Mount Bromo Sunrise In Indonesia: Volcano Crater Guide

The Mount Bromo sunrise and volcano tour in Indonesia is easily one of the most amazing travel experiences you can have anywhere in the world.

Climbing the Mount Bromo crater in Java isn’t very hard and you get to look directly into a smoking volcano, complete with the nasty sulfur smell!

The first time we visited Mount Bromo in Indonesia, we did an independent road trip through East Java that included Mt Bromo and the Kawah Ijen crater, along with some epic waterfalls, before ending in Bali.

Our most recent visit was a bit different because we used a Mount Bromo tour package . This time we booked a one day tour from Surabaya to Mount Bromo, complete with a jeep ride around the volcano. We liked this even better.

Whether you use a tour package or not, the Mount Bromo volcano is a ‘bucket list’ item you shouldn’t miss on your journey through Asia, and you can even travel from Bali to Mount Bromo without much hassle.

This travel guide will explain how to go to Mount Bromo, where to stay, entrance fees, how to be safe, and everything else you need to know before you go!

Where Is Bromo?

Mount Bromo is an active volcano crater located in East Java, Indonesia.

It’s located between the cities of Malang, Surabaya, and Probolinggo, and you can visit it from any of those places.

The Bromo mountain is part of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, where you can see a famous cluster of 5 volcanoes (including Bromo), and Java’s highest mountain Semeru puffing out smoke in the background.

Needless to say, these volcanoes are an incredible sight!

How To Visit Mount Bromo

The easiest way to visit Bromo is to fly to Malang or Surabaya, and then book a day tour or a multi-day trip from there. If you’re in Bali, you can also do it in the opposite direction, starting overland from Bali and then ending at Malang or Surabaya.

Bali has direct flights to and from Malang (MLG) and Surabaya (SUB) every day, and a one way ticket can be as cheap as 600k Rupiah ($40 USD). You can shop for flights to Malang or Surabaya at Skyscanner.

Once you arrive in Malang or Surabaya, it’s easy to book a day tour to Bromo or you can arrange everything yourself if you prefer. A full day tour is enough time to see all the highlights of the park.

We normally like to do things without a tour, but this is one case where I think the tour is definitely a good idea. Mt Bromo is a bucket list item and you want to do it justice.

A tour lets you do extra activities like Jeep riding around the volcano, and it really doesn’t cost a whole lot more when you total everything up, plus you don’t have to hassle with buses, etc.

Best Mount Bromo Tour Package

Here’s a top rated Mount Bromo day tour package with Klook starting from Surabaya or Malang.

You can book this as a private tour or shared tour, and it includes all of the highlights like the Mount Bromo sunrise, jeep ride in the sea of sand, optional horse ride, Mount Bromo crater hike at the volcano, and you can also add the Madakaripura Waterfall as a bonus to the itinerary.

If you’re wanting to do a multi-day trip, Klook has overland tours to Bromo and Ijen from Bali with guides, accommodation, and other expenses included. You can even add on a visit to the Tumpak Sewu waterfall .

We’ve used Klook for lots of tours and activities around the world, and they’re great. Highly recommended!

Where To Stay

In East Java you have the option of basing yourself in Surabaya, Malang, Probolinggo, or Mount Bromo itself ( Cemoro Lawang village ).

Surabaya has the most comfy hotels since it’s a major city in Indonesia, and Malang has some great options too. Probolinggo is smaller, but also has a few good hotel options .

Here are some of our top hotel recommendations below for the city of Surabaya, which is where we stayed on our last trip to Mount Bromo.

Staying At Bromo

If you want to stay really close to the action, there are some Bromo hotels at Cemoro Lawang village but they tend to be pretty basic, and a bit overpriced for what you get.

Cemoro Lawang is generally not a fun place to stay because it’s very undeveloped and hasn’t caught up to mass tourism at Bromo yet. That may change someday, but for now, most of the budget friendly hotel options at Cemoro Lawang are really rough.

Our top recommendations there would be Cahyo Homestay Bromo , Good Karma Guesthouse , or Guesthouse Gunung Bromo . Again, don’t expect luxury.

You can see the highlights of Mount Bromo in one full day tour, so it’s not really necessary to stay there longer unless you’re a serious photographer or just want more time exploring the area.

Best Things To Do At Mount Bromo

• mount bromo sunrise.

First things first — witness the famous Mount Bromo sunrise from above the volcanoes!

Before you start exploring the Bromo mountain up close, you have to see the sunrise from the top of the caldera. Every Mount Bromo tour package starts like this, and for good reason.

It’s probably one of the best places in the world to watch the sunrise. The colors are amazing, and on a clear day you can see all the way to Mount Argopuro in the east.

Mount Bromo Sunrise

• Mount Bromo Volcanoes Viewpoint

The viewpoints on the north side of the caldera are where you can get those iconic pics of the Bromo volcano cluster.

Your main options are Seruni Point , King Kong Hill , Bukit Perahu , Bukit Cinta , or the highest viewpoint Penanjakan . You can click each of these links for map coordinates.

To be honest, there is very little difference between these viewpoints and the only reason so many of them exist is to help space out the crowds at Bromo, which can be pretty crazy (especially on weekends).

In other words, don’t worry about which viewpoint you go to — they’re all amazing, so just enjoy the epic scenery! Photography here in the early morning is ideal because you’ll get nice shadows and atmospheric fog around the Bromo mountain complex.

• Sea of Sand

After sunrise, the next stop is the ‘sea of sand’ at the bottom of the caldera. The locals call it Lautan Pasir, which means the same thing in Bahasa Indonesia.

This is a really neat place and you’ll need to pass through it anyway to reach the Bromo crater. You can explore the sea of sand by Jeep, horse, or motorbike.

It’s a perfect photo spot with the steep ridges of the Mount Widodaren volcano in the background.

• Mount Bromo Crater Hike

Possibly the most amazing thing to do at the Bromo mountain complex is the hike to the top of the smoking volcano crater.

The full hike to the top of the Mount Bromo crater (starting from the sea of sand) takes about 1 hour, although you can speed it up if you ride a horse partway.

The last part of the hike has to be done on foot, and it’s a short but steep climb up a concrete stairway to the top of the crater. It’s not too hard for non-hikers, and even kids can do it.

Be careful at the top because there’s not much of a safety railing, and on a windy day it has nasty sulfur fumes that are hard to breathe. Generally you can’t see red lava here, but you can peek right into the smoking crater of the active volcano!

Is The Volcano Safe?

Mount Bromo is generally safe to visit, but it’s a good idea to check the current status before you make plans, otherwise you may not get the full experience if part of the park is closed.

There were eruptions in 2010, 2015, and 2019. Usually no one is hurt, and you can still get some great views from a distance, but at the very least they may close access to the Mount Bromo crater hike , because during a 2004 eruption two tourists were killed by flying rocks there.

Nowadays, the area is closely monitored and they have earthquake detectors underground to anticipate any volcanic activity from Bromo.

No one has been hurt by the volcano in almost 20 years, and it gets close to 1 million visitors per year, so overall the safety record is pretty good.

Mount Bromo Entrance Fee

  • Weekdays: 220k IDR (~$15 USD) / person / day
  • Weekends: 320k IDR (~$21 USD) / person / day

These Mount Bromo entrance fees are current as of 2024.

It’s a bit pricey by Indonesian standards, and I wish they would at least make the tickets last longer (like 3 days) so you could get more bang for your buck.

Weather / Climate — How Cold Is Bromo?

Even though this is Indonesia, Mount Bromo and Cemoro Lawang can be pretty chilly before sunrise since they’re 2,329 meters (7,641 ft) above sea level, and the sunrise viewpoints are even higher!

The elevation at the Penanjakan viewpoint is a whopping 2,770 meters (9,088 ft). For Indonesia that’s unusually high.

Temperatures can drop below 7 Celsius (45 F), and that doesn’t even factor in wind chill. It can get incredibly windy on the mountain peaks, and dry season is cooler than rainy season.

However, you’ll only be chilly before sunrise. After that it warms up pretty quick, and the sun at this elevation is plenty strong.

If you’re too cold at Mt.Bromo while waiting for sunrise, you can also rent a jacket at your hotel, or rent a jacket from one of the many small local shops near the sunrise viewpoints.

