2023 Australian Tourism Exchange opens on the Gold Coast

2023 Australian Tourism Exchange, ATE23

The 43rd edition of Tourism Australia’s largest annual trade event, the Australian Tourism Exchange 2023 (ATE23), has officially opened on the Gold Coast with around 2,300 delegates expected to take part in the event at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre.

This year ATE has returned to its traditional format for the first time since 2019, with four days of appointments. The tourism travel show has taken place in a condensed hybrid format over the past two years.

Tourism Australia Managing Director Phillipa Harrison said the first full ATE in years is an important milestone for the Australian tourism industry as it continues to rebuild off the back of the most challenging few years in its history.

“International travellers are returning to our shores but the competition for the global tourism dollar is now greater than ever before which is why business-to-business events, such as ATE, are so important,” Harrison said.

“ATE brings together tourism businesses, tourism wholesalers and retailers from around the world for four days of appointments as well as networking events, while our international buyers get the chance to experience our world class tourism offerings first-hand.”

“The delegates visit from more than 30 countries, and we know once they have seen what Australia has to offer for themselves, they will be well placed to tell travellers why Australia is the best place in the world for their next holiday.”

Tourism and Events Queensland CEO Patricia O’Callaghan said the whole state was ready to welcome ATE delegates in what is another important step forward in our international recovery.

“ATE is our primary opportunity to put Queensland in front of crucial international trade and media partners and we have an incredible program lined up.”

“The industry has continued to invest whilst borders were closed and as a result we have opened to  the world with billions of dollars of new infrastructure, products and experiences that have been completed or under construction across the State.”

“There is strong enthusiasm for this event in Queensland and for these partners to arrive and see first-hand our world-class tourism experiences.”

“Queensland will bring the largest contingent of tourism businesses of any state and we look forward to the opportunity to reconnect with these important partners.”

“Our comprehensive familiarisation program will also show first-hand why Queensland is a bucket list destination with nearly 500 people from more than 30 countries exploring everything from the reef to the rainforest, the ocean to the Outback and of course our iconic beaches.”

“Rebuilding Queensland’s $6 billion international market is critical to the future of tourism for this country.

“We welcome the 2,300 delegates to the Gold Coast and to Queensland and know they will leave with strong business partnerships and memorable moments shared exploring our state.”

Destination Gold Coast Interim CEO Karen Bolinger said the Gold Coast has transformed in recent years into one of the nation’s most vibrant destinations.

“We want the Gold Coast to be one of the most desirable destinations across the world and ATE gives us an extraordinary opportunity to position ourselves as Asia-Pacific’s most dynamic and innovative holiday and business events destination,” Bolinger said.

“ATE will be our time to really shine and showcase to the world a rejuvenated Gold Coast as delegates experience first-hand every flavour of our city that we enjoy every single day.”

“The Gold Coast boasts golden beaches which is home to the world’s first floating underwater reef, unspoiled waterfalls and hiking trails through World Heritage listed rainforest and cool urban coastal precincts, all within a 45-minute radius.”

ATE23 will run from 30 April to 4 May 2023, with around 2,300 delegates from 30 countries. The delegates include around 650 international buyers and 80 international media who will also have the opportunity to participate in pre and post event familiarisations.

ATE23 is delivered by Tourism Australia in partnership with Tourism and Events Queensland and supported by Destination Gold Coast.

2021 Australian Tourism Exchange

Media Release - 12th February 2021

Link Copied!

The 41 st edition of Australia’s largest tourism tradeshow, the Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE), is set to take place in Sydney in June this year, giving tourism operators around the country a chance meet and do business with travel wholesalers and agents from around Australia and the world.

The annual event, which is delivered by Tourism Australia, will involve a hybrid format that brings together in-person and virtual components to ensure the tourism industry can meet, exchange knowledge, and establish important business connections.

The in-person component of the tradeshow, ATE Live , will take place from 6 to 9 June 2021 at the ICC Sydney, enabling international buyers based in Australia or New Zealand, as well as domestic buyers and frontline travel sellers, to meet with Australian tourism operators.

A virtual version of the event, ATE Online, will follow from 10 to 17 June 2021 for all other international buyers who are unable to travel to Australia.

To provide assistance to the industry after enduring the most challenging year on record, Tourism Australia will be offering fully subsidised participation fees to the event along with three nights’ accommodation for sellers and buyers along with flights for buyers*.

Tourism Australia Managing Director Phillipa Harrison said that participation in ATE is more important than ever to support the industry’s recovery.

“After what has been such a challenging period for tourism, we’re thrilled to be able to bring so many of our friends and colleagues from across the industry together for this year’s ATE event,” Ms Harrison said.

“The tradeshow will provide an opportunity for operators to network and do business with wholesalers and agents from around the world, ensuring valuable links between Australian operators and the global distribution network continue especially while travel to Australia is on hold.”

ATE21 will involve a number of changes, including a revised layout with traditional seller booths being replaced by networking areas defined by each of the States and Territories, and appointments taking place throughout the trade show floor instead of seller booths. Priority will also be given to past attendees and sellers in bushfire affected areas.

