Preparing for your Trip

A passport is required for overseas travel. It is recommended to make a copy of your passport and put it in a separate place. Carry your passport - do not pack it in your checked luggage. You must present it to the Customs and Border Protection officer upon arrival in the United States.

Find out if you need to get a visa. United States citizens don’t need a U.S. visa for travel, but when planning travel abroad may need a visa issued by the embassy of the country they wish to visit. If you have a visa, we recommend you make a copy and put it in a separate place. Carry your visa with you — do not pack it in your checked luggage.

Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP ) provide modified screening for pre-approved members, improve security by being more efficient during screenings at ports of entry.

Learn about the types of identification that are required for travel in the Western Hemisphere (Canada, Mexico, Caribbean, Central and South America). There are six types of acceptable documents for crossing US borders.

All children, including infants, must have their own passport or Trusted Traveler Program document for U.S. entry. Carry documents for traveling with minor children.

• If you are escorting a minor child without the parents, have a letter from both parents indicating that you have permission to travel with the minor.
• If the child is accompanied by only one parent, the parent should have a note from the child's other parent. For example, "I acknowledge that my wife/ husband is traveling out of the country with my son/ daughter. He/She/ has my permission to do so."
• If a single parent has sole custody, a copy of the court custody document can replace a letter from the other parent.

If bringing a dog, have a health certificate and proof of rabies vaccinations from a veterinarian in your country of residence. Prior to your trip, check with your airline for its rules on transporting animals – many airlines require a health certificate.

Returning Home

Find out what is prohibited or restricted before you pack for your trip. Products that would harm community health, public safety and domestic plant and animal life are restricted from entering the United States and are subject to seizure by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency .

Other considerations for packing:

• Carry only medication needed for the trip in its original container. Do not pack it.
• Carry only the jewelry needed for the trip. Do not pack it.

Navigating Passenger Processing

When planning connecting flights to or from the United States, allow at least two hours between flights. Allow time for CBP processing that must be completed at your first port of entry.

If entering the United States by air or sea, you will receive en route a CBP Declaration Form 6059B and, if you are not from a Visa Waiver Program country, a CBP Form I-94 Arrival/Departure Record . Complete all sections of the forms.

Review the CBP Inspection Process before your travel. Listed below are general steps for the inspection process.

• On your U.S. arrival, go to the primary CBP passport control area. The CBP officer will ask to see all of your travel documents and the completed CBP forms. The officer may refer you for a secondary screening.
• Proceed to baggage claim to pick up luggage.
• Go to the CBP customs inspection checkpoint and show your declaration to the CBP officer, who may examine your bags and refer you for a secondary inspection.
• Pay duty, if applicable.

Hvar Island, Croatia

Hvar Island is located in the Adriatic Sea, off the coast of Croatia, and boasts a stunning coastline with crystal-clear waters and gorgeous beaches . It is a fantastic destination for an outdoor family vacation, with plenty of adventurous activities for all ages to enjoy and you can easily spend 5 or even 7 days there.

Hvar’s main attractions are without a doubt the wonderful beaches and secluded coves , each with its unique character and atmosphere, make sure to add a couple to your Hvar itinerary .

Some of the best family-friendly beaches include Dubovica Beach, Mlini Beach, and Pokonji Dol Beach. These beaches have shallow waters and plenty of shade , making them perfect for young children to play safely. Jagodna Beach is the only sandy beach on the island and is fantastic for kids as well, but a little bit further from Hvar town.

Another must-do activity in Hvar is taking a boat trip to the Pakleni Islands . You can rent a boat or kayaks or book a guided tour to explore this stunning archipelago where you can enjoy swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing .

Another popular boat trip is to the Blue Cave , however, this one isn’t suited for young children who might get seasick.

While in Hvar make sure to climb up the Spanjola Fortress , which offers stunning views of the town and surrounding islands.

Cycling is also a popular activity on Hvar Island. The Stari Grad Plains are a great cycling destination for families, as they are flat and easy to navigate. The plains are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a must-visit on Hvar.

The best time for a family vacation on Hvar Island is during the summer months, from June to September, when the sea is warm and the days are long and sunny.

Amfora Hvar Grand Beach Resort is the perfect hotel for families with young children. This resort is located on the waterfront, just a few minutes walk from the center of Hvar Town, and offers spacious family rooms, a large swimming pool, a kids’ club, and a small beach right in front of it.

