of scaling these limestone walls, the cherry on top is that you get an incredible view of the surrounding landscape!

Drone view of the Tiger Cave Temple with a large gold Buddha sitting above the treet tops in the jungle with rolling hills in the background. Seen during a fantastic tour in Krabi.

Normally I wouldn’t book a tour with Instagram in the name. But hear me out, this turned out to be one of my favorite tours I’ve ever done in Thailand.

Dew, my lovely English-speaking guide, picked me up from my hotel bright and early at 7:00 am. We got to the Emerald Pool about an hour later and had it all to ourselves for some time. It was absolutely stunning.

Then the tour continued to the Tiger Temple, a sacred site known for the tiger paw prints in the cave, tall Buddha statues and the strenuous hike up the stairs to reach the summit. I’m not in the best shape, but I still made it to the top. Dew was super patient and encouraged me along the way.

After a delicious lunch, we stopped at one of the most beautiful temples in Krabi, Wat Kaew Korawaram (up there with the temples of Chiang Mai ), before heading out on the water in a longtail boat to Phra Nang Cave and Railay Beach.

It was such an awesome day from start to finish. Dew isn’t only a knowledgeable guide but also a great photographer.

View of the white beach in Maya Bay (Phi Phi Islands) lined by greenery and towering cliffs with, during one of the best tours in Krabi.

If you ever find yourself in the tropical paradise of Krabi, then there is one guided tour that you cannot miss – a day tour to the Phi Phi Islands and Maya Bay.

The tour started early in the morning, and our mode of transport was a speedboat. The first stop was the famous Maya Bay, on Phi Phi Leh Island. This place has now become one of the  best things to do in Thailand after the famous movie “The Beach” starring Leonardo DiCaprio was filmed here.

No island tour was complete without enjoying some water activities. Our speedboat pulled into Phi Lee Bay, a bay that was surrounded by limestone cliffs. We jumped into the water and went for a swim and snorkel. We saw a ton of different fishes and corals, and our tour guide even said we could see leopard sharks, but we didn’t have any luck that day.

Around midday, we headed to Koh Phi Phi Don for a buffet lunch. It was a buffet-style lunch with a variety of delicious Thai food and international cuisine. It was much needed after a morning of activities.

After lunch, we visited Bamboo Island and Monkey Bay. Bamboo Island was perfect for sunbathing and more snorkeling, while Monkey Bay, true to its name, was home to a community of monkeys who seemed as curious about us as we were about them.

And finally, we headed back home on our speedboat, watching the gorgeous sunset dip behind the limestone mountains of the bay.

🐚 Pro tip >> This Phi Phi Islands tour starts at 8:00 am so you arrive at Maya Bay before the majority of other tourists.

Girl with long dark hair wearing a beige hat, blue bikini and white shirt standing at a viewpoint overlooking turquoise water and islets during a tour to Hong Island from Krabi.

Krabi is one of Thailand’s most popular beach destinations – for good reason! Sparkling turquoise waters and white sand beaches meet affordable cuisine and killer views in this sleepy Thai beach town. Whether you’re searching for culture, eats, or a great spot to sunbathe, a trip to Krabi is a welcome addition to any Thailand bucket list.

My friend and I visited Krabi in 2022 and we quite simply couldn’t get enough. When we weren’t stuffing our faces at the best Thai restaurants in Ao Nang , we were climbing almost 1,300 steps to the Tiger Cave Temple, sipping freshly made coconut smoothies on Railay Beach and embarking on day trips to the countless beautiful islands around Krabi.

One of our favorite day trips was this tour from Ao Nang to Hong Island . For only 40 USD/person (+ 300 baht for the national park fee), we got round-trip transportation from our hotel, transportation by longtail boat to multiple nearby islands, the use of snorkeling equipment, and a tasty lunch.

Our stop at Hong Island was the crowd favorite. We spent the most time there, bathing in the sparkling blue waters, climbing to the island’s highest viewpoint, and relaxing on the beautiful beach.

If you only have a few days in Krabi, I highly recommend taking this tour. The view of the limestone cliffs against the turquoise ocean is something I’ll never forget.

Kayaking on green water among the cliffs and mangroves, during one of the besr guided tours in Krabi, Thailand.

One of the best things we did during our trip to Thailand was to go kayaking through the mangrove forests in Krabi. This was an absolutely incredible experience; the forest was beautiful, we met some amazing people, and our guide was superb.

We did this as a combo tour with a dirt biking section as well, but I wasn’t overly impressed with the dirt biking part. It just felt like we were driving in circles and seemed a little silly. However, the kayaking was one of the highlights of our trip.

We booked our tour through a local tour guide in Krabi town, that way you can haggle with the tour guides and often get a better price. The guide then picked us up from our hotel near  Ao Nang , we changed into our life jackets and got into the kayaks.

The tour itself lasted about 2 hours. We sailed past beautiful cliff formations, waterlogged forests, and through a few beautiful lagoons. We even saw some wild monkeys! Our guide was able to explain all about the landscape, how the forest was formed, why the cliff faces were multi-colored, and about the wildlife that lives within the trees.

It was an incredible experience and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Krabi.

Best guided tours Krabi Thailand - View of the crystal clear emerald pool with mangrove roots and lush greenery.

This was another one of my favorite tours I did in Krabi, with a small group (we were only 5) and very knowledgeable guides. I joined this tour before I discovered the private Instagram tour I talked about above. I had never heard about the Emerald Pool and Blue Lagoon so if it wasn’t for this tour I would have missed both again.

I got picked up at my hotel in Ao Nang and headed to our first stop at the stunning Emerald Pool. From there we walked along the path to the next stop of the day, the Blue Lagoon. Enjoy this gorgeous gem surrounded by large, overhanging trees with roots that extend across the water.

We then took a break for lunch at a local restaurant, before we spent some time at the Hot Springs Waterfall. The tour ended with a visit to the majestic Wat Kaew Korawaram.

You’ll get a complimentary bottle of water, however, the lunch and any snacks you have to pay for yourself.

I really enjoyed both tours, even though they both covered the Emerald Pool and the white temple. If I had to choose I would probably go with the private Instagram tour , however, this one is the more affordable choice.

Hand holding a bowl of ingredients with people in red aprons standing in the background during a cooking class in Krabi. One of the best tour.

In my mind, no trip to SEA is complete without a cooking class. Thai is one of my favorite cuisines so when someone recommended this cooking class with professional chef Ye, I had to book it. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint.

I was picked up from my hotel in Ao Nang along with another couple. Before we started cooking we got an introduction to Thai food and all the rich colors, delicate aromas, and spices that go into making the perfect Thai dish.

Then we got to choose 6 dishes to cook. Pad Thai, Massaman Curry and Mango sticky rice, to name a few. My mouth is watering just from writing this. Learning how to balance flavors and make curry pastes from scratch using classic utensils and techniques was so much fun.

