About the Business

Business owner information

Photo of Sandy M.

Business Owner

Journey Travel and Tours is the premier corporate and leisure travel agency in the Wenatchee Valley. Opened in 1999 as Cascade Travel of Wenatchee in the basement of a house, the agency, under a new name and Sandy Mathews's ownership, relocated to an antique house-turned-office space in Mission Square, and then eventually to our current location at 212 N. Chelan, Wenatchee. Sandy has owned an agency since 1991 and has seen many changes take place in the industry during that time. Although many of these changes have negatively impacted travel agencies, Sandy has always remained optimistic about the future of agencies that are committed to serving their clients. "We are committed to giving our clients excellent service that they cannot receive over the internet or even at other agencies," Sandy notes. "We deliver tickets to our corporate clients and are willing to drive or hand-deliver them to clients all over the valley who cannot come to Wenatchee to pick them up. In addition to offering superior service, we are committed to finding the lowest fares available for our clients within the parameters that their schedules dictate. We hope people recognize the differences between us and the other agencies as they consider making their travel plans in the future." Please call or come in to plan your next trip or to ask any travel-related questions. …

Understanding the Distinction: Travel, Trip, and Journey Explained

Ever find yourself scratching your head over when to use ‘travel’, ‘trip’, or ‘journey’? Me too. In fact, these terms are commonly misused by even the most well-traveled folks among us.

Table of Contents

As an English language aficionado and travel enthusiast, I dove deep into linguistic resources to clear up this confusion once and for all. This blog will guide you through the nuances of these three words , helping you navigate your way to flawless English usage in any travel context .

Ready for departure?

Key Takeaways

  • Travel refers to going to a place, especially far away.
  • Trip involves traveling from one place to another, usually for a short period of time.
  • Journey implies traveling from one place to another without necessarily returning.
  • Proper usage of these terms is essential in effectively conveying our experiences.

Definition and Differences between Travel, Trip, and Journey

Travel is a verb that means going to a place, especially far away, while trip refers to the process of traveling from one place to another, usually for a short time. Journey, on the other hand, implies traveling from one place to another without necessarily returning.

Travel as a verb meaning to go to a place, especially far away

Travel, as a verb, emphasizes the act of moving from one location to another. This movement often involves significant distance between the two points. For instance, you might say you are traveling to Europe or Asia from America – places that are undoubtedly quite far from each other.

Notably, travel doesn’t always require a return trip; it merely notes the action of going somewhere far . Even voyages into space can be considered travel! So next time you utter “I love to travel,” note that this phrase speaks volumes about your passion for exploring distant destinations and embracing new experiences on a broader geographic scale .

Trip as the process of traveling from one place to another, usually for a short time

When we talk about a trip, we’re referring to the act of traveling from one place to another. It’s usually for a short period of time and involves moving between different locations .

Think of it as going on a vacation or taking a quick getaway. A trip can be as short as a day or extend over several days, but it generally doesn’t involve staying in one place for an extended period.

So whether you’re heading out on a road trip with friends or catching a flight to explore new cities, remember that a trip is all about the process of getting from point A to point B , enjoying the journey along the way.

Journey as traveling from one place to another, not necessarily returning

A journey is all about the experience of traveling from one place to another, without the expectation of returning . It can be a long and exciting adventure, with multiple destinations along the way.

Unlike a trip or travel, which often involves going somewhere and then coming back, a journey implies forward movement and exploration . It’s like embarking on a voyage of discovery, where you’re eager to see what lies ahead and open to new experiences.

Whether it’s backpacking through Europe or sailing around the world, a journey offers endless possibilities for exploration and self-discovery .

Common Uses and Examples of Travel, Trip, and Journey

– Travel: “I love traveling to different countries , experiencing new cultures and exploring exotic destinations.

– Trip: “We took a weekend trip to the beach, enjoying sun-kissed days and relaxing by the seaside.”

– Journey: “His journey across the desert was filled with challenges and self-discovery as he embarked on a soul-searching adventure.”

Travel: “I love to travel to different countries.”

I absolutely adore exploring different countries . Experiencing new cultures, trying unique cuisines , and immersing myself in unfamiliar landscapes is what makes travel so thrilling for me.

Whether it’s wandering through ancient ruins in Greece or hiking through the vibrant jungles of Costa Rica, I find immense joy in venturing beyond my comfort zone and discovering all that the world has to offer.

Travel opens my eyes to different perspectives and allows me to create lasting memories that I cherish forever.

Trip: “We went on a business trip to New York.”

Last week, I had the opportunity to go on a business trip to New York . It was an exciting experience that allowed me to explore the bustling city and meet with important clients . During the trip, we visited various companies , attended conferences , and even had some time to enjoy the sights and sounds of New York.

Being able to immerse myself in a different environment for a short period of time was both refreshing and educational. Overall, it was a successful trip that helped us strengthen our professional relationships and achieve our business goals.

Journey: “His journey around the world took him three years.”

I embarked on a three-year journey around the world, exploring new cultures and experiencing incredible adventures along the way. From bustling cities to remote villages, my journey allowed me to immerse myself in different landscapes and meet fascinating people from all walks of life.

It was a transformative experience that broadened my horizons and shaped my perspective on the world.

Clarifying Misuses of Travel, Trip, and Journey

Many people mistakenly use the term “travel” for short distances, but it should be reserved for going to faraway places. To understand the proper usage of these words, read on!

Incorrect uses of travel: “He traveled to the grocery store.”

Using the word “travel” to describe a short trip to the grocery store is incorrect. Travel usually refers to going to a distant place, especially far away. So, it’s important to use this term appropriately and not for everyday local trips like grocery stores.

Proper uses of the terms: “I traveled to Europe.”

I traveled to Europe for my summer vacation. It was an exciting travel experience filled with new cultures, delicious food, and breathtaking sights. The proper use of the term “travel” in this context refers to going somewhere far away , especially to a different country or continent .

In this case, I embarked on an adventure from my home country to Europe, immersing myself in each destination’s rich history and vibrant atmosphere. Traveling to Europe broadened my horizons and created memories that will last a lifetime.

Understanding the Nuances between Travel, Trip, and Journey

Understanding the Nuances between Travel, Trip, and Journey

Travel, trip, and journey may seem similar, but they each have their own nuances. Read on to delve deeper into the distinctions between these terms and how to use them correctly in your everyday conversations.

Travel focuses on the action of going to a distant place.

Travel allows us to embark on exciting journeys to faraway destinations. It is the act of physically moving from one place to another , often to distant locations . Whether it’s exploring a new country , immersing ourselves in different cultures , or experiencing thrilling adventures , travel is all about the exhilarating action of venturing beyond our comfort zones .

So pack your bags and get ready for an incredible journey filled with unforgettable experiences!

Trip emphasizes the process of traveling and staying in a place.

A trip is all about the journey itself and the experience of being in a specific place . It focuses on the process of traveling from one location to another, while also emphasizing the time spent staying in that particular place.

Whether you’re taking a short weekend trip to a nearby city or embarking on a week-long vacation, a trip is about immersing yourself in new surroundings and enjoying everything that destination has to offer.

Journey implies a longer and more significant travel experience.

When embarking on a journey, you can expect a more extensive and meaningful travel experience . Unlike a simple trip or travel, a journey often involves exploring multiple destinations or pursuing a specific purpose .

It encompasses the idea of venturing into the unknown and embracing new challenges along the way. Whether it’s an epic road trip across several countries or a spiritual pilgrimage to sacred sites, a journey offers an opportunity for personal growth and transformation .

It allows you to immerse yourself in different cultures , navigate unfamiliar terrain, and create lasting memories. So if you’re seeking an adventure that goes beyond mere transportation from point A to point B, set out on a journey that will take you further and leave an indelible mark on your soul.

Conclusion and Importance of Using the Correct Terms

Understanding the distinctions between travel , trip, and journey is crucial in accurately conveying our experiences . By using these terms correctly, we can communicate more effectively and avoid confusion .

So whether we’re embarking on a short trip or a life-changing journey , let’s remember to use the right words to describe our adventures ! Keep exploring and keep traveling!

1. What is the difference between travel, trip, and journey?

Travel refers to the act of going from one place to another, while a trip is a specific instance of traveling for a particular purpose or destination. A journey, on the other hand, implies a longer and more meaningful experience that may involve personal growth or transformation.

2. Can you give examples of each term – travel, trip, and journey?

Sure! Travel can include activities like flying to a different country or taking a road trip across states. A trip could be going on vacation to Disneyland or visiting family over the holidays. And a journey might involve backpacking through Europe for several months or embarking on a spiritual retreat.

3. Is there any overlap between these terms?

Yes, there can be some overlap between these terms depending on context. For example, someone’s “trip” may also be considered their “journey” if it involves self-discovery or exploration. Similarly, long-term travel experiences may encompass both the notions of “travel” and “journey.”

4. How does understanding the distinction between these terms help in communication?

Understanding the distinction between travel, trip, and journey helps in effective communication as it allows us to accurately describe our experiences and intentions when discussing our travels with others. It provides clarity and avoids confusion by using appropriate terminology when sharing stories or making plans involving different types of travel experiences.

6 Excellent Day Trips From San Jose, California

journey travels and tours

  • Destinations
  • United States

With Macintosh computers slowly replacing the apple orchards that once filled the area, San Jose has steadily grown over the past few decades to become the largest city in the Bay Area. While there are plenty of fun things to do in sunny San Jose , California, these excellent day trips will allow you to experience more of Northern California.

While everyone can agree that a day trip is a short excursion that allows you to fall asleep in the same bed where you woke up that morning, further defining a day trip can vary by traveler. As someone who doesn’t like to get up too early, doesn’t want to spend all day in the car, and definitely wants enough time to really enjoy the day trip destination, my recommendations are all within a two-hour drive from downtown San Jose. But, depending on when you start and end your day trip, the traffic in the Bay Area can quickly turn a one-hour drive into a seemingly all-day affair, so take that into consideration when planning your excursions.

Surfers in Santa Cruz, CA.

1. Santa Cruz

As a teenager in the Bay Area, Santa Cruz was always a favorite summertime day trip, because as you travel south from San Francisco’s fairly consistent 60-degree Fahrenheit climate, it’s one of the first beaches where it’s warm enough to get into the water without a wetsuit.

