UCI MTB World Cup Petropolis: Schurter wins the opening round in Brazil

Mountain bike world champion Nino Schurter (Scott SRAM) finally matched the record of 33 World Cup wins held by Julien Absalon on Saturday in Petropolis, Brazil. 

Schurter has been chasing this goal since 2019, and it came down to a sprint finish against Maxime Marotte (Santa Cruz FSA). Vlad Dascalu (Trek Factory) took third.  Schurter also dons the World Cup leader's jersey after his win in the opening round . It was beginning to look like Schurter might never catch his legendary French rival, with a pandemic-shortened 2020 season and numerous near misses in 2021. The very technical Petropolis course through the Brazilian rainforest was suited to Schurter's bike handling skills, and he spent the first half of the seven lap race following other riders in the strength-sapping heat and humidity. Ondrej Cink (Kross Orlen) set the early fast pace that stretched out the field, with Schurter and hometown favourite Henrique Avancini (Cannondale Factory) on his wheel. Cink started to fade by the third lap and the lead group was down to five a lap later – Schurter, Dascalu, Marotte, Avancini and Friday's short track winner, Alan Hatherly (Cannondale Factory). The two Cannondale riders were dropped by the end of the lap under the relentless pace, leaving the final three at the front.

Marotte and Dascalu took turns setting the pace while Schurter was content to sit on their wheels. Marotte was dropped at one point by the other two in the last lap and a half, but fought his way back, as Schurter finally took charge on the last lap, leading up the climbs but unable to shake either of his rivals.

On the final short, sharp climb before the descent to the finish, Schurter looked to be in charge, but as Dascalu faded, Marotte surged into the lead, with a slight gap into the descent. It looked like Schurter would be denied again, but on the final 100 metre flat run-in to the finish line he managed to chase down and catch Marotte, finally filling the hole in his palmares.

Afterwards, he was overcome with emotion, waving away interviewers as he wept.

"It took me three years to get this World Cup victory, my 33rd," said Schurter. "To do it in front of such a nice crowd and in such a tight battle with Maxime ... I almost lost again in the last metres, but I didn't give up. It's a sweet one, yeah.

"This was one of my last big goals, to catch up with Julien in World Cup wins, and now we have both 33, and that's quite nice. I think to do it now, after the last two years, it is good for the sport and on this new track in Brazil is awesome. 

"For sure I had doubts sometimes – I'm not getting younger – so it's nice that I can still win races at my age."

2025 Early bird entries SOLD OUT

The highly anticipated early bird entries for the 2025 Absa Cape Epic sold out as soon as they became available. Since its inception in 2004, the Absa Cape Epic has consistently sold out, and this Monday was no exception. Many eager participants were poised and counting the seconds until registration opened at 3 pm.

A fitting and fine Grand Finale

Coetzenberg Stadium in Stellenbosch played host to a fitting final stage of the 20th Absa Cape Epic. The stage over 67km with 2000m of climbing saw dynamic, aggressive racing in all the categories and featured the coldest conditions of the week. The contrast to the heat of the week was fitting and indicative of what it takes to complete this race. Every rider who crossed the line at the Grand Finale after 603km and nearly 16 050m of climbing has a very special place in The Book of Legend.

After a week of tactical racing, the undisputed powerhouses of 2024 however, was the team of Matthew Beers and Howard Grotts (Toyota-Specialized-NinetyOne) winning two stages to lay claim to the Yellow Leader Jerseys and adding to the Specialized legacy and trophy cabinet.

Beers and Grotts Grab The Gold and Debut Delight For GHOST Factory Racing

Simon Schneller and Urs Huber (BULLS Mavericks) won Stage 7 - the Grand Finale - of the Absa Cape Epic men’s race, but it was Matt Beers and Howard Grotts of Toyota-Specialized-NinetyOne who claimed the overall title at the 2024 event. 

In the Aramex Women’s Category, Anne Terpstra and Nicole Koller (GHOST Factory Racing) won an eighth stage in a row on their way to the 2024 Absa Cape Epic title. By winning every stage of the 2024 race (the Prologue and seven stages), the Dutch-Swiss combo matched the performance of Laura Stigger and Sina Frei, who also won eight stages on their way to the 2021 title. 

