Take Their Word For It

A man holding a salmon on a boat in Prince William Sound, Whittier Alaska

Can’t recommend Gabriel and his awesome boat enough. We spent an incredible half day (6 hours) exploring all of Prince William Sound seeing wildlife, catching incredible salmon (that he filleted sashimi for us on the boat and then set up to have shipped back to us), explored glaciers, saw bears catching salmon as they jumped up a fresh water stream. Was an incredible day. Tip: If you book a full day (10 hours) you can request that he bring a hibachi and side dishes and he’ll make salmon for lunch or dinner right on the boat! On full days he’ll also stop by his buddies oyster farm to pick up some to grill. He also does custom water skiing, kayaking and surfing trips to the outer islands ( best in September!) Can’t wait to come back!

We LOVED our customized family tour with Gabe at Tidewater Taxi out of Whittier! First of all, he's very knowledgeable about Alaska and Prince William Sound; he told us all about the geography and ecosystems as well as the aquatic life, even showing us moraines and fjords and other items of interest on the boat info system. He's witty and fun, as well as experienced. We felt safe the entire time. His boat is clean, comfortable and fast. But best of all, we got to walk along a beach right by a glacier! Got close to sea otters and whales. Stopped to photograph amazing ice floats. Enjoyed fishing and shrimping. Gabe cleaned the fish for us, and even gave us cooking recommendations, as well as other ideas for sightseeing in Alaska. Although I've taken trips on larger boat tours (and enjoyed them), there's nothing like a personalized tour on a small boat. You can get closer to animals and glaciers, and can take stops to hike along beaches - basically, you and the captain design your own day based on the weather and safety boundaries of the day. Basically, Gabe asked what we wanted to do, and made it happen. He's a great conversationalist and all around interesting guy, and we had an incredible adventure. I'd hire him again in a heartbeat and definitely recommend him to others who are looking for a fantastic tour.

It sounds cliche, but this was really the highlight of our 10 day trip to Alaska! Gabe is so friendly and knowledgeable and he was willing to customize our 8-hour tour along the way. He mentioned a remote island where oysters are harvested and we asked to go there. No prob! He not only took us there but he shucked oysters for us as we floated in the calm waters of Prince William Sound. We saw otters, seals, bald eagles, porpoises, and puffins but the most incredible part of the day was when Gabe brought us to Surprise Glacier where we watched in amazement as the glacier calved several times. I was a bit nervous as the first few minutes out of the harbor seemed rough (it wasn't), but the rest of the ride was smooth and the 8 hours flew by in Gabe's comfortable boat! Do not hesitate to book this adventure!!

Let me begin by saying that we saw humpback whales bubble net feeding! We spent almost two hours observing them do it over and over. This can never be expected anytime or anywhere. This would have been a five-star tour anyway. Gabe’s boat is nice and clean and has a strong indoor compartment and a bathroom. It was great for touring the Prince William Sound. Also, Gabe is bright and personable. Besides the humpback whales, we saw porpoises, kittiwake rookeries, sea lions, seals, sea otters and puffins on a gorgeous day in the sound. This tour was one of the best experiences my young children and I enjoyed in Alaska.

alaska taxi and tours

We had the pleasure of going out w/ Captain Gabe into the PWS a few weeks ago. It remains the highlight of our trip. Gabe was incredibly knowledgable about the area being an Alaskan resident and the changes he has seen over the years. He was patient w/ our kids and taught them how to catch rockfish all the while looking out for wildlife. The 8-hour trip zoomed by but it left us w/ lasting memories, so much so that the 8 year old wrote about this day 3-weeks later as his favorite Alaskan memory. If I had known about Gabe's company prior to our trip, I would have gone directly to him. At least we were fortunate enough to meet him through another outfitter and if we ever have the chance to get back to Alaska, we will contacting him directly! An amazing time. Many thanks for amazing memories.

Fishing towns and staggering views on the Kenai Peninsula

alaska taxi and tours

Accessible wilderness, heaps of trails and enough trophy fish to spawn “it was THIS big” stories for years to come: It’s easy to see why the Kenai Peninsula is sometimes referred to as “Alaska’s playground.” While there are oodles of worthwhile spots to visit, here are just a few to get you started.

Impossibly charming, Hope is a worthwhile detour for those zipping down to conquer the Kenai Peninsula. The atmospheric downtown with stunning views of Turnagain Arm offers a good jumping-off point for a variety of hikes. Gull Rock Trail, an old wagon road, is a local favorite — it’s 5 miles one way with negligible elevation gain. Hope Point is a strenuous climb following an alpine ridge that offers incredible views (and serious bragging rights). Those looking for an adrenaline rush can book a rafting trip down Sixmile Creek. For those seeking a more relaxing trip, there are heaps of cabins with cozy porches ideal for cracking into a book, the Dirty Skillet makes for a solid dinner spot, and the Creekbend Co. attracts some of the better Alaska bands for nighttime entertainment.

