Review of a David Urquhart Coach Tour of the Scottish Highlands

When my sister outlined her plans for my mum’s secret *****-ith birthday (censored information) trip, a David Urquhart Travel coach trip around the Scottish Highlands with a three night stay in Mackay’s Hotel in Strathpeffer, my first thoughts were ‘this is not my idea of a holiday’. However, sharing our pain was my mother, sister, her boyfriend, his mother and three nephews in their 20s (one with his German girlfriend who is a fan of all things Scottish).

Transportation to Strathpeffer After a night in the Thistle Hotel in Glasgow we meet up with the extended family to join the coach at Buchanan Street Bus Station at 9.30am. The coach had three more pick up points, Hamilton, Paisley and east Kilbride, before we headed north. It was full and whilst most of the passengers were in the 60+ age bracket, there were also a few slightly younger people including a couple in their 20s. We were allocated the whole of the back seats area – it felt like being the rowdy party on the school bus.

The trip north was a long one. The plus points were that we could relax, catch up with each other and enjoy scenery that grew ever more dramatic and breathtaking by the mile. The downside was that the tape of an Irish comedian played by the driver was appalling – but had my mum in stitches of laughter. By her own admission, she’s easily pleased.

We stopped off, bizarrely, at a garden centre for lunch at 11.30. Too early for us but it allowed me to stock up on haggis pie, scotch pie and a pork pie from the centre’s pile-on-the-pounds inducing Scottish deli whilst my nephew took the opportunity to bag his first tablet bar .

Mackay’s Hotel, Strathpeffer Somewhere after 4pm we reached Strathpeffer and Mackay’s Hotel . Andy and I had an attic room. It was decent enough with tea and coffee making facilities and a great view of Strathpeffer’s main street. The only downside was that the shower needed some fine adjustments before we could find the right mix of power and temperature – this was only achieved on the last day.

Dinner in Mackay’s Hotel, Strathpeffer There were two sittings for dinner (6.30 and 7.00pm).  The waitresses in the restaurant were mainly young Eastern Europeans and were smart, efficient and friendly (having two, young & attractive single men in our company did no harm whatsoever). Wine was a reasonable £7 a bottle and we had a bottle of red and a bottle of white with each meal. You’re never going to get gourmet food on a trip like this, but what was served was freshly cooked and decent enough. What was particularly impressive was that the menu (which changed on each of the three nights) always had meat, fish, salad and vegetarian options – it was clearly well planned out so that it had something for everyone.

Entertainment at  Mackay’s Hotel You can’t argue with different live entertainment each night. But boy does the quality vary. The first night was an appalling guitarist who didn’t do requests, couldn’t play the guitar and stuck mainly to a mix of C&W type music that’s been popular in parts of Scotland for decades – Patsy Cline and (OMG was I really subjected to this) Daniel O’Donnell. My mother loved it and the cheap bar prices – £1.50 for any drink – helped numb the pain for the rest of us. As a complete alternative there was a Rush tribute band playing in the village’s spa pavilion a few yards along the road. The second night involved a disco featuring music from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s (one song). The DJ looked as though he been let out of the local rest home for the night and his opener to a couple in their early 60s that they might be ‘too young’ for his music and that they’d be better off at the JLS concert in Dingwall down the road didn’t bode well. Neither did his opening song…Patsy Cline…again. The arrival of the waitresses livened things up, especially where my nephews were concerned. After the disco ended (we all ended up on the dance floor to a bit of Robbie Williams and probably the liveliest Gay Gordons witnessed at Mackay’s) they carried on partying with the waitresses until 5am and arrived down for breakfast later that morning happy, but a bit the worse for wear.

Excursions with David Urquhart Travel As well as half board accommodation and transport the package included excursions to Inverness , Ullapool and Pitlochry where we were dropped off and allowed to spend a couple of hours or so exploring each. I much preferred this approach than being herded around. There was also plenty of free time to spend in Strathpeffer itself, a village that boasts a lot of things to do and see, including wonderful little walks, for its diminutive size.

The David Urquhart Coach Tour of the Scottish Highlands was not at all what I’d expected. Being part of a big group of mixed ages clearly upped the fun factor but the whole operation was professional and far more interesting and enjoyable than I had imagined. It was a very relaxing way of getting to see some stunning parts of the Scottish Highlands and overall represented incredible value for money.

