The best river cruises blend refined onboard accommodations with exciting itineraries along some of the world’s most memorable waterways.

After pandemic-related challenges at the beginning of last year, river ships got back to what they do best: exploring inland waterways in Europe, the United States, and select other destinations around the world. Travel + Leisure readers enthusiastically returned, setting out on voyages both classic and new.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated individual cruise ships on their cabins and facilities, food, service, itineraries and destinations, excursions and activities, and value. Those assessments were combined to generate results for the cruise lines in six categories, including river cruising.

The top three in the river cruise lines were very close in their scores. Viking, the world's largest river cruise company, moved up two spots into the lead position. Tauck, the well-known tour and river-ship operator, retained its No. 2 spot. "The itinerary was thoughtful as well as instructive," wrote one reader who traveled on the Joy . In the No. 3 spot is Uniworld Boutique River Cruises, with praise that included this rave from one voter who sailed on the Maria Theresa : "This was an exceptional cruise. The staff was excellent. I can't say enough about this cruise line and this ship."

Aqua Expeditions, with journeys on the Peruvian Amazon, ranked No. 4, thanks in part to the sophisticated onboard dining. "Its cuisine is rich in local products and designed by one of the most renowned chefs in Peru," noted one reader. Closer to home, No. 5 American Queen Voyages (formerly American Queen Steamboat Company) earned praise — especially from older adults — for its leisurely cruises on the Columbia, the Mississippi, the Ohio, and other U.S. waterways.

Top-ranked Viking does all the major riverways of Europe, with ships also on the Nile and the Mekong, and, new in 2022, on the Mississippi. Readers praised the line's value proposition and shore experiences that go beyond the norm. The "Thinking Man's vacation" is the way one reader who sailed on a Viking ship on the Rhine river put it.

Find the full list of the best river cruise lines — and more on what sets Viking apart — below.

With its fleet of more than 50 contemporary "longships" on rivers such as the Rhine, the Danube, and the Seine, plus additional ships in Europe, Egypt, and Vietnam, T+L's top-ranked river cruise line for 2022 is often praised for its steadiness. "Having traveled on seven Viking longships that are virtually indistinguishable from one another, I believe it's the consistency that makes Viking one of our favorite ways to travel," said one reader. The longships are light-filled floating boutique hotels with a Scandinavian-design aesthetic, indoor and outdoor dining, and herb gardens up on top. Viking's carefully crafted itineraries and "good value" also received praise from readers. "Met wonderful new friends. Absolutely outstanding service and terrific food," said one fan.

9 best river cruises in Europe

Fran Golden

River cruising in Europe is one of those delightfully slow and easy modes of travel. You're in a small floating hotel, exploring calm inland waters, gliding past castles and vineyards and scenery that changes by the hour.

Daily escorted walking tours and other excursions provided by the river line take you to key UNESCO World Heritage Sites and other city and village attractions you've come to see. Or you can choose to explore on your own, which is easy since your ship often will dock right in town.

Lazy afternoons on the ship afford the time to sit in a lounge chair and watch the world go by — kids swimming from the riverbanks, farmers tending their crops, river birds flapping their wings — as you glide to your next destination.

Which European river should you explore? The choices are broader than you might expect.

The main rivers in Europe are the Danube and the Rhine and their tributaries. They are, by far, the most popular, doable either on one-week segments or longer itineraries that combine areas and sometimes combine rivers. Even if your cruise is only a week, don't underestimate the allure of relaxing for seven days on a river in France or on the dreamy Douro in Portugal.

Here are the best river cruises in Europe.

Upper Danube

european river cruise operators

When it comes to Europe river cruises, a perfect seven-night starter sailing is the Upper Danube, which takes you through centuries of history as you explore Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary.

Ships visit such cultural hubs as Vienna, with its opera and art museums and elaborate royal palaces, and Budapest, Hungary, with its magnificent architecture and modern vibe. If your ship passes the Hungarian Parliament building at night, you're in for a treat; magnificently lit, it's one of the most photographed sights on the river.

Along the route, between Melk and Krems in Austria, you cruise through the Wachau Valley, a key wine-growing region producing rieslings and gruner veltliners, with sipping opportunities available. It's also a great place to bike, which is why it's nice to sail with lines, such as AmaWaterways , that carry bikes on board for passengers to use.

You might also have the option of a side trip to Salzburg, Austria, the birthplace of Mozart — and also where several scenes for the movie "Sound of Music" were filmed. A surprise for many is Old Town Bratislava, Slovakia, which might not have been on your must-do list but which charms with its beer culture and castles.

Lower Danube

european river cruise operators

For a deep dive into Eastern Europe's past and present, the fascinating Lower Danube route between Budapest and Bucharest, Romania, explores history from the medieval times and Victorian era of Dracula to the rise of communism and the Bosnian War.

The seven-night river cruise takes you through Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania. The most beautiful stretch of the river is a 62-mile passage through a gorge between the Balkan and Carpathian Mountains. It's also one of the deepest stretches of river in the world.