Camino de Santiago, Spain

You have probably heard of Camino de Santiago in Spain. After all, it is one of the most famous pilgrimage and hiking routes in Europe and the world. 

Camino de Santiago is a net of trails across Spain and Europe. Some Camino trails are 500+ miles (800+ km) long. 

However, you don’t need to hike the entire route to get your Compostela completion certificate. Some Camino de Santiago hikers walk only the last 62 mi (100 km) of the Camino, a prerequisite for getting a Compostela.

The most popular Camino trail is the French Way which starts in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in France and ends in Santiago in Spain. The entire French Way is 483 mi (777 km) long. The last 100 km of the French Way starts in a town in Galicia called Sarria .

From Sarria, you need only five days to reach Santiago. This 5-day hike is one of the most walked parts of the Camino. Among those hikers are quite often families with kids . They are families who like spending active vacations and being in nature together. But also parents who wish to teach their kids about effort, perseverance, modesty, and purpose.

Camino hikers are people from all walks of life. They sleep in pilgrimage hostels and share hostel amenities with other pilgrims . Camino hikers often share their life stories, learn about each other, and make a ‘Camino community’ on the trail. 

If you like moderate hikes, nature, and meaningful journeys , prepare a  Camino de Santiago packing list  for your kids and yourself and hike from Sarria to Santiago . This 5-day hike might teach your kids valuable life lessons. At the end of the Camino, reward your kids and yourself and book a room in the lovely Hotel Atalaia B&B in Santiago de Compostela. 

Santiago de Compostela Airport (SCQ) is the nearest airport to Sarria. Buses run from Santiago to Sarria daily. A bus ride from Santiago to Sarria takes about 2 hours.  

June and September are the best months to hike the French Way of Camino de Santiago.

Families looking for adventure, especially those that don’t mind the cold, need to put Iceland on their bucket list! The Land of Ice and Fire is home to many geological wonders that make this island nation a playground for adventure travelers . You will want to spend at least  5 days in Iceland  exploring black sand beaches, natural hot springs, thundering waterfalls, epic rock canyons , and the otherworldly landscape of Iceland. 

Even young children can enjoy an amphibian boat tour between the icebergs in the Jökulsárlón Lagoon, a walk through a lava tunnel (minimum age is three), or a super jeep tour through Thor’s Valley.

However, it is better to wait until your kids are a little older if you want to enjoy some more thrilling adventures such as a glacier hike (minimum age 10), ATV tour (minimum age 8), snowmobiling on a glacier (minimum age 8), riding on a white water jet boat (minimum age 8), or exploring ice caves in the winter (minimum age 7). 

Truly adventurous teens can even try ice climbing (minimum age 14), hiking up a volcano (minimum age 16), or mountaineering (minimum age 16.) Age eleven is a sweet spot for many soft adventures because they are old enough to participate but young enough to still qualify for child discounts.

Finding family-sized rooms in Iceland can be a challenge, but in addition to the many vacation rental cabins available , there are a handful of hotels in Reykjavik that will fit a family into one room to save money.

The Reykjavik Marina by Berjaya Iceland Hotels is a recently renovated landmark in a prime location near the Old Harbour. This hotel offers a “Studio 6” family room , which fits up to six people with double bed bunk beds, plus a pull-out sofa.

Algarve Region, Portugal

The sun shines over 300 days in Portugal every year. You can almost guarantee that you will have plenty of sunny days outside. The best time to visit the Algarve is in the fall and spring when the tourist season is a bit slower than in the summer. 

Besides lounging at the beautiful beaches, there are plenty of hikes in the Algarve that are family-friendly .

One of the most popular hikes is the Ponta da Piedade hike in Lagos. Here you can walk along the boardwalk and seaside cliffs with your family starting at Praia do Barranco and ending at Paria Canavail Beach. This is the iconic hike with the heart cliffs out in the water. Without stopping to take in the sites, this out-and-back trail takes about 30 minutes. 

When looking for where to stay in the Algarve a popular choice is Faro . It is the capital city of the Algarve and has an airport with local transportation that is good enough to get you around town.

For somewhere to stay try the Hotel Quinta do Lago . It is inside the Ria Formosa Natural Park and is a family-friendly hotel. When staying here guests are within walking distance of a private beach and can explore the Ria Formosa Natural Park at their leisure.