Definitely one of my favorite days in Thailand ever, just as good as the class I did in Bangkok .

Best guided tours in Krabi Thailand - Poda Island paradise beaches

This tour is jam-packed with beautiful places I would never have visited on my own. Travel by traditional longtail boat to Koh Poda, Chicken Island, Koh Tub, and Koh Mor, and stop at the beautiful Phra Nang Cave Beach at Railay.

Poda Island was my favorite stop, it is just breathtaking with the white sand and turquoise shallow water.

Bottled water, a Thai-style boxed picnic lunch on the beach, seasonal fruit and snorkeling equipment are included in the price, but you have to pay for the National Park entrance fee (200 THB per adult and 100 THB per child).

The boat was a little crowded, however, I wouldn’t expect anything else for the very reasonable price I paid. And it only meant I got to talk with a lot of lovely people. Our guides kept us entertained, hydrated and well-fed throughout the 6-7 hours.

Drone shot of couple on a green, white and orange kayak in the jungle of Krabi during a guided tour.

This afternoon tour begins with a convenient hotel pick-up in the Krabi area, followed by a journey to the stunning Ao Thalane (Thalane Bay), known for its enchanting mangrove forests.

Upon arrival at the kayak center, the friendly tour guide provided a concise yet thorough briefing on paddle usage, ensuring our safety. Equipped with life jackets and a dry bag for our valuables, we embarked on an unforgettable kayaking journey through the mangrove river.

If you’re a nature lover you will appreciate the opportunity to spot diverse wildlife, including monitor lizards, crab-eating macaques, monkeys, vibrant tropical birds, and mudskippers in the mud during low tide. The tranquility of paddling through the mangrove forests and caves without the usual crowds added to the overall serenity of the experience.

The highlight of the tour was undoubtedly the BBQ dinner on a private beach. We got lucky with the weather. The delicious seafood meal complete with sides, sauces and fresh fruit, was a perfect culmination of the day’s adventures.

Traditional Thai wooden boat at the beach in Krabi during a red and yellow sunset on a day trip from Krabi.

This sunset and seafood dinner cruise effortlessly encapsulated the essence of the region, featuring pristine white sand beaches, tropical islands, and awe-inspiring natural wonders.

I was picked up from my hotel in Ao Nang around 1:15 pm and boarded the ship at Ao Nam Mao Pier. We set sail for Pranang Cave, Chicken Island, and the picturesque Pirate Beach.

The crystal-clear waters and powdery white sand beaches provided a stunning backdrop for swimming and snorkeling. It was so much fun to see the vibrant coral reefs and abundance of tropical fish around Poda and Tub Islands.

After building up an appetite from all the time in the water, we enjoyed a Thai dinner consisting of fresh BBQ seafood on the deck with the sun setting over the ocean as the backdrop.

The best time to visit Krabi is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to April. During this period, the weather is more predictable, ensuring a pleasant experience for outdoor activities. But keep in mind that this is also peak tourist season.

Krabi boasts stunning landscapes, including limestone cliffs, pristine beaches, and lush jungles, making it an ideal setting for diverse guided tours.

All the islands just off the coast are what makes Krabi so special, and they are most easily visited as part of a guided tour. Activities like climbing and kayaking in the Mangroves are also best done accompanied by a local guide.

Krabi offers a variety of guided tours, including island hopping, snorkeling and diving excursions, jungle trekking, temple tours, street food tours and cooking classes , as well as adventure activities like rock climbing and kayaking.

Booking a guided tour in Krabi is easy. You can either book online through my favorite sites, Viator and GetYourGuide , use local tour operators and organizers, or ask you accommodation to arrange it for you.

If you want to save money on travel bookings you can often get a great deal if you contact the tour operator directly while you are in Krabi. However, then you also risk the tours already being full. I prefer to book in advance online, with Viator you can reserve the tour and pay later.

Yes, many guided tours in Krabi are family-friendly. There are options with gentle activities like island-hopping cruises, wildlife discovery tours, and easy nature walks that cater to all age groups.

Most of the tour mentioned in this post, apart from the rock climbing and kayaking, are suitable for families with small children. You might have to carry the little ones up the stairs to the Tiger Temple though.

It all depends on the type of tour you’re doing. But generally, I recommend you bring sunglasses, a hat, reef-safe sunscreen , light and comfortable clothing, swimwear (I love this swimsuit and this bikini ), insect repellent, and a camera. I used my GoPro the most while in Krabi.

For specific activities like trekking or rock climbing, just wear your normal summer hiking attire. Climbing shoes and gear are provided. Ask your tour company if you have any questions.

I also recommend bringing a filtered water bottle on all your travels, so you can fill it up anywhere.

My favorite filtered water bottle for travel, backpacking, hiking. LifeStraw Go Water Filter Bottle.

Yes, most guided tours in Krabi include English-speaking guides. In some cases, other languages may be available, depending on the tour operator. It’s always a good idea to check and confirm when booking. I have done five tours in Krabi and all my guides spoke great English.

Absolutely! I did all five tours as a solo traveler. Joining group tours is a great way to meet like-minded individuals, and many activities are designed to accommodate solo adventurers.

If you’re only here for a day, you’re going to want to get out of Krabi Town and get to the beach. So head to Ao Nang, which is essentially Krabi’s main beach. Here’s everything you need, so you don’t have to waste too much time traveling around.

You can beach bum, or if you’re a bit more adventurous, grab a kayak from the end of Ao Nang beach and kayak out to the crazy beautiful karsts jutting out of the water.

Walk along the beach towards the Last Fisherman Bar, just after, you’ll see someone renting kayaks by the hour. Kayak around the large karst rock on the left and find the tiny secret beach on the other side.

Grab a massage at the million and one places available in the area, and try some street food or eat at one of the many restaurants – Massaman House is excellent!

catching a sunset while chilling on ao nang in krabi, Thailand

For markets and nightlife…

Markets are better in Krabi Town, and the nightlife is better in Ao Nang (each town has both this is just “who is better”). The two are very easy to get to, so depending on what you like and how long you’re staying, you’ll need to decide where to go.

If you’re staying in Krabi Town, you can spend the day in Ao Nang, as mentioned above, and enjoy the night markets in Krabi Town. If you’re staying in Ao Nang, you can stay there for the nightlife, or head to Krabi Town for a wander around the night markets.

I’ll help you with getting around Krabi below.

Alternative : Should you want a quieter setting and beach, neighboring Nopparat Thara Beach is a good choice. If you want a taste of both, it’s possible. It’s a cheap songtaew (shared truck taxi thing) ride between there and Ao Nang.

Visiting the islands is one of the best things to do in Krabi! Krabi island hopping is an absolute must while you’re in the area and will take up most of your day. There are plenty of islands to go hopping on, the four island tour in Krabi is, you guessed it, a day of visiting four islands around Krabi.

