Taman Negara National Park, nestled in Malaysia’s heartland, is a national treasure. This ancient rainforest sprawls across Pahang, Kelantan, and Terengganu, inviting explorers to experience its natural beauty.

Situated in the central region of Peninsular Malaysia , Taman Negara is accessible from the town of Kuala Tahan. Its location spans across the boundaries of three states, providing an extensive natural landscape to explore.

Hiking Trails in the Taman Negara National Park

Taman Negara National Park has various hiking trails that cater to different skill levels and interests. The following trails vary in difficulty and length, offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the beauty and diverse ecosystems of the park.

Canopy Walkway Trail (1.2km, 30min): This trail leads to the renowned Canopy Walkway, offering an elevated perspective through the rainforest’s canopy. Visitors can experience a thrilling walk across suspension bridges while enjoying panoramic views.

Bukit Teresek Trail: (1.7km, 45min) Considered one of the more accessible trails, Bukit Teresek provides stunning viewpoints overlooking the dense jungle and the Tahan River. It’s a relatively short hike suitable for most visitors.

Bukit Indah Trail (3km, 2.5hrs): This trail offers a moderate hike through lush greenery, leading to Bukit Indah’s peak. Hikers can relish captivating views of the rainforest’s vastness from this vantage point.

Bumbun Tabing Trail (1.5km, 30min): Ideal for wildlife enthusiasts, this trail leads to an observation hide called Bumbun Tabing. Visitors can quietly observe and photograph the surrounding wildlife from this hideout.

Lata Berkoh Trail (3-5km, 2hrs): Leading to the picturesque Lata Berkoh waterfall, this trail provides an opportunity for a refreshing dip in the cool waters after a moderate hike through the forest.

Gunung Tahan Summit Trail (55km, 7-9 days): The trail to Gunung Tahan takes you to the top of Peninsular Malaysia’s highest peak. This challenging multi-day trek involves steep mountain ascents, descents, and river crossings. This trek involves proper planning, permits, and experienced guides due to its difficulty and length. A typical trekking package costs around 500 USD including guides, camping permits, and 4WD transfer to/from the trail.

Cruise Along the Tembeling River

River cruising in Taman Negara National Park offers a serene journey along the Tembeling River. Guided tours from Kuala Tahan unveil lush rainforest landscapes and diverse wildlife. Ride the Jungle Rapids

For an adrenaline rush, go ride the rapids in Taman Negara. Nearby Kuala Tahan there are seven sets of river rapids with rough waters, strong currents, and fast turns. While life jackets are provided by tour operators, you should still expect to get soaked. Wear a suitable clothing and pack your valuables in a waterproof bag.

Gua Telingga (Ear Cave): This is the closest cave to the park entrance and most accessible for a short trip. Visitors usually take a boat ride along the Tahan River which can be arranged at Kuala Tahan, then allowing about 30 minutes to explore the cave.

Gua Kepayang Besar and Gua Kepayang Kecil: These caves are located deeper in the jungle of Taman Negara. Visitors usually join guided tours to explore these caves, taking a boat up the Tembeling River to Kuala Keniam (1.5hrs) followed by a roughly 2 hour hike to the caves. A popular option is the 2-day 1-night trip which includes a unique overnight camp inside the cave.

How to Get to Taman Negara from Kuala Lumpur

Travelers can embark on an approximately 3 to 4-hour journey from Kuala Lumpur to Jerantut by bus or train. From Jerantut, a boat ride along the Tembeling River takes visitors to Kuala Tahan, the gateway to Taman Negara.

Taman Negara Trekking: Sleeping in a cave deep in the jungle

Taman Negara , the world’s oldest tropical forest, is located in the heart of Malaysia’s main peninsula. The trek is a multi-day experience and the crossing requires a certain level of physical and mental preparedness and appropriate clothing.

“You have no idea you can sweat (and smell 🙂) so much until you trek through the jungle” This was the motto of my group at the end of this incredible adventure!

I did the jungle trek in Taman Negara National Park in March 2023. I walked for hours in the middle of the jungle, showered in the river, ate dinner all together by candlelight, and slept in a huge cave in the wilderness. It was a challenging hike because of the conditions (the humidity level is very high in the jungle!), but it was definitely the best activity I did during my stay in Malaysia. This experience connects you with your ‘primitive self’, and with the wilderness. In this article I will detail everything I did to organise this adventure, what it involved and how much you can expect to pay.

How to get to Taman Negara National Park

Taman Negara National Park

Taman Negara is an incredible tropical rainforest located in the heart of the Malaysian peninsular. It is estimated to be over 130 thousand years old . You can enjoy a variety of activities in it, such as the canopy walkway, treetop walks with small wooden jetties, exploring local caves, venturing into the ‘ Lata Berkoh ‘ rapids on the river, and especially many jungle treks, some even lasting several days. The national park offers the opportunity to enjoy the view of the Tahan River with many resorts, hotels and restaurants located nearby.

It is possible to venture into the jungle on one’s own by taking short, marked loop trails. However, we highly recommend you to be accompanied by experienced local guides should you wish to undertake longer treks or make a multi-day trek. There is no telephone signal in the jungle , therefore it can be very dangerous. The lush flora makes it extremely difficult to orient oneself and follow the correct path. Not to mention the wildlife you may encounter, such as wild elephants, bears or, although rare, tigers. Do things conscientiously to fully enjoy this wonderful experience!

To reach the National Park there are convenient buses that will take you to Jerantut station in the Pahang region, whether you are coming from the north from the Cameron Highlands, or from the south from the capital Kuala Lumpur. I left from Kuala Lumpur and the ticket cost was about €4-5 for a total of 3 hours travel time. You can purchase ticke ts here on 12go Asia .

Once you arrive at the Jerantut bus station , you will find a cluster of minivan drivers who will offer to take you directly to the village of Kuala Negara in the National Park. A few years ago there were several options to reach the park from the Jerantut station, including a boat ride up the river, but after Covid, due to declining tourism, all these options were cancelled. For this reason, these minibuses may be a little overpriced. ALWAYS try to haggle, you can usually lower the price by a few euros!

Once you and the other travellers have found your driver, you will be dropped off in the town centre. Here you will find a tourist office where you can organise the activities to do in Taman Negara over the next few days. Once we arrived at the National Park, we were fortunate to stay at the Taman Negara River View Lodge for about 10 euros per night , taking advantage of my Genius 3 discount on Booking. The regular prices typically range around 20 euros per night. The room was very nice, and the morning river view was truly amazing.

Jungle trek and night in the cave

Programme in brief: this is a two-day loop trek in the jungle. You start in the morning with a small boat and travel up the beautiful Tahan River , which runs through the heart of the rainforest, to the entrance of the famous canopy walkway. You will then spend an hour here, walking along the towering forest trees via these rickety wooden jetties. Once this activity is over, you continue our walk through the jungle, lasting about six hours , to arrive at the huge cave where you will all prepare dinner together and camp for the night. The next morning, after breakfast, the second part of the trek lasting 4 hours will begin. This part takes you back along the river from where you will take the boat back to the starting point of the village, arriving at about 4 pm.

Note: by taking this route, wildlife sightings are less likely, although some groups have been lucky enough to spot elephants. On some occasions some groups even found elephants inside the cave! If you are less interested in the cave experience but more in spotting animals, the guides will be able to offer you other routes when you book.

At the expense of spotting fewer animals, my friends and I didn’t hesitate for a second and immediately chose to venture out on the multi-day trek. We did not want to miss the experience of sleeping in the wildest place ever!

The first day of the trek will start at 9am and the meeting point will be in front of the village tourist office. Breakfast is not included in the tour package, so make sure you have a nice energizing breakfast before arriving. The ‘ Anne ‘ restaurant will be open at that time so order a nice breakfast of omelets or pancakes before you leave! Be sure to arrive on time though, when we arrived there was already a very long queue of people waiting for their breakfast.

Preparations for the trek

Once in front of the tourist office, you will be divided into groups and start packing your backpack for the excursion. If you do not have a backpack, you can rent one directly on site for the price of 15 euros . You will be given a mat to sleep on during the night (please note that there will be no mattresses available) and a sleeping bag to sleep on. Water, food for dinner, two lunches and breakfast with the corresponding dishes will be equally distributed among all participants of the trek, so that everyone brings something. Your 30-40 litre rucksack will be almost completely full and will already weigh a lot, leaving little room for personal belongings. Later on I will recommend which essentials to take with you to avoid under or over packing.

Once you have packed your backpack, you will be ready to leave with your group. First, you will cross the river to get to the entrance of the national park, where you will buy your park entrance permit. From here, you will make a list of the things in your backpack, which you will hand over to a ranger. This practice is used to ensure that tourists do not leave dirt behind during the trek. Try to keep clean and take home with you all the rubbish you accumulate.