Other sights accessed on shore excursions via bus include Bulgaria's Belogradchik Rocks, which are naturally carved towering red rock pinnacles that appear to take forms such as "Madonna with child," and Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria's stunning medieval capital.

When it comes to top cruising rivers in Europe, the Rhine wins for natural beauty and fairytale landscapes. A cruise on the river between Amsterdam in The Netherlands, and Basel, Switzerland — a typical one-week route — takes you past expanses of slope-side vineyards, forests and mountains, historic cities and medieval half-timbered villages.

That's even before you get to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This 40-mile stretch of river, between Rudesheim and Koblenz, Germany, has castles galore — you might imagine Rapunzel letting down her hair — and Lorelei Rock, the legendary cliff said to distract sailors with the mesmerizing song of a maiden.

The French city of Strasbourg, with its famous Gothic cathedral and robust Alsatian culinary scene, is often a favorite stop on Rhine itineraries, with other highlights including Heidelberg, Germany, and its imposing castle.

Sure, you can catch sight of the Eiffel Tower when boarding a river ship in Paris, but you can do that while staying in a hotel, too. The real attractions of a Seine River cruise are sailing on the river outside the city toward the English Channel and a visit to the beaches in Normandy for a perspective on World War II.

Your visit there and to the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, as well as other memorials and monuments to the fallen, is a poignant experience (one that requires a two-hour bus ride from your ship, however). Avalon Waterways brings a World War II expert on board to add insight on select sailings.

Other treasures exist along the Seine, not the least of which is Giverny, the home and gardens of impressionist artist Claude Monet. If you are a fan of his art, much of the property might seem familiar.

In historic Rouen, where Joan of Arc was martyred in the Middle Ages, stop by the Rouen Cathedral (another subject of Monet) before losing yourself on cobblestone streets with wonderful cafes.

Bordeaux river cruises are different from other water routes because you explore two short waterways — the Dordogne and Garonne Rivers — and the Gironde Estuary in Southwest France.

You'll spend more time ashore than floating down the river on this itinerary, with your ship docked for two nights in the city of Bordeaux, a mini-Paris with grand 18th-century buildings. Who cares when you are in the epicenter of French culture, in one of the most celebrated wine regions in the world?

Bordeaux serves up the opportunity to sip Medoc, Margaux, Saint-Emilion, Pomerol and Sauternes wines as you expand your wine education. You'll visit vineyards and gorgeous chateaus. Your cruise line might even host a dinner at a wine estate one evening. If you plan your cruise for September or October, you'll be able to admire the grape harvest.

Rhone and Saone

european river cruise operators

Another must for wine-lovers is exploring the interior of France, sipping Cotes du Rhone in such famous winemaking regions as Hermitage and Chateauneuf-du-Pape in Provence and Beaune in Burgundy.

Rhone and Saone River cruises typically sail between Lyon and Arles or Avignon, and they're top-loaded with such non-wine attractions as the Roman aqueduct Pont du Gard and the Roman Arles Amphitheater, as well as the massive Palais des Papes (Papal Palace) in Avignon. You'll also be able to take in the lavender fields, haystacks and other scenes that inspired painters like Paul Cezanne and Vincent Van Gogh.

For a lazy, dreamy, wonderful river cruise experience, nothing quite beats exploring the wine regions of Portugal on the Douro, one of the major rivers through the Iberian Peninsula. The home base for these river cruises is Porto, Portugal, with its historic city center, spectacular bridges and port houses.

On one-week cruises, you'll follow the river 130 miles past green hillside vineyards in the Douro River Valley, a UNESCO-recognized destination, before turning around at the Spanish border. The river cruises typically include a visit to the university town of Salamanca in northern Spain. Viticulture is very much the lesson en route, as you learn about port production on the "River of Gold."

Due to fluctuating water levels and narrow passages, the Elbe is a challenging river that runs 680 miles between the Czech Republic and Germany. Historically, it formed part of the border between East Germany and West Germany.

River cruising here is a rare experience. Viking River Cruises is one of the few lines that visits (another is the French line CroisiEurope), offering 10-day itineraries that combine hotel stays in the cities of Berlin and Prague with a stretch of river between Prague and Wittenburg, Germany.

The cruises are on ships built specifically for the Elbe route. They stop in places such as resurgent Dresden, heavily bombed during World War II but expertly rebuilt; the Saxon Switzerland region of Germany with its striking sandstone rock formations; and the spa town of Bad Schandau.

The Po River in northern Italy is tidal, making it another challenging waterway. However, it affords the opportunity to combine a visit to Venice with a river cruise. Uniworld Boutique River Cruises does the Po in high style with its 126-passenger S.S. La Venizia, completely decked out with a sense of place, from Fortuny fabrics and Murano glass to its gilded accents.

The one-week route doesn't take you far but does include the walled city of Padua, the charming fishing village of Chioggia, and the culinary mecca of Bologna.

For those looking for a longer experience, Uniworld cleverly combines a Po cruise with luxury rail journeys to places like Istanbul, Switzerland and beyond.

