Meet Your Guide in Piazza del Duomo

The adventure begins in Piazza del Duomo. Home to the Duomo of Florence, Baptistery of Saint John, and Giotto's Bell Tower, the square is the heart of Florentine history. Your guide will describe the importance of the complex as you head towards the cathedral entrance, where your skip-the-line tickets will allow you to start exploring without the usual long wait.

Completed in 1436, the great Gothic Cathedral is one of the world's most unique and impressive churches. Originally clad in the medieval wooden style, the church's façade was deemed obsolete within decades of its opening. Your guide will tell fascinating stories about the immense scandal involving the Medici family, Popes, and famous architects that led to an incomplete façade for centuries. Listen to the saga and appreciate the modern façade of white, green, and red marble that adorns the dome today.

Within the vast interior of the church, you'll first be struck by the huge frescoes of the Last Judgement that cover the cupola's ceiling. You'll see these impressive paintings up close when you have ascended to the top of the dome. Other parts of the cathedral are more simple such as the white colors of the nave symbolizing piety and religious devotion.

After you've discovered the main part of the Duomo, it's time to visit the places the general public don't get to see. First, you'll enter the exclusive Circular Room, where the 16th-century statues that used to be part of the cathedral's façade are stored. Next you'll visit the secret terraces that were closed off to the public for hundreds of years, and many Florentines never even knew they existed! From here, you'll get a close-up view of the details that make the Duomo such an impressive piece of architecture. And of course, you'll also get a tremendous view of the city below.

Brunelleschi's Dome

During the 14th and 15th centuries, Florentine architects had a major issue to solve. They had to enclose the top of their cathedral without the use of the flying buttresses that had become commonplace in European construction. In Florence, the buttresses were seen as horribly ugly and therefore banned from being used in the city.

With this handicap and the lack of modern engineering tools, Filippo Brunelleschi's dome becomes even more impressive. Standing nearly 500 feet in the air, and constructed of layers of dome structures, you'll learn the story how the dome came to be.

Finally, you'll climb to the top of the dome with your expert guide. As you near the top of the cupola, admire the frescoes across the dome ceiling. Painted by Giorgio Vasari beginning in 1568 and completed by Federico Zuccari a decade later, it's natural to compare these frescoes to Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel.

Accessed via the exclusive Circular Room and secret terraces—which are only available as part of this tour—the dome climb is a truly unforgettable experience. Lots of steps

Anna our tour guide was really good. Unfortunately our tour was changed and we only got the tour with the guide of the Duomo climb. Once we entered the stairs of the dome we no longer could hear Anna's comments. The view was spectacular!!!!!! We did make use of the museum, baptistry and underground passes that came with the ticket on later days, since most of our tour was cancelled on our chosen day. Highly recommend if you're willing to climb up a lot of stairs.

With so much demand, these sites can become crowded, particularly in the summer months.

Luckily, on our most exclusive Florence tour, you won't have to deal with any of that. Combining careful timing, skip-the-line entry, and special access, you'll cross velvet ropes to get up close and personal with the two giants of Florence: David and the Duomo.

Beat the crowds with an early morning or late afternoon tour at the Accademia Gallery.

Your David and Duomo tour is strategically timed to avoid the crowds, starting early with a reservation for the first entrance of the day at the Accademia Gallery or in the afternoon after the masses have departed. This way, you’ll have a little more space to explore not just Michelangelo’s David, but also his unfinished Slaves statues and several other priceless works often overlooked by visitors. With a small group of just 18 people or fewer and headsets for every guest, your Accademia tour will be intimate and your guide easy to interact with.

After the Accademia, you'll head through the Piazza del Duomo where you'll gaze upon the beautiful copper-plated doors of the Florence Baptistery. Soak up the atmosphere and familiarize yourself with the awe-inspiring sights surrounding the piazza before making your way to the ultimate highlight of this VIP experience.

The final leg of your visit will be a skip-the-line Duomo tour, where special access will give you more space than the average visitor. The floor of the Duomo has recently been roped off, and while normal visitors circulate on paths around the perimeter of the cathedral, you’ll be ushered through the velvet ropes to wander the space as you wish, getting closer to the details.

Please note: only the morning tour will include a brief visit to the Florence cathedral, while the afternoon tour will enjoy a spectacular view of the cathedral's interior from above as you climb the famous dome.