What To Bring

  • Jacket: This is essential for sunrise because it can be very chilly. After sunrise, you’ll want to shed the jacket.
  • Footwear: Regular shoes are fine, but sturdy hiking shoes are better for the Mount Bromo hike. If you go to the crater, you’ll be walking on slippery gravel and steep inclines or declines at times.
  • Sunglasses: Can be good to protect your eyes from sandstorms in the sea of sand.
  • Poncho: If you visit Mount Bromo during the rainy season in Indonesia (especially December to February), you might want to bring a rain jacket just in case.
  • Snacks: Even though most Mount Bromo tours include free breakfast, it’s skimpy and you’ll probably be wanting energy snacks to go with it.
  • Headlight: This is useful for hiking before sunrise, especially if you plan to do the Mt Bromo hike without a tour guide.
  • Camera: Mandatory! A small tripod could be handy too since it’ll be dark before the Mount Bromo sunrise.
  • Drone: So far, there aren’t any rules against flying a drone at the Mt Bromo volcano, although I wouldn’t recommend doing it at the sunrise point since it’s so crowded. Once you go down to the Sea of Sand, there’s a lot of wide open space to fly without bothering people.

Best Month To Visit

There’s not really a best month to visit Mount Bromo, although any time in the dry season is definitely ideal.

Indonesia’s dry season runs from April to November, and during this time there’s less rain and the mountain visibility is best. This applies to East Java too.

You can still visit Mount Bromo during the rainy season in East Java (December to March), but if it’s cloudy you may miss the sunrise and the iconic view of the volcanoes, so it’s not ideal.

With that said, both of the times we went to Bromo were technically on the tail end of the rainy season, and we still had perfect weather, so don’t write it off completely.

In general, it’s hard to avoid the crowds at Mount Bromo because this place has become a bucket list item for so many people. Definitely try to avoid weekends and public holidays, because the park can get especially crowded during those times.

If you want to see an active volcano in Indonesia without any crowds, check out Mount Dukono in North Maluku. This one is more remote than Bromo and requires a harder hike to reach, but it’s spectacular and you might have it all to yourself!

Is Mount Bromo Open / Closed?

Yes, Mount Bromo is currently open for tourists as of 2024! I’ll update this travel guide if anything changes.

The mountain is rarely closed to the public, and that would only happen temporarily if there’s some kind of special ceremony, or if there’s unusual volcanic activity or other safety concerns.

Mount Bromo will be briefly closed for Wulan Kapitu (January 9-10, 2024), Silent Day (March 11-12, 2024), and Yadnya Kasada (July 6-7, 2024), and again for Wulan Kapitu (December dates TBA, 2024).

You can also check on status updates for all of Indonesia’s volcanoes at Magma Indonesia .

Happy travels!

More Things To See Near Bromo

There are lots of good things to see and do near Mount Bromo in East Java, Indonesia, including the spectacular Tumpak Sewu Waterfall and a bunch of other nice waterfalls near Malang and Probolinggo.

After visiting Mt Bromo, most travelers head on to Kawah Ijen , a spectacular crater lake on the eastern end of Java island.

You could even climb Mount Semeru, which is Java’s tallest mountain. It’s the volcano peak you see erupting in the distance behind the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.

Don’t forget to check out my 1-Week Java itinerary for more ideas of what to do in East Java and Central Java!

Mount Bromo vs Kawah Ijen: Which Is Better?

So which is better, Mount Bromo or Kawah Ijen ? And if you only have time to see one of them, which should it be? That’s not an easy question, actually.

In my opinion, Bromo has a more spectacular landscape, and you get to look into a smoking volcano crater. The hiking is also easier compared to Ijen, and it’s closer to a major airport (Surabaya), although the drive from town is longer.

On the other hand, Mount Ijen has the world’s biggest acid lake, with a spectacular turquoise color, and you can also see the ‘blue fire’ phenomenon if you go there at night. Ijen also has the advantage of being closer to Bali, and closer to a town (Banyuwangi).

Overall, it’s hard to choose between Mount Bromo vs Kawah Ijen. I lean toward Bromo as my favorite, but that’s just my opinion and I’m sure plenty of people would disagree with me. If you have time, definitely try to see both places in East Java!

Hi David. Hope you’re well. My name is Sujay, I’m from Mumbai, India – and I’ve been planning a trip to Bali and Java for the past few months to come hike a few volcanic mountains and shoot some videos for a personal art project. I’ve been reading your blog a lot and have really enjoyed the pics and details – very helpful. However, just 5 days before I was arrive in Bali, I heard the news that the Bali government, just last week, has banned entry to ALL mountains for tourists and locals alike. I was wondering if you know anything about this – is the ban in effect and super strict? Or are there guides still taking tourists on hikes?

The ban is specifically for the province of Bali and whatever places comes under its jurisdiction – I think this includes east Java too. I wanted to know if trips to Mt. Bromo and Kawah Ijen are still happening or these sites are also banned from climbing?

Are there any other active/smoking volcanoes outside of the official Bali province which you’d recommend? I was also looking at visiting smoking lava fields, hot springs etc…

I’m already here in Bali, so it would be great if I hear back soon!

Thanks so very much. Looking forward, Sujay

' src=

Hi Sujay, thanks for your comment. I just replied on email. The Bali mountain ban being pushed by the governor is not in effect at the moment, and I think it’s very unlikely it will happen. In any case, it wouldn’t affect any of the mountains in Java, including Mount Bromo and Kawah Ijen. Good luck on your trip!

' src=

Could you please elaborate on: “and you can even travel from Bali to Mount Bromo without much hassle.” If we want to travel overland from Malang to Bali, what would be the best way to do so?

Hi Kelsey! We hired a private driver and did a road trip starting from Malang and ending in Bali. We saw a bunch of waterfalls near Malang, and then did Bromo and Ijen on the way to Bali. You can see some of our itinerary ideas here . If you want to simplify it, Klook has multi-day tours to Bromo and Ijen from Bali with guides, accommodation, and other expenses included. Before covid there were also direct flights from Bali to Malang (and vice versa), but right now the only flight options are Yogyakarta or Surabaya. Good luck! I’m happy to answer any questions.

Love the post, lots of great information please keep updated….

Hi David, my name is Paula and I be travelling to Surabaya over this weekend for a Bromo Crater hike. Heard this was an off limit activity since the fire. Wonder if this ban has been lifted and if there is anywhere online that I can check for this update? By the way, thanks so much for sharing your journeys and beautiful pictures.

Hi Paula! Thanks for your comment. Bromo officially re-opened for tourism yesterday (September 19). I haven’t heard if that includes the crater hike, but I would think it’s open as well. The fire is already extinguished. Good luck!

How to Arrange Your Bromo Tour (The Complete Guide)

' src=

The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park offers some of the most amazing landscapes in the whole of Indonesia. It is especially beautiful at sunrise as the mist rolls over the valley and the sun rises behind Bromo Volcano. However, arranging a Bromo Tour can be surprisingly difficult. It’s easy to get over charged, stay in the wrong place or make a silly mistake (like not bring a warm coat).

To help you arrange your Bromo trip I created this short guide. The guide covers everything you need to know to arrange a Bromo tour. The guide has been broken down into easy to navigate sections. You can click the link to jump directly to a certain part of the Bromo Tour Guide.

  • Where to Stay: Find Out More
  • Entrance Fee: Find Out More
  • Jeep Rental: Find Out More
  • Bromo Tour: Find Out More
  • Booking a Tour: Find Out More

Let’s get started.

Where to Stay

When you visit Bromo you can stay in one of the following three cities; Malang, Surabaya or Probolinggo. Surabaya is the furthest away from Bromo. It is a 90 minute car drive from Surabaya to Mt Bromo. Malang is a little closer. It is a 60 minute car drive from Malang to Mount Bromo. Probolinggo actually overlooks Mount Bromo.

The 3 Mount Bromo Tours

From surabaya: bromo midnight tour.

If you decide to book a hotel in Surabaya you will join the Bromo Midnight tour. The reason it’s called the Surabaya to Bromo midnight tour package is because you get picked up from your hotel at midnight. From Surabaya you will be driven directly to Bromo for sunrise.

From Malang: Bromo Sunrise Tour

The Bromo Sunrise Tour is for people who are staying in Malang (which is closer to Bromo). The driver of your car will pick you up from your hotel in Malang at 3:30am. It’s a one hour and forty minute to 2,5 hours from Malang to the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park at night. During the day it is around 3-3,5 hours journey. To actually visit Bromo you need to swap cars, because only members of the local community can drive the jeeps you need to take to visit the volcano.