Located about an hour south of downtown San Jose, I recommend heading straight for the beach. Stroll along the sand and watch the surfers ride the waves then explore the shops and restaurants on the Santa Cruz Wharf . Get out on the water by renting a boat, or leave the driving to someone else by booking a fishing excursion, whale and dolphin watching trip, or scenic bay cruise.

And before you leave, be sure to take a ride on the Giant Dipper roller coaster . Now a National Historic Landmark, this nearly 100-year-old wooden roller coaster has appeared in several movies, including Sudden Impact , Dangerous Minds , and The Lost Boys .

Before you head back to San Jose, be sure to fill up on fresh seafood by grabbing dinner at Johnny’s Harborside or Riva Fish House .

Sea Otters near Monterey Peninsula, CA.

2. Monterey Peninsula

Another great coastal day trip from San Jose is the Monterey Peninsula. About 90 minutes south of San Jose, the 12-square-mile piece of land that juts into the Pacific is home to the towns of Monterey, Pacific Grove, and Carmel-by-the-Sea, among others.

Start your day trip to Monterey at the Monterey Bay Aquarium . Once a sardine cannery, you can watch scampering sea otters, pulsing jellyfish, and more than 500 other species in this world-renowned aquarium on the coast. Next, explore the shops along Cannery Row and grab a bite at Lalla Oceanside Grill or the Chart House (and be sure to try abalone, if it’s available).

Sea anemone at Monterey Aquarium, California.

Pro Tip: If you can’t get enough of the cute sea otters at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, here are six great places to see them in the wild, including along the coast adjacent to Cannery Row.

Don’t leave the Monterey Peninsula without touring 17-Mile Drive. Beginning near the aquarium and winding past Instagram-worthy spots like Spanish Bay, China Rock, and the Lone Cypress before it approaches the Pebble Beach Golf Links , it’s easy to see why the route is one of the most scenic drives in the US .

Tallest lighthouse on the West Coast, Pigeon Point Light Station, Pescadero, CA.

3. Pescadero

To circumnavigate redwood-topped mountains, visiting this coastal town due west of San Jose requires traveling a fair distance north or south. So when day-tripping to Pescadero from San Jose, I recommend a circular path that loops through Los Gatos, Santa Cruz, and Half Moon Bay before returning to San Jose on I-280. The total drive time is about two and a half hours, giving you plenty of time to explore.

Start your day trip to Pescadero at the Pigeon Point Light Station . Standing 115 feet tall on a craggy cliff overlooking the ocean, it is the tallest lighthouse on the West Coast. Stretch your legs, watch for wildlife, and breathe in the fresh, salty air by taking a scenic walk along the trails that surround the lighthouse.

Olallieberry Pie at Duarte's Tavern, Pescadero, CA.

Be sure to stop at Duarte’s Tavern for lunch. A Pescadero establishment dating back to 1894, the tavern is now a James Beard Award-winning eatery focused on creating mouthwatering dishes from freshly caught fish and locally grown produce. In fact, many of the ingredients come straight from the restaurant’s garden! No matter what you select for your main meal, be sure to start with a bowl of artichoke soup and finish with a slice of olallieberry pie. (If you haven’t tried an olallieberry before, it’s a little like a blackberry.)

Next, work off some of those delicious calories by heading inland for a little forest bathing under a canopy of old-growth redwoods at Butano State Park . With 40 miles of trails, you can enjoy everything from a guided nature walk to a 1.5-mile hike on the Little Butano Creek Trail to a 5-mile trek on the Jackson Flats Loop. Be certain to take along a good pair of hiking boots, like these Regatta walking boots so you’ll be comfortable.

Pro Tip: To cure a craving for Duarte’s artichoke soup after you’ve returned home, try whipping up a batch yourself with this recipe .

Hanging grapes at the Livermore Valley Vineyard, Livermore, CA.

4. Livermore

While Napa is popular with wine lovers (and a recommendation you may find on other San Jose day trips lists), you won’t see it on mine. Not only is it pushing my two-hour limit from San Jose (especially with traffic), but once you’re in Napa, you will want to slow down, enjoy the amazing scenery, taste the world-class wine, and savor the delicious food without having to get back in the car for the long return trip to San Jose.

But fear not, fellow wine lovers. I have an alternative recommendation!

Home to more than 45 amazing wineries , Livermore is just 45 minutes north of San Jose, so you can be chilling with a chardonnay or sipping a syrah in Livermore well before you’d even arrive in Napa. And the award-winning wines produced in the Livermore Valley are fantastic.

Travelers can typically visit about four wineries during a day of wine tasting. If you only have one day to spend in Livermore wine country, I recommend visiting McGrail Vineyards and Murrieta’s Well , where the delicious wines are accompanied by breathtaking views; Wood Family Vineyards , where the wines are produced by one of the few female vintners in the region; and Mitchell Katz , where the tawny port is better than any dessert you’ll ever eat.

Pro Tip: Before you head to wine country, be sure to brush up on your wine tasting etiquette !

Sustain yourself with a midday bite at the Garre Cafe , where the menu is packed with delicious options from small bites to salads and sandwiches to full entrées. And fuel up with dinner at  Uncle Yu’s at the Vineyard or the First Street Ale House before heading back to San Jose.

Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, CA.

5. San Francisco

With its world-famous Golden Gate Bridge and clanging cable cars, it’s easy to see why San Francisco draws millions of visitors a year. Just an hour north of San Jose (when the traffic gods are smiling on you), there is so much to see and do in San Francisco that it’s impossible to tackle it in one day. However, The Golden City is a fantastic day trip from San Jose for folks who have visited before and want to cross a few specific activities off of their travel bucket list.

From visiting Alcatraz to riding the cable cars and from free activities to hidden gems , you’re sure to discover day trip activities that pique your interest with these amazing articles published at TravelAwaits . And whether you pick a place in San Francisco’s Chinatown or grab a sourdough bread bowl of chowder on Fisherman’s Wharf, be sure to savor the local flavors before calling it a day in the City by the Bay.

Campanile at UC Berkeley.

6. Berkeley

Another urban day trip from San Jose is the college town of Berkeley, about 90 minutes north of San Jose. I recommend starting your day by touring the Cal campus, strolling through the school’s botanical garden , and enjoying the panoramic views from the Campanile (officially named Sather Tower).

Then head down to the marina where you can see the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco skyline in a whole new light from across the bay on a clear day. Drink in the views while dining on delicious seafood at Skates on the Bay or strolling along the waterfront trails.

UC Berkeley botanical garden.

Or head to Fourth Street where you can enjoy perhaps the best pancakes on the planet at Bette’s Oceanview Diner . Whether you order a short stack of buttermilk pancakes or an apple brandy souffle pancake, your taste buds will tell you to purchase a copy of The Pancake Handbook before you leave.

In the surrounding Fourth Street shopping district , you’ll find everything from fashion and beauty products to home goods and specialty stores. One unique experience that may not be available where you live is the Amazon 4-star store, a retail space with a selection of highly rated items (you know, like at least four stars at Amazon.com) that you can explore to discover products you’ll love.

Pro Tip: Here are several other fun things to do in eclectic Berkeley , California.

From quaint coastal towns to wine country and bustling urban areas, these are some of the best day trips from San Jose, California.

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Pinnacles National Park

Pinnacles National Park is a hidden gem just two hours away from San Francisco, offering an enticing blend of rugged landscapes and remarkable wildlife.

Although smaller than some of the other national parks in California , it punches above its weight with breathtaking rock formations sculpted by ancient volcanoes millions of years ago and an array of outdoor activities.

Hike scenic trails, watch for the rare California Condor, and explore the fascinating talus caves. My blog post – Exploring Pinnacles National Park in a Day: What Can You See? – offers a comprehensive guide to make the most of your visit!

Immerse yourself in the wild beauty of Pinnacles National Park to make your next day trip from San Jose unforgettable. Also, don’t forget to stop at the visitor center and buy a souvenir for your memories .

A trip to Pinnacles is one of the best day trips from San Jose to refresh in the wilderness.

2. Muir Woods National Monument – One of the best day trips from San Jose, California

journey travels and tours

Located just an hour and a half from San Jose, Muir Woods National Monument is a must-visit for nature lovers. This beautiful park is home to towering redwoods, and it’s a great place to go for a hike or a picnic.

The grandeur of the redwoods is something that will take your breath away. The tall, large, lush redwood trees soar up into a vivid blue sky.

The branches wave in the wind, and the birds fly across its crown. The woods themselves are so dense – the way the light comes in, it doesn’t shine directly in, it just filters through in pieces.

It’s a different kind of light, and it’s really beautiful. Explore these ancient giants who have stood watch over us since before recorded history began!

The scenery at Muir Woods is simply stunning. With a little sunlight and fresh air to invigorate your soul plus views so breathtaking they’ll make any photographer’s heart skip beats- this spot has it all!

3. The Monterey Bay Aquarium – An escape into another world!

journey travels and tours

If you’re looking for something fun to do with the family, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is a great option for a day tour.

Deep under the sea, a colorful world exists, and if we get a chance to peep into that world for a day, the excitement knows no bound.

If you visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium, you will love watching another world in slow motion through giant glass windows.

One of my favorite exhibits in this aquarium is the 28 feet kelp forest enclosure, which is one of the tallest aquarium exhibits in the whole wide world.

If you want to take a break and relax, then head over to the food area. Sit near a window, order a sandwich and see the boats sailing by.

If you have kids, check out the play area too. Buy a souvenir from the aquarium gift shop. I remember buying a stuffed red octopus that resembles an original Octopus I found in one of the exhibits.

Tip: After exploring the Monterey Bay Aquarium, head towards Cannery Row and enjoy a delicious dinner at an open-air patio!

You can also listen to a Self-Guided Audio Tour while exploring the historic sites along Cannery Row where John Steinbeck was inspired.

Travel Tip : There are plenty of ways to enjoy a beautiful day in Monterey! Read my Monterey travel guide about  the Top things to do in Monterey .

4. Napa Valley and its scenic drives – Enjoy the luxury!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Napa Valley

Wine lovers rejoice! Napa Valley has some of the world’s best wines. It is an ideal destination for those who want to tour various vineyards while sampling wines at various tasting rooms.

