Earn extra rewards and find our best prices for flights, hotels and car rentals.

What is Capital One Travel?

Capital One Travel is an online booking experience for Capital One rewards credit cardholders in partnership with Hopper. It launched in 2021 to make trip planning and travel enjoyable and hassle free for eligible Capital One cardholders.

Capital One Travel sorts through thousands of options to help you get Capital One’s best prices for flights, hotels and car rentals and confidently book your travel online. 1 As a bonus, eligible cardholders can earn extra rewards when booking through Capital One Travel.

Capital One Travel features and benefits

Cardholders can sign in to Capital One Travel to compare prices and book flights, hotels and rental cars. But that’s just the start.

You’ll have access to unique tools and offers before and after you book, giving you a rewarding, flexible travel experience. Here’s a closer look at some of the benefits of Capital One Travel:

Cancel your flight for any reason

Need to make your travel booking more flexible? For a small fee when booking, you can add the option to cancel your flight for any reason.

This option gives you the ability to cancel your flight up to a set time within your scheduled departure. Capital One Travel will issue a refund—typically 70%-90% of the ticket price—to your original payment method.

Sometimes, you’ll also have the option to choose an airline credit worth 100% of your original ticket cost instead of the refund. Airline credit availability depends on the airline’s policies. If you choose this option, Capital One Travel will still cover any related cancellation or rebooking fees. 2

Freeze the price of a flight

Want a little extra time to decide on a flight but don’t want to stress about the price going up? For some flights offered through Capital One Travel, you can “freeze” the price for a specific period of time by paying a small fee.

When you freeze the price of the flight, Capital One Travel will hold that price for you until the expiration date of your frozen price. That expiration date will be given to you before completing your purchase.

If the price of the flight increases after you freeze it (and before your frozen price expires), Capital One Travel will cover any fare increase up to your maximum refund limit. And if the price goes down, you’ll pay the current lower price. 3

Earn bonus rewards

When you book that fabulous hotel room for the weekend or reserve a car rental for a scenic drive, you’re earning extra rewards you can put toward your next trip.

Venture X and Venture X Business cardholders get 10X miles on hotels and rental cars and 5X miles on flights booked through Capital One Travel.

And when booking through Capital One Travel with other eligible U.S.-issued Capital One cards, earn 5X miles or 5% cash back on hotels and car rentals, depending on the card:

  • Travel credit cards : Venture, VentureOne
  • Cash back credit cards : Quicksilver, QuicksilverOne, Quicksilver for Good Credit, Quicksilver Student, Quicksilver Secured and Capital One Walmart Rewards® Card
  • Dining and entertainment credit cards : Savor, SavorOne, SavorOne Student, SavorOne for Good Credit
  • Business credit cards : Spark Miles, Spark Miles Select, Spark Cash Select, Spark Classic, Spark Cash Plus

Get price prediction and price watch alerts for flights

Looking for the best time to book flights? When you search for flights on Capital One Travel, you’ll see a recommendation to either book now or wait for a better price. Capital One Travel uses artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze billions of data points and predict how flight prices will fluctuate.

To get started, you can set a price alert for the destination and dates you’re interested in flying. Capital One Travel will monitor prices 24/7 and let you know when it’s time to book. With help from our price predictions and alerts, you can save an average of 15% on flights. 4

Get free price drop protection for flights

Did you book a flight to visit loved ones based on Capital One Travel recommendations? If you booked at a recommended time, Capital One Travel will keep watching the price for 10 days. If it drops, you get up to $50 in travel credit for the difference. 5

Get Capital One Travel's best prices, guaranteed

If you find a better price on the same flight, hotel or car rental, Capital One Travel will match it. Simply submit a request within 24 hours of booking with us, and Capital One Travel will give you a travel credit for the difference. For hotels, we also proactively adjust our prices to guarantee they match or beat other travel sites. 6

Key takeaways

  • The Capital One miles program is flexible and user-friendly, making it a great choice for new travel rewards users.
  • The Capital One Venture X in particular is a good option for travelers who are looking for a luxury travel card, but without the high annual fee associated with other popular products.
  • As with any travel card, it's still important to make sure potential Capital One miles redemptions make sense for your travel and spending habits.

If you’re looking for a prime example of how a credit card rewards program can offset travel costs and maximize value, look no further than Capital One miles. This rewards program is user-friendly, flexible and offers a number of valuable redemption options.

In this guide we’ll take a closer look at what Capital One miles are, how you can earn and redeem them, which credit cards earn Capital One miles and everything else you need to know about this rewards program.

Capital One miles basics

Capital One miles — also known as Capital One Rewards or Capital One Travel Rewards — is the rewards program for several Capital One credit cards. With this program, you’ll earn miles on all qualifying purchases, which you can then redeem for travel or non-travel options. The number of miles you’ll earn vary depending on the card you have, but several Capital One cards allow you to earn more miles for certain types of travel purchases.

Who is the Capital One miles program best for?

The Capital One miles rewards program is best for people who travel frequently and would rather earn and redeem flexible travel rewards instead of cash back.

How to earn Capital One miles

Many people don’t take advantage of the full potential of their travel rewards cards because the process can be confusing and overwhelming. Luckily, earning miles toward your next flight or hotel stay is easy with Capital One.