Just over 120 miles away, Seward could make a nice day trip from Anchorage. But why rush? It has all the Alaska elements: water, mountains, forests, fishing and quirky local charm. Want to see a glacier up close? Access some by water in Kenai Fjords National Park or by land at Exit Glacier. Want to see sweeping views of Resurrection Bay? Meet Mount Marathon and marvel at how local and international athletes get to the top, and back again, in one of Alaska’s most iconic footraces each year (traditionally held on the Fourth of July). Looking for something the whole family will enjoy? Don’t miss the touch pool at the Alaska SeaLife Center, and look for vessels with pun-inspired names in the harbor. Complement your adventures with a meal at one of the local eateries, many of which are housed in historic buildings.

Soldotna and Kenai

Drive through these towns in the height of summer and you’ll notice many cars laden with big, round dipnets, rods and reels with all the bells and whistles, coolers and muddy Xtratuf boots. The salmon that return en masse to the Kenai River are legendary. (Be advised: The area’s dipnet fishery is deservedly famous but open to Alaska residents only. See our fishing guide for an overview of other great options, and always make sure you have the correct permits; the Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s We Fish AK site is a good place to start, or call 907-267-2218.)

If fishing doesn’t call to you, there are breweries with airy patios, the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters & Visitors Center offers naturalist-led outdoor programs, and Soldotna’s Homestead Museum showcases homesteaders’ cabins with free guided tours.

alaska taxi and tours

A boat moves through the marina on the Homer Spit. (Loren Holmes / ADN)

Visitors to Homer find there are many ways to explore “the end of the road.” Just 220 miles from Anchorage, the town sits between the water and the mountains and extends out onto a skinny, 4.5-mile-long spit. It’s a town where fishermen, artists, beer lovers, foodies, musicians, adventurers and beachcombers all feel at home.

It’s easy to while away a few days — tramp along the beautiful trail systems, check out the tide pools, eat at first-rate restaurants, pick through the various art galleries and handicraft stores. You can learn a bit more about the 49th state’s local ecosystem at the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies or the Exxon oil spill at the Pratt Museum.

If time and budget allow, tick off some bucket-list experiences: Get a bird’s-eye view of nearby glaciers and wildlife on a flightseeing tour; cruise around on a water taxi looking for sea creatures; try your hand at reeling in a “barn door”-sized halibut on a charter; or take a water taxi across the bay to Halibut Cove, an artist enclave known for divine dishes at The Saltry Restaurant and stunning scenery.

Can You Drive to Juneau Alaska? Travel to Juneau (2024)

H ave you found yourself scratching your head and wondering if you can drive to Juneau, Alaska? If so, you’re not alone. This question has puzzled many travelers planning their Alaskan adventure.

Can you drive to Juneau Alaska? The short answer is no, you can’t drive directly to Juneau from anywhere.

As someone who lived in the huge state of Alaska for seven years, I’ve gathered a wealth of knowledge about its unique geography and transportation quirks.

In this post, we’ll unravel the mystery surrounding the accessibility of Juneau, a city known for its stunning landscapes and rich history.

We’ll tackle the complexities of Alaskan geography and transportation, providing clear, reliable information to dispel any doubts you might have.

Whether you’re planning a trip to the Last Frontier or just satisfying your curiosity, this post is designed to guide you through the confusion.

Can You Drive to Juneau, Alaska?

Despite being the capital city of Alaska, Juneau is unique in that it’s not connected to the rest of the state by a road system.

Nestled at the base of towering mountains and surrounded by the waters of the Gastineau Channel, Juneau is what’s known as a ‘roadless city.’

It is a city that’s as unique as it is beautiful. Nestled in the heart of the Inside Passage of the Alaska Marine Highway, it’s a place where mountains and glaciers serve as the backdrop to everyday life.

But there’s that weird catch – if there isn’t a road that leads directly to Juneau, how do you get there?

Well, it’s all part of the Alaskan adventure! You could drive to Bellingham in Washington State and hop on a ferry for a scenic journey.

Or, if you’re up for an epic road trip, you could traverse part of the iconic Alaskan-Canadian Highway and then catch a ferry from Skagway to Juneau.

Either way, the journey to Juneau is just as memorable as the destination itself!

Is Juneau Only Accessible by Boat?

While boat travel is a popular way to reach Juneau, it’s not the only option. Juneau is primarily accessible by two means: by sea and by air.

BY SEA : The Alaska Marine Highway System operates ferries that connect Juneau with other communities in Southeast Alaska, as well as with Bellingham, Washington. This is a scenic and popular way to reach Juneau, allowing you to bring your vehicle with you.

BY AIR : Juneau International Airport serves as a major hub for air travel in Southeast Alaska. It offers regular flights to and from several Alaskan cities and towns, as well as seasonal flights to Seattle, Washington.

So, while you can’t drive directly to Juneau, you have options when it comes to choosing your mode of transportation. Whether you prefer the leisurely pace of a ferry ride or the speed and convenience of air travel, getting to Juneau is part of the fun!