By this time it will be about 10 o’clock, and you will be ready to leave for your 6-hour trek into the Taman Negara jungle!

Here are the stops and experiences you will have during this jungle adventure:

Boat ride up the river

Your start and end of the jungle trek will be accompanied by sailing up the Tahan River. You’ll be taken to the starting point of the trek, and brought back to the village the next day. I love navigating the rivers with local boats, surrounded by pure nature, it really gives me a great sense of adventure and freedom. Enjoy this relaxing time to contemplate the oldest forest in the world! If you are lucky, you will spot some animals approaching the river to drink!

Canopy walk

For any organised trekking to Taman Negara, this is the first stop. The canopy walk is a walk in the treetops with small wooden pontoons suspended very high. It is a nice activity within the reach of anyone who wants to visit the nature park.

Jungle trekking

To sum up the six-hour jungle trek: YOU SWEAT . And when I say you sweat, I mean that the whole time you will feel like you just got out of the shower!

The trek is not technically difficult. The path is almost all flat, except for a few points where you will have to cross rivers or climb some logs to find the right path. However, the humidity makes it really challenging and complicated, especially considering how many hours you will have ahead of you. You will have three long stops in between, in which you can eat some snacks, drink water and catch your breath. Needless to say, we were always exhausted at these moments while our guides comfortably stopped to smoke cigarettes as if they had just woken up 😁

River shower

At the end of the 6 long hours, having almost reached the cave, it is time for a nice cool shower to get rid of all the sweat accumulated during the day. If you wish, you can try the river shower experience! There is no better way to connect with nature than this!

Note: Using the toilet during these two days will be amongst nature, so please do not throw your used toilet paper around. Keep it with you or burn it in the campfire in the evening.

Setting up camp for the night inside the cave

Once ‘showered’, it is time to enter the cave and start preparing the camp for the night. The first step, as our ancestors would have done: light a fire! Here you all go into the jungle to look for wood to use for the fire pit. Once you have lit the fire, you will have to look for your place for the night. When everyone is settled, the guides, together with anyone who would like to volunteer, will start preparing food for dinner. I must admit that our dinner was delicious! Rice with vegetables, and plenty for everyone.

Going to sleep

Once dinner was over, it was time to end the first tiring day by going to sleep. The feeling of going to sleep in the cave, with the candles giving a dim light that was gradually fading away, is something indescribable until you try it! You feel like reconnecting with your ancestors from the past, you feel vulnerable and strong at the same time. A unique experience!

The second day starts with a wake-up call at around 7.30am. I woke up before the alarm clock with the singing of the jungle birds, which had a really wonderful and distinctive song, and the jumping of the monkeys from branch to tree, visible from the upper opening of the cave. It was a beautiful and peaceful moment of connection with nature. After a while, my friend Giulia also woke up and we went for a little walk around the cave, listening to nature calmly waking up.

Breakfast for everyone, again prepared by our legendary guides, was around 8 a.m. We had as much coffee and tea as we could drink, and ate toast with jam or peanut butter, cakes and fresh oranges. Exactly what we needed to fuel the last 4 hours of trekking to the boat back to the village.

After breakfast, we all got ready in a hurry, clean up the cave making sure not to leave anything behind, and then set off again for the trek. For me, the final walk was exhausting! In the morning I woke up with a bit of a cold, probably from the humidity, and I didn’t feel in full strength to face the return journey. Eventually, we all made it to the end, where a well-deserved hot plate of instant noodles and a last swim in the river awaited us before returning to the village.

As you may have realised from reading this article, there is a high level of humidity in the jungle. There may be high or low rivers to cross (depending on Malaysia’s rainy season), mud, and the possibility of rain.

For these reasons just listed, it is essential to arrive with proper equipment.

Packing List

Here is a list of things that are best to have with you during these two days:

• Rain jacket. During our walk on the first day, it was going to rain. Having a rain jacket with you can really make a difference in these cases and prevent the flu.
• Technical material shirts . It is best to prefer technical, breathable and preferably merino shirts. These materials tend to dry quickly and you will be sure to have dry things on for the next day.
• Long socks up to above the ankle for leeches. There were no problems with leeches in our group, although some people found them on their shoes or ankles. For this reason, it is better to have high shoes to protect your skin. Before going to bed, you can ask someone to take a look at your legs just in case!
• Suitable water-repellent hiking shoes . You will have to cross rivers and mud in several places, so if you don’t want to say goodbye to your shoes and not get your feet wet, bring high, water-repellent shoes.
• Small hiking backpack . If you do not have a medium or small backpack with you, the guides will rent you one. For your comfort and the well-being of your back, it is still better to have your own backpack.
• Some snacks or energy drinks. To replenish the salts lost through sweating, it can be a good idea to add mineral salts to your water or buy some energy drinks.
• Mosquito repellent. Mosquitoes are present in the jungle, although in smaller numbers than I expected. Take the repellent with you and spray it every 2 hours.
• Medicines to decongest the nose . If, like me, you are prone to colds, consider bringing some medicines or tissues that can help you against the dampness.
• Ear plugs. This is a tip for those who are light sleepers. With the rumbling of sounds in the cave, you don’t want to find yourself staying up all night if there is someone in your group who snores! 🙂
• The best time to do the jungle trek is during the dry season, which runs from around October to April . Keep in mind that Malaysia has an equatorial climate, so there is rainfall all year round, albeit less in some months.
• There is no telephone reception in the jungle . You will not have phone reception for the entire two days, so it is essential to stay with the group at all times and not to venture out alone on unmarked trails, otherwise you risk to get lost and not be able to call for help. Always rely on your guide for anything you need.
• Travel insurance is a must for any extreme activity abroad, especially in South-East Asia. Even if problems rarely occur, it is better to be covered in case they do. We use SafteyWing and recommend it to anyone travelling anywhere in the world.

The jungle trek in Taman Negara was not one of the most scenic treks I have ever done. The scenery remains more or less the same most of the time, and the weather conditions are not favourable. As an experience though, it was one of the best I have ever had! It was challenging and stimulating. We had a lot of laughs with the whole group, especially about how sweaty and tired we were, and sleeping in the cave was a great feeling that I will never forget. I had never slept in such a wild and primordial situation before, I will always remember it!

Basic facts about Taman Negara

There is a high mountain, located in the central-eastern part of Peninsular Malaysia, called Tahan Range. It is separated from the main watershed of the Malay Peninsula, but there is the highest peak of this land- Gunung Tahan (2187 m). The peak itself, as well as the whole mountain range, is covered by deep rainforest. While in the high mountain areas the forest consists of low trees and bush, in the low mountain foot it is a gorgeous deep equatorial jungle. And the whole mountain with the lowlands around it today is turned into a national park- the oldest national park in Malaysia.

This park’s name is Taman Negara , which simply means… „National Park”. Yes, it doesn’t have a specific name, but it still has become one of the most famous national parks in the whole of Southeast Asia. It is not just old, but also very large in area, shared by three Malaysian states- Pahang, Kelantan, and Terengganu. However, its most famous part is in its southwestern part, in Pahang State.

Taman Negara in Pahang has its starting point, a „base camp” for exploring this part of the national park. It is a village, called Kuala Tahan, located at Tembeling and Tahan rivers confluence. From there, you can penetrate deeper and deeper into the jeep jungle, by jungle trails or by boat on the rivers. Some of the treks are nice walks in the jungle, while others can be difficult and long trekking expeditions, including the trek which reaches Gunung Tahan Peak.

Our trip to Taman Negara

Since Taman Negara is one of the most important and representative places in Peninsular Malaysia, we decided to include it in our Peninsular Malaysia itinerary . Most visitors reach Taman Negara from Kuala Lumpur, but we came from Tioman Island . We had to travel by one ferry and three buses, since it is the best possible way to connect these two destinations, anyway, it was not too difficult.

First we back from Tioman Island by ferry to Mersing in the morning, then we got an afternoon bus to Kuantan. There are several buses from Mersing to Kuantan, and the whole trip is around 3 hours. We spent one night in Kuantan, and on the next day, we got the bus to Jerantut, the nearest city to the southwestern part of Taman Negara, for 2 hours. And from Jerantut, there was another hour and a half by another bus (which now doesn’t exist anymore) to Kuala Tahan, our Taman Negara „base camp”.

Geography of Taman Negara, Pahang

As usual, we wanted to experience the things to do in Taman Negara by identifying the places of interest in the area, as well as some specific events, traditions or something else that can’t be found anywhere else. But first, we started by making a „geographical image” of the place, and what is the most essential, representative and specific. Then we could think about where and how can experience and enjoy it.

