15 Best Things to Do in Ocala (FL)

Located in northern Florida’s Marion County, the city of Ocala was incorporated in 1869 and currently ranks as the state’s 54th most populous city, with a population of just more than 63,000 residents.

I adore the scenery in this part of the state, known as ‘horse country’ and full of grand live oaks draped with Spanish moss.

The city lies south of Gainesville along Interstate 75 and is almost equidistant to the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts, making many of the state’s most popular attractions easily accessible for those who don’t mind spending some time in the car.

The area is covered with undeveloped forests and natural beauty so is a hotspot for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts like me.

So check out my 15 favorite things to do in and around Ocala, Florida.

1. Appleton Museum of Art

Set on the College of Central Florida’s Ocala Campus, the Appleton Museum of Art is one of the region’s premier fine art destinations, and one of those slightly off the beaten path community resources that shouldn’t be passed up, especially by artsy travelers.

Featuring a vast collection of traditional and contemporary art from all over the world, the museum is open year-round and offers a variety of instructional and educational classes, workshops, and lectures throughout the year.

What I love about the museum is its sense of place. As well as collections from Europe to Asia there’s a lot of art from right here in Central Florida, and I got an idea of how culture has progressed in this part of the world.

College campuses are great places to explore for value-minded travelers, so check the College of Central Florida’s website to see what’ll be going on when you’ll be in the area.

2. Ocala National Forest

Ocala National Forest is one of the state’s most popular natural destinations and offers visitors a vast array of year-round activity options, including kayaking, camping, fishing, and wildlife photography and viewing.

Though it can get hot in the summer and mildly cold in the winter, the weather is almost always conducive to being outside.

Something special to me is the variety of cool water-fed springs like Alexander, Salt, and Silver Glen Springs, all of which are favorite swimming attractions during the hot and humid summer months.

Keep in mind that some activities like fishing require licenses, so get one before you go if you plan to wet a line.

3. Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing and International Drag Racing Hall of Fame

Known as ‘Big Daddy’ to his loyal fans, Don Garlits is often referred to as the ‘Father of Drag Racing,’ and had an unrivaled career that spanned four decades.

During that time, he compiled an enviable collection of titles and championships that totaled nearly 150; as such, he is in a class all by himself.

The Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing and International Drag Racing Hall of Fame have been open since the mid-’70s. Their collections include hundreds of vehicles, exhibits, and historical items spread over two buildings.

I was thrilled to see the evolution of Garlits’ innovative Swap Rat dragster over the years, beginning with Swamp Rat I, built in his home garage in 1957.

Located on SW 16th Avenue in Ocala, most guests end up spending two hours or more to take it all in. Pets are welcome on a leash, so I visited with my pup.

4. Withlacoochee State Forest

Though it’s not quite as well-known as some of Florida’s other state and national forests, Withlacoochee State Forest happens to be the Sunshine State’s third largest state forest.

This property includes portions dedicated to wildlife and environmental preservation, timber production, and outdoor recreation.

There are nearly 50 miles of trails, and many of the forest’s paths are paved, making them convenient ways to explore the natural world, even for those traveling with little ones.

If you don’t mind making the trip, I recommend exploring the caves in the southwestern corner of the park. I spent a whole day looking around Danger Cave. Dames Cave, and Sick Bat Cave.

Due to its size, my advice is to familiarize yourself with the land’s layout before heading out; this can be done online or at the visitor’s center.

5. Silver River Museum and Environmental Education Center

Featuring admission that’s less expensive than a soda and bag of chips, the Silver River Museum and Environmental Education Center is one of those rare attractions that engages and entertains visitors while educating them too.

The museum and center’s exhibits touch on animals, the natural world, and the area’s rich Native American cultures, namely the Seminole Indians.

I have to admit, I did lose it when I saw the prehistoric displays, especially the intact mastodon skeleton, which is a real showpiece for the museum.

The facility is located on NE 58th Avenue in Ocala, and during the week it’s closed to the public, as this time is reserved for local school children.

Public access is granted on the weekends and costs just a few bucks; children under six get in free.

6. Canyons Zip Line and Canopy Tours

Zip lining has become a popular activity in recent years, and for those who don’t let towering heights fluster them, there’s really no better way to get a bird’ s-eye-view of the landscape than by dangling from a thin cable hundreds of feet in the air.

Canyons Zip Line and Canopy Tours feature a variety of lines of varying heights. For those who’ve never tried this exhilarating form of recreation, fear not; every participant gets an orientation and all the safety gear they’ll need before heading out.

I took the Big Cliff Canyon tour, which had nine zip lines, the longest of which was an exciting 1,100-foot ride across Lost Spring Lake.

If you’d rather try something different, rappelling, kayaking and horseback excursions are offered too.

7. Hoggetowne Medieval Faire

Featuring a variety of costumed wenches, knights, and royalty, the Hoggetowne Medieval Faire has been going strong for more than three decades and takes place in late January and early February every year.

The Faire is full of old-world activities like jousting, falconry, and munching on giant turkey legs. The knife throwers, jugglers, and dancers are big hits too, especially with the little ones.

For me, the heart of the event is the lively marketplace, with artisans selling quality jewelry, hand-blown glassware, stone and wood carving, leather crafts, and much more.

There are plenty of amusement park-style rides and games that are fun and appropriate for visitors of all ages. The cost of admission is relatively inexpensive, so mark it on your calendar and get ready to take a trip into the past.

8. Gypsy Gold Horse Farm

Located on SW 8th Avenue in Ocala, Gypsy Gold Horse Farm traces its roots back to the mid-’90s, when a trip to England convinced a local couple that their future lay in a Florida horse farm.

They ended up importing more than a dozen horses from England to the States. Since then, the farm’s scope has expanded; it is now home to an officially recognized breed of horses called Gypsy Vanner.