Isle of Lewis, Scotland

The Isle of Lewis is the largest island in the Outer Hebrides, a group of islands north of mainland Scotland. The island has fantastic beaches and scenery and is perfect for families who enjoy the outdoors.

Some of the best beaches are around Uig and at the very northern tip of the island close to the Butt of Lewis Lighthouse . It is possible to swim at many of the beaches as long as you can brave the cold water.

Around Uig, there are also several good walks in the Uig mountains. The terrain can be challenging and the walks long so most are only suitable for older children . For the younger ones check out some of the play areas such as Eoropie Dune Park close to the lighthouse.

Seals can often be seen around the Butt of Lewis lighthouse or take a boat trip to the Shiants islands where you are guaranteed to see seals . During May and June, you can also see puffins .  

Lewis is accessible by ferry or a domestic flight from Inverness or Glasgow . The fact that it is time-consuming to get there is part of what makes it so special since the islands see a lot fewer visitors than the rest of Scotland. The best time to visit is from April to October.

Self-catering cottages are the most popular places to stay. Most are only available to rent for a minimum of 7 nights and book out well in advance so make sure you plan ahead. The best locations to rent a cottage are either around Uig , staying at a cottage such as Airebroc House , or in Stornoway, staying at 35 Newvalley .

Peak District, England

Britain’s first national park, the Peak District is one of the best places in the UK for an epic adventurous holiday with family. There are plenty of kid-friendly  things to do in the Peak District  to make you fall in love with the picturesque English countryside.

It is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts having many trails suitable for all abilities . The pretty village of Castleton sits at the head of Hope Valley in the Peak District. It is a great base to explore the nearby caves and taverns .

Also, Mam Tor – one of the popular walks in the Peak District, starts from here. The circular trail is absolutely family-friendly and takes in one of the Peak District’s most iconic views.

History lovers would enjoy a visit to the magnificent Chatsworth House . Once here, you can explore the grand Painted Hall, historic State Rooms, the Sculpture Gallery of the Cavendish family, and the sprawling garden featuring various hiking trails.

Just a few minutes’ drive from the Chatsworth House is the cozy town of Bakewell . Located on the banks of the River Wye, Bakewell is famous for inventing the delicious dessert, Bakewell Pudding. The popular Monsal Trail starts from there. The traffic-free, gentle path runs along the former Midland Railway line and provides breathtaking views of the surrounding area.

The Little Mill Inn is a great choice for family-friendly accommodation in the Peak District. The nearest airport to the park is Manchester Airport which is around 18.4 miles away. Also, the East Midlands Airport and Birmingham Airport are not too far from here. Driving is the best way to get around. But there is public transport too.

Malaga, Spain

One of the best outdoor vacation spots for families is the coastal city of Malaga in southern Spain. Besides being an obvious beach destination in summer – and even far into October, there are so many fun outdoor activities to do with kids of all ages.

Go snorkeling in Nerja and explore the beautiful river walk of Rio Chillar or its lesser-known brother Rio Higueron where you will walk through the canyon walls in the water as you come across waterfalls and swimming holes.

While the hikes are long, they are popular family hikes as you can turn around whenever you want and even younger kids enjoy them.

The older kids might find it fun to go canyoning in Rio Verde in Ótivar .

There are also a wealth of beautiful white villages near Malaga that are set in the middle of nature and offer wonderful hiking opportunities.

One of the lesser known is Parauta , hidden in the heart of Valle Genal where you can take the little ones on a 2-kilometer trail in “ Bosque Encantado ”, which is translated into the magical forest. The path is dotted with fairytale figures and statues, wood carvings, and even a colorful wooden house where the kids can play inside. There is also a picnic area so you can bring lunch and make a day out of it.

A great family-friendly place to stay in Malaga is Vincci Málaga , right on the beachfront.

Dolomites, Italy

In the winter, there are 1200 kilometers of ski slopes , over 450 lifts, and plenty of kid-friendly snow activities like skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, sledding, and playing in snow parks (snow slides, trampolines, and more).  The area also hosts Italy’s most picturesque Christmas markets and holiday celebrations. 

In the summer, in-the-know Italian and international families flock to the area for incredible hiking (for all levels), cycling, rock climbing , exploring mountain villages, visiting the open-air WW1 museums, and of course, checking out Ötzi the Ice Man in Bolzano.