With some tired bodies and minds amongst the elite riders - leader Matt Beers admitting to lack of sleep and stomach issues on the finish line - the early pace on the 67km, Stellenbosch Stage 7 loop was sedate by the past week’s standards.

Cool Temperatures, Hot Racing

A damp, cool morning in Stellenbosch provided a welcome respite from a week of blistering temperatures for riders on the penultimate stage of the Absa Cape Epic. Stage 6 was a testing challenge over 87km with 2400 metres of climbing featuring some of the spectacular singletrack trail network in the Stellenbosch Winelands. The route saw riders pass twice through Muratie Wine Estate in the Knorhoek Valley on the slopes of Simonsberg Mountain. From there it took in some of Dirtopia’s best riding, before heading for Stellenbosch along Morgenhof’s new singletracks. The Idas Valley trails provided a last treat before the final test up the steep Botmaskop climb before they came home to the spectacular race village in the natural amphitheatre that is Coetzenberg. 

Toyota-Specialized-NinetyOne and GHOST Factory racing once again dominated their categories, winning the stage and extending their leads in the overall general classification at the same time, while there were loads of punctures and mechanicals behind them. The attrition continued further back in the field proving just why this race is not over until you roll over the line at the Grand Finale.

Penultimate Stage Proves Pivotal At 2024 Absa Cape Epic

It appears that only major disasters can prevent Toyota-Specialized-NinetyOne (Matt Beers and Howard Grotts) and GHOST Factory Racing (Anne Terpstra and Nicole Koller) from winning the Men’s and Aramex Women’s Category respectively at the 2024 Absa Cape Epic.

On the 87km Stage 6 in Stellenbosch, the event’s penultimate day of racing, Toyota-Specialized-NinetyOne and GHOST Factory racing once again dominated their categories, winning the stage and extending their leads in the overall general classification at the same time.

Beers and Grotts go into Sunday’s Stage 7, known as the Grand Finale, nine minutes clear of second-placed World Bicycle Relief (Nino Schurter and Sebastian Fini) in the general classification, while in the Aramex Women’s Category, Terpstra and Koller hold a lead of just under four minutes over Cannondale Factory Racing (Candice Lill and Mona Mitterwallner) with the final day of racing to come.

Chasing Legends: Sergey Yakubanets On A Journey To An Epic Legends Medal

When the field rolled off the start line at the Prologue in Lourensford on Sunday 17 March, there were 11 Epic Legends ‘in waiting’ who took to the trails in a bid to add yet another Epic Series finish to their palmarès and add their names to the Legends Hall of Fame. One of those almost legends was Swiss masters rider Sergey Yakubanets.

Between Yakubanets and his unique Epic Legend medal, lay some 603 Untamed kilometres and some 16050 metres of climbing. Epic Legend status is reserved for riders who have completed three Epic Series Legend events, including an Absa Cape Epic. Yakubanets had completed five Spar Swiss Epics and the Andorra Epic before coming to the Southern tip of Africa to ride the pinnacle of the Epic Series, the Absa Cape Epic.

Copa do Mundo no Brasil: Schurter vence e faz história; Avancini é 13º

Nove vezes campeão mundial, o suíço iguala o recorde de 33 vitórias em etapas da Copa do Mundo de MTB de Absalon, que perseguia desde 2019

Muito emocionado, o suíço Nino Schurter (Scott-Sram) precisou de alguns minutos para se recompor para a entrevista pós-etapa da Copa do Mundo de MTB. O nove vezes campeão mundial e medalha de ouro nos Jogos Rio-2016 finalmente igualou o recorde de 33 vitórias em etapas da Copa do Mundo do francês Julien Absalon neste domingo (10 de abril).

Schurter perseguia o recorde desde 14 de julho de 2019, em Les Gets, na França, quando alcançou 32 vitórias. Desde então, o suíço sempre esteve perto, mas foi somente no Brasil, mais precisamente no São José Bike Club, no Vale do Cuiabá, em Itaipava, distrito de Petrópolis, terra-natal de Henrique Avancini, que a vitória chegou.