So, one of the most important features of Taman Negara is the forest. A real equatorial rainforest, that is said to be one of the oldest on the Earth. Peninsular Malaysia is located within the equatorial geographical zone, and the rainforest is its most representative feature, at least inside the mainland. In fact, it was the most important reason why we included it in our Peninsular Malaysia geographical itinerary.

But the area of Taman Negara is not just a jungle. There is more than this- rivers, even some waterfalls or at least rapids, as well as some karst systems. The area is hilly and mountainous, reaching its highest point at Gunung Tahan.

And there is something more- the human culture. In Taman Negara you can find some of the oldest aboriginal tribes in Peninsular Malaysia- people called Orang Asli. They have their villages in the jungle, and you can meet them, becoming familiar with their way of life.

Thus we determined our things to do in Taman Negara- to try, taste and enjoy its incredibly beautiful rainforest, and all the interesting spots and places hidden in it.

Kuala Tahan- the „base camp”

This is where we spent three nights. Kuala Tahan is the starting point of most of the things to do in Taman Negara. It is a resort village, located at the confluence of Tahan and Tembeling rivers. In fact, you can see more tourists than locals there. Kuala Tahan consists of two main, and several smaller streets, and many small hotels and guesthouses. Don’t expect anything luxury- this place is much proper for travelers, backpackers, and adventurers. From there, the only thing that you have to do is to descend to the river’s wharf and its floating restaurants and get on a boat- to the other bank, or a river cruise.

In Kuala Tahan, there are many tour companies, offering various tours (you can see them around the center of the village, as well as in the round building over the riverside). And if you want to experience the jungle in full, you have to join some of them. But some of the things to do in Taman Negara you can do by yourself, no need for tours or guides.

Things to do in Taman Negara, Pahang

So, here are the things to do in the Pahang part of Taman Negara- the things that we also did, as well as the things that we didn’t do, but really wanted to try if we had more time. In general, there are three main types of things to do, and they can be combined.

Hike in the jungle

To hike in the rainforest of Taman Negara is the best way to feel and touch this geographical zone. Just like the rainforest of Amazonia, this one is very rich in plants and animals. You can see plants of various sizes, as the largest and highest of them are the Tualang trees. If you are lucky, somewhere deep in the jungle you can see Rafflesia, the largest flower on the Earth.

There are a lot of animal species too. It is almost sure that you will see the monkeys. But there are many more- Malaysian gaur, various kinds of deers, wild pigs, Malayan tapir, even tigers, and elephants. However, they are much rarer. Most of the animals are shy and hidden much deeper inside the jungle. There are also a lot of birds, reptiles, and insects.

The jungle is not silent. When you walk through it, you can hear a lot of birds, but the noisiest creatures there are cicadas. Their constant sound is coming from everywhere around you. Sometimes you can here other mysterious sounds. And they are mysterious because in most cases you can’t see the animals making these sounds, but only can hear them, somewhere deep in the jungle.

So, let’s make a jungle adventure in Taman Negara. You don’t need to bring a machete with you to make your way through the jungle unless you want to try it in the most difficult way. There are several trails, and let’s start with the easiest one.

Classic easy trek- Bukit Teresek and Canopy Walk trail

This is actually an easy walk in the jungle. You don’t need a guide to do it, and you can make it for 2-4 hours (depending on which version of it you will walk). I can say that this is the first thing that you can do in Taman Negara, for your first impression.

Entrance fees

First, you have to go to the river wharf with floating restaurants. Then, cross the river for 1 RM. On the other bank is Mutiara Resort- a complex of bungalows. The first thing that you have to do is to go to the tourist center, from where you have to pay your entrance fee for the national park, and the Canopy Walk Bridge.

Currently, the entrance fee for Taman Negara is 1 RM per person. I have read about plans to make it 30 RM for adults and 15 RM for children, from January 1, 2020. But seems it is postponed, for now, we were there at the end of January’2020 and the fee was still 1 RM. However, have in mind that it seems you can expect the new price at any moment. For the Canopy Walk, you have to pay an additional 5 RM and have to do it in the center, not at the Canopy Walk itself.

Canopy Walk Bridge

Then, the whole path of the Bukit Teresek trail is well arranged by wooden boards and stairs on the slopes. Just follow the signs. Canopy Walk Bridge is a little aside from the main path to the top. When you arrive there, you have to wait in a queue, then follow the instructions of the staff.

Canopy Walk Bridge is one of the longest in the world. However, a part of it is currently closed. But it still provides an exciting experience in the high layers of the forest. Just be sure you are not afraid of heights. After the bridge, you can back to the main path to Bukit Teresek.

Bukit Teresek Hill

Then, after another 20 m ascending, you will reach Bukit Teresek. The peak is 334 m high, but the panoramic view to the distant Gunung Tahan is a bit behind the highest point. From there, if you just want an easy walk, better back on the same path to Mutiara Resort and Kuala Tahan. But if you feel more adventurous, proceed on the path, which descends steeply down to Tahan River.

There is a path along Tahan River, part of three other trails (that I mention below). When you reach it, just turn left and after 45 mins to a 1-hour walk, you will back to Mutiara Resort. On your way, you can stop for a rest at a nice riverside place with a small pavilion, called Lubuk Simpon. The whole trek (its longest version) can be done for 3-4 hours, and if you don’t have time for more, or just not into too many adventures, it can be enough to „taste” the equatorial forest of Taman Negara.

Riverside hike- Lata Berkoh

You can do this trail by yourself too. Being a riverside hike, it is relatively plain, without too many ascends and descends. It follows the Tahan River, and the first half of it is also a part of two other trails. It is a nice, but not a round trail- you have to back on the same path to Mutiara and Kuala Tahan. But it has some adventurous parts- if you want to accomplish it to Lata Berkoh, you have to cross the river. And it is natural and wild- no bridges for crossing. You have to cross the river on foot, and in the middle, it is a bit deeper than your waist (better don’t do it on a rainy day!). But that’s no problem, a little further is Lata Berkoh.

Lata Berkoh is called „waterfall”, but in fact, it is just a rapid. It is not so spectacular, but the whole landscape of the area is really wild. There you can swim or just play in the river (as you would already cross it). Finally, you back in the same way, unless you have arranged a boat to wait for you (it would be a special tour, more expensive than the normally offered tours). The whole trail would take one whole day- in both directions it is 23 km (14,5 miles).

Night jungle watching- Kumbang trail

First, let me explain something about the night jungle watching. As you know, many animals sleep or hide in the daytime, but in the night, they become active. They go hunting or looking for a partner. So, the chances to see wild animals in the night is much higher than in the daytime.

For this purpose, there are several hides (in Malay called „bumbung”)- observation huts in the forest. The nearest one is called Bumbung Tahan, and it is just 10 m walk from Mutiara Resort. Some of the hides are arranged for overnight, with beds and even a simple bathroom. And Bumbung Kumbang is the most popular one since it is located in an area with the highest chances to see more of the wildlife.

Bumbung Kumbang is relatively far, so this activity requires two days, spending the night in the hide. You can go there on the Kumbang trail for around 6 hours, or by boat. For this adventure, it is advisable to join a tour with a guide, which includes a boat cruise on the Tembeling River. Depending on the number of travelers, the price starts from 240 RM per person. But if you do it by yourself, you have to book a night in Bumbung Kumbang on the same day or the previous day.

Caves in the jungle- Gua Telinga and Tenor trail

This is a short trek, on the western side of Tembeling River, west of Kuala Tahan. It can be accomplished for around 2-3 hours. The most attractive part of it is Gua Telinga Cave. Its name means „Ear Cave”, derived from a rock formation shaped like an ear. Unfortunately, now the cave is closed for visiting after a rock collapse accident. You just can hike the trail, but can’t enter the cave.

Caves in the jungle- Gua Kepayang and other caves on Keniam trail

This is a longer and more adventurous trek. Normally, it is organized for 2 days and 1 night, by joining a tour that every tour company offers in Kuala Tahan. It includes a boat ride to Kuala Terenggan, then hike on the Keniam trail and finally back from Kuala Keniam by another boat ride (or the same route but in the opposite direction).

The trek itself is very exciting, but the most exciting and adventurous part is the cave’s experience. There are several caves on the route- Gua Kepayang Kecil, Gua Kepayang Besar, Gua Daun Menari and Gua Luas. And the tour includes spending the night in Gua Kepayang Besar, with a shower in a river, campfire and candlelight dinner. So you can not only explore the jungle but also the wildlife in a cave. Again the price starts for 300 per person.

