Luggage locks vary quite a bit in price, but you won’t find many over $20. It depends on the level of security you’re looking for: Steel shackle locks can run a bit more expensive, as do keyless options that require a card to unlock. Beware of super-inexpensive options—paying a few dollars more on your luggage lock can make all the difference.

Most TSA-approved locks are made of steel, an ultra-durable material. Steer clear of locks made entirely of rubber or plastic and locks with cables that are anything but steel.

There are a few common styles of TSA-approved locks: combination locks, cable locks, and keyless locks. Consider your personal preferences when choosing: Do you constantly lose your keys? Stay away from locks that require one to open. Need a bit of flexibility to lock up a bag with small zipper holds? Look for a super-strong cable lock with a thinner cable. Anxious about someone cracking your combination code? Opt for a card-access lock. 

Every TSA-approved lock will have a red diamond logo, also known as a Travel Sentry logo. This means it’s compatible with the universal keys that TSA agents have to unlock these approved locks.

Not necessarily. Most cable locks are made with durable steel cables—you’d need a heavy-duty wire cutter to break through. Cable Locks

These locks also open with a combination but are more versatile. Cable locks can be used in a variety of situations as they have a semi-flexible cable rather than a stiff metal clip to lock. Bottom Line: Cable locks are a great alternative to regular combination locks as the flexible cable provides extra versatility. 

Retractable Cable Locks

These are similar to cable locks in the sense that you have the option to lock your luggage to a fixed object or other luggage, but these are seemingly more convenient as the cable retracts inside the lock itself. While this sounds great in principle, unfortunately with testing, the locking mechanism seems to fail quite frequently, and to make the cable retractable, the cable itself seems less robust than the cables used in the traditional cable locks.

Bottom Line: Given their tendency to fail and how easy they are to break, retractable cable locks are not recommended.

Key Card Locks

Similar to the cards you use to open hotel doors, key card locks work very similarly. A little bit on the bulky side, these are handy if you want to keep everything in your wallet as the key card will fit nicely in one of your wallet’s credit card folds.

Bottom Line: It’s certainly a personal preference to use these types of locks. Unfortunately, similarly to key locks, if you lose the card, you lose the key, and you will need to cut the lock.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reported it screened over 10 million passengers between July 1 and July 5, setting a new record during the pandemic. And while many travelers are focused on staying safe by wearing a mask on the plane, protecting your personal belongings is important, too. TSA-accepted models come in a variety of models, from key locks to combination locks (the latter feature a slot for those universal “master” keys). You can use the locks on checked or carry-on baggage like luggage, backpacks, duffel bags and more. Some brands also sell luggage with TSA-accepted luggage locks built into the top or side of the bag.

Biden-Harris Administration Announces Final Rule Requiring Automatic Refunds of Airline Tickets and Ancillary Service Fees

Rule makes it easy to get money back for cancelled or significantly changed flights, significantly delayed checked bags, and additional services not provided  

WASHINGTON – The Biden-Harris Administration today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued a final rule that requires airlines to promptly provide passengers with automatic cash refunds when owed. The new rule makes it easy for passengers to obtain refunds when airlines cancel or significantly change their flights, significantly delay their checked bags, or fail to provide the extra services they purchased.

“Passengers deserve to get their money back when an airline owes them - without headaches or haggling,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg . “Our new rule sets a new standard to require airlines to promptly provide cash refunds to their passengers.”  

The final rule creates certainty for consumers by defining the specific circumstances in which airlines must provide refunds. Prior to this rule, airlines were permitted to set their own standards for what kind of flight changes warranted a refund. As a result, refund policies differed from airline to airline, which made it difficult for passengers to know or assert their refund rights. DOT also received complaints of some airlines revising and applying less consumer-friendly refund policies during spikes in flight cancellations and changes. 

Under the rule, passengers are entitled to a refund for:

• Canceled or significantly changed flights: Passengers will be entitled to a refund if their flight is canceled or significantly changed, and they do not accept alternative transportation or travel credits offered. For the first time, the rule defines “significant change.” Significant changes to a flight include departure or arrival times that are more than 3 hours domestically and 6 hours internationally; departures or arrivals from a different airport; increases in the number of connections; instances where passengers are downgraded to a lower class of service; or connections at different airports or flights on different planes that are less accessible or accommodating to a person with a disability.  
• Significantly delayed baggage return: Passengers who file a mishandled baggage report will be entitled to a refund of their checked bag fee if it is not delivered within 12 hours of their domestic flight arriving at the gate, or 15-30 hours of their international flight arriving at the gate, depending on the length of the flight.  
• Extra services not provided: Passengers will be entitled to a refund for the fee they paid for an extra service — such as Wi-Fi, seat selection, or inflight entertainment — if an airline fails to provide this service.

