Enjoy a 2-hour cruise along this interesting waterway which runs from the recently restored canal basin to the naturally beautiful Chichester Harbour - a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. During the cruise we enjoy an inclusive fish and chip lunch. The remainder of the day is spent in the historic city centre dominated by the majestic 12th century cathedral.

Canal trip with fish n chips

This is the second trip we've taken on the chichester canal and again it didnt disappoint . The organisation is slick but friendly the staff are efficient but also lovely. The fish and chips were nice and the views you get with your meal are beautiful. Cant wait to do the afternoon tea trip in june. Highly recommended.

The boats are lovely and the guides seem to love what they do. They are very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the canal and wildlife that abounds around it. Our crew, Ian and Alex, were very friendly and could point out various nests and knew where the baby ducklings were likely to be.

Today I brought my parents (aged 89 and 90) for the midday canal trip. Mum has dementia and limited mobility but we were very well looked after by Dorothy and Malcolm. We were able to use the passenger lift for getting on and off the boat, and there is also a lift in the cafe. We had a wonderful trip and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. Such a joy to glide peacefully through the countryside spotting the ducklings, baby coots, swans and a heron along the way. Perfect! Afterwards we enjoyed a light lunch in the cafe. We have also taken our 2 year old grandson on the trip last Autumn and he loved it too! Very grateful to all concerned for making this lovely experience so accessible for all ages. Would highly recommend.

We have been on two canal trips this year, one a few weeks ago when we took my 92 year old mum for a mother’s day trip with afternoon tea and again today for an Easter Bunny trip with our three grandchildren aged 5,4 and 1. I cannot fault either trip. The Mother’s Day tea was lovely, food was all fresh and served by two lovely volunteers who couldn’t do enough for us. My mother had to use the boat lift to board and the crew were so kind and helpful. Today, my grandchildren had a lovely ride up the canal to meet the Easter. Bunny. Fabulous trip and once again the volunteers went the extra mile to make sure everyone had an amazing time. Would thoroughly recommend

Steps away from the city centre, Chichester Canal offers a unique and peaceful environment. Linking the City to the sea, our speciality is boat trips.

The Canal has up to four daily trips on our boat Kingfisher. Richmond offers catered cruises, for example a Fish and Chip cruise and an English Afternoon Tea cruise.

RSPB Nature Reserves

A wonderful mix of wetland, woodland and heathland. Spot birds and butterflies along our trails, enjoy views across the landscape, or a hands -on nature experience.

RSPB Dungeness

Jutting out into the English Channel, Dungeness is the UK’s only desert landscape and home to many special animals including lizards, rare bumblebees and the endemic Sussex emerald moth. It is a magnet for all kinds of birdlife, from huge flocks of waterbirds to beautiful birds of prey, notably hobbies in the summer and marsh harriers all year round. Dungeness is also one of the few places in the South East with bearded tits – delicately marked birds found only in reedbeds.

RSPB Pagham Harbour

One of Sussex’s few undeveloped stretches of coastline, Pagham Harbour combines beautiful landscapes with a rich historical heritage – and a wealth of wildlife. As the sheltered inlet at the heart of the reserve fills and empties with the tide, watch ducks, geese and wading birds fly to and fro. Resident little egrets and lapwings are joined by passing migrants in spring, while summer sees breeding little terns, butterflies flitting along the hedgerows, dragonflies hovering over ponds and lizards basking in the sun.

RSPB Pulborough Brooks Nature Reserve

In the glorious South Downs National Park, Pulborough Brooks has amazing views of the Arun Valley. It provides an all-year-round home for nature, with highlights including the nightingale, famed for the beauty of its song, whistling wigeons in flooded winter meadows, and pretty butterflies and dragonflies amongst the wild flowers in the sunnier months. Rowing can either be a relaxing way to spend a sunny afternoon or it can be an option for vigorous exercise in a beautiful setting. The choice is yours!

Canoeing or paddleboarding-a great way to enjoy the Canal

Walkers, runners and cyclists can all enjoy the 4 mile canal towpath. You may see kingfishers, egrets, foxes or deer, a variety of dragonflies and fish, and some rare plants.

For pleasure and competition anglers. The canal holds good stocks of roach, rudd, perch, common, crucian and mirror carp, bream, tench, pike and eels plus some dace and chubb.

Chichester Model Boat Group

A beautiful accessible retreat close to the city sometimes described as the “green lung” of Chichester, certainly one of its key attractions!

Chichester Ship Canal passes through 4 miles of open farmland from the Basin to Chichester Harbour at Birdham. It is a very attractive stretch of water for rowing , canoeing , angling and walking .

At the Basin, there is our  Chichester Canal Cafe  which offers a wide range of amenities to local residents and visitors: refreshments, souvenirs, educational and tourist information and boat trips. This is one of the most beautiful locations in the city centre to relax and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee. The cafe also offers hot and cold light refreshments, ice creams and confectionery. There is ample indoor and outdoor seating, both with good views of the activities in the Basin.

Adjacent to the cafe there is a Heritage Centre located in a 19th century old stable which has been refurbished to provide information about the canal and its history.

The boat trips depart from the Basin. As well as scheduled daily trips , the boats are available for charter for social occasions including lunch, dinner and evening cruises.

Throughout the year there are interesting events , such as the Dragon Boat Races held in June.

Free car parking is available for visitors.

Please note that swimming is not allowed in the Canal at any time

The Chichester Ship Canal Trust does not make any provision or provide any facilities for swimming in the canal. It does not, for example, provide any of the following… • Water quality sampling. • Monitoring blue/green algae. • Facilities for swimmer access or egress to the water. • Set aside areas specifically for swimming. • Signage or any other means of warning to other river and canal users of the possibility of swimmers. • Provide any risk assessments or safety management for open water swimming.

For these reasons, the Trust does not permit swimming under any circumstances.

Canoeing and stand up paddle boarding is allowed, but those taking part do so at their own risk.