From Probolinggo: Bromo Probolinggo Tour

The Bromo Probolinggo tour is the most convenient of the three options. The hotels in Problinggo actually overlook Mt Bromo volcano. If you are staying in Probolinggo then you have the option of either walking to the Penanjakan viewpoint or renting a jeep to take you there. It’s a 3 hour walk from Probolinggo to Penanjakan, which means that you will need to set off at approximately 1:00 am – 2:00 am to reach the viewpoint for sunrise (the walk is almost all uphill).

Visiting Savana Hill. It’s a beautiful green landscape in the wet season.

Mount Bromo Entrance Fee

There is an entrance fee to enter Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park. For Indonesians the price for entrance to the national park is at around Rp30,000 per person. For foreigners there are two price prices. On weekdays the price for the entrance ticket is at around Rp 240,000. On weekends and Indonesian public holidays the cost is at around Rp 340,000.

Jeep Rental

To take the Bromo tour you will need to arrange a jeep rental. There are two different tours you can choose from, the short tour and the long tour. On the short tour you will visit Penanjakan Viewpoint to watch sunrise and climb Mount Bromo Volcano, before returning to your hotel/ driver.

If you go on the long tour you will go to Savana Hill and Whispering Sands (Sea Sands). You can arrange a jeep rental on arrival in Bromo, but it is more convenient and cheaper to pre-book the jeep. All of the jeep rentals at Bromo are pretty much the same model. A Bromo jeep rental can fit up to five passengers. The price for a Bromo jeep rental changes according to the tourist season. See the table below for more information on jeep rental prices.

Mt Bromo Tour

If you take either the Bromo Mindnight or Bromo Sunrise tours you will need to change cars to a jeep to get to Penanjakan. If you are staying in the Bromo National Park area the jeep will pick you up at your hotel. Penanjakan does get really crowded for sunrise. There will be a big crowd. For the best experience visit on a weekday, because it’s not as packed and it’s also cheaper (it’s still quite busy though).

Whichever tour you take, the first place you will stop is Penanjakan viewpoint (or other viewpoints such as King Kong Hill, Cinta Hill, etc). This is where you will watch sunrise from (it’s where everybody takes those beautiful photos that Bromo is so famous for). There’s a perfect 15 minutes or so to take some amazing photos and then it’s over for another day. Those 15 minutes are worth waking up really early in the morning for.

Climbing Bromo

After sunrise the jeep will take you to Bromo crater. It is a 25-minute car drive from Penanjakan to the crater. The jeep will drop you off on the dusty valley floor. From there it’s a relaxing 30-minute walk to the crater. If you have children, or you just want to do something different, you can ride a horse to the crater.

It is an easy climb to the top of Bromo crater. On the final part of the climb there are concrete stairs dug into the side of the crater. From the top of Mount Bromo you can look inside the crater, which is normally smoking. Many locals throw offerings into the crater. The view from the top are really beautiful. If you are on the short tour the driver will take you back to your hotel after climbing Mt Bromo.

The rugged landscape of Whispering Sands.

The Long Bromo Jeep Tour

After you’ve climbed the volcano you will visit the Tengger Sea Sands and the Savanna Hill.  This part of the tour takes around an hour. During the tour you can ask the driver to stop so you can take some photos. The landscape is really impressive. At the Tengger Sand Sea you see the volcanic sand. This area is popular for people who do off road motocross.

In the Savannah area you are surrounded by an island of green (or brown-ish if it is dry season). The visit to these two places is a real chance to see the contrasts in the landscape of Mount Bromo. On the tour of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park you’re guaranteed to take beautiful photos that you’ll want to share with your family and friends.

Arranging a Bromo Tour

The Bromo tour is really special. The view of the sunrise is an unforgettable experience. You can probably understand why I tell all my friends they have to join this tour if they visit Surabaya or Malang or Probolinggo. To help you arrange a tour without the usual hassle I’ve partnered with some local independent drivers and we can take care everything.

Here’s What’s Included in the Package:

  • Pick up from your hotel or the train station/ airport
  • Transport in a comfortable car
  • Experienced local driver
  • Entrance costs for Bromo
  • Drop off at your hotel

FYI Bromo is an active volcano. We do monitor the volcanic activity at the crater. Sometimes people are not allowed to visit the crater when the authorities request the visitors to be 1-3 km away from the crater. You can still enjoy the amazing landscape of Bromo.

Great articles! Very inspiring. What is the best way to get from Yogyakarta to Surabaya or Probolinggo? We are leaving in one week to Indonesia 🙂 I’m very excited.

Kind regards, Ayla

Hi Ayla. Thanks for the kind feedback. I’d recommend taking the train from Yogyakarta to Surabaya or alternatively the plane. It really depends on your timetable and budget. If you haven’t done the train before I think it’s worth it though 🙂 Hope that helps.

Can you help me with the tour, i fly from Jog to Surabaya and from Suryabaya i intend to stay at Malang so i can avoid the midnight ride to Bromo, can you help me with best way to get to Malang frm Suryabaya airport. i would like you to help me stay and a tour for Bromo as well, from here i intend to flyout to Bali. appreciate your help

Though on the google maps you can go to Bromo through Wonokitri / Poncokusumo, but it is not the usual route. I personally never tried it. I always go through Probolinggo, this means it takes 3-4 hours drive from Malang to Bromo. From Surabaya to Bromo is 4-5 hours. The best way to travel from Surabaya to Malang is by rent a private car. If you don’t want to do anything in Malang, it is better to go straight from Surabaya to Bromo. When is your travel date? Please get in touch with us through email: [email protected] . Thank you.

Hye Firsta..ur article is very helpful for me to plan my trip to Bromo next April 2018. Im looking forward to experience milky way in Bromo..heard the view was awesome!! Can u give any tips on combining the milky way session with sunrise?will be reaching at Juanda Airport airport around 5:55p.m. Is the camping site at Bromo being recommended anyway?and if it yes, any suggestion on how to rent it for a night?

Hi Sue, I don’t have the experience of camping in Bromo so I don’t know if they have a campsite around the area. My suggestion is to stay overnight at Lava View Lodge, it is one of the best lodges in Bromo in regards to location. From in front of the lodge, you can see the Bromo volcano, Mount Batok, etc. The view is something like this (I took this shot). You can come out from the hotel around 10-11 pm or 1 AM to see the milky way. You can get some rest afterwards and start the sunrise tour with the jeep at 3:30 AM. Hope this helps. If you are interested in arranging the tour with us, complete the form closer to your travel date (1,5 months before is sufficient). Have a good day!

Thanks Firsta for your prompt reply.. the shot is so beautiful!!!

Thanks Sue!

Plan March 2019. Deciding go on weekday or weekend. From surabaya Town.

Hi Jerry, We have sent you an email. Look forward to hearing back from you. 🙂 Bromo is a very popular tourist destination in Indonesia so it is mostly busy. However usually weekday is better than weekend.

Firstly thank you so much for this very informative article.

I am traveling from Singapore, and wish to visit Bromo, Ijen, as well as head onward to Borobudur.

We are two young adults traveling with a 1 year old baby. Heard that Ijen is very sulfuric. Is it suitable for a young baby?

Is the best way to do this trip to book a tour before arriving in Indonesia? Or can I book a tour when I am there?

Dear J Choo,

We have sent a reply through email on Jan 28. Hope you receive it ok. Look forward to hearing back from you.

Hello, I am a KITAS holder and i really want to go to brom from surabaya. I have asked to a travel agent and they said I have to pay for bule price for this year (2019). I always have local price in Indonesia (borobudur, bali, komodo island). Is this thing true?

Hi Elizabeth, Sorry for the late reply. Yes, I think started from 2016 or 2017, you can’t get a local price with Kitas anymore.

Hey Firsta, my girlfriend and I have just arrived to an airbnb in Malang and we are looking for a genuine driver willing to take us to either one of these Bromo tours or to a bromo tour followed by Tumpak Sewu. Do you have anyone honest to recommend as most drivers start throwing the randomest numbers out there thinking that we “bule” produce money out of our ass ? And it’s definitely not the case. Please help ???

Hi Benjamin, Riri sent you an email a few days ago, but I think its probably too late. Hope you had a great time in Indonesia.