Buzz Trips Fact File: David Urquhart Travel offer a choice of tours. The Highlands Leisure weekend that we opted for cost £125 per person for 3 nights/4 days including half board accommodation www.davidurquhart.com

A series of short walks in Scotland

A short route recommended by the folk at our hotel, the 15th century Knipoch, took us along a grassy path lined by bushy confers and moss-covered drystane dykes to an open hillock surrounded by crispy bracken and a tartan coloured vista which took in slender Loch Feochan, Mull, Islay, and a rolling landscape which had me wishing I was wearing my kilt. […]

That was surprising, and when you think about the price it’s really good value, isn’t it. I love driving in Scotland, but you can’t see everything when you the one doing the driving, so a coach is a possible alternative…..so long as you have your iPod from the sound of it!

It surprised the hell out of me. I’m not a fan of coach trips – I hate the idea of being herded around – but it didn’t feel like that. It just felt like it was an easy way to travel from A to B and, like you say, enjoy the scenery en route.

Whilst we visit our youngest son quite often in Wrington North Somerset from South Africa, we dicided in 2008 to go on a trip to the Scottish Highlands also staying over at the McKays Hotel and going on excursions to Inverness where we did a boat trip on Lochness and visited Portree on the Island of Skye thereafter travelled right up to John O’ Groates. The dinners and breakfasts at the Hotel was really something to look forward to every day. The company on the tour was a very friendly crowd where we have made some very good friends There was lots of entertainment in the evenings which we very much enjoyed with a tot of real Scotch whisky. Scotland has sone of the most beautiful sceneries we have enjoyed on a coach tour and we will definitely do it again . We can commend this tour any time to all who would like to do a coach tour to the Scottish Highlands.and at such reasonable fares.

Thanks for leaving the comment Amanda. Sounds like you enjoyed it as much we did. We had great fun on the trip and couldn’t believe the value for money. The Highlands scenery is simply stunning.

Please do not use this travel company! They obviously do not train their staff in customer service at all and their Coach drivers do not obey the Highway Code. Travel with this company at your own peril. For example, they nearly ran over a woman pushing her baby in a Pram on the promenade. The woman was walking on the path when a David Urquhart Coach mounted the pavement and forced this woman to take drastic avoidance action otherwise the Coach would have hit her and her baby. The Coach was using the promenade and the road to turn round rather than use common sense and driving a little bit down the road to turn around. The Coach driver didn’t even apologise to this woman nor did his fellow coach driver who just shouted after the woman when she confronted him about his fellow coach drives driving. On the coach it said Britannia Mystery tour, well does that also include a tour to the local hospital too! We are all absolutely disgusted with what we saw from this company. I will definitely not be travelling with it.

I need to use a mobility scooter does you buses accommodate for this

We’re not the coach company Mary, this is just a review of one of David Urquhart’s trips. And a most enjoyable one at that.

day trip with David Urquhart coach tours

This was a one day trip and visited both the Falkirk wheel and the Kelpies .well worth a visit as both places are amazing .Included in the trip was a sail on the Wheel ,time to explore ,lunch which consisted of plate of soup numerous sandwiches and either tea or coffee. We then drove to the Kelpies and had tour which took you inside them .Both places are amazing and we thought this tour was well worth the money .

If you are looking for a great visitor attraction within travelling distance of Southern Scotland / North East of England then you cannot go wrong with the Kelpies. This is an astonishing piece of art that will move you, inspire you and entertain you in equal measure. The sculptures are truly breath--taking, I cannot overstate their beauty or the extent to which they will take your breath when you first see them. The site is currently still in development but it is well staffed, has plenty of parking (if you arrive early) and offers plenty of opportunity to eat, drink and shop despite it's still underdeveloped state. The staff are polite, professional and helpful and the tour guides are educated, informed, passionate and enthusiastic about the Kelpies and desperate for everyone to enjoy the art as much as they do. You CAN just turn up and look at the art but you will be seriously missing out if you don’t book a tour. For what we paid for our tour we got the best value I can remember from any visitor attraction in the world. I mean that. We paid about £7.50 each and got a superb, thorough, engrossing tour. We got to see the sculptures from every angle including from inside and if you miss that opportunity for the sake of approx. £7.50 then you will be sorry. I would encourage everyone who visits Scotland to do their best to get to the Kelpies and to have the tour. It is an experience you will never forget and will give you top of the range value for money. Top class.