Krabi island hopping is the best things to while visiting the area! This is Chicken Island.

I can’t lie; you’re not going to get the islands all to yourself unless you’re here during off or shoulder season (more info on that below), but it’s still an excellent tour, in my opinion. There’s no particular company to go with; they all offer mainly the same thing for the same price (around $15+ USD).

  • Click to see the best and most beautiful island tour in Krabi

Taking a tour is so cheap and easy, it’s a great thing to do in Krabi and it’s kind of a must! The beaches are gorgeous with white fluffy sand, crazy blue water, and limestone cliffs towering above you. A few of the islands have fun snorkeling too and the tour operators include the snorkel rental in the price.

I LOVE Railay Beach. Is it off-grid and quiet? Eh, not really. It’s certainly no secret, but it’s damn beautiful, so can you blame people for flocking here?

Railay beach is the best place to chill out while in krabi, thailand

It’s one of the prettiest and best places to visit in Krabi.

Railay West and Pranang Cave beach are the two gorgeous beaches here, the latter being the busiest of the two (mostly because it’s smaller, so it seems fuller).

Rock climbing here or on Tonsai (below) is also one of the best things to do in Krabi—literally, this area is a world-renowned area to go rock climbing, and it’s SO much fun (and cheap) to do.

  • Book the rock climbing tour I did in Railay. (no experience needed)
RELATED: Go Rock Climbing in Railay and Tonsai

On Railay you can visit the “penis cave” (yep, it’s a thing when you get to Pranang beach, you’ll see it), climb to the lagoon and the Railay viewpoint (a bit of a sketchy climb but so much fun if you’re up for an adventure), and try to spot dusky leaf monkeys (they are the cute and sweet monkeys, gray with black and white circles around their eyes).

I’d say Railay is my favorite thing to do in Krabi but then there’s Tonsai…

So, I love Railay, but I realllyyyy love Tonsai. It’s a more chill version of Railay, and a lot of people flock to Railay and disregard Tonsai (Woo! I win!), which is funny since it’s a 15-minute walk away from Railay. It has grown in popularity from my first visit seven years ago, but it’s still a favorite.

Tonsai possesses an incredibly picturesque beach with hippy reggae bars tucked into the jungle.

The beach is clear of pretty much everything but a couple of restaurants. Unfortunately, there are plans to put a resort right on the beach, but it’s a very slow-moving process, which is excellent news!

rock climbing on Tonsai Beach

Just like Railay, rock climbing here is like no other! I rock climbed on Railay and Tonsai , and while Tonsai is a bit more challenging, it’s my favorite.

If you want to know what to do in Krabi, I’d say Tonsai and Railay are two of the best places to chill out.

You can easily reach one and the other by walking for 15 minutes over a hill. When you’re on Railay, look at the beach, and to the right. Walk over that hill! If you’re on Tonsai, look at the beach and to the left and you’ll see the hill to walk over.

It’s an easy trail but DO NOT walk this trail at night.

Tonsai Beach is my favorite please to be in Krabi

Drive up to Tup Keak and spend the day beach bumming and climbing the mountain.

Curious to see what Krabi looks like from a birds-eye view?

That’s what you’ll get here. You’ll need to take a tuk tuk here and make them wait/come back to pick you up or ride your motorbike out here.

The hike provides some of the most incredible views you’ll experience on your Krabi itinerary as there aren’t too many options to get to viewpoints (rock climbing and Tiger Cave are one of the only other ways to get some great views.)

climbing tup keak for sunrise in krabi thailand

A round trip hike takes around 3-4 hours depending on how quick you hike and how long you spend at the top.

At the end of your hike, Tup Kek beach is a few minutes away, take a dip and chill for the rest of the day.

Grab a motorbike and visit Tiger Temple, a hot spring, the Emerland pool, and overall just get lost riding around.

Today is kind of a mix it up as you please kind of day. You could squeeze in probably two of the following activities in one day, maybe more if you go quick…

The Emerald Pool is a popular tourist spot; it’s undoubtedly beautiful, but depending when you go, the crowds make it less than desirable. Go early in the morning or later in the day to avoid the tour buses coming through.

Phanom Bencha National Park has a few waterfalls and some jungle trails to get lost in.

There are numerous hot springs around Krabi as well; however, due to the regularly hot weather, this type of activity is kept to the rainy days or the days where it’s not sweltering outside!

1 day tour krabi

For some more excellent views of Krabi and a full-on workout, man up and take on Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Sua). No worries, no tigers kept in cages or anything here, just a statue of one and over 1,000 steps to the top of a mountain to see as far over Krabi and you can.

Take a day trip to Ao Thalane and enjoy the area by kayaking. This isn’t that popular of a thing to do in Krabi so it’s usually not crowded around here.

Hope on a motorbike and head a bit north for a day at Ao Thalane. More incredible karst cliffs to admire, and you can spend the day out in a kayak going through mangroves and finding hidden beaches between the massive rock faces.

Kayaking is one of the best things to do in Krabi.

There are options to take a tour so you can explore more and glide through the mangrove forest. If you’re down to go off on your own, stick to the ocean side of Ao Thalane. Maneuvering the mangroves gets tricky, and you can get lost in there, and even worst, get caught out there when it’s low tide, don’t go in there without a guide!

  • Book this tour to Ao Thalane (you’ll want to book this tour if you don’t ride motorbikes as well since it offers a free pick up!)

One of the best things to do in Krabi is to just get lost.

Getting lost anywhere I visit in the world is my favorite thing to do. Krabi is no exception.

There are TONS of beaches to discover where few people go, but you need to stumble upon them by riding around on a motorbike. There are a few beaches I love in the Krabi area, but I have kept them off the blog (I’m allowed to keep SOME things to myself). I can tell you, though, you don’t have to wander too far to find some sweet hidden secrets.

Other notable spots if you have more time on your Krabi Itinerary:

  • Ao Luk – waterfalls, caves, kayaking
  • Phanom Bencha National Park – waterfalls and trails
  • Ao Namao and Klong Muang – other beaches
  • Pak Nam in Krabi Town – cave and boat ride
  • Wat Keaw – white temple
  • Nopparat Thara Beach – Quiet beach near Ao Nang.

A good Krabi itinerary includes island hopping!

Of course, should you want to venture off, Krabi is pretty big and offers up some islands that are further away from the main Krabi area.

Wander off to the lonely island of Koh Jum and relish in seclusion, put your party pants on and head to Koh Phi Phi or get the best of both worlds and spend some time on Koh Lanta.  I have more info on these spots on the links below!

Where to Stay in Krabi?

There are three main areas…

Either you’re in Krabi Town, Ao Nang, or on Railay or Tonsai.

With all of your choices for things to do in Krabi, this is going to be your call, I can’t help here. I don’t plan and create personalized itineraries 🙂

Visit this tower in Krabi Town.

As a rule of thumb:

For beach life and island hopping, you’re going to want to stay in Ao Nang or Tonsai and Railay.

