Steve Hackett Bringing Genesis’ ‘Foxtrot’ Tour to North America

Former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett announced North American tour dates for his Foxtrot at Fifty show.

He’ll perform 29 concerts, kicking off in Montreal on Oct. 3 and winding up in Los Angeles on Nov. 18. Along with a complete performance of Foxtrot , the shows will also feature a selection of “Hackett highlights.”

“ Foxtrot was a hybrid of a lot of different styles,” the guitarist recently told Ramzine of the 1972 album, the first Genesis LP to make the Top 20. “At the time, Genesis were a band pulling in a lot of different directions as we all had so many different influences. Tony Banks was into Vaughan Williams, Phil [Collins] was interested in big bands, [Peter] Gabriel was into soul music, [Mike] Rutherford was into folk and Led Zeppelin and I was into blues and baroque music.”

He added that “We were a young struggling band without much in the way of a clear sense of direction, but knowing we wanted to do something exceptional. And I think we pulled it off. Foxtrot was a terrific achievement for Genesis at the time. There’s not one weak track on the album, they all have their strong points and I’m looking forward to performing the whole album live.”

Steve Hackett Sets More Dates of His ‘Genesis Revisited’ Tour

Steve Hackett will be revisiting his stellar work with Genesis when he launches the North American leg of his “Genesis Revisited: Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights” tour in fall 2023. The concerts will be preceded by a tour throughout Europe this spring and summer, that begins April 19 in Paris. Tickets can be purchased here.

The show will feature the 1972 Genesis album, Foxtrot , performed in full, plus additional fan favorites. Long considered one of prog rock’s classic releases, the album featured such all-time great Genesis tracks as “Watcher of the Skies” and the epic “Supper’s Ready.”

Hackett joined Genesis in 1971 as the guitarist in the band’s classic line-up alongside Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins. Hackett’s intricate guitar work was a key element of Genesis’ albums from Nursery Cryme (1971) through Wind and Wuthering (1977) including the classic Selling England By the Pound .

After leaving Genesis at the end of 1977, Hackett’s solo career, which now spans more than 30 albums, has demonstrated his extraordinary versatility with both electric and acoustic guitar. Hackett, born Feb. 12, 1950, is renowned as both an immensely talented and innovative rock musician and a virtuoso classical guitarist and composer and this was recognized in 2010 when he was inducted with Genesis into the Rock & Hall of Fame. He has also worked alongside Steve Howe of YES in the supergroup GTR.

In recent years, he released Selling England By the Pound & Spectral Mornings: Live at Hammersmith , a live recording of his 2019 tour celebrating that Genesis classic together with the 40th anniversary of one of his most-loved solo albums. The lockdown also gave Hackett the opportunity to write and record two new studio albums, Under a Mediterranean Sky and Surrender of Silence .

Steve Hackett announces Foxtrot at Fifty North American tour

Former Genesis man Steve Hackett will undertake a lengthy North American tour to mark the 50th anniversary of the band's classic Foxtrot album

Steve Hackett onstage

Former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett has announced a US tour to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the band's 1972 album Foxtrot . The run of 29 Foxtrot at Fifty shows will kick off on October 3 at Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier in Montreal, QC, and wrap up six weeks later at the Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara, CA, on November 18.

“I’m thrilled to be bringing my ‘Genesis Revisited: Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights’ tour to the USA and Canada in the autumn," says Hackett, "and very much look forward to seeing you all then!”

Hackett played a run of 25 UK Foxtrot at Fifty dates in September and October 2022. In announcing those shows, he said, "We were a young, struggling band at that time. By the time we were doing Foxtrot the band was becoming more ambitious.

" Foxtrot is a must for fans of the early Genesis work. Fifty years ago? It doesn’t feel like those ideas are fifty years old because it was-genre defining, rather than following trends. It still sounds current, now.”

The North American shows are in addition to an extensive run of previously-announced European Foxtrot At 50 dates, which kick off on April 19 at La Seine Musicale in Paris, France. Full dates below - tickets are on sale now .