DOT’s final rule also makes it simple and straightforward for passengers to receive the money they are owed. Without this rule, consumers have to navigate a patchwork of cumbersome processes to request and receive a refund — searching through airline websites to figure out how make the request, filling out extra “digital paperwork,” or at times waiting for hours on the phone. In addition, passengers would receive a travel credit or voucher by default from some airlines instead of getting their money back, so they could not use their refund to rebook on another airline when their flight was changed or cancelled without navigating a cumbersome request process.  

The final rule improves the passenger experience by requiring refunds to be:

• Automatic: Airlines must automatically issue refunds without passengers having to explicitly request them or jump through hoops.   
• Prompt: Airlines and ticket agents must issue refunds within seven business days of refunds becoming due for credit card purchases and 20 calendar days for other payment methods.  
• Cash or original form of payment: Airlines and ticket agents must provide refunds in cash or whatever original payment method the individual used to make the purchase, such as credit card or airline miles. Airlines may not substitute vouchers, travel credits, or other forms of compensation unless the passenger affirmatively chooses to accept alternative compensation.    
• Full amount: Airlines and ticket agents must provide full refunds of the ticket purchase price, minus the value of any portion of transportation already used. The refunds must include all government-imposed taxes and fees and airline-imposed fees, regardless of whether the taxes or fees are refundable to airlines.

The final rule also requires airlines to provide prompt notifications to consumers affected by a cancelled or significantly changed flight of their right to a refund of the ticket and extra service fees, as well as any related policies.

In addition, in instances where consumers are restricted by a government or advised by a medical professional not to travel to, from, or within the United States due to a serious communicable disease, the final rule requires that airlines must provide travel credits or vouchers. Consumers may be required to provide documentary evidence to support their request. Travel vouchers or credits provided by airlines must be transferrable and valid for at least five years from the date of issuance.

The Department received a significant number of complaints against airlines and ticket agents for refusing to provide a refund or for delaying processing of refunds during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. At the height of the pandemic in 2020, refund complaints peaked at 87 percent of all air travel service complaints received by DOT. Refund problems continue to make up a substantial share of the complaints that DOT receives.

DOT’s Historic Record of Consumer Protection Under the Biden-Harris Administration

Under the Biden-Harris Administration and Secretary Buttigieg, DOT has advanced the largest expansion of airline passenger rights, issued the biggest fines against airlines for failing consumers, and returned more money to passengers in refunds and reimbursements than ever before in the Department’s history.

• Thanks to pressure from Secretary Buttigieg and DOT’s flightrights.gov dashboard, all 10 major U.S. airlines guarantee free rebooking and meals, and nine guarantee hotel accommodations when an airline issue causes a significant delay or cancellation. These are new commitments the airlines added to their customer service plans that DOT can legally ensure they adhere to and are displayed on flightrights.gov .  
• Since President Biden took office, DOT has helped return more than $3 billion in refunds and reimbursements owed to airline passengers – including over $600 million to passengers affected by the Southwest Airlines holiday meltdown in 2022.   
• Under Secretary Buttigieg, DOT has issued over $164 million in penalties against airlines for consumer protection violations. Between 1996 and 2020, DOT collectively issued less than $71 million in penalties against airlines for consumer protection violations.  
• DOT recently launched a new partnership with a bipartisan group of state attorneys general to fast-track the review of consumer complaints, hold airlines accountable, and protect the rights of the traveling public.  
• In 2023, the flight cancellation rate in the U.S. was a record low at under 1.2% — the lowest rate of flight cancellations in over 10 years despite a record amount of air travel.  
• DOT is undertaking its first ever industry-wide review of airline privacy practices and its first review of airline loyalty programs.

In addition to finalizing the rules to require automatic refunds and protect against surprise fees, DOT is also pursuing rulemakings that would:

• Propose to ban family seating junk fees and guarantee that parents can sit with their children for no extra charge when they fly. Before President Biden and Secretary Buttigieg pressed airlines last year, no airline committed to guaranteeing fee-free family seating. Now, four airlines guarantee fee-free family seating, and the Department is working on its family seating junk fee ban proposal.  
• Propose to make passenger compensation and amenities mandatory so that travelers are taken care of when airlines cause flight delays or cancellations.   
• Expand the rights for passengers who use wheelchairs and ensure that they can travel safely and with dignity . The comment period on this proposed rule closes on May 13, 2024.

There are different implementation periods in this final rule ranging from six months for airlines to provide automatic refunds when owed to 12 months for airlines to provide transferable travel vouchers or credits when consumers are unable to travel for reasons related to a serious communicable disease.

