We are looking into biking their " Tuscany By The Sea" trip in October of 09. We have completed long bike trips in the US, but never with a tour group. We wondering about overall: Satisfaction? Accomodations? Overall trip experience?

A Fantastic Journey- Tuscany Small Group Bike Tour

This tour exceeded my expectations, on so many levels. The riding was wonderful, the countryside was glorious, the food was outstanding....but the attention to detail, from guides Luca and Rikki, was just phenomenal. If you want to tour Tuscany by bike, in a way that make you feel totally connected to the area, book this trip! It will not disappoint!

Cycling Puglia & Matera Tour

Cycling Puglia & Matera

Antinio was a good & attentive guide and made sure we rode safely. The side roads were a little hazardous with pot holes that required concentration and anticipation to avoid. Water supply from the van was warm. Could have been kept cool which would have been great given the hot days. We had 4 picnic lunches with the van guy Pietro setting these up. In hindsight maximum of 2 would be better asc there were plenty of options for lunches in cafes etc.

A great cycling vacation! The individual stages were well chosen (route, length, landscape, hotels) and the navigation has largely worked very well. With the slopes, especially in the heat, a good condition or possibly an e-bike is required.

This was a fabulous trip. It was though billed as an “easy” grade ride. The hills we encountered on days 1 and 2 of the cycling were way in excess of easy. One was something like a 1 in 6 ascent on a main road over a full kilometre. We did this same ascent twice in an hour or so. Sorry but this was not in line with the grading.

Fantastic tour, even for the novice cyclist! We didn't start riding bikes until 3 months before the tour started and we had NO trouble keeping up with the daily mileage. The guides on our tour were awesome and made the entire experience a lot of fun and very informative. The food everywhere was AMAZING!!! Hotel accommodations were first class and included a breakfast that would put anything in the USA to shame! We had fresh chocolate croissants every morning! Gorgeous countryside, and even the other people on the tour were a lot of fun and everyone got along wonderfully. Very, very worth it, even if you've never cycled before. Don't miss this experience!

Quebec Eastern Townships Bike Tour  | 6-days | Level: 2-Easier to Intermediate.  Though most of this tour is in the province of Quebec, it starts and ends in northern Vermont. Bring your passport! Cycle through the beautiful French-speaking Eastern Townships where you are treated to gorgeous vistas, pretty villages, and excellent inns.

Woodstock Self-Guided Bike Tour  | 6-days | Level: 2-Easier to Intermediate.  If you are more self-sufficient and able to take care of basic bike repairs on your own, this could be the Vermont trip for you! What Guests are Saying

Two cyclists standing in front of Hill Farmstead Brewery sign

Having taken multiple Trek Travel trips I didn't know what to expect on my first gravel version, I was happy that this was just as good as the other trips. The guides were top notch and knew their stuff for gravel and showed great initiative and discernment in making the trip a success despite the challenging weather and surprisingly tough and rewarding course.

Eric, Trek Travel Guest

A group of cyclists in front of a covered bridge

I had a great time on the trip. We had a good group of travelers, and the guides did a good job of facilitating a positive atmosphere on the trip. The attention to detail for catering to riders needs ... was great. The mix of Today and Avid rides seemed to work out well for both groups. I did all Avids, but it didn't seem like either group was inconvenienced by the other, which is logistical challenge.

Colin, Trek Travel Guest

Two women in cycling gear smiling

This was my fourth Trek Travel trip and Shay and Steve were excellent guides. It was the inaugural Trek Travel Gravel trip and was excellent.

Linda, Trek Travel Guest

Four cyclists in front of the Craftsbury General Store

This was my first trip with Trek Travel, so I wasn't sure what to expect, but my experience exceeded all expectations. Can't wait for my next Trek Travel trip. Routes were excellent and provided riders some fantastic views and also provided a great taste of the area.

Rider Information

Rider Level: 3

Terrain: Hilly

The unpaved surfaces on our Vermont Gravel bike tour are rated as Intermediate. About 70% of the riding is unpaved. You can expect gravel roads that are primarily smooth dirt roads with small, sparse gravel. At times, there will be short sections of rougher road that may have deep or chunky gravel, potholes, ruts, or washboard like surfaces. We even managed to find a couple of short segments of singletrack! This trip takes place between the Vermont's Green Mountains and the Northeast Kingdom. The ride distances are relatively short because the terrain is hilly. You will tackle short, steep hills throughout the trip. Once on gravel roads, expect minimal traffic and little access to services as you will be traversing rural areas. Your guides will be able to drive most of the roads with the support van. This destination is best suited to guests who want to cycle every day. Because of the terrain and/or remoteness of the hotels and riding routes, there are few, if any, non-riding options available. If a non-rider wants to accompany a rider guest on this trip, they would need to spend many hours in the van and/or at the hotels on the trip. Due to this, we strongly discourage non-riders from this destination. As an alternative, call a Trek Travel Trip Consultant at 866-464-8735 for trip suggestions where more non-rider activities are available, such as:

The Champlain Valley

Meet your guides in Burlington for a quick transfer into the Champlain Valley. Here, we’ll meet Chef Matt Jennings at his restored barn and kick off the trip with lunch featuring products from his favorite local farms. Then it’s time for our first ride through the agricultural breadbasket of Vermont. Stop in scenic Bristol for a creemee, the state’s beloved soft serve, then choose to transfer to our first hotel or opt for an extra climb over Lincoln Gap—widely considered the most challenging of the four passes that cross the mountains of central Vermont. Check into our picturesque inn in the heart of the Mad River Valley before tonight’s private dinner with the hotel chef.

Meals : Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Bristol, Lincoln, Waitsfield Accomplished : 22 miles / 35 km, elevation gain: 1,879 feet / 573 meters Longer Option : 37 miles / 60 km, elevation gain: 3,982 feet / 1,214 meters Accommodations : The Inn at Round Barn Farm

Exploring the Mad River Valley

Situated at the center of the state, the Mad River Valley’s reputation as a ski destination is well-known. But the summertime brings a whole different set of pleasures: a massive network of gravel roads lie parallel to the main corridor on Route 100, lined with farms that yield a staggering variety of local products: organic meats, small-batch cheeses, shiitake mushrooms, berries, and heirloom butter. Today is a veritable two-wheel farm tour as we bike around the valley meeting these producers, sampling their goods, and putting a face to a new generation of agriculture. The afternoon culminates in an al fresco lunch at a mountain farmstead. Bike back to Waitsfield to relax before dinner.

Meals : Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Waitsfield, Warren, Sugarbush Accomplished : 31 miles / 50 km, elevation gain: 3,244 feet / 989 meters Longer Option : 45 miles / 73 km, elevation gain: 5,218 feet / 1,772 meters Accommodations : The Inn at Round Barn Farm

Cider and Stowe

Today we leave Round Barn and head north into Stowe following the Mad River. Cross the Winooski River before pedaling into Waterbury, a frozen-in-time New England town where we’ll pause for lunch. Back on our bikes, we’ll head to Hunger Mountain with a stop at a local farm to sip some fresh-pressed apple cider. Catch a lift to our next hotel in the van, or choose to keep riding to the Gold Brook Covered Bridge. Built in 1844, this protected landmark is the area’s only surviving example of an original covered bridge. Upon reaching our next hotel, settle in and relish the amenities of the property before heading into Stowe later in the evening for dinner.

Meals : Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Middlesex, Waterbury, Stowe Accomplished : 22 miles / 35 km, elevation gain: 1,066 feet / 324 meters Longer Option : 32 miles / 51 km, elevation gain: 2,095 feet / 639 meters Accommodations : Edson Hill or Talta Lodge

Smugglers' Notch

When in Vermont, Smugglers’ Notch tops the list of must-do rides. This narrow, twisty pass is understandably challenging—it serves as a ski resort in wintertime—and we’ll approach it through the Green Mountains, hauling our way up the 1,000-foot cliffs. After a few warmup miles we hit a six-mile section at 5% average grade; luckily, the waterfalls and mountain views make for a good distraction. At last, we’re rewarded with a long, exhilarating descent that’s full of epic leaf peeping in the fall. With our big ride behind us, sit down to lunch at a local farm and refuel on home-grown produce. Call it a day and return to Stowe for an afternoon of shopping and strolling the town. Or, if you’re feeling strong, tackle Smugglers’ Notch in reverse and earn bragging rights for conquering this pass forwards and backwards. We’ll spend our final evening together celebrating over a festive final dinner.

Meals : Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Smugglers’ Notch, Jeffersonville, Pleasant Valley Accomplished : 21 miles / 33 km, elevation gain: 2,076 feet / 633 meters Longer Option : 36 miles / 59 km, elevation gain: 4,542 feet / 1,384 meters Accommodations : Edson Hill or  Talta Lodge

Country Roads

Savor a slow start at Edson Hill—perhaps a fireside coffee or crisp morning walk—or take out your bike for one last loop on Vermont’s rolling roads. Your guides will transfer you back to downtown Burlington or to the airport as you bid farewell to this beautiful corner of the country.

Meals : Breakfast Destinations : Stowe