European river cruising has experienced an extraordinary surge in popularity over the last few years, with an ever more varied range of ships, holiday styles and cruise lines to choose from. Here is your ultimate European river cruise guide.

The amount of choice on offer can be overwhelming, especially if you're new to the world of river cruising. With this in mind, we've put together this guide to the many rivers and waterways of Europe, giving you an overview of what each river has to offer and which cruise lines we recommend, plus itinerary ideas for 2024 and 2025...

European river cruise guide for 2024 & 2025

Often thought of as the river cruise to take, the Rhine is a fairytale experience: craggy outcrops topped with enchanted castles, lush forests and terraced vineyards, pretty villages, atmospheric cobbled streets, ancient towns and more treasures at every turn. The history of the region is significant, and it has inspired composers, writers and poets alike. More or less every European river cruise operator offers a Rhine itinerary - and with good reason, as there is so much to do.

Rhine Valley at Rudesheim, Germany

Check out all the options to find the itinerary that is best for you. Some take you all the way to Basel with the opportunity to extend your stay in the scenic Swiss Alps. Others start in quirky Amsterdam, the perfect city to explore on foot or by water. The picturesque Moselle river might be included - don't miss the opportunity to sample the wines, the quality will amaze you. Other key tributaries are the Neckar and the Main. Early in the year you might be looking out for the 'tulip time' cruises, and the opportunity to visit the lowlands of the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, with great art, history and amazing food, such as AmaWaterways' Tulip Time sailings in Spring 2024 and 2025 .

Our top choice for your first river cruise, the middle stretch of the Danube (between Passau and Budapest) offers everything: extraordinary capital cities including Vienna, Budapest and Bratislava, pretty villages, great music, art and architecture, and delicious food and drink. Remote abbeys, terraced vineyards and beautiful countryside contrast with signature ports of call packed with 'must see' treasures. Relive the magic - and the dark undertones - of The Sound of Music . Roam the lands of the Habsburgs, and feel the long arm of history stretch through the former Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Alte Hofburg in Vienna, Austria

The upper stretch of the Danube brings history alive in a spectacular way, as you cruise from Nuremberg with its World War II overtones. Less known is the eastern stretch through Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania all the way to the Black Sea, sailing through the Iron Gates and visiting the proud cities of Belgrade and Bucharest; for returning visitors, this is an itinerary to look out for, like Scenic's Danube Delta Discovery or Black Sea Explorer .

Budapest Parliament at sunrise

Vienna and Budapest are highlights - go for itineraries with overnight stays in these cities if you can.

Did you know?

The Rhine/Main Canal links the Rhine and Danube rivers, allowing you to cruise all the way from the North Sea at Amsterdam to the Black Sea at Constanta - an amazing 28-day journey.

Viking River Cruises review: Lower Danube delights

The Rhône (and its tributary the Saône) has to be one of the most appealing river cruises you can choose, with so much to offer. Start in the gastronomic capital of France, Lyon, a great destination in itself. The city is easily reached by air or rail, and it's worth considering extending your trip for a real culinary treat.

Lyon, France

Then sail northwards for the world renowned vineyards of the Beaune region, sampling the produce along the way, and southwards into Provence for a wealth of history including extraordinary Roman architecture at Arles, and the seat of the former Popes in medieval Avignon with its maze of cobbled streets - not to mention its famous bridge! See the landscapes that inspired impressionists Van Gogh and Cézanne, with huge fragrant fields of lavender, medieval villages and vineyards, abbeys and monasteries. Along the way enjoy the great food of the region - ideally paired with local wines! We like Uniworld's Grand France itinerary operating from March to November in 2024 & 2025.

Saint Paul de Vence

The Roman ruins in Vienne

  • AmaCello river cruise review: Relaxing on the Rhône

Ah the Seine , flowing through romantic Paris, the 'City of Light'. Here you join your cruise, arriving by rail or a speedy flight. There is time to explore the French capital and its many treasures, before sailing into the Norman countryside, known for its rich cuisine based on the produce of the region: apples, cider, cream and cheese.

Eiffel Tower, Paris

You can visit Monet's famous garden and the beautiful gothic city of Rouen with its fantastic cathedral as you sail towards the sea, and the prettiest seaside town ever, lovely Honfleur. Take an overland trip to the beaches of World War II, where the Normandy landings took place, and see the magnificent museum in Caen. Special visits to picturesque chateaux and abbeys along the way remind you of Normandy's rich history - and don't forget to sample the excellent local cider. Scenic's 10-day June 2024 sailing is the perfect introduction.

Honfleur, France

Sainte Catherine Church in Honfleur, with two parallel vaults in the shape of an upturned hull.

Our clients say:

"…right on our doorstep and yet we have never explored it before. The speedy Eurostar journey to Paris was a bonus and we loved the final evening right in the city. But our highlight was the beautiful scenic cruising."

The Garonne

Bordeaux has to be one of the most beautiful cities in France, and it's the perfect starting point for your cruise into the heart of wine country on the Garonne, Gironde and Dordogne rivers.

