Privacy Overview

  • Most purposes explained in this notice rely on the storage or accessing of information from your device when you use an app or visit a website. For example, a vendor or publisher might need to store a cookie on your device during your first visit on a website, to be able to recognise your device during your next visits (by accessing this cookie each time).
  • A car manufacturer wants to promote its electric vehicles to environmentally conscious users living in the city after office hours. The advertising is presented on a page with related content (such as an article on climate change actions) after 6:30 p.m. to users whose non-precise location suggests that they are in an urban zone.
  • A large producer of watercolour paints wants to carry out an online advertising campaign for its latest watercolour range, diversifying its audience to reach as many amateur and professional artists as possible and avoiding showing the ad next to mismatched content (for instance, articles about how to paint your house). The number of times that the ad has been presented to you is detected and limited, to avoid presenting it too often.
  • If you read several articles about the best bike accessories to buy, this information could be used to create a profile about your interest in bike accessories. Such a profile may be used or improved later on, on the same or a different website or app to present you with advertising for a particular bike accessory brand. If you also look at a configurator for a vehicle on a luxury car manufacturer website, this information could be combined with your interest in bikes to refine your profile and make an assumption that you are interested in luxury cycling gear.
  • An apparel company wishes to promote its new line of high-end baby clothes. It gets in touch with an agency that has a network of clients with high income customers (such as high-end supermarkets) and asks the agency to create profiles of young parents or couples who can be assumed to be wealthy and to have a new child, so that these can later be used to present advertising within partner apps based on those profiles.
  • An online retailer wants to advertise a limited sale on running shoes. It wants to target advertising to users who previously looked at running shoes on its mobile app. Tracking technologies might be used to recognise that you have previously used the mobile app to consult running shoes, in order to present you with the corresponding advertisement on the app.
  • A profile created for personalised advertising in relation to a person having searched for bike accessories on a website can be used to present the relevant advertisement for bike accessories on a mobile app of another organisation.
  • You read several articles on how to build a treehouse on a social media platform. This information might be added to a profile to mark your interest in content related to outdoors as well as do-it-yourself guides (with the objective of allowing the personalisation of content, so that for example you are presented with more blog posts and articles on treehouses and wood cabins in the future).
  • You have viewed three videos on space exploration across different TV apps. An unrelated news platform with which you have had no contact builds a profile based on that viewing behaviour, marking space exploration as a topic of possible interest for other videos.
  • You read articles on vegetarian food on a social media platform and then use the cooking app of an unrelated company. The profile built about you on the social media platform will be used to present you vegetarian recipes on the welcome screen of the cooking app.
  • You have viewed three videos about rowing across different websites. An unrelated video sharing platform will recommend five other videos on rowing that may be of interest to you when you use your TV app, based on a profile built about you when you visited those different websites to watch online videos.
  • You have clicked on an advertisement about a “black Friday” discount by an online shop on the website of a publisher and purchased a product. Your click will be linked to this purchase. Your interaction and that of other users will be measured to know how many clicks on the ad led to a purchase.
  • You are one of very few to have clicked on an advertisement about an “international appreciation day” discount by an online gift shop within the app of a publisher. The publisher wants to have reports to understand how often a specific ad placement within the app, and notably the “international appreciation day” ad, has been viewed or clicked by you and other users, in order to help the publisher and its partners (such as agencies) optimise ad placements.
  • You have read a blog post about hiking on a mobile app of a publisher and followed a link to a recommended and related post. Your interactions will be recorded as showing that the initial hiking post was useful to you and that it was successful in interesting you in the related post. This will be measured to know whether to produce more posts on hiking in the future and where to place them on the home screen of the mobile app.
  • You were presented a video on fashion trends, but you and several other users stopped watching after 30 seconds. This information is then used to evaluate the right length of future videos on fashion trends.
  • The owner of an online bookstore wants commercial reporting showing the proportion of visitors who consulted and left its site without buying, or consulted and bought the last celebrity autobiography of the month, as well as the average age and the male/female distribution of each category. Data relating to your navigation on its site and to your personal characteristics is then used and combined with other such data to produce these statistics.
  • An advertiser wants to better understand the type of audience interacting with its adverts. It calls upon a research institute to compare the characteristics of users who interacted with the ad with typical attributes of users of similar platforms, across different devices. This comparison reveals to the advertiser that its ad audience is mainly accessing the adverts through mobile devices and is likely in the 45-60 age range.
  • A technology platform working with a social media provider notices a growth in mobile app users, and sees based on their profiles that many of them are connecting through mobile connections. It uses a new technology to deliver ads that are formatted for mobile devices and that are low-bandwidth, to improve their performance.
  • An advertiser is looking for a way to display ads on a new type of consumer device. It collects information regarding the way users interact with this new kind of device to determine whether it can build a new mechanism for displaying advertising on this type of device.
  • A travel magazine has published an article on its website about the new online courses proposed by a language school, to improve travelling experiences abroad. The school’s blog posts are inserted directly at the bottom of the page, and selected on the basis of your non-precise location (for instance, blog posts explaining the course curriculum for different languages than the language of the country you are situated in).
  • A sports news mobile app has started a new section of articles covering the most recent football games. Each article includes videos hosted by a separate streaming platform showcasing the highlights of each match. If you fast-forward a video, this information may be used to select a shorter video to play next.
  • An advertising intermediary delivers ads from various advertisers to its network of partnering websites. It notices a large increase in clicks on ads relating to one advertiser, and uses data regarding the source of the clicks to determine that 80% of the clicks come from bots rather than humans.
  • Clicking on a link in an article might normally send you to another page or part of the article. To achieve this, 1°) your browser sends a request to a server linked to the website, 2°) the server answers back (“here is the article you asked for”), using technical information automatically included in the request sent by your device, to properly display the information / images that are part of the article you asked for. Ruben Guerreiro (Movistar) secured the overall title in the Saudi Tour today, while Simone Consonni (Cofidis) claimed the final stage after overhauling Dylan Groenewegen (Jayco-AlUla) on a long and rising sprint finish in Maraya.