' src=

Dear Fiesta,

We are planning to do a 3d2n Bromo Ijen tour on 2nd of June. Any tips?

4-5 June is Idul Fitri, it is one of the biggest Muslim celebrations in Indonesia. Usually some destinations especially those in Java will be quite packed and the traffic will be generally bad. If you can, I recommend to change your travel date.

' src=

Dear Firsta, Looking to do the Bromo & Ijen tour 7th and 8th of May. I’m a single traveller on a tight budget. Could you please help me out? Thanks!

Dear Danique, Unfortunately we don’t have recommendation for a shared tour for Bromo and Ijen. We only run a private tour arrangement. Hope you can find something and have a great time in Indonesia.

Dear Firsta,,

Apa khabar, saya physically disabled (using elbow crutches). Is it possible for me to enjoy Mount Bromo trip ?

Hi Rosli, I think it should be fine. The journey to the crater will be challenging. You can take a horse, but you need to hike some stairs. Bromo is also nice to see from afar (from the viewpoint or several points around the sea sands and the savannah, which you don’t need to hike to reach). Take care!

Bromo and Ijen Tour: The Perfect 3-Day Route

Visiting the Bromo and Ijen crater is one of the popular reasons to visit Java in Indonesia. It is best to do this Bromo and Ijen tour via Malang. You can expect three days full of adventures and natural wonders. Driving across the wide-stretched sea of sand at Bromo, visiting the Coban Pelangi and Madakaripura waterfall, driving through Ngadas Village, the highest vegetable mountain area on Java.

Day 1 – Waterfall, Hill Farms & Savannah

The drive from Malang to Cemoro Lawang (Bromo village) is a beautiful two-hour drive with a 4×4 jeep. You will need a four-wheel-drive car since you will be climbing a lot towards Ngadas village. Just before entering the Ngadas region, you can visit the Coban Pelangi waterfall.

Mount Bromo is the most unique volcano in Indonesia's ring of fire

DOMINATED BY TENGGER TRIBES

The most recent caldera in Bromo-Tengger-Semeru Natioanl Park is the 9 × 10 km-wide volcanic ashen black sea of sand, which is surrounded by the towering cliffs of the crater edge. This caldera formed between 33,000 and 45,000 years ago. An overlapping cluster of postcaldera cones was constructed on the floor of the ‘Sandsea’ caldera within the past several thousand years. The youngest of these is the Bromo tuff cone. More than 50 mild-to-moderate explosive eruptions have occurred since 1804, as recorded in the Global Volcanic Network (GVN) data base.

Dream Big, Travel Far logo

What are you looking for?

Booking a mount bromo tour in 2024: what you need to know.

Cazzy Magennis

Ah, Bromo. The sunrise views here were the most epic I’ve seen in the world so far.

I can’t begin to describe the beauty.

It’s worth the early start.

Anyway ...I’m getting ahead of myself!

So, you’re thinking of visiting Bromo and going on a Bromo Tour. Well great!

Below I’m going to take you through everything you need to know about visiting Mount Bromo and our top travel tips , whether you opt for a DIY style tour or an organised one.

Brad and I did an organised tour and to be honest we never usually take tours, but decided we should have one for this, and it was the best tour I’ve done, plus it was private...more on that later.

First things first ...

Travellerspoint

What is Mount Bromo?

mount bromo sunrise

Mount Bromo is an active volcano in East Java located in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. It’s 2,329 in height which doesn’t make it the highest in the area, but certainly the most well known and iconic. If you’re looking to do a Bromo tour, then the chances are you’ve seen the amazing pictures, so you’ll know what you’re dealing with...but if not, then here you go…

How do you get to Mount Bromo?

Well this can be divided into a variety of sections depending on where you are coming from. But if you’re going on a Bromo tour, you’ll be taken on a custom keep that’s made for the conditions, or if you are doing your own DIY thing, you’ll probably have a moped, which isn’t safe...take it from someone who has had an accident.

Getting to Mount Bromo from Malang

This is where Brad and I went from on our Bromo tour and it was super easy. Our tour guide picked us up around 1am and it only took 1.5 hours to get to Bromo, so we had lots of spare time, but it was good to get a spot early, and also grab some drinks around the fire at night. We got to mingle with other travellers too.

If you DIY it you can rent a moped in Malang for around 80,000 but they might not want you to drive it on the sea of sand...more on that later.

Getting to Mount Bromo from Yogyakarta

You can’t do a sunrise tour from here. You’ll need to either get the train from Yogyakarta to Malang and do your Bromo tour from there. OR you can fly from Jogja to Malang too and the same idea as above.

Tour: Check out this tour that combines Mount Bromo and Ijen Crater

Getting to Mount Bromo from Surabaya

Mount Bromo is located 4 hours drive from Surabaya, this means if you’re heading in the morning for a sunrise tour, you’re going to have to leave late the night before. Whilst I have no doubts that people do probably do this, I think it’s worth trying to get to a closer town and going from there.

Tour: You can book a sunrise tour from Surabaya here

Getting to Mount Bromo from Probolinggo

This is the closest area to Mount Bromo if you decide to DIY your tour and go via your own moped. It’s about a 1.5 hour drive to the park from here. But again I warn you about the sand and be wary that you might have to “walk” your bike. We have seen quite a few people doing this and it will eat into your time.

Should you do a Bromo Tour or DIY it?

jeep at mount bromo

This is the big question, should you do a Bromo tour or do it yourself?

Okay, so when Brad and I do any sort of activity, we always like to do it ourselves without a tour guide as they tend to rip you off. But after I did some research into doing Bromo by yourself, I didn’t think it was worth it.

Basically when you are getting to Mount Bromo, you drive through a “sand of sea” that’s literally in pitch black and there are no directions to where you need to go. Hence the reason why only certain types of jeeps are allowed in the park.

Imagine a moped on sand, and think about what it will do, it will get stuck and it will skid and you will be at risk of coming off. I came off a moped due to skidding in gravel and had to get stitches in my knee. Yes sand isn’t gravel, I’m just indicating the danger.

If you’ve never rode a moped before then do NOT, I repeat do NOT ride it for the first time in sand. It would be the height of stupidity.

But if you’re confident enough to skid and perhaps falls and drive in the dark with no directions, then go ahead. When we drove by with our jeep, (which even got stuck in the sand at one point, btw), we have seen a few people on mopeds “walking” them because they kept getting stuck.

So, basically, I think it’s worth doing a tour. Group tours aren’t our thing either, so we opted for a private tour because it was only a couple of pounds extra. Some tour companies will charge you double for a private tour, but not our guy!

Other benefits of doing a Bromo tour is that your guide will know something about the area, can take cool pictures of the two of you (if you’re travelling as a couple like Brad and I), and even take you to some secret photo spots, which our guide did. Actually our guide LOVED taking travel photos . It felt like having a photographer with me through the day, which was awesome.

We also had breakfast included and actually Brad and I always tend to “complete” activities a lot quicker than others, which is another reason we don’t like group tours (we have to sit around and wait for everyone else), but with our private Bromo tour we could leave as quickly as we wanted.

Where will you visit on a Bromo Tour?

Bromo Mountain

You’re first spot will be the sunrise spot, wherever that may be. You’re second spot will be the sea of sands as you drive through, you’ll probably stop at another Bromo viewpoint, then you’ll head up the Bromo Crater.

You’re last spot will be Teletubbies Hill and you can even add on a waterfall to your tour for an extra fee of 100,000 if you wish which is called Coban Pelang. We didn’t so I can’t say how good it is.

When is the best time to do a Bromo tour?

The best season to do a Bromo tour is during the dry season of Indonesia. This runs from April to October. Brad and I visited in August and the weather was perfect. No rain in site and the views were amazing.

How much does a Bromo tour cost?

our guide a mount bromo

When I was pricing around for a Bromo tour, there was a wide range of prices that were coming back to me.

Some people were taking the piss and others were just expensive. So we went to our hotel in Malang, Whiz Prime and asked them about organising a tour. They put us in contact with Mr John who owns the Bromo sunrise tour company that’s located in Malang city centre. He offered two prices:

For a group tour: 650,000 per person (Around $45)

For a private tour: 750,000 per person (Around $52)

All including guide, entrance, transport and breakfast. And it was a great price and worth every penny we spent. This was the most expensive thing we paid for in all of Indonesia, so I was more than happy to pay it.