Place de la Bourse, Bordeaux

Aquitaine in south west France is known for its superb Appellation d'Origine Controllée Grand Cru wines, and here are names to conjure with: St Emilion, Pomerol, Médoc and more. Chateau visits and tastings will be a key feature of your stay, but that is not all the region has to offer: amazing scenery, pretty medieval towns and villages, fortified bastides and castle mansions are all at your fingertips. Viking's 7-night Bordeaux round-trip sailing at the end of April 2024 is a fabulous way to experience this world-famous region and avoid the summer crowds.

Bordeaux, Framce

A walking tour in Bordeaux itself is a must - broad streets, magnificent buildings, pretty parks and many beautiful churches - then sit at a pavement café with a good glass of Bordeaux to enjoy the atmosphere.

River Cruising Uncovered

Thinking about a river cruise but don't know where to start? Our informative guide is packed full of everything you need to know, including which cruise lines we recommend, what to expect on each river and how to make the most of your trip...

Portugal's Douro Valley , where grapes have been grown for 2,000 years, is the perfect base to visit picturesque quintas, explore natural treasures in the Douro International Natural Park, tour fortified villages and pilgrimage towns, and relax as you cruise through the verdant countryside. At the mouth of the river is the lovely blue and white tiled city of Porto, the capital of northern Portugal and home to port wine. It has a fascinating regenerated area on the river front, and is wonderful to explore with its hilly streets and lanes, enabling you to quickly get lost as you soak up the atmosphere.

Porto, Portugal

As soon as you set sail, you reach a region largely untouched by tourism, visiting unspoilt villages and places you have never heard of, in a beautiful scenic setting. Along the way your experience will be enhanced by wine and port tastings, and the opportunity to sample locally grown produce, delicious hams, and traditional specialities of the region. With any luck, you will also get to see some flamenco dancing. If you have time, ensure you start or finish your journey with a side trip to lovely Lisbon: stand by for some serious hill climbing though! We like Uniworld's Portugal, Spain & the Douro River Valley sailing on board Portuguese-inspired S.S. São Gabriel in late September 2024 to enjoy the pleasant early-autumn heat without the crowds.

Douro river valley, Portugal

You can combine a Douro River cruise with a visit to three legendary Spanish cities: Salamanca, Madrid and Toledo.

  • AmaWaterways River Cruise Review: Autumn on the Douro
  • AmaWaterways river cruise review: The Enticing Douro

When it comes to Italy, your river cruise choices are more limited, but no less appealing for that. The canals and rivers in the area were once the ancient trade routes used by the Romans and the early Mediterranean settlers, enabling you to get a real insight into many cultures - including Roman, Etruscan, Istrian and Byzantine. The Renaissance of course is key to the region, and you will indulge in the arts, architecture and history of the region over many centuries.

Gondolas in Venice, Italy

Based in the magical city of Venice, the Venice Lagoon, Po river and Canal Bianco enable you to visit renaissance gems such as Verona, Padua, Bologna and Ferrara. While in Venice, visit the three outer-lying Venetian islands, Burano, Mazzorbo and Torcello. The beautiful canals and rivers of the region pass by picturesque lagoon islands with their colourful houses, and wild beach dunes and pine woods with an abundance of birdlife. Delicious seafood, local culinary specialities and fine wines are all a feature of cruises in this area. Uniworld's Milan, Venice & the Jewels of Veneto itinerary is a top pick here, on board S.S. La Venezia that sails only in this area. Go in May for pleasant temperatures and (slightly) fewer crowds.

Venice

There are too many treasures to mention, but we particularly recommend the Giotto frescoes in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua.

During the summer months from June to the end of August, the extraordinary arena at Verona is home to an unmissable Opera Festival - a visit can easily be combined with a Po river cruise.

The Elbe is one of Europe's most unspoiled rivers - predominantly natural, it has been unaltered by human technology. As a result, if it is on your wishlist - and it certainly should be - you will have to hunt around to find the cruise you want. This is because the river is so shallow that few vessels are able to navigate it. Expect spectacular beauty, particularly as it meanders through Saxon Switzerland, with wetlands and woodlands which have been virtually untouched.

Dresden, Germany

Amazing cities, risen from the rubble in war-torn East Germany, dot your route. You may start your trip in edgy Berlin, one of the most exciting cities in the world, before stopping in rococo Potsdam and embarking your ship in Wittenberg. Take in Dresden, magnificently restored, Meissen with its fine porcelain, and scenic cruising through Saxon Switzerland. The journey finishes in magnificent Prague, where an extended stay to explore is a must. Viking's Elegant Elbe 5-night cruise in October 2024 is a perfect taster for exploring the region, with options to extend with stays in Berlin and Prague.

Charles Bridge in Prague, Czech Republic

A day or two pre or post-cruise in fascinating and cosmpolitan Berlin or beautiful Prague.

The Elbe supports several wine-producing areas - the Saxonian Wine Route, Melnik and Litomerice.

