Norwegian Jewel

The 2,376-passenger Norwegian Jewel (the namesake of the line's Jewel-class ships) has been cruising since 2005 and and underwent an extensive refurbishment in 2022. It reemerged boasting more than 25 refreshed venues. With its low 1-to-2 crew-to-guest ratio, the ship makes tailored experiences a priority.

With 14 eateries and 12 bars and lounges, every guest has plenty of elbow room. Passenger favorites include the specialty Brazilian steakhouse.

While Jewel appeals to a variety of traveler types, it's especially well-suited for families thanks to its age-appropriate kids clubs, a video arcade and waterslides. As for lodging, cruisers can choose between Inside, Oceanview, Balcony, Club Balcony Suite and Suite category cabins. Those looking for even more space and luxury should opt for a cabin in The Haven, which offers multiple bedrooms and access to a private sun deck.

When it's time to eat, cruisers can order room service or grab a complimentary bite in one of three Main Dining Rooms, the buffet restaurant or the 24-hour pub. Guests staying in The Haven accommodations can also dine in The Haven Restaurant. An additional 13 coffee shops, quick-service eateries and a la carte restaurants that serve specialty cuisines like Mexican, Italian and Texas-style barbecue are available as well.

Norwegian Bliss departs from ports in Los Angeles , Miami  and  Seattle for sailings throughout Alaska, the Caribbean, Panama, Mexico and the Pacific Coast.

U.S. News Insider Tip: While Norwegian Bliss is a large ship with a capacity for up to 4,004 passengers (at double occupancy), the vessel has an elegant feel with upscale touches like those you’d find on a smaller luxury ship. The Observation Lounge is the perfect example of an upscale space on the larger mainstream ship. – Gwen Pratesi, Contributor

Norwegian Cruise Line Southern Caribbean Cruises

They say good things come in small packages and that is definitely true for the quaint islands in the Southern Caribbean. These islands may not be large in size, but they are large in character and culture. Sail to the Southern Caribbean with Norwegian Cruise Line to indulge in the tropical cuisine and enjoy the sun-soaked days that melt into steamy Caribbean nights. Make the memories you’ll have for a lifetime by kite surfing in Aruba or scuba diving in Barbados. Visit with local artists in Antigua and find the perfect, one-of-a-kind souvenir to take home. You’ll have so much fun on your Southern Caribbean cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line, you won’t want to return home.

Things to Do on a Southern Caribbean Cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line

Your days will be filled with fun, excitement, and adventure on a Southern Caribbean cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line. You can spend your days hiking through a lush rainforest, admiring the unique flora and fauna. Or, soar high above the glistening turquoise sea while parasailing. If food is your passion, then a tropical food tour will immerse you in the culture of the island. Of course, the crystal clear waters are perfect for snorkeling or scuba diving. Please continue below for recommended excursions in the Southern Caribbean with Norwegian Cruise Line:

St. Lucia scenery and mountains

  • Island Hiking (St. Lucia, Caribbean) When you think of the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, you’ll probably think of sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and warm weather. Of course, St. Lucia has all of that, but you could also visit a part of the island many visitors miss by hiking through the lush rainforests. Experience the unique flora and fauna up close and enjoy a different side of St. Lucia.

Parasailing over blue water in St. Thomas

  • Caribbean Parasailing (St. Thomas, Caribbean) Parasailing may be a common beach activity, in general, but you can parasail in paradise in St. Thomas. Soar above the glistening turquoise waters and enjoy a bird’s eye view of this beautiful island.

Underground Cave in Bridgetown

  • Visit Harrison’s Cave (Bridgetown, Barbados) This cave is one of Barbados’ premiere attractions and an excellent way to spend some time while in port. After a short drive to the cave, you’ll board electric trams that will guide you through the caverns while your tour guides provide the history. You’ll see beautiful galleries of stalactites hanging from the roof of the cave while majestic stalagmites raise up from the floor.

Colorful Buildings of San Juan

  • Take a Tropical Food Tour (San Juan, Puerto Rico) One of the best ways to experience a city is to eat your way through it. A food tour through Old San Juan City will take you to three tasting locations, and you’ll also learn about the history and culture of the oldest city flying under the U.S. flag. You’ll enjoy local favorites like mallorca, which is a sweet bread, and San Juan’s signature dish, mofongo, which is made with plantains and chicken or vegetables!

Caribbean Artwork in St. Johns

  • Experience the Caribbean Art Scene (St. John’s, Antigua) Instead of spending your entire day relaxing on a beach, check out the local art scene while visiting St. John’s, Antigua. You’ll meet a local painter and watch as she paints some of her favorite island scenes, then participate in her painting class and create a souvenir to take home!