Dining is also family-friendly throughout the region, with a variety of foods available, from both Italian (pizza and pasta) and Austrian ( canederli  dumplings,  schnitzel,  and apple strudel) cuisines.  Plus, what kid doesn’t love a hot chocolate in the winter or a refreshing  sciwasser  (sparkling raspberry & lemon drink) in the summer?

The Dolomites are best reached by car , although you  can  visit with public transport (the bus system is excellent). The easiest entry points are from Bolzano and Venice, both of which are easily reached by train (and the latter, also by plane).

Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland

A great outdoor adventure for families is to take a road trip along the Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland . This 2500km driving route travels along the West Coast of Ireland from Malin Head in County Donegal to the Old Head of Kinsale in County Cork and journeys through some of Ireland’s most stunning landscapes .

You can road trip this route with kids of any age but kids above the age of 6 will enjoy it the most, especially if you pick them up one of the Wild Atlantic Way passport books to get stamped along the way at the many points of interest and markers.

The Wild Atlantic Way passes no less than five of the National Parks in Ireland including the lunar-like landscape of the Burren and the wild Connemara National Park . See if you can spot some of the Connemara ponies that live in the national park.

As it is a coastal driving route, there are some amazing beaches to visit along the way , with some of them ideal for surfing if it’s not too cold and windy. A beach not to miss is Keem Bay on Achill Island (recently featured in the film ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’.)

And we cannot forget cliffs, such as the Slieve League Cliffs and the famous Cliffs of Moher .

You could enjoy a 7-day Wild Atlantic Way itinerary that includes exploring some of Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coast , along which you can see the amazing Giant’s Causeway .

The best time to visit is between April and September when the weather is a bit more inviting. The West of Ireland can be a wild and uninviting part of the Emerald Isle when it is wet and miserable.

Essaouira, Morocco

Morocco is a fantastic destination for adventurous families , camping in the Sahara, trekking through the Atlas Mountains, getting lost in medinas. But if there was one destination to base yourselves for a week or so, it has to be Essaouira.

Perched on the Atlantic coast, a three-hour drive from Marrakech, Essaouira is perfect for kids with its traffic-free medina, snack stalls conveniently dotted around, and long stretch of sandy beach. It’s far more relaxed than Marrakech, and even pram friendly if you’re traveling with very young kids.

There are so many things to do in Essaouira, but an absolute must for kids age 5+ is surfing! Enroll them in a one-off lesson or perhaps sign them up for a week-long course . Older kids (age 13+) may want to try kite-surfing (Essaouira is quite the kite-surfing capital due to the high winds off the Atlantic).

There are limited direct flights to Essaouira from the UK and France. Otherwise, take a flight to Marrakech and then a transfer to Essaouira. Make note of when Ramadan is as many businesses close or have reduced hours. July and August are also best avoided as Essaouira is extremely busy with domestic tourists fleeing to the coast to escape the high inland temperatures, and it is also the Moroccan school holidays.

With regards to accommodation, if you want to embrace Moroccan culture and live like a local, there’s a range of wonderful vacation rentals in the heart of the medina . Renting a house for your stay means that all the kids can have their own bedrooms and there is a kitchen for self-catering (kids are always hungry at odd times, right?).

For more convenience and comfort, look at a hotel such as Hôtel Le Médina Essaouira Thalassa Sea & Spa , which is just outside the medina and across from the beach. 

South Africa

Jordan is an outdoor destination simply like no other. From unique desert-scapes to ancient cities, hiking through wadis and snorkeling in the Red Sea , it is a true adventure playground vacation spot for families.

The best place to visit in Jordan, though, for outdoor adventures is the Wadi Rum Desert . The stunning red sand dunes and incredibly other-worldly landscapes are home to the legends of Lawrence of Arabia. You can enjoy sandboarding through to rock climbing within the protected desert reserve, but the highlight is camping overnight in the Wadi Rum desert . Sleeping in a traditional Bedouin tent or glamping in luxurious bubble tents are unforgettable family experiences.

The temperature in Jordan varies across the seasons, with southern Jordan staying relatively mild year-round, whilst Amman and the north can even see snow in winter. Like much of the Middle East, summers are very hot. For the perfect happy medium, Jordan is a great place to visit during spring and autumn.

Jordan is an easy country to road trip around, either self-drive or hiring a driver . We’d suggest overnight stays at least at the Dead Sea, Petra, and Wadi Rum to get a true flavor of the country. Most international flights will come in and out of Amman International Airport.