#1 – State Hermitage Museum – Possibly one of the most important places to visit in St. Petersburg

Why it’s awesome: No St. Petersburg itinerary is complete without a visit to the State Hermitage Museum. Not only is it one of the most astounding hermitage museums in Russia, but the entire world!

I’d recommend setting aside a whole day for visiting St. Petersburg’s Hermitage Museum. Incredibly, there are over 3 million works from around the world here! If you are short of time, you can marvel at the incredible outside facade from the palace square, as the building itself is just as beautiful as the exhibits inside.

The main building is the Winter Palace, which houses Greek and Roman antiquities, centuries of European art, and the staterooms of the Russian Imperial family from the 18th and 19th centuries! The whole palace is full of russian art and historic pieces that are truly special to this museum.

If you liked the Winter Palace, Catherine Palace is another marble palace worth checking out. It’s the summer residence of the Russian tsars and is a World Heritage Site. The building itself is stunning as the stucco details are drowned in gold. The north-side carriage courtyard is particularly stunning. But, it is a bit of a distance out of the city center so if you are running low on time and can only see one, go to the State Hermitage Museum.

What to do there: If you aren’t blessed with a lot of time for the museum, take a guided tour to see the highlights. One of the most curious things you won’t want to miss is the peacock clock.

The mechanical 18th century automated clock still sings today. It’s the largest example of 18th-century robotics that has survived to the present day without any alterations!

Some housekeeping – since the museum is so big it’s a great idea to get a map which covers the 6 buildings. That way, you can choose the things you’re most interested in.

It’s absolutely impossible to see everything! Also, the museum can get very popular in summer, so consider purchasing skip the line tickets!

#2 – Mariinsky Theatre

• See a ballet performance from the “Imperial Ballet of Russia”
• A world-class concert hall
• One of the most renowned cultural attractions in St. Petersburg

Why it’s awesome: This huge theatre is one of the most famous in the world. Built-in the 19th century, for over 150 years it has hosted some of the best actors, performers, and dancers in the world.

Although you can see operas and plays at the Mariinsky, it’s best known for ballet. In fact, this used to be known as the Imperial Ballet of Russia, so that should give you some idea of how revered it was (and still is)! Recently, the theatre has expanded.

In 2006, it added the concert hall and a second stage for opera and ballet in 2013!

What to do there: If you’re limited on a budget or time, you may not be able to extend to a show at the Mariisnky Theatre.

Although that’s a shame, it doesn’t mean you have to miss out completely. We’d definitely recommend taking a tour around the grand auditorium, one of the most beautiful and richly decorated in the world.

If your budget does cover it, don’t miss a show at this incredible place off your St. Petersburg itinerary. It’s also a great place to admire from the outside. Make sure you get pictures of the colourful buildings from Theatre Square!

#3 – Saviour on the Spilled Blood – One of the best religious places to see in St. Petersburg

• Home to one of the world’s biggest collections of mosaics
• One of the most recognizable landmarks in St. Petersburg

Why it’s awesome: This incredible church known as Savior on Spilled Blood, was built on the site where Tsar Alexander II was killed in an attack, which explains its macabre and graphic name of “spilled blood”.

Although St. Petersburg is filled with churches, this is arguably the most beautiful, and the reason it’s made it onto our list! The colourful church is just as bright and gaudy on the inside, where you’ll find one of the world’s biggest collection of mosaics.

Most people compare this to St Basil’s Cathedral in Russia, another of the country’s most famous landmarks!

What to do there: Any guided tour of the city will take you past the Saviour of the Spilled Blood Cathedral. Probably more than once! That’s because it’s right by the State Russian Museum, and plenty of other attractions are nearby. Also, Alexander II was a very important figure in Russian history.

If you have time, it’s definitely worth getting an hour-long audio tour of the church. It’ll tell you about the church’s history and construction.

Another religious building well worth your time when you travel to St. Petersburg is St Isaac’s Cathedral and Colonnade. It’s easily recognizable by its golden dome!

#4 – Peterhof Palace – A beautiful and scenic place to check out in St. Petersburg

• Once the main summer residence of the Russian Tsars
• Excellent location overlooking the Gulf of Finland
• Have a picnic in the Lower Park

Why it’s awesome: Since it’s located 45 minutes from the city, you’ll need to dedicate at least half a day to visiting Peterhof Palace. However, it’s well worth it!

Situated on the Gulf of Finland, this opulent palace is also known as the “Russian Versailles”. It’s not hard to see why, whether that’s down to the gilded domes, or the fountains throughout the extensive landscaped gardens.

Unbelievably, there are more than 60 fountains and 200 sculptures throughout the gardens at Peterhof. The most famous, The Grand Cascade, is one of the must-see St. Petersburg attractions!