Steve Hackett – Genesis Revisited

Foxtrot at 50 + hackett highlights, fri, oct 13, 2023 | 8:00 pm.

Check out this recent CT POST INTERVIEW with Steve Hackett

Hot on the heels of his most successful solo tour ever, Steve Hackett  announced his  Steve Hackett Genesis Revisited – Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights tour. The tour marks the 50th anniversary of the legendary Genesis album Foxtrot which, in 1972, was pivotal in establishing the band as a major force in British rock.

Guitarist Steve Hackett joined Genesis in 1971, making his band debut on the Nursery Cryme album which enjoyed a greater commercial success in Europe than the UK. After extensive touring, the band were encouraged, by audience reactions, to further experiment with ever longer compositions and develop their ability to incorporate strong narratives. This, in turn, allowed frontman Peter Gabriel more opportunity to indulge in the theatrics which helped to raise the band’s profile.

Now, for 2023, Steve brings Foxtrot at Fifty to North America for a string of eagerly awaited dates following the huge selling UK 2022 tour.

“I think Foxtrot was a terrific achievement for Genesis at that time,” says Steve Hackett . “I think there is not one weak track on the album, they all have their strong points and I’m really looking forward to doing the whole album live.”

Steve Hackett: Genesis Revisited

Hot on the heels of his most successful solo tour ever, Steve Hackett announced his Steve Hackett Genesis Revisited - Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights tour in 2022.

“I think Foxtrot was a terrific achievement for Genesis at that time,” says Steve Hackett. “I think there is not one weak track on the album, they all have their strong points and I’m really looking forward to doing the whole album live.”

Steve Hackett, Birmingham Symphony Hall, 18/11/19.

I'll get the gripes out of the way first. Every time I see him, his guitar is too far down in the mix, as is Nad's voice. Is it too much to ask for Steve and his singer to be audible above the rest of the band? And please don't turn your lights on the audience unless they are top lights. The lights from the stage are quite literally blinding.

Anyway, apart from those two little niggles, the quality of the music was superb as usual. The new drummer - Craig Blundell - was completely different. They even gave him a drum solo at the end of Clocks, and if I closed my eyes I could have been listening to Carl Palmer or even Bill Bruford at one point. I did think the band missed Gary O'Toole's vocals though.

The first half was Spectral Mornings with a few tracks from At the Edge of Light. John Hackett joined them for a couple of tracks, and a real surprise was "The Red Flower of Tachai Blooms Everywhere", which is a Chinese-influenced track which I didn't think the band could pull off - but they did thanks to a flute duet with John and Rob Townsend.

After a short break, they played "Selling England" straight through, just as you'd hear it if you played the CD. The extended version of I Know what I Like was fantastic. Hats off to Nad for completely nailing "More Fool Me". I used to try and sing this when I was a folkie, and I had to do a simplified version on the guitar and some of the notes I couldn't reach even if I dropped it down a key or two. And The Battle of Epping Forest was really well done by them all.

For me - and this is a technical guitar thing - the highlight was just two notes in Steve's guitar solo in Firth of Fifth. I had no idea a guitar could play notes that high, which seemed to be the 5th or 6th harmonic of a note played halfway up the neck on the G string... When the place went silent after the applause for that song, a man in front of me shouted out "That was the best version ever!" and do you know, I tend to agree with him.

The bonus track, "Deja Vu" - well that was a complete triumph. Absolutely beautiful. On the way back I tried to think what album it could have fit into, and to be honest the only one I could have fit it into was... Voyage of the Acolyte or maybe even Spectral Mornings! Too beautiful for one of the Gabriel era Genesis albums, even though he wrote it.

Overall, I noticed that the band seemed to have been let off the leash a bit performance-wise, particularly Rob Townsend and Jonas Reingold.

And a teaser for you - he mentioned the Heart of England orchestra he toured with last year - and said they are working on something similar...

Well there you have it. I nearly killed myself getting there as I've hardly walked for 6 weeks following my op, but I'm so glad I made it. Those of you going, you are in for a real treat.