Things got argy-bargy when Groenewegen bumped shoulders with a couple of Jonathan Milan’s Bahrain Victorious teammates during chaotic, final kilometer became chaotic, forcing the Dutch rider to take up the pace. Yet, despite an effective lead-out from his teammate Luka Mezgec during the closing 300 meters, the Jayco-AlUla rider quickly faded, with Consonni taking advantage of his slipstream to seize the stage honors.

Meanwhile, Matteo Malucelli (Bingoal-WB) came up with a powerful sprint to take second place just behind Consonni, with Pascal Ackermann (UAE Team Emirates) piping Groenewegen for the final podium spot.

“I started at 300 meters and it felt like three kilometres. In the last 50 meters I was thinking about the team pursuit and I was wanting to push until the end. This win is really important for me and the team,” Consonni said after celebrating with his Cofidis teammates.

Race Highlights

It was widely anticipated that the final 143 kilometer stage five between AIUla Old Town and Maraya would be relatively incident free, with the Portuguese rider just needing to tackle a tricky looking gravel section before wrapping up the title.

Once the racing was under way, a breakaway involving Marcus Sander Hansen of Uno-X wearing the blue jersey as the most active rider established itself. Sander-Hansen was joined by two men from Italian outfit Corratec, Txomin Juraisti of Euskaltel-Euskadi, Kamil Malecki of Q36.5 and Ceriel Desal of Bingoal WB.

With 34 kilometers left to race, the breakaway had a lead of just one minute and the riders were fast approaching an eight kilometer gravel section. Meanwhile panic was starting to rip through the main field as the peloton approached the dirt road, with teams looking to protect their star men.

With 27 kilometers to go, and the breakaway were off the gravel section with the peloton hot in pursuit. All riders escaped relatively incident free from the particular section although the breakaways lead had been slashed to under 40 seconds.

With an eye to the finish, Mark Donovan of Q36.5 launched an attack looking to bridge across to the tiring leaders. Jayco AIUla assembled on the front of the peloton looking to up the tempo and potentially set up Dylan Groenewegen for another win.