ATE typically brings together around 600 travel wholesalers and agents (travel buyers) from more than 30 countries with 1,500 Australian tourism operators (sellers) for four days of face-to-face meetings, networking opportunities and educational famils in the host city. The most recent ATE event was held in Perth in 2019.

Applications for ATE21 will open on 17 February and close on 19 March.

More information on the event will be provided in the coming weeks and will be available at www.tourism.australia.com/ate21

*FOC accommodation and flights to be provided to delegates based outside of Sydney. Seller accommodation is limited to one seller delegate per organisation.

Melbourne To Host Australian Tourism Exchange 2024

Tourism businesses from around the world will descend on Melbourne next year for the country’s biggest annual travel industry event – the Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE).

Held in a different host city each year, ATE is a four-day trade program and Australia’s most important annual travel and tourism marketing event, drawing tourism businesses and buyers from around the world. It will be held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre from 19 to 23 May in 2024.

ATE 2024 will connect Victorian businesses with tourism buyers and media partners from around the world through a combination of scheduled business appointments and networking events held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

It is anticipated at least 50 per cent of buyers attending ATE will travel to regional Victoria as part of their itinerary, adding further economic benefit to local hotels, restaurants, and tourism attractions.

Visit Victoria and Tourism Australia will cooperatively host ATE 2024 which is expected to deliver an immediate injection of around $9 million into the Victorian economy and create invaluable opportunities for tourism operators across the state.

Support from the Andrews Labor Government was critical to securing the hosting rights for ATE 2024 – showcasing the importance of the tourism industry to the state’s economy. The latest figures show Victoria’s visitor economy has reached $31.5 billion as at December 2022 – 97 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.

The business transactions secured at ATE are expected to boost the value of international tourism to the Victorian economy for years to come.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos

“ATE 2024 will be an important opportunity to showcase why Victoria has the most dynamic tourism industry in the country and it will drive business and job opportunities throughout our state.”

“We expect an influx of international buyers, industry experts and media at ATE 2024 which will help keep our hotels, restaurants and attractions busy and support local jobs.”

Quotes attributable to Federal Minister for Trade and Tourism Don Farrell

“Australia’s largest annual tourism event will return to Melbourne next year for the first time since 2015 next year, attracting more than 2,000 delegates from Australia and around the world to Victoria.

“The event, to be held next May, will bring together tourism businesses, tourism wholesalers and retailers from key markets for days of face-to-face, business-to-business appointments.”

Quote attributable to Visit Victoria CEO Brendan McClements

“We’re proud to be partnering with Tourism Australia to host ATE in Melbourne because it will attract international buyers here and showcase some of our best tourism experiences on offer across the state.”

New opportunities for tourism businesses in 2022.

  • Media release

The Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE) will head to Sydney in 2022 as domestic tourism continues its strong recovery, creating the perfect event for operators to find new and exciting business opportunities.

The Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment Dan Tehan today announced that Australia’s premier tourism event will be held at the International Convention Centre, Sydney (ICC Sydney).

ATE, which is Australia’s largest trade event, provides tourism operators around the country a chance to meet and do business with travel wholesalers and agents from around Australia and the world.

Following the success of this year’s ATE, the event will again be held in a hybrid format. The in-person event, at ICC Sydney, will take place from 15 to 18 May next year, and is expected to attract around 1,700 delegates. and contribute millions to the local economy.

Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment Dan Tehan said that as Australia continues its strong recovery from Covid and demand for tourism picks up, ATE will be the ideal opportunity for business.

“As we stick to the National Plan, Australians can be confident about the future as our recovery from Covid continues strongly into 2022. It is going to be a year of great opportunity for Australians, especially our tourism operators,” Mr Tehan said.

“The long-term benefits from ATE are substantial. The relationships and future business it establishes can help grow Australia’s inbound tourism industry, which was worth $45 billion annually pre COVID-19, and will create jobs across the country.”

New South Wales Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney, and Minister for Trade and Industry Stuart Ayres said ATE provides New South Wales with the chance to showcase everything the state has to offer and will use the event to support its bold vision to be the premier visitor economy of the Asia Pacific.

“New South Wales is open for business and we are excited for Sydney to take centre stage and host this very important event for our visitor economy in 2022, especially as we work together to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic,” Mr Ayres said.

“Our Government is committed to working with commercial partners and visitor economy stakeholders at home and overseas to revitalise the industry, enable its recovery and accelerate growth.”

With thrust on sustainability, Australian Tourism Exchange'23 begins in Gold Coast

Picture used for representative purposes

If you are looking for making a memorable trip that's full of activities and out-of-the world leisure experiences laced with sustainable and slow tourism practices, then Australia can be quite promising. The 43rd edition of Tourism Australia’s largest annual trade event, the Australian Tourism Exchange 2023 (ATE23), has officially opened on the  Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre with about 2300 delegates taking part.

This year ATE has returned to its traditional format for the first time since 2019, with four days of appointments.