How Do I Get My Car to Juneau?

If you want to bring your car to Juneau, the most feasible option is to use the Alaska Marine Highway System, which operates a network of ferries that transport people, vehicles, and cargo to various locations in Alaska such as Whittier, Valdez , Homer, Ketchikan, and Haines, to name a few.

Here’s how you can do it:

  • Drive to a Ferry Terminal : The southernmost terminal of the Alaska Marine Highway System is in Bellingham, Washington. You can drive your car to this terminal.
  • Take the Ferry : Once you reach the terminal, you can load your car onto the ferry. The ferry will then transport you and your car along the scenic Inside Passage to Juneau. The journey takes about 2-3 days, depending on the specific route and schedule.

Remember to book your ferry passage in advance, especially during the busy summer months. Also, note that the cost of ferry travel will depend on the size of your vehicle and the number of passengers.

So, while you can’t drive directly to Juneau, you can certainly bring your car with you and enjoy the freedom of having your vehicle once you’re there!

What to Pack for Your Juneau Adventure

Heading on an adventure to Juneau, Alaska, is an exciting prospect! To ensure you’re well-prepared for your trip, it’s important to pack appropriately. Here’s a practical guide to help you decide what to bring, depending on the season and your planned activities.

Clothing : Regardless of the season, layering is key in Juneau. The weather can change quickly, so it’s best to be prepared.

  • A mix of short and long-sleeved tops
  • Warm sweater or fleece, and a waterproof jacket
  • Knit hat and light gloves
  • Comfortable walking shoes for exploring the city
  • Gore-Tex hiking boots if you plan to hit the trails.

Outdoor Gear : If you’re planning outdoor activities, consider packing the following items to make your day more comfortable and efficient.

  • Binoculars for wildlife viewing
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Backpack for day trips

Summer Accessories : If the sun is shining, which admittedly, doesn’t always happen, you will want some protection!

  • Cap or baseball hat
  • Bug spray can also be useful

Winter : Winter in Alaska can be brutally cold. Juneau can be damp as well as it is rainier in this area.

  • Warm waterproof mittens
  • Fleece-lined hat
  • Thermal Layers
  • Waterproof winter boots

Essentials : Everyone has those personal needs that one doesn’t want to forget to pack! Make a list and check it twice.

  • Travel documents
  • Medications
  • Any specialty items you might not be able to find easily in Juneau

Remember, packing for Juneau is all about preparing for adventure and being ready to embrace the elements, whatever the weather may bring.

Togiak National Wildlife Refuge

Birds are sensitive during the nesting season. Vegetation clearing, ground disturbance, heavy wake near shorelines and other site construction and recreational activities can destroy eggs or nestlings or cause nest abandonment. If you encounter an active nest, leave it be and give it space until young hatch and depart the area. Do not destroy eggs, chicks, or adults of wild bird species. Learn about the laws that govern migratory birds in Alaska  including possible exceptions for subsistence gathering . More information on avoiding waterbird harassment  and timing recommendations for construction activities to minimize impacts to nesting birds .

Togiak National Wildlife Refuge is situated in southwest Alaska between Kuskokwim Bay and Bristol Bay. It is bordered on the north by Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge, and on the east by Wood-Tikchik State Park. Togiak Refuge is roadless; primary access is via air or water. The Togiak Refuge is open to visitors year round, but some areas are restricted seasonally or require special permits. The eastern boundary of the refuge is about 350 air miles southwest of Anchorage. Primary access to Togiak Refuge itself is by chartered aircraft. Dillingham is the hub for many of the air taxis that have permits to operate within the Refuge, although some air taxis fly from Bethel and King Salmon. Typically, air taxis will drop off passengers and gear and return at a designated time and place for pick up. Our main office is located in Dillingham, Alaska.

Guided public use is managed through a complex permitting program that includes air and water taxi services, sport fishing, big game hunting, and wildlife viewing. Unguided access is managed through public contacts and a force of Refuge Rangers who patrol more than 200 miles of rivers. In total, Togiak receives more than 20,000 visitor days per year.

We recommend you leave a detailed trip plan with a trusted friend or family member, as well as any air taxi or guide you are working with, in order to facilitate search and rescue efforts, if necessary.

Some permits for limited resources, such as guided float trips on rivers, are issued on a limited entry basis. Others, such as air taxi permits, are not limited at this time. Businesses and guides are responsible for obtaining and renewing permits. Visitors who hire commercial operators during their visits to Togiak Refuge should be sure that the operators have current permits for the activities they are conducting.

Pilots are asked to contact Togiak refuge prior to visiting to learn about regulations and other relevant topics. The operation of aircraft at altitudes and in flight paths resulting in the herding, harassment, hazing, or driving of wildlife is prohibited under provisions of the Federal Airborne Hunting Act, Marine Mammals Protection Act, and other Federal laws. While flying over Togiak Refuge, the Federal Aviation Administration recommends that all aircraft, except for take off and landing, maintain a minimum altitude of 2,000 feet above ground level.