As the breakaway reached the intermediate sprint point, the charge for the remaining points available was uncontested with Sander-Hansen snapping up what was left.

With 13 kilometers left to race, and the leaders were beginning to look over their shoulders. Desal and Sander Hansen were looking to push on, although with the peloton just 32 seconds behind, the catch seemed inevitable. Movistar were leading the charge in the peloton looking to ensure Guerreiro was protected until the end in what was shaping up to be a frantic sprint finish.

With 3.8 kilometers to go and the peloton were onto the leaders thanks to sterling work from Uno-X. At one kilometer remaining, once the peloton had the leaders back in their midst, Jayco AIUla forced Uno-X out of the way looking to begin their lead-out for Groenewegen.

Once Jayco AIUla began to accelerate, other riders including Astana’s Cees Bol and Cofidis’ Italian fast man Simone Consonni were onto them. Despite a powerful turn of speed from Luca Mezgec, Groenewegen mistimed his effort and kicked for the line too early on the uphill drag.

Bol and Consonni were straight onto the tiring Dutchman, with the Italian managing to push on and power away from his rivals to take a stunning win for Cofidis to wrap up the 2023 edition of the Saudi Tour.

ALULA, Saudi Arabia (VN) — Simone Consonni (Cofidis) kicked to victory Friday in an uphill finale to close out the five-day Saudi Tour, with Ruben Guerreiro (Movistar) wrapping up the GC.

Consonni powered past a gasping Dylan Groenewegen (Jayco-AlUlla) on the short but steep kicker to snag his third career pro win.

A gold medalist in the team pursuit in the 2021 Olympic Games on the track, Consonni timed his sprint perfectly.

“We came here with a strong team, and today to finish this incredible week with a victory, it was really hard, but I am very happy,” Consonni said. “For me it’s hard to beat guys like Groenewegen or Milan, so I am very happy today. Last season was the first year I could make the sprints on my own, and I proved I can win.”

Guerreiro, a winner of Thursday’s mountaintop finale, finished safely in the bunch to secure the GC for Movistar.

“We are very happy with this victory, and we can manage it to the finish,” Guerreiro said. “The final kilometer was tricky and technical, and I didn’t have the legs to finish in the top-10. I just finished safe on the wheel, and it’s the victory.”

A break nearly held clear, but the last rider was swept up as the bunch hit the approach toward the finish in front of the Maraya building, a large concert hall covered in mirrors.

The victory bodes well for Guerriero, who will race the Tour de France later this season.

“It’s special to win this race. In modern cycling it’s so hard to win a stage race,” he said. “To have this first race and the first victory of the season, it means a lot.

“I am 28, but I am born again in cycling. I feel like 20, I’ve had a lot of ups and downs, and I am stronger than ever,” he said. “I have big goals this season.”

Movistar’s Will Barta started his 2023 season off on a good note with a solid eighth place overall.

Racing in the Middle East continues later this month with the Oman Tour, where Mark Cavendish is expected to make his debut in Astana-Qazaqstan colors, and the UAE Tour, where Tadej Pogacar will open his 2023 campaign.

Ruben Guerreiro tames the rest

Ruben Guerreiro

Ruben Guerreiro out-foxed his rivals to win Thursday’s fourth stage and snag the overall lead with one stage remaining at the Saudi Tour.

The Movistar newcomer out-kicked Davide Formolo and Santiago Buitrago in the race’s only climbing finale to double up with the stage win and the leader’s jersey.

“It was truly a hard day, just like the climb. We were not sure how the legs would respond after three days of flats,” he said. “This Saudi Tour has been waiting, waiting, waiting, with the wind, and changing tempo constantly.

“UAE went with two, and they knew how to play their cards and make this ‘poker,'” he said. “I had to know how to play with the them. I had the legs to overcome them and I am very happy.”

Guerrero picked up time bonuses yesterday to put him in pole position for the jersey coming into Thursday’s 163km stage from Maraya to Skyviews of Harrat Uwayrid high above the AlUla desert landscapes.

Will Barta was fifth and climbed into seventh overall with one stage left to go.