Why a river cruise.

Even if you are an avid ocean cruise enthusiast, there are plenty of reasons why a river cruise in Europe should be on your bucket list:

Intimate experience

River cruising can offer a more intimate and up-close experience with the destinations as smaller ships wind through picturesque landscapes and historic cities – accessing narrower waterways and docking in the heart of smaller ports that large ocean liners cannot visit. Guests explore more diverse destinations, including smaller, less-visited gems. The small ship experience also makes it easier to get to know fellow guests for those who enjoy socialising on board.

Cultural immersion

River cruises in Europe frequently include guided excursions to historical sites, museums, and local attractions, providing guests with a deeper understanding of the regions they visit. Onboard enrichment programs, such as lectures and cooking classes, further enhance the cultural experience. Europe's rivers are lined with historic cities and landmarks, making river cruises an excellent choice for history enthusiasts.

Relaxed pace

River cruises tend to have a more leisurely pace compared to ocean cruises, allowing travellers to unwind and discover more in every destination they visit. There's less emphasis on the rush to the next port of call and more time to spend exploring different regions.

Accessible ports

River cruise ships can navigate relatively shallow waters and pass through lochs, allowing them to dock directly in the heart of cities and towns. This accessibility means that passengers can easily disembark and explore destinations on foot, enhancing their experience.

Specialised itineraries

River cruise itineraries can be highly specialised with each sailing an ode to specific interests such as history, wine, art, and music. Travellers have a depth of choice and can select itineraries that align with their passion and interests.  The destination becomes the centre point of the itinerary compared to some large ocean ships that may feel like a destination on its own.

Ultimately, river cruises offer a distinct and immersive way to explore Europe and can be an excellent option for those looking for a more intimate and culturally rich journey.

  • Hats and sunglasses are crucial to protect yourself from the sun during excursions.
  • Swimmers are important for those who want to enjoy the ship’s pools and local waterways when docked at port.
  • Don't forget comfortable walking shoes for shore excursions, as well as formal attire for special onboard dinners.
  • A lightweight, waterproof jacket and an umbrella can come in handy.
  • Toiletries and prescription medications should be packed, as well as electrical converters and adapters to charge devices.
  • Include basics like adhesive bandages, pain relievers, motion sickness medication, and any personal medical items you require.
  • A small, lightweight backpack is handy for carrying essentials during shore excursions.
  • Travel documents such as passports, visas, and cruise itineraries must be kept secure.

Top Tips for Europe River Cruises

Embarking on a Europe river cruise from Australia is a dream journey that promises unforgettable moments and cultural discoveries that are sure to remain with you for life. But here's a quick Europe river cruise guide and tips to keep in mind when making the long journey to Europe from any Australian city.

Book your flights and cruise early

Flying out of Australia in the European summer can be expensive, so get in early and book your flights to get the best savings. The same goes for your cruise. To get the cruise and itinerary you want, get in early and you will also likely benefit from some early bird savings. Discerning Traveller has a dedicated air department that can organise the perfect fly cruise package for you. Contact us today and we can organise flights to go along with your European river cruise for you.

Invest in packing cubes for additional convenience

Cruise cabins often have limited storage space. Packing cubes help you make the most of the available space by compressing your clothes and essentials. They are designed to fit snugly into your luggage, allowing you to bring more items without overloading your suitcase. Not only will you save room, but you’ll also be able to perhaps fit an extra souvenir or two.

Don’t try to see it all

Tempting as it may be, especially with a packed river cruise itinerary, try to take in the sights at a more relaxed pace to truly enjoy Europe’s quaint little towns and villages. Be mindful and think ahead when planning your trip and don’t physically exhaust yourself racing from one landmark to the next. Don’t forget – it’s still a holiday!

While most places have progressed to cards, cash still prevails in some places and might be the only accepted form of payment depending on where you go, especially in local markets and small shops. Also, consider that different countries might have different currencies besides the Euro. Be sure to review the countries you visit and try to exchange cash ahead of time.

Quiz your crew members for tips onshore

No better way to adventure like a local than from the eyes of people who’ve been there multiple times – the crew! Ask them where is the best place to eat, where to avoid, and their favourite landmarks and you won’t go wrong.

Choose the right season

Consider the time of year you want to travel. Spring and summer offer pleasant weather and longer daylight hours, while the holiday season can be magical with Christmas markets. Summer is often the best time to explore the full splendour of the European landscapes, but crowds are more substantial, and some popular destinations can be quite busy.

Participate in excursions

Take advantage of the included shore excursions. They provide a deeper understanding of the local culture and history. With local guides often leading the way, you have the best chance to truly dive into each port of call compared to doing your own free-form exploration. But keep in mind that river cruises follow a strict schedule, so be punctual to avoid missing the ship – especially if you decide to explore on your own.

Wake up early

The best way to avoid the crowds is to get up and out early. This is especially so for cities such as Venice, Paris, and Rome where it can be a little too crowded by 1pm. The morning in particular is quite lovely, particularly in coastal towns before the tourists wake up and start their own adventures.