What to do there: Don’t miss going inside the stunning Peterhof Palace. Classic staterooms, the ornate Ceremonial Staircase, and the Grand Ballroom are just some of the highlights of the interior.

Outside, there’s more to the gardens than just the incredible selection of fountains! The Lower Park has a canal that empties straight out into the Gulf of Finland and is a great spot to have a picnic.

Like many other St Petersburg attractions on this list, Peterhof gets very busy in summer. It’s definitely worth booking your ticket in advance, especially if they enable you to skip the queues!

#5 – Tsarskoye Selo and the Amber Room

Why it’s awesome: By now, you’ve probably realized that the palaces in St. Petersburg are pretty extravagant. It’s possible that the 18th century Tsarskoye Selo is the most opulent and lavish of them all, built for Empress Elizabeth by the architect responsible for the Winter Palace, Bartolomeo Rastrelli.

It’s a day trip out of the city, to the town of Pushkin, widely regarded as one of the prettiest neighbourhoods in St. Petersburg. The Amber Room is undoubtedly a highlight. Thought to be lost forever in the Second World War, the painstaking reconstruction of the room is impressive nonetheless!

What to do there: As well as visiting Tsarskoye Selo, while you’re in Pushkin there are a few other cool places to check out.

One of the top attractions in St. Petersburg is Catherine Palace, where you’ll find the Amber Room. Attached to that is also the Catherine garden, which is landscaped with a variety of English, French, and Italian techniques.

If you want to find somewhere a little quieter to escape to, check out Alexander Park. They’re a little more overgrown and spread out, but there are some interesting buildings hidden away in there!

#6 – Museum of Hygiene – Quite the quirky place to visit in St. Petersburg

Why it’s awesome: Yes, St. Petersburg is fascinating. However, if you’re just visiting palaces and cathedrals, it’s definitely not out of the question that you’ll get palace fatigue. You can only take so much of walking around all those long hallways and being astounded by art after all!

For a perfect tonic, head to the unusual Museum of Hygiene. It was established in the early 20th century to educate the city’s locals on good health practices. It’s especially worth a visit if you want to learn about the gruesome medical practices from the turn of the last century!

What to do there: There’s plenty to see in the display cabinets here that you won’t find anywhere else in St. Petersburg! Check out both female and male models with movable internal organs, wax anatomy models, and even some displays explaining the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

Perhaps don’t eat before you visit here! One of the coolest displays you’ll see is Pavlov’s taxidermy dog. This may not be one of the most famous places in St. Petersburg, but it’s certainly worth a visit. Especially if you’re into science!

#7 – Grand Maket Rossiya (Grand Model of Russia) – One of the more unique places to visit in St. Petersburg

• Rent binoculars to see the whole scale of this cool recreation of Russia

Why it’s awesome: If you don’t have time to cover all 17 million kilometres of Russia (and let’s face it, who does?), then this is your next best opportunity! The Grand Model of Russia is the second biggest model in the world after Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg.

It’s not entirely to scale, but it does mean you can visit Moscow, the Ural Mountains, and Vladivostok all on the same day! There is 2.5km of train tracks which miniature trains run on, and over half a million LED lights, which you’re guaranteed to see as a day only lasts 15 minutes!

What to do there: Russia is so big that it may not even be possible to get around the whole model of it one day! If that’s the case, rent a pair of binoculars so you can take in the whole of this amazing model. If you do have a bit more time, fantastic.

You can have a go at controlling some parts of the model yourself! There are buttons on the side where you can control the speeds of the cars and trains in the model. Sometimes it’s just enough to watch what’s going on though.

Old women feeding their chickens, a tiny UFO, and escaping prisoners are all part of one of the most unusual attractions in St. Petersburg!

#8 – Nevsky Prospekt

Why it’s awesome: One of the most bustling streets you’ll find anywhere, the central avenue Nevsky Prospekt is considered one of the greatest streets in the world.

As well as the Hermitage and the Mariinsky theatre, you’ll find some places that didn’t make our list of the best places to visit in St. Petersburg but are still worth your time!

These include Kazan Cathedral, the House of Books, and the Eliseyev Emporium. Just be careful when you’re crossing – much of the street is 4 lanes on each side!

What to do there: If you’re visiting St. Petersburg, you’re bound to end up on this thoroughfare at some point. It was originally planned as one of the roads to Moscow but is now one of the central points of restaurants for tourists!

If you want to walk the whole length of Nevsky Prospekt, you’ll need at least two hours, and possibly a little more if you’re to take in its major sights.

As well as historical and cultural sites, make sure to stop off to window shop at some of the city’s most exclusive boutiques, or sample Russian delicacies at the best places to eat in St. Petersburg.