Tourism Australia Managing Director Phillipa Harrison said the first full ATE in years is an important milestone for the Australian tourism industry as it continues to rebuild off the back of the most challenging few years in its history.

“International travellers are returning to our shores but the competition for the global tourism dollar is now greater than ever before which is why business-to-business events, such as ATE, are so important.”

Also, to underscore sustainable tourism, this year, the ATE is donating 10 dollar per appointment to the Tree to Me programme at Currumbin Wildife Sanctuary to plant trees to maintain the food source now and into the future for Koalas in the Sanctuary and at hospitals.

And what better state than Queensland to hold the gala event? With nearly 500 people from more than 30 countries exploring everything from the reef to

the rainforest, the ocean to the Outback and of course the iconic beaches that include the picturesque Whitehaven beaches, it's surely a bucket list destination for many first time visitors to Australia.

"We want the Gold Coast to be one of the most desirable destinations across the world and ATE gives us an extraordinary opportunity to position ourselves as Asia-Pacific’s most dynamic and innovative holiday and business events destination,” says Destination Gold Coast Interim CEO Karen Bolinger.

Over the past two years, they have invested more than $1 billion in new tourism infrastructure including 3,000 hotel rooms either completed or underway.

“The Gold Coast boasts golden beaches which is home to the world’s first floating underwater reef, unspoiled waterfalls and hiking trails through World Heritage listed rainforest and cool urban coastal precincts, all within a 45-minute radius,” adds Bolinger.

You can start your day having breakfast among gum trees with Koalas before exploring world class exhibits at HOTA Gallery and then set off for some fresh seafood before finishing the day watching sunset over Hinterland from Broadwater on a whale watching cruise.

Also, you can pick and customise a great experience across any of the eight Australian states to suit your style. And the great part is that each one of them is ready to lure you with a whole new range of itineraries thrusting on sustainable, slow and local experiences. Pick from the exotic Northern Territory to the scenic South Australia or have  some very unusual experiences with local and rare animal only to be found in the wilderness of the breathtaking island state of Tasmania.

If ocean is what calls you, you have the great stretch of the barrier reef waiting with all the shark whales, turtles and colourful fish for you to explore be it Cairns or Airlie beach and The Whitsundays.

Younger Aussies (25 to 39) are the most likely to be bitten by the domestic travel bug, with 78% planning to holiday locally in the next 12 months. Sydney narrowly beats Melbourne as the preferred place to visit, followed by The Gold Coast, Regional NSW, then Brisbane.

Top overseas destinations

The even younger 18 to 24 age group are the most likely to travel overseas, with 58% planning to travel abroad in the coming year. The UK tops the list of desired OS destinations, followed by New Zealand, Japan, The USA and Indonesia.

While most Aussies are looking for a beach getaway when it comes to staying close to home, they prefer a trip involving plenty of sightseeing, followed by some rest and relaxation, once they leave the country.

Top travel websites

Data from Nielsen Digital Content Ratings (DCR) saw Qantas claim top spot when it comes to travel websites, followed by Trip Advisor with 5.82 million and 5.02 million users respectively in Q1 of this year. Booking Holdings Network was the third-largest platform in terms of users with 2.5 million.

Average user engagement time on most travel platforms was also consistent from Q4 2023 to Q1 2024, although Royal Caribbean Cruises and  Anytrip.com.au  led the pack. On average, Royal Caribbean users spent roughly 29 minutes interacting with the platform, while Anytrip users spent almost 27 minutes on the platform.

Top frequent flyer programs

The number of Australians who are members of a frequent flyer program also increased, with 57% of all Australian consumers now part of some sort of travel rewards scheme. Qantas remains the market leader with a 45% share of the market, followed by Virgin (31%), and other smaller players making up the remaining 24%.

Top travel advertisers

In addition, Nielsen Ad Intel data also shows that the travel and tourism industry spent more than $153 million on advertising in Australia in Q1, 2024 – an increase of 8% from the previous quarter, with TripADeal the biggest spender, followed by Virgin Australia, then the Flight Centre-owned Ignite Travel.

Nielsen Ad Intel’s Australia Commercial Lead, Rose Lopreiato, said: “Australians’ love of travel continues to defy cost of living pressures, as shown by an 8% jump in travel ad spend this quarter. You can’t get a stronger indicator than that when it comes to how marketers and advertisers are spending in order to maximise ROI, forge lasting connections with brands and consumers, and do so in the most economical way possible. From competitive ad spend analysis, to knowing what your competitors are saying in market and the deals and offers you’re up against, Ad Intel helps you understand which ads are driving your competitors spend and where”.

Glenn Channel, Nielsen’s Pacific Head of Advanced Analytics added: “More than ever, brands need data that gives them the edge on their competition. That means going above standard demographic information, and understanding consumers, in this case travellers, as unique groups, who are motivated by more than just the urge to get away. Nielsen CMV enables brands to see consumers through an advanced audience lens, delivering a more holistic picture of behaviours and preferences with surprising linkages and purchase triggers that other consumer insight providers can’t match.”