This is his whatsup number, if you want to book!

Should I do a Bromo Sunrise tour?

secret photo mount bromo

Yes, yes and yes. Whilst I am sure it’s nice to visit at other times of the day, you cannot go to Mount Bromo and not do a sunrise tour. It would be one of the biggest regrets ever.

Where are the best places to watch the sunrise on a Bromo Tour?

brad at bromo tour

When you go on a Bromo tour with a group, I would assume that there is a set destination for your sunrise spot. However, Brad and I went on a private tour and our driver basically suggested a few spots to us and let us decide.

He recommend Kong Hill, based on how busy that day was, and whilst Kong Hill is super busy, all you need to do is climb the sand hill a little bit and you’ll find spots with less people so you can enjoy your sunrise moment in peace.

Malang is the nearest airport to Mount Bromo. Malang is a pretty cool city to explore with its many great surroundings, so if you want to spend a few days there too, you can check out my post on the best things to do in Malang for some inspiration.

How long does it take to climb Mount Bromo?

top of crater at mount bromo

Even though Mount Bromo is located pretty high, you don’t climb on that. You’re already way up high, so the actual climb is around 30 minutes, depending on your fitness level.

It’s a fairly easy climb, but the thing that makes it challenging is the darn sand. It’s hard to get a grip in sand, so that’s why it can take a little longer getting up.

When you’re up there, you’ll literally on the edge of a crater that has sulphur down there. There is NO barrier to protect you after a certain point, so be super careful if you walk past other people and make sure there is no strong wind.

This make for an epic drone shot, but I wouldn’t do anything stupid on the edge of a crater. Just saying!

You can also get donkeys to bring you up to the crater, bar the last steps, (which are so dodgy and need re-doing- be careful), but please don’t use them. I have no idea how much they cost, but the donkeys don’t need it.

Is it safe to visit Mount Bromo?

Yes. Of course it’s an active volcano, so you’re probably thinking “what if it erupts?” well the national park monitors the activity of the volcano and if activity is too high etc, then you won’t be allowed to visit. So don’t worry, it’s safe to visit.

What do you wear to Mount Bromo?

cazzy at bromo touur

Warm clothes! It’s very cold up there before the sun rises. But if like Brad and I, you didn’t exactly pack your winter gear on a trip to Indonesia, well you’ll be happy to know that you can rent a thick winter coat up there for 30,000 IDR which is awesome.

You can also buy hats at 30,000, and they were a great investment and super cosy. It would have been such a horrible experience if we were not warm in some way. But you can also stay warm at the little fires they build at all the cafes.

You can buy coffee and tea for 5,000 to help stay warm too. It’s not overpriced, which is great.

Bromo tours: Booking online

If you prefer to have your tour organised ahead of time, then there are a few online tours I recommend.

If you're coming from Bali, then this tour combines Bromo and Ijen Crater into a 3 day tour. You can actually see these volcanoes from North West Bali on a clear day!

From Malang, you can opt for this tour which is well priced and got great reviews!

Mount Bromo Packing List

Just a list of a few items to remember to bring with you on your Bromo tour:

  • A good camera: we used a Canon G7 Mark II
  • A tripod if you want to timelapse
  • Money for hot drinks and food
  • Decent shoes you can walk in sand with and don’t mind getting covered in sand

So there you have it, my guide on everything you need to know about a Bromo sunrise tour. I hope you’ve found this most useful and hopefully I’ve answered most of the questions you are wondering, but if not, just drop a comment below and I’d be happy to help.

Happy travels.

Why Mount Bromo Should Be On Your Bucket List

If you love adventure , stunning landscapes, and cultural immersion , then a trip to Gunung Bromo (Gunung = Mountain) should definitely be on your bucket list. The combination of the towering active volcano , the sea of sand surrounding it, and the charming Tenggerese people who live in the area, make for a truly unique and unforgettable experience.

But with so many Mt Bromo tour options available, how do you choose the best one for you? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered.

Mount Bromo sunrise Indonesia

My Personal Mount Bromo Experience

I had the opportunity of visiting Mount Bromo last year and it was an absolute highlight of my trip to Indonesia. The tour I chose was a Surabaya Bromo Tour . This 3-day, 2-night Bromo tour package included a hike for sunrise at Bromo, a jeep ride through the sea of sand, and a visit to the nearby Tumpak Sewu Waterfall and then a trek up to Mount Ijen Crater Lake. It was everything I could have asked for and more.

Choosing The Right Mount Bromo Tour For You

Before booking Mount Bromo tours, consider the following factors to help you narrow down your options:

➡️ Tour type

➡️ Departure and Return Location

➡️ Group size

➡️ Tour Provider Reviews/Reputation

➡️ Inclusions and Exclusions

➡️ Duration

➡️ The level of physical activity involved

1. Picking Your Type of Tour

First things first – what type of tour suits you best? There are three main types to choose from:

➡️ Sunrise Tour: This is the classic Bromo Indonesia Tour experience. Waking up in the wee hours might seem daunting, but trust me, the spectacle of dawn breaking over the volcanic landscape is worth every bit of lost sleep. The downside? You’ll have to be ready for an early start, and the tour ends relatively early too, which might leave you wanting more.

sunrise over mount Bromo landscape at bromo Tengger National Park East Java

➡️ Full-Day Tour: If you’re not a morning person or simply want to explore at a more leisurely pace, this one’s for you. It offers the same awe-inspiring views without the early wake-up call. The only drawback is that it takes up an entire day.

➡️ Multi-Day Tours (MY RECOMMENDATION): For the ultimate experience, consider tours that include other stunning attractions like Mount Ijen, Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, and Madakaripura Waterfall. These tours offer a deeper immersion into the region’s natural beauty but require more time (and possibly a bit more energy). I recommend the 3D2N Bromo tour from Surabaya

2. Departure and Return Location

Mount Bromo Sunrise tour

So this one is pretty self-explanatory. It’s important to remember that Mount Bromo volcano tour pricing and itineraries will differ according to where you are departing from.

It’s PIVOTAL to know where your tour is departing from as well as its drop-off destination. Not all tours depart and drop off at the same location so make sure you check your tour details.

The Surabaya to Mount Bromo tour is the most common and the ones that leave from Malang. The trip from Surabaya to Mount Bromo National Park by car is approximately 2.5 hours. Always make contact with your tour providers about what you would like your itinerary to be (this is usually a bit more flexible with a private tour).

3. Group Size

Next, let’s talk about group size. Are you considering a private tour or a group one?

➡️ Private Tours (MY RECOMMENDATION): These are my personal favourite. With a private tour, you get a flexible schedule and the ability to customize your itinerary. Plus, you don’t have to worry about keeping up with a group or waiting around for others.

➡️ Group Tours: On the flip side, group tours can offer a vibrant social atmosphere. But be aware that larger groups might lack the intimacy and personal attention you get with smaller ones or private tours.

Depending on the type of tour you choose, the tour might have a minimum size, There are also small group private tours that are great for families and groups of friends.

4. Choosing a Reputable Tour Operator

Panoramic shot of Mount Bromo landscape at sunrise from Mount Penanjakan in Probolinggo East Java

Choosing a reputable tour operator is crucial. Companies like Viator, Get Your Guide and Klook are great options as they outsource to local tour operators. You can check how many times these tours have been booked and read reviews from fellow travellers.

TRAVELIST INSIGHT: Trying to visit Mount Bromo on your own might seem exciting, but it comes with safety risks and failing to pay for Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park entry fees really is NOT COOL. National parks need to be maintained and this is what these fees go towards.

💡 You may find a number of blog posts that ‘teach you’ how to visit Mount Bromo on your own, but if you are doing this just know you really are doing an injustice to Indonesian tourism by trying to cheat the system.

By choosing a tour, you’re supporting the local economy and families, contributing to the sustainability of tourism in the region.

5. Paying Attention to Inclusions and Exclusions

Always check what’s included in your tour. Some of the inclusions/exclusions I’d recommend checking are:

➡️ Transport to the different locations on your itinerary (Air-conditioned vehicle),

➡️ Meals (Breakfast and lunch)

➡️ Entrance fees

➡️ Jeep ride to the sunrise viewpoint, jeep ride to the Bromo crater rim area

➡️ Accommodation

Mount Bromo Jeep ride

Knowing what’s excluded helps avoid unexpected surprises and allows you to budget accordingly.