#9 – St. Petersburg Metro – A great place to see in St. Petersburg if you love architecture

Why it’s awesome: St. Petersburg’s rapid transit system is about more than just getting from A to B. The stations here are opulent and rival the palaces and cathedrals above ground for their intricate architecture.

Although walking is often the best way to see a city, don’t miss out on taking the metro – even if it’s just to be astounded by the beauty of the stations!

What to do there: Moscow’s subway was the first built in Russia and St. Petersburg’s system was designed to mimic its beautiful architecture.

All 8 lines on the first line built-in 1955 are considered places of cultural significance. Check out the grand marble and glass columns of Avtovo Station and the sport-themed Sportivnaya. Spending a day on the metro may seem boring, but not here in St. Petersburg!

#10 – Slam City – A great place to visit in St. Petersburg at night!

Why it’s awesome: Saint-Brooklynsburg is a cassette-focused Russian record label, but what on earth is that? Well, it’s responsible for one of the coolest additions to the city’s nightlife scene.

The music mixes American-style garage rock with old-school cassettes to give a very distinctive sound. The club has super cool décor, and it’s the perfect place to spend a party at night after a day visiting the museums and palaces of the city!

What to do there: Don’t miss a live performance from one of the coolest bands on the city’s music scene! The dress code is pretty extravagant, so make sure you pick out your brightest colours to fit in!

Slam City is at its most vibrant and raucous on a weekend, so go then if you can. It’s a St. Petersburg must-do if you want to experience the city’s alternative music scene!

#11 – Peter and Paul Fortress – The city’s historic citadel

• Intricate Baroque detailing throughout

Why it’s awesome: The Peter and Paul fortress is the original citadel of the city found on a small island facing the Neva River. It was built in 1703 by Peter the Great when the Russian empire was the strongest empire in Eastern Europe. For a long time, it served as a prison for political criminals, from the early 1700s until the early 1920s.

It was designed by Domenico Trezzini, Peter’s court architect and the pioneer of the Petrine Baroque style that was introduced by the Russian Empire. The complex has six bastions (each named after close associates of Peter) with intertwining stone curtain walls. The structures have been adapted and embellished over the years, and while it is beautiful, whether it was actually a good defensive structure has been up for debate.

Within the fortress is the Peter and Paul Cathedral, which was one of the first buildings to have been made. Originally it was made of wood and consecrated on 1 April 1704, but it was eventually replaced with stone a decade or so later.

What to do here: You can wander around the entirety of the Peter and Paul Fortress and visit the cathedral inside. The whole complex isn’t huge, it’s like a village inside a high wall, but it has a lot of intricate detailing that you might like to stop and marvel at.

It’s located right in the heart of the city center so it’s one of the best Saint Petersburg attractions to visit for a short stop-over. Across the river you will find the Palace Bridge, leading to Palace Square and the State Russian Museum.

Manor Lords: All unit types and how to recruit them to your army

Though medieval city-builder Manor Lords is not intended to rival Total War or Age of Empires, it does feature a combat system and throws threats like bandit incursions or battles against fellow lords in your way to spice up the peaceful settlement development at its core.

However, armies are still intricately linked with your settlements: Every soldier you field is one of the townspeople living under your protection. While they’re out on military service, they can’t get any of their regular work done. If they die, they leave not just a hole in the hearts of their families, but also in your economy. Likewise, all the gear your troops use must be physically present in your settlements and either be produced there or imported. Your approval rating amongst the people feeds into military matters as well, as troops will have higher morale if they like living under your rule.

A healthy town leads to a strong military in Manor Lords, so be sure to check out our beginner tips to get the foundations right. As for what unit types Manor Lords has to offer and how to get them recruited into your army , you can find out all about that below.

All unit types in Manor Lords and how to recruit them

Units in Manor Lords are generally divided into two categories – militia and mercenaries. We’ll begin with the militia category, as it’s the one you’ll rely on for much of the early game.

• Militia Footmen – requires Sidearms, Small Shields, and 36 men
• Spear Militia – requires Spears, Large Shields, and 36 men
• Polearm Militia – requires Polearms, and 36 men
• Archer Militia – requires Warbows, and 36 men
• Retinue – no gear and manpower requirements

Militia troops are raised from the men of your settlements and equip themselves with the gear stored in their houses. Each unit is generally formed from 36 individuals, so to field one unit of Militia Footmen you’ll need 36 men, 36 Sidearms, and 36 Small Shields. Learn how to grow your population in order to field larger armies.

The military panel easily lets you recruit new units or hire mercenaries.

Slavic Magic / Hooded Horse

In addition, all troops can be equipped with Helmets, Gambesons, and Mail Armor to boost their effectiveness in combat – but consider these a bonus. Units can still be raised and set to battle without this protective equipment.

