Tours from Edinburgh

Michael was a great tour guide full of facts and made the journey super enjoyable! We all felt safe and comfortable even during this complicated time. Would highly recommend to all! We will definitely be making a return to the Highlands soon 😁

Just finished this 3 day tour and it was amazing. Chris, our tour guide was friendly, an excellent driver with a great sense of humor and a wealth of knowledge about the history of Scotland including Isle of Sky and the highlands. We had lots of photo opportunities and some of the places we stopped at were breathtaking. Accommodation was cozy and easy walk to town for dinner. Perfect amount of time to see some of Scotland’s beauty. Thanks for a lovely experience.

Eddy our driver was great! He had lots of stories and jokes along the way! We had a small group as it’s the off season but this gave us so much time to explore each stop. We really enjoyed this tour! The chapel was amazing and the staff there were so kind answering all our questions and showing the hidden gems the chapel had.

We had a great experience on our tour. Our tour guide Iain was thorough, well informed and funny. He made sure that our group found all of the best photo opportunities and even took us on some side adventures. He went out of his way to make sure we were safe, happy and got to feed the hairy coos!

I've been on 3 different tours with this company and would highly recommend traveling with them if you want to see the highlands! I had different drivers every time, taking me to places in the highlands I've never been before! Great company with great guides! Thanks!

This was my second G Adventures tour and it proved to be as enjoyable as the first one, which was the main reason my wife and I booked it. The small size of the tour group and the variety of people made it all the better. The tour offered a good balance between structured visits of major attractions and free time to explore on our own. I would not hesitate to recommend a G Adventures tour to anyone seeking a guided travel experience in the company of other like-minded travelers.

5-Day Highland Explorer: Skye & Far North Small-Group Tour from Edinburgh

This tour exceeded my expectations, by far! Our driver/guide, Gav, did everything in his power to make the most of our stops and cater to each of our interests. His excellent driving (even in some harsh conditions), stories and overall consideration was exemplary. Based on this experience, I will definitely look into future tour opportunities with Rabbie’s.

Isle of Skye, Loch Ness & Inverness

I really wish I could give this 5 stars, but a failure by the company to ensure the bus had operational tires and a proper spare tire caused us a 6 hour delay in the tour when the driver had to call for help in Oban and the tires came from Edinburgh! The tires should have been taken care of before we ever got on the bus. The spare should have been a quality tire and not some rusted no good tire. The driver knew he needed new tires before we left but did not attempt to take care of it until the next day. This caused us to miss 6 hours of touring as we were stuck. All of us on the tour should be compensated for this failure. Aside from that catastrophe, our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable giving us lots of history and facts about the towns and area. The places we saw were wonderful and unforgettable! The hotels for the most part were lovely (one did not have air conditioning which would be horrible had it been a hotter night). We were unable to do the steam train as it had unexpected maintenance but they did refund us for that. I cannot say for certain I would use this company again as I am very upset about the tire situation for both safety and the missed sites as a result. If the company reaches out for compensation I will update my review.

Wonderful tour!! Due mostly to Donald, our driver. He was so very informative and entertaining along the way! His knowledge of the country and the folklore is amazing. What a pleasure. Please pass the compliments along to him. You're lucky to have him in your employment. I would not hesitate to take a Rabbie tour again. Thank you.

Rich, our guide was amazing! There were some great people on the bus which made every stop really enjoyable! We really loved the islands and the highlands and were sad to leave it behind, BUT we have made some cool friends. It was totally worth it. Rich has awesome pub and restaurant recommendations and his knowledge about Scotland and its history are out of this world! So ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 stars from Suus and Dieuwke

I was sold the moment James greeted us and started his tour with us. He has such a lovely personality and sold me on Scotland as the best place to visit in the world. It was the most wonderful tour ever. He was exceptional and even when I return to Scotland, i fear no one will never match up to his standards. I think his tour was unsurpassed. My grandson was even captivated by James stories and tourr stops which says a tremendous amount in James favor considering how difficult it is to keep a 16 year old captivated!

Curious Castles

Mysteries lie within. Like a hidden passageway. A strange portrait looming above you in a dark hallway. A wall torn to shreds by violence and time. The castles of Scotland display their history proudly. They sigh over their own ruinous state, welcoming your admiration over all they’ve endured.

Where are the Scottish Highlands?

The Scottish Highlands refers to the north-western part of Scotland. The region stretches from Fort William up to the Isle of Skye on the coast, and Durness in the far north-west to Inverness in the east.

How do I get to the Highlands?

If you’re traveling from overseas, the closest airports to fly to are Glasgow International Airport (GLA) or Edinburgh International Airport (EDI). From here, you can hire a car, catch a bus or take a train to one of the cities or towns in the Highlands.

If you're traveling from the  UK , you can take a train or coach to Fort William or Inverness and transfer to a local train or bus to get around the Highlands.

How do I get around the Highlands?

