PS4 Review - 'Tennis World Tour'

By joseph doyle on march 14, 2019 @ 12:00 a.m. pdt.

tennis world tour 1

When I was teaching middle schoolers a few years back, I'd frequently ask them what they did the prior night. This would breed a host of responses, including watching their siblings to hanging out with friends. The most notable (and pertinent) would be, "playing the game." This flummoxed me when I first heard it. How could someone, even a child, be so vague while still using a direct article? After further inquiry, I figured out this could mean a few things: They were either playing a Call of Duty title, Madden or NBA 2K . One way or the other, sports games are action-packed, glitzy and prolific enough to be two out of the only three games the kids played. Tennis, on the other hand, doesn't get this same attention, and it's perhaps usually recognized in video game form through the Mario games or in Wii Sports . With no solid foundation (other than perhaps the Top Spin series), Breakpoint Studios sought to make a more realistic modern tennis game. While the attempt was a noble one, almost everything about Tennis World Tour falls flat, from clunky controls to uninspiring gameplay and lackluster audio and visuals.

tennis world tour 1

The controls in Tennis World Tour are a challenge, to put it lightly. The tutorials explain the different hits and how to move around with relative clarity, but using the analog stick and face buttons is not necessarily a challenge to do or describe. Where the waters become murky is when you expect to use both at the same time. The game (through the voice of an anonymous coach, which is distressing in its own right, but I digress) shows you that you can affect where the ball lands by using the left analog stick while pressing whichever type of hit you'd like to use (drop shot, lob, normal, slice). This is straightforward enough in description, but it works poorly. During one of the trainings, you were expected to hit five balls into various parts of the court, which should be simple enough, but took over 10 minutes to complete.

The level of accuracy expected from the player in this scenario is ludicrous and incredibly frustrating. Because you're using the left analog stick to both run and direct the ball, you can miss very easily. Want to run one way and hit the ball another? Sorry, your player just stopped going for the ball altogether, and you lost a point, despite having pressed the face button close enough to return (a finicky distance). On top of this, your motion feels incredibly stilted, and your player jerks around from side to side like a Game & Watch character as you switch directions. You're also supposed to charge your shot (holding the face button) if you want it to be more powerful, which seemed to have no actual bearing on whether or not the opponent hit it. Overall, the controls in Tennis World Tour are poor and detract from the experience, even when you master their jankiness.

tennis world tour 1

When you master the jankiness of the controls, it's interesting to see how the AI reacts. The AI players in Tennis World Tour are truly an annoying sort who feel like an anthropomorphic wall at times. They will return almost every single shot you throw at them, resulting in many points that end up with 30 shots between the both of you or getting as high as 80, like I did during one unfortunate bout. (The game then gave me an Achievement, rather than apologizing for being janky.) I appreciate the developer forgoing realism for more fun, continual gameplay, but this is ridiculous, especially when the majority of points in a typical tennis match are settled between 0 and 4 hits between the players . The answer for an effective and fun bout lies somewhere between 4 and 30 (God forbid you do 80 yourself) hits, which is long enough to feel fulfilling.

When you finally master the controls and learn about the AI's proclivities to hit the ball at all costs, you can trick it into giving you all the points with two strategies: a short hit followed by a lob, which sends the ball to a spot in the back where the AI will never hit it; or hitting the ball into opposing sides until the AI overextends and misses the next hit. Tennis World Tour 's AI goes from frustrating to laughable in a second, and that makes the game both aggravating and boring.

tennis world tour 1

All of these issues compound the strange gameplay mechanics in Tennis World Tour. One of the more interesting and intriguing choices the developer made was including light RPG mechanics in the career mode. For example, you gain points that you can spend on attack, defense, or serving when you level up your character. You can likewise unlock different coaches who will boost these skills in different ways as you level up with them. Furthermore, as you play and progress, you unlock cards that give you perks in different scenarios, such as gaining accuracy when you have low stamina, or having a +10 stamina boost during decisive points, etc. While these are really cool and interesting ways to keep a relatively repetitive game like tennis fresh, this aspect of the title doesn't shine due to the AI and control woes. You lose the ability to detect a boost to accuracy when the whole system of aiming is difficult to master. Likewise, stamina boosts are lost when you have long point rallies that result in both you and your opponent losing all stamina due to sprinting and power-hitting for 80 straight hits. The interesting gameplay mechanics lose out to the title's larger issues.