Respect local customs

Some customs may be unique and different so it is worth researching a bit about the local customs of the places you are visiting so you can be more mindful, especially when visiting churches, temples, or other religious sites.

Whether you're interested in exploring historic towns, enjoying scenic vistas, or experiencing European culture, follow these tips for a memorable and enriching travel experience.

These sailings are known to provide exceptional, personalized service, as most welcome fewer than 200 guests at a time. On top of that, you'll spend the majority of your trip exploring a different port each day, as most destinations along the waterways are fairly close together.

What to expect: CroisiEurope is known for its wide range of destinations and is one of the only river cruise lines that operates custom-built ships on Germany 's Elbe river, the Guadalquivir and Guadiana rivers in Spain and Portugal, and Venice 's canals. Onboard accommodations are relatively basic, which keeps the cruise fare to a budget-friendly minimum. The cruise line aims to provide the best value for money in the cruise industry. Cuisine is focused on French food with some local flair in the main dining room, which is included in the cruise fare.

The passenger mix on a CroisiEurope cruise is relatively international, featuring large contingencies from France, Germany, the U.K. and North America. Announcements are typically given in both French and English. The cruise line sees a mix of older couples and groups as well as younger families, depending on the itinerary and time of year.

What travelers say: Several cruisers echoed that some of CroisiEurope's river ships are due for a refurbishment and that internet connectivity leaves a lot to be desired, while others maintain that the experience was superb.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Size: River cruise ships are smaller in size and the number of passengers they can accommodate, with one lounge and one main dining room being a typical setup.
  • Atmosphere: The overall vibe on a river cruise is more relaxed and far less busy than that of an ocean liner.
  • Onboard entertainment: River cruising is notoriously sleepy at night, with a focus instead on local enrichment like cooking demonstrations or liqueur tastings. Due to the busy schedule of port calls and excursions, most passengers are tired after a long day of sightseeing and don't mind a lack of nightlife.
  • Excursions: Most of your time on a river cruise is spent out exploring the destinations, which can sometimes be two stops in a single day. Passengers can choose from a variety of activities in port – including biking, kayaking and hiking – or explore the destination at a leisurely pace.
  • Cuisine: Cuisine tends to be focused on local specialties but is prepared to accommodate predominantly American tastes. Not every river cruise line offers unlimited drinks, but the majority include beer and wine at lunch and dinner, often showcasing regional varieties.
  • Price: River cruising typically comes at a much higher price point than ocean-based itineraries.
  • American Queen

Note that inclusions can vary by cruise line. For example, Viking rates – while not fully all-inclusive – cover beer and wine at meals and one tour per day, while gratuities and other drink packages are left to the discretion of the guest.

Avalon Waterways, on the other hand, offers a number of included tours in every port on select itineraries that range from cultural or culinary-focused to active.

In terms of inclusions and service ratios (the number of crew on board to guests), the following river cruise lines are considered the most luxurious:

First river cruise wont be our last! So relaxing with exquisite dining and accommodations on board. Definitely an older crowd, but you get to know almost everyone on board by the end of the tour and most are very pleasant and having as much fun as we did! So nice compared to big boat cruising; no pressure to see and do all the offerings. many included excursions were nice, with easy low effort walking offered. Transfers were perfect.

River Cruises in Western Europe Reviews

It was a great cruise. The food was amazing, the crew was really helpful, and the tours and tour guides were great. The only thing to imporve on if the WiFi which only worked half the time.
The Wi-Fi didn’t work as expected and it caused quite an inconvenience. The excursion plan is not as clear either. Overall it’s still a good tour but I think my last Danube river with Avalon is better than this rhino river cruise.
Great company to cruise with. Ship carries 110 passengers. Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner each day. Plenty of stops to sightsee. The castles along the Rhine make trip a very enjoyable cruise. All staff were great.

10 Things You Should Know Before Your First European River Cruise

T wenty-fifth wedding anniversary! Where did the time go? And most importantly, what should we do to celebrate? A few days later, with suspiciously perfect timing, a Viking river cruise advertisement dropped into our mailbox.

Two decades ago, we tried a Caribbean ocean cruise — big ship, lots of people, so much food and drink — and never did a second one. But a European river cruise sounded appealing: smooth water, a new city every morning on a small ship with less than 200 passengers, top-notch food and a customizable mix of culture, lectures and activities.

Ten months later, we were flying to Budapest, Hungary to begin our 11-day Passage to Eastern Europe on Viking Cruises. Here are 10 things we learned from our first river cruise:

1. You’ll Wind Up Feeling Young Again

If you are in your 50s and miss that young and spry feeling, you could do worse than go on a river cruise. We knew the average age would likely skew into the 60s, but we did not anticipate being the youngest couple on our ship. Nor did we mind. Being surrounded by seniors in their 70s and 80s having a great time seeing new places was an inspiration for our own future.