If you have a car, driving is the easiest way to get around the Highlands and explore at your own pace.

Don’t worry if you don't have a car, as the main places and sights in the Highlands are pretty well connected with public transport.

Trains operate between all of the main cities including Inverness, Aviemore and Fort William (and all of the towns in between).

If trains aren’t available for where you want to go, chances are you can take a local bus or coach with Stagecoach, Scottish Citylink or the National Express.

You can also take a ferry as a foot passenger or with your car to get to the Highlands’ many islands.

When is the best time to visit the Scottish Highlands?

Billy Connolly once said, “There are two seasons in Scotland: June and Winter”. And he’s not entirely wrong. The weather can be very hit and miss even during the summer.

The best time to visit if you want a chance of good weather is during the summer between June and August when the days are long and the weather is at its mildest.

Visiting in the colder months can also be a great time to see snow-capped mountains and get cozy in the pub around a log fire.

No matter what time of year you visit, it’s best to be prepared for rain and chilly weather.

What should I pack for the Highlands?

For a trip to the Highlands, or anywhere else in Scotland, bring plenty of comfortable clothing that will see you through long days of walking, exploring and visiting attractions.

The weather is pretty unpredictable, and even if the forecast says it will be warm or dry, it could (and probably will) change.

Bring a waterproof jacket, a warm coat, gloves, a hat and a scarf. A waterproof day sack can also come in quite handy to protect your phone and personal items if the heavens open while you're out walking.

What is internet access like in the Highlands?

The Scottish Highlands covers a pretty big area, including mountain ranges.

Internet access and mobile phone coverage is fine in villages, towns and main tourist hubs, but it might be a little patchy in more remote areas or at higher elevations.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Frequently Asked Questions About Highland Tours

You might want to know more about the Scottish Highlands before you book your tour. Below you can find answers to commonly asked questions to help you plan your trip. Read on to learn all about visiting the Highlands or get in touch with our Scotland team .

Alternatively, find out how to make a booking , have a look at our FAQs , or learn about our Book With Confidence travel plan.

1. WHERE ARE THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS?

You’ll find the Highlands in northern Scotland, covering the top part of the country. The southern Highland boundary covers the Fort William area in the west, taking in Aviemore and Inverness in the east. Spanning almost 10,000 square miles (25,900 square kilometres), the Highlands make up a third of Scotland.

2. WHAT ARE THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS FAMOUS FOR?

Visit Scotland’s Highlands and you’ll get to experience iconic elements of Scottish culture and nature. The region is known for unspoiled mountains, glens, lochs , forests and rivers, as well as rugged islands and coastline.

Plus, you could tour whisky distilleries, and go to a traditional Highland games. The region is also known for its  famous castles , some of which were used as filming locations for the hit TV series The Crown .

Read more cool facts about scotland on our experts' blog.

3. ARE THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS WORTH VISITING?

Yes, we highly recommend you explore the Scottish Highlands! Visiting this region allows you to delve into some of Scotland’s most breathtaking landscapes. You’d get to enjoy outdoor activities in beautiful settings, look for native wildlife, and discover charming rural villages.

A trip to the Highlands also brings fascinating Scottish history to life. You’ll have the chance to discover centuries-old castles, famous battlefields and insightful museums.

What’s more, as Scotland is a relatively small country, the Highlands are easy to reach. It doesn’t take long to drive here from major cities like Edinburgh or Glasgow. All the more reason to come and explore this mystical corner of Scotland for yourself!

4. WHERE SHOULD I GO IN THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS?

There are so many stunning places awaiting you in the Scottish Highlands. You could explore a mix of hidden gems and famous sites on your trip. Like so many visitors, you’ll probably want to come back to see even more of the region!

These are the top-recommended destinations to visit on your Scottish Highlands vacation:

  • Cairngorms National Park
  • Fort William
  • Isle of Skye

For more inspiration, discover the best Scottish castles and the most beautiful places to visit in Scotland on our experts’ blog.

5. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS?

The best time to visit Scotland depends on what you’d like to see and do during your time here. If enjoying outdoor activities and reaching remote areas are your thing, we’d recommend visiting Scotland in summer (June to August). You’d get long daylight hours and mild weather at this time of year.

Summer is the most popular season for visitors to the Highlands. The spring and autumn are both great alternatives if you want to travel during a quieter period. You’d also have a better chance of avoiding midges, which are most active in the summer months.

You could consider a winter trip to the Highlands if you love the idea of escaping to a cosy guesthouse amid the frosty landscapes. Compared to the summer, you’d have fewer hours of daylight for exploring and colder weather. But for peace and quiet, winter is your best bet.

6. HOW DO YOU GET AROUND THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS?

The best way to get around the Scottish Highlands is by driving. You could take the train or bus, but with a car you’d be able to reach more sights and see all that Scotland has to offer.