Though the animals are on the pricey side, the good news is that you don’t need to actually buy one to appreciate them. The farm offers a variety of tour and activity options for horse and farm lovers, so check out their website for details.

I was pressed for time, so went on the less detailed Walking Tour, admiring those mares, foals and stallions while strolling in the shade of the live oaks.

9. Ocala Civic Theatre

The Ocala Civic Theatre is one of those community resource gems that’s often overlooked by all but the savviest, most value-minded travelers.

Featuring a variety of year-round productions that include musicals, drama, and live music, the theater generally offers 12 productions per year; they host many visiting productions as well.

I caught a performance of Outside Mullingar during my time in Ocala, and was surprised by how moving I found it.

Located on East Silver Springs Boulevard in Ocala, in addition to its performing arts, the center offers educational and instructional courses and programs.

Tickets to individual shows are available online, as are season passes, which are the best value for those who’ll be in the area for a while.

10. Ocala Downtown Market

I have a real soft spot for farmers’ markets, and there’s a great one in Ocala on Saturdays 9am to 2pm. Located a few blocks from Ocala Downtown Square, the Downtown Market is a cocktail of commerce, culture, and cuisine, not to mention community.

Under a great big pavilion you’ve got a wealth of Florida-grown fresh produce, accompanied by craftspeople, artisans, and a whole selection of food trucks to tempt you.

The pavilion has giant overhead fans to keep the heat down in summer, as well as restrooms, a playground, and a permanent on-site beverage vendor, Buzz & Grind, for coffee, wine and craft beer.

11. Sholom Park

I can’t get enough of this privately owned botanical garden on Ocala’s southwest side. Founded in 2004, Sholom Park is home to more than 100 species of plants and trees, and 100+ species of fauna.

With an appropriate name that means ‘peace’ in Hebrew, the 44-acre park is fully accessible, and has a rose garden, an olive tree promenade, a prairie area, two miles of trails, and a labyrinth.

My ideal spot to take a break with a book is the pond, with a fountain and a lot of life, from koi to turtles.

12. Farm Tours of Ocala

If you want a deeper insight into Ocala’s rich horse-breeding culture then there’s a number of other working farms around the town that are happy to welcome visitors.

For my money, the best way to see a few in one afternoon is on the Horse Capital of the World Tour, via Farm Tours of Ocala.

Your time will be divided between a scenic drive through the local wooded scenery, picking up interesting details along the way, and compelling visits to farms that have bred champion horses.

The experience changes by the season, but there’s always something special in store, whether you’re treating a thoroughbred to a carrot, meeting foals, or watching competition horses at full speed.

13. The Cade Museum for Creativity and Invention

Located on South Main Street in nearby Gainesville, The Cade Museum for Creativity and Invention is all about inspiring and shaping the next generation of inventors, entrepreneurs, and visionaries.

Although it’s only been open a few years, the museum has earned a reputation for its unique and stimulating exhibits and programs.

One that caught my eye is the Junior Inventor Night, rolling together science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM), by following in the footsteps of history’s great innovators.

For parents with budding business moguls and inventors at home, there’s no better place to foster relevant learning than the Cade Museum.

14. Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park

Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park is one of northern Florida’s most unique natural attractions. Its most popular element is a giant sinkhole that plunges more than 100 feet into the earth.

The sink is a treasure trove of fossils, helping researchers document Florida’s natural history. And, in a land of sandy pine forest, it was an amazing experience to suddenly find myself in the rainforest microhabitat that fills this landform.

The park entrance is located just off Millhopper Road, and the visitor’s center is a great place to stop before heading out on your own.

There’s a boardwalk that spans the hole’s perimeter, and ranger-led tours are available for inquisitive visitors every Saturday.

15. Haile Homestead

Though cotton is still a big agricultural product in Florida, back in the 18th and 19th centuries, it was one of the state’s most significant economic drivers.

Sadly, most of the labor back then was supplied by enslaved people. To get an interesting and poignant insight into the lives of the owners and enslaved people on a real cotton farm, there’s no better place to check out than the Haile Homestead on SW Archer Road in Gainesville.

The homestead was built in the 1850s, and some of its most interesting features are its Talking Walls, which contain writings detailing the lives of those who called the homestead home.

Guided tours are offered on Saturdays and Sundays.

What to Bring to Ocala

If you’re not used to the Ocala heat, here are just a few suggestions on what to make sure you have with you, almost year-round. 

• Reusable water bottle with filter – Florida tap water is pretty gross (and I say this as a local who should know). You’ll want to stay hydrated and not keep buying bottled water, so use a reusable water bottle with a filter like this
• Lightweight walking shoes – you want breathable walking shoes like these to keep your feet cool while still protected.
• Cooling towels – I love these reusable cooling towels that are easy to carry along with you and fantastic to put around your neck when the heat gets unbearable
• Shade screen for your car or rental car – there’s nothing worse than the interior of your car baking in the sun for hours while you’re having fun. Use a shade screen like this to make sure you don’t scorch your hands on the steering wheel (yes, that’s a thing)

Take the 30-minute tour offered daily 365 days a year or if you are in town on the weekend consider the more in-depth 90-minute tour providing you with increased opportunity to see turtles, alligators, manatees, fish and even Native American relics naturally preserved along the riverbed. 

After your glass boat tour, don’t forget to take time to wander around the rest of the 4000-acre park that includes the 5-mile Silver River, surrounding forest, gardens, multiple natural springs, and the informative Silver River Museum and Environmental Center. 

6. Appleton Museum of Art

Need a break from the Florida heat and humidity? 

We recommend spending the day touring Ocala’s Appleton Museum of Art , which offers free admission for everyone the first Saturday of each month. 

