Tampa Bay’s Native American history can be traced as far back as 900 A.D. Multiple tribes inhabited the region until the arrival of Ponce de Leon in the 1500s when their populations began to decline. In the 1820s, the U.S. Army founded Fort Brooke to protect the city’s valuable harbor area.

Today, Tampa’s port is one of the largest in the nation due to its phosphate shipping and shrimp trading. Its culture is diverse and thriving, with influences from Latin and Caribbean communities. The annual Gasparilla festival, which celebrates the legend of pirate José Gaspar, attracts half a million people to the city every year.

For a fun way to see the city, try a water taxi, which will take you to various stops along the water.

Where can I go shopping near the Tampa cruise port?

International Plaza is an upscale shopping destination with both brand-name and luxury stores, plus a number of world-class restaurants, located about 20 minutes away from the port. For upscale boutiques in a picturesque setting, head to Hyde Park Village, just 10 minutes from the port.

What are local currency and tipping customs?

Tampa, along with the rest of the United States, uses the U.S. Dollar. You’ll find ATMs throughout the city’s most-visited destinations and neighborhoods. Credit cards are widely accepted, though it’s always wise to have some cash on hand. At restaurants and bars, a 15% to 20% tip is suggested.

What to do before or after your cruise from port tampa bay.

By Janet K. Keeler

Planning things to do before or after cruising from Port Tampa Bay is as fun to think about as the much-anticipated tropical cruise itself. The Tampa cruise port is conveniently located in a bustling area of Tampa, full of shops, attractions and restaurants, so the choices are plentiful.

The Tampa cruise port is one of the anchors of the Channelside District which puts cruisers within walking distance of a variety of things to do. And by variety, we mean good eats, too. The district is loaded with food options including Michelin-honored restaurants including Predalina and The Pearl .

Just a few blocks away from where you will embark at the Tampa cruise port is Sparkman Wharf , a tangle of restaurants and bars with outdoor seating and live music. Yeah, we know the cruise ships offer an endless buffet, but you’ll get some local flavors—charred octopus Greek salad at Swigamajig —at Sparkman plus the chance to blow off some calories on the Splitsville bowling lanes.

Amalie Arena , the home of the Tampa Bay Lightning hockey team, is within walking distance, too, and you might be able to sync your cruise with a game or even a concert. Madonna, Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny, Billy Joel and Megan Thee Stallion are just some of the acts that have played the venue recently.

For those who want to explore farther afield there are the beautiful Gulf of Mexico beaches on the other side of Tampa Bay. Wide beaches with white sand are the hallmark from Clearwater south to Fort De Soto Park.

There’s plenty more beyond eating, drinking and sunning to discover before or after your cruise out of Port Tampa.

The Florida Aquarium Tampa has resources for accessible access.

Explore the Underwater World

In the shadow of the big cruise ships at the Tampa cruise port is the Florida Aquarium which offers as much intergenerational fun as can be found aboard any cruise ship. The aquarium is one of those educational places that masquerades as a good time. Who wouldn’t want to peer through the glass wall at what baby alligators do underwater? They hardly look like the giant prehistoric reptiles that they will become. The exhibits cover Florida’s wetlands, beaches and coral reef exhibits. Just the right place to get cruisers in the mood for their tropical sea adventure.

Los bailarines de flamenco entretienen a los invitados en el restaurante Columbia de Ybor City

Experience Latin Culture

A few miles from the Port Tampa Bay cruise port is the lively Tampa neighborhood, Ybor City and a street car from the cruise port area will get you there. In the early 1900s, Ybor was the country’s center of cigar production and the city’s Cuban immigrant heart. The cigar factories have dwindled to just one— J.C. Newman Cigar Co .— and visitors can watch the action and take a one-hour guided tour of the facility. There are a few storefronts along Ybor’s Seventh Avenue where you can watch cigar rollers. A self-guided GPS-based tour can tell you more and there are even guided night ghost walks. Stop in Florida’s oldest restaurant, the Columbia , for Cuban coffee and a 1905 salad, named after the year the doors opened.

Busch Gardens - Kumba

Ride a Roller Coaster

Tampa’s popular theme park, Busch Gardens , is less than 10 miles from the cruise port and is a great place to take the kids if you’ve got an extra day. There are 10(!) roller coasters for thrillseekers ranging from Iron Gwazi, the world’s fastest and highest hybrid coaster, to Cheetah Hunt, the park’s longest coaster.  Five of them turn riders upside down. There are other rides too, like the Serengeti Flyer which soars over one of the animal encampments. The Serengeti Express train ride covers similar ground but keeps you on the ground. Besides rides and attractions, there are animals, animals, animals. More than 200 species of animals including penguins, hippos, rhinos, giraffes and more. Lots of opportunities for interaction and education. Busch means beer and there’s a taproom too.