With Nordic Visitor you can choose from self-drive , privately guided and small group tours of Scotland , depending on how you want to see the country. You might like to take a self-guided trip, or perhaps you’d prefer to explore with a local guide.

To leave the driving to someone else and have a local guide show you around, opt for a privately guided or small group tour. You’d benefit from the insight of a Scotland expert who would share their insider knowledge with you.

Alternatively, a self-drive tour is ideal if you’d prefer the independence of a Scottish road trip. You can travel at your own pace and stop whenever you feel like it. If you are visiting from the UK, you could still enjoy a Nordic Visitor self-drive tour but with your own car. Contact us to find out more .

For inspiration on driving in Scotland, discover the best road trips in Scotland and this complete guide to driving the North Coast 500 .

7. HOW MANY DAYS DO YOU NEED TO SEE SCOTLAND?

Deciding how long to spend in Scotland all depends on the type of experience you are looking for. The longer you stay here, the more you’ll get to see!

For an in-depth tour, we recommend you stay for two to three weeks . This would give you enough time to explore all corners of the country and travel to some of the beautiful islands. For example, you could visit Shetland, the Hebrides, or the Isles of Mull, Iona and Islay.

Or come for around 10 days to experience the highlights of Scotland. You’d be able to reach the Highlands, Isle of Skye and eastern Scotland in this time.

If you’ve only got one week or less, you can enjoy an express Scotland trip. Take a tour from Edinburgh or Glasgow and see the essential sights like Loch Lomond and the Trossachs, one of the national parks in Scotland. You could also venture further north to visit the Highlands.

8. Is car rental included in your self-drive tours of Scotland?

Yes, your self-drive tour with Nordic Visitor includes car rental with our tried-and-tested hire car suppliers in Scotland.

You receive a collision damage waiver (CDW) and an excess waiver to reduce liability to zero. On top of that, you enjoy unlimited mileage and the authorisation for two drivers. We don’t cover your road trip music: that is all up to you!

When you rent a car for your self-drive tour of Scotland with Nordic Visitor, there are some requirements that you should be aware of.

11. WHEN SHOULD I ORGANISE MY FLIGHTS?

We recommend that you book your Nordic Visitor tour first to secure your preferred dates before buying your flights. Do search for flights in the meantime so you know what’s available, but wait to purchase them until after your travel consultant has confirmed your tour booking.

By securing your Scotland tour first, you get introduced to your dedicated travel consultant and you will receive all of your package details. This means you can make a more informed choice when reserving flights in and out of Scotland. If you have any questions you can always contact us for advice .

12. WHAT TO PACK FOR THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS?

Scotland’s climate can be a little unpredictable, even in summer. You might get lovely sunny days, rain, wind, or snow (in winter). That’s why we suggest you pack clothing and gear for all eventualities.

Take a big step back in time and stroll through Dunadd Hill Fort and the Temple Wood Stone Circle or uncover some extraordinary Neolithic rock art at Achnabreck.

Then, we will have a scenic journey to the picturesque seaside town of Oban, home to Scotland’s best seafood! As we drive through it, your guide will provide you with an overview of the history of the town and its most famous sights. On our first evening, you have the opportunity to take part in a traditional Scottish Ceilidh!

We will drive part of the route of one of the most fantastic train journeys in the entire world. We will stop to view the Glenfinnan Viaduct, made famous by the Harry Potter films, and hopefully, get a chance to see the steam train cross it. We will also be able to see Glenfinnan Monument – and the gorgeous scenery that surrounds it!

Day 3 A whole day to explore Skye…

You’ll have the whole of the third day to explore Skye’s mysteries and landscape with your knowledgeable driver-guide, who will ensure you get the most out of your time on the island based on the weather and group. Stops often include the likes of Cuillin Mountains, Dun Beag Broch, the Black Houses, the Kilt Rock Waterfall, The Old Man of Storr and the Trotternish Peninsula, and of course the capital of the island, Portree. It’s the perfect Scottish experience giving you a chance to visit waterfalls, springs, historic sights and walk through some of the most beautiful landscapes.

How to Take a Castle and Whisky Tasting Train Through the Scottish Highlands

E xperienced travelers are supposed to be pros at three things: planes, trains , and automobiles. I’ve mastered the art of finagling extra dinners on airplanes and successfully doctored a bent license plate on a rental car to avoid the damage fees I clearly deserved. The sight of train timetables, however, made my palms sweat. Crowded train cars with the inevitable soundtrack of crying babies evoked fantasies of Murder on the Orient Express , but with me as the murderer. Trains, to me, were a novelty to be watched in Harry Potter or taken to work if you didn’t have a car — not a viable way of exploring a country.

Sometimes, we hate something simply because we don’t understand it. Trains intimidated me. That’s why, when I got the opportunity to travel the Scottish Highlands by train, I said to a coworker, “It sounds like an incredible trip. You know, except for the trains.”