“I wasn’t thinking that I was going to take the lead,” he said. “We have a great group here, and there’s only one stage left to go, so for sure we’ll fight to defend the lead.”

S3: Uno-X delivers big win with big U23 world TT champ

Soren Waerenskjold

ALULA, Saudi Arabia (VN) — Uno-X kept knocking at the door, and it finally opened Wednesday on stage 3 at the Saudi Tour.

After two fourth places in the opening stages of the five-day race, Søren Wærenskjold out-kicked the WorldTour pros to roar to his first pro victory.

The U23 world time trial champion opened up the afterburners at the end of the punchy final 3km and relegated yesterday’s winner Jonathan Milan (Bahrain Victorious) into second in the reduced bunch sprint.

“I knew it was a little of a steep climb, I surfed the wheels because I thought there would be some wind,” Wærenskjold said. “Today we went on the right side, and we have learned from the past few days when the wind was a factor in the finales.”

Wærenskjold’s win is a boost for Uno-X, which earned its bid to start its first Tour de France in July.

That’s still months away, and Wærenskjold was soaking up the glory that came with his inaugural pro victory.

“It’s fantastic for me to win here. I waited for this for a long time. I have been close in the U23 ranks, and it’s wonderful for the team,” he said. “We have two fourth places on the first stages, so to win here, it’s good for the morale. Tomorrow is Jakob’s turn and he can do well in the climb.”

The stage ended with a short but stinging climb, and overnight leader Dylan Groenewegen could not match the pace. Zdenek Stybar and Santiago Buitrago attacked, but the reduced bunch caught them under the red kite.

Milan slots into the overall lead, with Thursday’s climbing finale set to shake up the GC even more.

S2: Jonathan Milan squeaks in for the win

Jonathan Milan

Sometimes the waiting is the hardest part of a race.

Jonathan Milan stood on a desolate highway in the middle of the Saudi desert Tuesday. The young Italian didn’t want to celebrate too soon. It was too close to call with Dylan Groenewegen at the line.

After a few anguishing minutes, the call came through: Milan was the winner in a bike throw.

“This victory means a lot for me and the team,” Milan said. “Last year, I won two races in Croatia, and I really wanted to come out of the Saudi Tour with a victory. It was very close in the end. Last year was my first year here, and it was goal to win, and I am happy that I made it.”

Milan held on to fend off Groenewegen at the end of a very windy stage across the Saudi desert in stage 2 at the Saudi Tour. Cees Bol (Astana-Qazaqstan) kicked through in third.

The stage was the sum of many parts. The first part of the stage was with a belting tailwind. A U-turn and it was a full-block headwind of 45kph. The bunch trundled along at 20kph.

Once the course turned left, the peloton faced the full brunt of crosswinds and quickly fractured into bits.

On Monday, Bahrain Victorious kicked to second yesterday behind Groenwegen, and Tuesday it was Milan’s turn in the rotation. A winner of a gold medal in the team pursuit in 2021 on the boards in Tokyo, Milan is one of the highly touted younger riders coming up in Italy.

Groenewegen could only stew at a missed chance, but he retained the leader’s jersey as consolation.

“We are disappointed of course,” Groenewege said. “I started my sprint too late, and Milan came past me, and I tried to come back, but Milan was first. The boys did a good job today and did a great leadout. It was a big mistake on my part.”

S1: Groenewegen overcomes late puncture to win

stage 5 saudi tour

Dylan Groenewegen wasn’t about to let a late-race puncture derail his mission to win the opening stage of the Saudi Tour .

With new co-sponsor AlUla emblazoned on the jersey and with the opening stage driving south across the wide-open expanses of the AlUla region, Groenewegen was a man on a mission Monday.

Crosswinds and a pair of punctures made the opening stage more dramatic than the Jayco-AlUla sprinter would have liked. His teammates towed him back and he finished off the job to win in his 2023 season debut.

“This is a really important race for us to make our sponsor proud, so we can be really happy with today,” Groenewegen said. “It was really hectic in the final, and I had a flat tire in the wrong moment. With 10km it was still two minutes and the team was really working, but the team was really motivated to show our blue line.