The museum is home to a permanent collection of over 24,000 objects from around the world including Europe, Asia, Africa, pre-Columbian as well as rotating exhibits that change throughout the year.   

If you are looking for art with a more local connection, don’t miss the museum’s Florida artist collection as well as Appleton’s Equine art collection from around the world that includes objects that relate to local equine history. 

Insider tip: There is not a restaurant on site and food and drinks are limited to designated areas so plan to eat at one of Ocala’s many restaurants before or after your visit. 

7. Sholom Park

Pack your binoculars and get ready for some world class bird watching at Sholom Park . 

As you make your way through the 2 miles of paved trails in this 44-acre botanical garden (don’t worry there are benches if you need to take a break), be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the numerous bird species that make this park a bird watcher’s paradise.    

Keep track of the different bird species and other critters you spot while at the park with the park’s “I Spy at Sholom Park” game that you can view on your phone or print out for the family before you arrive. 

8. Bubba Raceway Park

Put the pedal to the metal and get yourself to the Bubba Raceway Park , also known as Ocala Raceway, the oldest continuously operating racetrack in the state of Florida. 

This ⅜ mile clay short track is host to numerous race series and race classes as well as special events and is always a good time! 

Bring the family, as well as ear protection for the young kids and seat pads for the bleacher seats, and make a night of it as there is a concession stand on site with your typical stadium food options (read: it won’t be healthy or organic). 

9. Stone Creek Golf Course

The panoramic views of the Ocala countryside provide the perfect backdrop for a round of golf at Stone Creek Golf Course .

Central Florida is a golf destination and the Stone Creek Golf Course is a great option to challenge players of any skill level.

If 18 holes in the Florida sun is too much, you can opt to check out the putting greens or hit the golf shop and onsite restaurant instead. 

9. Juniper Prairie Wilderness

Pack your gear for a backpacking adventure in the Juniper Prairie Wilderness and experience natural, untouched Florida.

This wilderness area is the largest wilderness area in the Ocala National Forest and is not reachable by car, but does encompass an 8 mile stretch of the north-south Florida National Scenic Trail for hiking.

Fill your day pack for an out and back hike (don’t forget your water) or load up your backpack with your camping gear for backcountry camping. 

Hidden Pond is our favorite remote camping spot despite its lack of any amenities, (hint: bring your own toilet paper and shovel) but we think it is worth roughing it to be able to pitch your tent anywhere under the stars. 

Remember to leave no trace behind to preserve this spectacular wilderness for others. 

10. Katya Vineyards

This family-owned winery and restaurant is known for its gourmet food and wine and a food pairing menu that is sure to impress any foodie. 

We recommend the 4-course food and wine pairing menu that is constantly updated to incorporate the freshest local ingredients. 

Katya Vineyards is located in downtown Ocala and outfitted with rustic decor that lends itself to a relaxing and friendly atmosphere that can be enjoyed Tuesday through Saturday.

Reservations are highly recommended. 

11. Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing

Car lovers, grab your driving gloves and head to the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing that documents the history of sport racing and drag racing and is home to the Drag Racing Hall of Fame.

Take a self-guided tour through the museum and the racing and antique car buildings that showcase roughly 300 race cars and antique cars between them. 

Don and his wife live in a house on the property so you may be lucky enough to run into him at the museum mingling with the patrons or catch a glimpse of him tinkering with equipment in his yard. 

Better yet, schedule a private tour with Don in advance that includes access to private garage areas and a tour with the legend himself.

12.  Reilly Arts Center

The Reilly Arts Center is Ocala’s home for arts and entertainment and the home of the Ocala Symphony. 

Located in downtown Ocala, the Reilly Arts Center is an intimate venue hosting a wide range of events including musicals, concerts, movies, dances, and a variety of musical tributes and performances throughout the year.

With an event calendar packed with options you will find options for everyone in the family to enjoy. 

13. Cactus Jack’s Trail Rides

If you come to “Horse Country” you can’t leave without going horseback riding!

We recommend saddling up with Cactus Jack’s Trail Rides for guided horseback trail rides. 

You can choose between a 1 hour, 1 ½ hour or 2-hour relaxing tour through the Ocala Cross Florida Greenway State Park on the mostly shaded trails. 

The Greenway is the first wildlife corridor in Florida to have a land bridge across a major interstate that can be used by trail users and wildlife. 

Kids must be at least 6 years of age and all riders 17 years old or younger are required to wear helmets, riding experience is not necessary but general good health is.

14. Fish Hawk Spirits

Take a tour of Fish Hawk Spirits Distillery , Florida’s only medal winning, farm to bottle ultra-premium spirits distillery that is like no distillery you have ever visited before! 

Fish Hawk Spirits is not located in a warehouse or a typical building, instead you will find them distilling on a farm using their handmade stills and equipment in a humble shed.

Where Is Ocala Located?

Ocala is located in North Central Florida, about 30 miles south of Gainesville , and about 1 hr 15 minutes north of Orlando . Located off I-75 Interstate it is easy to reach from any city in Florida.

Ocala was first settled by indigenous people in 6500 BC, and later in 500 AD by the Timucua. Ocala in the 16th century was a large Timucua village, meaning “Big Hammock”. And later discovered by Hernando de Soto in 1539.

It was not until 1821 that Ocala because a United States Territory. And the modern city of Ocala was established in 1849, and renamed after “Kingdom of the Sun”.

Ocala is known for its equestrian ties dating back to 1943 with the first thoroughbred horse farm. Now called the “Horse Capital of the World” the city hosts annual HITS horse show, one of the largest in the country.

In addition to its equestrian ties Ocala is a nature lovers paradise. Known for the Ocala National Forest and local springs round the area, the most famous being Silver Springs , there are tons of outdoor things to do in Ocala.