Earn with eligible credit card spending

To earn miles, simply use one of the Capital One credit cards that earn miles — the Capital One VentureOne Rewards for Good Credit card, Capital One VentureOne Rewards credit card, Capital One Venture Rewards credit card, Capital One Venture X Rewards credit card, Capital One Spark 2X Miles for Business or Capital One Spark 1.5X Miles Select for Business.

With these Capital One cards, there’s no limit to the number of miles you can earn. No matter which card you have, you’ll earn miles on all purchases you make. With the more premium cards, however, you’ll earn boosted miles on certain types of travel purchases — like the 10X miles on hotels and rental cars and 5X on miles booked through Capital One Travel with the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card.

Earn with a credit card welcome bonus

All of the above-mentioned Capital One cards with the exception of the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card for Good Credit offer welcome bonuses for new cardholders, offering you the chance to earn thousands of extra miles as long as you meet certain spending requirements.

For example, you can earn 75,000 miles after spending $4,000 within the first three months for both the Capital One Venture and Capital One Venture X . Or, you could earn 50,000 miles after spending $4,500 within the first three months with the Capital One Spark 2X Miles for Business.

How to redeem Capital One miles

To redeem your Capital One miles, log in to your account via the website or Capital One mobile app . Then, go to the rewards page and choose which redemption option you’re interested in. Here are all of the ways you can redeem your Capital One miles:

Redeem for travel purchases

The best way to redeem Capital One miles is for travel purchases , including transfers to Capital One travel partners. Through the Capital One travel portal , you can redeem your miles for flights, hotel stays, car rentals, vacation packages and more. Alternatively, you can redeem your miles to cover qualifying travel purchases made with your card within 90 days of purchase.

Redeem for transfers to travel partners

Capital One has more than 15 airline and hotel partners you can transfer your rewards to. As with booking travel through Capital One Travel, this is one of the best ways to redeem your rewards, since you’ll usually get far more value out of your miles.

Redeem for gift cards

If you don’t want to use your miles for travel, you can also redeem them for gift cards to popular merchants. Some merchants include Apple, Best Buy and Barnes & Noble.

Redeem for cash back

You can also choose to redeem your miles for cash through the “cash” section of the redemption portal. Cash back can be redeemed in the form of a statement credit, account credit or check. However, keep in mind that this is not the best way to use Capital One miles since you’ll get far less value out of this redemption method.

Redeem for event tickets

Another option is to redeem your miles for tickets to a wide variety of events — including sports, dining and music events — through Capital One Entertainment .

Redeem for PayPal or Amazon shopping

If you want to redeem your miles for online shopping purchases, you have two options: PayPal or Amazon. With PayPal, you’ll shop with a participating merchant and choose the option to checkout with PayPal. Then, you’ll choose your linked Capital One card and pay with Capital One Rewards.

Shopping with Amazon follows a similar process. First, you’ll link your eligible Capital One card to its Shop with Points program. Then, you’ll shop on Amazon and choose the option to pay with Capital One Rewards.

How much are Capital One miles worth?

According to valuations from Bankrate , Capital One miles are worth about 1.7 cents each. This valuation falls into the mid- to high-range for credit card rewards programs. Of course, how you choose to redeem your rewards ultimately determines the value of your rewards.

How do Capital One miles compare to other programs?

For comparison, here is how Capital One miles stack up against other major credit card rewards programs:

Credit card rewards program

Capital One miles transfer partners

Transferring miles to Capital One transfer partners is easy. Once you’re logged in to your account, go to the Capital One rewards page. Then, select the option to transfer rewards and choose which partner you’d like to transfer your miles to. Keep in mind that when you transfer your miles to a loyalty partner, transfers are irreversible.

Note that Capital One miles transfers can take up to five business days to process, but travelers on a time crunch are not out of luck. Several Capital One travel partners offer instant transfers, while others take 24 to 36 hours (rather than five business days).

The Capital One Travel portal is an online travel platform that allows customers to book flights, hotels, and rental cars. The site provides exclusive travel deals, discounts, and tools to help you save on your next vacation. Select Capital One credit card customers can earn elevated rewards for every purchase made through the portal or redeem them for bookings. It's a great tool that lets you make all your travel reservations in one place and takes the guesswork out of redeeming miles.

However, Capital One Travel also has several downsides. You're giving up loyalty rewards with those programs by booking hotels and rental cars through Capital One. The Price Freeze function also doesn't work as promised and redeeming Capital One miles for travel bookings may not be the best way to maximize your rewards.

Overview of the Portal

The Capital One Travel Portal offers excellent value for money and flexibility, with various travel options to suit any budget. It also provides a range of rewards, discounts, and tools to help you save on your travels.

With the added convenience of booking flights, hotels, and car rentals all in one place, it is the perfect choice for anyone looking to book their next trip. While some of its features are more gimmicky than others, the fact remains that this portal provides ease and convenience for travelers who don't want to deal with multiple booking platforms and loyalty programs.

The Capital One Travel portal is a travel booking platform powered by Hopper, an app that helps travelers pick the best times to book and travel at the lowest prices. Capital One Travel offers competitive prices, exclusive discounts, and access to a wide selection of flight, hotel, and rental car options for Capital One cardholders. Customers can use the portal to earn and redeem rewards on travel bookings.

Additionally, the portal provides helpful tools such as a price calendar to find the cheapest airfares and price drop protection that will refund the fare difference if it drops post-booking. The portal also has a price freeze feature, which allows users to "freeze" a specific airfare for up to $25 or 2,500 miles.