6. Considering the Duration

Whether it’s a day tour, an overnight escapade, or a multiple-day adventure, your choice should be guided by your schedule, stamina, and how immersive an experience you desire.

⌛ Short on time: If you are short on time then the sunrise tour is highly recommended. It’s also by far the most beautiful.

⌚ Plenty of time: Definitely choose the Multi-day tour experience and specify the sunrise tour option. Although it’s an early start that means your travel time to the next destination allows you plenty of time to catch up on sleep.

7. Assessing Physical Requirements

Lastly, consider the physical demands of the tour. Can you manage the trek to the crater? It doesn’t require a considerable level of fitness, but walking through the sand is uncomfortable to some (it is not ankle-deep or anything).

Also the Mount Bromo hike to the crater rim also only requires climbing up a few flights of stairs (yes they’ve created concrete stairs up to the crater rim) .

Mount Bromo stairs

If you’re not up for walking to the stairs, there are alternatives like horse rides or simply enjoying the view from a distance. Choose a tour that suits your fitness level to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable journey.

Mount Bromo tour with horse ride across sea of sand

Remember, every journey to Mount Bromo is unique, just like every traveller. By considering these factors, you’re one step closer to experiencing the magic of this volcanic marvel in a way that’s perfect for you. Happy adventuring!

“Yuni was an incredible guide! Always open to connecting and sharing and going the extra mile in accommodating wishes (like impromptu side visits for coffee, food recommendations for local food, stops for photography, taking scenic routes, etc.). Would love to go with him again! Logistics and selected accommodation was also of a general high quality. Would really appreciate better and early communication on the back end though. Notice of the activity confirmation from the provider came quite late (just 14 hours before the activity start). That said, appreciate the dedication of the team, and hope that consideration can be given to more process improvements to further elevate an already impressive experience!” -Ian

Preparation Tips for Your Mount Bromo Adventure

As you gear up for your exhilarating journey to the magnificent Mount Bromo, I’m here to share some essential preparation tips that I’ve gathered from my own adventures. Remember, a well-prepared traveller is a happy traveller!

1. Pack Smart 🎒: When it comes to packing for Mount Bromo, layers are your best friend. The temperature can vary quite dramatically from the base to the summit, so be ready to layer up or down as needed. A warm jacket is a must for the chilly mornings, while a hat and sunglasses will shield you from the midday sun. Don’t forget to pack comfortable hiking shoes, as you’ll be doing a fair bit of walking. And of course, keep your camera handy to capture the breathtaking views!

2. Weather Watch 🌦️: The weather on Mount Bromo can be unpredictable, so it’s wise to check the forecast before your trip. Generally, the dry season (April to October) offers the best conditions for a visit, but even then, afternoon showers are not uncommon. Pack a lightweight rain jacket just in case.

3. Stay Hydrated 🚰: With all the excitement and physical activity, it’s easy to forget to drink enough water. But staying hydrated is crucial, especially at high altitudes. Carry a reusable water bottle and refill it regularly during your tour.

4. Snack Attack 🍌: Trust me when I say that the Mount Bromo trek can work up a bit of an appetite. Pack some energy bars, nuts, or fruit for a quick snack on the go. Some tours might include meals, but having your own snacks ensures you won’t get hungry if the schedule changes.

5. Sun Protection 🌞: The sun can be deceptively strong on Mount Bromo, even on cloudy days. Protect your skin with a good sunscreen, and remember to reapply throughout the day.

6. Respect the Environment 🌿: Mount Bromo is a natural wonder that deserves our respect. Remember to carry a small bag for your trash and avoid straying from marked paths to protect the fragile ecosystem.

7. Early to Bed, Early to Rise ⏰: If you’re doing a sunrise tour (which I highly recommend!), try to get a good night’s sleep the day before. The early start will be much easier if you’re well-rested.

Things to know before you go to Mount Bromo

🌋 If your tour includes Mount Ijen

Mount Ijen is closed on the first Friday of every month for a local ceremony . Make sure you book your travel dates accordingly especially if you’re doing a multi-day tour.

🚽 Toilet Situation

If this is your first time in Asia, you may be in for a surprise. Some toilets in Java are what some would term ‘Asian’ or squat toilets. It’s somewhat self-explanatory in my opinion . In saying this, you often will not find toilet paper in these toilets. So it’s a good idea to always have a roll or some tissues on you when using public toilets.

This is mainly in public toilets, your hotel may be different. If you aren’t sure, I’d just double-check with your tour provider which hotels/accommodations you’re staying at and confirm your toilet situation. I know there are ‘basic’ and ‘premium’ accommodation options so this may also be one of the differences.

🛁 Towels & Toiletries

It’s highly recommended to bring your own towels – if you’re staying in a homestay/backpacker style accommodation it’s unlikely there will be a towel and toiletries provided for you. I usually bring my own toiletries to make life easier anyway.

🕌 Noise and the Islamic Call to Prayer

Java is a predominantly Muslim area. There may be a mosque next door or nearby, and you might be staying next to a busy street, so if you are a light sleeper these noises might be somewhat disruptive. Bring earplugs if this is something you may struggle with.

😋 Are you a Picky Eater?

Food in East Java is generally local – think nasi goreng, ayam goreng, mie goreng etc. All delicious! It may be a bit difficult to come by some Western food options if that’s what you’re used to. If you have special dietary requirements you may have to check with your tour provider if there are restaurants and hotels that can accommodate your needs.

🚗 Travel time is a thing

There definitely will be significant time spent driving in the car between destinations. A good few hours at a time. It’s great if you need to catch up on sleep. Sometimes it’s actually not really a case of the distance being significantly vast but actually the roads aren’t the best and you’ll have a number of vehicle types (trucks, buses etc. all using the same very narrow single-lane road.

📶 Don’t rely on the wifi in the area/hotel

As the places you’re travelling to are in the heart of Java, it’s not guaranteed that you’ll have wifi or even a great signal. Some of these hotels/accommodations are pretty high up in the countryside. I know often just used my own Telksomsel Prepaid SIM card throughout the trip. If you do not have access to wifi/signal – just take a break from online life (unless you need it for an emergency – but you’ll always find people to help in Java)

Mount Bromo Tour Frequently Asked Questions

Mount Bromo tour packages will differ in price depending on whether it’s a day trip or multi-day trip, where you depart from and whether it’s a private or shared trip. A multi-day trip can cost between $250 to $300 and a day trip can be from $50.

From trekking up its slopes to admiring its stunning views, there’s something for everyone here. With easy access by tours from the major cities, Mount Bromo is perfect for an adventurous trip or epic multiday itinerary.

Your guide arranges all the logistics for you so that you just show up and take it all in. Mount Bromo hiking does not take long at all. It depends on how long it takes you to walk across the sea of sand and up the stairs to the crater rim. Easily less than an hour but if you’re anything like me, you’ll be stopping for plenty of photos everywhere so take your time and soak it all in.

The Mount Bromo package tour usually will include transport from your hotel/accommodation by car to Mount Bromo National Park. This may be via a Jeep. Water is usually included and breakfast is usually packed for you or back at the hotel. Accommodation is also often included as well as a tour guide/driver.

Mount Bromo – active volcano in Indonesia

Bromo is an active volcano, located in East Java, Indonesia, inside the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. Mount Bromo sunrise and a hike to the volcano are the typical postcards views from Indonesia . And it’s no wonder why, as the view is breathtaking. Unfortunately, many people already have realized that, making Mount Bromo one of the most popular tourist attractions in East Java, Indonesia.   The massif, where the Bromo volcano belongs to is one of the most visited places on the island.

Bromo volcano is famous not only from its active caldera but also from a spectacular sunrise that you can watch above the valley. In fact, the Mount Bromo sunrise lookout points have an overview of three different volcanoes that are located next to each other. The view is really beautiful and worth an early start. But… because the sunrise over Bromo is so popular it can also get incredibly crowded. Like incredibly.

I know, I know, it can be a bit discouraging and I thought exactly the same when I’ve first heard about it. Luckily, there is a very simple way to enjoy the beautiful Mount Bromo hike on your own without the crowds and to see a beautiful sunrise above the massif for free, without the need of a tour. My tips below help you to have an intimate and peaceful hike to the top of Mount Bromo, help to save you a lot of money and also allow you to choose the best sunrise (and sunset!) viewing spot.