On reading previous reviews, please can I add some advice on car parking matters. The car park nearest to the Kelpies gets very busy due to the popularity of the Helix Park and Kelpies attraction. As the area is about physical exercise, walks and other activities why not park, for free, at the Falkirk Football Stadium or at the additional car park adjacent to the college on the main road from Falkirk to Grangemouth. Follow the AA overflow car parking signs at peak busy times. Enjoy the walk through the Helix Park passing the lagoon on your right and the Great Lawn on your left and then walk through the wetlands area to reach the Kelpies. The problems of car parking on the site is entirely due to the popularity of this magnificent attraction.

After seeing "small" Kelpies at Glasgow Cenral we decided to see what's that about and booked The Kelpies tour. The Helix park is wonderful place on it's own and the Kelpies are fantastic. As it is fairly new thing, visitor center is not finished yet and we had trouble finding meeting point for the tour (it's next to the car park/gift shop). The tour lasted an hour and our guide Andy was simply delightful. We learned all about horses in Scottish history, about Andy Scott's work and of course about Kelpies and horses behind them. We had an opportunity to go inside and were left speechless. The money was more than worth it!

david urquhart bus trips

Went for a walk around the Helix park, stopped for a coffee at the Kelpies what a great place to have a rest, love those horses.

Took elderly relatives to see 'The Kelpies' & thought we would be bored but it was the opposite. Absolutely amazing structures, you need to see them up close to realise how impressive they are. The whole place is well laid out & very well kept we even saw a barge going through the lock. A very successful day out : )

The additional optional tours were also good, we did the Metro tour which I highly recommend, we also paid for the Kremlin tour. The hop on hop off has three different lines all included. Only fault was the bus was sometimes full and you had to wait for the next one which was about 15 minutes (in the cold). Read more Written January 6, 2020

They suggested we do the 1 hour boat trip and said they would drop us to the dock. 1) they dropped us in the wrong place 2) they were lost because of the marathon Then the boat, after we finally found it: 1) stinking fumes, actually gagging 2) no commentary, in fact, no interaction unless you begged 3) offered us 2 for 1 icecreams as they had melted and refrozen as the fridge gets turned off at night Honestly, we enjoyed the afternoon in the boat but spent all of it laughing at just how awful it was!!! The red route is quite exciting and takes about an hour. The bus comes every 10 to 15 minutes. However the other two routes take about two hours each and buses come every 30 to 40 minute period. If the bus is full then you have to wait at the stop for the next bus. So personally I feel that not much can be seen this way. I definitely was not impressed. The boat element was wonderful, we saw some amazing parts of Moscow along the river side. The bus element was very disappointing as it only started at 10am and was finished by 6:30pm. It was extremely warm when we were there and it would have been great to do the tour in the cool of the day. There was also no air conditioning in the down stairs part of the bus. • WilliamDyer 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor service on boat and too many waiting times on buses For the price, you should expect at minimum English speaking tour guides with decent experience, but at least in my case that did not happen both in buses and boats. And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes. I actually think I lost that day around 2 hours doing nothing. Be careful. Read more Written July 10, 2018

David Urquhart Travel rebrands to Alfa Travel Scotland

  • Share by email

David Urquhart Travel has been rebranded to Alfa Travel Scotland, three years after Alfa Leisureplex Group (ALG) acquired the Scottish coach holiday brand during the pandemic.

Lancashire-based ALG is the parent of Alfa Travel and owns 22 Leisureplex hotels in popular coastal destinations across the UK.

David Urquhart Travel announced the winding up of its coach tour operation in May 2020 as a result of the pandemic.

More than 100 travel agents in Scotland sell the company’s coach holidays and Hellen Fenton is the dedicated agency sales representative.

She joined Alfa in 2021 after many years in a similar trade role with another coach operator, Shearings.

