Bridge on the River Kwai Excursion

Visit the bridge on the river kwai and the war cemetary in kanchanaburi.

One of the more popular day excursions from Hua Hin is to visit the bridge on the river Kwai to remember those that gave their lives to build the Thailand-Burma railway during the second World War while under Japanese control.

Popularized by such movies as the “The Bridge on the River Kwai” and “The Railway Man” this historic site is located in one of the most beautiful parts of Thailand.

The History

Although the construction of a railway between Burma and Thailand was considered as early as 1885 the route was considered to difficult and inhospitable to make it work.

When the Japanese invaded Burma during World War II they wanted to provide an alternate route to bring supplies into the country rather than the existing sea route which was considered too susceptible to attack. Construction of the railway line commenced in 1942 employing forced labor to complete the 415 km track.

Although the exact numbers are not known of the approximate 240,000 prisoners used to build the line around 90,000 are estimated to have lost their lives under brutal conditions.

The railway was completed very quickly and was opened on 17 October 1943.

There are over 600 bridges along the length of the track but the most famous one is bridge 277 which is the one depicted in the movie. The bridge actually passes over the Mae Klong river and in fact two bridges were built. First completed was a wooden bridge that opened in February 1943 and the second, a steel and concrete bridge, opened in June of the same year.

Both bridges were bombed in February 1945 but both were reopened briefly in May after repairs had been made. In June they were bombed again and remained out of action for the rest of the war. The steel and concrete bridge has since been rebuilt.

Many of the Allied prisoners of war are buried at the nearby Kanchanaburi War Cemetery

Planning your Excursion

There are many companies that run day trips out of Hua Hin to see the Bridge on the River Kwai and it is probably best to inquire at your hotel to make a booking.

Many day trippers combine this excursion with a trip to the Tiger Temple which is located close by.

We will take a long ride west of Bangkok to Kanchanaburi. We go to see the Buddha inside Krasae cave which was used as a camp site for war prisoners and then we take a short walk on the wooden railway bridge to catch a view of the river and the mountain.  We then reach the furthest point of the tour, Hellfire Pass, the long drive of more than 3 hours is worth it.  This is the most impressive war memorial in Kanchanaburi province.  The railway cutting, famed for its cost in life, is part of the 'Death Railway' that was constructed during World War II by war prisoners.  The memorial is well maintained and the museum is very informative.  A walk through the pass reminds us of the harsh and cruel conditions the prisoners of war had gone through. It is said that for every railway sleeper, one life was lost.

We stop for lunch at a nice riverside resort.

Then, we visit Kanchanaburi's most popular attraction: the famous Bridge over the River Kwai.  We take a speed boat ride to enjoy the views of both the bridge and the Kwai river.

The trip's final stop is Don Rak War Cemetery to remember those who lost their lives during World War II, the cemetery contains the remains of 6,982 allied war prisoners who perished during the construction of the ‘Death Railway’.

Natalie M – June 9, 2023

Thankyou for our magnificent tour. If I could give 6 stars I would. Our host could not have given us more information , food and choice if she tried. She knew all the good local tips, how to navigate the tour for best experiences and clearly loves her job. Dot hesitate to book with BKK tours. Transport was also safe , easy and the driver was so eager to provide clean , EXTREMELY comfortable and we were showered with cool face towels and cold drinks . Well done BKK tours.

Chris W – December 30, 2022

Both Air & driver very friendly & knowledgable. Very fun. Sites were fantastic & very moving. Excellent service from start to finish.

JC – December 25, 2022

We enjoyed this tour very much. It was very moving. It is always good to take a step back in time, learn from the past, and appreciate the now. The Hellfire Pass memorial is beautifully done and a fitting tribute. Air is an outstanding guide, and our driver was the best. The van is very comfortable for the long ride. Air even accommodated a request for an extra stop I had asked about beforehand. Top notch service. We will absolutely use BKK on future tours and recommend them to all our friends.

Sonic – December 2, 2022

Air is very patient, nice and knowlegable. She took care of each and everyone of us throughout the whole tour. Thank you so much. Definetly will book another tour with BKK tours. Highly recommended.

Julie H – November 9, 2022

A friend of ours lives in Bangkok and booked the Highlights of Bangkok tour for us. The tour was a great introduction to an intriguing city. Our tour guide Raht was excellent! Funny, knowledge and attentive to making sure we saw everything we wished to see. Mr A our driver was excellent. We enjoyed their company so much we booked another tour for the next day to visit the Bridge on the River Kwai. Big thank you to Raht and Mr A our driver, great job.

Gonz – February 25, 2020

The tour was very informative and emotional and exceeded my expectations. Mrs Raht was a great guide. Highly recommended.

Rayman104 – February 17, 2020

Air and Dorm were a credit to your company. Both made us welcome and Air was very informative and told little story’s that highlighted what her point was. Food at lunch time was in a tranquillity setting. Meal was excellent and best we have had in Thailand since arriving. Air was a very happy person and would give information through out the whole tour.

Phil and Sarah – January 13, 2020

A brilliant and interesting day out. The car journey was very comfortable. The car was spacious air conditioned and the driver gave us refreshing cold water and towels. Air also made sure we had plenty of snacks for the journey and gave us plenty of interesting information on the way and lunch was superb. Hellfire Pass was moving, scenic and the museum was very informative. We also went to a beautiful spot on the railway line which we were able to walk along and we found a family name in the war cemetery. An excellent and memorable day. Would def recommend this tour.

Jennifer M – January 3, 2020

Excellent tour. Professional and helpful. Ms. Raht was informative and patient with our group. Best tour we booked in Thailand during our stay.

Brian R – December 17, 2019

After extensive research online and looking at reviews on BKK Tours we were not disappointed.