There is very little to say about the visuals and audio of Tennis World Tour . The graphics are passable; they're nothing to write home about but nothing egregious, either. The character designer is fun but lackluster. It reminds me of the one found in Oblivion , a game that came out over 10 years ago. The grunts of the players and smacks of the racket against a racing ball are also fine, and they help create more realism in the game, which is appreciated. The music, on the other hand, feels outdated and boring. The light electronic house music is reminiscent of the intros to the original Jason Bourne movie trilogy — a little slow and mundane for a sports game. Overall, the audio and visuals are innocuous in that they don't detract from the experience but don't improve it, either.

tennis world tour 1

Tennis World Tour simply doesn't deliver on the experience it wants to give us. While it offers some interesting and innovative gameplay aspects, it's either irksome or overly simple. The most redeeming quality of the game is that it shows potential for future releases if Breakpoint has the opportunity. With some fine-tuning, Tennis World Tour could easily work its way up to passable — and perhaps even more. According to BigBen Interactive, the game's publisher,  the game was shipped only being "20% finished." While this choice is not too alien to those of us steeped in the gaming world, this detail is evident in every aspect of the game. Maybe one day the developer will have the opportunity to show us a completed idea, but based on the current build, Tennis World Tour is disappointing.

Score: 3.5/10

The 14 countries who have produced ATP world No 1 singles players

Pete Sampras Rafael Nadal

It is one of the achievements that every aspiring tennis player dreams of.

There is perhaps no greater challenge in tennis than becoming a world No 1, with a huge mental and physical effort required over 52 weeks of the year to reach the summit of the sport.

In the five decades since the ATP was first launched, only 28 men have ever climbed to the top spot, spread across 14 countries.

We look at every country that has ever produced an ATP world No 1 singles player.

United States – six players

Perhaps the most dominant nation in tennis history, the US has produced a staggering six ATP world No 1 singles players – two more than any other nation.

With 286 weeks in the top spot, only two players have ever spent more time as men’s singles world No 1 than 14-time major winner Pete Sampras .

Not too far behind him is eight-time Grand Slam winner Jimmy Connors , who spent 268 weeks as world No 1, while his great rival John McEnroe reigned for a total of 170 weeks.

Tennis icon Andre Agassi spent 101 weeks as No 1, while Jim Courier held the top spot for 58 weeks, and Andy Roddick reigned for 13 weeks.

Spain – four players

Another nation with a huge tennis history, Spanish tennis success has been defined by one man in recent times: Rafael Nadal .

The 22-time Grand Slam champion has spent a total of 209 weeks as world No 1, with only five men reigning longer than him.

However, it hasn’t always just been about Nadal – particularly in recent times, with Carlos Alcaraz having already spent 36 weeks as the youngest male No 1 in tennis history.

Alcaraz’s coach Juan Carlos Ferrero spent eight weeks at the top spot during his career, while Carlos Moya also made it to No 1 for two weeks.

Read More:  Carlos Alcaraz shares fitness update as he names his four main challengers for Madrid Open title

Sweden – three players.

Sweden has been comparatively starved of tennis success in recent times, but the nation has produced three of the greatest ATP players in history.

The most famous is arguably Bjorn Borg , a true tennis icon who won an astonishing 11 Grand Slam singles titles – and spent 109 weeks as world No 1 across the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Borg was quickly followed by seven-time major winner Mats Wilander , who held the No 1 ranking for 20 weeks during his career.

And Wilander was in turn followed by Stefan Edberg , a man who coupled his six major titles with 72 weeks in the top spot.

Australia – three players

Another nation that has produced countless great champions over the years, Australia has produced three world No 1 players in the ATP Tour era.

The longest-reigning of those was two-time Slam winner Lleyton Hewitt , formerly the youngest No 1 in ATP history who held that ranking for a total of eight weeks.

Seven-time major singles champion John Newcombe spent eight weeks at the top towards the beginning of the ATP era, while Pat Rafter was No 1 for a solitary week in 1999.

Russia – three players

One of the defining storylines of tennis over the past 25 to 30 years has been the rise of Russian tennis, with the nation producing multiple Slam winners across the men’s and women’s games.

And their first-ever No 1 on either tour was Yevgeny Kafelnikov , a two-time Grand Slam winner and Olympic gold medallist who held the top ranking for six weeks in 1999.

He was swiftly followed by another two-time major champion, Marat Safin , who himself reigned for nine weeks across three different spells.

In recent years Daniil Medvedev has followed in their footsteps, with the former US Open winner having spent 16 weeks as world No 1 to date.

Czechia/Czechoslovakia – one player

Czechia has well and truly punched above its weight when it comes to producing tennis talent, and few could match Ivan Lendl during his prime.

The most successful male player of the 1980s in terms of the number of Grand Slam singles titles won, Lendl swept eight majors during his career, reaching a further 11 finals.

His dominance saw him spend a staggering 270 weeks as the world No 1 throughout his career, a total that only three other men have ever been able to beat.