David Urquhart Travel to wind up coach operator [May 2020]

Stephanie Clayton, senior marketing executive for Chorley-based Alfa Travel, said: “We are hoping to spread awareness so that more agents in Scotland will want to work with us once we rebrand David Urquhart to Alfa Travel next week.

“As part of the launch in Scotland, we will be sending our Scottish agents a welcome letter and pack to introduce them to Alfa Travel and our agency sales contact.

“As a brand, Alfa Travel has been established with travel agents for many years.

“However, we aren’t that well known in Scotland, so we are hoping to extend our reach within that area.”

Clayton said Fenton can help agents to set up an account, order brochures, learn about the products and run joint marketing campaigns. The operator also runs coffee mornings with agents and can supply material for promotional activities.

The rebrand coincides with the launch of 2024 brochures which are being distributed next week, featuring UK and Ireland holidays based in the group’s hotels and partner properties.

Alfa Travel operates a fleet of 50 Mercedes Benz coaches which collect customers from local pick-up points.

Alfa Travel's Scottish brochure for 2024

Emma Russell, managing director of Alfa Leisureplex Group, said: “We are excited for this next stage in our journey and delighted to be able to offer Alfa Travel’s award-winning holidays to customers in Scotland, broadening the range of coach holidays available to the Scottish market.

“We have an excellent range of holidays on sale, with some exciting new destinations and tours in 2024.”

New for next year is the axing of single supplements for guests staying in a single room at Leisureplex Hotels.

Furthermore, the firm has introduced Leisureplex ‘cosy double rooms’, which are designed for solo travellers who like the luxury of a double bed, available to book at £15 per night.

Founded 40 years ago, David Urquhart Travel has taken more than three million customers on coach holidays.

David Urquhart Travel to close coach tour business

routeone Team

David Urquhart Travel has announced that it will wind up its coach tour business in an orderly manner over the next few months.

It says that it arrived at the decision having considered the impact of the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic on travel and tourism. Also a factor is how it is “impossible to establish when coach tour and hotel operations will return to normal operating capacity.”

As a result, and in the absence of acquisition from interested parties, the Directors lodged an application to the Court of Session on 4 May to enter into a Company Voluntary Agreement.

The move does not affect David Urquhart Sky Travel. It provides services including foreign travel, cruises and city breaks and it will continue to operate as normal.

In a statement on its website , David Urquhart Travel says the decision “has not been taken lightly. However, we have to be responsive to the significant challenges that the company would face if we were not to take decisive action”.

It anticipates that the winding-up work will start on Monday 18 May. Customers’ payments are held in a secure independent trust account and all monies will be returned as soon as possible.

The East Kilbride business was founded in 1983 and claims to be Britain’s biggest privately owned coach tour company. It had worked with several coach operators around the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: what is the best time to book a moscow hop-on hop-off tour.

March to May is the best time to plan a visit to Moscow. The days are long with significant sunshine which makes this time ideal for exploring the city. January is the coldest month so make sure to avoid it if you have a low tolerance for chilly weather. However, you will be able to score some good deals on airfare and accommodation during this time.

Q: How does it work?

Moscow bus tour offers you the convenience and flexibility to get off at the nearest designated stop. No tour guide, you set your own itinerary. You’ll find all the stops are located strategically at all the major attractions, making your touring as hassle-free as possible. And then, when you’re ready to continue, return to a designated bus stop, show your pass, and hop back on the bus and onwards towards your next attraction. So, go ahead and make a whole loop of the route once you have your tour ticket, get familiar with the city and pick out your favorite places to visit and then return to them during your stay.

Q: How many days are enough to explore Moscow?

We recommend at least two to three days to explore Moscow at a relaxed pace and cover most of its prominent attractions while enjoying shopping and local cuisine.

Q: What is the validity of the ticket?

There are several ticket options available to you, depending on your length of stay. Each bus tour will have validity from 24, 36, 48 to 72 hours. And the great thing is you can plan ahead as the vouchers are valid anywhere between 6 months to 1 year and can be used at any point during that period. Check the product page or bus tour operator for complete details.

Q: Where can I find a list of all the stops and a map of the various Moscow hop-on hop-off tour routes?

You can visit the relevant product page and check the Useful Downloads section to find the latest information as routes, stops, and timings change frequently.