Snorkeling in Clear Water in Aruba

  • Bike and Snorkel Experience (Oranjestad, Aruba) Explore the beautiful island of Aruba by mountain bike! You’ll get to see all the historic and natural treasures Aruba has to offer, like the Rock Wish Garden, Coral Plateau, Alto Vista Chapel, and more! Then, once you’ve reached Malmok Beach, put on your snorkeling gear and enjoy the breathtaking view of the tropical fish and other marine life.

The best Norwegian Cruise Line ship for every type of traveler

Gene Sloan

What's the best Norwegian Cruise Line ship? Over the years, I've sailed on all but three of Norwegian's 19 vessels, and my personal favorite is Norwegian Prima. I love its stylish design and upscale feel, as well as its wide mix of eateries, bars and entertainment.

Still, Norwegian Prima isn't necessarily the best Norwegian Cruise Line ship for you. Whether you'll have a better time on one of the other 18 vessels in the Norwegian fleet will depend a lot on the type of traveler you are.

Norwegian has some vessels, such as Norwegian Encore, that are loaded with family-friendly attractions such as waterparks and go-kart tracks that are perfect for families with teens and tweens. To me, Norwegian Encore is an even better choice than Norwegian Prima for families with school-age kids.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Other Norwegian cruise ships, such as Norwegian Epic and Norwegian Sun, have specific features that might make them better options for solo travelers or retirees. Certain Norwegian ships are best for budget travelers, while others are best for luxury travelers.

In short, the best Norwegian cruise ship for you will depend on a bunch of factors, and which ship is best for a trip with your family might not be your top pick for a couple's cruise or girlfriends' getaway.

Here we list our top picks for the best Norwegian cruise ships for five different types of travelers.

Norwegian Encore: Best for families

norwegian cruises 2022 caribbean

The best Norwegian Cruise Line ships for families, hands down, are the four giant, activity-packed ships of its Breakaway-Plus class: Norwegian Encore , Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Escape. Of these, Norwegian Encore — the biggest of them all — is our top pick.

At 169,116 tons and carrying 3,958 passengers, Norwegian Encore is the largest ship in the Norwegian fleet. That means it has the most space for the many over-the-top family fun zones that are at the core of the four Breakaway-Plus vessels — a series of ships that was specifically designed with families in mind.

For starters, Norwegian Encore is home to some of the most thrilling waterslides at sea, as well as a kiddie splash zone that will have your little ones squealing with delight. But those are just the appetizers when it comes to family fun on the top deck of the ship.

Norwegian Encore is also the setting for one of the biggest go-kart racing tracks at sea . (Yes, this is a thing — Norwegian debuted the concept on its Breakaway-Plus-class ships and now has a go-kart track on five vessels.) Two decks high and nearly 1,150 feet long, the Norwegian Encore Speedway includes four sections that extend up to 13 feet over the sides of the vessel. The racecourse also features a middle-of-the-track observation area where your family and friends can cheer you on to victory — and even shoot you with "lasers" that'll give you a boost of power.

Related: The 5 best cruise lines for families

In addition, Norwegian Encore has a large laser tag area on its top deck (one that I can tell you from personal experience is a blast) and a massive indoor gaming and virtual reality zone called the Galaxy Pavilion. Both are tween and teen favorites.

That's all on top of dedicated children's play areas, pools and family-friendly entertainment that will keep your family busy from morning to night.

In short, there are so many family-friendly things to do on Norwegian Encore that you and your kids likely won't be able to do it all in a single, weeklong cruise.

Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva: Best for luxury lovers

norwegian cruises 2022 caribbean

Luxury lovers have two new top choices in the Norwegian fleet: Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva .

Unveiled in 2022 and 2023, respectively, the 3,195-passenger vessels are the first entrants in a new class of Norwegian ships that the line has designed to be more upscale than its earlier vessels. An "elevation" of the brand is how executives describe it.

The upscale turn included loading Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva with the largest variety of suites and high-end cabins (13 categories in all) of any ships in the NCL fleet, including the largest three-bedroom suites of any new cruise vessel. If it's swanky digs you're after (and you have the money to spend), you'll find plenty of options on these ships.

Extra suite categories are just the start of what makes Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva the best Norwegian cruise ships for luxury lovers.

Notably, the entire back of each of these ships is dedicated to an upscale luxury zone for the fancy set called The Haven. Rising eight decks high, it's home to 107 of the aforementioned suites, a sprawling private indoor lounge area, private outdoor lounge and pool areas, and a private restaurant — all exclusively for the use of the deep-pocketed biggies who pay up for one of its suites.