Dear Steve and amazing band:

Michael and I are overwhelmed by this Berkeley , CA concert! We LOVE LOVE LOVE your band and everyone plays an important part in the music! We have loved Steve Hackett since he was with Genesis ...and we have always thought his interpretation of the music was the MOST important! Love the "older" UTUBE concerts where Gabe was a "babe" in arms and Hackett a virtuoso of the guitar! Nad is the most amazing performer and instills a part that only "GABE" could do! There are many rock guitar styles from the early 60's to 70's that we admire: Jimmy Page, Pete Townsend, David Gilmore, Of Course J. Hendrix ,Keith Richards and then the number one man : STEVE HACKETT! We could listen, watch, enjoy this music until our 100's. I only hope that my children, grandchildren enjoy the most Progressive Rock in history by listening to Steve Hackett's band and all the fantastic music that NO ONE DOES today! PLEASE come back to Berkeley, CA theater soon! Love Mr. Wind, Roger, Gary, and any of he amazing bass guitar players you choose to tour .....Love, Love, Love, I could have listened for 4 days non stop! We Love you Steve Hackett, you are the God's gift to the Universe! See you soon and safe travels! Lori D. and Michael K.

My wife and I did the pre show meet and greet, like we did last year in Chicago. You can tell I'm a fan, have been since 1975.

The Tivoli was a great, intimate venue for such a show. The official song run list looks good and after dinner, we head for the show. Steve Hackett's guitar playing is fantastic, note perfect all night during 2.5 hours of intense playing. The crowd are happy with this minute of solo Hackett and best of Genesis, and a standing ovation greets the band not only at the end but after every Genesis back catalogue 'event'. The Brisbane crowd welcome Steve as a long lost son and everyone cheers during the "Suppers Ready' line - 'its been a long long time, hasn't it?'.

So, well worth the trip from Melbourne to Brisbane, and well worth the chance to consume a musical feast of what represents ground breaking music of the 70's. Steve Hackett is a star of the Gibson guitar, a true gentleman who is true to his ideals. Finally, nice touch Steve on making everyone feel welcome by talking about your families refugee history. What a star.

Can he hack it? I think so! Steve Hackett, ladies and gentlemen. One of the most influential guitarists of the seventies, being looked up to by Eddie Van Halen, Alex Lifeson, Brian May and Steve Rothery. It’s no wonder that this guitarist was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis in 2010.

Being in Genesis however, didn’t hinder the fact that this guitarist had time to record his own albums and put them out there only for them to chart his first six making the top 40. Tonight is in celebration of some of his most successful works. Opening with the distinct sound of “Every Day”, this audience are full of nothing but alcohol and praise as they sing along, loud and clear. “Sentimental Institution” is another song that keeps this gathering on their toes, enjoying the show in front of them. There is absolutely no doubt that Hackett is a good singer, but when he launches into his guitar solos, the audience go absolutely wild for it.

Okay But No Cigar

Sorry Steve but it didn’t work with the Orchestra and it’s your fault because you and the band didn’t allow them to breathe; you played your normal band set without enough space left for the orchestra, consequently Nad Sylva's vocals were drowned out every time the orchestra came in. What’s the point of doing Suppers Ready or Musical box if you can’t hear the lyrics? What should have been a magical re-interpretation of Genesis back catalogue and Your Songs with an orchestra, turned into a fight to be heard. It probably would have been better if you dispensed with the band apart from Sylva and the drummer for this one concert and worked with the orchestra to re-interpret the parts played by the rest. It was still a great night out despite the above but the night could have been so much better.

Standout song :Serpintine song

Most disapointing song : Suppers Ready, due to what I outlined above.

Very enjoyable show. This was my fourth time seeing Steve Hackett. I will definitely see him again the next time he is in town. I love watching and listening to him play electric guitar.

The set list was a good mix of new and old material. He played the "Selling England By The Pound" album in its entirety, but it was wonderful that he immediately followed it with a song which was recorded at the time of that album but never included on it. It was good that he was also celebrating the 40th anniversary of his "Spectral Mornings" album. The first set started with a great version of "Every Day" and ended with "Clocks" about 55 minutes later. After a twenty minute break, they played the second set which ran for an hour and a half.