For the things to do inland (the national park, waterfalls, Emerald Pool, etc) those would be a bit closer if you’re coming from Krabi Town.

If you have a flight the next day, particularly in the morning, ONLY stay in Krabi Town.

Below are some of my favorite spots, but you can read more about where to stay in Krabi here .

Blue Juice Guesthouse is simple and inviting with an on-site restaurant, for an enjoyable dining experience. It has a total of 7 rooms, all filled with a range of amenities for a pleasant stay. The location is ideally placed next to the river and the night market

Ao Nang Cliff Beach Resort is a beautiful modern resort with a large infinity swimming pool and gym. Rooms offer a beautiful view of the hills and within proximity are a wide range of eating options.

Railay Viewpoint Resort … the name says it all, this resort offers panoramic views of the ocean, includes a pool and a sun deck. It also includes a restaurant and bar, with sightseeing attractions within just walking distance.

Tonsai Bay Resort offers villas with private balconies are set between the cliffs and the ocean at Tonsai Beach. It’s a great location for enjoying outdoor activities.

June to October is a bit of a gamble to visit Krabi. You will likely experience rainy days and weather going as far as torrential downpours. November to May is sunnier and drier, and also the busiest months to visit Krabi.

If you want the best months to visit Krabi in my opinion, I’d have to say, April-May (some of the hottest months) or November.

Of course, this is a bit of speculation on my part as I don’t have a crystal ball that tells me the weather for your exact dates (so let’s refrain from commenting things like, “what the weather going to be like this August!?)

Wandering around krabi by boat is a must do!

You can check what the weather in Krabi is right now but these months are my recommendation because…

  • They are shoulder season months. The weather in Krabi is often pretty decent but not perfect.
  • Things will be cheaper!

The weather, now more than ever, is very fickle and can change at any time. Crazily enough, the climate differs drastically around the entire country. So if you’re planning to visit other parts of Thailand, you’ll need to do your research to time everything the best you can.

A rule of thumb is to aim between high and low seasons for anywhere you go. (aka shoulder season)

When you’re contemplating the best time to visit Krabi, keep in mind that shoulder season doesn’t mean rain all day! Rainy season doesn’t mean rain all day every day either.

If you go just before or just after the rainy season, there’s no need to be afraid that you’re going to get rained out.

More often than not, the rain happens for a small period, and you get sun for the rest of the day, which isn’t a bad deal! Mainly because it sometimes even happens like clockwork – you can almost predict when it’s going to rain each day.

Things to do in krabi and island hop

If you’re after the best time to visit Krabi and you run into some unfavorable weather, worst-case scenario, you cuddle up with a great book, get a massage and gorge yourself with amazing Thai food. Not a bad day, I’d say!

These shoulder season months are also unpredictable, and you could have an entire week of sunshine. On the other hand, if you get unlucky, it could be a week with mostly overcast and rainy weather. It’s certainly a gamble, but it can pay off.

Side note for visiting Krabi in April: This goes for the entire country, but keep in mind this is one of the hottest months of the year for the country and also when they celebrate their New Year, Songkran. It’s an incredibly fun festival to participate in; it’s the largest water fight in the world! Just be aware when coming to visit. Places can book out early, arriving with bags during the festival would be a pain, and costs can go up.

TRANSPORTATION TIP

If you’re looking for bus, boat, or train tickets around Asia, you can easily book them online! Check Availability

How to Get Around Krabi

If you’re flying in, just after baggage claim, there is a bus that will take you to Krabi Town or Ao Nang—it’s very obvious and easy to find.

If you’re getting off at the bus station, grab a songtaew (shared taxi truck thing), and it will take you to the center of Krabi Town or Ao Nang—Again, very easy and obvious!

Songtaews are the main form of transport between Krabi Town and Ao Nang, and they are reliable, cheap (around 50B one way), and easy to ride. Just outside of the 711 near Vogue Mall is the central meeting spot for the songtaew in Krabi Town. This songtaew will take you to Ao Nang.

Typical karst rocks in the Krabi area.

Just outside of the Tanta Restaurant in Ao Nang, you’ll find the songtaew that heads back to Krabi Town. (You’ll see a sign that says “bus”)

The other option is renting a motorbike, but be careful. They are dangerous, and people are dumb on them. The road between Ao Nang and Krabi Town is a major highway. People go fast, and large trucks use this road too.

It is HIGHLY recommended that you avoid riding between the two towns at night—it’s dangerous, and sometimes tourists are found in an awful position where they are targeted for theft while on a motorbike… Yes, it’s happened.

DON’T ride a tuk tuk alone between Krabi Town and Ao Nang at night, mainly if you are a solo female. Make sure when you go out at night that you’re in the same town as your hotel.

Krabi Town and Ao Nang are very safe to travel between, but at night it can get sketchy.

From Krabi Town – You can easily go to the pier (near Blue Juice Guesthouse) and get a water taxi to the east side of Railay.

From Ao Nang, just get a boat ticket right on the beach . These boats will either take you to Tonsai or to Railay West.

The Ao Nammao pier will also have boats that go to Railay and Tonsai.

Taking a boat ride to get to Tonsai or Railay is a fun thing to do in Krabi.

All rides will take around 20-25 or so minutes depending on which pier you leave from. Yes, you will be on a longtail boat, yes, it can be a bit choppy, yes, you may get splashed a bit, and yes, the leaking at the bottom of the boat is normal.

Ao Nang is the party place. Center Point is a big area with a lot of bars, and then there are random reggae bars along the main road to the right (when the beach is behind you).

In Krabi Town, there isn’t anything crazy, but I liked it more for that reason. There are some chill bars off Chaofa Road like FuBar and Playground or a few others scattered around like Deep Lounge.

Krabi is a safe place, but getting sloppily wasted anywhere and walking home is a bad idea, so be safe!

Hello Nina! Thanks for this itinerary. It’s been pretty helpful to narrow down my plans for Krabi. I’ll be visiting mid-Jan 2020. My plan so far is one night in Ao Nang, two in Railay and two in Phi Phi, but it is flexible. Does this sound too rushed? For more context, this is my very first solo trip abroad and I’m equal parts anxious and excited. Please let me know what you think of this and what would you suggest.

It’s a bit rushed. It will take at least half a day to get to Phi Phi depending on the route/mode of transport. I prefer chill spots so I’d skip it, it’s overrated but that’s just me! If you only have the five days and that’s it, I’d do Ao Nang, Railay, Tonsai – add in an island-hopping day somewhere in there, do a few mainland activities on another, that leaves you with three days to explore, beach bum, do things in the towns, etc.

Hi, thanks for the tip! So now I’m considering Ao Nang and Railay-Tonsai. Is staying for one night enough to see Ao Nang so I get three nights in Railay?