Related: The 8 best cruise lines for elegance and exclusivity

We've seen these private The Haven suite areas on Norwegian ships before but never on this scale. If it's living large on a Norwegian ship that's your goal, you're not going to find anything better than this.

Outside of The Haven, other areas on these ships have a more elegant feel of the sort you find in the fleets of Norwegian's higher-end sister brands, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises — albeit on a bigger scale.

The entryway to each of these ships, for instance, deposits you at the three-story-high Penrose Atrium, which may be the most beautiful atrium of any big ship at sea. It has a curvy, sculptural feel as if the entire space were an art piece.

It's a look that carries over to a bevy of high-end eateries, including Nama, a new-for-Norwegian sushi restaurant with a design that is as sophisticated as the sushi it serves. Also striking is the look of a version of Le Bistro, Norwegian's signature French eatery, that can be found on both of these vessels. Both of the spaces are built around three massive crystal chandeliers costing nearly $100,000 that hang down to the floor — a showstopper of a design element. Gold-leaf wallpaper lines its booth seating.

Notably, the public areas that include these restaurants feel more spacious than many of the other ships in the Norwegian fleet. Indeed, they are. Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva were built with a higher ratio of space to passengers than earlier Norwegian vessels, which itself is an upscale touch. The ships also have a higher crew-to-passenger ratio than many Norwegian ships, leading to better service.

In short, these are the Norwegian ships to book when you want to take things up a notch.

Norwegian Sky: Best for budget travelers

norwegian cruises 2022 caribbean

Norwegian Sky is the Norwegian ship to pick when you're looking for a low-cost, easy-to-do getaway — at least in the summer months.

Based in Miami for part of the year, the 24-year-old vessel operates a mix of short three- to five-night voyages to the Bahamas out of the cruise hub as well as longer trips to the Caribbean from spring to fall that have one thing in common: They're unusually affordable on a per-night basis.

In many cases, Norwegian Sky sailings out of Miami will start under $100 a day per person, though it depends on the week and pricing for sailings can vary significantly. We sometimes see the ship's shorter sailings starting as low as $249 per person for the entire cruise.

Indeed, the ship often is at the top of the list when you sort cruises by lowest price on Norwegian's website.

For would-be Norwegian cruisers, Norwegian Sky's shorter sailings out of Miami serve as a sort of "test the line" opportunity. Their short time frame and low pricing mean you're not out a lot in time or money if you don't love it as much as you hoped. These shorter sailings cater heavily to first-time cruisers and Florida locals who can book on short notice and drive into the port for a quick escape.

One of two ships in the line's Sun class that date to the turn of the millennium, Norwegian Sky is far from the snazziest ship in the Norwegian fleet. This is both because of its age but also its size. At 77,104 tons and carrying 1,944 passengers, it's just half the size of Norwegian's biggest ships and has far fewer venues, from bars and restaurants to entertainment spaces. There is no giant water park on its top deck or a go-kart track to keep the kids busy all day, so it's not the best Norwegian Cruise Line ship for families.

Related: The 8 classes of Norwegian Cruise Line ships, explained

That said, Norwegian Sky has its allures, one of which is that it has a much more intimate feel than the line's bigger vessels. It's a great choice for adults on a budget who are satisfied with the basics.

Norwegian Epic: Best for solo travelers

norwegian cruises 2022 caribbean

When it comes to the best Norwegian cruise ship for solo travelers, one ship stands out above all the others: Norwegian Epic.

Unveiled in 2010, Norwegian Epic caters to solo travelers like no other large cruise ship at sea — from any line, not just Norwegian — with an unusually large private zone for solo travelers that has its own two-story lounge for solo mixers as well as special solo cabins.

Tucked away in the middle of the ship, this "studio" zone is essentially a private escape for solos, with more solo cabins — 128 — than you'll find on any other ship at sea.

The cabins measure just 100 square feet but are superbly designed to maximize storage space. They're also clustered around the exclusive Studio Lounge, which has its own private bar and a television area where solo travelers can mingle at daily hosted happy hour gatherings.

Only solos staying in the solo cabins (via keycards) can access the Studio Lounge, meaning that you and your new solo friends will have the place to yourselves.

Related: The best cruise lines for solo travelers

Norwegian Epic was the first Norwegian ship with an exclusive solos zone, and it was such a hit the line later added them to eight more vessels. But none of the latter zones are as big as the one on Norwegian Epic.

norwegian cruises 2022 caribbean

The bigger Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Bliss all have an 82-cabin solo complex, while two older ships — Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway — have solo areas with 59 cabins. The line's two newest vessels, Norwegian Prima and Norwegian VIva, have 72-cabin solo complexes spread over two decks.

Norwegian also offers four solo cabins on its Hawaii-based Pride of America.