“We waited for a good moment and then we went, and I saw nobody around me, so I knew I won.”

The win comes as a relief for Groenewegen, who was perhaps the only rider in the entire peloton with pressure to deliver.

The third edition of the Saudi Tour is drawing a solid mix of WorldTour and other level teams, but the five-day romp across the Saudi desert region has more of a spring training camp vibe.

Most of the bunch were debuting their respective seasons, and all eyes were on Jayco-AlUla.

The tourism board that promotes the AlUla destination stepped up in 2023 from partner to co-sponsor status. Not that leaving the race without a win would have been a disaster, but getting one certainly will make everyone breathe easier.

“We worked on the sprint train a bit during the camps. We have some new guys who are strong, and ‘Stybie’ is really strong from Quick-Step. I know if I stay on the wheel of Mezgec I will be OK,” Groenewegen said.

The stage didn’t come without its drama. Crosswinds kicked up and Groenewegen punctured twice, including a late-stage flat that put the team under pressure with 10km to go.

“The peloton split up, but the whole team waited for me, and they did a good job to bring me back,” he said. “We are really happy to win the first win of the season with the new blue train.”

The Saudi continues Tuesday with the 184km second stage from Winter Park to Shalal Sijlyat Rocks.

With one win in the pocket for Jayco-AlUla, the other sprinters here will want their turn.

Profiles & Route Saudi Tour 2023

Throughout five days the peloton will race in Saudi Arabia, for the Saudi Tour . It is the beginning of a long stint of racing in the Middle East from the 30th of January and the 3rd of February.

The race will feature five stages. Stage 4 will be the queen stage and the day where the climbers and puncheurs have to launch their main bids for the GC. All other stages are expected to end in a sprint, although stages 3 and 5 have hilltop finishes which could prove challenging and feature a wide variety of riders within a shot of victory. Of course, the wind may always play a part aswell and the race can be decided in each day.

Profiles & Route Saudi Tour 2023

The opening stage of the race will start in AlUla, a name now well known within pro cycling as they are the new title sponsor of Australian Team Jayco AlUla. It's a flat stage that is close to a complete straight line, set to finish in Khayber.

PREVIEW | Saudi Tour 2023 stage 1 - Groenewegen and Ackermann headline opening day for the sprinters

Profiles & Route Saudi Tour 2023

Stage two has a slightly hillier start with some bonus seconds available at the top of an early hilltop. Most of the stage however is pan-flat, with the Shalal Siljyat Rocks spot set to host the finale in what should be a bunch sprint.

PREVIEW | Saudi Tour 2023 stage 2 - Dylan Groenewegen looks to net second sprint win on flat finish

Profiles & Route Saudi Tour 2023

Stage three has a open finale, but most of the day is flat. Even though the profile hints at a lot of climbing, no tough gradients will be found at any time, and it's at the finish where the hurt may be put to the sprinters. A sprint is expected, however a 700 meter ramp at 7% ends already inside the final kilometer, the puncheurs and GC riders will have an opportunity to take time on the competition.

PREVIEW | Saudi Tour 2023 stage 3 - Hilly finish will see puncheurs and GC riders battle against sprinters

The queen stage. Stage 4 is a pan-flat day except for the finale, which will take place in the Skyviews of Harrat Uwayrid. The final 10 kilometers are flat but they come after a 7.5 kilometer climb at 5.9%. However, the final 2.9 kilometers of the ascent average 12% and will be able to see big differences created, likely where the overall classification will be decided aswell.

Profiles & Route Saudi Tour 2023

The final day into Maraya will be an interesting one, with only 142 kilometers in the menu but including a 7.3-kilometer long gravel sector. Most of the stage is flat, but the finale will see a slight uphill drag to the line.

Tour of Turkey: Tobias Lund Andresen wins stage 5 to retain overall lead

Fabio Jakobsen takes second behind DSM-Firmenich-PostNL teammate

Tobias Lund Andresen (DSM-Firmenich PostNL)

Tobias Lund Andresen (DSM-Firmenich-PostNL) took back-to-back wins at the Tour of Turkey after navigating the technical finale on stage 5 and powering to the line ahead of teammate Fabio Jakobsen.