Climb Mount Gunung Tahan trail

This is the most essential trek in Taman Negara. It starts from Kuala Tahan and ends in Sungai Relau, northwest of Gunung Tahan peak. Normally, it is planned for 7 days and 6 nights. It is not just a „walk in the jungle for tourists”, but it is a real jungle expedition. You spend the nights in campsites and walk through various altitude zones. The highest peak- Gunung Tahan can be cold- the temperature can drop down to 4 C, and there are even witnesses for frost! It means that you have to bring more clothes too.

Probably you can do it by yourself, but as far as I know, by law, it is required to join a tour with a guide. The price for a whole group can be between 2800 and 3500 RM, so if you are more people together, it would not be so expensive.

Waterfall in the jungle- Four Steps Waterfall

This is an additional route, with some tour companies add to the Gunung Tahan trail. It takes some additional time (and price), depending on the tour. The waterfall is deep in the national park and the jungle, and the route is the hardest of all Taman Negara routes. Definitely not for people without experience. Reaching the waterfall is maybe the most difficult adventure of Taman Negara, but for those who like such activities, it would be unforgettable! Don’t be surprised if you see an elephant or even a tiger!

More jungle adventures

There are some easier, but also exciting tours for exploring the rainforest. The most attractive of them is the night walk in the jungle. It is a one-two hours tour, usually arranged for the late evening. Unlike watching animals from a hide (bumbung), it includes walking. To see more animals, just you have to walk quietly, avoiding noise. Of course, you can do it by yourself, but joining a tour is recommendable, first for your safety. And also, you can learn more by the guide, so the trek would be more meaningful. Usually, the price is 30 RM per person.

Another experience is night safari in the rainforest. It is the same as the jungle walk, but just you penetrate in the jungle by 4WD vehicle, and thus you can penetrate much further. They know the best places to stop and observe the night wildlife, so it can be worth trying too. The duration is 2 hours, and the price is usually 45 RM per person.

Jungle hiking tips

There are various „levels” of exploring the jungle. You can try the easiest way in the classic Bukit Teresek and Canopy Walk Bridge trail- it is just like a walk in a normal city park. At the same time, the most difficult way is the trek including the Four Steps Waterfall, which requires enough strength, hiking experience, and hiking gear .

Most of the trails are in low altitude, so the weather is hot and wet. The paths are wild and uneven, often muddy. So you need proper hiking shoes. Then, the weather is not always stable. So, bring a raincoat or poncho. Yes, it is hot, but to be wet is not a good idea- not good for your health, for your luggage and your camera or mobile.

For longer treks with spending the night in the jungle, of course, you have to bring more things like torch or flashlight. Tents are normally provided by the tour companies. And for hiking Gunung Tahan, you need also some warm clothes, because as I mentioned above, the temperature may drop significantly there. And finally, don’t forget repellents against mosquitos!

We made our easy classical trek to Bukit Teresek, reached the peak and descent on the other side of the peak to the main path along Tahan River. We had enough time and before back to Mutiara and Kuala Tahan, we wanted to reach a nearby bumbung (hide), called Bumbung Tabing. I confess that I was wearing sandals (which was ok on the wooden boards’ path to Bukit Teresek, but not so convenient on the muddy descending path on its other side). But Ying Ying and our children were wearing simple hiking shoes.

Anyway, we could see various insects like ants, spiders or beetles, and we also saw short and small stretching worms on the leaves. Soon my daughter said: „One of these worms wanted to bite me!”, then she was nervous and scared, and wanted me to bear her on my back. In the beginning, I just told her to not worry, they are not dangerous, however, I also didn’t know what actually was this. But because I saw our children scared, we decided to turn back to Mutiara.

We stopped in the middle for a rest, and Ying Ying also said that a worm tried to bite her. Then I looked at my foot, and I was horrified to see that it was covered in blood. Then I realized that these tiny worms were leeches. Four leeches were sucking my blood, and maybe there have been more of them because the blood was running. And interestingly, I couldn’t feel any pain, nothing!

Float on a jungle river

There are two main rivers in the area- Tembeling River, and the smaller Tahan River, which joins Tembeling exactly at Kuala Tahan. And there are speed boats on these two rivers in both directions.

Reaching Kuala Tahan from Jerantut

This is a cruise, which is not exactly a „thing to do” in Taman Negara, but more a way of transportation to reach or leave Kuala Tahan. The cruise is approximately 3 hours long and starts from Kuala Tembeling Jetty, which you can reach by shuttle from Jerantut or Kuala Besut. Then, the boat ride is 45 RM. We haven’t tried it, and we have heard that it is not so comfortable, but the sights and views around the river, especially approaching Kuala Tahan, are really worth.

Tahan River cruise

This is a tour, offered by every tour company in Kuala Tahan. Actually, it is Lata Berkoh cruise, because the boat reaches a place just 10 mins walk before Lata Berkoh. On its way, there are one or two stops (depending on the tour you book)- The Fish Sanctuary (Kela Sanctuary), and a place with high trees. We joined this trip, paying 240 RM per boat (later we found a company, offering it for 200 RM), and a boat can bring not more than 4 persons.

At the end of January, the river water is not so pure, looks muddy and brownish, due to the rain, so we didn’t swim. We only fed the fish in the sanctuary and relaxed at Lata Berkoh. But the cruise itself, floating in the thick corridor of the jungle was the most spectacular part, and only for this, it is really worth it.

Tembeling River cruise- rapids shooting

The tour companies offer a simple river cruise on the Tembeling River, which includes rapids shooting. When the boat passes through rapids, or even without rapids, the driver intentionally shake the boat or use a stick on the water to make everybody wet. And yes, this is really fun (just protect your camera and mobile- they give a dry waterproof bags for that). The cruise is usually 40-45 RM per person.

In addition, you can enjoy kayaking in both of the rivers, if you know how to use kayaks , although it requires a local guide. It would be a more exciting river adventure, especially if it is combined with fishing. 

But most of the cruises on Tembeling River are combined with other activities- Kumbang Hide trail, Keniam Trail or visiting Orang Asli village. We chose the last one, thus we combined it with the third kind of activity- meeting the local Orang Asli people.

Meet the Orang Asli people

Orang Asli are the oldest people living in Peninsular Malaysia. They are divided into 18 tribes in three groups. And the oldest group is called Semang, or Negrito. It is unclear where they come from, but they look like Africans, Papuans or Australian Aborigines, so they probably have some distant common origin. And here, in Taman Negara lives one of these tribes- Batek (or Bateq).

Bateq are nomadic people, hunters in the jungle. Most of them don’t have constant villages, but more from one place to another, depending on the season, animal habits, or death of a family member. But there are now two constant villages, due to the growing tourism. And the people who live there have adopted some attributes from the modern civilization, like modern clothes, plastic, and metal accessories, and using money.

So we visited them as a part of our Tembeling River cruise. Yes, tourism definitely impacted their life. They can speak Malay and even some English. And they accept tourists every day. So, various members of their village show the tourists how to make fire, how to blow through a pipe with an arrow, and the guide teaches about their way of life. Anyway, although now the Bateq people’s life is not so authentic, it is still worth to visit them and learn more about them. The whole combined trip with rapids shooting was 60 RM per person.

Transportation- how to reach Taman Negara in Pahang

As I mentioned above, to explore Taman Negara, you have to reach Kuala Tahan. The direct starting point for Kuala Tahan is Jerantut, a small city in the middle of Peninsular Malaysia. And there are also tourist buses and vans from Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Cameron Highlands.

We were lucky to use a cheap bus that travels between Jerantut and Kuala Tahan for only 7 RM. But this service was stopped from February 1st, 2020, so now all the ways to travel to Kuala Tahan are relatively expensive. Buses and vans from Kuala Lumpur and the other popular destinations are from 90 RM and above. We could find a van (arranged by one of the tour companies in Kuala Tahan) to Cameron Highlands for 70 RM, and probably the price in the opposite direction is the same.

So, the cheapest way to reach Kuala Tahan is probably first to travel to Jerantut. Then, from there you can find a van to Kuala Tahan for 25 RM, or for 5 RM to go to Kuala Tembeling Jetty and take the boat to Kuala Tahan.

Accommodation

There are a lot of small hotels and guesthouses in Kuala Tahan. Most of them are not so cheap, but you still can find some budget options in Booking and Agoda . We found Greenland Guesthouse- several bungalows, located relatively far from the center. But the location is not a big problem, because Kuala Tahan is enough small.

Another option is to live in Mutiara Resort , but it is more expensive, with prices from 300 RM per room and above. Danz Eco Resort is a nice place too, but it is far from the center. However, its location can be better for some of the activities (they also offer some tours).