The scenery is just as amazing as the wine in Napa Valley. Also, go for a scenic drive to enjoy while you sip on some delicious wine.

A drive through the Silverado trail is my favorite. This scenic route winds through the heart of Napa Valley .

You’ll find winding roads that lead through picturesque vineyards and rolling hills. You can also cruise through the back roads of Calistoga and Spring Mountain and visit the 3.4 million-year-old Petrified forest .

Walk among majestic petrified redwood giants and step back in time. You can also choose to explore the back roads of Coombsville AVA (AVA stands for American Viticultural Area), a quick scenic drive.

This is one of the most unexplored regions of the valley where you can enjoy a slower pace and a taste of country life.

Tip: Autumn is the best time to visit the wine country. I especially love seeing the spectacular fall colors in Napa Valley .

Whether it’s for a week, a day, a glass or a meal – when the time is right, experience the Napa Valley Spirit for yourself. Visit Napa Valley

5. Marin Headlands – A scenic escape!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Golden Gate Bridge, Marin Headlands

If you’re looking for a day trip with incredible views, consider exploring Marin Headlands. This area is located just north of the Golden Gate Bridge and offers stunning vistas of the Bay Area.

You can explore the area by hiking or cycling, and there are also plenty of places to stop for a picnic lunch.

6. Capitola – A quirky escape!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Capitola

Capitola is a cheery beach with candy-colored houses. It is the oldest seaside resort town in California.

If you are looking for a picturesque, quaint, and relaxing vacation destination then Capitola village fits just perfectly.

I enjoyed a leisurely walk at the Capitola wharf and witnessed a stunning sunset. I often feel that a long, wandering walk is the best way to imbibe the sights, sounds, and smells around us.

You can go fishing from Capitola Wharf (no fishing permit required when fishing off the pier). Also, look out for the frequent flowers left on the wharf’s railing that add an additional pop of color to the vibrant village scene.

I also loved the beautiful murals sprinkled in and around the Capitola village and the wharf. I love the way murals revitalize public spaces .

You’ll find excellent culinary options in this popular beachfront destination. Also, you can explore New Brighton State Beach, Lighthouse Field State Beach, and Seacliff State Beach.

If you’re lucky you might even catch a local surfing competition. Capitola is large enough to enjoy diverse activities yet small enough that it can be explored on foot.

While there are many beach towns along California’s beautiful coastline, there’s only one Capitola. I love visiting this quaint beach town and I highly recommend it both for a day trip or a weekend trip from the Bay Area .

Interesting fact: On 18 August 1961, residents in the town of Capitola, California, awoke to find sooty shearwaters slamming into their rooftops, and their streets covered with dead birds.

News reports suggested domoic acid poisoning (amnesic shellfish poisoning) as the cause. This incident inspired the iconic Alfred Hitchcock film ‘The Birds’.

7. Almaden Quicksilver County Park – A historical landmark in Northern California!

Are you looking for a day trip that is both fun and educational? Then be sure to visit Almaden Quicksilver County Park.

Located in South San Jose, Almaden Quicksilver County Park is a sprawling park that covers over 4,163 acres and is home to miles of hiking and biking trails, as well as opportunities for camping, fishing, and horseback riding.

Additionally, this popular park features several historical sites, including the remains of the New Almaden mercury mine.

During early spring , the park offers one of the most spectacular wildflower displays in the region. This park is a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers, thanks to its beautiful scenery and abundance of wildlife.

Tip: Choose the Hacienda entrance to the park. It features the iconic New Almaden bell tower and outdoor mining museum in the parking lot of the Hacienda Entrance.

Also, don’t miss seeing St. Anthony Church, located within a minute of walking distance. It is one of the oldest churches in San Jose, a nd features beautiful architecture.

8. Point Reyes National Seashore – A breathtaking grandeur of nature!

journey travels and tours

A trip to Point Reyes National Seashore has many layers of beauty. When I saw large herds of tule elk, native to California, basking in the sun on a green valley, it gave me a bucolic feeling.

While walking through the Cypress tree tunnel , a must-see place, on the way to Point Reyes Lighthouse, I felt that I have left the cacophony of the modern world somewhere afar.

I loved the wildness of the Pacific when I spent a day at Drakes Beach. With the beautiful view of the vast expanse of the Pacific ocean from above, Point Reyes National Seashore is a gem.

While walking to Point Reyes Lighthouse, I got to see a gorgeous sunset. The white visitor center sparkled along the way ❤️.

I greeted the twilight with the symphony of the evening wind. This natural sanctuary is a refuge for us mortal souls.

I would highly recommend savoring all the attractions slowly while exploring the bucolic and the wild.

9. Half Moon Bay – A top day trip from San Jose, California

journey travels and tours

I always enjoy a day trip to Half Moon Bay , a small city on the California coast. I think one of the best things about a day trip to Half Moon Bay is that it’s so close, but still feels like an escape.

With all its breathtaking views and activities waiting around every corner, Half Moon Bay is a perfect destination for a day trip from San Jose.

A few of my favorite spots are the Ritz Carlton – a luxurious hotel located right on the coast with free coastal access, Seal Cove Cypress Tree Tunnel in Moss Beach, the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, and Cowell-Purisima Trail for a beautiful hike.

Enjoy a virtual hike at Cowell-Purisma Trail below 💚

10. 17 Mile Drive – A best and must-do day trip from San Jose, California

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, 17mile drive, Lone Cypress

The 17-mile drive is one of the most scenic drives in the world, and it’s a must-visit from San Jose. The drive winds through dramatic coastal cliffs, snow-white beaches, mystical forests, and iconic golf courses.

You’ll get to see some of the most beautiful sights in the area, including the inspiring Lone Cypress, Crocker Grove – home to the largest and oldest Monterey Cypress trees in existence , look at the untouched beauty at  Fanshell Beach, Point Joe, and Spanish Bay.

At the end of your drive, take a stroll by the beautiful golf course and the Pacific Ocean at The Lodge – a luxurious Pebble beach resort.

The coastal access is open to the public. Finish your day after dining at one of the restaurants at The Lodge at Pebble Beach.

Tip: Admission to 17-Mile Drive is $10 per vehicle. Check out the 17-mile drive map .

Fun fact: Novelist Robert Louis Stevenson was said to have roamed the hills and dunes that now shape the first five holes at Spyglass Hill.

The stunning scenery was supposedly his inspiration for the book,  Treasure Island .

11. Palo Alto – the birthplace of silicon valley

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Hp Garage, Birthplace of Silicon Valley

If you want to imbibe some Silicon Valley vibes, then head to Palo Alto and explore its various corners.

Palo Alto is home to some of the biggest tech companies in the world. Visit HP Garage, the birthplace of silicon valley tucked away on a quiet, tree-lined residential street near Stanford University.

The HP Garage stands today as the enduring symbol of innovation and the entrepreneurial spirit. You can visit the Stanford University campus and the Cantor Center for Visual Arts .

You will have a great time, believe me.

12. Pacific Grove – the Butterfly town

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Pacific Grove

Pacific Grove, the small town is beautiful all year-long. But the magic carpet or the blooming ice plant that graces Pacific Grove’s shoreline at Perkins Park during the spring makes it one of the perfect destinations for spring break .

Also, from October through February, thousands of monarch butterflies migrate to Pacific Grove, cluster together on pine, cypress, and eucalyptus trees in the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary.

Due to this unique phenomenon, Pacific Grove is nicknamed Butterfly Town and gives us another reason to visit Pacific Grove during the holiday season.

Another quirky place I like in Pacific Grove is a vibrant butterfly house . You have to see this in person ❤️. I especially enjoy its laid-back vibe – a Xanax for the soul!

Tip: Mark the exact address of the house full of butterfly sculptures and artwork – 📍309 9th St, Pacific Grove, CA 93950

13. Carmel-by-the-Sea – An escape to a beautiful beach town!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Carmel-by-the-sea

Another great option for a day trip from San Jose is Carmel-by-the-Sea , one of America’s Top Beach Towns.

This charming town is known for its art galleries, quaint shops, and world-famous golf courses, givi ng it a disti nctive Europea n vibe.

Exceptional dining, wine-tasting rooms, and boutiques make it an ideal place to relax. You can spend the day exploring or relaxing on Carmel Beach.

If you are in the mood to go for a hike, then take the scenic road starting at 8th Avenue and ending near Martin Way.

It meanders above the bluff overlooking Camel Beach through sculptured Monterey Cypress trees.

Travel Tip: There are plenty of ways to enjoy a beautiful day in Carmel-by-the-Sea! Read my travel guide about   the Top things to do in Carmel .

14. Stockton – An offbeat day trip from San Jose, California

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Stockton, Wat Dhammararam

Explore Stockton on a day trip from San Jose. Stockton is a city on the San Joaquin River, in California’s Central Valley, the most productive agricultural region of Califor nia and one of the most productive in the world.

There’s a lot to see and do in Stockton, California. My favorite is Wat Dhammararam, a Cambodian Buddhist temple in Stockton.

This temple features over 90 colorful and larger-than-life jewel-encrusted statues that celebrate the life and story of the Buddha, in a Cambodian setting.

One thing that I loved the most was the sculptures depicting the scenes which Gautama Buddha witnessed when he was a prince.

I have read about those scenes and realizations of Buddha many times but seeing them in the form of sculptures was remarkable.

Also don’t miss Pixie Woods – a lovely amusement park that is perfect for kids of all ages. Discover Pixie Woods’ enchanted forest and magical pathways and be transformed by a world of imagination and wonder.

If you love doing a picnic in the park, then Louis Park beside Pixie Woods is a perfect option.

15. West Cliff Drive and Natural Bridges State Bridge in Santa Cruz – Oh nature!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, West Cliff Drive

If you are not in the mood for a long drive then here is an easy day trip from San Jose . I n less tha n a n hour, you can reach West Cliff Drive – a scenic, 3-mile promenade i n Sa nta Cruz .

While walking the path I often stop to take in the refreshing views of the Pacific. Soak up the sun and do some people-watching before heading to the Natural Bridges State Beach.

journey travels and tours

This park and beach is an excellent vantage point for viewing shorebirds, migrating whales, as well as seals and Sea otters playing offshore.

