Travel vaccinations

Measles cases are increasing worldwide.

Before travelling, check that you and your family have received the recommended measles vaccinations.

Do not travel if you have symptoms of measles or have been in contact with someone with measles.

If you develop symptoms of measles after your return to Canada, call a health care provider right away.

Global Measles Notice

When travelling outside Canada, you may be at risk for a number of vaccine preventable illnesses.

You should consult a health care provider or visit a travel health clinic preferably six weeks before you travel. This is an opportunity to:

  • review your immunization history
  • make sure your provincial/territorial vaccination schedule is up-to-date
  • discuss any trip-related health concerns you may have
  • assess your needs based on where you plan to travel and what you plan to do

You may need additional vaccinations depending on your age, planned travel activities and local conditions. Preventing disease through vaccination is a lifelong process.

Use the reference below to determine which vaccinations may be recommended or required for your destination.

Vaccination recommendations by destination

Yellow fever vaccination.

Some countries require proof that you have received a yellow fever vaccination before allowing you to enter the country. Consult an embassy or consulate of your destination country in Canada for up-to-date information on its entry and exit requirements before you travel abroad.

Other countries may require you to have been vaccinated for yellow fever if you have passed through an area where yellow fever may occur .

Proof of vaccination must be documented on an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis . You must carry the original certificate with you.

In Canada, the vaccination is only given at designated yellow fever vaccination centres .

Where and what you'll need to prove vaccination in Ottawa as the passport takes effect

Anyone 12 and older now needs a vaccine passport to access many non-essential venues in the province.

where to get travel vaccines ottawa

Social Sharing

It's time to tuck your printed proof of vaccination in your wallet or save it on your phone, as Ontario's vaccine passport goes into effect on Wednesday.

In preparation, the City of Ottawa released a list of where it will require people to show proof of vaccination and identification.

The list includes all indoor fitness activities from lane swims, to gym drop-ins to adult sports. This also applies to private clubs and gyms.

An exception exists for children under the age of 18 entering a facility for the sole purpose of attending an organized sport — however if an adult wants to accompany them, the adult must be vaccinated.

Youth, ages 12 to 17, will need to show proof of vaccination to attend events as spectators or use the facilities in a drop-in capacity.

where to get travel vaccines ottawa

You must be vaccinated to attend all theatre, cooking and art activities; this includes activities in rented city-owned spaces.

  • Ontario's vaccine passport: What you need to know

The City also reminded residents to budget a few extra minutes for staff to verify vaccination status before activities.

This will be good practice at all establishments that need to see passports, such as cinemas, restaurants with indoor dining and concert venues. Here's a full list of where the passport applies.

Passport not required at most public services

Of note, some museums, art galleries and libraries will not need to see a vaccine passport.

The Canadian Museum of Nature and the Canadian War Museum have said though that visitors will be required to show proof of vaccination to eat in their indoor dining areas — but only there.

Exhibitions and the museums' common areas will continue to be accessible to all.

Most public services will also continue as before. For example, you won't need to show your passport on public transit or at Service Ottawa centres. Nor will you at employment and social services offices or in Provincial Offence Act court.

What you'll need to show

As of Sept. 22 anyone 12 and older will be required to show proof of vaccination to enter non-essential spaces across the province. Though there will be allowances for quick trips into some buildings to use the washroom, grab a take-out order or pay a bill with the City of Ottawa.

To gain access, you'll need valid ID, such as a driver's licence, health card, passport or birth certificate and proof of vaccination.

For Ontario residents that proof can be downloaded here  from the Ontario government's website.

where to get travel vaccines ottawa

Ontario's digital passport system is expected in a month. People who've been vaccinated will be able to download a QR code to their phone, which can be read by a free smartphone app to be made available ahead of the Oct. 22 start date.

Travel Medicine

What you need to know about travel medicine, routine immunizations.

Are you up to date on your routine immunizations? Beyond the standard childhood vaccinations, there are many vaccines that are recommended for adults as well. Speak with your physician to ensure that you are up to date on all of your routine immunizations, including:

Tetanus/diphtheria Pertussis Influenza (flu) Measles/mumps/rubella Polio Pneumococcal (pneumonia) Herpes Zoster (shingles) Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

Recommended Immunizations

There are many vaccine-preventable diseases that can be encountered while travelling abroad. Based on your destination, planned activities, and length of stay, your physician will determine which vaccines are right for you.