There is also the Retinue, a heavy infantry unit consisting of professionals living at your Manor. After building a Manor (and not just the first one; each Manor comes with its own Retinue unit), you initially get five of these men with the option to hire up to a dozen. By building a Garrison Tower at your Manor, you can increase their unit size limit to 24. You don’t need to provide your Retinue with equipment and instead hire them fully equipped in exchange for Treasure.

You can already customize the looks of your Retinue. In the future, these men will be able to gain different skill sets.

Which gets us to the second category of army units in the game – mercenaries. They are not formed from townsfolk and you won’t need to provide them with gear either. Instead, you hire them by paying Treasure – ideally for a short time, as costs quickly mount up.

• Light Mercenary Footmen
• Light Mercenary Spears
• Light Mercenary Archers
• Heavy Mercenary Archers

Mercenaries always come as part of Mercenary Companies.

Naturally, using mercenaries in combat has the advantage of not putting your loyal subjects into danger and ensures that you’re fielding experienced veterans – your militia won’t quite have the discipline a strong mercenary outfit does.

Could Trump Go to Prison? If He Does, the Secret Service Goes, Too

Officials have had preliminary discussions about how to protect the former president in the unlikely event that he is jailed for contempt during the trial.

The U.S. Secret Service is in the business of protecting the president, whether he’s inside the Oval Office or visiting a foreign war zone.

But protecting a former president in prison? The prospect is unprecedented. That would be the challenge if Donald J. Trump — whom the agency is required by law to protect around the clock — is convicted at his criminal trial in Manhattan and sentenced to serve time.

Even before the trial’s opening statements, the Secret Service was in some measure planning for the extraordinary possibility of a former president behind bars. Prosecutors had asked the judge in the case to remind Mr. Trump that attacks on witnesses and jurors could land him in jail even before a verdict is rendered.

(The judge, who held a hearing Tuesday morning to determine whether Mr. Trump should be held in contempt for violating a gag order, is far more likely to issue a warning or impose a fine before taking the extreme step of jailing the 77-year-old former president. It was not immediately clear when he would issue his ruling.)

Last week, as a result of the prosecution’s request, officials with federal, state and city agencies had an impromptu meeting about how to handle the situation, according to two people with knowledge of the matter.

That behind-the-scenes conversation — involving officials from the Secret Service and other relevant law enforcement agencies — focused only on how to move and protect Mr. Trump if the judge were to order him briefly jailed for contempt in a courthouse holding cell, the people said.

The far more substantial challenge — how to safely incarcerate a former president if the jury convicts him and the judge sentences him to prison rather than home confinement or probation — has yet to be addressed directly, according to some of a dozen current and former city, state and federal officials interviewed for this article.

That’s at least in part because if Mr. Trump is ultimately convicted, a drawn-out and hard-fought series of appeals, possibly all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court, is almost a certainty. That would most likely delay any sentence for months if not longer, said several of the people, who noted that a prison sentence was unlikely.

But the daunting challenge remains. And not just for Secret Service and prison officials, who would face the logistical nightmare of safely incarcerating Mr. Trump, who is also the presumptive Republican nominee for President.

“Obviously, it’s uncharted territory,” said Martin F. Horn, who has worked at the highest levels of New York’s and Pennsylvania’s state prison agencies and served as commissioner of New York City’s correction and probation departments. “Certainly no state prison system has had to deal with this before, and no federal prison has had to either.”

Steven Cheung, the communications director for Mr. Trump’s campaign, said the case against the former president was “so spurious and so weak” that other prosecutors had refused to bring it, and called it “an unprecedented partisan witch hunt.”

“That the Democrat fever dream of incarcerating the nominee of the Republican Party has reached this level exposes their Stalinist roots and displays their utter contempt for American democracy,” he said.

Protecting Mr. Trump in a prison environment would involve keeping him separate from other inmates, as well as screening his food and other personal items, officials said. If he were to be imprisoned, a detail of agents would work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, rotating in and out of the facility, several officials said. While firearms are obviously strictly prohibited in prisons, the agents would nonetheless be armed.

Former corrections officials said there were several New York state prisons and city jails that have been closed or partly closed, leaving wings or large sections of their facilities empty and available. One of those buildings could serve to incarcerate the former president and accommodate his Secret Service protective detail

Anthony Guglielmi, the spokesman for the Secret Service in Washington, declined in a statement to discuss specific “protective operations.” But he said that federal law requires Secret Service agents to protect former presidents, adding that they use state-of-the-art technology, intelligence and tactics to do so.