Ride the Pirate Water Taxi

Tampa is steeped in pirate culture thanks to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers football team and the annual Gasparilla Pirate Fest in the weeks leading up to Easter. Think New Orleans Mardi Gras on the water with a pirate ship invasion and plenty of costumed rogues of the sea throwing beads in multiple parades. The Pirate Water Taxi takes its lead from the theme and plies the Hillsborough River and nearby channels much like a hop-on, hop-off tour bus. It makes 16 stops and No. 1 is at the Florida Aquarium, a quick walk from the Tampa Bay cruise port and parking. At stop #9, you can hop off and get a close up view of the docked Jose Gasparilla II pirate ship that leads the pirate fest invasion. Get off at  #12 and amble along the Tampa RiverWalk until you get to the Armature Works food hall to get locally brewed coffee or a bite to eat from one of the many vendors. Armature is stop No. 16 where you can board the water taxi again for the ride back to the cruise port.

Get Artsy across the Bay

Across Tampa Bay from Tampa, downtown St. Petersburg boasts five museums and a number of galleries, including one that houses the work of famed glass artist Dale Chiluly . It’s just across the street from the Morean Art Center which has rotating exhibits and a fine gift shop. The museums include the Museum of Fine Arts St. Petersburg and its collection spanning 4,000 years; the Dali Museum which has an impressive collection of the Spanish surrealist’s master works; the James Museum of Western Art and its rotating and permanent collection of art that celebrates the American West; the Florida Holocaust Museum dedicated to preserving the memory of the Holocaust and promoting tolerance, and the Museum of the American Arts and Crafts Movement and its impressive collection of furniture and decorative arts. There are parking facilities downtown, and an Uber or Lyft ride is one way to cross the bay. The Cross Bay Ferry to downtown St. Petersburg is another alternative and the pick up spot in Tampa is about a mile from the cruise port.

Places to Remember

Bradenton Beach

Rakeyah Bean, 7, has help from her mother, Roterra Bean, both of Bradenton, casting their line on the water at the Riverwalk in downtown Bradenton. The unique outdoor gathering place features a walking trail overlooking the Manatee River. The elongated park spans 1.5 miles with a myriad of supported outdoor activities.

Carnival cruise ship rescues nearly 30 people from adrift vessel

tampa cruises schedule

A Carnival Cruise Line ship rescued nearly 30 people who were stuck at sea on Sunday.

The crew on Carnival Paradise saved 28 Cuban nationals who were signaling for help on a vessel that was adrift around 2:30 p.m. The cruise ship was headed from Tampa, Florida, to Roatan in Honduras at the time.

“The bridge team onboard spotted the vessel and turned the ship around to rescue them,” Carnival said in a news release . “All were taken aboard, given food and were seen by the medical team.” The cruise line also notified the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Key West and officials in Roatan.

The Coast Guard did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.

The ship was set to visit Roatan on Monday. Carnival Paradise is on a five-day Caribbean cruise that departed from Tampa on Saturday, according to CruiseMapper .

The news comes after Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Apex ship rescued seven people in a small vessel adrift between Cuba and Mexico earlier this month. Another Carnival ship, Carnival Jubilee, also rescued two people stuck in a kayak off the coast of Mexico’s Isla Mujeres in January.

President Joe Biden made a campaign visit to Tampa this afternoon, where he focused on abortion and tried to tie rival Donald Trump to abortion restrictions in the state and across the country.

Biden spoke at Hillsborough Community College’s Dale Mabry campus in Tampa. Near the campus, dozens of demonstrators gathered to protest the president over the United States’ support of Israel’s war against Hamas, the death of civilians in Gaza and other issues.

panthers-tkachuk-getty.jpg

The 2024 NHL Playoffs have officially arrived, providing some of the most heart-pounding action in the sports world. With the Vegas Golden Knights set to defend their title, the chase for Lord Stanley's Cup is underway.

The New York Rangers captured the Presidents' Trophy with the best record throughout the 2023-24 regular season. When the regular season concluded, the Rangers finished with a 55-23-4 record (114 points) as they just edged out the Dallas Stars for that honor.

