As the central city is fairly compact, one of the best ways to get around is simply walking, exploring the narrow side streets. From east (Higashiyama) to west (Teramachi) would take about an hour at a leisurely pace.
There is a Tourist Information Lobby in the station, with English speaking staff always present, where you can get free maps of the city and help with any questions you may have. ATMs in Japan are becoming more useful, and most can be used to withdraw funds from overseas accounts. Post offices also offer ATMs. Major credit cards are accepted at a majority of stores and restaurants in large urban areas, but if you plan on spending any time in rural areas, be sure to carry sufficient cash. Japan is still very much a cash society and some stores, hotels and restaurants-regardless of location-refuse credit cards.

Kanazawa Port Cruise Terminal
A Historical Port Gateway into Kanazawa
While many visitors come to Kanazawa by way of train from Tokyo or Kyoto, travelers on Japan’s luxury cruise boats will get a warm seafaring welcome with the striking Kanazawa Port Cruise Terminal as their introduction to this rich cultural and artistic city.
Since the Edo period, Kanazawa’s port terminal was the historical sea gateway for traders making port calls along the present-day Osaka to Hokkaido trading route. Throughout the mid-18th to early 20th centuries, the influx of trade led to nearby Kanaiwa and Ono areas prospering into thriving port towns, which maintain much of their original historical charm to this day.
Today, the striking floor-to-ceiling glass facade of Kanazawa Port Cruise Terminal welcomes cruise ship travelers, one of the city’s contemporary contributions to its architectural landscape. The roof features a design evocative of the white foam-capped waves on the Sea of Japan. The deck also offers sensational views of the Sea of Japan. In addition, the terminal is beautifully illuminated at night, with its glass walls turning into a glowing beacon against the night sky.
The Kanaiwa and Ono port towns are within an easy 30-minute walk from the terminal. Even today, the area’s trading heritage is present in the distinctive townscape with rows of soy sauce storehouses still engaged in soy sauce manufacture or converted into stylish galleries and cafés.
The city center is also 30-minutes away by bus, giving efficient access to Kanazawa’s star attractions such as Kenrokuen Garden and Higashi Chaya District for visitors entering through Kanazawa port.

Port of Kanazawa
Kanazawa Port is located on the Sea of Japan side of central Japan, providing easy access to South Korea, Russia and China. This makes it a great destination for cruises all along the Sea of Japan. Kanazawa Port has three wharfs, being able to accommodate up to 160,000-ton cruise ships. The Shinkansen (bullet train) rolled into town in 2015, connecting Kanazawa directly to Tokyo. The easy 2.5-hour train ride has broadened travel possibilities with Kanazawa, not only as a port of call, but also as a turnaround port for rail & cruise, or fly & cruise, via nearby Komatsu airport and the new Kanazawa Port Cruise Terminal which opened on June 1st, 2020.
Another strong point of Kanazawa Port is that it is a mere 5 km (3.1 miles) away from the heart of the city, only 20 minutes by bus. Our most-loved points of interest include locations as diverse as the Higashi Chaya Teahouse District, the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, the Nagamachi Samurai District, and the Omicho Market. Alluring as those destinations are, the true showpiece of Kanazawa has to be Kenrokuen Garden, which delights 3 million visitors annually. In its review of 27 locations in Kanazawa, the Michelin Guide Book awarded Kenrokuen Garden a three-star rating for its elegance and visual harmony.
Kanazawa and its surrounding area are well-known for a number of fascinating tourist attractions as well as prestigious crafts, performing arts, outstanding food culture, healing hot springs and impeccable hospitality. You are sure to find the real Japan here.

Cruises from/to Kanazawa, Japan
Kanazawa, japan cruise port.
- One of the Three Great Gardens of Japan, Kenroku-en was begun in the 17th century. Famous for its landscape featuring streams and ponds, the grounds are open year round and renowned for their beauty no matter what the season. A visit during mid-March will allow you to see the plethora of plum blossoms that blanket the ground.
- Adjacent to the garden, you'll find the historic Kanazawa Castle. Originally built around 1580, the castle was destroyed and rebuilt several times. After a fire in 1881 damaged most of the structure, the remains were incorporated into Kanazawa Castle Park with other sections continuing to go through various reconstructions.
- The Buddhist temple known as Myoryu-ji (also called Ninja-dera or "Ninja Temple") was built around 1585 and originally closer to the castle; it was later moved south of the castle to the Tera-machi district as a shield from intruders of the day. With hidden tunnels, secret rooms, and concealed stairways, this is a popular attraction that requires a guide.
- To step back into the present, visit the spectacular 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art. With a wide range of permanent and traveling exhibits, there's plenty to see both indoors and on the museum grounds.