How to organize the mount bromo hike without the tour and with no crowds.

During our 10-day Indonesia trip , we managed to visit beautiful Bali, the paradise Gili islands, climb the fascinating Kawah Ijen volcano in East Java and organize the Mount Bromo hike with sunrise on our own. If we managed it with no problems, you can do it too. You really don’t need a tour for that.

If you are traveling in Indonesia, you can easily combine the visit to Bromo with an amazing hike to the Ijen volcano. Both of the hikes can be done in 3 days (or 2 days with a push). For details on how to climb the Ijen volcano in the best way follow my Kawah Ijen hike guide .

During our Indonesian trip, we were coming back from the direction of Bali , after doing the night hike to the Ijen volcano. You can do the same trip, or the other way round. You can find our 10 days Indonesia itinerary here for a better overview. We chose the route to Mount Bromo through Probolinggo, as it’s the easiest to get there by public transport.

If you’d rather go to Mount Bromo with a tour, this private trip from Surabaya to Mt. Bromo for sunrise is a good choice.

Mount Bromo hike Sea of Sand

#1 How to get from Kawah Ijen (or Bali) to Mount Bromo

If you climbed the Kawah Ijen crater earlier, there’s a high chance that you would want to also visit Bromo. Two volcanoes can be connected by one trip and you don’t need a private tour for that.

After you come back to Banyuwangi (Karangasem) town from Ijen hike, take a train from there to Probolinggo. If you come from Bali, you can take the same train and follow my route from here .

There are normally morning and afternoon trains. If you plan to take a morning train, I recommend booking it in advance online, as they can get pretty full. We took an afternoon train to be able to have some rest in between. The train ride takes around 2 hours and it’s a great opportunity to watch the changing scenery and people on the train.

Mount Bromo hike with no tour, Train to Probolinggo

#2 Probolinggo

Probolinggo is one of the biggest towns close to Bromo, where you can get by train. There is not much to see in Probolinggo itself, so just stay there for the night resting after climbing Ijen or go straight from there to the number 2 on the list. Or you can wander around and look for food markets. We found one on the way back when waiting for our train to Surabaya. Yum!

Where to stay in Probolinggo?

We didn’t have the best experience in the hostel, that we chose, so I am not going to recommend it here.  It’s good to either stay close to the train station, where you arrive, or to the bus station where you leave from. You can try one of those hostels instead, they have a good location and good reviews:

  • Misran Homestay
  • Hary’s Homestay

Food market in Probolinggo, on the way to Bromo hike

#3 Cemoro Lawang

The next step in your journey to Bromo volcano is to get from Probolinggo to Cemoro Lawang. Cemoro Lawang is a small town in the mountains, located at the base of the Mount Bromo hike and a Bromo sunrise trip. The journey from Probolinggo to Cemoro Lawang takes around 2h along the windy roads and it’s very picturesque.

How to get to Cemoro Lawang from Probolinggo?

There are several ways of getting to Cemoro Lawang. The best and cheapest option is to take a bemo (a public bus). There is also an option for a taxi or a motorbike. I even tried hitch-hiking but it didn’t quite work there.

#1 Take a bemo

The cheapest way to get to Cemoro Lawang is to take a public bus, called bemo. There are several bemos going from Probolinggo to Cemoro Lawang every day.  But there is a catch.

The bemos leave only when full. Bemo can fit around 15 people and it normally waits until at least 10 people gather up, so the driver can earn some money on the transport.

Sometimes, if there is a lot of people waiting, they can leave quite quickly. Other times, it means waiting for hours for more people to arrive.

You have the option of waiting or you can also pay for the empty seats. You need to calculate if this would make sense for you, as otherwise, you can another way of transport.  Very often travelers, who don’t want to waste a lot of time waiting for more passengers, buy empty seats. The entire vehicle (15 seats) costs 450,000 rupiahs (1 seat is 30 000 rupiahs). It’s probably not the best practice as it teaches the drivers to wait for tourists so they can pay for every seat, but it works if you don’t want to spend the whole day at the bus stop. We were waiting for 1,5h with 3 other people and then we decided to pay the outstanding amount and leave.

If you don’t want to pay for the empty seats, try to arrive earlier in the day as then it’s easier to fill the bus with passengers. If you arrive later in the afternoon, you will have very few chances for the bus to fill up.

Bemos depart from the place near the main bus station in Probolinggo called Terminal Bayuangga  (but not from the station itself). You need to go along the road after you pass the fence to the station and you will see some bemos waiting by the road. There are many local shops and cafes there. If you look on Google Maps, it actually has a name “Public Mini Bus Bromo”

#2 Take a taxi

Another (not a budget) option is to take a taxi. You will frequently hear the taxi drivers offering you a ride when you wait for bemo to depart.

#3 Take ojek/motorbike

We’ve also got offered transport by motorbike or ojek (which is a seat at the back of the motorbike). We were two people, so we didn’t go for it. It’s worth keeping in mind that the way to Cemoro Lawang is quite long (2h in a car) and the roads are windy. The motorbike ride might be very uncomfortable, long, and even dangerous. I do not recommend it.

*From some other reports, I’ve heard that some people were charged 10k IDR for entry to Cemoro Lawang. However, we didn’t need to pay anything.

Mount Bromo hike with no tour

Where to stay in Cemoro Lawang?

I can recommend staying closer to the hiking route to Bromo and close to the path leading to the sunrise viewpoint.

We stayed in Wisma Yog Bromo Homestay . For 386 479 IDR you can get a double room with a shared bathroom , but no breakfast. We had some good food in the warung nearby. Wisma Yog is one of the closest hostels to the non-official, but the widely used route to climb the Bromo crater.

Alternatively, you can choose located next door, Cemara Indah hotel , which has a better standard and is also a great start for Mount Bromo hike and departure point for the Bromo sunrise.

Mount Bromo hike

After arriving in Cemoro Lawang, you can leisurely climb the Mount Bromo crater and admire the active volcano with no crowds.

Mount Bromo is 2,329 meters high, but the hike to the top of the crater is not a difficult one. From the Wisma Yog hotel , where we stayed, it takes around 45 minutes one way. You can easily walk there, no need to take a jeep or a horse. Please, do not take those poor horses.

There is a set of steep steps leading to the top of the Mount Bromo crater, but they are not overly difficult.

Mount Bromo is an active volcano, with recent eruptions happening in 2004, 2010, 2011, and 2015. Therefore always check before traveling what is the current situation.

The landscape looks like from another planet. The experience at the top of the Bromo volcano is also very special – you can hear the inside of the Earth. The sound coming from the middle of the volcano reminds me of the sound of a starting plane. It was my first time hiking the active volcano and it was a great experience.

View to the Sea of Sand and the Hindu temple in Mount Bromo hike

The Sea of Sand

The Bromo volcano lies in the middle of the big plain, which is called the Sea of Sand. It’s a big area, that looks like a desert and it’s filled with the fine volcanic sand from the previous eruptions of Mount Bromo. In order to reach Mount Bromo, you need to cross the Sea of Sand.   On the way to the volcano, you’ll also pass a Hindu temple.

Mount Bromo hike without the crowds

The secret to the Mount Bromo hike without the crowds is to go for a hike in the afternoon or late morning when all the organized tours leave.

That’s it! Easy, right? 😉

The typical itinerary for the Mount Bromo organized tour is as follows. First, they drive for Mount Bromo sunrise to one of the famous viewpoints like King Kong Hill. After sunrise, all the tours go together for a Mount Bromo’s hike to the crater. They pass through the Park gate which is located somewhere at the beginning of the Sea of Sand. That’s where they normally need to pay the foreigner entrance fee of 220,000 IDR on weekdays or 320,000 IDR on weekends & holidays. We haven’t seen that gate and we’ve been told that there is rarely someone there in the afternoon anyway. I guess they make all their money from the insane amount of tours in the morning.

Then, everyone from the organized Mount Bromo tours goes up the crater.

You can imagine the number of people that are there at the same time – insane . It is not enjoyable and not very safe, either. We were watching the jeeps driving up the hill to the sunrise and it was a never-ending line of cars. Hundreds and hundreds of cars were going to one single place at the same time. I don’t know about you, but for me, this is far from enjoyable and just sounds like a nightmare. That’s what we wanted to avoid. And it worked!