Appleton Museum of Art

The Appleton museum is marble clad built in a classical Italian architecture with a beautiful fountain and reflecting pool. Opened in 1982, the museum was a gift from Arthur Appleton, to preserve his extensive art collection.

Home to over 18,000 works of art in 6 galleries: European, American, Asian, Contemporary, African, and pre-Columbian the museum also focus on Florida Artists.

The Appleton Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, and on Sunday from 12 pm to 5 pm. Admission is $10 for Adults, $8 for Senors, and $5 for children over the age of 6.

Ocala National Forest

The Ocala National Forest is the southernmost forest in the United States and the largest sand pine scrub forest in the Unites States. It covers 383,000 acres.

With over 600 lakes, springs, rivers, wilderness areas and hiking trails the Ocala National forest is a must for any outdoor enthusiast looking for things to do in Ocala.

If wanting to explore the Ocala National Forest , the Black Bear Scenic Byway is 60 miles of scenic views along SR 40 such as the Juniper springs Wilderness area and the St. Johns River. You can often spot Black bears, alligators, deer, boars, and tortoises.

Alexander Springs

Alexander springs is known as a first-magnitude spring and is one of the easiest for visitors to visit. A constant 72 degrees, with crystal clear water and a sandy bottom this spring is family friendly.

It you are a scuba diver Alexander springs should be on your list of things to do in Ocala as it is the only spring inside Ocala National Forest where scuba diving is permitted! There are picnic tables and restrooms located on site.

Juniper Springs

Juniper Springs is also located within the Ocala National Forest and is the second first-magnitude spring. The Juniper Springs campground is one of the most popular with in the National Forest!

If looking for springs this should be on your list of things to do in Ocala! The natural springs are the center of the Juniper recreational area. Also, at a constant 72 degrees water temperature.

The Spring is 135 feet long by 80 feet wide and has the waterwheel as a backdrop. There is a concrete wall area surrounding the springs, with trees and other vegetation creating a canopy around.

Unlike Alexander Springs , this area is more popular with canoeing the 7-mile Juniper Run through the Big Scrub Ecosystem. The run takes 3 to 5 hours to complete!

Marion County Museum of History & Archaeology

Marion County Museum of History and Archaeology open in 2011 located on McPherson County Government Complex.

Salt Springs

Canyons Zip Line

Canyons zip line should be on any adventure lovers list of things to do in Ocala! This adventure park is located over a cliff, where you zip line at 155 feet high and 1,150 feet long over the Lost spring lake.

This is Florida’s only canopy tour over two canyons and four lakes making for a thrilling zip lining adventure. They have several zip lining tours such as Big Cliff Canyon, Sky High Tour, Treetop Express, and Full Moon Night Tour.

In addition to zip lining they also offer horseback riding tours for a unique thing to do in Ocala. Or if kayaking is more your style they offer several kayak tours on Lost Spring lake.

Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing

The museum opened in 1976, and gives a history of drag racing. The tour of the museum takes around 2 hours, and there are over 300 cars spread between two buildings. Also home to the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame where Garlits himself is a member.

Don Garlits museum aims to preserve the history of drag racing, the research, and collection of historical racing vehicles. In the antique’s building you can find one of the largest collections of Ford cars.

Admission is $20 for adults, $15 for Seniors, Military, College Students and $10 for Children over age of 5.

Rainbow Springs State Park

Rainbow Springs State Park is located in nearby Dunnellon just west of Ocala. This 1000-acre state park was created millions of years ago and is another place to visit year round.

For those looking for an inexpensive spring to visit at just $2 per person and free for children under 6 this should be on your list of things to do in Ocala.

Get there early as the park often closes once it reaches capacity on the weekends! Not only can you swim in the springs at the beach near the Headspring you can tube, kayak and canoe in the area. Tubing does have a separate entrance to the park!

There is a little trail perfect for relaxing and admiring the man-made waterfalls and gardens, and finish your day with an ice cream for the concession stand!

What makes this area unique is you can view a protected sandhill habitat that is currently being restored. Rainbow springs is on the Great Florida birding trail, making it a great place to spot owls, hawks and woodpeckers.

Sholom Park

Sholom Park is a 44 acre botanical garden that opened in 2004 and is home over 100 species of plants on a 2 mile paved trail. If looking for a peaceful place to relax Sholom park should be on your list of things to do in Ocala.

The park uses native plants that are supportive of the Central Florida climate. The Botanical gardens goal is foster the beauty of the natural landscapes of wooded areas adding trees and flowers to support native wildlife.

Carney Island Recreation and Conservation Area

Carney Island Recreation and Conservation Area is located southeast of Ocala. Located on lake Weir this area has been used as an agricultural area since the 1600s.

Acquired by Coca-Cola company in the 1960s they sold Carney Island to Marion County in the 1990s. Nearby to orange groves the scent remains in the air.

There are 750 acres with playgrounds, shorelines, and wetland systems and walking trials to explore. Wildlife can be viewed from the trails that wind in a 4-mile loop though the old pine trees. There is also a popular swimming area located on Lake Weir.

Katya Vineyards

Katya Vineyard has a tasting room located in the historic square of downtown Ocala. Founded by David and Patricia Sokol the Katya Vineyards were founded in 2010 with the Falcon as the logo. And the tasting room in downtown Ocala was opened in 2017!

The vineyard used new California style hybrid grapes created for this climate. The grapes of choice are the Blanc du Bois and Lenoir and grown atop a limestone dome!

The tasting room is open Tuesday though Saturday from 4pm to 9 pm serving gourmet food by Chef Tony Deras. The menu includes fresh Burrata, Black Angus Tartar, Ahi Sushi, Waggu beef, seared scallops and more.