In 2015 I went to grad school in Scotland and did a Scottish Highlands tour three times — all via rental car driven by a qualified left-side-of-the-road driver. I thought cars represented ultimate freedom. Trains were for an older generation, the stubborn travelers of yesterday. Trains were Charles Dickens. Cars were Jack Kerouac.

Seven years later I skeptically stepped on a train in Scotland for the first time, and spent the next week crisscrossing on a Scottish Highlands tour through landscapes hidden from the highways. Two castles, countless whisky tastings, and 20,000 Highland cows later, I conceded: maybe Dickens isn’t so bad.

Start your Scottish Highlands tour in Edinburgh

Anyone thinking about exploring Scotland — by train or otherwise — should start in Edinburgh. Defined by its cobbled, hilly streets that could easily replace your StairMaster, a 12th-century castle, and labyrinthine alleyways (or “closes”), Edinburgh feels like a mix of London and a small Scottish village. Though I had lived in Edinburgh for a year, I got lost multiple times wandering closes I never knew existed before, and which seemed to open up around the city like portals to miniature Diagon Alleys.

Carlton Hill in Edinburgh a great place to start on a Scottish Highlands tour

The city is also the best place to experience all the Scottish cliches you dreamed about on your flight over. You can take a photo with a bagpiper, try haggis and blood pudding at a hole-in-the-wall pub, shop at a kilt store, visit the Writer’s Museum dedicated to Sir Walter Scott and Robert Burns, and end the night with a deep-fried Mars Bar (arguably the most Scottish thing on this list). And of course, what visit to Scotland’s capital would be complete without hitting a whisky distillery?

The Johnnie Walker Distillery on Princes Street was a refreshing new sight for me. Opened in 2021, the distillery has several tasting rooms, a gift shop where you can craft your own whisky, a rooftop bar, and one of the most immersive tours I’ve ever taken. I’m a big whisky fan, but distillery tours almost never interest me. Not because I’m a snob. Quite the opposite. Because I don’t want to sniff or swish my drinks, learn about the density of wood in the casks, or pretend to taste complex notes when I don’t. My palate isn’t refined enough for all that. But the Johnnie Walker tour is different.

It didn’t feel like a middle school field trip to a science museum, but a combination of Disneyland and Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. There was a live-action theatrical performance of Johnnie Walker’s history, a “scent room” where the guide shot bubbles from a gun, which burst into an aromatic mist, and a tasting room that looked like a private nightclub, with a buffet of ingredients for guests to experiment with. It sets the bar pretty high, but it’s the perfect way to kick off your Scotland whisky experience.

The Johnnie Walker distillery isn’t the only welcome new addition to the city. Virgin Hotels on Victoria Street opened this past summer, bringing unconventional luxury to Edinburgh’s Old Town. With Virgin’s patented blend of edgy, adult-oriented decor and quirky opulence, the hotel at first feels more like a museum. A glittering, nightclub-esque entryway leads to a lobby filled with bookshelves, artwork, a fireplace, plush couches, and an old record player. In the spacious guest rooms, you’ll find a welcome note scrawled on your mirror in red lipstick, and the best-stocked minibar I’ve ever seen. One of my colleagues was lucky enough to have an attic-like bonus room, equipped with a massive divan that looked like something from Eyes Wide Shut .

Virgin Hotels are designed to make you never want to leave the hotel. That’d be fine if this were a remote wellness resort in the mountains. But this is Scotland, and you’ve got places to be.

To Fort William on the West Highland Line

I understand highways. I can look at a GPS and figure out where I’m supposed to go. Train routes, however, are like long division. It’s supposed to be easy, but carry the six when you’re supposed to carry the four, and you wind up in no-man’s-land. Turns out, there’s a reason they teach long division in elementary school: It’s really not that hard.

Train in Edinburgh leaving for a Scottish Highlands tour

We took a quick train from Edinburgh to Glasgow, then the famously scenic West Highland Line from Glasgow up to Fort William. It didn’t take long before we had cleared the city limits, and the Outlander -esque landscapes started scrolling past the window. Spanning the wild west coast of Scotland, the West Highland Line brings you through the glens and lakes of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, the boggy Rannoch Moor, and the mountains of Glencoe, on your way to Fort William. We passed some of the tiniest rail stations I’ve ever seen, many of which looked more like tollbooths, seemingly miles from the nearest paved road.

At one such station, two men in their mid-20s boarded and sat across from me. They looked like classic backpackers, with dusty oversized backpacks and beards that clearly hadn’t been trimmed in weeks.

“Going to Fort William?” I asked. Fort William was the only town on the line with over 1,000 people. Pretty much every passenger was going there.

“Eventually, maybe,” said one, shrugging at the other. “Not for a couple days though.”

“So you’re just winging it?”

“Basically. Been here about two weeks now, just going around on the train. These little villages are pretty cool.”

“The one you just came from — what’d you do there?”

“Hiked a bit,” the other backpacker said. “Drank a bit. Just bummed around. There’s not much to do, I guess.”