Benefits of Booking Through the Portal

One of the key benefits of using the Capital One Travel portal is that certain types of bookings will earn you higher rewards when you pay with an eligible Capital One credit card. For example, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card earns 10 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars and 5 miles per dollar on flights booked through Capital One travel. And with the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card , you'll earn 5 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars booked through the portal.

This works out well for Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card cardholders' flight bookings since Capital One lets you enter your frequent flyer number on the booking page. You'll not only earn elevated Capital One miles, but you'll also earn airline miles and elite-qualifying miles through your chosen frequent flyer program. You won't get the same benefits on hotel or rental car bookings, so that's worth weighing into your booking decision.

Above all else, the Capital One Travel portal provides convenient and easy travel booking. You can use it to compare airfare from multiple airlines at once, helping you find the best deal on your next trip. Additionally, you can use your Capital One miles to pay for travel bookings at a rate of 1 cent per mile, or get discounted rates on certain flights or hotel stays. Finally, customers have access to customer service representatives who can answer questions and assist with bookings.

How to Use Capital One Miles

The Capital One Travel portal can be a great way to earn elevated rewards and enjoy extra perks. Booking flights through this portal can make sense since you can double-dip, earning rewards with your credit card and frequent flyer miles from airlines. However, you won't earn hotel points or elite night credits on Capital One bookings, which means you'll miss out on possible elite benefits with major hotel loyalty programs. Depending on how often you travel, this could be a significant downside.

Transferring Capital One miles to one of the 18 airline or hotel partners can be a much better value proposition. If you redeem your miles for business and first-class travel, you'll usually get more than the 1 cent per mile your rewards are worth through the Capital One Travel portal. For example, a sample of fun, valuable ways to use the Capital One VentureOne welcome bonus of 20,000 miles after spending $500 on purchases within three months from account opening.

However, not all card members want to learn the ins and outs of various loyalty programs to get the most value. Some people want simplicity and the Capital One Travel portal offers just that. If you prefer convenience over value, booking with the Capital One Travel portal is a smart move. But if you're willing to put in the legwork for a high-value redemption, transferring Capital One miles to an airline or hotel program is the best option.

Using the Capital One Travel Portal is straightforward. Simply head to travel.capitalone.com and log into your account. From here, you can select between a flight, hotel, or rental car tab. Enter your destination and travel dates, then browse through the available options.

You can filter results by price, airline, hotel type, and more to find the best deal. Once you've made your selection, you can book directly with Capital One and either pay with your eligible Capital One card or use miles to pay for all or part of your trip.

Before booking anything, check out the travel offers section underneath the tabs mentioned above. Here, you'll find travel credits in select target markets. If you make a qualifying booking, you'll get a travel credit that's applicable toward future bookings.

How to Book Flights Through the Capital One Travel Portal

You can book flights with both domestic and international airlines through the Capital One travel portal. On the Capital One Travel homepage, select the "Flights" tab and enter the number of travelers, departure city, destination, and travel dates. You can book both one-way and round-trip flights.

When you select your travel dates, a color-coded calendar will show the cheapest and most expensive travel dates. This is great when your travel dates are flexible and you just want to find the lowest fare.

Choose your outbound and return dates on the calendar and select "done." Next, select the blue "search flights" button to generate your search results. On the results page, you can sort by price, departure time, arrival time, number of stops, and duration. You can also filter results by fare class, stops, airline, time, and price.

Capital One offers a price predictor tool at the top of the page, recommending whether it's a good time to book a particular price. You'll also get the option to freeze a specific price and book it later, though this feature isn't reliable in my experience. If you're not ready to book, you can select "watch this trip" to receive alerts when fares drop.

You'll also get the option to purchase cancel for any reason insurance ( CFAR travel insurance ) during the flight booking process. And, if Capital One Travel recommends you buy a specific flight now, it will apply free price drop protection to that flight for 10 days. If the price drops within that time period, Capital One will credit you the difference in fare, up to a maximum of $50.

How to Book Hotels Through the Capital One Travel Portal

Booking hotels through Capital One Travel is similar to booking flights. On the top of the Capital One Travel page, select the "Hotels" tab. Enter your destination, travel dates, number of travelers, and rooms, then select "Search Hotels."

Unlike the flight search tool, there is no calendar function displaying the lowest rates. However, the hotel search tool does have a city map to help you narrow down your options and find the cheapest rates. Hotel search results can also be filtered by star rating, amenities, price, and amenities. You can also sort results by price and star rating.

Once you select your room and rate, you'll be directed to the checkout page to see your total amount due in miles or cash. You can choose to pay either the cash rate or redeem miles. Note that some hotels charge additional service fees at check-in. These will be displayed on the checkout page, but you won't pay them until you get to the hotel.

How to Book Rental Cars Through the Capital One Travel Portal

To book a rental car, select the "Rental Cars" tab on the Capital One Travel portal and enter your pick-up and drop-off location, rental dates, pick-up and drop-off time, and driver age. Drivers under the age of 25 may be subject to additional fees. Click "Search Cars" to be redirected to the results page.

You can filter results by vehicle type, price per day, rental car company, cancellation policy, and other factors. As with flights and hotel bookings, Capital One displays both the total cash rate and mileage redemption rate (including taxes and fees). Once you've selected your vehicle, you'll get to a booking page displaying your total. During booking, you'll pay the rental cost minus taxes. The taxes will be collected at pick-up.