Try the Katya Vineyard Red Blends such and Annadoll or Bordo or Bladimir or Katya Vineyard White Blends such as Katya Blanc du Bois, or Alexandra Blanc du Bois.

They also have a large selection of other wines chosen by Dr. Wine.

Silver Springs State Park

Silver Springs State Park should be on any list of things to do in Ocala. As one of the first Florida attractions, this state park is known for its glass bottom boat rides on one of America’s largest springs!

The Spring is surrounded by historical structures and lush gardens that welcomed northers who used to arrive on steamships.

Silver Springs glass bottom boat is Florida’s oldest attraction beginning in 1870! You can view the crystal clear water and underwater marine life of the spring from the comfort of a boat! You can also kayak through the forest area.

For those looking for educational things to do in Ocala there is the Silver River Museum and Environmental Education Center that provides hands on learning of the natural history and culture in Marion County.

Open from 8 am to dusk, 365 days a year admission fee is $8 per vehicle.

Florida Civic Theater

The Florida Civic Theater has been a part of the Ocala cultural scene for the past 60 years. Located inside the Appleton cultural center, the Civic Theater produces high quality live productions that are affordable.

The first meeting was held in 1950, inside the Hotel Ocala at the coffee shop, and later the Marion Theater, and Ocala High School.

In 1980, the Civic Theater moved into its current location. It is ranked as one of the top 30 community theaters in the Unites states.

When the issues were resolved in 1844, the fort was used as a courthouse for a while, only to be abandoned totally.

Today, this site is preserved as a National Historic Landmark after reconstruction in the year 2017.

2. Visit Ocala National Forest

If you want to see the true Florida wilderness, go to the Ocala National Forest . It is Florida's second-largest national forest. The Ocala National Forest is part of a large set of national parks, and together, they cover almost 1.2 million acres. These parks have 85,000 acres of unique federal wilderness and more than 500,000 acres of wetlands. There are also over 1,400 miles of trails to explore.

The forest is home to stunning blue springs and lakes, green foliage, winding rivers, and an abundance of wildlife. It has more than 600 lakes and rivers. You can spend a whole day in the water, doing things like paddleboarding, fishing, snorkeling, canoeing, or taking a boat ride. If you want to stay on land, you can go biking, horseback riding, hiking, riding an ATV, taking a scenic drive, or having a campfire with your friends. Hike the beautiful pathways that pass by Alexander Springs, Juniper Springs, Salt Springs, and Silver Glen Springs. You can buy a day pass for $5 and $50-60 for the entire season if you're a local.

3. Visit the Appleton Museum of Art

If you love art and you're in Ocala, Florida, you should definitely visit the Appleton Museum of Art . It is located on the College of Central Florida, Ocala campus, and the building itself is spectacular. The huge 82,000-square-foot marble structure is designed in the classic Italian style. The building sits on 44 acres of beautiful grounds, which include a fountain, a reflecting pool, and an outdoor sculpture walk.

The museum houses more than 24,000 artworks! They display a wide range of genres and paintings from various eras, from ancient to contemporary. You'll see American, pre-Columbian, European, and African art here. They even include permanent collections of masterpieces by great artists such as Degas, Renoir, and Monet. Besides just looking at art, the Appleton Museum of Art offers workshops, art classes, and events. It's a gathering spot for the community. 

4. Take a Tour of Gypsy Gold Horse Farm.

Location: 12501 8th Avenue, Ocala, Florida

Gypsy Gold Horse Farm is a must-see attraction in the “Horse Capital of the World,” Ocala. Cindy Thompson and Dennis visited England in 1995 and fell in love with the country's beautiful white and black horses. They brought sixteen of these horses to Florida and developed a new breed known as the Gypsy Vanner.

Now, Gypsy Gold Horse Farm is home to these unique and officially recognized horses. Mr. Dennis leads a walking tour of the farm every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday at 10 am. You get up close and personal with these admirable horses during the tour. The farm itself is beautiful, with ancient trees draped with Spanish moss. The farm also provides private group tours, but you must book them beforehand. It's a fantastic place to learn about and enjoy these remarkable horses.

5. Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing

Location: 13700 SW 16th Avenue, Ocala, FL 34473

Open Hours: Mon-Sun, 9 am – 5 pm. Closed on Christmas and Thanksgiving

The Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing is a must-visit spot in Ocala for those who love drag racing. Don Glen Garlits, known as “Big Daddy,” is the founder of drag racing. Donald is a Tampa, Florida-based race car driver and engineer. He won 17 global championships and 144 national event titles during his forty-year career. He designed the Swamp Rat vehicle, which changed the sport of drag racing. 

The museum was opened in 1984 and tells the story of drag racing through its impressive collection of 90 racing cars. The museum has many of Don's famous dragsters, racing antiques, classic cars, and even a gift shop. The museum even has the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame. It's a fun place to learn about drag racing and see some unique cars.

6. Wander Through Sholom Park

Location: 7110 SW 80th Avenue, Ocala, FL 34481

If you're looking for a serene and peaceful escape in Ocala, head to Sholom Park ! The park, whose name means “peace” in Hebrew, is a place for reflection and enjoying nature. The 44-acre park has botanical gardens, walking trails, and calm ponds. It's the perfect place for a leisurely stroll or a peaceful picnic.

As you wander through the park, you'll see 11 beautifully landscaped areas, including a butterfly garden, a ginger grade, a labyrinth, a formal garden, and an azalea trail. Connected paved paths make it easy to explore every corner of the park. The Enchanted Forest is a highlight, with a small paved trail leading to a stunning koi pond behind a canopy of trees. Sholom Park is free to enter and is open every day. Donations are welcome to help maintain and support the park.