Having sailed in one of Norwegian Epic's cabins for one, I can confidently declare them among the coolest solo digs at sea. I particularly love the "Jetsons" futuristic-style design and the multicolored mood lighting.

One big caveat: They're all inside cabins without an ocean view, although most have a window that looks out onto a corridor.

Related: Why a windowless inside cabin isn't so bad

A bigger caveat, perhaps, is that these solo cabins have become so popular they often sell out far in advance and at prices that aren't much better than booking a cabin for two.

Norwegian Sun: Best for retirees

norwegian cruises 2022 caribbean

For older travelers looking for a Norwegian ship that isn't filled to the gills with children, Norwegian Sun is the perfect option.

Dating to 2001, Norwegian Sun is one of Norwegian's oldest and smallest vessels, and it lacks many of the family-focused onboard attractions that are typical for the line's newer and bigger vessels. You won't find big waterparks, go-kart racing tracks or laser tag zones on this ship.

Norwegian Sun's top deck mostly comprises sunning areas, with a single pool and whirlpools, as is typical for ships built more than two decades ago.

As a result, it draws far fewer families than most of the vessels mentioned above and caters more to an older crowd of mostly couples.

Norwegian Sun also is the ship that Norwegian deploys on some of its longest and most destination-focused itineraries, the type that particularly appeals to retirees looking to see more of the world.

Over the next two years, for instance, Norwegian Sun is sailing lots of long voyages out of such less-common home ports as Benoa, Indonesia; Melbourne, Australia; Auckland, New Zealand; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Papeete, Tahiti.

The sailings out of Papeete will offer the chance to visit such iconic French Polynesian islands as Bora Bora, Raiatea and Moorea. ia and Thailand in-depth, with departures ranging from 13 to 18 nights — the sort of cruise that appeals more to older couples than families.

The sailings in and out of Buenos Aires and Melbourne, all on the longer side, will offer in-depth explorations of the southern half of South America (Argentina, Uruguay and Chile) and New Zealand, respectively.

Norwegian Sun is also one of the smallest and least kid-focused of the five ships the line deploys to Alaska in summer, making it a good choice for retirees wanting to visit that destination. Families with kids naturally gravitate to the two giant, activity-packed vessels Norwegian sends to Alaska each summer — Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Bliss.

Related: The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Norwegian ship

At 78,309 tons, Norwegian Sun is less than half the size of the biggest Norwegian ships, and it holds just 1,878 passengers at double occupancy. (Compare that to more than 4,000 for Norwegian's biggest vessels.) Expect a far more intimate experience than what you'll find on most of the ships mentioned above.

Note that due to the ship's small size, some of Norwegian's signature features, including a private The Haven suite complex and solo cabins, aren't found on the ship. Still, you'll find more than half a dozen eateries, including several main dining rooms, a casual buffet, a diner-style pub, a steak house, an Italian trattoria and a French bistro as well as a showroom with nightly shows, a casino, a multipurpose basketball/volleyball court, golf driving nets and a jogging track.

Bottom line

Norwegian Cruise Line's fleet consists of 19 ships that come in a wide range of sizes and feature differing mixes of venues and activities. Some are jampacked with fun zones that make them perfect for families, while others are geared toward couples and retirees. Some ships have attributes that make them stand out for luxury, solo or budget travelers.

If you're considering a Norwegian cruise, it pays to study not just the itineraries that are available from the line but the specific ships that are operating the itineraries. You want to make sure you end up on the best Norwegian Cruise Line ship for you.

I tried the search function but couldn't find an answer and short of calling NCL...I'm wondering if my fellow CCers could advise when cruises for 2022 could be released by NCL. (maybe from prior experience).

I see they show Hawaii dates for 2022 but nothing else and I am specifically looking for cruises out of New Orleans during early 2022 (yes I know we have lots of time).

Hawaii have always been years in advance since they only have the one ship there and it isn't going anywhere else.

Typically, they would release the whole wave mid-December for the year two in the future (e.g. Dec. 2019 for 2022).  Lately, they have been dropping more sailings in batches by ship or region earlier than all in mid-December.  In this case though, I'd guess mid-December for that region.

dexddd     - thank you, I'll note my file to start looking in January 2020.

Does anyone have new info regarding when the Winter 2021 Caribbean cruises will be released? We're trying to compare Celebrity, HAL and Norwegian itineraries/prices for November/December 2021, but only Celebrity has released their sailings yet. They also have a very good promotion at the moment, so we're anxiously waiting to be able to compare the itineraries/prices/perks to HAL and Norwegian.

They should be out very soon, possibly even this week.  They released 2019-20 this week in 2018, while 2020-21 was released a bit earlier in December 2018.

