Rolling Stones Conquer Europe

By Ron Donaldson

Ron Donaldson

T he Rolling Stones machine is in motion once again. After playing a surprise club gig in London and three warmup dates in Scotland, the group officially began its summer tour of Europe on June 2nd in Rotterdam, Holland. By the time the Stones reached Paris for a pair of shows at the 70,000-seat Hippodrome d’Auteuil on June 13th and 14th, they had played before roughly half a million people. And when the forty-four-date tour ends on July 26th – Mick Jagger ‘s fortieth birthday – nearly 2 million fans will have passed through the turnstiles, making this the biggest European rock tour ever.

Even so, it’s been a pretty low-key affair. In Paris, for instance, fewer than a dozen kids, some of them munching Big Macs from a nearby McDonald’s, waited for the Stones to arrive at the hotel where they were staying, just off the Champs Élysées. And it’s been that way for the entire tour. All the action is onstage. All the interest is in the music. No scandals, no outrageous behavior. As was the case on last fall’s U.S. tour, the Stones are maintaining a low-profile, clean-cut image, and the media are eating it up.

Major magazines in every European country have done cover stories on the group, but so far there have been only two real interviews. A reporter for the Hamburg-based Stern magazine asked Jagger if he ever made contact with the public by, say, riding the subway. “Wait a minute,” Jagger sneered. “What has riding a subway got to do with reality? That’s only something people do ’cause they don’t have money.” And in Paris Match, Jagger revealed that as a teenager, he didn’t get along with his parents; that he can walk the streets of Paris, London and New York without being bothered by the public; that he always carries a gun; that he owns a château in the Loire Valley; that he trains hard to keep in shape; and that he loves his ten-year-old daughter, Jade.

Deemed equally newsworthy have been the tour’s logistics and statistics. Two teams of sixteen trailer-trucks are crisscrossing Europe, carrying stage sets and equipment through eleven countries. The stage is the same one the band used on its U.S. tour: sixty-four feet wide, with eighty-foot ramps stretching out from the right and left sides, it features massive scrims painted with postmodernist pastel renderings of cars, guitars and record albums. The group is traveling with an entourage of sixty-eight – the same as in America – and the Stones themselves have chartered a Boeing 707 to get around in.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

The band’s entire show, which is again being run with clockwork-like precision by promoter Bill Graham, remains virtually unchanged from the American tour. When the gates of the Paris race track opened at 10 a.m. on Sunday, June 13th, 70,000 eager fans, who seemed to range in age from fifteen to forty-five, were on hand. The concert started promptly at one o’clock, and the opening acts, George Thorogood and the Destroyers and the J. Geils Band (both veterans of the Stones’ U.S. dates), drew hearty responses – despite a sudden rainstorm that was drenching the audience.

When the sun reappeared, the field was a sea of mud – the crowd had used the track’s protective tarpaulins as shelter from the storm. But at 4:30, when Duke Ellington’s “Take the ‘A’ Train” wafted from the loudspeakers and a voice announced, “Ladies and gentlemen, the Rolling Stones ,” the miserable conditions didn’t seem to matter. The Stones tore into “Under My Thumb,” and it immediately became clear that it had been worth the six-and-a-half-hour wait.

As the Stones went through essentially the same set they had perfected in the States – twenty-six tunes, including “Let’s Spend the Night Together,” “Time Is on My Side,” “Start Me Up,” “Let It Bleed” and “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” – the audience crowded up to the barriers in front of the eight-foot-high stage, and tens of thousands of hands were raised to clap along with the songs. From the field, one could see hundreds of tiny figures straining to get a glimpse of the festivities from the windows of the luxury apartments overlooking the race track.

The band, augmented by Allman Brothers keyboardist Chuck Leavell and sax players Bobby Keys and Gene “Daddy G” Barge (a sideman on Gary U.S. Bonds’ early records), seemed to get better and better as the show progressed. Jagger, dressed in red-and-white-striped tights, pranced up and down the stage, tossing asides to the crowd in barroom French. Keith Richards and Ron Wood pumped out the group’s trademark licks and huddled together at one mike to share their occasional vocals, while the sturdy rhythm section of Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts kept everything rolling.