2.  You Won’t Find Too Many First-Time Cruisers

Those folks a generation ahead of us have been busy. We didn’t stand out just because of our relative youth, but also because this was our first river cruise. Nearly everybody we met had cruised before — not just with Viking, but other lines around the world as well. Ron, a former Army master sergeant, was on his seventh Viking cruise and even admitted to doing the 15-day Grand European Tour from Amsterdam to Budapest twice.

“I’d do it a third time if they let me do it for free,” he told us.

3. Water Levels May Cause Unexpected Detours

A huge river cruise appeal for my wife was the absence of ocean waves. No waves = no seasickness. But, unlike the ocean, river levels rise and fall. Too high, and the river ships can’t pass under certain bridges. Too low and, like us, the ship may have to stop short of some destinations and passengers will spend extra time on the bus. For us, low water levels triggered shore excursion substitutions in an unexpected Bulgarian city as well as a longer bus ride to Bucharest. Disappointing, but manageable. In other cases, passengers might have to abandon their river ship and bus transfer to an identical one upriver to continue the journey. Be prepared.

4. Every Day Is Casual Day

We were going to be in Europe, cruising on an upscale boat, and our fellow passengers would be older than us; accordingly, my wife and I planned to dress nicely: collared, button-down shirts and sleek sweaters and blouses. Viking emphasizes no formal dinners and a relaxed vibe, but I still almost brought a jacket for the evenings.

I’m glad I didn’t. Our fellow passengers overwhelmingly embraced comfortable casual — bright, plush sneakers; jeans; shorts and even a few Harley T-shirts — it was all okay.  There were definitely people like us, avoiding the jeans and sneakers look, and if you want to dress nicer, go for it, but it’s not necessary.

5.  Embrace Conversation

If you fear initiating new conversations with new people several times a day, a river cruise might intimidate you. Fear not. Most of our experienced river cruiser passengers seemed to crave meeting new people and were easy to chat with.

In our first 24 hours on the ship, I listened to a tale about an encounters with Perth Australia gold miners gone wrong, met a guy who got a Purple Heart when his helicopter crashed in Vietnam, admired the mangled fingers of a 75-year-old New England hockey player and listened to our dinner companion say, “I would not have married my husband if I had to do it again.” With him right there.

How Expedition Cruising Appeals to the Adventurous Traveler

6.  i’ll have both entrees, please. .

Yes, river cruise food is delicious. Nearly every meal featured regional specialties of the neighboring country. A few minutes before dinner seating began, the chief chef would describe his culinary creations to select from that evening. It was like a halftime speech. He’d finish up and we’d all race (or, in some cases, shuffle) out of the lounge to the dining room, pumped up for the coming delicacies.

Yet, as good as the shipboard food may be, take some time to…

7. Eat Locally

Don’t confine yourself to only the refined ship meals. A few steps away from your docked ship you’ll probably find flavorful local food well worth nibbling on. Some of my favorite meals of our trip were a platter of cevapcici eaten under a portrait of Uncle Tito (the Cold War era Yugoslav leader) in Belgrade and some meltingly lovely pumpkin phyllo pastry in Croatia.

8. Pace Yourself

With a new city each day and limited time, you can exhaust yourself trying to do too much. At one point, our new friends, Victor and Leslie, admitted that they signed up for too many excursions. There is only so much anyone can sample in a few hours or even a day, and we accepted that. A travel memoir I found in the ship’s library, Far and Away , gave a satisfying response to that dilemma: “Always leave something for next time, something to tempt you back.”  You’re on a cruise; make some time to simply relax on the sundeck or terrace, admiring the views.

9.  Find a Less-Traveled River

Ever heard of the Iron Gates of the Danube? I hadn’t either. Every passenger was out taking photos as our ship slipped into this dramatic gorge between Serbia and Romania. At one point, the giant face of an ancient Dacian king carved into the rock wall stared back at us.

Other European rivers plying well-traveled countries like Germany, the Netherlands and France host most river cruise traffic, but we delighted in discovering more unfamiliar East European countries. Every day gave us new stories and perspectives, often containing history that we’d never heard of. Nor was all of this history ancient. On successive days we got thoughtful perspectives from a local Croatian tour guide and then her Serbian counterpart on the 1990s Balkan War. When choosing your cruise itinerary, consider the lesser-known places.

10. Cabin Class Choices Matter

After choosing a cruise date and itinerary, you pick your cabin class. I agonized over that. Budget limitations dictated the cheapest, er, “most affordable” cabin for us, down on the lower deck and featuring only a narrow window just above the waterline. My online research emphasized that most of our cabin time would be at night when it was dark anyway.  Moreover, even during daylight hours, the ship would often be parked next to a dock or sandwiched between other cruise ships with someone else’s window inches away.

All of that was indeed true. And once on board, it was obvious that even the most spacious cabins could not compare to the nearly 360-degree views from the outdoor terrace and top sundeck where passengers gathered in the sunny afternoons. Still, I would have enjoyed more window space in our stateroom. Next cruise maybe I’ll spring for the fancy veranda cabin.