Schurter levou a melhor no sprint contra o francês Maxime Marotte (Santa Cruz FSA) e o romeno Vlad Dascalu (Trek Factory Racing), que concluiu em terceiro. O brasileiro Henrique Avancini (Cannondale Factory Racing) terminou em 13º.

“Foi muito legal vencer aqui. Os fãs brasileiros são insanos pelo mountain bike e eu os amo. Só tenho que agradecer pelo apoio que me deram”, agradeceu Nino. “Durante a prova eu pensei se decidiria nas subidas da última volta. Quando passamos na reta oposta a chegada, eu tentei acelerar mas eu percebi que Marotte e Dascalu estavam na minha rota. Então, eu sabia que na última subida seria tudo ou nada. Foi nos últimos metros mesmo. Vencer corridas como essa, em que você tem que batalhar até o metro final, é legal demais. Foi uma das vitórias mais saborosas e vou guardar para sempre”, comemorou Schurter.

“Foram dois anos sem presença maciça de público e eu estava sentido falta disso. Vir para o Brasil, com tantos fãs, foi legal demais de ver. Eu realmente amo os brasileiros. Eles são loucos pelo esporte e vivem por isso. Só posso dizer obrigado aos torcedores. Estou muito agradecido pelas pessoas que fizeram a festa do lado de fora da pista. Agradeço também ao Avancini, por ter feito um trabalho tão bacana pelo esporte, aqui na América do Sul, principalmente no Brasil. É legal ver como o esporte tem sido desenvolvido pelas ações dele em seu país natal”, destacou.

Após a vitória histórica, Schurter assume a liderança da Copa do Mundo, com 288 pontos, seguido por Marotte, com 250, e Hatherly, que soma 180 pontos. Avancini é o 11º, com 120 pontos.

Manager da equipe BMC MTB Racing, o francês Julien Absalon esteve presente na competição acompanhando sua equipe e falou sobre a vitória de Schurter. “Ele já estava há algum tempo próximo de igualar meu recorde e agora conseguiu. Vamos ver se ele chega na 34ª vitória, para bater meu recorde, o que para mim não é um problema, porque ele mereceu chegar até aqui. Nino fez uma linda corrida e é muito legal vê-lo à frente de tantos atletas da nova geração. Novos ciclistas jovens vem vindo e o Nino segue forte o suficiente para vencê-los”, analisou Absalon.

A prova foi disputada com tempo bom, temperatura de 26 graus centígrados e sem chuva. O circuito de 4,5km de extensão e 182 metros de altimetria por volta foi bastante elogiado pela imprensa internacional e agradou bastante aos atletas. Merece destaque também a grande presença de público. Segundo a organização foram vendidos 35 mil ingressos para os três dias do evento.

Apesar da ausência de longas subidas – comuns em outras pistas do Copa do Mundo – o percurso se mostrou desafiador com muitos ciclistas visivelmente sucumbindo fisicamente e perdendo rendimento nas últimas voltas, entre eles o brasileiro Avancini, que na sexta-feira ficou fora do pódio do short track ( relembre aqui ).

A prova reuniu 96 ciclistas de 25 países. Avancini largou bem e esteve entre os cinco primeiros até a penúltima volta. Logo no começo, o tcheco Ondrej Cink (Kross Orlen) assumiu a ponta, com Avancini, Schurter e Thomas Litscher (Kross Orlen) juntos. Cink registrou a volta mais rápida da pista, com o tempo de 11min50s e velocidade média de 22.80km/h.

Schurter abriu a terceira volta em primeiro, seguido por Cink. Avancini, Alan Hatherly (Cannondale Factory Racing) e Christopher Blevins (Specialized Factory Racing) logo atrás. O sul-africano tomou a ponta e foi seguido por Schurter, Dascalu e Marotte (Santa Cruz FSA). Avancini se segurava na quarta colocação.

A quarta volta foi decisiva para a formação do pódio final. Novamente, o suíço Schurter cruzou a meta na frente, com Dascalu, Marrote e Hatherly na sequência. Avancini era o quinto, a 15 segundos, e revelava sinais de sofrimento. Cink caiu para a sexta colocação e foi perdendo colocações.