Bali, Indonesia

Bali is the ultimate adventure destination and has been becoming more and more popular among families. The island is developing fast and is now the perfect place to visit for families with kids of all ages .

A fun activity is to spend the day at the beach , or even go for a walk during sunset when there are always kids playing on the beach. If you have older children, you can get them surf lessons, which is suitable for kids as young as 6. Snorkeling is another fun activity and the perfect way to introduce the little ones to the ocean in a safe way.

Make sure to visit a couple of waterfalls as well , like the gorgeous Gembleng Waterfall  or hike to Munduk Waterfall.

Once you’ve had enough of the coast, head north to Ubud , where you can visit the Monkey Forest , which is a great alternative to going to a zoo. The monkeys here roam free and you can see hundreds of them in their natural habitat . This is an unforgettable activity and after you’ve spent a few hours here, you can head to Ubud Market where you’ll be able to buy some souvenirs and have a delicious local lunch.

Make sure to visit Bali during the high season from June to September for the best chance of sunny and dry weather.

Meghalaya, India

Meghalaya literally translates into the abode of clouds. With its gorgeous valleys and green cliffs , this beautiful state in northeastern India is an o ffbeat destination that offers a variety of outdoor experiences for families. What makes these experiences unique are the places themselves – some adrift with folklore while others can only be found in this state.

One of the best things to do here is to hike up to the unique living root bridges that the locals create by weaving together the roots of rubber trees. With younger kids, below 10 years old, you can head to the living root bridge in Mawlynnong – while with older ones, you can hike to the double-decker living root bridge .

Waterfall hopping is yet another thing that you can indulge in with your family, Meghalaya is home to several stunning waterfalls such as the Nohkalikai Falls, Seven Sisters Falls, and Elephant Falls . The scenic surroundings will be even more enchanting when you hear the folklore attached to each of these waterfalls.

This state is known as the caving capital of India and has several limestone caves that you can explore with your family. Some of these caves are among the world’s longest caves and have caverns with lakes . You are bound to find raw fossils in many of the popular caves like the Mawsmai Cave, Krem Liat Prah, and Krem Mawmluh.

Meghalaya is also unlike the rest of India and is home to several indigenous tribes . There is a lovely museum in Shillong that helps you learn about their culture and traditions. You can also, visit the cleanest village in Asia, Mawlynnong , and interact with the locals – in fact even play a game of football with them.

The best time to visit Meghalaya would be between March to May (before the monsoons set in) and from October to March. The state capital Shillong has a lot of cherry blossoms in winter and even hosts a small festival around it in December.

The closest airport to Meghalaya would be in Guwahati – which is around a 3 to 4-hour drive from Shillong. You can hire a cab directly from the Guwahati airport to Shillong.

You can base yourself in Shillong , which has a wide range of options to suit every possible budget. However, most of the caves and waterfalls are located closer to Sohra. Sohra has very limited options for stays – mostly homestays and you will need to book them well in advance.

Queenstown, New Zealand

Known as the “adventure capital” of the world, Queenstown is like one big playground for kids and adults alike. Located next to Lake Wakatipu and nestled beneath snow-capped mountains , it’s a beautiful and fun place for an active, family-friendly outdoor vacation.

Any time of year is a good time to visit Queenstown , so planning when to visit depends on what you’d like to do! Summer is best for hiking and lake activities . If you’re after a ski holiday instead, visit between late June through August for the best snow conditions. The Remarkables Ski Field is just a 40-minute drive from Queenstown and has excellent options for everyone, from beginners to expert skiers.

No matter the time of year, one activity not to be missed is the Skyline Luge ! Getting to the luge requires a quick ride up the Skyline Gondola to Bob’s Peak, which offers amazing views over Queenstown. The luge tracks are so much fun for all ages.

Fuel up for your Queenstown adventures with a delicious breakfast at Yonder , and head to Lord of the Fries for hearty plant-based burgers.

Australia’s East Coast

Some of the best things to do along the way for families with children include going paddleboarding, swimming , or spending time in vibrant cities like Gold Coast or Brisbane . Fiji is fun for families with kids of all ages . Known for its resorts, the first thing families need to decide is if they want to stay on the main island in Fiji or on a remote island. Intercontinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa is located about an hour south of Nadi Airport and has a beautiful beach in addition to multiple swimming pools and outdoor activities.