7. Visit Fort King National Historic Landmark

The town of Ocala, Florida, has a rich history, and the Fort King National Historic Landmark is an excellent spot to learn about it where you will step back in time. The 40-acre site was once the location of Fort King, a military post during the Second Seminole War. This was a long and costly conflict between the United States and the native inhabitants of Florida.

Fort King was incorporated into Marion County after the United States won the war. It served as the first county courthouse and the county seat. Today, it is a living history park where tourists can learn about life in the 19th century in this section of Florida. There is a Visitor's Center in the park where you can see a documentary and see historic artifacts. The park also has a trail through a wooded area with picnic tables and a Heritage Garden.

8. Go Ziplining at Canyon ZipLines and Canopy Tours

The Reilly Arts Center, located in Downtown Ocala, offers an abundance of culture and art. It's a beautiful lavender-colored Art Deco building with around 700 seats. People can attend concerts, events, and all types of performances there. It is home to the Ocala Symphony Orchestra and has welcomed famous acts like Judy Collins and Billy Joel. 

The Marion, a historic cinema within the theater, shows a variety of films and hosts performances ranging from rock to jazz and blues to classical. It's a great spot for a fun night out in Historic Downtown Ocala. You can eat at one of the fine restaurants before watching a movie or a live performance at the Reilly Arts Center.

11. Silver River Museum and Environmental Education Center

 Location: 1445 NE 58th Avenue, Ocala, FL 34470, United States

If you want to learn about Florida's nature, head to the Silver River Museum and Environmental Education Center . It looks like a nature school located in Silver River State Park. Marion County Public Schools runs the museum to teach people about the nature around here. You can find it right at the entrance to the campground. You can even go outside and do fun stuff like canoeing and hiking to explore the forests and wetlands. This place is not just fun; it also teaches you interesting things about nature, animals, and the Seminole Indians who used to live here. They even have a real mastodon skeleton, and it's awesome! 

During the week, it's closed because local school kids come to learn. But on the weekends, everyone can go. It only costs a few bucks to get in, and if you're six or younger, it's free!

12. Take Kids to Petting Zoo Ocala

Location: 11150 West Highway 40, Ocala, FL 34482

Petting Zoo Ocala is an excellent choice for families, especially kids. Here, they can meet and interact with different farm animals and pets, many of whom have been rescued and given a loving home. Mammals such as Terry, a ring-tailed lemur, and Bongo, a squirrel monkey, live at the refuge. There are also domestic and exotic animals like llamas, cattle, camels, goats, sheep, pigs, and even a wallaby. A few reptiles and friendly birds add to the diversity of the zoo. The zoo offers a hands-on experience for children, allowing them to feed, pet, and learn about the animals. It's an opportunity to learn about the importance of animal welfare. 

Petting Zoo Ocala is also ideal for birthday parties and special occasions, with picnic spots available for visitors. It's a fun and affordable outing for people of all ages, with various animals to see and activities to enjoy.

Florida is boring?!

The Sunshine State is home to Disney World and Universal Studios and has hundreds of miles of beaches. We have the oldest city in the U.S. in our backyard and some of the richest people in the world .

To keep life interesting, we even have sharks and alligators .

Apparently, that's not enough.

According to a study by Solitaired , Florida is the fifth most boring state in the United States , based on an analysis of 66.7 million Google reviews of 3,290 popular tourist attractions around the world. The analysis was made to determine what locations were the least interesting.

Here's what the study discovered.

"Yet, it only ranks as the fifth most boring state because each attraction garners very few yawns from visitors. Despite many attractions being labeled boring by reviewers, this sentiment is such a minority that Florida only pans out as the fifth most boring state."

Solitaired, an online gaming platform that creates classic games — like Solitaire — with a focus on improving mental acuity, memory and processing speed.  

In March 2024, Solitaired "analyzed 66.7 million Google reviews of 3,290 popular tourist attractions worldwide , spanning 384 cities across 71 countries.

"We focused our analysis on keyword mentions indicative of a bored tourist. Those keywords were "boring," "bored," "bore," "boredom," "tiresome," "dull," "drab," "lackluster," "lifeless," "mediocre," and "tedious.

"We ranked the attractions by the frequency with which tourists mentioned boredom-related keywords, comparing the mentions to the total reviews for each spot."

Attractions with fewer than 2,000 total reviews were removed.

While Florida got a huge shoutout on Taylor Swift " The Tortured Poet's Department " album, the Northwest Florida city got an extra special nod in the song.

In her 11th studio album , Swift sings about escaping to the Sunshine State, with Florence + The Machine  by her side. Together, they both detail the sunny paradise in a haunting, brutal way that only Floridians know.

What were Taylor Swift's lyrics about Destin?

In the song " Florida !!!" with Florence + the Machine, Swift sings the lyrics:

"Little did you know your home's really only; A town you're just a guest in; So you work your life away just to pay; For a time-share down in Destin."

Where is Destin?

Destin is a city located along the Gulf of Mexico in Okaloosa County, right in the state's panhandle region. According to USA Today, the area is known as a tourist destination because of the gulf beaches, fishing and resorts. 

What is Swift's connection to Destin, Florida?

There is no direct connection to Destin for the popstar but Swift does have some ties to the state as a whole.

According to Betway, Florida makes 5.5 million yearly searches about Taylor Swift, making it the No. 1 state in the U.S. That's roughly 81,910 searches per 10,000 residents.

What is Taylor Swift's song 'Florida!!!' about?

In “Florida!!!”, Swift and Florence offer up a suspense-filled track that highlights the beauty and brutality of the state, with lyrics aimed at escaping, washing away with hurricanes and bodies (metaphorically) sinking away in the swamp.

But what is the song actually about? Well, no one but Swift, her collaborators and closest confidants will know the answer but that doesn't stop Swifties from sleuthing. However, Swift did tell iHeart Radio that after getting inspiration from crime shows, she thought of where she'd go if she needed to reinvent herself.

