An Insight Into The Percival Property Port Macquarie Junior Tour

Photos: rob lloyd photography.

After the opening two rounds of the Northwave Junior Road Series – NSW/ACT, the halfway point approaches with the Percival Property Port Macquarie Junior Tour.

Male and female riders aged nine to 16 from the ACT, New South Wales and Queensland will race on the Burrawan Forrest State Drive Circuit near Lake Innes in an event sure to attract plenty of supporters from throughout the state.

Scheduled to take place on May 28–29, the two-day tour is another opportunity for young riders to gain experience and knowledge that will assist them with their future cycling aspirations.

The Saturday will see riders tested by individual time trials followed by the criteriums set to run on the purpose-built 900-metre circuit, which features challenging corners and a sharp climb.

The road races will conclude the tour on the Sunday with Sapling Creek and Hastings Dam serving as scenic backdrops.

PMCC JT 2021

In 2022, the Port Macquarie Cycle Club, which was founded by AusCycling’s General Manager of Club Development Graham Seers, will host the event for the 20th time.

“Junior cycling is the breeding ground of future elite racers, so the opportunity to assist the Port Macquarie Cycle Club in hosting the Percival Property Junior Tour for another year was not one to be missed,” said Seers, who will be this year’s Race Director.

Seers founded Port Macquarie CC in 1988. It was originally an association of road cyclists and triathlon enthusiasts in the area and was known as the Port Macquarie Tri/Cycle Club.

Four years later the club split, but Port Macquarie CC went on to excel in its ability to produce state, national and international-level riders. Lauren Kitchen and the Morton brothers, Lachlan and Angus, are just a few who came through the junior ranks of the club and went on to become well-known cycling names.

The Percival Property Port Macquarie Junior Tour, shaped by the club – especially life member Joan Hawes, who has been instrumental in organising the event since its formation – has grown to become an attraction for all young cyclists.

Members of the public are invited to attend to watch potential future champions in action. A club house, canteen and coffee truck will be on site for riders and spectators to enjoy.

Entries for the Percival Property Port Macquarie Junior Tour are open now.

Cycling NSW Junior Tour in Port Macquarie the first step on path to overseas contracts

The tour - a shortened version of the Tour de France - runs around the Burrawan Forest Drive circuit.

In two weeks, the trio will head to the Netherlands as part of an eight-person Cycling NSW under-19 development team that will have the opportunity to race in Europe for a month.

Team manager and Port Macquarie Cycle Club member Melinda Cockshutt said it was exciting for the Hastings region to host an event that has such proud history.

"They started at the Junior Tour and now a lot of them are high school or uni students about to start on a pathway with a team that feeds into intercontinental teams in Europe, so it's pretty exciting," she said.

"The Port Tour has got massive history; everyone loves coming up here and racing because it's got a bit of everything - a few hills, good crit racing and just fun stuff for the kids.

"Hopefully it's a bit of inspiration for the kids that are going to race this weekend that they can see if they want to continue their cycling, the world is their oyster really."

Cycling NSW chief executive Graeme Seers said the opportunity for the development team to head overseas will provide riders with their first taste of high-level racing.

The development team concept has been put on the backburner over the last two years due to the pandemic, but Seers said the time to shine was now with professional contracts on the line.

Alani (left) and James (right) Cockshutt.

"Some of the riders going over there could get a pro contract, they could be riding in the Olympics in the next five years and they could be in Brisbane 2032 in the next ten," he said.

"There's all these things that this could lead to.

"Most Olympians do their first Olympics at 22-24 years old and the second Olympics is where they can be in a position where they're knocking on the door for medals.

"This is all about that pathway and where it could lead to if, as a cyclist, that's where you want to go to."

He said it was a unique opportunity.

"We're sending riders to what we consider to be the hub of the sport, or the centre of the sport," he said.

"The Netherlands have always contributed traditionally and historically to world programs. By sending our juniors over there in their formative years, they're going to get an opportunity to see what the other side of the world does and what it's like."

This weekend's Junior Tour event will provide Port Macquarie Cycle Club with a chance to rebound as community sport begins to emerge from the pandemic.

"This tour is about reigniting the club because the club's been struggling as a result of the pandemic like many clubs throughout Australia in all sports, not just cycling," Seers said.

"This is about offering junior members another opportunity to return to the sport."

The Port Macquarie cycling prodigy will lead the local charge at this weekend's Junior Tour in Port Macquarie.

More than 100 riders from around the state will converge on the region for the two-day event.

The teenager performed strongly at the first tour in Goulburn earlier this month where he registered an impressive second-place finish where he also improved on his time trial.

So an opportunity to compete in his home surrounds should not be underestimated.

"I'm really pumped that we are having a tour on my home course as I feel it gives me an advantage on some of the competition and the opportunity to race at this level before we hold the state titles later in the season," he said.

"A good result this weekend will not only secure more selection points but it will also give me confidence for the state titles as they will be run over the same course."

Jakeman has consistently improved in recent months and is satisfied to see the training start to pay off.

"My results are gradually getting better and I think if you don't win you always come away learning from your performance and that helps with motivation," he said.

The Port Macquarie event will be his second at home following on from the most recent tour which was held in the Hastings two years ago.

He was still learning about racing at the time, but now has more confidence in his ability.

"I still get nervous, but sometimes that energy can help you," he said.

"It's normal to be a bit nervous but this week I think I'm more excited."

Jakeman will compete in the under-17 road race, time trial and team time trial.

Father Stuart, who acts as Port Macquarie Cycle Club president, said the tour is usually part of the selection process for the NSW road team.

"This year we have over 100 riders competing across multiple age groups from under-nine to under-17 and they will travel from all over the state with the addition of some riders making the trip from Queensland," he said.

Port Macquarie clubmate James Cockshutt will compete in his first Junior Tour race in the under-13 division.