Fly into Nadi International Airport and then choose between renting a car, taking a taxi, or booking a shuttle to your hotel. Please remember that the CBP officer at the port of entry decides whether to admit non-immigrants into the United States. The facts and circumstances presented at the time you apply to enter are the basis of this decision. SEVP cannot guarantee that CBP will admit or re-admit you into the United States.

Travel Re-entry: F Visa

Re-entry for f-1 non-immigrants travelling outside the united states for five months or fewer.

This section of the FAQ applies to continuing F-1 students who travel outside the United States for five months or less.

Students should consult their Designated School Official (DSO) prior to travelling. Your DSO generally works in the International Student Office. You must have a current SEVIS Form I-20 endorsed for travel and your DSO needs to be able to verify that your SEVIS record is accurate and up-to-date.

What are the basic requirements for an F-1 to re-enter the United States after travelling abroad on pleasure or personal business?

• A Form I-20, endorsed for travel and signed by your DSO
• You have been out of the United States for less than five months
• A current passport valid for at least six months after the date of your reentry or, if you are from one of the countries listed below, a passport that is current through the date of entry
• A valid, current visa or you travelled to contiguous country or adjacent island for less than thirty days
• Financial information showing proof of necessary funds to cover tuition and living expenses

If you are from a visa exempt country, you do not need a visa to reenter the United States from the western hemisphere, but make sure that you present your I-20 to be admitted as an F-1 student and not a visitor.

What if I have an expired passport or one that will expire in less than six months?

You must renew your passport before re-entering the United States. In most cases, to enter the United States, you must have a passport that is valid for at least six months after the date you enter or re-enter.

However, the countries listed below have an agreement with the United States that allows you to enter on a current passport up to the actual date of expiration.

Try to keep your passport current at all times. You need to determine your country’s requirements and timelines for renewing passports. Many countries will allow you to renew your passport while in the United States. The other alternative is to renew your passport when you return home for a visit.

In some cases, you may want to delay leaving the United States until you have renewed your passport. You will not be able to re-enter the United States without a valid passport. If your expired passport has a valid visa, you can still use that visa if you kept the old passport. Present the old passport, along with the new passport when you reenter the country. The countries that have an agreement with the United States allowing entry with a passport until the date of expiration are as follows:

What if my F-1 student visa has expired?

You can stay in the United States on an expired F-1 visa as long as you maintain your student status. However, if you are returning home or traveling to a country where automatic revalidation does not apply, you must have a valid visa to return to the United States.

Ensure that you have all the documentation you need for your visa application and allow sufficient time for processing a new visa. The documentation you may need for a new visa includes, but is not limited to the following:

• A Form I-20, endorsed for travel and signed by your DSO (see your DSO before you travel)
• Original evidence showing proof of necessary funds to cover tuition and living expenses
• Evidence showing your intention to return to your home country upon program completion, including evidence of compelling social and economic ties to your home country
• If you have applied for or had optional practical training (OPT) approved, bring a copy of your Form I-20 endorsed for OPT and your Employment Authorization Document (EAD), if you have one

The Department of State recommends that you apply for a visa in your home country. For more information about visa applications visit the Department of State (DoS) website at http://travel.state.gov/ .

You can apply in a third country for a visa, but you will not be able to return to the United States until DoS issues your visa. In some cases, this could take several weeks if DoS requires a background check. If DoS denies your visa, you will not be able to return to the United States. Be sure to check the DoS website for specific information pertaining to each embassy or consulate.

If you have an expired visa and a terminated record, we strongly advise that you do not travel outside the United States until your SEVIS record shows that you are in active status. If you do travel, you may not be able to renew your visa or return to the United States.

As a continuing student, will I need to pay the I-901 SEVIS fee if I travel outside the United States?

I wish to travel to Canada, Mexico, or one of the islands adjacent to the United States. Can I return if my visa is expired?

Yes, in most cases. You can usually revalidate an expired visa automatically when returning from a visit of less than thirty days to Canada, Mexico, or one of the islands adjacent to the United States provided that you have a valid Form I-20 and a valid unexpired Form I-94. This process is known as automatic visa revalidation.

Which islands are defined as “adjacent islands”?