Thomas J. Mailey, a spokesman for New York State’s prison agency, said his department couldn’t speculate about how it would treat someone who has not yet been sentenced, but that it has a system “to assess and provide for individuals’ medical, mental health and security needs.” Frank Dwyer, a spokesman for the New York City jails agency, said only that “the department would find appropriate housing” for the former president.

The trial in Manhattan, one of four criminal cases pending against Mr. Trump and possibly the only one that will go to a jury before the election, centers on accusations he falsified records to cover up a sex scandal involving a porn star. The former president is charged with 34 counts of felony falsifying business records. If convicted, the judge in the case, Juan M. Merchan, could sentence him to punishments ranging from probation to four years in state prison, though for a first-time offender of Mr. Trump’s age, such a term would be extreme.

If Mr. Trump is convicted, but elected president again, he could not pardon himself because the prosecution was brought by New York State.

Under normal circumstances, any sentence of one year or less, colloquially known as “city time,” would generally be served on New York City’s notorious Rikers Island, home to the Department of Correction’s seven jails. (That’s where Mr. Trump’s former chief financial officer, Allen H. Weisselberg, 76, is currently serving his second five-month sentence for crimes related to his work for his former boss.)

Any sentence of more than a year, known as state time, would generally be served in one of the 44 prisons run by New York State’s Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.

The former president could also be sentenced to a term of probation, raising the bizarre possibility of the former commander in chief reporting regularly to a civil servant at the city’s Probation Department.

He would have to follow the probation officer’s instructions and answer questions about his work and personal life until the term of probation ended. He would also be barred from associating with disreputable people, and if he committed any additional crimes, he could be jailed immediately.

Pinellas Trail: Treasured bike trail from St. Pete north

The Pinellas Trail is a treasure, and anyone lucky enough to live near it has access to what is probably the best urban bike trail in Florida.

It’s not perfect – it’s not always scenic and riders will experience lots of stops at intersections as the trail crosses road after road.

But how can you complain when you find a wide, paved, well-marked trail that extends for 54 miles through one of the most densely populated areas in the state? I wish it were in my county!

My husband and I bicycled a section of the Pinellas Trail while exploring the spectacular beaches on barrier islands north of St. Petersburg.  We took the universal advice you find online: That the most scenic part of the trail is its northern portion, between Dunedin and Tarpon Springs.

We found pretty views, parks to discover, historic buildings and cute downtowns. We also found plenty of suburban backyards, the back-sides of businesses, boring views of commercial roadways and shadelessness.

The Pinellas Trail is a mixed bag, so set your expectations accordingly.

Pinellas Trail was built first to make bicycling safer

The Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail starts in downtown St. Petersburg and follows the old CSX railway right of way for 50 miles to Tarpon Springs and on to the Pasco County line.  Its story began in 1983, inspired by the vision of a man whose son was killed riding his bike. The first six-mile section opened in 1990, and it’s been expanding ever since.

It is heartening to see how much it is used, and by all sorts of people. With a separate, well-marked pedestrian lane, it attracts and comfortably accommodates dog-walkers, joggers, wheelchairs and strollers.

You’ll see every type of bicyclist – some poking along on training wheels; others whizzing by on recumbent bikes.  With more than 1.5 million users a year, the Pinellas Trail ranks as one of the most heavily used rail-trails in America, according to the Rails to Trails Conservancy.

We enjoyed exploring the Pinellas Trail, particularly the opportunity to stop at interesting spots along the way.

Highlights on the northern section of the Pinellas Trail:

• Dunedin’s downtown , where the Pinellas Trail serves as a “main thoroughfare” because the downtown grew up around the old railroad tracks. Local merchants have embraced the trail, catering to the steady stream of visitors it brings. In cute and historic Dunedin, you’ll find a great variety of ice cream shops, coffee shops, restaurants and breweries, some facing directing on “the Trail,” as residents call it. Here’s our guide to visiting Dunedin , a great base for biking the trail. (Dunedin is 25.7 miles from the start of the trail in St. Petersburg.)

• Weaver Park , just north of Dunedin, where you look through a shaded picnic grove to a view of the Gulf. If you take a short detour off the Pinellas Trail and cross the park and Bayshore Drive, you can head out to the free 725-foot fishing pier with expansive views .
• The Pinellas Trail spur to Honeymoon Island State Park , which runs along the Dunedin Causeway. The trail offers a safe way for bicyclists to pedal to the beach and enjoy scenic views of St. Joseph Sound.

• Wall Springs County Park , a shady spot for a picnic right off the Pinellas Trail a few miles north of Dunedin. Wall Springs was a historical, natural spring, once used as a spa and swimming area. Today, there’s a boardwalk around the old spring with interesting displays explaining the history. (Sorry, no swimming though.) This park is a trailhead on the Pinellas Trail.
• The  sponge docks in Tarpon Springs . This touristy few blocks along the Anclote River is full of Greek restaurants. It’s just a few moments detour from the Pinellas Trail.
• North Anclote River Nature Park , near the northern end of the trail in Tarpon Springs. Another spur off the Pinellas Trail heads into a wooded park with shell-rock trails winding around waterways.