The Dane timed his sprint perfectly, only hitting the front in the final 50 metres after the narrow, winding finish left the leadout trains fractured heading into Kuşadası.

Jakobsen was able to sit up and celebrate his teammate's win as they crossed the line for a great 1-2 finish ahead of Iúri Leitão (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA). It’s the Dutch team’s third win of the week and Lund Andresen’s second at professional level after his maiden victory yesterday.

Andresen also extended his lead at the head of the GC with more bonus seconds gained on the line. He takes a 14-second lead over Giovanni Lonardi (Polti-Kometa) heading into tomorrow’s summit finish stage from Kuşadası to Manisa where the overall standings will be completely changed and the climbers will take over.

“It’s unbelievable man. We were going for Fabio but he told me with 2km to go that I should just go with my own sprint,” a delighted Andresen said post-race.

“I had to open up early and it came so much as a shock that I almost forgot to celebrate. Then it's just incredible, I go over the finish line and I see Fabio come around me for second place.

“The whole team did amazing and we did amazing as planned. It just shows a new class to this team how we rode today.”

The fifth day of racing in Turkey saw a seven-man break again go up the road with 156km to go, Antonio Polga (Novo Nordisk), Mauro Verwilt (Tarteletto-Isorex), Oliver Mattheis (BIKE AID), Jacob Scott (REMBE Pro Cycling Team Sauerland), Genki Yamamoto (Kinan Racing), Michał Pomorski and Konrad Czabok (Mazowsze Serce Polski).

A more simple chase ensued for the peloton than on the previous stages with Bora-Hansgrohe and Astana Qazaqstan taking up most of the mantle along the 177.9km route from Bodrum to Kuşadası.

While the gap gradually came down throughout the mainly flat route, the break attacked itself over one of the final uncategorised climbs as riders tried to be the last men standing from the early move, but without much success.

Mattheis was the most active and last to be dragged back with 5km to go. Polti-Kometa put on the pace on each and every rise to try and dull the legs of pure sprinters Welsford, Cavendish and Jakobsen and give stage 3 winner Giovanni Lonardi the best chance.

A late attack was launched curiously by Danny van Poppel for Bora-Hansgrohe as they entered the very technical finishing sector where twists and turns strung out the peloton. But he was quickly pegged back by Bram Welten (DSM-Firmenich PostNL).

Andresen was originally on Welten’s wheel as he chased down the Dutchman but dropped himself back into the bunch to ensure he didn’t sprint too early. He stayed in the wheels until Rory Townsend (Q36.5) and Martijn Budding (TDT-Unibet) hit out for the line before he opened up behind.

With shoulders barging and the road narrowing at the front, the Dane stayed patient and eventually found a lane to sprint before speeding past a tiring Van Poppel and Budding with Jakobsen in his wheel.

PGA Tour players learn how much loyalty is worth in new equity program

Players who stayed loyal to the PGA Tour amid lucrative recruitment by Saudi-funded LIV Golf are starting to find out how much that loyalty could be worth.

The PGA Tour on Wednesday began contacting the 193 players eligible for the $930 million from a “Player Equity Program” under the new PGA Tour Enterprises .

The bulk of that money — $750 million — went to 36 players based on their career performance, the last five years and how they fared in a recent program that measured their star power.

How much they received was not immediately known. Emails were going out Wednesday afternoon and Thursday informing players of what they would get. One person who saw a list of how the equity shares were doled out said the names had been redacted. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because many details of the program were not made public.

The Telegraph reported Tiger Woods was to receive $100 million in equity and Rory McIlroy could get $50 million, without saying how it came up with those numbers.

Commissioner Jay Monahan outlined the first-of-its-kind equity ownership program in a Feb. 7 memo to players, a week after Strategic Sports Group became a minority investor in the new commercial PGA Tour Enterprises.

The private equity group, a consortium of professional sports owners led by the Fenway Sports Group, made an initial investment of $1.5 billion that could be worth $3 billion. The tour is still negotiating with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia — the financial muscle behind the rival LIV Golf league — as an investor.