Germany – one player

Germany is another country that has consistently produced tennis talent but in the men’s game, one man has stood above them all during the ATP era.

One of the most popular and revered players of his generation, few have ever been able to emulate the achievements of Boris Becker .

Playing in one of the most competitive eras in tennis history, Becker claimed an impressive six major titles – and also spent 12 weeks as number.

Great britain – one player.

One of the greatest British sportspeople of all time, what Andy Murray  achieved in an era defined by the ‘Big Three’ deserves huge acclaim.

The Brit will likely be celebrated for his most memorable triumphs, notably his two Wimbledon triumphs, two Olympic gold medals, and his groundbreaking US Open win.

But Murray also managed to break the ‘Big Three’ stranglehold and reach the world No 1 ranking, holding that position for 41 weeks.

Switzerland – one player

There are no prizes for guessing who Switzerland’s one ATP world No 1 is.

One of the greatest players of all time, Roger Federer become one of the most beloved sportspeople of his generation throughout his extraordinary career – winning 20 major titles.

And he spent a staggering 310 weeks as world No 1 throughout his career, with his run of 237 consecutive weeks at the top during the 2000s the longest run of anyone in history.

Read More:  Roger Federer makes brutally honest admission when asked if he misses tennis

Austria – one player.

One of the best clay court players of the 1990s, few could match Thomas Muster on the dirt when he was at the peak of his powers.

The Austrian is perhaps best remembered for winning the 1995 French Open, though also won multiple Monte Carlo Masters and Italian Open titles during his career.

And he also spent time as the world No 1 during the peak of his career, holding that ranking for six weeks.

Chile – one player

A pioneer of Latin American tennis, Marcelo Rios became the first player from South America to be ranked world No 1 when he reached the top spot for six weeks in 1998.

An Australian Open finalist in 1998, Rios is the only man in history to reach world No 1 and not win a Slam title, though he did win 18 ATP titles throughout his career.

And, at 5’9, he has also made history by being the shortest No 1 player in ATP history.

Serbia – one player

Arguably the greatest player in the history of men’s tennis, it is sometimes hard to find the words to sum up what Novak Djokovic has achieved during his career.

The Serbian has won a record 24 Grand Slam titles, 40 Masters 1000 titles, and seven ATP Finals titles during his dominant career.

But it is perhaps his astonishing 422 weeks – and counting – as world No 1 that may be his greatest achievement.

Djokovic is now the oldest No 1 in history, and has more weeks at No 1 than any other male or female player.

Read More:  The 9 oldest No 1s in men’s tennis: Novak Djokovic breaks Roger Federer’s record

Brazil – one player.

One of the most popular tennis players of all time, Gustavo Kuerten is beloved in all corners of the tennis world – particularly in Brazil, and in Paris – where he won three French Open titles.

Kuerten was unseeded and had never won an ATP title when he claimed his first Roland Garros crown in 1997, following that up with victories in 2000 and 2001.

His success in the late 1990s and early 2000 was capped off by reaching the world No 1 ranking for the first time at the end of 2000, ultimately holding the top spot for 43 weeks across three spells.

Romania – one player

Ilie Nastase will forever stay in the history books as the first-ever player to be an official world No 1 on the ATP Tour.

A US Open and French Open champion during his prime, the Romanian was the first man to hold the top spot when the rankings began on 23 August 1973.

And in total the Romanian held that top ranking for 40 weeks, to this day remaining the only man from his country to reach the highest peak of the ATP Rankings.

Garbine Muguruza: Former Wimbledon champion announces retirement from tennis

Former world number one and two-time Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza has confirmed her retirement from tennis with immediate effect.

The 30-year-old, born in Venezuela, announced her decision at a press conference in Madrid on Saturday.

“I feel I am ready to retire, to open this new chapter in my life. A new era, a new life,” she said.

“I was nervous, wanting to say it. I feel good, even if the word retired is a bit strong,” she said.

She retires as the second-most successful female Spanish singles player of all time, behind Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, who won four singles Grand Slam titles.

Muguruza defeated one of the Williams sisters for both of her titles, at the time becoming only the second tennis player born in the 1990s to win a Major.

She defeated Serena in the 2016 French Open as part of a run of 14 consecutive sets won, having lost to her in the previous year’s Wimbledon final. She then defeated Venus at the 2017 Wimbledon — including a final set bagel — before spending four weeks at world number one later that year.

Muguruza has frequently described the Williams sisters as “role models” for her career since she was growing up, not just in terms of the standards they set for women’s tennis, but for developing a style of play built on power and front-foot aggression that the Spaniard would make her own throughout her career. Writing in El País in 2022, upon Serena’s retirement, she said that Williams “created a “before and after” that forced us to be better”.