Thanks, I will keeping checking daily over the next weeks!

I think this is the first time in a long time that most other lines put out some of  their 2022 (up to April) Caribbean sailings before NCL.

Sailed on the Gem October 2019 twenty of us from Boston to the Caribbean and returned to Boston.  We loved it.  Ncl moved the Gem back to New York.  Does anyone know if NCL plans to bring the Gem or another ship here for roundtrip Boston to Caribbean cruises. As of now just Bermuda cruises and canadian cruises.

We did this same cruise 2018 on the Dawn. It was great leaving and ending from Boston. Hope NCL schedules more in the future. Boston needs more options than Bermuda and Canada.

NCL really aren't making comparison with other lines (in our case Celebrity, but Carnival and Royal Caribbean have also already released) for a November/December 2021 Caribbean itinerary/price out of Tampa/Port Canaveral.

Celebrity has a fantastic promotion during these weeks, and I suppose NCL's promotion is in the "better half", but it's hard when there are no itineraries and prices to compare with!

Should we expect itineraries and prices to be somewhat the same as Nov/Dec 2020, specifically we're looking at Escape Western Caribbean from PC (or whichever ship will be sailing from PC in late 2021).

I really just want to know when the next time I can/will sail on the Escape is. It's my favorite ship and right now I am not seeing a sailing on her in the foreseeable future. Have the Bliss in March, our first Princess sailing in August, leaning towards our first Celebrity sailing in January 2021, so might not be back to NCL until May of 2021... The Escape will be in the Baltics through 2021, so now 2022 is looking like our next real chance. Hope they get those itineraries posted soon!

Was Escape the first NCL ship you cruised on?

It seems that many NCL'ers (us included) favorite ship is the first ship we sailed. That being the GEM out of NY. Just curious

Sand and Seas

Escape wasn't our first NCL cruise (far from it!), but it is a great ship and we consider it one of our favorites, too 😊

I'm also getting curious to see where they are going to place these ships in the future.   I wonder what the delay is?

It was the first ship I sailed on period, NCL or otherwise. And I think it makes sense that the first ship you sail on might be your favorite, because it's what you compare all future ships to. The other ship I have sailed on the most is the Bliss and while I do love the Bliss as well, the things I prefer about the Escape are Howl at the Moon, Pincho, the location and layout of the Garden Cafe, the fact that there's a bar in the theater, the free ropes course and larger mini-golf, the wider Deck 7 with more space in O'sheehan's, the stage and dance floor in the Manhattan Room, Choir of Man, and the location and layout of the Thermal Spa. The things I like better about the Bliss are the Observation lounge, the Cavern Club, and Los Lobos.

Any updates on release of 2022 dates?

RedwingHockeyFan

RedwingHockeyFan

I'm wondering if they are still working out the logistics of it since the first Leonardo is expected in June 2022.

I'm copying my reply from another thread with the same subject:

I just called the European call center (the agent's accent sounded Eastern European), and she told me that the Winter 2021 itineraries should be released in the beginning of March. This was of course just her claim, nothing can be found anywhere online about it, but i guess I should check the website regularly over the next few weeks.

No matter how you choose to ford the fjords, you'll see why Norway is known for these natural wonders.

Try pancakes stuffed with bacon, sour cream and lingonberry jam, or warm up with a creamy fish soup.

In Bergen, wander alongside the wharf and through the narrow alleyways of Bryggen, the oldest part of Bergen founded in 1070. Here you'll walk amongst colorful UNESCO-listed wooden buildings, preserved or rebuilt in their original Medieval style.

Norway, Kristiansand Cannons at Fort Marina

PIRATES AHEAD

Travel to the southern city of  Kristiansand  to visit the picturesque Christiansholm Fortress, built in the 17th century on the seaside promenade in the city center. Walk along five-meter-thick walls, built to protect the city from pirate assaults. In Oslo, don't miss the Akerhus Castle and Fortress built in 1299, which has also functioned as a royal residence and a prison. You'll find history everywhere you look during your Norway vacation.

Norwegian Rosemaling Flower Art

SCANDINAVIAN SOUVENIRS

In Norway's larger cities, like Oslo and Bergen, you can go shopping in big malls and department stores, but there are also many small boutiques, antique shops and markets all throughout the country. Immerse yourself in the local culture by admiring the colorful wooden houses and medieval ruins and indulging in the fresh regional cuisine. When you visit Norway, you'll find like you've entered a whole new world.

