Fat Tire and big butts. You really can't put it much simpler than that. The Choice City will be hosting these annual events; one for its 24th outing, the other celebrating nine years.
Tour de Fat is known worldwide; a celebration of what makes Fort Collins, "Fort Collins." Tour de Corgi may not be as widely known, but it is known for its wide butts.
The best part about these two events happening in Fort Collins is that we can attend them both; no need to pick which one.
You can get costumed-up for the Tour de Fat, whether you're participating or just spectating; then, come out again to see the costumed corgi's parade with their humans.

Tour de Fat: Legendary as Ever
by Tim Wooten | Aug 31, 2023 | Bicycle Advocacy , Bike Month , Community Rides , Events , More Bikes | 0 comments
Picture this: the sun was shining, the air was crisp, and Mountain Avenue was transformed into a swirling vortex of color and costumes. Bicycles of all shapes and sizes were decked out in streamers, balloons, and the “occasional” Barbie themed. Yes, you read that right – Barbie was a legitimate fashion statement at this event. It was a day when ordinary bicycles became works of art, and riders became larger-than-life characters.
The Tour de Fat was more than just an opportunity to don outlandish costumes and embarrass your inner kid – it was a chance to give back to the community. Every year, proceeds from this whimsical wonderland go to four non-profits: Bike Fort Collins, Overland Biking Association, the Fort Collins Bike Co-Op and Send Town Bike Cub, on a mission to make biking in this community better, one pedal stroke at a time. So, donning an 80’s leotard while cycling around town wasn’t just a fashion statement; it was a statement of support for a worthy cause.
The bike parade was undoubtedly the crown jewel of the event. Imagine a parade of bicycles, each one helmed by a character straight out of a fantastical world. From pirates to under water sea creatures, Ken and Barbie to sassy disco dancers, the creativity knew no bounds.
But the parade was just the tip of the handlebars. Tour de Fat included a medley of activities from the bike pit, where coordination was key and laughter was inevitable, to the circus show on the main stage that kept the audience in amazement. New Belgium’s grounds were a smorgasbord of delights for the senses. Food trucks lined the back, live bands jammed on the main stage, DJ’s out front, inviting attendees to groove, twirl, and even a dance-off to win a new bike.
The magic of the Tour de Fat was that it wasn’t just a one-day spectacle. It was a reminder of the power of community, the importance of giving back, and the sheer joy that comes from embracing your inner child and letting your imagination pedal wild.
As we eagerly await the next installment of this pedal-powered extravaganza, let’s hold onto the laughter and camaraderie that is Tour de Fat!

LOOK: Fort Collins Colorado Tour de Fat 2023 Was Legendary This Year
- Share on Facebook
That's a wrap on Tour de Fat 2023. The annual event hosted by New Belgium Brewing is a staple in Fort Collins , Colorado .
New Belgium Brewing describes Tour de Fat as a pedal-powered parade where you can be whatever you want to be. New Belgium Brewing hosts Tour de Fat in Fort Collins and Asheville, North Carolina.
The event hosts musical acts, a fashion show, and interactive events.
The highlight of Tour de Fat is the costumes. Tour de Fat encourages attendees to dress in costumes. And wow, Northern Colorado really showed up.
The most common costume this year was Barbie by a landslide, which makes sense because Barbie is the movie of the summer. You would be walking and hear "hi Barbie, hi Ken!" constantly.
I saw so many fun costumes, and seeing how Northern Colorado residents express themselves was thrilling.
Here is a look inside Tour de Fat 2023.
This Is What 2023's Tour de Fat in Fort Collins Looked Like
A confession.
I will admit I accidentally slept through the parade, which is the most fun part of Tour de Fat. I still had a great time, though. It felt like Halloween for adults.
Sure, Tour de Fat is hosted at a brewery, but it is an extremely family-friendly event. There were many interactive booths and activities for kids.
I went with my girlfriend and her two younger siblings. Her siblings at 15 and 12, and they had a blast.
I would highly recommend Tour de Fat. If you don't live in Fort Collins, it is worth the trip. Tour de Fat is free and extremely budget-friendly.
I am already planning my costume for next year.

New Belgium Brewing hosts 23rd Tour de Fat

Participants of New Belgium Brewing’s Tour de Fat line up along West Mountain Avenue in preparation for the bike parade Sept. 3. Tour de Fat is an annual event featuring live music, costumes and beer.