The cherry on top comes as you ascend to the Duomo’s rooftop terrace for incredible views and an up-close view of Brunelleschi’s enormous dome—the largest brick dome in the world. Due to the incredibly exclusive level of access to this hidden space (very few visitors even know the terrace exists!), you'll have it practically to yourself, with a maximum of just two small tour groups visiting at the same time. Your Florence Duomo tour officially ends here, but from this level of the building, you’ll also have access to a special door from which you can climb to the top of the dome (if you wish) without waiting in line for hours down below.

The views from the terrace are fantastic for examining the Dome itself up close, but from the top of the dome, you’ll see not just Florence, but far beyond into Tuscany. Give yourself some time to soak up the red roofs and rolling hills; it will be a long time before you see another view quite like this.

When you depart, you will have gained a deeper understanding and appreciation of Florence's two most iconic attractions, and how each of them fits into the city's centuries of history.

The Accademia visit focused on the works of Michelangelo and was a great lead up to the main event of David. The guide provided useful information and was able to answer our questions. The Duomo was amazing and we really enjoyed the time on the terrace and climb up to the top of the dome. The views are simply stunning! The tickets also allowed up to spend more time in the church, the museum, and crypts for up to 72-hours, which was great. We really enjoyed this tour and would recommend it to anyone wanting to see David and visit the Duomo.

It was a well designed tour. The booking process was easy and the subject matter was excellent. Our tour guide, Claus (sp?), is obviously well educated and passionate about art history, but he was easily distracted and had a lot of trouble staying on topic. He is a nice man but he was very difficult to follow.

History of the Duomo Florence

The Basilica Di Santa Maria Del Fiore more commonly known as the Duomo Cathedral of Florence was one of the most important architectural structures in 14th century Florence. It inspired and ushered in a whole new era of art and engineering.

With its spectacular Renaissance dome constructed by Filippo Brunelleschi and the baptistery directly across the street, Florence’s cathedral towers over the city. The huge Gothic cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria del Fiore was built on the foundations of the 7th-century church of Santa Reparata, the remnants of which may be seen in the crypt.

The Florence Duomo is located in Duomo Square. It was designed by Arnolfo di Cambio, a prominent architect, and sculptor who admired the Gothic style, and building began towards the end of the 13th century. Florentine artists abandoned the Gothic style in favor of the Roman style about the middle of the 14th century. The metalsmith Lorenzo Ghiberti and the artist Filippo Brunelleschi were given the honor of completing Florence Cathedral.

After the Cathedral’s facade was demolished towards the end of the sixteenth century, Emilio de Fabris reconstructed it, made minor changes, and used marble of various colors.

It is sufficient to bring along a light scarf or cardigan and put them on prior to entering the holy areas. We cannot be held responsible for denied entry due to improper dress.

Bulky bags and backpacks are not allowed inside portions of this tour including the Dome. Most catholic churches in Italy require a dress code in order to enter.

For The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence, you are requested to be covered from shoulders to knees (shoulders, chest, stomach and thighs must be all covered by clothing).

It is permissible to wear shorts, provided that they are long enough to cover your thighs and knees. You are also permitted to wear tank tops or spaghetti strap dresses, but you will need to bring with you a garment (shawl, jacket, cardigan) that can cover all the exposed parts between your shoulders and knees when you enter the building.

Our tours run rain or shine, and we have rain ponchos available in our office. We encourage all guests to consult the weather forecast and plan your dress accordingly.

In the summer months, please prepare for the heat by bringing/wearing adequate sun protection, and staying hydrated. Even if you are accustomed to high temperatures, air-conditioning is not always available in Italy.

Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore

The Florence Cathedral or the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore is the main cathedral of Florence, Italy. Its Gothic style construction began in 1296 and was structurally completed by 1436, with the dome engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi. On the outside, the basilica is faced with polychrome marble panels in various shades of pink and green, and are bordered by white. It has an elaborate 19th-century Gothic Revival façade designed by Emilio De Fabris.

Brunelleschi’s Dome

In 1418, there was a public competition announced and held by the Opera del Duomo. It was for the purpose of construction of the dome with a hefty prize of fame and 200 gold florins. Top architects flocked to Florence to present their ideas but ultimately the Opera del Duomo chose Filippo Brunelleschi to be the superintendent of the cupola project. 