The sound quality and the lighting were excellent. His band are great musicians. It was a sold out crowd in a lovely old theater which just made the evening even more enjoyable.

An amazing show. Steve and the band seem to be getting better every year. His playing was phenomenal, and even with two new band members, the band was tight and played perfectly. The show starts with some great songs off the new album, and then a celebration of Spectral Mornings. After the intermission it's Selling England by the Pound end to end and then some tunes off Trick of the Tail to close.

I really appreciate how much the band loves to perform and how much the audience loves the show. There were multiple standing ovations and Steve in particular seemed to be touched by the response. He spoke a lot, telling some stories behind the songs. It was a great connection and what a concert should be.

I highly recommend the show. If you even just like (vs love) prog rock, or early Genesis you just have to see this show. It will give you a whole new appreciation for how awesome this music is.

I was at Shepherds Bush last night and I thought I must leave a review to say what a great night it was.

Great track list, really good balance between old and new. Great to hear Get ‘Em Out By Friday and After The Ordeal which I haven’t heard live for many a year. I also though it very thoughtful and unselfish of him to play things like Cinema Show where keyboards feature heavily and is so appreciated by the audience.

Sound quality and balance was also excellent, much better that last year at Hammersmith which wasn’t up to their usual standard I thought.

To do a tour the size of the one he's doing and to play for nearly 3 hours is amazing.

Anyway one of the best concerts I’ve seen in a long while – and from the long standing ovation at the end I think my feelings are shared

Well done all round!

Been 50 yrs and Steve had clearly used the gap in our get togethers to practice. I've heard lots of Steve's post-Genesis music and liked it all a lot. The gig, however, just blew me away. The 2nd half reworking of a seminal Genesis work, Selling England by The Pound was absolutely amazing. Steve's band are exceptional and if anything I enjoyed their version to the original. The first half mixture of recent and older works were equally well presented. The audience were entranced by all the skills on show and Steve's stories. I'd recommend this tour and any others they may undertake. A full house showed their appreciation with a well deserved and loud and long standing ovation. The two bonus encore gift were equally brilliant. And then another ovation. Fantastic. Thanks Steve and gang.

Superb show.

Saw the band last year which was also good but this surpassed it.

The show has really evolved with better orchestration and much fuller production all round.

New drummer Gary O'Toole is terric as are Messrs Beggs, Silver, King, Alexander. While Steve continues in top form.

The first half comprised materiL crom Steves solo career inuding tracks from the new album. The new stuff sounding particularly fine.

The 2nd half was Genesis revisited with all the classic Hackett set pieces. Wind and wuthering best buts, Firth of Fifth and a classic Musical Box.

See tgis show if you get the chance.

Great night.

Steve Hackett joined Genesis in 1971 and made his band debut on the Nursery Cryme album, which gained greater commercial success in Europe than in the UK. Speaking about the upcoming tour, Steve Hackett said, “I think Foxtrot was a terrific achievement for Genesis at that time. Former GENESIS lead guitarist STEVE HACKETT is bringing his GENESIS REVISITED tour to Taft Theatre in Cincinnati, OH on October 31 where he and an all-star band will be performing the critically acclaimed album FOXTROT in its entirety along with selections from his solo career.

Hot on the heels of his most successful solo tour ever, Steve Hackett announces his Steve Hackett Genesis Revisited - Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights tour for 2022/2023. The tour marks the 50th anniversary of the legendary Genesis album Foxtrot which, in 1972, was pivotal in establishing the band as a major force in British rock.

The Steve Hackett Genesis Revisited - Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights tour also promises more Genesis favorites and highlights from Hackett's extensive solo catalogue.

This, in turn, allowed frontman Peter Gabriel more opportunity to indulge in the theatrics which helped to raise the band's profile.

"I think Foxtrot was a terrific achievement for Genesis at that time," says Steve Hackett. "I think there is not one weak track on the album, they all have their strong points and I'm really looking forward to doing the whole album live."