Norway, Aurlands Fjorden

FJORD FOR DAYS

Originally a Norwegian word describing a narrow inlet formed within a glacial valley, the term "fjord" has since gone international. Norway is home to no less than 1,000 fjords, so be sure to check out the country via these winding waterways. Admire the Geirangerfjord in  Geiranger , the Aurlandsfjord in  Flam  or the Lustrafjord in  Skjolden  for a heavenly view.

Iceland Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa

NORTHERN EXPEDITIONS

While you're in the region, why not explore some other  Northern European  cities? Norway's neighboring countries, such as Sweden, Denmark, Finland and  Iceland , each have their unforgettably unique characteristics, so be sure to relax in  Reykjavik , Iceland's geothermal spa surrounded by volcanic vistas, or stroll through the stylish Swedish capital, built across 14 islands.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Prepare for Nordic Adventure

As an Arctic wonder, Norway offers adventure, attractions and charm all year round.

If you visit the country in the summer, you'll avoid the chilly temperatures, you'll be able to witness the Midnight Sun and will find that more attractions are open. In winter, however, you'll be able to see a northern wonderland covered in a magical layer of snow, which you can enjoy by snow shoeing, skiing or snowboarding. Between late September and late March, it's dark from early afternoon until late morning, and this is the best time to see the Northern Lights.

No matter what season you decide to visit, just remember the Norwegian saying, "There's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes." While the climate between different areas of the country varies widely, the Norwegian winters are long and cold in general. If you wear the right clothes, though, you'll be just fine.

Norwegian Cruise falls as raised profit outlook fails to impress

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. plunged after its improved profit outlook disappointed investors’ high expectations amid an industry boom that’s caused record demand for sailings.

Earnings for this year will now be about $1.32 a share, the company said in a statement. That was up from its prior outlook of $1.23 a share and above the average analyst expectation of $1.28, but failed to impress zealous shareholders wanting more from surging ticket sales.

Shares fell as much as 9.46% as of 9:50 in New York, extending this year’s decline to about 14%. Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. and Carnival Corp. also fell.

Record post-pandemic demand for cruises has ratcheted up expectations. Royal Caribbean, the largest ship operator by market value, last week raised its full-year profit outlook above even the highest Wall Street estimate tracked by Bloomberg.

“We view this as a solid update, but not as strong as peer Royal Caribbean’s first-quarter update, nor what we believe were elevated expectations heading into the print,” Barclays analyst Brandt Montour wrote in a note Wednesday morning.

Norwegian’s revenue grew 20% in the first quarter to $2.22 billion, falling short of analysts’ $2.19 billion projection. Earnings per share excluding some items was 16 cents, beating an expected 11 cents.

Only a third of analysts covering the cruise operator recommend buying the stock, compared to at least three quarters for both Royal Caribbean and Carnival.

Princess Cruises is taking a page out of the ultra-luxury cruise industry with new all-inclusive, $3,000 cabins

  • Princess Cruises says its new Sun Princess and upcoming Star Princess will have all-inclusive cabins.
  • Guests who've booked the new Sanctuary Collection category would get an inclusive package and private lounge.
  • It's a move that could appeal to ultra-luxury cruisers .

Insider Today

If you want to go on an all-inclusive vacation at sea, you no longer need to book an ultra-luxury, ultra-expensive cruise line .

Just sail on Princess Cruises' new ship instead.

In October, Princess says its two-month-old Sun Princess will debut in the US with the company's first-ever Sanctuary Collection, an adult-only lounge exclusive to guests who've booked one of the collection's high-end cabins. These luxurious accommodations comprise 10% of the ship's 2,157 staterooms, including all its suites.

But the Sanctuary's biggest perk arguably isn't the lounge's private pool and restaurant — it's the all-inclusiveness , a rarity among mass-market cruise lines.

It's the Carnival Corp. brand's latest appeal to ultra-luxury cruisers

Mass-market cruise lines like Princess, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian typically follow the " budget airline " strategy: charge a cheap base fare and offer plenty of irresistible up-charged amenities (like specialty restaurants, as is the case of Sun Princess).

It's a stark contrast to the high-end cruise industry, where all-inclusivity is often considered the standard.

For example, luxury cruise line Explora Journey's fare includes alcoholic beverages, WiFi, and access to the spa — amenities that would typically cost extra on ships like Sun Princess. On Regent Seven Seas , all this, plus excursions, pre-cruise hotels, and roundtrip flights are also included in the cost to sail.

Related stories

Over the last few years, Princess has begun following in these high-end cruise lines' foosteps.

In 2022, it launched Princess Premier, an optional inclusive package covering amenities like WiFi, drinks, some upcharged restaurants, and workout classes. It's the same package Sanctuary Collection guests would get, along with the private restaurant and adult-only lounge with cabanas, a pool, and private events.