Further along the beach, public access tidepools offer a glimpse into life beneath the sea, while low tides reveal sea stars, shore crabs, sea anemones, and other colorful ocean life.

The park also includes a large area of coastal scrub and grasslands, with bright native wildflowers in the spring.

Tip: Visit Natural Bridges Monarch Trail from late October and all of November to go for a walk and observe the monarch butterflies which flock here in late autumn and stay here throughout the winter months.

16. Golden Gate Park, San Francisco – A beautiful park in a beautiful city!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Sculpture garden at De Young Museum in San Francisco

If you’re looking for a fun day out in San Francisco, look no further than Golden Gate Park. With plenty of activities to keep you busy, it’s easy to spend a whole day here without getting bored.

To start your day, make your way to the Music Concourse. This beautiful open space is home to a variety of concerts and events throughout the year.

You can also find a number of food trucks here, so it’s the perfect spot for a quick lunch. After you’ve eaten, wander over to the California Academy of Sciences .

This world-renowned museum is a must-see for any visitor to San Francisco. It’s home to a variety of exhibits, including an aquarium, planetarium, rainforest, and natural history museum.

Next, head to the Japanese Tea Garden. This stunning garden is one of the most popular attractions in Golden Gate Park, and it’s easy to see why.

With its pagodas, ponds, and koi fish, it’s a true haven of peace and tranquility. Just beside the Japanese Garden is the de Young Museum, San Francisco’s oldest museum.

De Young Museum is a fine arts museum  and is perfect for intellectual stimulation, reflection, and contemplation.

Also, go for a walk in their sculpture garden and enjoy a cup of coffee at the de Young Café in their outdoor setting.

There’s plenty to see inside the Golden Gate Park, so make sure you set aside enough time to do it justice. No matter what you choose to do, Golden Gate Park is a must-visit for anyone traveling to San Francisco.

Tip: If you’re feeling adventurous, why not rent a bike and explore the rest of the park? 🙂

17. Museums in San Francisco – For enriching day trips!

journey travels and tours

If you are someone who always seeks to expand her frontier of knowledge then museums are often a nice place to start with.

I love how museums are like a book you can open up and always find new things inside, that inspire and stimulate.

I like getting lost in someone else’s world especially when all my own proposals don’t seem quite as feasible at times 😉.

The various museums in San Francisco with their unparalleled exhibits on art & science alike lure me. I have bee n to almost all the exciting museums in the city.

I spent delightful days exploring both classic-style museums and new-era immersive exhibits in San Francisco.

So, if you want enriching day trips on any of your weekends, choose any one of the museums below or all and explore. Here are my best picks.

One of my favorite places to go when I want something different is the San Francisco Museum Of Modern Art, or SFMOMA because they have amazing exhibits featuri ng the best of moder n art!

It makes me think.

I remember visiting the exhibition on the effervescent pop art of Andy Warhol  and enjoyed it thoroughly. Book tickets for SF MOMA

Legion of Honor

journey travels and tours

If you want to explore classical Europea n art, then Legion de Honor Museum is a great place to visit. They have an amazing collection of paintings, sculptures, and artifacts focussi ng primarily o n art from Europe.

I remember seeing a sculpture of an eye by a Swiss artist and I was awestruck by its detail. I’d definitely recommend Legion of Honor to get a taste of Europea n museums right here i n Sa n Fra ncisco.

Book tickets for Legion of Honor .

Exploratorium

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Buckyball, Exploratorium

The Exploratorium in San Francisco is one of the top 10 science museums in the United States and provides a fertile platform for curious minds.

It encourages everyone to wonder – What? How? Why? Abstract concepts of science are displayed in an easy-to-understand format and are highly interactive. Book tickets for Exploratorium .

Tip: After spending a whole day exploring a museum, if you have some extra time, how about a fun activity?

How about a cable car ride at night 💖 ? Cable cars have come to symbolize San Francisco along with the Golden Gate Bridge.

A cable car ride in San Francisco at night is definitely an experience you won’t forget. The city is lit up and the views are spectacular.

The cars themselves are quite old and rattly, but that only adds to the charm. Make sure to hold on tight though, as these cars can move pretty fast!

Tip: Explore the Exploratorium at night with special Thursday programming (18+)

18. Explore the Presidio of San Francisco and spend a cultural evening in the city

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, The open lawns of the Presidio, San Francisco with the iconic red share chairs!

If you want to combine outdoor activities along with indoor ones on your day trip then Presidio in San Francisco is a great option.

This former military base is now a national park, and there’s plenty to see and do there.

One of the highlights of Presidio is the Main Parade Ground, where you’ll find rows of bright red chairs, affectionately called “share chairs”.

It’s a great place to relax with unbeatable Golden Gate Bridge views , and during the warmer months, a great spot for a picnic.

Another popular spot and my favorite in Presidio is the Lovers Lane trail and Wood Line to the right. Wood Line is an iconic work by one of the world’s most renowned artists, Andy Goldsworthy.

Made up of eucalyptus branches sourced from various park projects that required tree removal, Wood Line is more than 1,200 feet in length.

You have to see this outdoor art installation of trees that winds their way through the peaceful eucalyptus forest in person.

This secluded spot is perfect for a romantic stroll. Finally, don’t forget to visit the Walt Disney Family Museum while you’re in Presidio.

This unique museum is dedicated to the life and work of Walt Disney, and it’s a must-see for fans of his movies and cartoons.

Tip: After spending a beautiful day at Presidio, you can catch a show of the San Francisco Ballet or Listen to live music from the San Francisco Symphony at the Davies Symphony Hall.

You can also check for ongoing exhibitions in the city. I remember visiting the Immersive Van Gogh exhibit – a unique experience.

19. Big Sur – An unmissable escape from San Jose!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Big Sur, Bixby Creek Bridge

If you are in the mood for a long drive, then choose Highway 1 and drive to Big Sur , one of the best places for a day trip from San Jose.

Also, this is the best way to experience California’s breathtaking coast. With the Pacific Ocean as a constant companion, a sense of vastness permeates into our being while driving here.

The winding curves will take your breath away with their stunning views. Every turn here is beautiful. You can always choose to pull over at numerous turnouts and take in the amazing views.

One place where you must stop is Bixby Creek Bridge. After all, it is one of the most photographed bridges in California!

If you want to go on a hike, especially after sitting inside the car for long, then head towards the Pfeiffer Falls trail in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park.

If you don’t feel like hiking, watch the water rush by in the Pfeiffer-Redwood Creek and relish a tasty dinner or afternoon coffee and snack in the Big Sur Lodge .

Perhaps it was one of the best coffee spots on this drive. If it is a sunny day and you enjoy outdoor sitting arrangements with stunning views, Nepenthe is also a great option for a sumptuous lunch.

20. Gilroy – Garlic Capital of the World!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Gilroy Gardens

Gilroy is a small town located in Santa Clara County, California. Gilroy is known for its garlic crop and a large garlic festival that takes place every year featuring various garlicky foods such as garlic ice cream, leading to the city’s nickname, the Garlic Capital of the World!

If you’re looking for a fun day trip to do with your family or friends, Gilroy is a great option! Some of the main attractions in Gilroy include Gilroy gardens, Mt. Madonna County Park , Mt. Madonna Center, and Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple.

Gilroy Gardens is a garden-themed family theme park. The park has 22 rides and 5 attractions and is perfect for some fun and run for the little ones and the whole family.

Don’t miss Axel Erlandson’s Circus Trees and a train ride through the garden! Mount Madonna Center is a nature preserve and retreat center that offers hiking trails, yoga classes, and other outdoor activities.

After spending a couple of hours in Gilroy Gardens, head towards the Mount Madonna Center – a peaceful haven where you can step back, slow down, contemplate, and get engaged in deeper conversations with members there.

You can also join one of their yoga classes. Please reserve your spot there before going. I loved this center and the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple located inside.

I am not a particularly religious person but loved the spiritual and serene atmosphere.

Tip: If you are in the mood to go shopping then visit Gilroy Premium Outlets . It is one of Northern California’s largest outlet centers, where you’ll find impressive savings at more than 145 factory outlet stores.

21. Downtown San Jose – A world apart!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Downtown San Jose, The Tech Museum of Innovation

If you are in a mood to explore a town on foot then downtown San Jose is a great place to spend a day. There are plenty of things to see and do here. Explore them all at your pace.

Take a stroll through the Plaza de Cesar Chavez.

It is a popular place to hang out as it is located near museums such as The Tech Interactive and the illustrious San Jose Museum of Art. The park regularly attracts visitors with its musical performances and festivals.

I love the beautiful water fountains, flower beds, and even an open-air theater.

The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose is a must-see place for everyone, whether you are interested in technology or not.

At the heart of silicon valley, where new ideas emerge and lead us and have had such a profound influence on the world, a museum such as this is indeed expected.

All the exhibits here are interesting. Innovations in Health Care and Body Motion are two of my favorite exhibits. This museum entertains, educates, involves, and inspires. Book tickets for The Tech Museum

Also plan to visit the San Jose Museum of Art, located at a walkable distance from the Tech Museum of Innovation.

This premier modern and contemporary art museum in Silicon Valley has inspired me in different ways. I love seeing their well-thought exhibitions, all year round.

Whenever I visit this art museum, I am struck by the hanging colorful glass chandeliers by Dale Chihuly. Also do n’t miss the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph located in Downtown San Jose.

Tip: If you are tired after exploring the city head for a delicious dinner in one of the innumerable restaurants in downtown San Jose.

22. Point Lobos State Natural Reserve

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, Whalers Cove

If you’re looking for a beautiful and serene nature escape among South Bay State Parks , Point Lobos State Natural Reserve is the place for you.

Among all of California’s 280 state parks, Point Lobos State Natural Reserve has often been called the “crown jewel of the State Park System.”

Select a sunny day and go for a hike. It offers a wild, majestic landscape laced with 14 meandering trails. If you choose a trail along the shoreline, as I did, you will get to see innumerable seabirds along the way.

The soothing serenity and abundance of natural beauty here will nourish the painter, poet, or photographer in you. If you want to spice up the day with some adventure, then go for scuba diving.

The sea near Point Lobos is considered to be one of the richest underwater habitats in the world.

Don’t miss seeing Whalers Cove, a small cabin built by Chinese fishermen which is now a cultural history museum.