The Capital One Premier Collection is a curated list of luxury hotels and resorts worldwide that eligible cardholders can access via the Capital One Travel portal. Each property offers special benefits and includes bonus points and money-saving extras, including daily breakfast for two, experience credits, and room upgrades when available.

In addition to earning bonus points, eligible cardholders can also redeem Capital One miles toward their Premier Collection bookings. That's a huge plus, considering some of the properties in the collection are quite pricey. For example, Montage Hotels often have room rates of $1,000 per night or higher. Being able to redeem miles for these stays is a great way to save on upscale hotel bookings.

Capital One Premier Collection Hotels

Some Premier Collection hotels are operated by major hotel chains, while others are independent. Regardless of the hotel's affiliation, booking through the Premier Collection can help you secure added benefits typically reserved for elite members or those willing to pay extra for them.

There are currently seven major hotel chains represented in the collection. They include upscale brands like 1 Hotels, Design Hotels, Leading Hotels of the World, Montage, Preferred Hotels & Resorts, Small Luxury Hotels of the World, and Viceroy Hotels.

Some of these names may be more familiar than others. They include high-end hotels like the Montage Laguna Beach, Viceroy Los Cabos, Hotel Cafe Royal London, and the Wittmore in Barcelona.

Who Can Book the Capital One Premier Collection?

The only Capital One credit cards that have access to the Premier Collection are the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card and Capital One Venture X Business Card† . Both of these are premium cards with high annual fees; for example, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card costs $395 per year ( rates and fees ) but comes with an annual $300 travel credit you can apply toward Premier Collection bookings. In addition to all the hotel-specific benefits, cardholders who book a Premier Collection stay will earn 10 miles per dollar spent — the highest travel booking payout of any transferable points card.

The Capital One Venture X Business Card was previously known as the Capital One Spark Travel Elite, and it's very similar to the Venture X. It has the same $395 annual fee, $300 travel credit, and 10,000 annual bonus miles.

Both cards are great for travel enthusiasts and those looking to earn generous rewards on their daily spending. While the Premier Collection access is not enough reason to get a Venture X card (the list of participating hotels is limited), it is an excellent addition to the various other benefits these cards offer.

Capital One Premier Collection Benefits

Booking through Premier Collection provides travelers with various perks, including special amenities and bonus miles. The following benefits are available at Premier Collection properties worldwide:

  • 10 miles per dollar on hotel bookings
  • $100 experience credit per stay
  • Daily breakfast for two
  • Space-available room upgrade
  • Early check-in and late check-out
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi

The experience credit will vary by property, but you'll need to charge the qualifying expense to your room to receive it. The hotel will then apply the credit to your folio upon checkout.

The daily breakfast can be especially valuable in high-priced destinations like the Maldives, where the remote setting often translates to breakfast charges of $50 or more per person. Having breakfast included in the cost of your stay, along with $100 toward some of the most expensive spa treatments in the world, is an excellent value in exchange for booking a stay through Capital One's Premier Collection.

Capital One Credit Cards That Are Eligible for the Travel Portal

You don't necessarily need a high-priced travel credit card to use the Capital One Travel portal. The platform is open to many Capital One cardholders, including those who carry a student credit card or small-business credit card issued by Capital One.

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card includes $300 per year in credits toward Capital One Travel bookings, which helps offset much of the card's $395 annual fee.

Capital One miles are worth 1 cent each in the Capital One Travel Portal. This is pretty generous, considering miles are earned at a rate of 2 to 5 per dollar spent with the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card and 2 to 10 miles per dollar on the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card.

However, it's possible to get more value from your miles by skipping the portal and instead transferring rewards to Capital One's transfer partners . You can transfer miles to 18 airline and hotel loyalty programs to book award travel.

Business Insider's points and miles valuations peg the value of Capital One miles at 1.7 cents each, because it's possible to get outsized value from transferring miles to partners and booking award flights or stays. Best premium card: Capital One Venture X Card

The Venture X packs a lot of travel rewards into a card that costs hundreds of dollars less than its competitors.

Why we like it: The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card offers rich rewards and travel perks, and unlike many other premium travel credit cards, the Venture X doesn't make you jump through many hoops to earn back the cost of its steep annual fee. In addition to a Capital One Travel credit and bonus miles each year, you'll also get complimentary access to a number of airport lounge networks with more than 1,300 locations around the world.

The card also offers ultimate flexibility when it comes to redeeming your rewards for travel. You can book with miles through Capital One Travel, or if you want more options, you can use your card to pay for travel-related expenses and request a statement credit. If you're feeling ambitious, you can even transfer your rewards to various frequent flyer and hotel rewards programs and potentially get more value from your miles.

The Venture Card puts the power into your hands by earning miles that you can either use against your travel purchases or transfer to travel partners.

Travel rewards can get complicated, which is why the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card feels like a breath of fresh air. The card offers a high, flat rewards rate on your everyday spending, so you don't need to keep track of different bonus rewards categories. It also offers extra miles on select travel booked through the Capital One Travel platform.

You can redeem your miles by booking travel through Capital One Travel or by using your card to pay for travel on your own and requesting a statement credit. Alternatively, you can transfer your miles to airline and hotel rewards program partners for more dynamic redemptions. The card also comes with complimentary Hertz Five Star status, which lets you skip the rental counter and get access to a wider selection of vehicles. When you use it to pay the application fee for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, Capital One will reimburse you.