“…but the not-doing is more fun than the doing, sometimes,” his friend chimed in. “Especially in a place like this.”

“And getting around on the train’s been easy? Why not just drive?”

The guy laughed and nudged his friend. “I don’t trust him to drive on the left side. Or myself, either. Besides, now we don’t have to worry about gas, or getting lost, or staying awake. We just get on and off wherever looks good.”

It made perfect sense, I just didn’t expect to meet two Kerouacs on a train.

They got off a few stops later, at another station that looked like a tollbooth, while we continued to Fort William. The home base for a Scottish Highlands tour, Fort William is close to the geographically dramatic Glencoe, hill walking and bike paths, and Ben Nevis — the tallest mountain in the UK. It’s also home to the Crannog Seafood Restaurant , where I had the best oysters I’ve ever eaten in my life (coming from a New England guy, that’s saying something). From our hotel, the stately Ballachulish just outside town, it was just a few minutes’ cab to the Ben Nevis Distillery , our first whisky-tasting experience in the Highlands.

Ben Nevis Distillery on Scottish Highlands tour

Unlike Johnnie Walker, Ben Nevis wows not with technological flair, but by sheer natural beauty. In the shadow of Ben Nevis mountain, and surrounded by towering peaks and rolling hills, the distillery feels like it grew out of the land itself. Indeed, the tree bark in the surrounding forest has been imbued with whisky due to the evaporation process in the nearby casks.

Still buzzing from the distillery, we boarded the West Highland Line yet again to Mallaig, the line’s terminus. While the fishing village itself is picturesque, sitting on the edge of the sea, and there was a sense of achievement in reaching the remote end of the line, this leg of the trip had one real purpose: seeing the “ Harry Potter bridge.”

An hour from Fort William, the conductor’s voice came on the speaker system for a special announcement: “We’ll be over the Glenfinnan Viaduct in just a minute now. You might recognize it as the stone bridge from Harry Potter . Best view’ll be on your right.”

Like the seatbelt sign on a plane being switched off upon landing, everyone immediately shot up from their seats. Toddlers, octogenarians, and everyone in between glued their faces to the window for a look at the famous bridge, where the Hogwarts Express scenes of the movies had been filmed. I’d always wondered why a bunch of wizards took a train to school instead of, you know, using magic to conjure a faster mode of transportation. Now I know: the views.

Take the Kyle Line from Inverness

To see another side of the Highlands, take the Kyle Line from Inverness, the capital and largest city of the Highlands. Like Fort William on the western side of the Highlands, Inverness is the perfect east coast base, with proximity to Culloden battlefield ( Outlander , anyone?) and the storied Loch Ness, where you can cruise across the lake while learning about the monster that may or may not dwell there. The cruise also brings you right alongside Urquhart Castle, a fortress dating back to the 13th century that overlooks the loch.

The Kyle Line runs across the Highlands from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh, a village on the northwest coast known as the home of Eilean Donan Castle — one of Scotland’s most dramatic medieval landmarks.

“Is this the train to the castle?” asked a woman who had just boarded in Inverness. She was American and dressed stylishly as if she had just come from a shopping spree on Fifth Avenue.

“Yeah,” I answered. She sat in front of me.

“Sorry, I should not have asked. I told myself I’d be more independent since the divorce. That I didn’t need a man’s help for anything. No offense.”

“Uhh, no problem.”

“That’s why I’m on this trip, I guess. To prove I can do it. Not to him…to myself.”

I could tell I was officially in the conversation, whether or not I wanted to be.

“So you’re going around Scotland by train?”

“A little bit of everything. He refused to travel with me, you know. He thought I was high maintenance or something. Well, look at me now, on a train to God-knows-where with hardly any luggage.”

She had two massive suitcases — each two-thirds her size — stowed in the luggage car. I wondered how she carried it all.

“Where are you going after the castle?” I asked, now interested in the woman as a character study.

“I think I’ll spend a few days on the Isle of Skye. It’s not far from the castle.”

“The train doesn’t go to Skye. How’re you getting there?”

“I’ll figure it out,” she shrugged. “I always figure it out. I don’t need anyone’s help.”

She faced forward in her seat, signaling that the conversation was over. When we disembarked, I imagined her in a little rowboat with those two giant suitcases, determinedly paddling her way to the Isle of Skye.

I completely forgot about the woman during our tour of Eilean Donan Castle , the conversation being quickly overshadowed by the location’s otherworldly beauty. On a little island in Loch Duich, Loch Long, and Loch Alsh, and connected to the mainland only by footbridge, the 13th-century castle is one of the most striking landmarks in the Highlands. The former stronghold of Clan Mackenzie, the castle was destroyed during the Jacobite rebellions of the 1700s before being reconstructed and turned into a museum.