23. Oakland – A gorgeous city!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Lake Merritt, Oakland

Oakland is a beautiful city, and it’s definitely worth a day trip from Sa n Jose! There are so many things to see and do in Oakland, you could easily spend an entire day there. Here are some of the highlights.

Lake Merritt and its surroundings are perfect for a leisurely stroll. I often visit Lake Merritt especially around sunset for beautiful sunset photographs.

The reflection of the buildings, trees, and boats look stunning during the golden hour. But that doesn’t mean you have nothing else to do during the day.

Visit the adjacent Bonsai garden and spend some time savoring the beauty and diversity of these tiny plants.

Then visit the Oakland Museum of California to know the history of California and how it has evolved.

It is the best museum o n California by far, and you will be humbled and proud to know about how much influence it has had on the world! Don’t forget to check out the museum shop for some pretty cool souvenirs.

After exploring the museum, visit The Cathedral of Christ the Light , a new age church where Jesus Christ is created usi ng digital projectio ns.

Next head to Jack London Square. This is a great spot to take in the views of the Bay Area. You can also wander around the shops and restaurants, or take a boat ride.

25. Computer History Museum and Googleplex i n Mou ntai n View – An enriching escape!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Computer History Museum

Technology is changing the geography of our lives. Since we live in the heart of Silicon Valley, it is interesting to know the long history of technology and its revolutionary impact on the world.

Visit the Computer History Museum in Mountain View and discover stories and exhibits that inform and inspire, or satisfy your curiosity with hands-on activities.

The story of computing is invigorating and is driven by the human passion for tinkering, inventing, and solving difficult problems.

Spend a day here and you will go back home thinking about human ingenuity. Silicon Valley’s innovative tech culture is built up around a belief that Change is Good .

While exploring this museum, I was thinking about the changes brought about by technology to every aspect of our lives.

The pace of change confounds me often. This museum gave me a fertile ground to reflect upon many profound things directly related to our lives.

After exploring the Computer History Museum, head over to Googleplex in Mountain View – the corporate headquarters of Google. Enjoy a cool sculpture garden there before heading back home.

26. Healdsburg – For a taste of wi ne cou ntry i n So noma Cou nty

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Healdsburg is a city located in Sonoma County

If you want to plan an incredible wine country day trip in a quaint, yet mighty town then Healdsburg, located at the north end of Sonoma County is matchless.

Open outdoors with stunning natural scenery, delicious food and wine, and warm hospitality here is a true celebration of California life.

Settle in a relaxed atmosphere at any of the vineyards and escape to happiness. I highly recommend La Crema Estate at Sarlee’s Vineyard and Angeline – Martin Ray Vineyards & Winery .

If you are planning a trip here in spring don’t miss seeing the beautiful garden named Richard’s Grove at Sarlee’s Vineyard. Stroll through Healdsburg’s charming downtown district, filled with art galleries, boutiques, and restaurants.

Be sure to stop by Healdsburg’s lovely central Plaza, a beautiful public square, which was named by Travel + Leisure Magazine as one of “America’s Most Beautiful Town Squares.”

When people think of wine country, they typically think of Napa Valley. Napa and Sonoma are collectively known as California wine country, but despite being close to each other—only separated by a mountain range—both wine capitals are very different from each other. Sonoma’s wineries are more laid-back, less crowded and commercialized than Napa. Travel Pulse

27. Davenport, Santa Cruz – One of my favorite day trips from San Jose, California

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Chirasree Banerjee | SF Bay Area, CA (@travelrealizations)

If you’re looking to slow down a bit then head towards Davenport, California.

Nine miles north of Santa Cruz, Davenport’s coastline is carpeted with mustard fields in spring and includes sweeping vistas of the Pacific Ocean.

Locals call this area SlowCoast. Relax at Davenport beach and see unique rock formations, including the “Shark Fin,” at Davenport Cove Beach.

28. Lick Observatory, Mount Hamilton – An escape to a world of starry light and dark!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Lick Observatory, Mount Hamilton

After your daily work, have you ever looked up and got lost in the beauty of the moon or the immense night sky? I am sure you have.

So, plan a drive to Lick Observatory, which is the world’s first permanently occupied mountain-top observatory.

Come here and get lost in the world of cosmos through its various exhibits. Listen to a short informal talk about Lick history while taking a look at the Great Lick Refractor in the 36-inch telescope dome for free .

Also, don’t forget to take a short walk to the Shane Dome to view the 120-inch Reflector. The Shane reflector is one of the major telescopes used to discover extrasolar planets.

Enjoy a cup of coffee in the adjacent garden and enjoy the view of the Santa Clara Valley from the parking lot at 4,209 feet.

29. Moss Landing State Beach and Salinas – A literary escape!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, National Steinbeck center

How can we live without our lives? How will we know it’s us without our past? John Steinbeck

Remember this beautiful and profound sentence?

This is by John Steinbeck, a winner of the Nobel Prize in literature. Spend a few hours exploring the National Steinbeck Center and I am sure you would love it.

Buy one of his books, the Grapes of Wrath being my favorite, from the museum and head towards Moss Landing State Beach.

In Moss Landing State Beach , relax and feel the sun while reading the book you bought. This is definitely off-beat but the creative indulgence is oh so satisfying!

I love this beach very much because it is easily accessible from the parking lot and is never very crowded. Later, you can also opt for whale watching, one of the must-do activities in Monterey .

Drive to Monterey Old Fisherman’s Wharf, where the boats set sail into the harbor with breathtaking sea views. Book your tickets for Monterey Bay Whale Watching Tour.

Tip: Enjoy delicious Fish & Chips at Phil’s Fish Market & Eatery. 📍 7600 Sandholdt Rd, Moss Landing, CA 95039

30. Steam Train Ride at Roaring Camp Railways – A bit of fu n a nd adventure!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Steam Train Ride at Roaring Camp Railways

If you are in the mood to do something fu n a nd adve nturous, consider a steam train ride at Roaring Camp Railways.

Embark on a steam train and ride through the towering green trees. and see how the light filter through the leaves.

Listen to the sound of the train rolling over the track. Within minutes, you will feel you are far away from the familiar cityscape.

The puffing sound of the train as steam is blown through the stack and the hissing of the air pump will take you away to a world of a bygone era.

After the refreshing ride, explore the adjacent Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park for an invigorating hike amid the towering redwood trees. A ride on a steam train ride is fun for a child and adult alike.

Distance Calculator Between Cities for Precise Driving Distances

Efficiently find the distance between cities, including driving distances, estimated travel times, and detailed route maps for any journey in the USA, from cross-country adventures to short drives.

This distance calculator, covering the United States, North America, and worldwide, simplifies your travel planning. Enter your start and end points in the "From" and "To" fields — accepting city names, addresses, or GPS coordinates — and click "Calculate" to get started.

Customize your journey with "Fuel consumption" and "Fuel price" for cost estimates, and use the crosshair icon for map selections. Dive into "Advanced options" to add stops or adjust speeds, tailoring the trip to your pace and ensuring accurate travel time predictions.

Driving Distance Between Two Cities: US Route Examples

Route Planner for Estimating Distance Between Two Points

Family Vacation Planning : Families planning summer vacations can use the distance calculator to plan their route, estimate fuel costs based on their car's fuel consumption, and calculate budget needs, ensuring a cost-effective and enjoyable journey.

Business Travel Optimization : Professionals can plot the most efficient routes for their business trips, incorporating distance calculations to manage time effectively and budget for travel expenses accurately.

Logistics and Freight Management : Long-haul truckers and freight forwarders can utilize the tool to map out routes between cities, estimate mileage, and calculate transportation costs based on company tariffs, optimizing delivery schedules and pricing.

Meeting Halfway : Friends living in different cities can find a central meeting point by calculating the halfway distance between their locations, making it easier to arrange reunions and share new adventures together.

Explore Functions of the City-to-City Distance Calculator

City distances evolve annually with the construction of new roads, highways, and bridges.

Our online Distance Between Cities Calculator complements your preferred GPS navigator by allowing you to map out your route in advance, while your GPS assists during the drive.

The calculator utilizes OSM data and incorporates key Google Maps functionalities, including:

Exclusive features of our calculator include:

USA, North America, and Worldwide Coverage

138,192 localities covered in United States. 1,971,411 localities worldwide.

This service measures the distance between cities around the world and is available in several languages:

How Driving Distance Is Calculated Between Two Locations

Algorithm for calculating driving distances between cities.

This route calculation tool harnesses the power of shortest path search algorithms within a weighted road graph, employing sophisticated algorithms like Dijkstra, A-Star, and Contraction Hierarchies . Unlike conventional calculators that use distance or travel time as the graph weight, our system optimizes drive time for vehicles, favoring routes on higher-class roads for a smoother journey.

The backbone of this tool is built on OpenStreetMap data, ensuring our road graphs are accurate and up-to-date. We calculate distances between road segments with the haversine formula , using precise GPS coordinates to measure the Great Circle Distance. This formula is pivotal for calculating "air distance" or "straight line distance" between two points, taking into account the curvature of the Earth.

Road distances, however, diverge from straight line distances due to the natural curvature and layout of roads . To address this, roads are represented as segmented lines, and the haversine formula is applied to each segment, allowing for precise calculation of the journey length between any two points.

Recognizing that cities encompass large areas, our tool selects a central point within each city for distance calculations between cities. For personalized route planning, users can specify exact addresses or select points on the map. Additionally, the route's start and end points can be adjusted directly on the map for enhanced customization.

Travel time calculations break down the route into segments, evaluating the maximum permitted speed for each segment to estimate the fastest possible travel time.

It’s important to note that while our route calculation relies on advanced computer modeling for accuracy, no model is perfect. We encourage users to plan with a margin for adjustment to ensure a reliable and efficient journey.

Alternative Methods for Distance Calculation Between Two Addresses

One simple way to measure distance is by using a highway atlas. By tracing a route with your eye and rolling a curvimeter along it, you can gauge the distance. Estimating travel time involves assuming an average speed of 50 miles/hour on major intercity roads. Although this method provides rough estimates, it's straightforward.

In the absence of a curvimeter, a ruler can serve as a substitute. Start by aligning the ruler's zero mark with your route's beginning and follow the road's bends closely. Then, translate the measured length into kilometers or miles using the map's scale, which is typically provided in the atlas.