If you are looking for an easier way to visit Taman Negara, or you have a limited time, joining a 1-day tour could be a proper option. So, take a look at these two options, they all start from Kuala Lumpur:

• From Kuala Lumpur: Full-Day Taman Negara National Park . This is about 13 hours long tour. You travel from and to Kuala Lumpur totally 6 hours, and the rest of the time you enjoy the best of the basic activities in Taman Negara- Canopy Walk Bridge, rapid shooting, Orang Asli visit, and nice lunch in Kuala Tahan at the river bank. 
• From Kuala Lumpur: Full Day Tour To Taman Negara . This is almost similar tour as the first one, just a bit longer, which can give you more time to enjoy the same activities. 

Food and other important tips

Kuala Tahan is a small place, and you can’t find many things that are in the big cities. No malls, no banks, no ATM, no pharmacies. We were in a lack of Malaysian Ringgits, but there is no way to change any money. At least some of the tour companies allow paying by credit cards, and it was the only way to pay without MYR in cash.

There are only several small supermarkets, from where you can at least load your food supplies for your jungle treks. But at least there are some good restaurants too- in the center, and at some of the guesthouses. And the best of them are the floating restaurants at the jetty- they are not only as cheap as the other restaurants, but also provide a nice environment at the riverside and the surrounding jungle.

We spent in Taman Negara 3 nights, in Greenland Guesthouse, and we had two days to try the best of the rainforest. On the first day, we made the classical Bukit Teresek and Canopy Walk Bridge trek. And on the second day we made the two cruises- on Tahan River to Lata Berkoh, and on Tembeling River to Orang Asli village, including rapids shooting. Of course, it was not enough to fully experience Taman Negara, but at least we could use our time in the best way.

Then we left Taman Negara by van to Cameron Highlands , our next destination in Peninsular Malaysia. And I can say that we experienced the best of this important feature of this country- the equatorial rainforest.

As the largest national park in Malaysia, Taman Negara is a popular destination to visit. Estimated to be over 130 million years old, it is among the world’s oldest rainforests.

The park is spread across three states and contains within it some of the oldest land on peninsular Malaysia. As such, the park is home to a diverse range of geological formations, flora and fauna – many of them rare and endangered.

Animals like tigers, leopards and elephants as well as numerous species of birds make this park a top spot for seeing wildlife in their natural habitat. Plus, a stunningly diverse tropical rainforest, complete with hills and mountains, makes this a top spot for hiking.

It’s a beautiful part of Malaysia and so easily accessible from places like Kuala Lumpur.

Top 17 Things To Do In Taman Negara, Pahang [2024]

Here are the best Taman Negara, Pahang activities. Read through and select the ones that fit your interests and timeframe.

Some of these activities you can do yourself and some require a tour.

There are travel agencies in Kuala Tahan, the town where you stay to access the park, or some hotels, like the Mutiara, that can book these tours for you.

However, the best way to visit Taman Negara is with a special package tour that includes all your meals, transport, accommodation and activities. This gives you the best value and the easiest experience. You can find our list of these here.

Before you do anything in Taman Negara, whether it’s a solo hike or a tour, you do need an entry permit.

Permits are just RM1 per person currently and last for the duration for your stay. It’s an extra RM5 per camera/smart phone you want to take in as well.

There is talk that this will increase dramatically soon. I find it surpising how cheap it is now. If the money is pumped into the park, this would be a good thing.

These need to be bought at the Park Centre which is in Mutiara Taman Negara Resort.

If you are short on time, the main things I recommend you do is get out on the water – primarily to Lata Berkoh. This way is just so beautiful and much prettier than the journey to an Orang Asli village – and go on a hike. Heading to the Canopy Walk and Bukit Teresek is a good way to tick this off.

You could do this in a day easily.

Take A Hike To Bukit Teresek

As it’s a national park, one of the best things to do in Taman Negara Malaysia is hiking. A particularly good hike is the trail to Bukit Teresek, where you can admire the surrounding forest and mountains. 

At 334 metres, Bukit Teresek is a modest hike and takes about 45 minutes to reach the summit from the park headquarters at Kuala Tehan. There is wooden boardwalk the whole way.

There are both flat and steep sections of the track. The first section is relatively flat and follows a boardwalk through the rainforest. It is an excellent area for bird watching with many species found here. The final section of the track becomes quite steep and follows a set of stairs. You will get very sweaty – bring plenty of water!

From the summit, you will have lovely views of the forest below. When the weather is clear, it’s also possible to see both Gunung Perlis, and Gunung Tahan – Peninsular Malaysia’s tallest mountain.

To get here, follow the signs for the Canopy Walk and keep going up when the Canopy Walk turns off to the right.

You do not need to do a tour to do this walk. It is quite straightforward. It is possible to do tours that visit here and the Canopy Walk if that’s what you would prefer though.

Go Rapid Shooting

One of the more unique activities to add to your Taman Negara itinerary is rapid shooting, where you jump into a wooden boat and shoot the rapids of the Tembling River.

Most people experience this Taman Negara activity on their way to an Orang Asli settlement. These thrilling boat rides involve high speed turns with crews aiming the boats straight into the rapids. There are seven sets of rapids down the Tembeling River.

Be prepared as you will be splashed by water from all directions! Dress appropriately. Life jackets are provided, but a waterproof bag for valuables (and a change of clothes) is recommended.

Enjoy A Night Jungle Walk

When it comes to Taman Negara what to do at night, one of the best options is a jungle walk. The jungle changes at night and is vastly different from the daytime, with strange and interesting sights and sounds.

Usually jungle night walks are done on tours where you can walk from here to Tahan Hide, where the salt lick attracts native animals. It’s not uncommon to see reindeers, boar and lizards.

You will also see a range of plants and insects more active at night. It’s advised to bring a torch so you can make the most of your jungle night walk.

Visit An Orang Asli Settlement

Taman Negara has two tribes that live in the mountains – the Batek tribe and Semokberi tribe. The Orang Asli, or native people, are distinct from the Malay population and meeting with them is one of the top Taman Negara things to do.

These nomadic tribes live simple, traditional lives, moving from place to place in search of food and resources depending on the season. They hunt food from the forest and live in huts of leaves and ratan.

However, these days about 70% of their food is bought with money they make from tourism.

These settlements live by their ancient traditions and have a strong community spirit and visiting them is both unique and fascinating. You’ll be introduced to some of their practices such as lighting a fire (difficult in the rainforest) and shooting a blowpipe – a traditional weapon the Orang Asli use for hunting.

They also showed us how they sand the wood and make their weapons using natural resources from the jungle.

To visit an Orang Asli settlement, you need to join a tour where a guide will introduce you to the settlement and help translate the local language into English and also help you do activities in the village.

Your tour will take a boat ride to the settlement. This can be combined with rapid shooting, as above, or you can take a less thrilling option.

Cruise To Lata Berkoh

An excellent option of the things to do at Taman Negara is cruise the Sungai Tahan River to Lata Berkoh. 

The main attraction of this cruise is the beautiful scenery and it’s honestly beyond stunning. I absolutely loved it and it was my favourite thing to do in Taman Negara. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU DO THIS TOUR!!

The water is also quite clear and you can see fish from the boat as well.

However, it’s not just sitting back and soaking it all in. You also get to stop and visit the Tualang Tree along the way and the Kelah Sanctuary (more information about these attractions below).

To actually get to the final part at Lata Berkoh, you need to hike for about 20 minutes. There’s no boardwalk here but the path is in good condition. We hiked it with a 6 year old without a problem.

At the end, you reach Lata Berkoh. Lata Berkoh is a stunning spot with its deep pools and cascade.

You can swim here which is what we planned to do. However, our guide did not come with us here and it was very unclear where it was safe to swim with plenty of rapids and fast running water. Upstream seemed safer but there were big rocks to climb over to get there.

With a 6 year old, I did not feel safe giving it a go. I would have loved to though!

After the hike back, the cruise takes you back to Kuala Tahan. It’s a great activity that takes 2-3 hours all up depending on how long you spend at the swimming place.

The water is shallow in a lot of places so you can only do this in a very flat boat that take up to four passengers. We had a man sitting at the front of ours (as well as the guide and driver at the back) to get us through some shallow sections.

Feed The Fish At Kelah Sanctuary

On the way to Lata Berkoh, you can stop at Kelah Sanctuary and feed the fish. This research and conservation centre is located in Lubuk Tenor and is only 20 minutes away from Kuala Tahan. You could also hire a boat to take you here specifically.

Pellets are provided so that you can throw food at the fish and watch them swarm to eat it up. The clear water makes seeing the kelah a delight and, in the dry season, schools of fish can be seen. 