Best mid-level card: Chase Sapphire Preferred ® Card

The Chase Sapphire Preferred offers both robust earnings on travel and a useful suite of travel protections. Plus, Chase's dozen-plus transfer partners offer flexibility in travel redemptions.

Why we like it: If you're looking for a way to maximize your travel rewards without paying a steep annual fee, look no further than the Chase Sapphire Preferred ® Card . The card offers an impressive welcome bonus and several opportunities to earn bonus points on your everyday spending. Annual perks include a $50 credit toward hotel stays booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards, a 10% points bonus on your spending throughout the year and benefits with partners like Lyft, DoorDash, Instacart, and Peloton.

The card offers flexible redemption options, including cash back, but you'll get 25% more value if you use your points to book travel through Chase. Alternatively, you can transfer your rewards to one of the card issuer's airline or hotel rewards program partners and potentially squeeze more value out of your points.

Best for lounge access: The Platinum Card® from American Express

Why we like this card.

The Platinum Card® from American Express charges an annual fee that some will find hard to stomach. But if you're a frequent flyer, it may well become your favorite travel companion. The card offers access to more airport lounge networks than any other credit card. At larger airports, you may even have your pick among several lounge options.

The card also comes packed with more than $1,500 in annual travel and lifestyle credits, elite status with select hotel and car rental rewards programs and many other perks that touch just about every aspect of your travel experience. That said, many of the credits are doled out in increments and are for specific vendors, making them harder to redeem.

Pro tip: Credits only have value if you use them in your daily life. If a credit or benefit is causing you to make purchases you don't usually make, you might want to reconsider whether it is worth it for you.

Best for airline loyalists: United SM Explorer Card

The United Explorer card makes sense if you are one of the over 140 million passengers that flew United last year.

Why we like it: If you like the idea of enjoying rewards and perks with an airline rather than general travel rewards and benefits, you can't go wrong with the United Explorer Card . The card offers a sizable welcome bonus and a few different bonus rewards categories, and with a strong domestic and international presence, you'll have plenty of options when it comes to redeeming your miles for award flights.

You'll get some standard airline card benefits, such as a free checked bag for you and a companion, priority boarding, and a discount on select inflight purchases. But you'll also get some perks that most mid-tier airline cards don't offer, including expanded access to Saver award tickets, premier upgrade eligibility on award tickets, two one-time passes to the United Club lounge each year, and an application fee credit toward Global Entry or TSA PreCheck.

Best for hotel loyalists: IHG One Rewards Premier Card

The IHG One Rewards Card offers a free night upon card renewal along with a slew of other benefits, making it well worth the modest annual fee

Why we like it: If you want to focus your efforts on earning free hotel stays, the IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card offers an impressive array of benefits. The card makes it easy to earn points quickly, though it also requires a lot of points to get free stays with IHG.

Where it really shines, though, is in its perks, which offer value that far outweighs the card's modest annual fee. You'll get a free night reward each year worth up to 40,000 points, plus a $100 statement credit and 10,000 bonus points if you spend $20,000 in a calendar year. When you stay at IHG hotels, you'll enjoy Platinum Elite status, which includes perks like the fourth night free on award bookings, reward night discounts, complimentary upgrades, and a welcome amenity. You'll also get an application fee credit toward Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, or NEXUS.

Best $0 annual fee card: Bilt Mastercard

The Bilt Mastercard not only has no annual fee, it has a robust set of travel transfer partners. Even better, it lets you earn rewards for paying rent.

Why we like it: While it technically isn't billed as a travel credit card, the Bilt Mastercard®—the only credit card that offers rewards on rent payments—offers travel benefits that are hard to ignore. Most importantly, the card allows you to transfer your points to several airline and hotel loyalty programs, a rare feature for a travel card with no annual fee. You'll also pay no foreign transaction fees and get a few trip protections, including trip cancellation and interruption reimbursement, trip delay protection and auto rental collision damage waiver.

If your vacation plans stretch farther than your budget, the VentureOne has an extended 0% APR period on purchases so you can enjoy the sun without getting burned with interest.

Most travel credit cards don't offer introductory 0% APR promotions, but if that feature is a top priority and you don't want a cash-back card, the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card may be worth a look.

The card offers an introductory 0% APR promotion on both purchases and balance transfers, giving you plenty of time to pay off a large chunk or all of a significant purchase or high-interest debt from another card.

The card's rewards rate isn't very exciting, but it does offer flexible travel redemption options, including access to transfer partners.

Best for earning on travel: U.S. Bank Altitude Connect

If cash back is your preference, the U.S. Bank Altitude Connect has a robust rewards rate on travel purchases plus a selection of perks unusual for a sub-$100 annual fee card.

Interestingly enough, many travel credit cards don't offer great rewards on travel spending unless you're booking through the card issuer's travel portal. If you want a card that offers best-in-class rewards on all of your travel spending, the U.S. Bank Altitude® Connect Visa Signature® Card is your best bet.

The card also offers great rewards on other everyday spending categories, along with four free visits to Priority Pass lounges each year, an application fee credit toward Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, and an annual bonus when you use your card to pay for an eligible streaming service.