For those seeking a more streamlined approach, pre-calculated distance tables specifically for the USA are available on websites, atlases, and guidebooks. Particularly useful for journeys between major cities, these tables streamline planning, although they may omit smaller locales.

Understanding the value of cash back is simple, but valuing airline miles or points redeemable for travel requires digging a bit deeper. At Newsweek, we’ve developed a common language to talk about the value of points and miles: our valuations.

Our valuations translate points into dollars and cents in a way that reflects reality. They are based on actual data across a balance of accessible redemption options, not just the aspirational first and business class redemptions that require a PhD in miles and points to book. The upshot is that our valuations help you understand the actual value you can easily get from your miles and points.

Plus, it includes a $50 annual statement credit toward airline purchases. Travelers are also covered with an array of travel protections and cell phone insurance in case something goes wrong.

About the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Travel Credit Card

The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey credit card builds upon the success of the original Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card , as it also earns flexible points but with a focus on travel and dining purchases.

With the Autograph Journey, you’ll earn up to 5X points on travel-related purchases and an unlimited 3X points on dining worldwide. The card includes an annual flight credit that’s good on any airline, without having to choose an airline ahead of time. When you book trips with the Autograph Journey Card, you’ll receive valuable travel benefits to protect your trip, like rental car protection, trip cancellation/interruption protection, lost baggage reimbursement and more. Your cell phone is also covered up to $1,000, up to two times per 12-month period, when you pay the bill with your Autograph Journey Card (subject to a $25 deductible).

As a new cardholder, you can earn 60,000 bonus points by spending at least $4,000 on purchases within the first three months. These points are worth $600 toward travel and have numerous redemption options, including booking flights and hotels, getting cash back or buying gift cards. Wells Fargo also introduced transfer partners in April 2024, so you can transfer points to airlines and hotels to book award reservations worth potentially even more.

Benefits of the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Card

In this Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Card review, you’ll learn about the card’s numerous benefits and how they can improve your travel experience.

Earning Power

People who love to travel can maximize their rewards with the Autograph Journey Card. This card’s bonus categories target the areas where travelers spend the most—flights, hotels, dining and other travel purchases.

Flexible Redemptions and Transfer Partners

The points earned from the Autograph Journey credit card have multiple redemption options. You can redeem them as a credit to your Wells Fargo credit card statement, as a deposit to your Wells Fargo bank account or to reduce your Wells Fargo mortgage balance. Points can be used to pay for online shopping or to buy gift cards. You can also book travel through Wells Fargo.

As of April 2024, Wells Fargo introduced hotel and airline transfer partners. The initial partners include:

Wells Fargo plans to expand this lineup to offer even more transfer opportunities to cardholders.

$50 Annual Airline Credit

Each year, you’ll receive a statement credit of $50 when you make an airline purchase of $50 or more. Unlike some airline credits, these can be used to buy airfare as well—and you don’t have to choose an airline ahead of time. Qualifying purchases include airfare, upgrades, checked baggage, change fees and more. So, whether you’re booking a flight or paying for a fee related to a flight you’re taking, this annual airline credit has your back.

Travel Protections

The best-laid travel plans can easily go astray when your flight is canceled, your bag is lost or something happens to your rental car. Your trip is covered when you use the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Visa to book your reservations. Trip cancellation and interruption protection covers you up to $15,000 for lodging, flights and activities when your trip is canceled or interrupted for a covered reason.

If your checked or carry-on luggage is lost or stolen during transit, you’re covered for up to $3,000 per trip. Additionally, your rental car is protected against damage or theft with secondary rental car insurance. The card also comes with up to $1,000,000 in travel accident insurance, travel and emergency services assistance, roadside dispatch and more.

Cell phone Insurance

When you pay your cell phone bill with the Autograph Journey Card, you’re covered for up to $1,000 in cell phone insurance (up to two claims per 12-month period). This coverage protects you against damage, theft or loss, and it requires a simple $25 deductible.

Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection

As a Visa Signature credit card, this Wells Fargo credit card includes access to the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection. Book a stay at one of the participating hotels to receive benefits similar to those who have elite status. Benefits include the best available rate guarantee, complimentary room upgrade (when available), complimentary breakfast for two, VIP guest status, late checkout upon request (when available) and a $25 food and beverage credit. Select hotels offer additional perks like a free hotel night, resort credits and more.

Autograph Card Exclusives

Eligible Wells Fargo cardholders also have access to Autograph Card Exclusives. These live, intimate events feature a limited number of tickets available exclusively to cardholders to purchase. Events occur throughout the U.S., and available artists and experiences change during the year.

Who Is the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Card Best For?

The Autograph Journey from Wells Fargo is best for travelers who want to maximize rewards on travel purchases. This card’s bonus categories center around travel and dining, and it doesn’t require cardholders to book through the bank’s travel portal to earn maximum rewards. This card allows you to book directly with airlines, hotels and other travel providers to earn credit card rewards and perks from the loyalty programs.

While the card has a $95 annual fee, it is offset by its yearly $50 credit toward airline purchases. Simply book flights of $50 or more to automatically receive the statement credit on your next bill. The card’s complimentary travel protections and cell phone insurance also provide peace of mind for frequent travelers and people whose cell phone is an indispensable part of their daily lives.

Travelers who want to earn flexible rewards points that can transfer to airline and hotel loyalty programs will also be excited about this new Wells Fargo credit card . The Autograph Journey launches with five airline partners and one hotel partner. While this total is smaller than competing brands, Wells Fargo is working to expand its list of transfer partners, and more brands will be added throughout the year.

Who Should Consider an Alternative to the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Card?

While the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey has much to offer, it may not be the right card for every traveler. Wells Fargo intends to add more transfer partners over time, but some consumers may not want to wait that long or roll the dice that new partners will be among their preferred brands. Consumers who want access to a greater array of transfer partners should look at alternatives from Chase , Citi, Capital One or American Express , since each of those programs has 14 or more partners to choose from.

Having access to TSA PreCheck or Global Entry while traveling is a huge timesaver. The Autograph Journey credit card does not offer reimbursement for these Trusted Traveler application fees. Some travel credit cards at the same price point, like the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card or the United℠ Explorer Card (whose benefit also applies to the NEXUS program), include reimbursement once every four years.

How Does the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Card Stack Up to Its Competitors?

Before applying for the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Card, compare it to these popular travel credit cards to decide which one is best for your wallet.

Wells Fargo Autograph Journey vs Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

The Chase Sapphire Preferred is a solid travel credit card that earns Ultimate Rewards points. With this card, you’ll earn 5X points on travel when booking through Chase Travel and 2X points on other travel purchases, such as when purchasing directly with the airline, hotel or other provider. The Autograph Journey doesn’t require you to book through its portal to earn its top rewards rates and earns 50% more points on all other travel purchases. The Sapphire Preferred also earns 3X points on dining, select streaming services and on online groceries (excluding Target, Walmart and wholesale clubs), while the Autograph Journey earns 3X points only on dining.

When you redeem Ultimate Rewards points, you’ll get 25% more value when booking travel through Chase Travel. This extra value means you’ll redeem fewer points than booking similar travel through Wells Fargo. There are also 14 Chase airline and hotel partners , which is nearly three times as many options, and it features well-known domestic brands like United, Southwest, Hyatt and Marriott.

Wells Fargo Autograph Journey vs. Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

With the Capital One Venture Rewards Card , you’ll earn an unlimited 2X miles on every purchase and 5X miles on hotels and car rentals booked through Capital One Travel. While it doesn’t offer the same earning power as the Autograph Journey, the Venture Card offers a solid rewards rate on every purchase, which is ideal for people who don’t want to remember which categories offer extra rewards. The card also includes up to $100 reimbursement for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck membership application fees and complimentary Hertz Five Star elite status, which the Autograph Journey cannot match.

Capital One miles can be redeemed for cash back, travel, gift cards and more. Cardholders can also get statement credits for purchases made in the previous 90 days. Further, Capital One offers more than 15 airline and hotel transfer partners, which is three times as many options as Wells Fargo. The card does not charge foreign transaction fees, and it includes auto rental collision damage waiver and extended warranty protection on eligible purchases made with your card.

Wells Fargo Autograph Journey vs. Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card

For people who want to earn Wells Fargo credit card points but don’t want to pay an annual fee, the Wells Fargo Autograph Card is a solid choice. This card earns an unlimited 3X points on travel, gas, restaurants, transit, popular streaming services and phone plans. These bonus categories are an excellent way to maximize common spending categories, and many of these household categories aren’t available from the Autograph Journey Card.

Additionally, the no-annual-fee Autograph card includes an introductory APR offer on purchases, which the Autograph Journey doesn’t offer. If you need extra time to pay off your purchases without incurring interest charges, the Wells Fargo Autograph Card is the best option. This card includes many of the same protections as the $95 annual fee Autograph Journey, and its points also can be redeemed for cash back, gift cards and more or transferred to airline and hotel partners.

Frequently Asked Questions

What credit score do you need for a wells fargo autograph journey card.

For the best approval odds, you should have good to excellent credit when applying for the Autograph Journey Card. A good FICO credit score ranges from 670 to 739, while very good to exceptional FICO credit score start at 740 and above. If your credit score is below these levels, take steps to improve your score before applying.

How Much Are 60,000 Wells Fargo Points Worth?

At the most basic level, Wells Fargo points are worth 1 cent each toward travel, cash back, gift cards and more. This means that the 60,000 welcome bonus points from the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Card are worth $600. With the introduction of transfer partners, you may receive even higher value when transferring points to book award flights or hotel rooms.

Does the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Card Have Lounge Access?

No, the Autograph Journey does not include lounge access. To receive airport lounge access, typically, you’ll need to get a premium credit card for travel with an annual fee that likely ranges $395 or higher. Premium travel credit cards are best for frequent travelers who can justify paying such a high annual fee.

WTD invests in continuous AI advancement, ensuring a seamless, intuitive user experience, and revolutionizing travel from planning to discovery.

●      Transparency with AI: "How transparent is World Trip Deal with travellers regarding how AI is used in the booking process? Do they have any control over the AI recommendations?"