Just want to say a huge thank you for your info! As a solo traveler and for the first time here, this is exactly what I was looking for!! Really helped to figure out what to do.

Yay! Glad it was helpful, Jenna. Have fun!

How hard of a hike is Tup Keak? We’ll both be wearing our little ones (1 year old and 3 year old) in carriers. Would it be a difficult trek with them?

Sorry, not sure what it’s like hiking with kids. It’s not THAT hard of a hike. I also don’t know what “carrier” means but you’d def need those backpacks or something, you can’t do anything handheld, it’s too long and uphill.

Really, so amazing Krabi 1-7 Island tour experience that you have shared here & I think you have enjoyed a lot by visiting this fantastic Island. As I have already seen this Krabi 4-Island during Phuket trip. This excellent trip was arranged by my father as he made this beautiful tour plan with Boat Lagoon Cruises Co. Ltd for which I got my trip so interesting as well as so exciting also for me.

I am about travel to Krabi mid July. Where you would suggest me to stay ?

Did you read my post on where to stay that I mentioned in the post? That should help!

I am travelling solo travelling to krabi on 1 to 3rd Oct 2019. If want join with me. Please drop a mail over [email protected]

Wow. This is so thorough! I’m sitting on the ferry now from Koh Phangan, heading to Krabi. It was pretty rainy in KP, so I’m hoping it’ll be a bit better in and aroun Krabi.

Did you end up diving at all while in Krabi?

I didn’t. Glad it was helpful 🙂 Enjoy Krabi!

How far is Ao Nang from Krabi Town? Fab blog, thankyou!

Really helpful! Thank you 🙂

Nicely put, Nina Ragusa 🙂 Am definitely using the info in this post for my trip 🙂

Hi Nina, I will be joining my husband on a trip to Singapore in late october and after his meetings, we are planning on heading up to this area. Quick question for you. In some of your posts, you mentioning hiking as well as rock climbing in the same post. Does this mean that on the same hike, there could be some rock climbing? If so, how experienced do you need to be and what kind of equipment would be required? We have done lots of hiking, scrambles, etc, and are adventurous but never any actual rock climbing. Would appreciate any advice. Thanks. Viv

Not really. The rock climbing might involve a short hike but otherwise, the other hike or two I mention are separate.

thank you very much for the information.

Thanks for all your info on Krabi will be staying at one of your suggested hotels.

Great, Lisa! 🙂 Enjoy!

Thank you for all the valuable information! this is super helpful in planning my upcoming trip to Thailand. Love your blog! Lina @ SheLikesTravel

Thanks Lina! Have a great time!

Hi, Thank you so much for your post. I will be visiting Krabi September end, next month. It will be 2 of us, wanted to know what kind of expense should we expect per day? (food+alcohol+travel+island tour+maybe kayaking and rock climbing etc.) Excluding stay (We have booked our stay at Ao Nang)

Whats the possibility of going on the speed boat from Krabi to phi phi or a couple of islands and then go to phuket in a span of 2 days?

Sounds awful and extremely rushed. I wouldn’t do it even if there was an option. I’m also not a fan of Phuket and would say to stay in Krabi area and skip Phuket.

If we plan to follow your 7 days itinerary, where do you recommend us to stay (which area)? Do you recommend staying in one place or move around to stay in several areas? Thank you in advance.

Probably Ao Nang would be best, and if you go to Railay/Tonsai area you can stay there. If you rent a motorbike, you can stay almost anywhere and have tons of freedom but if you don’t, Ao Nang would prob make the most sense for the majority of your time. You can check this out too – https://whereintheworldisnina.com/where-to-stay-in-krabi-thailand-any-budget/

Me and my friends are going down to Krabi next month and we still can’t finalize our itinerary for our one week trip. Thank God, I stumble upon your blog and saw this post. I have sent this to my friends and they were actually happy to see this cause we have new ideas on where to go and what to do in Krabi.

Great, thanks!

Holidaying Phuket want day trip to Krabi and reurn 12-22 August 2018 any day stay approx 3 hours Krabi and return 4 – 6 persons

Any cool hotel reviews ? I love to read and sometimes share reviews about unique properties. Thailand has so many awesome experiences. Great itinerary by the way.

Thanks did you read this? https://whereintheworldisnina.com/where-to-stay-in-krabi-thailand-any-budget/

Couldn’t agree with you more when you said that Railay Beach is really beautiful. No doubt why lots of locals and tourists are coming here to spend their vacation. I instantly fell in love with this place the moment I set my feet on the shore and if only I can live here for a month, I’d definitely do so.

Nice itinerary very helpfull By the way i want to visit Emerald pool and hot spring 4 islands Phi phi island Morakot cave Where should i stay for the best location ? Krabi town or ai nang beach And how much does it cost if i want to use private long boat for maybe 4-6persons Thanks a lot

Thanks for the comment Bobby. I have no idea the cost of the boat as it depends how many people are actually going, what islands, what season, who you ask etc. Please ask a long tail boat driver when you arrive. As I mentioned it the post, depending on how many people, it shouldn’t be much more than a tour. Ao nang = the beach Krabi town = the town, not the beach This may help: https://whereintheworldisnina.com/where-to-stay-in-krabi-thailand-any-budget/

Thanks so much for your itinerary! I’m heading to Krabi and surrounding areas in a few weeks and can’t wait!

Awesome! Have a great time. You’re welcome 🙂

Where To Stay in Krabi for a Week

I’d recommend, Ao Nang as it’s a tourist hub with a wide range of accommodations , restaurants, and entertainment options.

It’s a convenient base for exploring the nearby islands and attractions. Here you will find luxurious resorts, mid-range hotels, and budget-friendly guesthouses.

Railay Beach is a peninsula, only accessible by boat because there are no roads from Krabi town to Railay. It offers a more secluded and laid-back feel compared to Ao Nang, it can make sightseeing and getting around a little more difficult so i’d only recommend staying here if you just want a week of chilling out and sunbathing.

If you’d prefer a more authentic Thai experience, then I’d suggest Krabi Town. It’s the provincial capital and offers a local vibe with its markets, street food, and cultural attractions. It’s a better area for sightseeing another with Ao Nang.

Best Time to Visit for a Week

If blue skies and sunny days and low levels of rain are what you’re looking for, I’d suggest visiting during the dry season. It’s considered the best time to visit Krabi, which typically runs from November to April.

Keep in mind this is also the busiest time of year and will be packed with tourists (okay, it’s not that bad but there might be a lo more people around). Accommodation prices are going to be higher during this time as well.

I prefer the wet season which typically runs from May to October. personally, October is my favourite time to visit Krabi (and Phuket!). There are more likely to have short bursts of heavy rain or evening showers.

You can definitely still enjoy sunny days during the wet season, but, you are more likely to experience overcast grey skies (not ideal for photos) and a higher chance of rain.