The Credit One Wander card flies under the radar but is worth a look for its strong earnings on travel, dining and gas in addition to its more lenient credit score requirements.

Why we like it: You typically need good or excellent credit to qualify for one of the best travel credit cards, but if you're not quite there yet, the Credit One Bank Wander® Card should be on your radar. The card offers great rewards on select travel purchases and other everyday spending.

Points can be redeemed in a variety of ways, but to get a consistent redemption rate, statement credits are your best option.

Best for credit building: Capital One Quicksilver Secured Card

You aren't out of options if you need to build your credit score before getting a standard travel card. The Capital One Quicksilver Secured Card is a rewarding option while you get on track.

Why we like it : If you're looking to build or rebuild, you'll be hard-pressed to get approved for a true travel credit card. However, the Capital One Quicksilver Secured Cash Rewards Credit Card can be a solid alternative until you have the chance to establish a good credit score.

The card doesn't charge foreign transaction fees, making it a good choice for international travel, and you'll earn a solid rewards rate on every purchase you make. While you need to make a security deposit equal to your desired credit limit when you get started, you don't have to wait to close your account to get your money back. With responsible use, you can start earning unsecured credit line increases after six months, and you can also qualify for an upgrade to an unsecured Quicksilver card down the road, at which point you'll get a deposit refund.

Our methodology

The Fortune Recommends TM team analyzed more than 50 travel credit cards across various issuers to come up with the top picks.

Here are the key elements we ranked each card by:

  • Annual fee: Some card issuers require cardholders to pay an annual fee for cards with rewards and extra features or benefits. For most of our rankings, we rated cards with lower or zero-dollar annual fees higher.
  • Rewards: Travel cards typically provide rewards in the form of points or miles. For some rankings, we rated cards with better rewards rates higher on our list.
  • Insurance and protections: When you use your card to make purchases, you may be eligible for different types of protections on those purchases. Some cards offer insurance on travel-related expenses, like trip cancellation insurance, baggage delay insurance, trip delay reimbursement, and more. Some cards also provide non-travel-related reimbursements like cell phone protection. For some rankings, we rated cards higher based on the number of protections they offered.
  • Welcome bonus: When you sign up for a new credit card, you may be eligible for a one-time welcome bonus in the form of points or miles. You’ll need to spend a certain amount within a few months of card opening to earn the bonus. We ranked cards with higher bonuses and lower spending requirements higher on our list.
  • Perks: Travel credit cards may offer a variety of perks—like statement credits for TSA PreCheck, airport lounge access, a free checked bag, and more. We rated cards with more perks higher for some of our rankings.
  • Foreign transaction fees: Some cards charge a flat rate on purchases when you use your card abroad. We rated cards with no foreign transaction fees higher.

How do travel credit cards work?

Unlike cash-back rewards, which tend to work the same regardless of the card issuer, travel rewards can get complicated quickly. Ultimately, your redemption options and the value of your points and miles will vary depending on the rewards program.

Flexible travel rewards

Flexible travel rewards credit cards offer points or miles through the card issuer's proprietary rewards program. Some examples include Chase Ultimate Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards, Citi ThankYou Rewards, and Capital One Miles.

With flexible travel rewards, you'll typically get several redemption options, and your rewards are worth a set amount — usually between 0.5 cents and 1.5 cents apiece — depending on how you redeem them. Travel redemptions typically get more value, but that can vary by program.

Many of these programs also allow you to transfer your points to airline and hotel loyalty programs, giving you access to more dynamic redemptions. If you're savvy enough, you could get more value with a transfer partner than if you were to redeem through the card issuer's rewards program.

Airline rewards

Airline miles , or points in some cases, are designed primarily to help you earn award flights with your favorite airline, such as United, Delta , or Southwest. But unlike general points or miles, airline rewards typically don't have a set value.

In some cases, the number of points or miles required for a flight may be linked to the cash value of the ticket, but they may be unrelated. As a result, the value of your rewards will vary based on your flight dates, itinerary, cabin choice, and other factors.

In some cases, you may be able to redeem your airline rewards in other ways, but you typically won't get as much value that way.

Hotel rewards

Hotel points allow you to book free hotel stays with a single hotel chain, such as IHG, Hilton, or Marriott. Like airline rewards, hotel points have dynamic value, so your redemption rate will vary based on your destination, the property, your stay dates, and other variables.

Hotel loyalty programs may also allow you to redeem your rewards in other ways, but it's generally best to stick to free nights.

Should you pick a travel credit card?

If you frequently travel or you're looking for opportunities to travel more in the future, a travel credit card can make it easier to earn free or discounted flights, hotel stays, rental cars, and more.

What's more, some of the top travel credit cards also offer perks that can save you more money or give you a better overall experience at the airport, in flight, or throughout your trip.

That said, most travel credit cards don't offer as much redemption flexibility as cash-back credit cards. If you're not sure you want to go all in on travel rewards, a cash-back credit card may be a better choice.

Also, most of the top travel credit cards charge an annual fee. While many of them make it easy to offset that cost with rewards and perks, the fee is still an out-of-pocket cost. If you're on a tight budget or you're generally fee-averse, think carefully about whether you can afford that yearly cost and make sure you can get enough value from a card to make its annual fee worthwhile.

How to choose the best travel credit card

With so many different options available, there's no single travel credit card that's best suited for all travelers. To determine which one is best for you, you'll want to think about your travel habits, spending profile, and general preferences.