However, sometimes there are no fish so this activity can’t be guaranteed.

Visit The Huge Tualang Tree

With a 130 million year history, there are bound to be some big trees in Taman Negara. Among the largest and tallest of all the trees in Taman Negara is Tualang Tree, and it is worth visiting. At a height of 65 metres, this tree is as tall as a 20 storey building. 

Stop at Tualang Jetty down the Tahan River to capture a picture of this enormous tree, although it’s hard to appreciate the full size from close up. Its size lends the area a special and ancient feeling.

Eat At A Taman Negara Floating Restaurant

With quite a few floating restaurants around, one of the things to do while in Taman Negara is eat at one of them!

You can find floating restaurants offering breakfast, lunch and dinner. Although I did find most shut at lunch time when I was there during Ramadan. Most floating restaurants are located at the jetty of Kuala Tahan where you can watch the Tembling River sweep past.

Options include the Taman Negara Floating Restaurant, Arissa Floating Restaurant and Kuala View Restaurant among others.

If you’re keen on fishing, Taman Negara can be an excellent spot. The dry months are best for fishing, and the deeper you head into the jungle, the better the fishing gets.

Popular fishing spots include Rincing and Kuala Perkai. Of course, bringing fishing gear into the jungle is difficult for tourists, and so there are tours you can do that include gear and transport to fishing spots.

There are many other fishing spots, some located up to 5 hours away by boat, but the pristine jungle setting makes fishing there one of the best things to do in Taman Negara Malaysia.

Take The Plunge At Four Steps Waterfall

If you’re up for a challenging hike, follow the track to the phenomenal Four Steps Waterfall. This hugely powerful waterfall can be reached by following the Gunung Tahan trail (which leads to the highest point on Peninsular Malaysia) and detouring to the Four Steps Waterfall. 

Rarer wildlife can be spotted on the way as you delve deeper into the jungle, and part of the journey takes you through the river. When you reach the waterfall, you’ll be rewarded with amazing views and the sound of the powerful falls. The waterfall can be fierce and swimming is definitely not advised.

This hike should only be done as part of a tour. It is notoriously difficult and best done by people with hiking experience.

This is a less explored track but one where you can be rewarded with a stunningly beautiful natural environment.

Go Bird Watching

With hundreds of species of birds in Taman Negara, both native and migratory, one of the top things to do Taman Negara National Park offers is bird watching.

Kuala Tahan, close to the park headquarters, is one of the best places to spot birds. You can stay in a hide and wait to spot birds or see them on a walk. It can often be easier to hear birds than see them, which makes the hides super useful for this purpose.

Many endangered species like the Masked Finfoot, the Wreathed Hornbill and the Large Green-Pigeon can be found in Taman Negara, and you may be lucky enough to spot one.

May through to August is the best time for bird watching.

Admire The Views On The Canopy Walkway

When you’re planning what to do in Taman Negara Malaysia, no Taman Negara to do list is complete without a walk on the Canopy Walkway. It is arguably the top attraction the national park offers.

The Canopy Walkway is a series of suspension bridges that was originally built for research, and whilst it wasn’t intended as a tourist attraction, it is now certainly one of the most popular things to do in Taman Negara. 

At around 550 metres long, the Canopy Walk is one of the world’s longest suspension bridges and is a great place to admire the views below, and surrounding the area.

Reaching it takes about 30 minutes by foot from the park headquarters on a boardwalk. The suspension bridge is up to 45 metres above the ground, and you’ll see the stunning rainforest below. There are birds and wildlife like the long-tailed macaques.

The walk is decent and there are quite a few stairs to reach the start of the walk. It can be a little confusing, but it is straightforward enough to do without a tour. It is closed on Fridays.

Enjoy A Night 4WD Safari

As an alternative to a night jungle walk, why not try a night 4WD safari? 

These 4WD safari tours save you from walking and allow you to penetrate deeper into the forest. They start at night from Kuala Tahan and take you to the best places to see wildlife. You are likely to see wildcat, wild boar and all the sights and sounds of the jungle at night.

Tours usually go for two hours and are affordable. 

Go Swimming At Lubok Simpon

The hike to Lubok Simpon is one of the easiest in Taman Negara and offers a great introduction to the national park.

From Kuala Tahan, it’s only a 1 kilometre walk to Lubok Simpon. You’ll see birds and walk along the river before reaching the natural tannin dyed pool at Lubok Simpon. 

This is not only a lovely spot to relax but also a nice spot to swim with a sandy beach area.

Explore The Limestone Caves

Taman Negara is an excellent spot to explore some caves, and the national park has its fair share of interesting limestone caves.

An easy walk from the park headquarters in Kuala Tahan is Gua Telinga. This cave is just 3 kilometres away and is known as the ear cave due to its unique shape. You need to crawl through an underground tunnel to enter, where bats inhabit the inside.

Deeper in the jungle are several other caves. These caves are usually visited as part of a multi-day tour where you can explore, hike the trail and spend the night inside a cave.

Gua Kepayang Kecil is one such option, as well as Kepayang Besar where people often camp overnight.

You need to take a tour to visit these caves.

Hide In A Wildlife Observation Hide

One of the reasons Taman Negara is great for seeing wildlife is the wildlife observation hides. Built like little huts, Malays refer to these hides as “bumbung” and they aid in observing animals without scaring them away.

Tahan Hide is just a short distance from the park headquarters and is an excellent spot to wait and see birds and other wildlife, especially at night, attracted by the nearby salt lick. 

Deer, porcupines and birds, wild boar and numerous insects can all be seen with patience. 

Head on a boat ride to another spot like Kumbang Hide. Located deeper into the jungle, this is a great area for spotting your sights on rarer animals. Rarer species like tapir, leopards and elephants can be seen in other hides located deeper in the jungle. 

Arrive By Boat From Kuala Tembeling

Kuala Tembeling is where both the Tembeling River and the Jelai River meet, and the jetty is about 17 kilometres away from the town of Jerantut. This town is a popular entry point to the national park, and if you’re entering from here, the way to go is by boat.

Both locals and foreigners enjoy this scenic boat ride to Taman Negara. It takes about three hours. The ferry is a simple wooden boat with a roof on top and whilst the trip is long, there’s no denying there are some wonderful views along the way.

Taman Negara is a wonderful place to stay overnight. There’s nothing quite like spending the night in an ancient rainforest. It makes for both a relaxing and rejuvenating stay.

There isn’t a huge range of accommodation options, but there are a number of hotels and guest houses that cater towards all budgets. 

Below you will find our Taman Negara accommodation recommendations including the best pick, a mid-range and a budget option.

BEST – Mutiara Taman Negara Resort Review

Mutiara Taman Negara Resort is the top spot to stay in Taman Negara. It’s the only resort to be located within the national park and the Park Centre is located here with trails starting from here.

This resort offers a range of rooms with all the creature comforts you need for a convenient stay. Options include both chalet and bungalow accommodation. Chalets include air-conditioning, an in-room safe, a balcony with chairs, flatscreen TV and a hot shower in a private bathroom, as well as a lovely traditional aesthetic. It is on the simple side, but very well done.

Up to 6 guests can stay in the one bedroom and quad chalets. WiFi is also available. We were surprised by how great it was actually, even in our chalet which was a solid 5-minute walk from reception.

A buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner are all served. Many rooms are half board, meaning breakfast and dinner are included. The accommodation can help to organise all your Mutiara Taman Negara activities like a jungle safari, an Orang Asli visit, as well as fishing permits and cave tours.

We found this a very easy place to stay.

MID-RANGE – Xcape Resort at Taman Negara Review

Xcape Resort is located in Kuala Tahan before crossing the Tembling River to the park headquarters. The resort offers guests free parking, in-room WiFi, an onsite bar and a daily housekeeping service.

Room options include double, twin and family rooms. Rooms are simple and minimalist, with no TV, safe or minibar, however they do have air conditioning. Some rooms include a balcony. Dorm rooms are also available for guests on a budget. Some of the rooms have private bathrooms whereas others are shared. 

The accommodation serves light snacks and refreshments in the bar, Malaysian fare in their onsite restaurant, and can also organise bicycle rental for guests to explore the area.

BUDGET – Balai Serama Guesthouse Review

Balai Serama Guesthouse is located further away from the park headquarters in Kampung Padang. Here you’ll find a spacious guest lounge, guest laundry facilities, an onsite restaurant serving local dishes and a buffet breakfast as well as rooms with half board.

Room types include standard rooms and one bedroom chalets with private bathrooms. The property is very clean and offers free parking for guests and a beautiful on-site garden.