Back in Inverness, I quickly learned that this “Capital of the Highlands” wasn’t merely a city to rest up during your Scottish Highlands tour. We settled in for dinner at The Mustard Seed , a local favorite right on the banks of the River Ness. While Scotland is undeniably known for its seafood, I had a delicious braised duck, and one of my colleagues called the seared ribeye the “best steak they ever had.”

The evening ended with a nightcap at The Malt Room , a small, stylish whisky bar tucked away in an alley. Serendipitously, we ran into one of the bar’s owners while ordering our drinks — a friendly guy in his early-30s, whose passion for Highlands whisky was immediately obvious. I had been longing for Jameson, my drink of choice back home, but realized drinking an Irish whiskey in a Highlands whisky bar would be like wearing a Red Sox hat in Yankee Stadium, and went with a Craigellachie 12 instead.

“Have you been in Inverness long?” he asked, once we all had our drinks.

“A few days,” another journalist answered. “We’ve been going all around the Highlands, seeing distilleries, castles, little towns.”

“Oh, wonderful. And how’re you getting around? Car?”

“Train,” I said, with more pride than I would have thought possible five days ago.

“Well that’s a special trip, isn’t it? You see all kinds of things, meet all kinds of people — you know, colorful people — on a train that you never would otherwise.”

Only then did I remember the American woman. Even if she was a little unhinged, I admired her sense of independence, and her ability to just go and figure out the details later. To her, to those two backpackers, and now to me, the train meant freedom.

In defense of trains

Cars are like novels. Trains are poems. They’re tough to appreciate at first, but once you understand the weight of the words, once you get it, the beauty is obvious.

Before Scotland, you could look up “rental cars” in an encyclopedia and see my smiling face leaning against one. Didn’t matter where I was going, or for how long — I’d always drive myself. Unbridled freedom, however, means reading road signs in other languages, hoping your GPS has a signal, worrying about parking on narrow European streets, and (in Scotland) driving on the opposite side of the road. On the train, I found myself actually able to switch off my brain. Relieved of the pressure of “figuring it out” every step of the way, I could actually relax and recharge.

It’s embarrassing to admit, but it never occurred to me that train views would be any different from car views. Scotland’s railroads cut through parts of the country untouched by paved roads. We’d go hours with no glimpse of a car or highway. Indeed, as we plunged deeper into the green wilds of the countryside, it felt more like plunging into the past, into a time when castles were actually inhabited by clan leaders, and whispers of a Loch Ness Monster were just circulating. Whatever the view might be, on a train, you’re actually free to enjoy it; to press your face against the window and look at a stone bridge without crashing the car; to watch the green hills, scroll by and imagine you’re on the Hogwarts Express; or, if you so wish, to sleep.

And perhaps the biggest benefit? The ability to get away from your friends. When you spend days traveling with people in close quarters — no matter how much you like them — you get sick of them. I genuinely enjoyed the company of the other journalists on my trip, but by day three, I couldn’t wait to put a few rows between us on the train (and I’m sure they felt the same about me). Many of us still keep in touch. Had we all been crammed into a rental car, that might not be the case.

We’ll share yesterday’s stories today, to make memories for your tomorrows!

Yesterday’s stories today.

Experience tours seeing Scottish mountain peaks against the sky and waterfalls plunging into spray-filled depths; hearing of myths and legends, heroes and villains, ghosts and ghouls; visiting Harry Potter and Outlander sites, Inverness whisky bars and the Edinburgh Tattoo! All of these have the same thing in common – they are part of yesterday’s many stories, which can be retold by us for you, today.

We are above Gairloch Beach on the NC500 - Magical Wester Ross Tour. The sun has just set, behind the low dark-silhouetted hills on the far side of the bay. The overwhelming shades of sky, sea and sand are purple and indigo through to blue. The land is to the left, and along the distant horizon, and the ocean is to the right. At the far end of the crescent of sand there are the distant figures of half a dozen people walking. Closer to us, and immediately below, is a single figure with a collie dog.

UK Travel Planning Guide: the FAQs

🏥 Should I buy UK travel insurance?

Absolutely yes. Basic coverage is not expensive, and as a visitor you are NOT covered under the NHS. Compare policies and prices with Travel Insurance Master here , a big name in the travel insurance business, and cross that off your list.

🔌 Do I need travel adapters for the UK?

Yes, you do, otherwise you won’t be able to plug in your electronics/phone/lifelines. I recommend this one , which is all-in-one so you can use it in other countries.

🚗 What do I need to drive in the UK?

The first thing you need to check out if you’re planning on renting a car in the UK is this guide to driving in the UK for visitors – the roads, signs, and driving experience will likely not be what you’re used to and it’s essential to prepare yourself to stay safe and aware.

🛌 What’s the best way to book hotels in the UK?

For UK hotels, Booking is the best site as it offers free cancellation on many properties. If you want an apartment, I always recommend VRBO over AirBnb.

📳 Will my phone work in the UK?

Yes – if you set it up right. Check out my guide on making your foreign phone work in the UK to ensure that you get the type of service you need.