Muguruza reached at least the final in three of the four Grand Slam tournaments, losing out to American Sofia Kenin at the 2020 Australian Open. Her best results at the US Open came in 2017 and 2021, but she only made the fourth round on both occasions. In 2021, she recorded a surprise victory at the WTA Tour Finals, entering as the fifth seed and coming out on top of a showcase of that witheringly powerful game .

Muguruza’s last match took place at a WTA 250 event in Lyon, where the then world No 82 lost in straight sets to qualifier Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic; her last Grand Slam appearance came in a straight-sets defeat to Belgium’s Elise Mertens in the first round of the 2023 Australian Open.

The two-time Grand Slam champion took an extended break from competition in April last year, to spend more time with her friends and family, and has not played since. In October 2023, she said that “tennis has no place in my routine.”

“I still pay attention to my teammates, from time to time I can play but not intensely but more for fun. It doesn’t occupy my mind, my day or my routines.”

Garbiñe Muguruza, Two-Time Grand Slam Champion, Retires from Professional Tennis

  • Author: Tim Capurso

Two-time Grand Slam champion and former WTA world No. 1 Garbine Muguruza announced her retirement from professional tennis at a press conference in Madrid on Saturday.

"I wanted to tell you that the time has come to say goodbye. It has been a long, beautiful career, full of moments and anecdotes, I could tell a thousand. I feel that the time has come to retire, to open a new chapter of my life, a new era," Muguruza said.

Muguruza, 30, last played in the WTA in January 2023 before announcing that she was taking a leave of absence from the sport to spend more time with friends and family last April.

The Venezuelan native played 10 seasons in professional tennis, winning the 2016 French Open and 2017 Wimbledon titles while spending four weeks as the world No. 1 back in '17. She is the only player in the history of women's tennis to defeat both Serena and Venus Williams in Grand Slam finals.

Muguruza retires with 10 WTA singles titles and $24,813,379 in career prize money.

DP World Tour, four leaders with Rory McIlroy

T he Zurich Classic 2024 is underway, featuring a unique format with teams of two players. Currently, a quartet of couples is commanding the leaderboard in New Orleans, all tied with an impressive score of -11. Leading the pack are Ryan Brehm/Mark Hubbard, Ben Kohles/Patton Kizzire, Aaron Rai/David Lipsky, and Rory McIlroy/Shane Lowry.

Zurich Classic, results

Close behind in fifth place at -10 are Davis Thompson/Andrew Novak, Thomas Detry/Robert MacIntyre, and Cameron Champ/M.J. Daffue. Notably, American pairs dominate this tier, with the exception of Rai (English), McIlroy and Lowry (Irish), Detry (Belgian), and MacIntyre (Scottish).

The field tightens with a multitude of duos tied at -9, totaling 13 pairs with identical scores. Among them, the all-Canadian team of Corey Conners/Taylor Pendrith stands out, alongside Johnson/Palmer, Lashley/Campos, and Taylor/Hadwin.

Meanwhile, Francesco Molinari and Luke Donald find themselves in the midst of the pack, currently tied for twenty-ninth place at -7. It's a promising start for the duo comprised of Italy's sole Major winner and the renewed European Ryder Cup captain.

The Zurich Classic of New Orleans is a prestigious golf tournament held annually on the PGA Tour, taking place at TPC Louisiana in Avondale, Louisiana, a suburb southwest of New Orleans. With a history spanning 86 years since its inception in 1938, the tournament has been a staple in the golfing calendar, transitioning to an event held in early to mid-spring since 1958.

Zurich Insurance Group serves as the primary sponsor, with the tournament organized by the Fore!Kids Foundation. Over the years, the prize money for the Zurich Classic has seen significant growth, reflecting the tournament's stature in the golfing world.

The first prize crossed the five-figure mark in 1965, soared into six figures in 1988, and surpassed the million-dollar milestone in 2006. In 2022, the winning team split a staggering $2.39 million in prize money. A notable evolution in the Zurich Classic occurred in 2017 when it transformed into a team event, featuring eighty pairs of golfers.

Each team consists of one player chosen from the Tour priority rankings, with their partner either being a PGA Tour member or earning entry through a sponsor exemption. The tournament adopts a stroke play format, with alternate shot (foursome) play in the first and third rounds and better ball (fourball) in the second and fourth rounds.

The cut line typically falls at 33 teams, plus ties. Winners of the Zurich Classic not only secure 400 FedEx Cup points and two-year exemptions but also forego Masters invitations and do not earn world ranking points for the event.

In 2018, a tweak was made to the format, with fourball play introduced in the first and third rounds, while alternate shot format was reserved for the second and fourth rounds. This adjustment added further intrigue to an already exciting tournament, capturing the attention of golf enthusiasts worldwide.