Kanazawa, Japan
Located on the shores of the Sea of Japan, Kanazawa is a bustling hub with ships arriving and departing for South Korea, Russia and China. The port is just west of the city center—a former samurai town that was once one of the largest in Japan. Like Kyoto, the city escaped bombing in World War II, and its historic buildings provide a glimpse of old Japan. Of the three teahouse ( chaya , in Japanese) neighborhoods, the most famous is the charming Higashi Chaya District. Contemporary Kanazawa has its attractions, too. Sophisticated restaurants serve delicious Kaga cuisine, which highlights the bounty of the sea. ( Kaga is the traditional name for this part of Japan.) Shops sell Kaga-nui pottery, Kutani porcelain and other handicrafts. Major sights include Kenrokuen—a 17th-century garden that is a high point of landscape design in Japan—and Kanazawa Castle and its park. At the Kanazawa Noh Museum, visitors can learn about Noh theater and storytelling, while the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art features both Japanese and international artists (it’s located next to Kenrokuen). Nearby, there are hot springs to bathe in and the natural beauty of the Japanese Alps, Hakusan National Park and Noto Peninsula National Park.

Kanazawa, Japan
Description.
Kanazawa, which means "marsh of gold," draws its name from an old legend in which a Japanese peasant, digging for potatoes, found flakes of gold in the ground. Today, gold leaf is a major art form synonymous with the city, and even has a designated museum. A City of Crafts and Folk Art, Kanazawa is also known for its intricate kaga-nui embroidery and delicate kutani porcelain, among other handicrafts, making it a shopper's paradise! There's also no shortage of history in this coastal city. Once boasting geisha houses and a labyrinthine samurai village, the city was built around Kanazawa Castle. Fire destroyed all but a few small 16th-century castle structures - namely the elegant Ishikawa Gate and some watchtowers that have become a focus of many a photograph today. Just outside the castle park blooms the enchanting Kenroku-en Garden, one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan, and the home of the country's oldest fountain.

Kanazawa: tourist information
Kanazawa is a castle town that was ruled over by the Maeda family
for three centuries after the first lord Toshiie Maeda entered Kanazawa Castle in 1583. The development of its special products like rice, sake, sweets, etc. was due to its temperate and rainy climate with heavy snow in winter. The city is surrounded by the Japan Alps, Hakusan National Park and Noto Peninsula National Park. Two rivers run through the city; the Sai is said to be a lively masculine river and the Asano to be a sweet, feminine river. Such a natural background of great beauty gives the city a relaxed feeling. Since the Kaga Clan invited many artists and craftsmen to this area, it achieved a high level of craftsmanship that continues to flourish to this day.
The buildings that gave birth to these traditions stand tranquilly
and blend in with the modern atmosphere in Kanazawa to create a
charming ancient castle town.

Day1 - Day3 : Stay in Osaka (Visit Osaka, Kobe , Kyoto , Himeiji)
Day4 - Day5 : Stay in Kanazawa (Visit Shirakawago / Takayama )
Day6 - Day7 : Stay in Tokyo (Visit Tokyo)
Day8 : Stay in Kawaguchiko (Visit Mount Fuji )
Day9 : Stay in Hakone
Day10 - Day12 : Stay in Tokyo (Visit other places nearby Tokyo)
1. Planning the above route in view of ease of transportation. We were thinking of using the Hokuriku Arch Pass (Day1-Day7). Is this the most optimal approach?
2. For day8 and day9, we were thinking of traveling with only a backpack to Kawaguchiko and Hakone - Is there any way we can keep our luggage in Tokyo? Will it be too risky to book accommodation up front not knowing the weather condition? Our main aim is Mount Fuji. Or should be continue to stay in Tokyo and make day trip instead?
3. May I please ask if anyone has any good experience with AirBnb in Tokyo which is around the Shinjuku area?

D4/5 - I usually recommend 2 days in Kanazawa , a few hours in Shirakawa-go and o/n in Takayama . A round trip from Kanazawa to Takayama takes over 4 hours by Nohi express bus alone. Not a good idea to spend most of the day travelling on the road. Sunset is before 5pm in Dec.
Hokuriku Arch Pass - it does NOT payoff by simply travelling from Osaka to Tokyo via Kanazawa. Note that it does NOT cover any bus service. Buying single train/bus tickets would be cheaper.

2. it's indeed a bet though chances are higher in winter for clear days. In Japan , send luggage to hotels 1 day in advance, or 2 days to airport.
3. ensure AirBnB is within 10-15 min walk from major train/subway stations, convenience stores etc.
Dear DLi_hk
TQ for the advice.
D4/5 : THanks for the advice. I have yet to calculate the total transportation by individual ticket purchase hence though the Arch Pass is worth the journey. Will reconsider this. As for Takayama , noted on the remarks. I have missed out the 4hrs consideration. In this case, we can skip Takayama as we have been there before, just that the earlier trip we missed the Shin-hokata ropeway and thought of going for it this trip.
AIrbnb : TQ and i will search in the Airbnb platform again.