Day 1: Arrival in Krabi – Explore Ao Nang

Upon arrival at Krabi International Airport, you will be greeted by the warm Thai hospitality. Head to your hotel to drop your bags off, it’s time to get your adventure on!

Explore Ao Nang Beach, an area filled with shops, restaurants, and beachside bars. Stroll along the sandy shore, enjoy the sea breeze, and dip your toes into the warm Andaman Sea.

If you have arrived in Krabi in the morning, then grab a delicious lunch at one of the local Thai eateries or beachfront restaurants, to fuel you up for the rest of the afternoon.

After lunch, take a walk through the streets of Ao Nang and check out the little shops that sell souvenirs, beachwear, or local handmade gifts. If you’re feeling a little adventurous, rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard and explore the coastline.

As sunset approaches, make your way to Ao Nang beach and watch as the setting sun over the ocean. Krabi has some of the prettiest sunsets in Thailand (in my opinion anyway).

After sunset, you can either head back to the main area and choose from a number of dining options on the beach or REEVE Beach Club for a luxe dining experience.

After dinner, if you still have energy, you can continue to enjoy the nightlife in Ao Nang. Either visit a beach bar and sip on a yummy tropical cocktail, listen to live music, or even join a beachside fire show for an unforgettable evening.

Paradise Railay beach Sea and limestone Krabi Thailand

Day 2: Island Hopping

Hopefully you didn’t party too hard last night because today, you’ll be waking up early for a day of island hopping! Make sure to fuel up with a yummy breakfast at your hotel before starting your adventure. If you’re tour picks you up before breakfast starts, most hotels can arrange a box breakfast for you to take with you – all you need to do is ask.

Make sure to pack your reef safe sunscreen as you join a full-day island-hopping tour by longtail boat , which will take you to some of the most famous and picturesque islands in the area. You’ll start with a visit to Phi Phi Islands, which are known for their stunning beauty and crystal-clear waters. The movie “The Beach” with the droll worthy (in his hay day!) Leonardo Dicaprio, which was filled on Ko Phi Phi Le.

You’ll get to explore Phi Phi Leh and the famous Maya Bay from the movie. Here you can check out the island and go for a swim. If you’re travelling during the high season, the beach will likely be packed with people. Head inland, it will be a lot quieter and the scenery is really pretty.

From there, you’ll continue to Bamboo Island, a small island with white sandy beaches and a great spot to go snorkelling. Here you’ll get enjoy a delicious lunch either on the beach or served on board the boat.

After lunch, head to Phi Phi Don, the larger of the Phi Phi Islands. Here you can explore the local village, relax on the beaches, or go snorkelling, the afternoon is your time to enjoy, just don’t fall asleep on the beach and miss the boat (like I did!).

On your way back to Krabi, they will likely make a stop at Pileh Lagoon, an emerald green lagoon surrounded by towering limestone cliffs. Where you can enjoy your final swim for the day before heading back to Krabi.

Once you get back, if you have the energy head out for dinner by the beach or if I were you, I’d grab some room service and enjoy Netflix and relaxing in bed.

Maya Bay in the Phi Phi Islands Krabi

Day 3: Railay Beach and Rock Climbing

Yesterday was a little crazy hey! Don’t worry today you can relax and rejuvenate and add in some rock climbing if you have the energy. You’re headed to Railay Beach, a peninsula only accessible by boat.

Side note: I’d recommend booking a hotel in Railay for the night so you don’t have to try rush back for the last ferry. Head back to Krabi tomorrow.

Either hire a longtail boat or jump on the ferry from Ao Nang to Railay Beach. The ferry goes along this route 3 times a day, it is cheaper but you need to make sure to keep an eye on your time. You can always catch he ferry there and a long tail boat back.

If you’re feeling adventurous, consider trying your hand at rock climbing. Railay is very well known for its world-class rock climbing routes. Join a guided rock climbing session they will provide you with all the gear and show you the best routes based on your experience. Or you can rent a kayak and paddle through the mangroves or around the limestone cliffs to explore hidden coves and beaches.

If you prefer a more relaxed day, then sit back and unwind on the beach, sunbathe, or go for a swim. Railay Beach is really beautiful and because of this, it can get fairly crowded, so try to get there earlier in the morning, that way, you can grab the best spot on the beach.

If you get bored of relaxing (you monster haha!), go for a wander and check out the different sections of Railay Beach. I’d recommend a visit to Phra Nang Cave Beach, which is well known as a cave filled with phallic-shaped stalactites.

After sunset, head back to the main area of Railay Beach, where you can find plenty of places to grab some dinner. Indulge in a delicious seafood dinner, some local Thai cuisine, or international dishes at one of the beachfront restaurants.

If you’re up for some evening entertainment, Railay has a great nightlife scene with live music, fire shows, or you can relax at a beach bar.

Tomorrow’s gonna be another busy one, get a good nights rest and get your walking shoes ready!

Cliff at the Railay peninsula in Krabi, Thailand

Day 4: Krabi Town and Tiger Cave Temple

Head back to the main part of Krabi on the ferry or via longtail board. You’ll explore Krabi Town, the Thai markets and cultural attractions in the area.

Begin your day at the morning market, where you can immerse yourself in the local culture and enjoy the smell of fresh produce, local Thai delicacies, and buy some handmade goodies.

After exploring the market, it’s time to visit the iconic Wat Tham Sua, also known as the Tiger Cave Temple . The temple is located in a forest setting and gets its name from a tiger paw print found in the cave.

Grab your walking shoes and a big bottle of water, because you’ll be climbing the 1,237 steps to get to the summit, passing beautiful Buddhist shrines along the way. The climb can be a little challenging in the heat, but the views from the top are absolutely worth it – so keep going! I know you can do it!

Take your time to explore the temple complex, the statues, the golden Buddha images, and intricate carvings. You can also participate in a meditation session or ask for a blessing from the resident monks. Note for women , you cannot be alone with a monk and please do not touch them, even if its to get their attention.

After descending from the temple, head back to Krabi Town and treat yourself to a well-deserved traditional Thai massage. Once you’re nice and relaxed, explore the lantern lit streets of Krabi Town and visit the night market. Here you can try out delicious street food, such as pad Thai, grilled seafood, spicy curries, pork balls on a stick (my personal favourite) and yummy Thai desserts.

The top of Tiger Cave temple, (Wat Tham Suea), Krabi region, Thailand

Day 5: Four Islands Tour and Sunset Cruise

Today, you’ll be heading out on another full-day adventure; the Four Islands Tour , which will take you to some of the most stunning islands such as Tup Island, Chicken Island, Poda Island and Koh Poda Island.

Your first stop will be Tup Island, a small, picture-perfect tropical paradise (truly!). During low tide, a sandbar emerges, connecting Tup Island with neighboring islands, creating an area for you to walk between the islands, that gives the illusion that you’re “walking on water”

Next, head to Chicken Island, named after its unique rock formation that resembles a chicken’s head. Here you’ll enjoy a picnic lunch served on the boat or on one of the nearby islands.