Mahdi Nourian emphasizes transparency at World Trip Deal (WTD), clearly outlining AI’s role in the booking process:

1. Clear Communication: WTD provides easy-to-understand explanations where AI impacts recommendations.

2. AI Preferences: Travelers can tailor their AI interactions by setting preferences for travel style, interests, and pace.

3. Curated Transparency: Instead of complex technical details, WTD highlights when recommendations are AI-driven, based on travel trends and user behaviors.

4. Control Through Customization: The platform allows extensive customization, enabling travelers to refine searches and adjust itineraries.

5. Human Expertise: AI is enhanced by human experts who provide insights to balance and personalize the travel experience.

WTD’s approach ensures that travelers understand and control AI’s input, enhancing their booking experience while keeping personal choice paramount.

Future of Travel and WTD:

●      AI and Sustainability: "Is there a role for AI in promoting sustainable travel practices within World Trip Deal's platform?"

Mahdi Nourian: at World Trip Deal we emphasize AI’s role in sustainable travel with eco-friendly suggestions and carbon offset options. WTD prioritizes user experience, innovates continuously, and ensures data transparency.

This approach not only enhances travel but also promotes responsible tourism and builds user trust in AI integration.

Finally, let's explore the broader impact of AI on the travel industry.

Transforming Travel:

●      Hyper-Personalization: AI will personalize travel experiences beyond imagination. Imagine itineraries tailored not just to destinations but to your mood, preferences, and even real-time data. AI will transform travel from a one-size-fits-all experience to a truly personal journey.

●      Streamlined Booking & Management: Travel booking will become effortless. Imagine AI automating tedious tasks like visa applications, travel insurance, and even managing itinerary changes with ease.

●      Accessibility & Inclusivity: AI can break down language barriers and assist travelers with disabilities. Imagine real-time translation tools and AI-powered accessibility recommendations, making travel a more inclusive experience for everyone.

However, AI also comes with challenges:

●      Ethical Considerations: Transparency and data privacy are crucial. AI algorithms need to be free from bias and ensure responsible data usage.

●      Human Interaction: Travel advisors still have a vital role. AI shouldn't replace the human touch. We envision a future where AI complements human expertise, offering a dynamic and personalized travel experience.

So, there you have it. World Trip Deal (WTD) is shaking things up in the travel industry with a potent blend of AI and affordability.

From personalized itineraries to hidden gem recommendations, WTD is making luxury travel accessible for the budget-conscious adventurer.

But WTD's vision extends beyond booking. They're looking to leverage AI throughout your entire journey, offering real-time recommendations, fostering a travel community, and even promoting sustainable practices.

As AI continues to reshape the travel landscape, WTD is poised to be a leader in this exciting transformation.

So, the next time you're dreaming of an escape, ditch the outdated guidebooks and endless price comparisons.

Head over to World Trip Deal and let AI craft the perfect adventure for you. After all, travel should be an unforgettable experience, not a logistical nightmare. And with WTD, it can be just that.

The 8 best neck pillows for travel.

Avoid a literal pain in the neck with these expert-approved travel pillows.

The Best Neck Pillows for Travel

The Cabeau Evolution S3 Travel Pillow is one of the best neck pillows for travel.

Just like the pillow you use at home , the best neck pillow for travel is the one that makes you feel most comfortable, allowing you to relax, rest and ultimately fall asleep on the go. The difference, however, is that a travel pillow is typically used when sitting up, which means it needs to provide enough support to keep your head from bobbing.

Based on recommendations from travel experts and advice from physicians, these are the best neck pillows for travel.

Best Overall: Cabeau Evolution S3

Best affordable: mvloc travel pillow, best for long flights: trtl travel pillow, best multipurpose: huzi infinity pillow, best inflatable: sunany inflatable travel pillow, best silk: slip jet setter travel pillow, best for backpacking: marchway ultralight inflatable camping pillow, best for kids: bcozzy double support neck pillow.

Cabeau Evolution S3 Travel Pillow in gray and infographic against white background.

Frequent travelers praise the design of the Cabeau Evolution S3, which is made of a special dual-density memory foam. "My pillow at home is made with memory foam so it's like bringing a piece of home on my travels," says travel blogger Jasmine Cheng of The Wandering Girl . "The sides are also raised, which prevents my head from moving when I'm sleeping." Travelers also appreciate the patented seat strap system that attaches the pillow to a seat or chair headrest as well as the slim flattened back, both of which prevent the head from bobbing.

A handy storage pouch on the side of the pillow allows you to keep your earbuds or other small items close by, and the pillow comes with a clasp that attaches to carry-on luggage . The removable pillow cover, which comes in a variety of colors, is machine-washable. What's more, this travel pillow can be stored in an included carry bag that condenses it to half its size.

Travelers appreciate the support (and the price tag) of this memory foam travel pillow. An adjustable rope lock allows you to secure the pillow to your neck for maximum support and comfort. The breathable and machine-washable cloth exterior prevents overheating. This travel pillow also comes with earplugs and an eye mask for ultimate relaxation.

The patented design of the Trtl Travel Pillow – with a hidden internal neck support surrounded by soft, hypoallergenic fleece – makes it a favorite among travelers, particularly for long flights. "Something about it just hits right in a travel accessory category where nothing previously worked for me," explains Meaghan Clawsie, luxury travel advisor at Elated Escapes . "I no longer have any back or neck pain when resting on long-haul flights." Simply wrap the pillow around your neck like a scarf, secure it in place with its built-in fastener and rest your head on the support.

If you tend to overheat easily, there's also the Trtl Pillow Cool , made with Tencel fibers to keep you at a comfortable temperature; a mesh panel makes the pillow particularly breathable as well. Both pillows are machine-washable.

If you're not sold on the classic U-shaped neck pillows for travel, consider this snake-like option instead. Able to be twisted into a variety of positions, the versatile Huzi Infinity Pillow provides whatever support feels best – even if that means resting your head on the tray table for a bit. You can also wear it around your neck like a scarf for neck and back comfort (even when you're not snoozing), use it as an eye mask, or drape it over your head if you get cold or want to block out noise.

Travelers love the pillow's bamboo fabric, describing it as soft, smooth and cool. Since it's filled with polyester, the whole pillow can be tossed in the washing machine , unlike its memory foam counterparts. The Infinity Pillow is available in nearly a dozen different colors, including gray, navy and pink.

Sunany Inflatable Travel Pillow in blue against white background.

Travelers love the H-shaped design of this inflatable pillow because it allows for use in multiple directions and supports both sides of the head and neck with a flat back. A removable hood on the pillow is a bonus: It encourages a cozy feel and prevents cold drafts from too much air conditioning. For optimal comfort, it is recommended to inflate the pillow about 80% to 90%.

A pocket for your earbud case on this travel pillow provides convenient access for listening to music, and the removable velour cover is machine-washable. The lightweight inflatable pillow can be stored in the included waterproof drawstring bag, which can also be attached to luggage. This travel neck pillow is available in black, gray and blue.

Slip Jet Setter Travel Pillow in pink against white background.

Travel pillows don't get softer than this luxurious new option by Slip. The Jet Setter Travel Pillow is made with the highest-grade long fiber mulberry silk, which helps to prevent skin creases and bedhead. It also comes with a carrying case with handles. The Jet Setter Travel Pillow is available in three prints and a pretty solid blush color.

While you can often bring your pillow from home for tent camping, backpacking requires something more lightweight, such as this inflatable option by Marchway. "An inflatable pillow is a game-changer when it comes to backpacking, and an ultralight pillow can't be beat," says Leilani Osmundson , digital producer for travel at U.S. News. "The Marchway pillow fits the bill: It's comfortable, packable and extremely lightweight." This pillow is designed for both back and side sleepers, and doubles as a lumbar support for everyday travels and needs. Once it's deflated, you can machine-wash the cover before folding the pillow into an included drawstring bag.

BCOZZY Double Support Neck Pillow in pink with blue hearts design against white background.

Courtesy of BCOZZY

The BCOZZY neck pillow is ideal for all travelers – including kids, with small sizes for youngsters between 3 and 7 years old, and medium options for ages 8 and 12. Travelers like the ergonomic design of the patented pillow, which supports the head and neck by propping the chin up. Overlapping pillow arms, which wrap around the neck and under the chin, can be tightened based on the level of support you need.

If you or your child is a side sleeper, fold the pillow in half, double up the sides and place it on your shoulder, leaning your head to the side. An elevated side option allows you to overlap the pillow arms on top of each other and rotate it 90 degrees to the side for double support for the neck and chin.

This travel pillow is available in a variety of colors and patterns, including light blue and pink hearts. A snap strap attaches the included travel bag to your child's luggage , and you can throw the pillow in the washing machine after your trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Experts agree a supportive pillow is essential for travel. "The biggest issue many travelers experience when sleeping on a plane is that the seats don't recline enough," explains Dr. Alex Dimitriu, a sleep/wake and performance specialist who is dual board certified in psychiatry and sleep medicine. "This often results in the head being just on the brink of tipping forward – which is not a comfortable sleeping position. Because of this insufficient recline, it is important to keep padding behind the head and neck minimal to reduce the tendency for the head to tip forward."

Most travel pillows are designed to be worn around the neck, providing enough support to prevent the head from tipping forward.

When shopping for a neck pillow for travel, experts recommend considering the following factors:

Proper head support:  What's most important is ensuring your head is supported in the right places by your travel pillow – and, in particular, not being pushed forward by excessive padding. "A good pillow would provide support for side sleeping, rather than a lot of padding behind the head, which just pushes the head forward too much," says Dimitriu.

Material: Consider both the external and internal material of the pillow:

External: Chiropractic physician Eric Smith advises to make sure the material of your travel pillow is breathable and won't subject you to an overheated sleep, since one of the main reasons for moving around a lot as you sleep is getting too hot. "When your face gets too hot on one side, even if you're sleeping, you're going to move from it because it's too warm," Smith explains.

There's no real consensus on which material is best for a cool, comfy sleep – and different people will have different preferences – so Smith's advice is to try before you fly (and don't hesitate to request a refund if your chosen pillow isn't working out).

A travel pillow for your neck isn't considered a carry-on or personal item (and the same generally goes for small, loose items like jackets and umbrellas). That said, it's always best to review your airline's carry-on luggage size restrictions before traveling.