There were a few surprises, such as a cover version of the Big Bopper’s “Chantilly Lace,” which never really got off the ground. But for the most part, it was a repeat performance of the Stones’ U.S. extravaganza – and everybody loved it. By the time Jagger rode out over the crowd in the cherry-picker crane, the roar of the fans was deafening. As the group left the stage with a last merci, a tape of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture blasted out, and the fireworks began. Four minutes later, as the fireworks reached a climax, six bright-yellow pickup trucks snaked out of the park and headed up the boulevard toward the center of Paris. The audience was still cheering.

Yet it wasn’t the old music and mayhem. And, unlike the American tour, it may not even be music and money. Even though the tour is causing the band’s new live album to sell briskly everywhere the Stones have played, and even though the group’s gross should come close to the American tour’s $40 million (in Paris alone, the ticket gross exceeded $2 million), Jagger is telling the press that he and his mates will be lucky to clear $250,000. “We never make money here,” the poor boy claimed, citing the astronomical expenses incurred on the European tour.”This time it’s music, music, music.”

1982 EUROPEAN TOUR

1982 European Tour Overview

After a five-month break, the Stones picked up where they left off, as they embarked on their first European Tour in six years.   29 of the 36 shows took place in stadiums, the exceptions being three theatre dates in Scotland to kick things off (after the band had been unable to secure a performing license for an outdoor concert there) a gig at the 100 Club show in London a couple of days later and a trio of arena shows in Frankfurt at the end of June.   The setlists were similar to the end of the US Tour (save for ‘Waiting On a Friend’ being dropped) and remained pretty static with just 26 songs played over the entire tour in shows which consisted of 23-25 songs per night. The Big Bopper’s ‘Chantilly Lace’ (never performed before this tour or since) and ‘Let It Bleed’ were dropped during the run of Frankfurt shows and ‘Angie’ was brought back in Madrid where it remained for the final nine shows.

Prior to 2012, nothing had ever been released officially from this tour.   In November of that year as part of the six archive releases to celebrate the band’s 50 th anniversary, the final date of the tour, a show in front of 125,000 at Roundhay Park in Leeds was made available as a download.   A DVD and 2-CD package was subsequently released as ‘Live at Leeds – Roundhay Park’ in 2015.   Visually, its a strange release, concentrating pretty much exclusively on the band onstage, with next to no crowd shots.    It is a historically significant show however, in that not only would it be the band’s final public appearance for seven years, but it would be the last with founding band member and longtime pianist and road manager Ian Stewart, who died in December 1985.

In October 2021, the Super Deluxe Edition of the ‘Tattoo You’ 40 th anniversary reissue featured the audio of a full-length show from Wembley Stadium on 26 th June (save for one song, ‘She’s So Cold’ which comes from the previous night, presumably due to the butchered intro it received on the 26 th ).   The last 45 minutes of this show has been available as a high-quality pro shot video since 1982, so not releasing the whole thing in a visual format was something of an opportunity missed.

Number of shows – 36

Number of shows in circulation – 35 (only the 100 Club concert is missing)

Recommended shows - The two full length releases mentioned above should adequately cover the needs of most fans for this tour, although there are better performances. (The first Wembley show is the better of the two for starters, although its only available as a very good audience recording).   Madrid (7 th July) and Naples exist as partial soundboards with the first Gothenburg show (19 th June) being probably the pick of the audience recordings.

Personnel: Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts. Ronnie Wood and Bill Wyman with Ian Stewart (piano) and Chuck Leavell (keyboards), Bobby Keys (sax) and Gene Barge (sax)

rolling stones 1982 european tour

The Rolling Stones European Tour 1982

The Rolling Stones ' European Tour 1982 was a concert tour of Europe to promote the album Tattoo You . It was in effect the European continuation of their long and successful 1981 US tour , and promoted by Bill Graham . It was during the Berlin concert on 8 June 1982 that thousands of balloons were released, inspiring a member of the audience, the guitarist Carlo Karges from the Nena (band) to write the song " 99 Luftballons ", which became a worldwide hit. [1] The tour was the last the Stones would conduct for seven years.

The Rolling Stones Complete 1982 Wembley Concert Available for the First Time

by Paul Cashmere on October 22, 2021

The Rolling Stones complete Wembley, London concert from 25 and 26 June 1982 has become available for the very first time as part of the new ‘Tattoo You’ box set.

The new live recording titled ‘Still Life’ is not the same concert released as the ‘Still Life’ live album in 1982. The original album was from the American leg of the 1981 tour and released to coincide with The Stones European dates in 1982.

The Stones played the exact same setlist at Wembley on 25 and 26 June 1982 so it is uncertain which takes are used for this compilation. It would be safe to assume that the tracklisting features what would have been considered the best moment from either night.