"I think I was coming up with this idea of 'what happens when your life doesn't fit' or 'the choices you've made catch up with you' and you're surrounded by these harsh consequences and judgement," Swift said. "And circumstances did not lead you to where you thought you'd be."

A column about taylor's lyrics and how 'florida' they really are..

Taylor Swift might now know how topical her song "Florida!!!" is when it comes to the state's political scene.

As the State Watchdog Reporter for USA TODAY Network-Florida, I cover the state government in Tallahassee. Any given day, you can find me watching a press conference with Gov. Ron DeSantis, looking through medical examiner data or interviewing state legislators about the bills they've sponsored.

But today, I'll be writing about Taylor's lyrics and how "Florida!!!" they really are.

Florida: Taylor's Version compared to DeSantis' Version

If you didn't stay up until 4 a.m. to listen to Taylor Swift's new highly anticipated album "The Tortured Poets Department"  then you're one of the few who don't have an opinion on the song "Florida!!!"

The song, featuring Florence Welch with Florence + The Machine, depicts the state like an old frontier town – disorderly and dark, with murder, binge drinking and drugs – the opposite of Gov. Ron DeSantis' tough "law and order" stance on crime.

"We're proud of being a law and order state," DeSantis said last week as he signed five public safety bills in St. Petersburg.

The governor has repeated the mantra at almost every press conference this spring. Whether it was signing a bill that would allow homeowners to remove squatters from their property or warning spring breakers in Miami, DeSantis has criticized blue states like California and has compared them to Florida.

"What passes muster in New York and California is not passing muster here," he said when he signed   "Property Rights" bill ( HB 621)  in Orlando in March.

Florida (Taylor's version) is different. Her lyrics echo the Sunshine State stereotypes that DeSantis is actively trying to change.

Regardless, the verses of "Florida!!!" hit news peg after news peg in every stanza, and it's easy for me to write about the latest in Florida politics using Taylor's talents. Maybe Generation Alpha will subscribe to the paper after this.

Is Taylor talking about the heat preemption law DeSantis signed last week?

The measure was in response to a Miami-Dade County proposal, which suggested mandated breaks in the shade on the hottest days – but Florida said no and passed HB 433. It bars local governments from establishing policies regarding heat exposure requirements not otherwise required under state or federal law.

During this year's legislative session, Sen. Jay Trumbull, R-Panama City said he sponsored the bill to gain support for a statewide mandate to follow federal Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.  

But the law has frustrated and angered some experts and advocates for construction workers and farmworkers, who say workers need more protections, not fewer.

Florida and the smell of weed - legal or not

Smelling like weed is something DeSantis has warned Floridians time and time again may happen if a constitutional amendment on the ballot this November passes.

The proposal, known as  Amendment 3 , will legalize the "non-medical personal use of marijuana products and marijuana accessories by an adult" 21 or older if approved by 60% or more of statewide voters. It would take effect six months after the election.

DeSantis said he thought medical marijuana was enough for Florida.

"This state will start to smell like marijuana ... it will reduce the quality of life," he said. "Do we want to have more marijuana in our communities? I don't think it'll work out well. But it is a very, very broad amendment."

This session, local governments lost authority to the state on vacation rentals. The new law also created overnight occupancy limits, and fines for rental violations would be capped at $500.

There were just under 27,000 vacation rentals licensed with the state in 2022, a number seen as capturing only a fraction of the rentals likely in operation. 

Lawmakers have been scrapping over vacation rentals for more than a decade, advancing policies that toggle between more state control and more hands-off. This year, the state comes out on top, unless DeSantis vetoes the bill. 

DeSantis hasn’t commented on the latest legislation and his office declined to offer insight into his thinking. 

Florida may be a drug, but the penalties are getting steeper

'Florida is one hell of a drug'

If Taylor is talking about literal drugs, that's an issue Florida's lawmakers have continued to crack down on. This year, Florida added tianeptine, 'gas station heroin,' to the Schedule I.

In early April, DeSantis signed "Exposures of First Responders to Fentanyl" (SB 718 ) and said it would "make sure that the people that wear the uniform are protected," although medical experts say the new law could potentially cause harm and discourage bystanders and family members from calling 911 during an overdose.

DeSantis also announced an expansion of the  Coordinated Opioid Recovery (CORE) Network , an effort between the state's Department of Health, Department of Children and Families and the Agency for Health Care Administration. Its aim is to curb the number of deaths caused by the polluted drug supply and will be expanded to 29 counties.

The program, which started in 12 counties in 2022, connects people with medication treatment, recovery programs and peer support.

This is Florence's line. It's pretty obvious – Hurricane Florence hit in 2018. This year, an "extremely active" hurricane season is likely, according to weather forecasters.

Last year was the fourth most active season on record. Hurricane Idalia was the only U.S. landfalling hurricane in 2023 . It made landfall as a category-3 hurricane on Aug. 30 near Keaton Beach, Florida, causing storm surge inundation of 7 to 12 feet and widespread rainfall flooding in Florida and throughout the Southeast, NOAA said.

Taylor meets Tiger King in 'Florida!!!'

'And your cheating husband disappeared, well, no one asks any questions here'

One of Florida's most famous disappearing husbands was the spouse of “Tiger King” star Carole Baskin, who is asking the Florida Supreme Court to protect her against a defamation lawsuit filed by the longtime assistant of her missing former husband.

Leading up to the airing of “Tiger King,” a Netflix documentary series  that became a cult phenomenon  in 2020, Baskin endeavored “to address a false storyline (that) suggested she killed her former husband,” according  to legal filings  from the star. 