Hepatitis A and/or B Typhoid Fever Meningococcal (Meningitis) Cholera/Traveler’s Diarrhoea Japanese Encephalitis Rabies

Required Immunizations

There are some areas of the world where you must provide proof of vaccination or prophylaxis before being allowed to cross international borders. These may include:

Yellow Fever Quadravalent Meningococcal (Meningitis) Polio

Malaria Prophylaxis

Malaria is endemic in many parts of the world and causes approximately 1 million deaths annually. Malaria prevention combines personal protective measures and medications. Personal protection includes measures such as clothing consisting of pants and long-sleeved shirts, and bed nets to prevent mosquito bites. If malaria medications are needed, your doctor will provide you with a prescription that can be filled at the pharmacy prior to your trip.

Food and Water Precautions

Traveler’s Diarrhea is one of the most common illnesses experienced by those travelling outside of Canada. Contaminated food or water is the most common source of this illness, and proper precautions play a large role in keeping you healthy during your trip.

Tap water should be avoided. Drinks from cans or bottles, and hot drinks such as tea are usually safe options for drinking.

Fruits and vegetables should be washed in a clean water source, and/or peeled prior to eating. Leafy vegetables such as lettuce should be avoided, as they are harder to clean.

Meat should be well cooked, and any food brought to the table should still be hot from cooking. Shellfish is one of the most common sources of illness, and should be avoided.

High Altitude Travel

Altitude sickness may be a concern for people travelling to areas that are 2,500m above sea level or higher, if they do not have time to acclimate (adjust) to their new environment. Medications are available to treat altitude sickness and should be discussed with your physician if you are travelling at high altitudes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are travel medicine consultations covered by ohip.

Travel outside of Canada is considered voluntary, and as such, is not covered by your publicly funded health insurance. If you have private insurance, we recommend that you submit your receipts to be assessed for reimbursement. Coverage will depend on your individual policy .

How much does it cost?

Travel medicine service fees vary depending on the number of patients seen (individual versus family) and also vary per vaccine type. Visit our Patient Resources page to view the full list of Travel Medicine Services prices.

Do I need a referral?

No. If you are planning on travelling outside of Canada, you should be assessed by a physician, no referral is necessary. You can book an appointment through your Patient Portal , over the phone , or in person at one of our locations.

I take prescription medications, are there any special procedures I should follow?

If you take any prescription medications, they should be carried with you during your travels in the original pharmacy-dispensed container, with your full name as it appears on your passport. Always bring an extra supply of your medication, in case of unexpected delays. If you require needles to administer your medication, you should carry a medical certificate from the prescribing physician documenting your need for syringes.

What happens if I get sick or injured during my trip?

All travelers outside of Canada are advised to obtain Travel Health Insurance prior to their trip. Medical care abroad can be extremely expensive, and the cost is the sole responsibility of the traveler, even if your provincial insurance plan agrees to reimburse you at a later date. The Canadian Embassy may be able to help you find medical care, but they will not cover any of the costs incurred.

What should I do if I feel ill after my trip?

Seek medical attention immediately. A fever, or any other symptoms of illness after a trip can be a medical emergency. Tell your physician immediately that you have traveled abroad, where you went, and how long you were there.

If I have completed a Travel Health Assessment and received the required vaccines and medications, can I still get sick?

While we do our best to protect you before your trip, not every illness can be prevented through vaccination or medications. During your Travel Medicine consultation, your Appletree doctor will provide you with a booklet called “Well on Your Way”. Review the guidelines included in this document for more information on personal protection measures to keep you safe and healthy during your trip.

Will I experience any side effects from the vaccines that I received today?

Most travel vaccines are generally well tolerated. Common side effects may include redness and soreness at the site of the injection. If a more serious reaction occurs, you should seek medical attention and report the reaction to the clinic.

Do I need to restrict my activity or diet after being vaccinated?

Not at all. Feel free to complete any planned activities.

I missed my appointment for my booster shot, do I need to start the series over?

While it is best to follow the schedule outlined during your consultation, a missed booster will not require that the series be started over. Call and re-book your vaccination appointment as soon as you can, and the series will continue from there.

How long are the vaccines good for?

The efficacy of each vaccine is different. Some are only good for 3 months, and some are good for your lifetime after completing the vaccination series. We recommend that you come in for a Travel Health Assessment prior to each trip, so that our trained staff and physicians can ensure that you are up to date.

OPH says this year's respiratory virus season is expected to be "atypical" when compared to pre-pandemic years.

OPH data show that before the pandemic, rates of influenza generally start to increase in December and January, but in the last three years, cases have begun to climb in November, on average. COVID-19 case counts are below where they were at this time last year, but the testing positivity rate is above the three-year average. The testing positivity rate for RSV exceeded the three-year average last week. Like the flu, RSV used to spike in December and January, but is apparently arriving earlier.

Parents in Ottawa say they're already dealing with it.

"Definitely got hit the past few weeks so both of the kids were sick," said Ottawa resident Alex Cairns. "Parents are sick, trying to take care of the sick kids, and trying to stay on top of work and the household is really challenging."