The Rolling Stones 25 and 26 June 1982 setlist for Wembley, London was:

Under My Thumb When The Whip Comes Down Let’s Spend The Night Together Shattered Neighbours Black Limousine Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me) Twenty Flight Rock Going To A Go Go Chantilly Lace Let Me Go Time Is On My Side Beast Of Burden Let It Bleed You Can’t Always Get What You Want Band Introductions Little T&A Tumbling Dice She’s So Cold Hang Fire Miss You Honky Tonk Women Brown Sugar Start Me Up Jumpin’ Jack Flash (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction

When the Rolling Stones rolled into Newcastle to perform at St James' Park 40 years, it was the biggest rock concert the city had ever hosted.

It was the beginning of the era of 'stadium shows' in our region. The Stones' would blaze a trail and be followed by the likes of Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Queen who all drew huge crowds at St James' Park in the the years that followed.

Back on June 23, 1982, Mick Jagger and the band were in the middle of a European tour in support of their Tattoo You album, and it was six years since UK audiences had seen them in the flesh. The press called it "Europe's largest travelling show". The amount of equipment and number of people needed to keep the band rolling was astonishing.

A fleet of 26 trucks would be used to transport the gear between huge UK concerts in Newcastle, Bristol and Wembley. Among the items being hauled around the country were the sections and scaffolding for a 240 foot-long stage and a luxury portacabin fitted with a bar and table-tennis table for back-stage relaxation.

For these huge outdoor shows, the Stones were using a 100,000-watt PA system, and the performance would be illuminated by 400,000 watts of lighting. One hundred permanent road crew members and many more hired locally for each concert kept the show on the road.

Mick Jagger, Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones at St James' Park, Newcastle, June 23, 1982

For Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and co, it was a far cry from the Stones' earliest visits to Newcastle 20 years before in the early 1960s when they'd played in the small, sweaty confines of the Club a’Gogo on Percy Street.

It was warm and drizzly back in 1982 when the day of the St James' Park show arrived. There would be 38,000 in attendance and queues started forming outside the venue in the early hours ahead of the doors opening at 2pm.

For hungry fans, hot dogs were on sale for 50p, and hamburgers 60p - and as for merchandise, you could pick up a tour sweatshirt for £7. Support came from George Thorogood and the Destroyers, and the J Geils Band who’d recently enjoyed a huge hit on both sides of the Atlantic with Centrefold.

The Stones, who had been staying at the Holiday Inn in Seaton Burn, arrived at St James’ in a luxury coach just before 7pm. They were whisked backstage where in the hospitality tent, champagne flowed and fellow rock stars including Sting and members of Genesis dropped by.

Newcastle's biggest ever rock show would prove to be a triumph and the Evening Chronicle reviewer posted a highly positive write-up next day. “The drizzle reigned all night but by nightfall Mick’s magic had rained down on 38,000 fans drying their spirits and rekindling the fire of good old rock’n’roll,” we reported. "Their sell out concert at St James’ Park was a mesmerising spectacle, a non-stop musical party, an unqualified success.”

The 25-song show kicked off with Under My Thumb. Songs new and old followed, including classics such as You Can’t Always Get What You Want, Tumbling Dice, Miss You, Honky Tonk Women, Brown Sugar, Start Me Up, and Jumping Jack Flash.

“Jagger is still the most charismatic live performer in rock”, our man noted. “He cuts a striking figure, making full use of the 240ft-long stage, running from end to end to tease and torment in fine athletic form.

"Meanwhile, Richards seemed to be only marginally less popular than Jagger, eliciting huge cheers every time he moved to one side of the stage, with the inevitable cigarette jammed in his mouth. The band kept the level of excitement at a consistently high level throughout the two-hour set, and the enthusiasm among the good-humoured crowd didn’t flag for one second.”

Satisfaction was the inevitable encore and the show came to an end with the strains of the 1812 Overture and a spectacular firework display. And with that, the Stones were on their way to their next show at Wembley, while Newcastle United also picked up £35,000 for hosting the event.

The Rolling Stones would return to St James' Park in 1990 - and incredibly they're still treading the boards in 2022. Currently the midst of their European Sixty tour, celebrating six decades in the business, Jagger, 78, Richards, 78, and Ronnie Wood, 75, are set to rock out this and next week on two huge dates at London's Hyde Park, the scene of their legendary performance back in July 1969.