Planning your ride on the Pinellas Trail

Pinellas County has done a lot of things right with this trail, and one of them is the extensive, helpful information available. Each section of the trail has a detailed guide, with a map and information about parking, water fountains, restrooms, bike rental and repair shops, restaurants, lodging and more. I printed out this information to plan our trip and used it the whole way. If you’re planning a trip on the Pinellas Trail, I recommend you spend time with this material to plan your route.

As I researched which section of the Pinellas Trail to ride, I found residents expressed concerns about the safety and attractiveness of southern sections of the trail once you leave downtown St. Pete.

One of the most popular sections is the quarter-mile-long Cross Bayou Bridge which spans Boca Ciega Bay. The $4 million bridge was built specifically for the Pinellas Trail — that’s right, no vehicles at all — and the views are terrific.

The Pinellas Trail is generally 15-feet wide and paved with asphalt or concrete. It is flat, except for 10 overpasses and a few hills in Miles 37 and 40 in Tarpon Springs.

More tips on Pinellas Trail

• The Pinellas Trail is rolling out a change in its traffic flow. For the past 30 years, cyclists rode on one side of the trail and pedestrians used the other side. Now, everyone will use the trail on their right-hand side and pass on the left, as drivers do on the roadways. Some users of the trail have objected, but trail managers say this approach is what is used on most paved trails and it works well.
• Cylists looking to cover a distance sometimes bike the whole trail in one direction, stay overnight in Tarpon Springs, and pedal back the next day.
• In our experience, drivers were very courteous to bikers at intersections. Still, you have to slow down and/or stop frequently as you cross streets, which may be a frustration for those who work up some speed.
• Despite its amenities, come prepared with cell phone, extra water and sun screen.
• Does the Pinellas Trail allow electric bikes? The Pinellas Trail permits e-bikes that require a combination of human power and electric motor power. There is a 20-mile-per-hour speed limit.
• Want a trail that is less urban? The Pinellas Trail isn’t the only long, paved bike trail in the region. We love the Withlachoochee Trail , which starts six miles north of Dade City and runs through forests and rural hamlets.
• The Pinellas Trail connects in downtown St. Petersburg with the beautiful North Bay Trail. This multiuse trail extends six miles north from where it meets the Pinellas Trail at First Avenue Southeast at Bayshore Drive, where the Pinellas Trail originates. The first three miles of the North Bay Trail are along a scenic path that hugs the bay with views of parks and historic homes. • The Pinellas Trail is part of a growing network of bike trails . There will soon be a completed Pinellas Trail Loop. An eastern portion of the loop is being developed that will use powerline corridors and roadsides instead of abandoned railroads. More than 20 miles have been completed. The Pinellas Trail also will form the western end of the 250-mile Florida Coast-to-Coast Trail connecting Titusville and St. Petersburg. It is 88 percent complete!

Enjoyed Pinellas trail ride, Pasco county line to St. Pete and return next day. The 12 bike overpasses were wonderful.

They need to ban the e-bikes from the trail, especially in the Dunedin area where riders rent bikes and pay no attention to the other riders on bicycles and pedestrians. I’ve been sideswiped more than a few times by e-bike riders that either pass without allowing for enough room and by groups of people that ride 3 or more abreast. The trail was made to be a safe place to ride and walk, and even before e-bikes were allowed there was still a lot of close calls, now it’s made worse by these “mopeds”.

Just got back from a 5 day trip to Indian Shores. The beach and pool were nice, but the riding on the trail was awesome. We did Dunedin to Klostermsn Rd and back twice, Belleview Rd by Belleair Country Club to the St Petersburg’s KOA the other 2 times. The section up north of Dunedin is really getting bumpy. It’s just generally a rough road. Love to visit the breweries in Dunedin on the way back. HOB is great. But the bumps are rough on the neck.

The section south of Belleair Contry Club to the KOA is in better condition. I like this section better, there seems to be less cross roads, definitely less traffic at the cross roads. There is also more shade. A tad bit more sketchy here, but I never felt unsafe and saw a lot of people older than me on bikes. But seeing drunks sitting on the benches smoking and drinking, and people standing near the trail looking at you with a mischievous look, and were obviously not there biking or exercising was something I didn’t see on the north end. Biking partner suspected drug deals going down, but who knows?

This is in the top three of my favorite bike trails. The best being the Neuse River Trail in Raleigh, and second best, the Legacy Trail south of Sarasota.