How to see the best of northern europe on a scandinavian cruise.

Cruise ship passengers enjoy the view of Sweden’s Stockholm archipelago from the Royal Caribbean ... [+] ship ‘Serenade of the Seas.’

If you’ve ever wanted to dive into the culture of the Vikings or explore what makes people in the Nordic region the so-called happiest on earth, you could do a lot worse than book a Scandinavian cruise.

Scandinavia—and Norway in particular—is an expensive place to travel around, so a cruise can make financial sense for those seeking an introduction to the region. For one price, you get your travel, accommodation, meals, and entertainment covered.

Such a trip offers the opportunity to sample various Scandinavian travel highlights , whether you prefer the Scandinavian capitals, the stunning Norwegian fjords, or soaking up the atmosphere of beautiful islands and historic ports in the Baltic Sea.

Popular Scandinavian Cruise Itineraries

Many different types of itinerary can be advertised as Scandinavian cruises. Typically, they focus on the Nordic capital cities. Some may also include the highlights of the Baltic Sea region, including the Baltic countries and ports in the north of Germany and Poland.

With popular Norwegian fjords cruises together with midnight sun and northern lights tours to the north of Norway also available, there is a lot of diversity in Scandinavian cruises.

Scandinavian Capitals : Cruise itineraries starting in the U.K. or Germany and calling in at two or even all three of Oslo, Stockholm, and Copenhagen have long been popular.

The Best Romantic Comedy Of The Last Year Just Hit Netflix

Apple iphone 16 unique all new design promised in new report, the world s best beers according to the 2024 world beer cup.

The Nyhavn district of Copenhagen, Denmark, is a popular destination for cruise ship passengers ... [+] visiting Scandinavia.

Helsinki is often included on such itineraries. If you want to explore modern Scandinavia while gaining access to some of the region’s best museums, such an itinerary is a perfect choice.

Such itineraries tend to be shorter, and are a great introduction to both cruising and Scandinavia, with limited sea days and plenty to see and do while in port.

Baltic Sea : Longer Scandinavian itineraries often include stops at Baltic Sea islands and ports. The beautiful Estonian capital city, Tallinn, or the Latvian capital, Riga, are particular highlights, as are ports on the northern coastline of Germany and Poland.

For those interested in Viking history, look out for smaller ship itineraries featuring Visby on the wonderful island of Gotland .

One such trip is this 12-night itinerary from Celebrity Cruises, which includes a visit to both Visby and Tallinn. Other highlights include a visit to Stockholm and Copenhagen, including an overnight stop in the latter.

The old city walls of Visby on Gotland island, a popular cruise port.

Norwegian Fjords : By far the most variety can be found in the Norwegian fjords region , with almost all major cruise lines operating at least some itineraries here. Although port calls in Flåm and Geiranger will soon be severely limited, many alternative ports will still be able to welcome some of the world’s largest cruise ships.

Whether you prefer the action-packed ships of Royal Caribbean or MSC, or the smaller ships that can sail along narrower fjords, there will be a Norwegian fjords itinerary for you.

Following the recent rise in popularity of the region as a cruising destination, the fjords season has extended, with trips available as early as April and as late as September.

British line P&O Cruises operates its relatively new megaship Iona in the fjords region for much of that period, with regular departures from Southampton on a popular 7-day itinerary.

Midnight Sun : Although all summer cruises in the region will experience long summer days, specific midnight sun itineraries set sail for the far north of Norway to let guests experience the thrill of being outside with the sun in the sky at midnight. Many of these trips visit Honningsvåg, which allows guests to travel by bus to the North Cape.

Northern Lights : In recent years, Scandinavia—or more specifically Norway—has become a year-round cruising destination thanks to the growth in popularity of northern lights cruises .

Aurora borealis in the sky seen from a cruise ship in Arctic Norway.

These itineraries can be found heading north of the Arctic Circle between October and early April.

Planning Tips For Scandinavian Cruises

Cruising in Northern Europe offers a fantastic variety of excursions and experiences, from historical city tours to adrenaline-filled outdoor adventures.

The region’s love of the outdoors lifestyle means active experiences are easy to find, both through cruise line excursions and independent operators.

The high levels of English comprehension across the region means booking your own activities and exploring ports independently is much easier than in many other parts of the world. Even so, look for independent tours that take place earlier in the day to reduce any time-related risk.

No matter when you visit Scandinavia, pack for all weathers. The height of summer can be marred by heavy rainfall, while it’s possible to get sunburnt in the snow-covered conditions of February and March.

Pack a versatile wardrobe. Layered clothing accommodates the region's variable weather, while specialized gear might be necessary for specific excursions.

Cruising And Sustainability

Prospective travelers should be aware of environmental concerns associated with cruising in this pristine region. The industry is moving towards sustainability, with initiatives to introduce zero-emission vessels in sensitive areas, particularly the UNESCO-listed Norwegian fjords .

Some local initiatives protesting against cruise travel have also gathered momentum, so cruisers should be aware of these issues before setting foot ashore.