Foxtrot was critically acclaimed and became the first Genesis album to make the UK album charts. The first track, the sci-fi influenced Watcher of the Skies became a fan favorite and perennial live set opener while Get 'Em Out By Friday was a cutting slice of social comment about concrete tower blocks replacing aging slums, driven not by concern for communities but by the greed of developers.

Hackett was the lead writer of Can-Utility and the Coastliners , featuring some particularly strong musical ideas, and also contributed his classically-inspired solo piece Horizons. "The original version was a rough mix but there was something about it. A rough monitor mix can have things that something more considered won't necessarily possess. I liked the sound of the rough mix, so we went with that."

The album's highlight was the 23-minute epic Supper's Ready which remains a concert favorite and featured on Hackett's recent Seconds Out tour. " 'Supper's Ready' was a sojourn, an odyssey and something that goes down very, very well with audiences now." Hackett adds. "As part of 'Second's Out' I've been playing the whole of that again, it really has stood the test of time. "

" We were a young, struggling band at that time. By the time we were doing 'Foxtrot', the band was becoming more ambitious. 'Foxtrot' is a must for fans of the early Genesis work. Fifty years ago? It doesn't feel like those ideas are fifty years old because it was-genre defining, rather than following trends. It still sounds current, now. "

Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett rushed to hospital moments before his concert

tour 2023 steve hackett

The Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix was filled with fans awaiting the arrival of Genesis' Steve Hackett on Saturday, all while the guitarist was being rushed to the hospital from backstage.

Hackett shared a photo of himself in a hospital room on Facebook Sunday to accompany a post about what happened.

"I’m so sorry for the scare," he wrote.

"I’d hoped to power through the Phoenix show but I had a bronchial infection and a last-minute adverse reaction to medication. Consequently, the medics took me to hospital. I am now recovering and glad to be feeling okay. I was very sad to miss the show and I will return to play in Phoenix as soon as possible. My thanks to you all for your understanding and support."

The post was signed, "With warmest wishes, Steve."

The tour was part nostalgia, part new material

The concert was part of a tour that features Hackett revisiting “Foxtrot,” one of several classic albums he made with Genesis, while also showcasing the highlights of “The Circus and the Nightwhale,” a solo album he released in February.

In an exclusive interview with The Republic , Hackett talked about the tour.

“I’m keeping the museum doors open in the revisited sense of Genesis,” he says, “but also doing new stuff to keep it vital so I don't entirely pension myself off into a glorious past with all those lovely exhibits, beautiful though they are, but they are of a certain time-warp value.”

Kate Beckinsale shares photos from the hospital, thanks 'incredible' mom for her support

Will refunds be issued for the show?

The tour was brought to Phoenix by Danny Zelisko Presents.

DZP rep Kathy “Koz” Perschke said they are attempting to reschedule the performance, noting that Hackett has been released from the hospital. "If it doesn't get rescheduled, obviously, people will be refunded their money. It will go right to the credit card the ticket was purchased on."

PHOENIX, Arizona — former lead guitarist for Genesis is recovering after he had an adverse reaction to medication to treat bronchitis, forcing him to cancel a concert moments before it was to begin.

Steve Hackett wrote in a post on Facebook that he had a “last-minute adverse reaction” to the medication before Saturday’s show at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

“I’m so sorry for the scare,” Hackett writes. “I’d hoped to power through the Phoenix show but I had a bronchial infection and a last-minute adverse reaction to medication. Consequently, the medics took me to hospital.

“I am now recovering and glad to be feeling okay. I was very sad to miss the show and I will return to play in Phoenix as soon as possible. My thanks to you all for your understanding and support.”

A spokesperson tells the Los Angeles Times that Hackett intends to reschedule the Phoenix show.

On Tuesday, Hackett again posted on Facebook saying “Hello Mexico! All clear and hear I come!” He was scheduled to play Wednesday night in Guadalajara, Mexico, and Friday in Mexico City. USA Today reports the tour focuses on “Foxtrot,” an album he recorded with Genesis during the 1970s, and on “The Circus and the Nightwhale,” a solo album he released in February.