The exclusive lounge concept is nothing new. Royal Caribbean's two largest cruise liners have a "neighborhood" exclusive to suite guests. The same applies to Norwegian, Celebrity, and MSC Cruises' vessels.

However, while these competing retreats offer perks like drink packages, WiFi, or private restaurants, none are as "inclusive" as Princess'.

In 2024, Sun Princess' Sanctuary cabins start at more than $3,000 per person for a weeklong Caribbean cruise in mid-December. To compare, the cheapest interior cabin for the same itinerary starts shy of $700 per person.

The cruise line says its next ship, Star Princess, which will debut in late September 2025, will also carry the Sanctuary Collection.

Following in the footsteps of high-end, all-inclusive cruise lines could be a wise decision for Princess. These luxury vacations at sea have become increasingly popular as travelers continue to spend big on their trips.

Like Princess, expedition cruise company HX recently shifted to an all-inclusive model as well.

Back on dry land, hotel giants like Hyatt and Marriott have also seen a boom in these "everything free" resorts .

Apparently, every vacationer — whether on water or solid ground — just wants one thing: stress-free poolside lounging with bottomless drinks.

Meet the Norwegian-owned cruise challenger to Carnival and Royal Caribbean that just raised $1.54 billion

Viking had humble beginnings.

The now-listed cruise company was once just a venture by “two guys with two mobile phones and four river ships,” as the company’s CEO Torstein Hagen puts it in Viking’s prospectus .

But a lot has changed in 27 years. Now, the Norwegian-owned, Bermuda-based business has a staff of 10,000 catering to guests with a taste for the finer things in life.

The cruise operator, which made its name in European river tours, launched its initial public offering at the New York Stock Exchange on Wednesday. It raised $1.54 billion , according to Reuters, making it the biggest listing in the U.S. this year.

Viking rebounded strongly after the COVID-19 pandemic decimated cruise travel and its public listing comes as luxury consumers are spending more on travel and personalization, and less on shopping. Some of Viking’s competitors, such as Carnival and Royal Caribbean, have seen record demand for cruises—opening a world of opportunity for the smaller company.

Viking’s beginning

Viking was founded in 1997 by Hagen, who controls most of the company with his daughter, Karine Hagen.

From the start it aimed to give travelers an immersive experience in local cultures as they toured in one of its four river vessels. In the last three decades or so, Viking has expanded its fleet to 92 ships offering three types of experiences via rivers, oceans and expeditions.

The company has also benefited from some savvy marketing plays—it sponsored Masterpiece and Downton Abbey and offered themed trips linked to those shows.

Between 2015 and 2023, Viking’s revenue grew at a compound annual rate of 14.4%, outpacing the rest of the cruise industry in the river and luxury ocean segments during this period, the company said in a public filing .

Viking has carved its strategic niche among older, well-off customers, a group it believes is “underserved.” These are not boozy party boats, and there are no kids allowed.

“Our target demographic has greater financial stability, which can make them more resilient to economic conditions and more willing to invest in high-quality travel experiences,” Viking said.

And that’s the space it hopes it can dominate, with the help of its IPO funds.

The Viking founder and road ahead

Hagen didn’t enter the world of cruises till the 1970s.

A physics major in school, Hagen did his MBA at Harvard University before entering management consulting. He dabbled with entrepreneurship a few times before finally succeeding, Bloomberg reported .

When business for Viking’s river cruises, its first service, began to pick up, Hagen expanded to offer journeys worldwide—from expeditions in Antarctica to river cruises in Vietnam.

Viking is on an expedition of its own now that its shares are traded. Last year, the cruise line hosted close to 650,000 guests and generated $4.7 billion in revenue, up by almost 50% from 2022. Its underlying profits were $1.1 billion for the same period, according to Viking's prospectus.

The cruise company is still much smaller than rivals like Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian. But it’s a global leader in some segments, such as luxury ocean cruises.

Following a strong open, Viking’s market valuation is over $10 billion, putting Hagen’s wealth at $5 billion.

As the appetite for luxury travel builds , Viking is ready to ride the wave.

As global tourism faced up to a second year of unprecedented crisis , UNWTO began 2021 by counting the cost so far . At the same time, however, the emergence of vaccines brought hope . The Global Tourism Crisis Committee met to explore what this meant for safe travel and the restart of tourism, while the announcement of the winners of the UNWTO Global Start-up Competition recognized the role culture and creativity will play in tourism’s restart and recovery .

Feb

April - June

Collaboration and innovation were the focusat the start of the second quarter. UNWTO partnered with IATA on a new Destination Tracker to give both tourists and destinations clear, impartial and trusted advice. And a new Start-up Competition was launched to find the best ideas for accelerating rural development through tourism. In May, the launch of the Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO generated significant interest from Members in every global region.