Any deal with PIF would most certainly increase the value of the equity shares.

Another person with knowledge of the Player Equity Program, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the private nature of the dealings, said the equity money is not part of the SSG investment. That money was geared toward growth capital.

Golf.com received a series of informational videos on the Player Equity Program that was sent to players and reported only 50% of the equity would vest after four years, 25% more after six years and the rest of it after eight years.

It also reported how the 36 players from the top tier were judged on “career points,” such as how long they were full members, victories, how often they reached the Tour Championship and extra points for significant victories.

Jason Gore, the tour’s chief player officer, said in one of the videos, “It’s really about making sure that our players know the PGA Tour is the best place to compete and showing them how much the Tour appreciates them being loyal.”

Emails also were sent to 64 players who would share $75 million in aggregate equity based on the past three years, and $30 million to 57 players who are PGA Tour members. Also, $75 million in equity shares was set aside for 36 past players instrumental in building the tour.

The program has an additional $600 million in equity grants that are recurring for future PGA Tour players. Those would be awarded in amounts of $100 million annually started in 2025.

Players only get equity shares from one of the four tiers now, although everyone would be eligible for the recurring grants.

Even with equity ownership geared toward making the PGA Tour better, the concern was players questioning who got how much and whether they received their fair share.

LIV Golf lured away seven major champions dating to 2018 since it launched in 2022, all with guaranteed contracts and most of them believed to have topped $100 million.

McIlroy, playing this week in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, was asked how much would make players feel validated for their decision to stay with the PGA Tour.

“I think the one thing we’ve learned in golf over the last two years is there’s never enough,” McIlroy replied.

Saudi glory for Van Gils

February 5 th 2022 - 17:46 [GMT + 3]

The final stage of the 2022 Saudi Tour ended, as expected by a bunched sprint and Dylan Groenewegen proved he was the fastest man of the pack claiming a second success on the event. After his master piece on the decisive hilltop finish of stage 4, Maxim Van Gils wins this 2nd edition of the Saudi Tour. In the final general classification, the young Belgian wins by 36’’ over Santiago Buitrago and 48’’ over Rui Costa.

stage 5 saudi tour

For the final stage of the 2022 Saudi Tour, the 86 remaining riders had the opportunity to discover the splendid Old Town of Al Ula where the start was set. A quick stroll through the picturesque cobbled streets before taking off for a 138-km stage.

BATTLE FOR BLUE

Soon after crossing the km 0 line several riders blasted away. In vain at first. Eventually Jannik Steimle (QST) made his move. The German was later caught by three other men at km 14: Charmig, Blue jersey Urianstad (both UXT) and of course the untiring Tzortzakis ready to battle it out for the Most Active rider’s jersey. At km 25 their advantage over the pack had reached 1’55’’. A gap that was rapidly stabilised by the likes of teams Lotto-Soudal and BikeExchange-Jayco.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED FOR URIANSTAD

At the first Intermediate Active sprint, Tzortzakis captured 3 precious points ahead of his rival Urianstad while the pack had the escapees under control at 1’35’’. After so many efforts this week, Tzortzakis was the first to be dropped. The Greek was swallowed by the chasing pack with 25kms to go. The leading three could then still count on a 50’’ advantage.

STEIMLE LAST MAN CAUGHT

The second Intermediate sprint was claimed by Urianstad which meant he was guaranteed to win the Blue Jersey. Eventually only one man remained in the lead, Steimle, but he was finally caught with exactly one lap to go, on the line where the bonus sprint was claimed by Van Poppel (BOH).

GROENEWEGEN AGAIN

The pack mainly controlled by team Bahrain Victorious remained bunched all the way to the last straight. With just under 3kms to go, Caleb Ewan (LTS) lost all hopes of a second success when he punctured. Well led out by his new BikeExchange team mates, Dylan Groenewegen powered to the line beating Dan McLay (ARK) and Davide Ballerini (QST). The Dutchman wins again on this Saudi Tour and adds a 58th success to his career record. He also wins the Red jersey (point’s classification) ahead of Caleb Ewan by just one point.