🚿 Can I drink the water in the UK?

Yes, UK water is great and perfectly safe. But drink out of taps in any kitchen or use water fountains. Double check before drinking out of the taps in hotel bathrooms, though, as they may be on a different system.

We don't know which trip you mean as there are lots of treks in the Scottish Highlands.

It would seem best to ask the organisers though.

King Charles to Open Parts of Queen Elizabeth’s Beloved Balmoral Castle, Buckingham Palace to the Public

This summer, royal enthusiasts will be able to set foot inside rooms of two iconic royal residences for the first time ever. The royal family will make internal tours of Scotland's Balmoral Castle, as well as the East Wing of Buckingham Palace, available to the public in July and August.

Balmoral Castle , in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, was known to be the late Queen Elizabeth II’s favorite place to spend time. It’s also where she spent her final days and died in 2022 . Beginning this summer, the public will be allowed to explore parts of the royal residence for the first time ever since its completion in 1855.

The royal family usually spends large parts of their summers at Balmoral, a tradition that has continued into the reign of King Charles III . Last summer, the bulk of the royal family, with the exception of the estranged Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle , gathered at the castle .

This week, royal websites were updated with tickets for guided tours of the castle, which had previously only been offered on select dates for the grounds and the ballroom. The intimate tours, which were limited to 10 attendees per group and were only available on dates in July and early August, quickly sold out.

The royal estate in the Scottish Highlands is a touchstone for the family, and the site not only of family gatherings and the longest-sitting monarch’s death, but other milestone memories as well. In a recently resurfaced clip of Prince William giving a speech in Scotland in 2021 , he recalled being at Balmoral when he found out that his mother, Princess Diana, had died.

“Still in shock, I found sanctuary in the service at Crathie Kirk that very morning,” he said. “And in the dark days of grief that followed, I found comfort and solace in the Scottish outdoors. As a result, the connection I feel to Scotland will forever run deep.”

The castle and its land were first purchased by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1852 when they promptly began construction to expand and modernize the previously too-small estate they had fallen in love with. Notably, Queen Elizabeth herself was proposed to by Prince Philip on the 50,000 acres of what Victoria once called “my dear paradise in the Highlands.”

The rooms of Balmoral aren’t the only royal spaces to be made newly available to guests. On Wednesday, the Royal Trust announced that Buckingham Palace’s East Wing would also be opened for the first time this summer, following its five-year renovation. This will be the first time that the public will be able to visit the room leading out to the central balcony that has been the setting for so many milestones for the royal family, including the traditional appearance greeting the public at the summer Trooping the Colour festivities.

Certain rooms of Buckingham Palace have been opened in the summer for guided tours since 1992 when Queen Elizabeth began the offering as a fundraiser following a fire in the royal residence, but this is the first time in the castle’s history that these rooms will be available for public viewing.

What will Scottish Golf Tourism Week ever do for us? Businesses and hospitality groups share their thoughts

More hotel rooms, tee times and international flights are needed to capitalise on overseas demand.

A visitor boom is predicted following Scottish Golf Tourism Week being held in Inverness. Image Sandy McCook/DC Thomson

The Highlands is still basking in the success of Scottish Golf Tourism Week and preparing to reap benefits for “generations to come”.

Inverness hosted the prestigious event for the first time last month.

It has been predicted the event, created with VisitScotland in partnership with the Press and Journal, will lead to a golfing boom for the area.

Overseas tour operators were full of praise for the Highlands as a golf destination.

So what now? Is the positive feedback turning into inquiries and bookings?

And what needs to happen before the area can capitalise more on the highly lucrative golf market?

Significant rewards from golf tourisms

According to VisitScotland , the North American market is particularly interested, with tour operators seeking ‘immersive experiences’.

This is due to an increase in groups who are travelling with non-players.

The rewards can be significant. Golf tour groups usually stay from five to 10 nights and take in two locations across the country.

Figures from 2017, show overseas golfing visitors spend on average £338 per night, more than four times the daily spend of an average Scottish visitor (£78.90).

Rona Wallace, senior manager for business growth and development at VisitScotland, said: “Scotland is a massive draw for international golfers.

“And events such as Scottish Golf Tourism Week are an opportunity to spread the benefits across the regions.”

She said links courses are a particular draw for golfers from key international markets.

“Combine that with the region’s whisky heritage, which is hugely popular with the market, and you have a package that engages with golf tour operators and can help drive international visitors to the region.”

A proud moment for the Highlands

Hosting Scottish Golf Tourism Week was a proud moment for the Highlands says Yvonne Crook, chair of Highland Tourism CIC co-owner of the week’s main sponsor Good Highland Food .

“We look forward to reaping the rewards from the success of this event and to many more opportunities in the future to stage similar events in the Highlands.”

Don Johnstone, CEO of Visit Inverness Loch Ness, says there will be “undoubtable” long-term benefit for the region from Scottish Golf Tourism Week.

scottish highlands tour

“Aside from the £3 million of economic benefit estimated over the next three years, the exposure garnered during the event will help cement the region as a premier golfing destination on the worldwide stage for generations to come.