How To Get To Taman Negara

It’s easy to get to Taman Negara by bus, train or car. However you get here, note that you are aiming for Kuala Tahan which is the town next to the entry point of the park.

Once you get to Kuala Tahan, you need to take a quick boat trip across the river to access the park itself. Kuala Tahan is home to shops, restaurants and sleeping options.

If you have your own car, great! You are good to go. You can also hire a car to get you there by clicking here.

Otherwise, the fastest way is by private taxi. You can find out prices and book a taxi from anywhere in Malaysia here .

If you are coming from Kuala Lumpur, your next best option is by shuttle bus. You can book it here .

The cheapest way is by bus from Kuala Lumpur to Jerantut. This takes longer and you’ll still need to get a taxi the final hour to Kuala Tahan. Click here for the latest timetables and bus prices.

If you are coming from Singapore or Johor Bahru, you can consider the so-called jungle train. Warning though, the departure and arrival times are not convenient, and it only takes you as far as Jerantut. You’ll still need to get a taxi from here to Kuala Tahan. Click here for more details .

The last time I took the taxi between Jerantut and Kuala Tahan, the price was RM80.

To get into the park itself, you simply go to the jetty and hop on the next boat departing. These cost RM1 per person and only take minutes. They depart frequently.

Taman Negara With Kids

For the most part, Taman Negara is very kid friendly. You may just want to avoid rapid shooting or the other longer hikes if your kids are young.

There are many walks from the Park Centre that take around an hour return, such as the canopy walkway and the hike to Lubok Simpon. Plus, the experience at an Orang Asli settlement can be very eye opening for kids and adults alike. My kids loved trying the blow dart!

A night jungle walk and observing animals from an observation hide are also great activities for families. I found the cruise to Lata Berkoh worked well too.

The best of Taman Negara: explore the world’s oldest rainforest

If you love nature and looking for an adventure into a tropical rain forest that won’t cost your life savings, Taman Negara National Park is the place to go. Located in Pahang , Malaysia it is the largest protected area in the country. When my collogues, friends and relatives and other travellers from different countries ask me what do you prefer as a must-visit place in Malaysia. 

Indeed the answer can not be one place but Taman Negara would be on the top of the list. It is tremendously beautiful and one of the must-visit places for tourists.

Furthermore, the rainforest will give you Amazon-like feelings due to its huge area which you can’t cover in a day. Now let’s find out how you can explore the world’s oldest rainforest, Taman Negara. 

WHAT IS COVERED IN THIS ARTICLE?

Taman Negara

Taman Negara is the Malay language which means National Park and this one is one of the most important National Parks of Malaysia. Situated in Pahang, Taman Negara has not only contributed to tropical life but it has historical significance as well. 

It is a 130 million years old virgin rainforest, in other words, the oldest rainforest of the world. The park houses over 15,000 plant species, 250 freshwater species, 675 bird species, and many more natural attractions.

The rainforest is an ecotourism hotspot for tourists all over the world due to its ecological and geographical features as well as exciting activities. 

This article will cover all the activities that you can do in Taman Negara, the best time to visit, places to eat, best staycations, and lastly some travel tips so that your Taman Negara tour would be effortless and easily accessible. Activities to do in Taman Negara

The National Park has many outdoor activities and each is more exhilarating than the last one. Here are the activities to do in Taman Negara which will make you thrilled and wanderlust. 

1. Canopy Walk

Canopy Walk is one of the major attractions and activities in Taman Negara due to its length which is 530 m long and renowned for being the longest canopy walkway in the world.

The walkway was built for research purposes, but in a short time, it has become the favourite attraction not only to locals but to international tourists as well. It’s situated 40 metres high from the ground, which is capable of giving a magnificent panoramic view of flora and fauna. 

Of course, there is the Wildlife Department that always supervises the safety aspect of all visitors. As it is a must-do activity in Taman Negara, you definitely should not avoid Canopy Walk. 

2. Jungle Trekking

When you’re in Taman Negara, you can’t skip Jungle Trekking as it’s the best activity here. The park has lots of paths and trails around the Wildlife Headquarters and Bukit Teresek is the major one for trekking. 

To reach the top of the peak takes nearly 30 – 40 minutes and the view of it is so magnificent that you’ll forget all the struggles you had during trekking. 

3. Real Inner Jungle Trekking

Real Inner Jungle Trekking is only for those who are physically fit and healthy. This one is the hardest and longest trekking distance that you need to go for. So do not participate if you’re not fit enough. 

I am sure adventure seekers would not miss this trekking and you need to go on nature trails, ups and downs, hills & caves, and crossing the rivers. 

There are many popular trails for inner jungle trekking including Kuala Teranggan, Chegar Anjing, Kepayang Besar Caves, Lata Berkoh, and Kumbang Hide. 

4. Visit Kampung Orang Asli (Aborigine Settlement)

In this modern world, it is fascinating to watch people who are still living their lives through hunting. Kampung Orang Asli , also known as Aborigine Settlement, is a group of nomadic tribes living in the Taman Negara. 

Here you’ll find two ethnicities of Orang Asli namely Batek and Semokberi and these tribes are far away from modernization. They are very kind and gentle folk with curly hair and dark skin. 

These folks are respectful and hospitable to all visitors who come here to meet them. They will even teach you how to use bamboo for hunting, blowpipes, and how to make fire. 

They speak their own language so to communicate with them you’ll be provided with a translator. If you want to take pictures of them ask for permission first. 

5. Cave Exploration

In Malaysia exploring nature can not be completed without exploring the limestone caves. And do not think that Taman Negara which is the largest rainforest in Malaysia does not give you the adventure of exploring caves. 

Taman Negara has many caves to explore Gua Telinga and Gua Kepayang Besar are the major two caves. Gua Telinga is located only 2.6 kilometres from the Wildlife Headquarters but it’s temporarily closed due to safety reasons.

To explore these caves you have to take some necessary equipment such as a caving Hamlet, a lamp, suitable clothes and shoes, a battery pack, etc. At first, you will be brief about your safety and then start your journey through the chamber by walking, crawling, and climbing.

All the caves are full of various types of bats, racer snakes, and many other insects. Be gentle with them otherwise, they may harm you. For a magnificent experience of cave exploration, spend a night in one of these caves and watch how beautiful it becomes at night. 

6. Gunung Tahan Climbing

Gunung Tahan Climbing is not for those who are weak-hearted and physically unfit. You can only choose to climb this trail if you’re both physically and mentally fit enough as Gunung Tahan is the highest peak in Peninsular Malaysia with a 2187-metre height. 

“Tahan” means endure and Gunung Tahan is the hardest and most challenging trekking trail in Taman Negara. There are two routes to Gunung Tahan that are open to the public for hiking. 

First one is Kuala Tahan – Gunung Tahan – Kuala. The distance of this route is nearly 53 kilometres from the Wildlife Headquarters in Kuala Tahan and takes around 7 days and 6 nights to complete.

The second one is Kuala Juram – Gunung Tahan – Kuala Juram. It has been open to the public since 1999 and is comparatively less challenging than the first one. Because the distance of this route is around 32 kilometres and takes only 4 days and 3 nights to complete. And that’s why this route is getting more popular among climbers. 

7. Rapid Shooting

You surely have experience getting wet at water rides in amusement parks. But those rides are artificial. How about a natural water ride?

Rapid Shooting is the activity in Taman Negara that will give you the same thrill as the water rides in amusement parks. Or maybe it’s more exciting and fun than any other ride as Rapid Shooting promises you to ride through seven rocky rapids.

The journey will be taken in a small wooden boat and the rapids are so rocky that you will get quite wet and shaken. The journey will start from Kuala Tahan to Kuala Terengganu and vice versa. You’ll be provided with a guide who will ensure your safety. You just have to follow the instructions and also put on your lifejacket throughout the journey. 

You are better off leaving your electronic devices and expensive stuff at the camp or in a dry bag, otherwise, it could get wet. 

8. Boat Cruise to Lata Berkoh & Kelah Fish Feeding

Rapid Shooting is a thrilling activity during which you clearly won’t take pictures if you don’t want to lose your camera. But there is another way to capture this beautiful flora and fauna while you’re in the water. And that is a Boat Cruise to Lata Berkoh . 

Lata Berkoh is one of this park’s jewels and a spectacular place for boat cruising. Most visitors take the boat cruise for photography as it can give you the most iconic pictures. 

Besides photography, you can also interact with freshwater fish as the journey will lead you through Lubuk Tenor, Kelah Sanctuary, and Sungai Tahan. These are the best places to watch Kelah or Red Mahseer which is the king of freshwater fish.

You can feed the fish and touch them with your bare hand. Trust me the feeling is so extraordinary. 