Crypt of Santa Reparata

The Crypt of Santa Reparata is a small crypt beneath a cathedral with tombs of notable figures and floors made of patterned mosaics. Being the former cathedral of Florence, Italy, Santa Reparata gets its name from an early virgin martyr who is the co-patron saint of Florence. The Florence Cathedral was actually constructed over it. Its construction was intended to celebrate the victory over Radagaisus on the day of S. Reparata. This happened during the reign of Emperor Honorius (395 – 423).

Baptistry of San Giovanni

The Baptistery of San Giovanni is one of the most important religious buildings in Florence. Dedicated to his patron saint, John the Baptist, it is a characteristic example of the Tuscan Romanesque style, dating all the way back to the 11th century. Although it was initially intended for the liturgical function of baptism, it also acted as the city’s Cathedral in the 11th century.

The Accademia Gallery or the Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze is an art museum located in Florence, Italy. Best known as the home of Michelangelo’s sculpture David, it houses Michelangelo’s sculptures and a large collection of Florentine paintings, mostly from the late Renaissance period of 1300 – 1600. 

Statue of David

David, created in marble between 1501 and 1504 by the Italian maestro Michelangelo is a masterpiece of the Renaissance. It is a 5.17-metre marble statue of David, a Biblical figure and subject that was most favoured in the art of Florence.

Inside Florence's Cathedral, the Duomo

Florence's cathedral stands tall over the city with its magnificent Renaissance dome designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, with the baptistery right across. The cathedral named in honor of Santa Maria del Fiore is a vast Gothic structure built on the site of the 7th century church of Santa Reparata , the remains of which can be seen in the crypt.

The cathedral was begun at the end of the 13th century by Arnolfo di Cambio , and the dome, which dominates the exterior, was added in the 15th century on a design of Filippo Brunelleschi . A statue to each of these important architects can be found outside to the right of the cathedral, both admiring their work for the rest of eternity. Can you imagine it took two centuries for the cathedral to be deemed finished?

Did you know?

Florence's cathedral is the 4th largest in the world, after St. Peter's in Rome, St. Paul's in London and the Duomo in Milan.

The church was consecrated as soon as the dome was in place although the façade (front of the church) was only half finished by then. It was considered just a decoration, and thus remained unfinished up until the 19th century. At that point, it was actually redone by the likes of the time and finally finished - which is what you see today, in the top photo.

The exterior is covered in a decorative mix of pink, white and green marble. The interior, by contrast, is pretty stark and plain but quite enjoyable on warm summer days since the temperature inside tends to be cooler. The mosaic pavements are certainly its main attraction within, which you can see in the photo above, aren't they spectacular? They look like mosaic carpets.

Please note the clock above the entrance on the inside of the church. It was designed in 1443 by Paolo Uccello in accordance with the ora italica , where the 24th hour of the day ended at sunset... and it still works!

The biggest artwork within the cathedral is Giorgio Vasari 's frescoes of the Last Judgment (1572-9): they were designed by Vasari but painted mostly by his less-talented student Federico Zuccari by 1579.

You should also pay attention to the 3 frescoes alongside the left nave of the cathedral: Dante Before the City of Florence by Domenico di Michelino (1465) which is especially interesting because it shows us, apart from scenes of the Divine Comedy, a view on Florence in 1465, a Florence such as Dante himself could not have seen in his time; the Funerary Monument to Sir John Hawkwood by Paolo Uccello (1436, the one on the left below) and the Equestrian statue of Niccolò da Tolentino by Andrea del Castagno (1456, the one on the right). Both frescoes portray the condottieri as heroic figures riding triumphantly. Both painters had problems when applying in painting the new rules of perspective to foreshortening: they used two unifying points, one for the horse and one for the pedestal, instead a single unifying point.

Visiting the cathedral: do you need tickets for Duomo or is it free?

No, entrance is free! You do have to buy the single "Grande Museo del Duomo" pass to visit the other monuments in Piazza del Duomo (climb up the Dome and the bell tower, the Baptistery and the museum).

For this reason, you'll at times find a long line to get in into the cathedral. Don't worry, the line moves pretty quickly! But in an effort to reduce the line, the cathedral administration is trying to increase the number of visitors allowed at any one time into the church as long as noise level remains low. The solution has been to require any group of over 4 visitors to rent either the radio or audio guides (cost is 2-2,50 euro per person) so that the level of noise inside the church remains low and larger amounts of people can be allowed inside at any one time. Large groups of students will receive 50% discount on the cost of the audio guide. If you're with a tour group, you'll likely already have the earphones and don't have to worry about this recent change.