According to the latest data from OPH, wastewater surveillance indicates that COVID-19 levels are very high and increasing since last week. The level of influenza is low and similar to last week. There are moderate levels of RSV. The testing positivity rate for COVID-19 was 12 per cent. It was less than 2 per cent for influenza and 9 per cent for RSV.

U.S. issues travel warning for Israel with Iran attack believed to be imminent and fear Gaza war could spread

By Debora Patta , Tucker Reals

Updated on: April 13, 2024 / 5:25 PM EDT / CBS News

Update: Iran launched drone attacks against Israel on Saturday. Read CBS News'  latest coverage here .

Tel Aviv  — Israel is bracing for a worst-case scenario that U.S. officials believe could materialize within just hours — the possibility of a direct attack on Israeli soil by Iran in retaliation for a strike almost two weeks ago that killed seven Iranian military officers. Iran has vowed to take revenge for Israel killing its commanders, who were hit by an April 1 strike on the Iranian embassy in Syria's capital.

Two U.S. officials told CBS News that a major Iranian attack against Israel was expected as soon as Friday, possibly to include more than 100 drones and dozens of missiles aimed at military targets inside the country. Sources have told CBS News the retaliation could include attacks carried out both by Iranian forces, and proxy groups around the region that it has been funneling additional arms to for weeks.

The officials said it would be challenging for the Israelis to defend against an attack of that magnitude, and while they held out the possibility that the Iranians could opt for a smaller-scale attack to avoid a dramatic escalation, their retaliation was believed to be imminent.

Asked Friday how imminent he believes an attack is, President Biden responded, "I don't want to get into secure information, but my expectation is sooner than later." The president urged Iran not to move forward, saying his message to Tehran was: "Don't."

Tehran has not indicated publicly how or when it will return fire, so it's unclear how far Iran's leaders will go. If they decide to carry out a direct attack on Israel, there's fear it could blow Israel's ongoing war against Iranian ally Hamas up into a much wider regional conflict.

With the Iranian retaliation expected at any time, the U.S. State Department on Thursday warned Americans in Israel not to travel outside major cities, which are better protected from incoming rocket fire by the country's Iron Dome missile defense system. The latest guidance noted that travel by U.S. government employees in Israel could be further restricted with little notice as things develop in the tinderbox region.

"Whoever harms us, we will harm them," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Thursday as he visited troops at an Israel Defense Forces airbase. "We are prepared … both defensively and offensively."

Iran-Burning Flags Of The U.S. And Israel

On Saturday, all U.S. embassies in the Middle East were put on high alert and required to hold emergency action committee meetings. Diplomats in Lebanon and Israel were specifically told not to travel to certain areas within those countries.

Sima Shine, a security expert and former official with Israel's national intelligence agency Mossad, told CBS News it was a dangerous moment for the region, and the "most worried" she has been. She said anxiety over an all-out war was likely just as high "on both sides, in Israel and in Iran."

If Iran does choose to strike Israel directly, it could involve a complex missile and drone attack similar to the one Iranian forces launched against a Saudi oil facility in 2019 .

"They will try to do it on the military or some military asset," Shine predicted. "But the question will be the damage. If there would be many injured people, killed or injured … I think it has the potential for a huge escalation."

Iran- International Jerusalem Day Rally In Tehran

Shine stressed, however, that she still believes neither side actually wants a regional conflict.

U.S. "really trying to avoid war"

The U.S. sent a senior general to Israel this week to coordinate with the close American ally on any response it might make to an Iranian attack. Speaking Friday on "CBS Mornings," America's top military officer said, "we're really trying to avoid war."

"This is part of the dialogue that I have with my counterparts within the region, to include the Israeli chief of defense, who I talked to yesterday," said Joint Chiefs chairman Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr., adding that the U.S. military was "doing things not only to prevent a war, but at the same time, one of my primary things is to make sure all the forces in the region are protected."

"My role, as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs, is to plan and prepare," Brown said. "That's one thing we do very well."

Brown's Israeli counterpart, Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, "completed a comprehensive situational assessment on the readiness of the IDF for all scenarios," Israel's military said Friday.

"The IDF is very strongly prepared, both offensively and defensively, against any threat," Halevi was quoted as saying in the statement. "The IDF continues to monitor closely what is happening in Iran and different arenas, constantly preparing to deal with existing and potential threats in coordination with the United States Armed Forces."

The IDF said the visiting U.S. general, Central Command chief Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, was taking part in the IDF's situational assessment.

The dilemma for Iran, said Israeli expert Shine, is to figure out how to deliver its promised response to Israel's attack in Syria, but in a way that does not lead to further escalation. Likewise, Shine said Israel could choose to show restraint when it responds to whatever Iran eventually does.

If either side gets the balance wrong, the consequences for the region, and even the world, could be dire.