Apart from fish feeding, you can also catch fish in Taman Negara if you’re a good angler. In fact, with numerous waterways, Taman Negara is the best place for fishing. 

Though you cannot go fishing everywhere and there are certain rules that you must follow if you want to go fishing. Sungai Tembeling and Sungai Keniam are the permitted areas for fishing. 

From the departure point at Kuala Tahan jetty, you need 2.5 to 5 hours to reach the fishing spots. Here you can catch Kelah, Baung, Gohok, Lampam, Patin, Tenggalan, and many more. February to September is the most suitable months for fishing in Taman Negara. 

10. Visiting the animals

Taman Negara is a rainforest so whatever animals you see here are free and wild. So at any cost, you’re not allowed to hamper the privacy of these animals. That’s why the park authority has built some hides from where visitors can observe the animals.

There are many hides that are accessible from Kuala Tahan such as Tahan Hide, Blau Hide, Yong Hide, Tabing Hide, Kumbang Hide, and Cegar Anjing Hide. From these hides, you can observe animals like wild boar, reindeer, tapir, and so on.

To watch more wild animals, you have to trek deeper into the jungle and stay overnight in the hides. And don’t worry the hides are built in a safe position so that you would not get harmed by any wildlife. 

11. Bird Watching

Any rainforest in Malaysia is majestic for bird watching and Taman Negara is the largest rainforest in the country so you can imagine why this park is best for bird watching activities. Not only that, this forest houses more than 380 species of birds which you can not see in any other forest in Peninsular Malaysia. 

During the fruit season which is May to August, you’ll find birds like Rhinoceros Hornbills, Blue-winged Leafbirds, the Thick-billed Pigeon, Blue-eared Barbet, Asian Fairy bluebird, the Yellow-vented Flowerpecker, and Green Broadbill. 

Kuala Tahan and Kuala Terengganu are the main bird-watching areas. Apart from this, you can also spot the majestic Great Argus Pheasant along the trail to Teresek Hill and also the six species of pheasants. 

Tahan river and Lata Berkoh are also ideal for bird watching if you want to see birds like Masked Finfoot, Blue-banded, Rufous-collared Kingfishers, Stork-billed, and Blue-eared.

12. Four Steps WaterFall Explorations

Four Steps WaterFall is known as Malaysia’s most exquisite cascade because of its spectacular view. The waterfall has been created by one of the tributaries of Ulu Tahan and to reach there you have to trek through the Gunung Tahan trekking route.

The route is slightly detoured and quite challenging so if you’re stable enough, then a unique sight is waiting for you at the Four Steps Waterfall. It will take nearly 30 minutes to reach there via trekking. 

13. Night Walking Safaris

The park is undoubtedly mesmerising in the daylight. Can you imagine how it becomes when the sun goes down? The entire rainforest takes a magnificent look at night and the sound of all the nocturnal animals starts to emerge when dusk falls.

During this time, Night Walking Safaris around the park are the best activity to get a memorable experience of the night. But be careful you can attract wild animals with your torch in the dark, and try to be quiet unless you could scare them. Always keep a local guide with you and watch the natural nocturnal habitat of these animals. 

14. Camping in the rainforest 

To explore Taman Negara and enjoy all the activities of this park, it’s obvious that you have to stay here for 3 to 4 nights. And when you’ll do jungle trekking and cave exploring, you must camp in the rainforest.

Camping in the rainforest is really fun and exciting because you get to learn so much about nature and the source of its existence. At the same time, you’ll be encountered magnificent birds and creatures that you have never seen before.

Just make sure you have enough equipment for camping and a local guide for instructing you throughout your journey. 

Best time to visit

Taman Negara is a magnificent rainforest and in different seasons it looks different. You can visit the park anytime as it’s open for the public to visit 365 days a year. 

But the most suitable time is spring when nature takes an entirely new shape and look. At the same time, in the spring month which is between March to April , the park remains significantly less crowded.

Timings: Everyday 09:00 am to 05:30 pm

Admission fee: to enter the park, the fare is RM1.00 but you have to pay an extra RM5.00 for the camera and video-making. The cost per activity is RM160.00 per person. 

How to get there

Unlike before, Taman Negara national park is quite accessible in the present day. There are many transport systems available that connect Taman Negara to Kuala Lumpur such as buses , trains , cars , and taxis. 

From Kuala Lumpur, the distance of Taman Negara is 240 kilometres and it takes 4 to 8 hours (depending on transport and traffic) to reach there. 

Travelling by bus is the cheapest way to get to Taman Negara from Kuala Lumpur. But unfortunately, it’s not so convenient way as you will not get any direct bus from Kuala Lumpur to Taman Negara.

At first, you have to take a bus that will lead you to Jerantut. At Titiwangsa’s Parkeliling Bus Terminal, you will get a bus for Jerantut. Book your ticket from 12GoAsia to get the best deal. 

After that, you have to take another bus from the Jerantut Bus Terminal that will lead you to Kuala Tahan, the centre point of Taman Negara. If you don’t get a bus for Kuala Tahan, then you should take a bus for Kuala Tembeling port. Then take a ferry to get to Kuala Tahan. Tickets are available at 12GoAsia , make your purchase online. 

The whole journey will take approximately 4 to 6 hours and the cost starts from RM28.00.

The train is another cheapest way to get to Taman Negara but it’s a bit hustling and takes the longest time to reach. Currently, no direct train is available from Kuala Lumpur to Jerantut. So to reach Jerantut, you need a transfer to Gemas.

Firstly, take the ETS train from KL Sentral and get to Gemas, a town in Negeri Sembilan . The journey will take 2.5 hours and the ticket price starts from RM31.00. check train schedule and ticket price at 12GoAsia .

After arriving at Gemas Train Station, take an intercity train that will lead you to Jerantut. This journey will take 3 to 4 hours. For train schedule and ticket price click here .

From Jerantut, you have to take a bus to reach Taman Negara as I have described above. 

By Car or Taxi

A private car or taxi is the most convenient way to get to Taman Negara from Kuala Lumpur. It’s totally hustle-free and you don’t have to change your transportation as well. But a taxi ride is comparatively expensive.

If you’re going to Taman Negara by self-driving, you take the route from Kuala Lumpur City Center to Jerantut to Kuala Tahan. Use GPS technology with the latest mobile devices to get better navigation. 

Where to eat

To explore Taman Negara, you need to set camp inside the rainforest. So most of the time you have to prepare your food by yourself, especially during trekking and cave exploring. Because when you’re in the inner jungle trekking, you would not find eateries there and you need to survive on the stuff that you have brought with you.

Apart from this, the National Park has some restaurants where you can have breakfast, lunch, and dinner. 

Seri Mutiara Restaurant (Halal)

If you stay at the Mutiara Taman Negara resort, then Seri Mutiara Restaurant is the prime restaurant to have breakfast, lunch and dinner. They sell buffet breakfast and set meals for lunch and dinner.

In their buffet breakfast, you’ll get fried rice, fried noodles, sausage, potatoes, eggs, baked beans, and bread. For lunch and dinner, you will get more options of food items which you can select from their menu.

They never use non-halal ingredients to prepare food so Muslims can dine here freely. The only problem is all foods are quite expensive here.

Taman Negara Floating Restaurant

If Seri Mutiara Restaurant doesn’t fit your budget, you will always get a cheaper option. Taman Negara Floating Restaurant is an affordable restaurant that is located on the river.

Yes, it’s a river floating restaurant and you need to pay RM1 to get to the restaurant from the resort by boat. The restaurant serves simple but delicious food with a mesmerising view of the waterfront. And the price of the food is incredibly cheap.

Buloh On Taman Negara Pahang Kuala Tahan

Travel tips

From my personal experience in Taman Negara, I assume I should give some travel tips so that you can take care of certain facts and enjoy your exploration.

The rainforest is unknown to you, so don’t go anywhere without a local guide, and only a local guide can help you to get the best view of wildlife.  The rainforest has many mosquitoes and insects so it’s better to bring your insect repellent cream and wear full-sleeved clothes. During night safari, make sure you bring necessary equipment like a torch, stick, etc.  During waterfall hiking and rapid shooting, you can get wet, so keep some extra clothes with you.

What to Expect

Trekking in tropical rain forest is no like others jungle. Within 10 mins walk you will sweat a lot and environment is hot & humid. Normal temperature around 30 – 34c in the day time and night time could be 24-28c. Be prepare a small towel with you and bring some cookies & sweets.

Weather is unpredictable, it’s can be sudden heavy rain during your trek. At night sleep in the cave, might have some unexpected guest like slow loris, mouse deer, malayan civet cat, leopard cat and also recorded a group of elephants sleep together in the cave on year 2009.