When you go to do the Mount Bromo hike after all of the tours leave, it’s only you, the rumbling volcano, and a few other people. Great experience!

Mount Bromo hike, on top of the crater

Follow these steps for the free Mount Bromo hike without the crowds:

1. Find the local entrance to Mount Bromo Park.

The entrance is a non-official one and it’s used by the local horseman. It’s located on the right side at the back of the Cemara Indah hotel (which is just next to Wisma Yog Homestay). There’s a security booth for the hotel just next to it, but when we walked around several times, nobody told us anything. The hotel is located on the hill, so the path takes you straight down to the Sea of sand. You can clearly see the volcano from the top of the hill, next to the hotel, and you can also easily see it when you reach the Sea of Sands, so you will not have any problems with navigation. Walking to the crater from there should take up to an hour.

2. Cross the Sea of Sand in the direction of the volcano. There are some paths you can take, but really it’s just the massive area full of volcanic ash, so you can just cut through and direct yourself toward the volcano on the horizon.

3. On the way, you will pass by the Hindu temple. It was closed when we were there.

4. Pass on the left side of the temple and go towards the left, where you can see a small Bromo crater. The path up the Mount Bromo crater goes uphill and then closer to the crater it changes into a set of steep steps. It is not difficult at all.

5. From the top of the volcano, you have amazing views of the surrounding area and the other 2 volcanoes inside the Bromo massif. You can also clearly see inside the crater. Sometimes the sulfur cloud can be quite thick and the rumbling of the volcano is very loud. The sensation is just crazy!

6. After the Mount Bromo hike, go to sleep early as you need to wake up for another sunrise.

Tip:   Take something to protect your eyes and mouth, as well as the camera from dust. If there is even a little bit of wind, the dust will be everywhere.

Steps to the top of the Mount Bromo crater during the Mount Bromo hike

How to find the best place for Mount Bromo sunrise?

There are several different hills on each side of Cemoro Lawang town, that are good for watching Mount Bromo sunrise. It’s just a matter of finding the best one for you and avoiding the crowds.

We decided to walk to the closest hill, where we found a perfect spot.

In order to catch Mount Bromo sunrise on time, start hiking early. If you stay close to Cemara Indah Hotel, do not leave later than 3 am. We started even earlier, as I wanted to take some night photos before sunrise.

  • Start at Cemara Indah Hotel . It’s the same place where you passed the day before when going down to the Sea of Sand and then hiking to Mount Bromo.
  • From there, follow the road up the mountain. On the night of our climb, it was entirely dark, so we could barely see our surroundings. From time to time there was only a motorbike passing us by. It’s good to have a torch handy.
  • After around an hour, you will see the first lookout point for Mount Bromo sunrise with locals preparing food and tea for tourists. It’s located on the bend in the road. You can see the volcano from there, but the view is a bit obstructed by the trees, so I recommend going further on.
  • After 15 minutes, you will get to another lookout point, which is called the Seruni viewpoint. You will recognize it immediately from the concrete platforms. The best viewing point for Mount Bromo sunrise is located on top of those platforms. We were thinking about hiking further, but the view from where we were was really good (see photos), so we stayed. If you climb to the roof, which is not difficult, you will have a comfortable sitting position. Closer to the sunrise, the place got really crowded, but our spot was still with the best view. In my opinion, there is no point of hiking more and you can settle on the top of the roof in Seruni point for the best view without any obstacles.
  • There are also other lookout points further on the way. The famous one is the viewpoint at Mount Penanjakan 1 and 2. It is, however, usually crowded and full of jeeps, as they can drive all the way up.  I do not recommend going there. We were observing hundreds and hundreds of jeeps driving through the Sea of Sand at night to get to that viewpoint for the sunrise. You also have an option of walking to the viewpoint called King Kong Hill and Love Hill.

Mount Bromo sunrise spot

After sunrise, go back to the hotel and catch a bus back to Probolinggo. It’s the same story that was on the way there, so the bemos only leave when there are enough people. However, it is much easier to fill them up, as many people come back to town after sunrise. From Probolinggo you can get a train to Surabaya. There is an airport in Surabaya with connecting flights to Jakarta.

Not fussed about Mount Bromo sunrise? Try the sunset instead!

Honestly, although I always prefer sunrises, mainly for their tranquility and peacefulness of the waking up world, when it comes to Mount Bromo, I would recommend the sunset instead. Everyone knows how crazy the Mount Bromo sunrise is, so if you want to entirely avoid the whole hassle of waking up at night, walking to the viewpoint, and still being surrounded by other people, then you can just sleep in and watch the sunset in the evening. The sunset can be viewed from many places, even in the center of Cemoro Lawang town.

We found a nice spot, where they were also selling Bakso (an Indonesian type of meatball), so we had dinner with a view. This lookout point is located just in the town center. On the junction coming from Cemara Indah Hotel, you need to turn right and follow the road up. After a few minutes, you will see a big square with a view of Mount Bromo. You can walk a bit further, taking the path to the left, in a direction to the grassy hill, where you can have an even better view. It can also be a good Mount Bromo sunrise viewpoint, but I expect it to be crowded as there is another hotel just next to it.

Key info for the Mount Bromo hike and sunrise

  • Cemoro Lawang is the town at the base of Mount Bromo.
  • Mount Bromo entrance fee is 220,000 IDR on weekdays, and 320,000 IDR on weekends & holidays for foreigners, but it’s often not collected in the afternoon and the gate is located far from the route described above.

  • Stay in the hotel which is located close to the route for the Mount Bromo hike and the sunrise path. I can recommend a budget option Wisma Yog or mid-range Cemara Indah Hotel.
  • Consider doing sunset instead of sunrise for a quieter experience.
  • Enjoy the beautiful Mount Bromo hike without the crowds!

What to pack for Bromo

Below are the necessary items that you need to have for your Bromo adventure:

  • Sunglasses – the sun is very strong, and the dust can easily get into your eyes. Check UV sunglasses at a good price here.
  • Hiking shoes  or sneakers
  • Suncream  – I use  this suncream as it has great protection and good skin care.
  • Small  day backpack
  • Scarf for the dust
  • Hat to protect from the sun
  • First aid kit  – you never know what might happen (like to me in  Svalbard ), so better be safe
  • Torch for walking for the sunrise – the best is   a head torch , so you can keep your hands free
  • Water – I recommend a reusable water bottle or Filter bottle that you can fill in and save money and reduce plastic usage. If you don’t have access to refilling water, then you can use a  water bottle with a filter like LifeStraw  to have clean water on the go.  Check the price here .
  • Some warm clothes – long-sleeve shirt/jumper/light waterproof jacket (for example packable rain jacket ) in case of rain. It wasn’t cold in Bromo in October, but in the early morning, it can get chilly.
  • Camera – I took pictures in this post with my Fuji X-E1 mirrorless camera . I often used the landscape lens – Samyang 12 mm, F 2.0 lens. If you take photos with your phone, consider getting a selfie stick and tripod in one .

Chinese woman posing for photo dies after fall from edge of crater on Indonesian volcano

A Chinese woman died after and falling off the edge of a crater while posing for a photo on an Indonesian volcano known for its popular “blue fire” phenomenon .

Huang Lihong, 31, and her husband Zhang Yong were in the East Java province on a guided tour when the incident took place. The duo, in their bid to watch the sunrise, had climbed to the edge of the crater of Ijen – a volcano tourism park in the region, reported Hongxing News.

According to the police, she plummeted from a height of 75m and died from the impact of her fall. The death has been marked as an accident, police officials said.

Initially, she was maintaining a safe distance of two to three metres away from the edge of the cliff while taking the photos, the tour guide said.

He added that he had warned the couple about the dangerous points.

However, Lihong then started moving backwards to take a photo closer to a tree for a backdrop of bare straggly branches, the guide said.

She accidentally stepped on her long and flowing clothing while walking backwards, causing her to fall off the cliff, according to reports.

It is not immediately clear if she was wearing a skirt or a dress.

The Ijen volcano is known for its “blue fire” caused by the blue light emitted from the combustion of sulfuric gases.

In 2018, scores of people were forced to evacuate their homes and at least 30 people were hospitalised after the volcano started to emit toxic gases.

Mount Ijen regularly releases small amounts of noxious gases but the site stays open to the public.

Indonesia is home to around 130 active volcanoes. Millions of Indonesians live and work near volcanoes, largely because of the fertile farming soil.