A good neck pillow for travel isn't the only key to achieving a decent sleep while in transit. "From the standpoint of evolution, we're kind of hardwired to be a little bit more on high alert in those situations," explains Rebecca Robbins, an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School and scientist at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital. "We're a little bit more in fight or flight mode; our brain is subconsciously scanning the environment for threats and there are new sounds and new smells."

She recommends finding elements that are relaxing to you, which might include some of the following:

Schon and Cain are the two remaining members going back to the early 1980s when Journey was churning out hits like “Don’t Stop Believing,” “Any Way You Want It” and “Open Arms.” The two reflected on the band during a recent video interview, including on recent lawsuits, disputes and personnel changes, and regaining a level of popularity that has Journey back on the road.

But there were more issues to come – this time between Schon and Cain. Schon sent a cease-and-desist letter to Cain after Cain joined a sing-along of “Don’t Stop Believing” at a November 2022 event for former president Donald Trump. Cain’s wife, Paula, had worked as a spiritual advisor to Trump. Schon took offense to Cain’s performance, noting that Journey never was and never would be a political band.

Then last year, Schon and Cain traded lawsuits over a financial account for the group. The bandmates hashed out their differences without the courts, they said.

“All we really did was get fed up with the legal and having legals talk instead of us,” Schon said. “We talked for a couple of hours and we talked through it all. I think that’s what fixed everything.”

Now Schon and Cain are leading Journey (with Pineda, Castronovo and Jensen) on one of the band’s biggest touring years. Fans can expect to hear Journey’s biggest hits — the “Dirty Dozen” as the band has nicknamed them — with a handful of new or deeper cuts. This makes crafting set lists a challenge but it’s a problem many bands would welcome.

“We just have a massive catalog,” Cain said, “with so many great songs that we don’t get to.”

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Where: Scope, 201 E. Brambleton Ave., Norfolk

The lounge car of the Coast Starlight train offers scenic views between Washington, Oregon and California.

The view from the Coast Starlight just north of the California/Oregon boarder.

The Coast Starlight train doesn't have wifi and often no cell reception. Bring a book to pass the time while enjoying the views.

Portland Union Station in 2020.

A roomette on the Coast Starlight train can sleep two. The two seats fold down and receive a mattress to turn into a bed. There's a second bunk above.

The lounge car of the Coast Starlight train offers scenic views between Washington, Oregon and California. South of Santa Barbara, the train pases oceanfront views.

Dining service on Amtrak is included with a room in a sleeper car. Guests can eat at a table in the dining car or, shown here, eat in their room.

The family room in an Amtrak train (in this case, the Texas Eagle) sleeps four, with two overhead bunks and two floor-level beds that fold out.

If you already had a fear of flying, this isn’t your year to travel.

First there was the pilot charged with attempting to crash a plane that was diverted to Portland International Airport. Then, of course, a door plug fell off a plane somewhere over Washington County. Since then, a number of news articles have convinced me that my flying phobia isn’t so off the mark after all.

So, last month, I spent six days roundtrip traveling via Amtrak from Portland, down to Los Angeles via the scenic Coast Starlight , and east to Houston, Texas, aboard the Texas Eagle and Sunset Limited .

For all but one of the nights on the trains, I traveled first class in a sleeper car, where travelers get a private room with meals included.

My train trip cost a total of about $3,000. A roundtrip flight would have been somewhere in the range of $500.

Was it worth it? To someone with a crippling anxiety around flying, absolutely. Here’s what you can expect on a cross-country Amtrak journey, along with a few tips I learned along the way.

The biggest difference between air and rail travel is the first: the boarding experience.

As a “arrive at the airport two hours before your flight” person, I had no need to stress at the train station. Arriving 15 minutes before departure is plenty of time.

You just walk up to the train when it’s time to board and have your ticket scanned. No security check, no shoes being removed, no one looking at my luggage. I never even showed an ID. (Lest you get any ideas, a police dog did make the rounds in the Los Angeles Union Station lounge.)

The Coast Starlight route has 30 stops along 1,377 miles from Seattle to Los Angeles, cutting across the Cascade Range in Oregon, through Klamath Falls and Sacramento, and eventually traveling along the Pacific Ocean in Southern California. From Portland to L.A., travel time is about 30 hours.

The Coast Starlight’s claim to fame is its lounge car, which is open to all train passengers on a first come, no holds basis. With massive, curved windows that reach into the ceiling, it’s the best way to see the landscape.

(And a bonus for those who feel claustrophobic on planes: every large window doubles as an emergency exit.)

The train passes golf courses and prisons, orchards and oil rigs, cities and tiny towns. It’s a great way to see the country in all its diversity.

There’s a shared awe and camaraderie in the lounge car, where everyone whips out their phones in unison and others beckoning you over for the best views. Those views happen on both sides of the train. If you see a steep incline outside your window, turn around. Odds are there’s a breathtaking cliff and vista on the other side.

In Oregon, you’ll pass Willamette Falls in Oregon City and the 5th Street Public Market in downtown Eugene. In the tiny town of Westfir, you can see the Office Covered Bridge , built in 1944 across the North Fork Middle Fork Willamette River, before climbing through the mountains.

There’s one section where you’ll want to plan ahead to snag a west-facing seat in the lounge car: The tracks between Santa Barbara and Ventura run right along the ocean.

Another thing about Amtrak: You can’t book a seat or a room on a specific side of the train. Because the cars are able to be pulled from either direction, the booking agent won’t be able to tell you whether you’ll be looking east or west on the day of your travel. If you don’t like your window view, check out the lounge car.

Meals in the dining car are included when you book in the sleeper car, but you can purchase them from coach. It’s $20 for breakfast, $25 for lunch and $45 for dinner.

Each dining car booth seats four, and if there aren’t four in your party, there will be at dinner. This was my favorite part of the trip — dining with different strangers for every meal. But if that’s not for you, sleeper car travelers can also get their meals delivered to their rooms. I also heard an attendant offer to deliver meals to people in their coach seats.

Compared with airline food, train food is haute cuisine. It comes on a real plate for starters. I had fresh salads, vegetarian pasta dishes, a burger, and a fabulous blueberry cheesecake.

The trains also had cafe cars, where anyone can purchase snacks, hot meals and drinks, including alcohol. Cash and cards accepted.

First class vs. coach

If you have the resources, an upgrade to a sleeper car for multi-day trips is worth every penny. I had a roomette for much of the trip, which was just enough for a single rider but might be a tight squeeze for two, particularly if either traveler has mobility issues. The two facing seats recline to form a narrow cot; a second cot folds down from an upper bunk. Your car attendant will provide turn-down service and set up your mattress, blankets and pillows.

I spent two days in the family room of the Texas Eagle, which is designed to sleep four but is downright luxurious for one. The room spanned the entire train width and had two windows. Neither space had its own toilet or shower, but the shared facilities in the sleeper car are just fine.

I never had the opportunity to stay in a bedroom , but that comes with two beds, one window, a sink, and a tiny shower/toilet combo bathroom.

I wouldn’t recommend an overnight coach trip. While you can get up, walk around, sit at a cafe table or get some air in the lounge car, you’re ultimately going to spend an entire night trying to sleep next to a stranger.

If you plan to travel via sleeper car, book your tickets far in advance. I had difficulty finding a room for the duration of the Coast Starlight.

The Amtrak website will only allow you to book either coach or first class for the duration of your time on a train, but you might find that a room is available for a shorter segment. I was unable to book a roomette from Los Angeles to Portland, but later learned there had been a room available from Sacramento to Portland. If you can’t find what you’re looking for online, speak to an Amtrak agent by calling 1-800-USA-RAIL.

Train culture

Plane travel is a means to an end. I find it hard to believe that anyone enjoys flying. They do it because they want to be someplace else, and that someplace is not the cabin of a Boeing 747.

Most first-class train travelers, however, are here for the journey. I met lots of retirees who had the time (and financial resources) to slow-travel the country. Some had been on the rails for weeks at a time, stopping at various cities. One fellow passenger, Linda Groover of California, told me the train was the most romantic way to travel.

“I worked for American Airlines for many years,” she said, “and I was exposed to just about every kind of flight you can imagine, including a flight around the world. But when you take a train, you see the land, you see the countryside, you meet the local people, and it’s just far more adventurous. It’s also relaxing.”

Most everyone is happy to chat – under the right circumstances. I had wonderful, engaging conversations with all my dining companions. But those conversations were only obligated to last a half-hour. I was reluctant to even make eye contact with the woman who was my seatmate in coach for 24 hours. No one wants to open that Pandora’s box.

What to bring

Amtrak’s website advertises “free wifi on trains!” but you need to look at the fine print to find out which trains, and those trains do not include the Coast Starlight, Texas Eagle or Sunset Limited.

Not only will you not have wifi, you often won’t have cell service.

Once you accept this, it’s actually quite freeing.

Bring a few books.

Other things to bring:

- An extension cord with multiple outlets. This is helpful in both the rooms (which come with a single outlet) and in coach, where an outlet might be on the other side of your seatmate.

- Small bills to tip the staff, especially in the sleeper car. The car attendant will turn down your bed each evening and schedule reservations for you in the dining car. There are also servers for each meal.

- Flip-flops for the shower, just like those college-dorm days. You’ll only have access to a shower in the sleeper cars, but even coach has a toilet/changing room where you’ll have space to change clothes.

- In coach, bring your own blanket and pillow. These are only provided in the sleeper cars. Wear comfortable shoes or bring slippers to put over your socks in coach. Don’t be the guy who goes shoeless. Ugh.

- Amtrak allows passengers two 50-pound carry-on bags, up to 28-by-22-by-14-inches each, plus a personal item like a briefcase or backpack, for no extra fee. If you’re taking a multi-night train ride, pack the things you’ll need in your personal bag, and either check your big luggage or stow it in the luggage racks. I learned the hard way that a large suitcase won’t fit in a roomette. An Amtrak employee recommended I check my luggage through to Portland while I was in coach so I didn’t have to worry about anyone grabbing my bag from the luggage rack during a random stop.

There’s so much to see along an Amtrak journey. You can stretch your legs either between cars or during several short stops along the way.

“ Slow travel” costs more and takes longer, but if you can’t handle the stress of flying, it’s a great alternative.