Editors Note: This article was updated to reflect more accurate information about the nonprofit organizations.
New Belgium Brewing hosted its 23rd Fort Collins Tour de Fat event this past Saturday. Tour de Fat is one jam-packed day celebrating biking, local breweries, music and more.
The mission of Tour de Fat is not only to host a day full of joy and enthusiasm but to raise money for local nonprofit organizations, such as Overland Mountain Bike Association, Fort Collins Bike Co-op, Bike Fort Collins and Send Town Bike Club.
Throughout its years of operation, Tour de Fat has promoted many local breweries and raised millions of dollars for bicycle nonprofits. Organized by New Belgium Brewing, Tour de Fat requires teamwork from the breweries and the nonprofit biking organizations to make the event a success.
One such nonprofit biking organization is Bike Fort Collins, which has a mission to create a safe community for all bicyclists, according to its website.
“Bike Fort Collins — while intimate with Tour de Fat through our involvement for many years (20-plus) in helping to provide all the volunteers needed to host the event — have also been the fortunate beneficiaries of the event all of those years,” Bike Fort Collins Executive Director Dave Dixon wrote in an email to The Collegian .
Because of the pandemic, Tour de Fat didn’t happen in 2021. Fortunately, this only added to the excitement and anticipation for this year’s event.
At 9 a.m. last Saturday, thousands of bicyclists came together in countless different costumes. Zane von Hemert, a Colorado State University student, got on his bike while adjusting his alien costume.
“I’m not from Colorado, so I hadn’t heard of Tour de Fat until last week, when a friend told me,” Von Hemert said. “But I would never turn down an opportunity to ride my bike and drink beer for a day, especially while wearing an alien costume.”
At approximately 9:30 a.m., the bike parade started. Speakers were playing music, and bikers were riding while cheering with smiles on their faces.
Cormac Osborne, a CSU student, got off his bike after completing a lap around the loop and decided to call it a day. Osborne’s regular shorts and T-shirt stood out in the crowd.
“I obviously didn’t get the memo about the dress code, so I feel a little embarrassed,” Osborne said. “But I’m really glad I got out here. It’s a cool environment to be in.”
At 11 a.m., the breweries opened. For most of the bikers, it was their cue to stop riding and reward themselves with beer supplied by New Belgium Brewing.
Riley Ahern, a local bike enthusiast, sipped the foam off an IPA while laughing with a group of friends.
“I’ve been in Fort Collins for four years now, and Tour de Fat is honestly my favorite event of the year,” Ahern said. “I was really bummed about not being able to do it last year, and I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time.”
Ahern wasn’t disappointed with this year’s Tour de Fat experience.
“It just seems like everyone is stoked to be here,” Ahern said. “The costumes were hilarious, the people were really nice and it just feels like a good community to be a part of.”

Meow Wolf’s Vortex
Friday-Sunday: Meow Wolf’s radiant, trippy Vortex Festival sets up this weekend at the west Denver JunkYard venue for three days of music, art and dancing. Colorado EDM titan and headliner GRiZ is taking a hiatus from performing after the fest, so fans may want to catch his sets, but there’s lots more in tow Friday, Aug. 25-Sunday, Aug. 27.
The event includes performances from Remi Wolf, TOKiMONSTA, Justin Martin, Claude VonStroke and locals such as Kiltro . Limited edition prints of an “otherworldly collab between GRiZ and Mr. Melty” will be on sale at Vortex, producers wrote, and proceeds go to Rainbow Alley, a nonprofit for LGBTQ youth. Vortex also boasts a number of interactive visual and performance artists.
The all-ages, rain-or-shine event takes place at 1098 Yuma St. in Denver. Tickets are $59.50-$109.50 per day or $250 for the whole event. vortex.meowwolf.com — John Wenzel

Food fight for a cause
Sunday: Pair good food and drinks with a good cause this weekend at the Food Fight for Reproductive Rights , coming to The Block Distilling Co. (2990 Larimer St., Denver) on Sunday, Aug. 27. Local chefs and bartenders will pair up in teams to create the best bite-and-beverage combination in a friendly competition designed to raise awareness about abortion access. The first Food Fight came together after the U.S. Supreme Court reversed the longstanding Roe vs. Wade decision, which guaranteed a woman’s right to abortion, and enabled several states to ban the procedure. Colorado has since seen a flood of women coming to seek medical care.
That’s why proceeds from the event benefit the Colorado Doula Project , a nonprofit that provides free logistical and emotional support for people seeking abortion access, and COLOR Latina , which works to ensure Latinx individuals have opportunities and resources for their health of mind, body, and spirit, including access to abortion.
Some of the chefs you’ll see at the Food Fight this year include Chef Camille Shoemaker (Lady and the Wild), Chef Carlton Halaby (Point Easy), Diego Coconati (Lucina), and Peruvian Chef Caroline Zubiate . The winning team takes home the Golden Uterus. Noon-3 p.m. Tickets: $100 at theblockdistillingco.com/food-fight-for-reproductive-rights . — Tiney Ricciardi
Saturday: Get ready to hit the pavement as Denver’s 50-year-old Organization of Chinese Americans presents its annual Panda Run starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 26. “Proceeds from the Panda Run will benefit the youth in our APA community,” organizer Victoria Chen wrote, noting that the event is vital to the organization’s scholarship opportunities for Asian American and Pacific Islander students.
The walk/run at Great Lawn Park , 101 Yosemite St. in Denver, features a pre-celebration of the annual Moon Festival and picnic after runners cross the finish line. The event is free to attend and race registration costs $35-$40 at runsignup.com/race/co/denver/panda . — John Wenzel

Tour de Fat announces 2021 parade and party in Fort Collins
Tour de Fat will return to Fort Collins in 2021 on Aug. 28, after a year off due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Fort Collins-based New Belgium Brewing will bring back the annual bike parade bursting with color and creativity that ends with a party at the brewery.
The parade, made up of costumed riders on bicycles and, often, other innovative pedal-powered contraptions, will start at 10 a.m. at Mountain Avenue and Sherwood Street. The spectacle will be on full display while it travels through Old Town before ending at New Belgium, where the party will last throughout the evening.

"Attendees can expect a return of the classic entertainment and activations they have come to know and love," a news release Friday promised. The event usually includes entertainment, music, games and New Belgium beer.
But no such details were given Friday, though more information is expected to come in August.
Tour de Fat got its start in 1999 and is a "celebration of community through bicycles and beer," according to New Belgium. The event benefits local bike nonprofits and trails and supports bicycle education and advocacy.