Lá na frente, o trio vencedor consolidou sua vantagem sobre os adversários, com Schurter, Marotte e Dascalu imprimindo um forte ritmo. Na quinta volta, Schurter, Dascalu e Marotte cruzaram juntos a meta, com Avancini em quarto, a 8 segundos, seguido de perto pelo companheiro de equipe Hatherly. O brasileiro foi perdendo contato com o trio, que aumentava gradativamente o gap para os perseguidores.

Dascalu abriu a penúltima volta na liderança, com Schurter e Marotte em sua roda. O suíço Colombo abriu a 6ª volta em quarto e Avancini em quinto, a 39 segundos do romeno. Mas o dia não era do brasileiro e Avancini que foi perdendo posições.

Um pouco mais atrás a briga se intensificou pelo quarto e quinto lugares no pódio. A briga entre Colombo, Sebastian Fini e Froidmont foi intensa. Fini garantiu a quarta colocação e Colombo foi o quinto, a 55 e 56 segundos respectivamente.

“Foi uma boa corrida. Acredito que nós três, Nino, Vlad e eu, fomos os protagonistas do começo ao fim. Lutamos pela vitória desde o início. Chegamos juntos na subida final, tentei ficar na frente deles, mas perdi no sprint. Honestamente, estou desapontado, porque sigo em busca da minha primeira vitória em etapas da Copa do Mundo. Faz parte do jogo, o Nino foi mais forte do que eu e é assim que é”, lamentou Marotte.

Primeira vez em um pódio em etapas de Copa do Mundo, o dinamarquês Sebastian Fini comemorou muito a quarta colocação. Após fechar a primeira volta em 18º lugar, ultrapassou e foi ganhando posições até alcançar a quarta colocação só na última volta.

“Eu sou apaixonado pelo Brasil. Fiz corridas tão boas aqui no passado. É louco terminar em quarto lugar. Cheguei aqui com a expectativa de fazer um bom trabalho e, quem sabe, conseguir um top 10. Na última semana, na Copa Internacional Michelin de Mountain Bike, me senti tão mal. E, por isso, minhas expectativas diminuíram para hoje (domingo). Algumas vezes, consigo meu melhor quando vou para uma prova com o pensamento de me divertir. Foi isso que aconteceu. Foi inacreditável”, comemorou.

“Esse foi o momento mais especial, intenso e marcante da minha carreira. Gostaria muito de ter entregue um resultado muito melhor do que eu entreguei nas duas provas. Isso mostra muito mais do que foi esse dia, do que foi a competição, mostra o significado de uma vida dedicada ao esporte, e o carinho, apoio e intensidade que recebi das pessoas é algo inexplicável. Para mim é a prova de que valeu muito a pena dedicar a vida a isso, faria tudo de novo, faria as mesmas renúncias, as mesmas escolhas, porque esse final de semana foi muito especial para mim e para o esporte que amo tanto”, comentou Avancini.

Agora, Avancini volta a competir na Copa do Mundo de MTB em maio, nas etapas de Albstadt, na Alemanha, entre os dias 6 e 8, e Nové Mesto, na República Tcheca, de 13 a 15.

Resultados 3ª fecha NTG Sport MTB Tour by Thule #MTBTour #RidechileNews

Este domingo se realizó la tercera fecha del NTG Sport MTB Tour by Thule en el Valle de Casablanca, y contó con circuitos de 20, 40 y 60 kilómetros, un evento auspiciado por Banco Bci.

La categoría experta, que contempló un circuito de 60 kilómetros, fue liderada por Gonzalo Aravena, quien cruzó la meta en 2 horas con 40 minutos y 29 segundos . En el segundo puesto finalizó Patricio Farias en 02:40:30. El tercer lugar fue para Pedro Quiroga, quien terminó el recorrido en 02:42:18.

En mujeres, la más rápida fue Yarela González (ciclista Liv-Cycling ), tras com pletar los 60K en 03:08:07 . El podio lo completó María Trinidad Moreno (03:17:45) y Lea Riccoboni (03:35:54).