VAN GILS, THE REVELATION

Perfectly surrounded by his Lotto-Soudal squad Maxim Van Gils made it to the finish within the peloton and that of course meant a first overall victory in the Middle-East. The young Belgian who had made the difference yesterday at the Skyviews of Harrat Uwayrid wins the general classification ahead of Santiago Buitrago (TBV) and Rui Costa. As well as the Green jersey, the 22-year-old also wins the White jersey for the best young rider. Martin Urianstad (UXT) finishes most active rider of this 2nd edition.

La Vuelta Femenina 2024: Grand Tour Season Begins with Exciting Lineup

A s of this Sunday, April 29, we’re officially in Grand Tour season, as the eight-stage Vuelta Femenina kicks off with a 16-kilometer team time trial in Valencia, Spain.

Jointly organized by Unipublic and Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), the same entities behind the men’s Vuelta a España , La Vuelta Femenina replaced the former one-day race, Challenge by La Vuelta, which previously ran concurrently with the men’s tour.

Last year’s race covered just over 740 kilometers over the course of its seven stages. It was won by Movistar’s Annemiek van Vleuten , who, with the win, became the first woman to win all three of the major women’s stage races (the Vuelta, along with the Tour de France Femmes, and the Giro Donne). She beat SD Worx’s Demi Vollering but just nine seconds. Trek-Segafredo’s Gaia Realini rounded out the podium in third.

But van Vleuten retired after last season, meaning there’s no chance for a repeat winner. And given the variety of winners we’ve seen in the women’s peloton this spring, this race is truly up for grabs.

This year’s race adds a stage, making it eight in total. All of them stick exclusively to Spain’s northwest and northcentral regions.

It kicks off with what should be a blistering team time trial over 16 lake-flat kilometers. From there, the second stage will take riders from Buñol to Moncofa over 118 hilly kilometers, including just one Category 3 climb. As that climb comes 40 kilometers from the finish, expect a bunch sprint.

The third stage is a 131-kilometer medium mountain stage that will take riders from Lucena to Teruel and feature another Category 3 ascent. Stage four covers 142 kilometers from Molina de Aragón to Zaragoza and is mostly downhill from start to finish.

The 113 kilometers of stage 5 are where the peloton first gets into proper mountains, with a pair of category 2 climbs—one of which provides the day’s summit finish—on the menu. Stage 6 is the opposite of stage 4, taking riders on a daylong gradual uphill from Tarazona to Laguna Negra, ending with a category 1 summit finish that very well could determine the race’s overall winner.

Stage 7 could be the last chance for the sprinters to leave their mark. However, the final 500 meters of the day’s 126 kilometers ramp up to 10%, so look for a punchier rider to take the win there.

The Vuelta Feminina will end with an 89-kilometer ride from Distrito Telefónca to ValdesquíMadrid. The ride features a pair of category-1 climbs, the last of which leads to the race’s final finish line.

Complete information on each stage can be found here .

How to Watch

The Vuelta Feminina will be broadcast in the US via Peacock , which costs $5.99 per month or $59.99 per year. In Canada, the race will be broadcast via FloSports , which costs $12.50 per month or $150 per year.

Riders to Watch

While the final roster for the race is yet to be final, several confirmed names promise another competitive edition. Among the riders targeting the general classification are Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift champion Demi Vollering of SD Worx-Protime, Gaia Realini of Lidl-Trek, who graced the podium last year, and the consistently impressive Kasia Niewiadoma of SD Worx-Protime. With the absence of retired defending champion Anemiek Van Vleuten and Vollering showing signs of wavering form this season, the battle for the coveted red jersey appears wide open.

Other riders to watch are the 2024 Tour of Flanders champion Elisa Longo Borghini of Lidl-Trek, Canyon//SRAM’s Ricarda Bauernfeind , and Mavi García of Liv Alula Jayco.

Demi Vollering, Kasia Niewiadoma, and Gaia Realini will battle for the red jersey on the challenging eight-stage tour across Spain.