After lunch, visit Poda Island, known for its long sandy beach and super clear waters. Relax on the beach, go for a swim or snorkel, or soak up the sun while appreciating the views of the cliffs that dot the horizon.

Finally, you’ll head back to Railay Beach and Phra Nang Cave. You’ll get to see the limestone cliffs that frame the beach and chill out on the beach. You can swim, sunbathe, or explore the nearby caves. If you didn’t get to see the caves on day 3, this is your chance.

Alternatively, M/Y Lalida Sunset Dinner Cruise in Krabi or 7 Islands Sunset Tour in Thailand with Dinner , stop off/swing by the above islands AND offer a sunset dinner. They start around 1-2pm sp you can see these islands and have a sunset dinner, if you would rather spend the morning lounging by the pool or sleeping in.

Day 6: Emerald Pool and Hot Springs

Day 6 consists of a day trip to the enchanting Khao Phra Bang Khram Nature Reserve , where you’ll visit the famous Emerald Pool (Sa Morakot) and natural hot springs.

Travel to the Khao Phra Bang Khram Nature Reserve, located approximately 70 kilometers from Ao Nang. The trip here, takes you through scenic landscapes of forests and towering mountains. Once you arrive at the nature reserve, make your way to the Emerald Pool. It is a natural, freshwater pool famous for its mesmerizing green colour water (it looks more appealing than it sounds).

The pool is naturally fed by hot springs, which gives it, its unique colour and it is also said to have healing properties. After enjoying the Emerald Pool, take a short walk through the jungle to reach the nearby natural hot springs. Let the soothing heat relax your muscles and revitalise your mind, body and soul in this relaxing environment.

If time permits, you can visit the nearby Khlong Thom Waterfall, which is actually a hot spring waterfall, with water temperatures of 40-50 degrees Celsius.

For lunch, the tour organisers will either set up a picnic in, or you’ll head to a local restaurant to sample traditional dishes from the area.

Krabi has a significant Muslim population, and there are several Muslim villages in the area. These villages offer a look into Islamic culture, traditions, and architecture. During the afternoon, you could explore mosques, observe locals practicing their faith, and perhaps even have the opportunity to try some traditional Muslim cuisine, if you’re still hungry.

Day 7: Scenic Kayaking OR An ATV Adventure

Unfortunately, today is your last day in Krabi! Your Thai adventure has almost come to an end, so the last thing to do is to join a guided kayaking tour that will take you through the mangrove forests. You’ll see a completely different side of Krabi, paddling along calm waters, immersing yourself in the beauty of the natural surroundings.

Discover hidden lagoons, caves, and channels, where you might get to see some wildlife that inhabits the mangrove ecosystem. Keep an eye out for birds, monkeys, and other creatures that call this area home.

Take a break from kayaking (you worked hard paddling!) and head to a secluded beach, where you can relax, swim, and snorkel.

You’ve been around a lot of water during your time in Krabi, so if you’re prefer a land based adventure, try out an ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) through the landscapes of Krabi.

Follow your experienced guide as they lead you through a variety of tracks, including forests, rubber plantations, and muddy paths. Depending on the tour you choose, you may also get to go white water rafting and zip-lining !

Final Thoughts:

Krabi is the ultimate adventure filled nature getaway. It’s unbelievably beautiful, has islands and limestone cliffs that come right out of the clear blue waters. It offers delicious Thai cuisine and has incredible views.

Trust me when I say, you won’t regret spending a week in Krabi, as soon as you get home, you’ll be planning your next trip back.

Using this itinerary, Krabi can be a busy trip or you can add in a few days of relaxation, it’s completely up to you! I hope you have found this itinerary helpful!

PEOPLE'S 24 Hour Food Tour: Chicago

It may be known as the Second City, but Chicago is second to none when it comes to a memorable and diverse food scene. We pick the best places to eat in one delicious day

Writer Ari Bendersky has covered Chicago’s dining scene for nearly 20 years. From serving as founding editor of Eater Chicago to writing for many local and national publications (including WSJ magazine, New York Times, and Food & Wine) to launching his own Substack newsletter, Something Glorious , he continues to deliver the goods on where to eat, what wine and spirits to drink, and what’s happening in the lives of some of the world’s top chefs.

Chicago is inarguably one of the top culinary destinations in the U.S. From its legendary humbler fare (Chicago-style pizza and the requisite Chicago hot dog "dragged through the garden") to on-the-rise young chefs cooking the food of their cultures to some of the most lauded high-end cuisine in the country (there’s a reason the annual James Beard Foundation Awards are held here each year), there's something for everyone within the city limits.

That, of course, makes it almost impossible to put together an itinerary for a visitor looking to try the best of the city's eats in just one day. In fact, narrowing down your options might be some of the toughest decisions you ever make, up there with "Do I go to a top college to study engineering or go straight to work in a hot tech company?" and "Is a ticket to see Taylor Swift more important than covering my rent this month?"

Like we said, these aren't easy decisions, but you have to make the choice and just go with it. From breakfast to dinner to a late-night indulgence, Chicago has more options than you have time, so choose wisely — ideally with some guidance from those of us who take this "research" seriously. Here are our picks for where to dine during one day in one of the country’s best food cities.

Breakfast: Tiztal Cafe

Tiztal Cafe

No matter where you’re staying, grab a rideshare or hop on the “L” train and head to Uptown to this super cute Latin women-owned gem. Yes, you can get pancakes, scrambled eggs or an omelet, but Tiztal’s Mexican breakfast, especially the chilaquiles, is why you come here. Made with fresh crisp tortillas and green salsa, the dish gets topped with warm baked chihuahua cheese and cilantro (go extra and top it with steak and eggs, their specialty). Or opt for the huevos rancheros or chorizo scramble. But if you want simple eggs, be sure to ask for some pico de gallo and tortillas on the side. Pro tip: if it’s warm out, ask to sit on their recently renovated hidden backyard patio filled with Mexican art.

Lunch: Lula Cafe

Kyle Kissel

A mainstay in Chicago’s culinary world, Lula Cafe has been serving some of the best lunch (and let’s not forget dinner) for 25 years. The restaurant is led by chef/owner Jason Hammel, a multiple James Beard Award nominee and champion of the farm to table movement. Lula elevates brunch — you can order off the full brunch and lunch menu between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. — while remaining utterly cozy.

Keep it simple with buttermilk pancakes, or opt for a perfectly cooked French omelet filled with butternut squash, ricotta, and pear mostarda that’s served with a petit salad of local greens. Or go for baked French feta with marinated olives and a punchy jalapeño basil oil; the classic Lula ‘99 turkey sandwich layered with avocado, lettuce, and chili oil; or this writer’s favorite warming chickpea and fennel tagine with spiced green harissa and sweet golden raisins. Your table might be about to buckle after ordering everything that sounds delicious, but you should also treat yourself to one of their brunch cocktails — you’re on vacation, right?