Travel habits

Consumers who travel frequently may benefit more from a premium travel card that offers a broad range of perks, while more casual travelers may be better off with a mid-tier or no-annual-fee travel card.

If you're loyal to a specific airline or hotel chain, it could make sense to get an airline or hotel credit card, but if you don't want to be tied down to a single brand, a general travel card might be the right move.

You'll also want to think about how you travel and which travel card benefits would give you the best experience. For example, if your home airport has one or more airport lounges, it can make sense to get a card that offers lounge access.

Spending profile

Most travel credit cards offer tiered rewards, meaning you'll earn bonus rewards on certain spending categories. If you spend a lot in certain areas of your budget, try to find a card that will reward you more for those purchases.

However, if you don't spend a lot in any single category or you don't want to earn a low rewards rate on most of your spending, consider a card that offers a high, flat rewards rate on everything.

General preferences

Consider other features you're looking for in a travel credit card. Options may include transfer partners, straightforward benefits, redemption options, 0% APR promotions, and more.

As you research and compare travel credit cards, familiarize yourself with all of their benefits to determine which one feels like the best fit based on your needs and preferences.

Frequently asked questions

Which card is better for international travel.

Generally speaking, you'll want a credit card that doesn't charge a foreign transaction fee. With cards that do charge this fee, you'll typically pay an extra 3% on all of your purchases made abroad.

Additionally, Visa and Mastercard credit cards tend to be better for international travel because they're more widely accepted than American Express and Discover credit cards. If you have an Amex or Discover card, consider bringing a Visa or Mastercard as a backup.

Is Visa or Mastercard better for travel?

Mastercard boasts acceptance in more than 210 countries, while Visa says it operates in more than 200 countries. So, if you're traveling to a country that's off the beaten path, so to speak, Mastercard may be a better choice. But for most major international destinations, you're likely fine with either Visa or Mastercard.

What is the best credit card to accumulate travel miles?

Miles have historically been associated with airline frequent flyer programs, but some card issuers, including Capital One and Discover, use the miles nomenclature for their rewards currency.

With that said, the best miles credit card for you depends on your travel habits and preferences. If you want to earn miles with a particular airline, check out that airline's co-branded credit cards to see which one offers the best fit. If you want more general rewards, consider a card that offers miles or points with more flexible redemption options.

Frontier Announces New Domestic Summer Routes From Dallas to Philadelphia

Frontier’s New Routes for Summer 2024

Final thoughts.

We may be compensated when you click on product links, such as credit cards, from one or more of our advertising partners. Terms apply to the offers below. See our Advertising Policy for more about our partners, how we make money, and our rating methodology. Opinions and recommendations are ours alone.

Starting this summer, Frontier Airlines is launching new nonstop flights to 12 airports across the U.S.

These new routes span from the East Coast to the West Coast, with flights taking off for the first time in June and July. If you are looking for some low-cost flights, this is great news.

Frontier Airlines is expanding operations to 12 new airports in June and July.

“As consumers look to take to the skies this summer for leisure or business travel, we’re thrilled to further expand our route map from coast to coast. More destinations from more airports means Frontier Airlines can provide ‘Low Fares Done Right’ to even more customers during the busy summer travel season.” Josh Flyr, Vice President of Network and Operations Design

With fares starting at $19 (if purchased by Wednesday, April 10, at 11:59 p.m. ET), now may be the time to book some summer travel.

These new routes are in addition to its first-ever New York-JFK routes announced last month, so needless to say, Frontier is planning on having a busy summer.

If you want a little bit more luxury on your next Frontier Airlines flight, keep an eye out for its UpFront Plus Seat option, which gives travelers access to an empty middle seat.

Frontier Airlines has been busy lately, adding new routes to and from New York, introducing UpFront Plus Seats, and now announcing new routes to 12 new airports. Having a low-cost option to popular destinations is always welcome, as the new services will (hopefully) drive down prices and keep airlines competitive with their offerings.

Exciting new airline routes from March 2024 and beyond

Zach Griff

The airline network planners closed out the first quarter of 2024 with a bang.

Most major U.S. carriers made at least one network announcement in March, and some, like JetBlue Airways and Spirit Airlines, made much more sweeping changes to their route maps.

You'll catch all of the exciting route news — including all the new flights and the ones that won't survive another season — below.

Alaska Airlines

Alaska added just one new route, but that didn't stop the carrier from making headlines. The airline is adding service from Las Vegas to California's Sonoma County.

Though you might not think much of this 454-mile route, Alaska is going up against upstart Avelo Airlines in this market. Alaska is no stranger to a turf war, so it's possible that the airline's expansion is aimed at curbing Avelo's growth in Santa Rosa, California.

  • Alaska responds to Avelo's Sonoma growth, adds new Las Vegas route

American Airlines

American didn't actually unveil any new routes or cut any flights, but it did make two noteworthy network changes.

The first is that the airline's route from New York to Rome will be upgauged to the Boeing 777-300ER during the peak summer season. This brings more premium capacity to this already popular route, so flyers might have a better shot of finding award or upgrade availability.

Also in New York, American will begin stationing the Boeing 787 Dreamliner at its John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) hub. The carrier will fly from JFK to India using the 787 beginning later this year.