The structure of the playoffs is as follows:

  • The division winner with the most points in each conference will face the second Wild Card team in the first round. The division winner with fewer points in each conference will match up with the top Wild Card team in the first round.
  • Each series will be a best-of-seven format.
  • Home-ice advantage goes to the team with the top seed in the first two rounds of the playoffs. The team with the most points in the regular season has home-ice advantage in the conference finals and Stanley Cup Final.
  • The Stanley Cup Playoffs will begin on April 20 with a matchup between the Carolina Hurricanes and New York Islanders .

Below is how you can follow each series in the first round along with updating results and scores from each game. Bookmark this page for the duration of the playoff run to stay up to date with everything on the ice.

Bleacher Report Grades Buccaneers' First Round Draft Pick of Duke's Graham Barton

Here's what critics and pundits are saying about Tampa Bay's pick.

  • Author: Caleb Skinner

In this story:

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers entered the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft with a number of needs and when it came time for them to pick at 26th overall, everything had sort of played itself out ahead of them for them to land former Duke Blue Devil Graham Barton.

Barton will immediately be able to fill a need for the Bucs as he has the versatility to play any position along the offensive line, but it appears that he will likely slot in at center or guard in the red and pewter.

The pick wasn't one that drew gasps from the fanbase or those even watching the NFL Draft, but it is a huge win for a team that struggled to run the ball last season.

Following the completion of the first round, Bleacher Report graded out each team's first-round selection , and the Bucs received a B grade for their pick of Barton at No. 26. Here's a little bit of what they said about Barton:

"So, Graham Barton carrying a first-round grade throughout the predraft process is a big deal. But two primary factors make him deserving of that.

First, Barton's positional flexibility makes him one of the class' most valuable blockers. The 6'5", 313-pound prospect began his collegiate career as Duke's starting center during his true freshman campaign. He then bumped out to left tackle for the last two seasons before declaring early for the NFL draft. He has the ability to play all five offensive line positions if necessary.

Second, the two-time first-team All-ACC selection is an exceptional athlete. Barton didn't participate in testing drills at the NFL Scouting Combine since he entered the offseason with an injured ankle. But he impressed scouts with a strong showing at Duke's pro day, where he posted a sub-5.0-second 40-yard dash, 4.54-second short shuttle and 7.31 three-cone effort, per ESPN's Jordan Reid."

They are correct in what they say here about Barton. Barton played mostly OT during his time at Duke, but he possesses the unique ability to play anywhere along the line. It will be interesting to see where the Bucs exactly want him, but Jason Licht has heavily implied in his press conference after the draft that the team intends to play him at center.

How to watch NHL playoffs free online: TV, schedule, time

  • Updated: Apr. 25, 2024, 5:18 p.m. |
  • Published: Apr. 25, 2024, 1:02 p.m.

The NHL first-round playoff action continues tonight with two more games.

One game will be televised on TBS, and the other will be shown on ESPN 2. NHL fans can watch the action from both teams online for free by utilizing the free trial offered by DirecTV Stream. An alternative for hockey fans is a discounted Sling subscription, which has all the channels for the NHL and NBA playoffs.

(D1) Florida Panthers vs (WC1) Tampa Bay Lightning

The first game tonight will be the Florida Panthers facing the Tampa Bay Lightning at 6 p.m. CT on TBS, and it will be game 3 in the series. The Panthers currently have a 2-0 series lead heading into tonight’s game at Tampa Bay, with the first two games both ending in narrow 3-2 victories. So, the third game should keep the intensity high because of the highly competitive nature of the first two games.

The Lightning will be trying to defend their home ice over the next two games and even the series at 2-2. Game 2 was an especially difficult loss for the Lightning, as they were defeated in overtime. Despite finishing the regular season with seven fewer wins, the Lightning have shown they are capable of competing with the Panthers in the series.

(D2) Carolina Hurricanes vs (D3) New York Islanders

The Carolina Hurricanes take on the New York Islanders in the other NHL game tonight at 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPN 2. The Hurricanes currently have a 2-0 series lead heading into game 3 tonight in New York. The Islanders have lost each of the first two games by two goals, but they held a 3-0 lead during the second period of game 2. Heading into the third period, the Islanders still had a 3-1 lead over the Hurricanes. However, the Hurricanes battled back by scoring four goals and holding the Islanders to zero goals in the final 20 minutes.

The loss was crushing for the Islanders, as the series could have easily been tied 1-1 heading to New York for the next two games. Despite the tough loss, the Islanders are looking to defend their home ice and claw their way back into the series.

There is plenty of sports content for fans to watch tonight, including the NHL playoffs, NBA playoffs , and the 2024 NFL draft. All of these events can be viewed for free with DirecTV Stream’s free trial , or fans can purchase a discounted Sling subscription to watch everything live.