Baskin read aloud old diary entries on her YouTube channel and posted on her website accusations that McQueen, who had appeared on the show to discuss Baskin's former husband’s mysterious disappearance, embezzled and committed other misdeeds.

McQueen sued Baskin for defamation in Hillsborough County Circuit Court, but a judge there said the assistant had no grounds to sue. A state appeals court disagreed with the lower court.

Now Baskin is asking the state's Supreme Court to weigh in, raising the stakes on a series of legal arguments encompassing the First Amendment and defamation law.

'Florida!!!' meets Texas as DeSantis sends in the state guard

DeSantis talks about Texas a lot at his press conferences.

The governor and members of his administration routinely blast President Joe Biden and Republican members of Congress for their response to the increase of immigrants coming through the country's southern border.

DeSantis reestablished the State Guard in 2022, and in February of this year, he sent more than 1,000 Florida National Guard members and State Guard Soldiers to Texas to help stop what he called "the invasion at the southern border." They joined Highway Patrol, Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Florida Department of Law Enforcement members already there, a  press release  said.

Also in February, Taylor got wrapped up in a conspiracy theory about the president. Nearly 1 in 5 Americans, mostly conservatives, believed the singer is part of a covert effort to help Biden win the 2024 election, according to a Monmouth University poll.

Two-thirds of Americans, however, are supportive of Taylor's efforts to increase voter turnout.

The song ends with a shout out to this refrain I'm attributing to the state's population boom. According to the U.S. Census, Florida experienced a net migration of more than 200,000 adults in 2022.

Marijuana legalization may be on the ballot in these four states in 2024

It’s been more than a decade since Colorado and Washington state made recreational marijuana legal, and in the years since, 24 states and Washington D.C. have followed. Seventeen other states have legalized medical marijuana, with varying exceptions in each state’s laws.  

Four more states – Florida, Idaho, Nebraska and South Dakota – may soon join that growing list. Advocates in each state are hoping to get a referendum on their November general election ballots, so voters can choose if they want to legalize the use of recreational or medical marijuana.

Here's where each of the states’ efforts stand as of April 20:

What’s on the Florida ballot?

Florida’s amendment on recreational marijuana , Amendment 3, would allow anyone 21 years of age and older to use and possess up to three ounces of marijuana. Weed could also be purchased through dispensaries without the use of a medical marijuana card, among other changes to the state’s law.

Will it pass?

Floridians will need to vote at least 60% in favor of legalization for the referendum to pass. It’s a high bar, but advocates in the state say it’s doable – a November poll from the University of North Florida found that 67% of residents were in favor of legalizing recreational marijuana.

The cannabis industry also seems poised to tap into an already thriving market. The Florida-based cannabis company Trulieve spent $40 million on the effort to collect the needed signatures to put recreational marijuana on the November ballot. Other cannabis companies have raised $15 million for the initiative.

They could likely earn back that money two-fold. Medicinal marijuana is already a booming business in the Sunshine State, with nearly 800,000 customers . Florida also has one of the fastest growing populations in the United States, as well as a thriving tourism industry.

It would be up to the state legislature to decide if to tax the product and by how much, but other states have seen large financial boons after marijuana legalization.

What’s on the Idaho ballot?

Idaho is one of only five states that prohibits the use of marijuana of any kind, including for medicinal purposes, representing some of the strictest laws on the books.

The political action committee Kind Idaho has been working to change that for years. The group is currently collecting signatures for their Idaho Medical Marijuana Initiative , which would focus on providing medical marijuana to people with chronic health conditions or those who are terminally ill. Among other provisions, it would also protect such individuals’ caregivers from prosecution and criminal sanction if they possessed or grew marijuana for their patients.

The Idaho Medical Marijuana Initiative, which was first proposed by Kind Idaho in 2022, is not on the ballot yet. The group is still collecting signatures and will need to submit a total of 62,896 signatures by May 1 to appear on the November ballot.

If it appears on the ballot, advocates are hopeful that it stands a good chance of passing. According to a 2022 poll by the Idaho Statesman, 68% of respondents said they were in favor of decriminalizing cannabis for medical purposes.

What’s on the Nebraska ballot?

Cannabis in Nebraska is illegal, both for medicinal and recreational purposes. Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana is a ballot committee working to qualify two medical cannabis initiatives for the November general election ballot.

The first ballot initiative – The Patient Protection Act – would protect those “with serious health conditions and their caregivers from arrest for the use of medical cannabis as recommended by a health care provider.”

The second initiative, called The Medical Cannabis Regulation Act, would establish a Nebraska Medical Cannabis Commission that could regulate private businesses that manufacture and provide medical marijuana to qualified patients.

Will they pass?

As of March, the group reportedly had at least 40,000 of the required 87,000 signatures for each ballot initiative, with the deadline to submit the petitions on July 3. They are hoping to collect a significant number of signatures during their statewide event on April 20.

Recent polling found that 70% of Nebraskans are in favor of legalizing medical marijuana, a hopeful sign for advocates if the measures make it on the November ballot.

South Dakota

What’s on the south dakota ballot.

The South Dakota Marijuana Legalization Initiative may appear on the November ballot if the citizen-led measure gets enough signatures. The deadline to submit the needed 17,509 signatures is May 7.

The measure would legalize the use, possession and distribution of medical marijuana.

If the measure appears on the ballot, it stands a good chance of passing. South Dakotans already voted to legalize both medicinal and recreational weed in the 2020 election. But the amendment that legalized recreational weed was struck down as unconstitutional the following year, leaving only medical cannabis legal in the state.

Currently, South Dakota has some of the harshest laws penalizing cannabis – possession of any amount can land someone in prison for 10 years and with a fine up to $20,000.

The United States’ patchwork of marijuana laws can be confusing at best. It’s a good idea to check where your state stands on legalization.