Mar 2021

July - September

As destinations in Europe welcomed tourists back for the peak summer season, UNWTO highlighted the role of  digital solutions for the safe restart of the sector. But UNWTO also looked ahead, to a more sustainable future , working with key partners to  reduce plastic waste and consumption across every part of the sector. Together, we celebrated World Tourism Day around the theme of Tourism for Inclusive Growth, a message of solidarity and determination that was echoed on a global scale.

April 2021

October - December

The final quarter of 2021 began with cautious optimism as UNWTO’s Barometer showed signs of improvement in tourist arrival numbers during the summer season in the northern hemisphere. A new partnership with Netflix will bring the message of tourism as a driver of opportunity to a massive global audience, while in November, UNWTO was tourism’s voice at COP26 and signatories to the landmark Glasgow Declaration keep growing. Finally, against the backdrop of the UNWTO General Assembly , the programme of work for the coming biennium was approved and 77% of Members voted to secure a second mandate for the Secretary-General from 2022-2025.

Growing and Moving Forward

UNWTO brings together political leaders from across the globe to deliver a strong, coordinated response. Governments, destinations, fellow UN agencies and international organizations met at key international events joining efforts to rethink tourism. Institutional coordination has proven crucial to find the solutions that build a smarter, greener and safer tourism.

Leaving Nobody Behind

The pledge to ‘ leave nobody behind ’ means nobody should miss out : Not now as we support the sector in the face of crisis, and not in the future as tourism starts again. Tourism is a proven driver of equality and opportunity. And that’s why we turn words into actions, delivering guidelines and action plans , to ensure everyone can enjoy the opportunities tourism brings.

A Shared Vision

Advancing the transformation of the tourism sector , partnerships are the only way forward. In 2021, UNWTO signed agreements with international organizations and the private sector to step our vision for the future of tourism: innovation , education , sustainability , green investment , rural development.

World Tourism Barometer: September 2022

UNWTO updates World Tourism Barometer and reports international tourism back to 60% of pre-pandemic levels from January to July 2022

unwto tourism highlights 2022

Below are excerpts from the September 2022 release of the UNWTO Tourism Barometer :

  • The steady recovery reflects strong pent-up demand for international travel, especially in the months of June and July which are part of the Northern Hemisphere summer season. The easing or lifting of travel restrictions in an increasing number of countries also contributed to boost results.
  • International tourist arrivals almost tripled (+172%) in January-July 2022 compared to the same period of 2021. Numbers climbed from -64% in January 2022 (versus 2019) to -28% in July, the strongest month since the start of the pandemic.
  • Asia and the Pacific (+165%) saw arrivals more than double in the first seven months of 2022, though they remained 86% below 2019 levels.
  • The ongoing recovery can also be seen in outbound tourism spending from major source markets. Expenditure from France was at -12% in January-July 2022 compared to 2019 while spending from Germany stood at -14%. International tourism spending remained at -10% in Belgium, -23% in Italy and -26% in the United States.
  • The uncertain economic environment seems to have reversed prospects for a return to pre-pandemic levels in the near term. 61% of UNWTO Panel of Experts now see a potential return of international arrivals to 2019 levels in 2024 or later while those indicating a return to pre-pandemic levels in 2023 has diminished (27%) compared to the May survey (48%).

TOURISM TRENDS 2022

unwto tourism highlights 2022

11 Aug TOURISM TRENDS 2022

The situation for tourism remains rather unusual as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The crisis has marked a significant change for everyone, and above all for tourism, one of sectors hit hardest by the virus. 2020 was the year in which international tourism came to a near-complete standstill, and the only alternatives were domestic and local tourism.

2021 has seen some improvements, but only in a very subtle way as restrictions are still in place and many countries keep their borders fully or partially closed.

It is difficult to make an estimate for 2022 as it is not known how the pandemic will evolve. However, it is possible to talk about the new tourism trends that are likely to emerge over the coming year: – International travel with restrictions still maintained by both destinations and airlines in order to offer 100% security to the consumer.

– Reinforcement of COVID-19 testing; two years after the pandemic, COVID testing will still be in place as a preventive measure. – Conscious travel will be advocated. Travel to more distant destinations, but with prolonged durations of stay, as consumers look to enjoy as much of each place they visit as possible. – Green travel. Climate change is a problem that is present and growing. Consumers now are much more responsible and aware of the reality they live in on daily basis.

– A new trend is the “ed-ventures”. It is about combining education and holidays for the youngest members of the family. While adults may need to telework or attend meetings, their children can be doing workshops and learning in a playful way.