“Having had the opportunity to showcase what is on offer, the stage is now set for sustained growth in golf tourism, bolstering the local economy and further cementing Inverness and the Highlands status as a must-visit destination for golf enthusiasts worldwide.”

Impact will be seen from next summer

Ann Liddle, event sales manager for DC Thomson, said feedback from Scottish Golf Tourism Week has been “incredible”.

She added: “The average time between booking a golf trip and travel is between 13-18 months.

“So the biggest impact will be seen next summer and the years following that.”

To grasp the opportunity, many believe more hotel rooms and tee times are needed for visiting golfers in peak times.

Ensuring international flights are maintained or increased is also a priority.

scottish highlands tour

Craig Ewan, vice chairman of the Highland Hotels Association , said: “Golf is already a really important segment to the Highland Hotel Associations business segmentation.

“From speaking to the tour operators there is clearly more demand for the Highlands.

“One of the challenges is availability in our peak season.

“However, maybe we should be looking at making more availability for this sector as these golfers are very discerning travellers who clearly do not come to the Highlands to window shop.”

Can the season be extended?

Mr Ewan, operations director at the Kingsmills Hotel Group , said there is an opportunity to extend the tourist season from March to the end of October.

“Ensuring we have the double daily flights from Heathrow would help this.

“At present this happens in the summer schedule, but usually flips to just one connection a day in the winter schedule.

“The link to Schiphol is another great link which I believe is still under-utilised in terms of connections to the US.”

scottish highlands tour

Increasing playing capacity on high-profile courses like Royal Dornoch, Nairn and Cabot Highlands , will be difficult.

But new attractions, including the Old Petty course being built at Cabot Highlands, and the planned but controversial Coul Links , could help.

Tony Story, CEO at the Kingsmills Hotel Group, said: “The golf tourist is one the highest, if not, the highest economically beneficial by sector to the Highlands.

“Tee times are in very high demand and will be significantly enhanced with the new Old Petty course.

“Given consent, the proposed new Coul Links would also be a significant contributor to maximising the economic benefits of Highland golf.”

More international flights ‘a priority’

Stuart McColm, general manager at Cabot Highlands, said hosting Scottish Golf Tourism Week in the Highlands will bring economic benefits to the region “for years to come”.

“Maximising the true economic opportunity for the region will come through continuing to enhance the golfer’s visitor experience, while the development of international flights which must be a priority.”

scottish highlands tour

Colin Marr, chief executive of Inverness Chamber of Commerce , said a golfing boom would not add pressure on other tourism attractions.

“The long-term benefit of more golf tourism is enormous as a lot of golf tourists are high spenders.

“But they are attending different venues form the normal tourist.

“So we can see a good increase in economic impact without necessarily putting pressure on other attractions that are already busy.”

Working to improve transport links

Mr Marr said transport was an issue raised by tour operators during Scottish Golf Tourism Week.

“As with so many aspects of doing business in the Highlands, there were some questions around our transport links, which we are all working to improve.

“But this was balanced out to some extent by how many of or top golf courses are within a short drive of the airport.”

Cabot highlands offers nod to historic church and local cow with name and logo of new tom doak layout in scotland, share this article.

scottish highlands tour

Cabot Highlands in Inverness, Scotland, has chosen a name for its new Tom Doak-designed course that is now scheduled to open for preview play in 2025: Old Petty.

The name is a nod to the Old Petty Church, which was built in 1839 and sits off what will become the 16 th green. The now-unused church is believed to sit at the site of an even older church, and the Old Petty Church is reported to have hosted an unusual custom: Mourners in the early 1800s would run to the church’s graveyard during funerals while carrying the coffin.

The logo for the new Old Petty course will be the highland cow, or “Hairy Coo” as the locals call them.

Cabot revealed Doak’s planned routing for Old Petty last summer, with holes passing a 400-year-old castle that provided the previous name for the property, Castle Stuart, before the Canadian-based Cabot bought it and rebranded the northern Scottish resort in 2022.

  • Travel: Bounding across Scotland, from Royal Dornoch around to St. Andrews with stops all along the way
  • Cabot steps up as world player with opening of new courses at Citrus Farms, Saint Lucia

Old Petty will be on the southwest side of the property’s original Castle Stuart Golf Links built by Mark Parsinen and Gil Hanse, which ranks as the No. 4 modern course in Great Britain and Ireland. Built on land that was previously farmed, Old Petty will wrap down and around an estuary, offering stunning views and a layout that crisscrosses in a huge shared fairway for Nos. 1 and 18.

Cabot also plans to extend the unique white clubhouse to include a new whiskey and cigar bar, a clubhouse grill bar and a chophouse restaurant.

Check out several recent illustrations that provide a glimpse at how Old Petty might look.