  • American upgrades NYC-to-Rome route with first class
  • American debuts Boeing 787 Dreamliners in New York for the first time

Avelo Airlines

Avelo continues to grow by adding new lines and dots to its route map. The carrier added three new routes from its base at New Haven, Connecticut, as well as its first-ever service to Lakeland, Florida — an airport that hasn't seen commercial service in 12 years.

Lakeland sits between Tampa and Orlando and is seen as a strategic move by Avelo to diversify its Florida portfolio.

  • Avelo gives Florida's Lakeland airport its first commercial airline service in 12 years
  • Avelo to launch 3 more New Haven routes, first service to home city

Breeze Airways

Breeze had a big month that didn't just focus on new routes. The airline launched a cobranded credit card, began a revamp of its frequent flyer program and also added five new cities to its network, including Bangor, Maine, and Dallas-Fort Worth.

  • Breeze Airways launches cobranded credit card, adds 5 new cities, plans loyalty program revamp

Delta Air Lines

capital one travel flight rewards

March wasn't a great month for Delta's network. The airline shaved a handful of flights from its Los Angeles schedule, including service to London; Bozeman, Montana; and Vail, Colorado. Delta also ended its point-to-point experiment in New York's Westchester County, where it flew to Orlando and West Palm Beach, Florida.

Delta did add one new flight, though — a regional connection between Detroit and Fort Wayne, Indiana.

  • Delta cuts 3 routes from Los Angeles, adds new regional flight from Detroit
  • Delta slashes 4 routes, including LA-London, Westchester experiment

Frontier Airlines

Frontier made headlines again for a big expansion in the New York area. The Denver-based carrier is returning to Newark in June, and it'll also open a new outstation at JFK.

Frontier is launching flights from these airports to San Juan, Puerto Rico. It wasn't immediately clear how Frontier was able to get slots at the congested JFK airport.

  • Frontier to launch JFK service, return to Newark in June

JetBlue Airways

Without the Spirit merger, JetBlue began plotting its path to profitability with a major route announcement. The update sees JetBlue pulling out of four cities and cutting a large chunk of short-haul routes from Los Angeles, effectively ending the carrier's quest to turn LAX into a West Coast focus city, or hub, of sorts.

This likely isn't the only network announcement coming from JetBlue, as industry insiders expect the carrier to make further tweaks to its route map in the coming weeks.

Silver Airways

Silver Airways is scrapping a route before it even begins.

The carrier filed plans to cut service between Key West and Fort Myers in Florida before service was even supposed to commence in April, Cirium schedules show. This route was just announced in February.

Spirit Airlines

Spirit Airlines is also trying to turn itself around, especially now that the JetBlue merger is officially dead. The airline has been busy tweaking its network, and March saw some more noteworthy changes.

This includes adding nine new routes — Boston; Portland, Oregon; and Salt Lake City are the big winners. Furthermore, the airline cut 13 routes just a few days after a big expansion.

Southwest Airlines

Southwest extended its schedule through the peak winter holiday season, and as part of that, made some network adjustments.

This includes cutting service between Los Angeles and Hawaii (which is expected to resume in the coming years, according to a carrier spokesperson), as well as adding three new seasonal flights.

Southwest is also working on technology to help it offer red-eye flights for the first time in its history.

United Airlines

United's network planners are among the busiest teams at the airline. The carrier debuted three splashy new routes, including its first-ever service to Marrakech, Morocco; Medellin, Colombia; and Cebu, Philippines.

That last route will be operated by a Boeing 737 from Tokyo, and it'll be timed perfectly with connections from the U.S. mainland.

Closer to home, United also filed plans to connect its Washington, D.C., hub at Dulles International Airport (IAD) with Mobile, Alabama — a big win for locals based in Mobile.

Gol Airlines

Gol Airlines, which is based in Brazil, will connect Orlando with Fortaleza beginning in June with once-weekly flights.

This 3,604-mile service will be operated by a Boeing 737 MAX, and at nearly 8 1/2 hours, this represents one of the longest (and most uncomfortable) routes operated by a MAX worldwide.

Hainan Airlines

If Hainan gets its way, the carrier will launch the first new route from the U.S. to China since the pandemic began.

The Haikou, China-based airline proposed to the U.S. Department of Transportation that it launch flights between Seattle and Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport (CKG).

We're still waiting on the final ruling, and we'll report back when it's issued.

Porter Airlines

Porter continues to grow its network with new routes from Los Angeles and San Francisco to Montreal.

Porter will operate each of these routes with its brand-new Embraer E195-E2 jets, which seat 132 passengers in a 2-2 configuration.

Norse Atlantic Airways

Transatlantic low-cost carrier Norse Atlantic announced that it would connect London Gatwick Airport (LGW) with Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) in Las Vegas. This three-times-weekly flight kicks off in September and will be operated by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

As an Easter egg, Norse is calling this Flight 777, in a nod to Vegas' famous lucky numbers.

Starlux Airlines

Taiwanese luxury carrier Starlux announced that it would begin flights to Seattle in August. Starlux will operate an Airbus A350-900 in the market.

Seattle represents the carrier's third U.S. destination since launching flights to Los Angeles and San Francisco last year.

Rumors have it that Starlux will now turn its eyes to the East Coast as it considers future expansion from Taipei.

Volaris, the budget Mexican carrier, filed plans to scrap service between Mexico City and Sacramento.

No other airline flies between these cities, so travelers will now need to find connecting options on this route.