Good communications from Michiel via email made the booking process very easy.

On the day our guide, Air and the van driver were on time and throughout the whole day Air was friendly, very good English and was very well informed on the locations we visited.

Our journey took us to Hellfire Pass, Bridge River Kwai, Jeath Museum and other locations. It is a long day and the drive out to Hellfire Pass takes at least 2.5 hours depending on traffic.

Hellfire Pass and the museum does give insight to what took place there on the Death Railway and you can still see the the remains of the original railway like the teak sleepers, drill holes in the rocks for blasting etc, seeing how the prisoners of war and the locals were treated and how the poor their living conditions were was a rather sobering experience.

Trip included a long boat ride up the Kwai Rover for about 15 minutes which was rather good.

Overall we were so glad we choose BKK Tours and would certainly recommend them as a tour guide/company.

Virginia – November 27, 2019

We thoroughly enjoyed our day with Air. All the visits were timed well and very thorough. We really enjoyed our delicious lunch as well. Thank you.

Mike – November 23, 2019

Great guide and very nice tour full of things to see. Raht my guide knew her stuff and was very helpful. Plenty of water and snacks during day plus a very nice lunch along the river. Ended day with boat ride. Good transport with WiFi and Airco. A very nice day well worth the money would certainly do another tour with BKK Tours. Thank you Raht.

John B – November 6, 2019

“Air” did a phenomenal job as our guide. Answered a wide variety of questions. Very accommodating to all our needs. Highly recommend her! Driver by the way did a tremendous job with the Bangkok traffic.

Peter T – October 9, 2019

From the moment we met Air we knew we were in for a fantastic day. Air made our day so enjoyable and ensured we saw the most of everything. She was very informative and a real pleasure to have with us. From start to finish our tour was fabulous and we were shown all the sites mentioned in the web site. We had ample time at Hell Fire Pass and the lunch was delicious. Our guide made sure we enjoyed the tour the whole time. Absolutely loved this tour and would recommend it to all.

Lori (Perth) – October 4, 2019

Our guide was calm and knowledgeable. Raht did not bombard us with too many facts and figures, but she knew what we wanted to know about places when we asked her. Terrific for our group of 8 adults from Australia. Recommend this tour and the company BKK. Very good communication. Oh and must mention the driver was excellent and his BEST activity was giving out icy cold towels each time we returned to the most comfortable van ever. Plus we were given lots of cold bottles of water. Also of note was the delicious Thai meal served near River Kwai Bridge.

Sharron – September 2, 2019

From start to finish it was an amazing experience. Nothing was too much trouble for our guide Air and driver Don. Would not hesitate to recommend to others. The whole day was excellent, however lunch was outstanding, good company and beautiful location.

Lizm – June 20, 2019

This trip was fabulous – would recommend this company highly. I have been to the River Kwai before but this was far more comprehensive and the service was great. Petch was fabulous, very knowledgeable and great company. She was interested and keen to help. One of the best guides we have had.

Pete Morris – June 5, 2019

A great tour. Very comprehensive and informative. Although we covered a lot of ground in 12 hours we never felt rushed. Excellent guide and driver and vehicle. Can not speak highly enough of Air. Very informative, easy to talk to, easy to understand. Willing to share so much knowledge. We had fun as well.

Sandra C – June 3, 2019

Tour with Air was all we hoped for. New Interpretive Centre at Hellfire Pass is very well done together with the walk to the Khwae Noi Valley Lookout and going through Konyu Cutting alone was quite an emotional experience. We didn’t feel rushed at all and the delicious lunch, Mr Dorn’s van and Air’s lovely, fun personality made for a great day. Booking process and all communication with Michiel was first class.

Hermie – June 1, 2019

A great experience. We could not fault both our guide and driver who were professional, friendly and great company for the day. Being Australian this was an important day for giving us the opportunity to visit and pay homage to the many allied soldiers who worked and perished on construction of the railway. We would make special mention of Ms Petch’s obvious genuine respect for the Australians and other allied soldiers.

Bridge over the River Kwai, Kanchanaburi, Thailand

River Kwai Bridge Kanchanaburi Thailand

Kanchanaburi , in Myanmar border, is home to the famous Bridge River Kwai. During WW II, Japan constructed the meter-gauge railway line from Ban Pong, Thailand to Thanbyuzayat, Burma. The line passing through the scenic Three Pagodas Pass runs for 250 miles. This is now known as the Death Railway.

The railway line was meant to transport cargo daily to India, to back up their planned attack on India. The construction was done using POWs and Asian slave laborers in unfavorable conditions. The work started in October 1942 was completed in a year. Due to the difficult terrain, thousands of laborers lost their lives. It is believed that one life was lost for each sleeper laid in the track.

At the nearby Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, around 7,000 POWs, who sacrificed their lives in the railway construction, are buried. Another 2,000 are laid to rest at the Chungkai Cemetery.

War Cemetery Kanchanaburi Thailand

Allied Forces bombed the iron bridge in 1944. Three sections of Bridge River Kwai were destroyed. The present bridge has two of its central spans rebuilt. The original parts of the bridge are now displayed in the War Museum.

The Bridge River Kwai became famous all over the world, when it was featured in movies and books. The cliff-hugging tracks and the natural beauty of the surrounding mountains and valleys are well captured in the David Lean movie.

Bridge River Kwai is a tourist destination now. The track is developed into a walkway with side platforms. This allows crossing the railway bridge on foot. These platforms are useful as viewpoints and for avoiding trains. A small tourist train runs back and forth across the bridge.

Every year, River Kwai Bridge Festival is organized to mark the Allied bombing on November 28, 1944. Spectacular light and sound show is the highlight of the festival.