Sweet Treat: Mindy’s Bakery

Aliza J Sokolow

After winning a James Beard Award for outstanding pastry chef, running a successful restaurant, and launching a massively successful edible cannabis brand, what’s left for Mindy Segal to do? Open her namesake bakery. Set in Wicker Park, Mindy’s Bakery sees people lining up early for an array of baked goods pulling from European and Middle Eastern traditions. Her housemade bagels and bialys are a huge draw, but if you're indulging an afternoon sweet tooth, you can’t pass up a twice-baked almond croissant, hot fudge glazed donuts, marbled sour cream coffee cake with cocoa nib streusel, and the smattering of hot-out-the-oven cookies, bars, brioche tarts, and cakes.

(Bonus pick: If you're here on a hot day and need to chill out, check out Pretty Cool Ice Cream , with locations in Logan Square and Lincoln Park, for inventive ice cream pops from award-winning pastry chef Dana Cree.)

Dinner: Shaw’s Crab House

Lettuce Entertain You Restaurants

There are any number of newer hotspots we could send you to (some recent favorites include Maxwells Trading , Obelix , Brasero , or Daisies — and frankly, if you have more time, definitely go to any one of these). But for a true "classic Chicago" dinner out, the city's 40-year mainstay Shaw’s Crab House is a fun stop with something for everyone.

It's two restaurants in one – the more formal dining room that throws back to the Rat Pack era and a casual and boisterous oyster bar. You can get steak or chicken, but it is a "crab house," after all, so definitely indulge in some of its popular seafood. Start with a dozen oysters flown in fresh from around North America. Move on to jumbo lump crab cakes or a cup of creamy New England clam chowder. Then settle in for seared Alaskan halibut, a lobster roll, or chilled stone crab claws (when in season).

Late Night Snack: The Wiener's Circle

Gabriella Zammuto

When you want a side of sass with your Chicago dog, head to the infamous Wiener's Circle . With a counter team known for dishing out fiery insults to an often drunk late-night (and even daytime) crowd, Wiener’s Circle has all the classic Chicago hot dog stand staples: Chicago dogs, char cheddar burgers, char Polish, cheddar fries, and more.

You might also get a side of a celeb sighting with your ketchup-free dog: Ed Sheeran has served food from behind the counter; Eagles center Jason Kelce arrived to find the restaurant’s sign reading “Welcome Taylor's Boyfriends Brother” (and gave back as good as he got), and global DJ Marshmello recently performed from the rooftop. This spot is definitely a vibe.

Spot a Celeb At: RPM Steak

Lindsay Eberly / Lettuce Entertain You Restaurants

This Chicago steakhouse, located in the heart of busy River North, has long been a beacon for the rich and famous. That should come as no surprise, since RPM Steak is owned in part by Bill and Giuliana Rancic.

Recent visitors include Chris Rock, Sophia Bush, Mariah Carey, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and they’re not just coming for its welcoming hospitality. It’s all about the food and drinks here.

The draw is the nearly 20 steak options like the 28-day dry-aged, 16-ounce New York Strip and four cuts of Japanese wagyu (priced per ounce) you can pair with decadent sauces and butters like black truffle bearnaise or king crab Oscar. But the giant seafood towers, warm Parker House rolls, spicy miso lobster, and whole roasted Dover sole add to the appeal. The extensive and impressive wine list? The cherry on top of it all.

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The 36-hole cut at the Masters is different than any other major championship. The 89-man field will be cut to the low 50 and ties after 36 holes is completed.

Thursday’s first round was suspended due to darkness after the start of play was delayed more than two hours by morning storms. The second round is expected to begin on schedule at 8 a.m., however.

The cut was first instituted in 1957, 23 years after the Masters began. The field was cut to the low 40 and ties from 1957-61, but the cut changed the next year with the institution of the 10-shot rule. From 1962-2012, the field was cut to the low 44 and ties, as well as anyone within 10 strokes of the leader.

Over the following seven years, the 36-hole cut was expanded to the low 50 and ties, as well as anyone within 10 strokes of the leader. The 10-shot rule was done away with in 2020, however, and now the low 50 and ties qualify for the final 36 holes at the Masters.

Scottie Scheffler wins 2024 Masters Tournament for 2nd win in 3 years

By Emily Mae Czachor

Updated on: April 14, 2024 / 10:00 PM EDT / CBS News

Scottie Scheffler secured his second Masters Tournament  victory in three years on Sunday, finishing 11 under and four strokes up on his closest competitors.

The 27-year-old American was tied with Ludvig Aberg, Max Homa and Collin Morikawa coming into the eighth hole before the world no. 1 hit three straight birdies to take the lead for good. Aberg ended up placing second in his debut at the Masters.

Scheffler has been ranked No. 1 in the world for more than two years now and also won the 2022 Masters tournament, which was his first major championship win.

The Masters - Final Round

The tournament was marked by unruly weather and at least one history-making moment. Golf icon and returning Masters champion Tiger Woods opened the tournament's last leg with his 100th round at the major.

The Masters Tournament is an invitational event held yearly at the Augusta National Golf Club, a private golf course in Augusta, Georgia. Since its establishment in 1934, the tournament has grown to become one of the four most important championships in men's professional golf. The tournament typically takes place during the first week of April, so they are the first major event of every season, followed by the PGA Championships, the U.S. Open and the Open Championship, which are usually held in May, June and July, respectively.

Scheffler and Morikawa held first and second on the 2024 Masters leaderboard , in that order, heading into the fourth round, on Sunday. They teed off in the afternoon as the last pairing of the day. Xander Schauffele and Bryson DeChambeau also began their play in a featured afternoon slot, with DeChambeau in fifth place on the leaderboard and Schauffele in sixth at the start of the round.

Spanish golfer Jon Rahm , the 29-year-old who won the Masters tournament last year, returned to the course Sunday to defend his title, although his performances during the preceding rounds this weekend meant he was no longer competing to win. Woods had fallen out of contention, too, by the tournament's last day. After making his 24th consecutive cut on Friday, which was a new record at the championship, the star golfer went on to shoot a personal worst during the next and third round. At 48, Woods is a decorated golfing champion with five previous wins at the Masters. He teed off Sunday morning with the 23-year-old amateur Neal Shipley, commencing his 100th Masters round.

Masters Golf

Scheffler will receive a huge cash prize in addition to the traditional green jacket, which is given to the Masters winner each year. The overall purse for the 2024 Masters is $20 million, setting a new record-high and jumping $2 million from last year's prize fund.

The champion this year will receive $3.6 million from the purse, which is also a new record and up from the $3.2 million payout that Rahm received for his Masters win in 2023. What remained of the total $18 million purse in that case was divided among 50 golfers who participated in the tournament, with their individual scores determining how much prize money they were eventually awarded.