Hackett was with Genesis from 1971 to 1977 with vocalist Peter Gabriel, keyboardist Tony Banks, bassist Mike Rutherford and drummer Phil Collins, and played on six studio albums. Hackett left the band in October 1977, saying he “needed autonomy.”

Steve Hackett ‘Glad to Be Feeling OK’ After Hospitalization

F ormer Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett assured fans he’s OK after being rushed to the hospital ahead of his scheduled performance in Phoenix on Saturday.

The 74-year-old musician was set to play at the Celebrity Theatre as part of his ongoing Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights tour , which features the pivotal 1972 Genesis album in its entirety. Promoter Danny Zelisko Presents is now working to reschedule the show.

Hackett offered a status update on Sunday, posting a note on Facebook along with a photo of himself in the hospital, which you can see below. “Hello everyone, I’m so sorry for the scare,” he said. “I’d hoped to power through the Phoenix show, but I had a bronchial infection and a last-minute adverse reaction to medication. Consequently, the medics took me to hospital. I am now recovering and glad to be feeling OK. I was very sad to miss the show and I will return to play in Phoenix as soon as possible. My thanks to you all for your understanding and support. With warmest wishes, Steve.”

Steve Hackett Reflects on Genesis’ ‘Foxtrot’

Hackett has kept busy with a steady stream of solo albums in recent years, most recently the February release of The Circus and the Nightwhale . At the same time, he’s carved out time to revisit his tenure in Genesis, which lasted from 1971 to 1977. “I’m keeping the museum doors open in the revisited sense of Genesis,” he recently told The Arizona Republic , “but also doing new stuff to keep it vital so I don’t entirely pension myself off into a glorious past with all those lovely exhibits — beautiful though they are, but they are of a certain time-warp value.”

Foxtrot holds the distinction of being the first Genesis album to chart in their native United Kingdom. “We were a young struggling band without much in the way of a clear sense of direction, but knowing we wanted to do something exceptional,” Hackett told Ramzine in 2022. “And I think we pulled it off. Foxtrot was a terrific achievement for Genesis at the time. There’s not one weak track on the album, they all have their strong points and I’m looking forward to performing the whole album live.”

Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett rushed to Phoenix hospital as his concert was about to start

tour 2023 steve hackett

The Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix was filled with fans awaiting the arrival of Steve Hackett on Saturday, April 13, when the Genesis guitarist was rushed to the hospital from backstage.

Hackett shared a photo of himself in a hospital room on Facebook Sunday afternoon to accompany a post about what happened.

Steve Hackett shares update while recovering in Phoenix

On Thursday, April 18, Hackett shared a blog called "Healing in the Heat" on social media updating fans on his condition.

"I'm really sorry I was not able to play the Phoenix show," he wrote.

"It was too dangerous for me to play with my bad reaction to meds for a bronchial infection and the medics had to rush me to the Valleywise Health Medical Center. Promotor Danny Zelisko is already making plans to enable me to play in Phoenix as soon as possible."

He loves playing "sunny Arizona," Hackett continued. "And the Tucson show was such a joy for us all with a fantastic crowd response!"

The blog went on to share the details of his time at Valleywise Health Medical Center.

"I was in hospital until the following evening and in and out of there for the next two days, while also continuing my recovery with Jo (his manager/wife) and our pals Leigh and Franck in their desert home near Phoenix," Hackett wrote.

"They were both amazing and their support was totally invaluable."

Hackett returned to the stage on Wednesday, April 17, in Guadalajara.

The tour is part nostalgia, part new material

When will the concert be rescheduled?

The tour was brought to Phoenix by Danny Zelisko Presents.

Zelisko says "Steve Hackett and the band will return to Phoenix in 2025. We are sorry the show in Phoenix can’t be made up any sooner."

Refunds will be issued for Steve Hackett in Phoenix

In the meantime, ticketholders' credit cards will be reimbursed for the tickets and fees through  celebritytheatre.com .

Zelisko adds, "We will send you a notice when we get a new date so that you can have first crack at the tickets for the new show. We are very, very sad and sorry for the trouble caused, which couldn’t be helped due to medical reasons."

If you purchased through a third party outlet, you will need to reach out to them to arrange a refund.