The adjacent islands are:

• Saint Pierre
• The Dominican Republic
• The Bahamas
• The Windward and Leeward Islands
• Other British, French, and Netherlands territory or possessions in or bordering on the Caribbean Sea

Can I travel to Cuba and return to the United States?

Yes, provided that you have a valid visa to return and are otherwise admissible. Please note that Cuba may require you to apply for a visa in order to enter that country.

Do I need a valid visa to visit Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands, or the Northern Mariana Islands?

No, unless your travel plans include entry to any other country en route to these U.S. territories. You will need a valid Form I-20 and a valid unexpired Form I-94. Be sure that you do not have a terminated SEVIS record indicating that you are out of status.

How do I know if I have a terminated record in SEVIS?

Your DSO can tell you your SEVIS record status and give you appropriate travel related advice.

I want to travel outside the United States, but my SEVIS record is in terminated status. Can I return if I travel?

If you need to travel on a terminated record, you must first visit your DSO. If your school has requested a correction request or data fix, the DSO will put your correction request or help desk ticket number on your Form I-20 and report your pending travel to SEVP.

There is no guarantee that Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will readmit you to the United States if you travel on a terminated record. In most cases, CBP inspectors will allow you to reenter the United States if you are otherwise admissible and your DSO has properly annotated your Form I-20. It is likely, however, that the CBP officer at the port of entry will send you to secondary inspection while they determine whether you are eligible to return to the United States.

If you have an expired visa and a terminated record, SEVP advises you not to travel outside the United States until your SEVIS record shows that you are in Active status. If you do travel, you may not be able to renew your visa or return to the United States.

Can I travel outside the United States if I have a Form I-485 adjustment of status application pending?

No, not without advance permission. If you depart the United States with a pending Form I-485, you have abandoned your application unless you receive permission in advance from USCIS to return to the United States. We call this Advance Parole . Additionally, CBP may also consider you ineligible to return to the United States as an F-1 student because your application to change status to that of a permanent resident is evidence of intent to immigrate, which is inconsistent with nonimmigrant student status.

Can I re-establish F-1 student status by obtaining a new initial Form I-20 and reentering the United States?

Yes. However, you will be considered an initial student for SEVIS purposes. You will have to pay the I-901 SEVIS fee again and you will lose any time that you have accrued toward qualification for training (OPT) or employment .

You must have the new Form I-20 showing that you are entering on a new SEVIS ID number.

You should be aware that the CBP inspecting officer will determine whether or not to admit you to the United States with the new Form I-20. If you did not comply with the terms of your status during a prior stay in the United States, the CBP officer may decide that you are not eligible to reenter.

Can I reenter during the 60-day period after finishing my program or OPT?

No. The 60-day “grace” period is only to prepare to leave the country.

Can I reenter if my request for OPT is pending?

Yes, but traveling during this time should be undertaken with caution. USCIS may send you a request for evidence while you are away, however, so you would want to make sure you have provided a correct U.S. address both to your DSO and on the application and would be able to send in requested documents. Also, if USCIS approves your OPT application, you will be expected to have your EAD in hand to re-enter the United States. Like a request for further information, USCIS can only send the EAD to your U.S. address.

Can I reenter if I left while on OPT?

If USCIS has approved your OPT you will be expected to have your EAD in hand to re-enter the United States, in addition to your Form I-20, valid passport and visa, and a letter of employment if you have one. If you exceed the limits on unemployment while outside the United States, you will not be eligible to re-enter the United States in F-1 status.

Are there any other requirements for travel outside the United States?

The questions above outline the general requirements for reentry for F-1 students. However, because individual circumstances vary, consult your DSO, embassy, or legal advisor before traveling. Planning for your trip early ensures that you have enough time to get all of your travel documents in order.

If you are not returning to your home country, you should check the requirements of the country you are visiting. Some countries require a visa. You may also need a transit visa for countries where you are making a connecting flight. Be sure to check before you travel. Most countries have immigration websites that provide visa information. Can I go to Canada or Mexico and apply for a new visa?

In some cases, you can. Contact the individual U.S. Embassy or Consulate in Canada or Mexico. However, you cannot return to the United States until DoS issues you a new visa. Applying for a new visa is not the same as automatic visa revalidation. You cannot apply for a new visa and take advantage of automatic visa revalidation at the same time.

What is automatic visa revalidation?

Automatic visa revalidation allows most F-1 students to take a trip of less than 30 days to countries contiguous to the United States and reenter on an expired visa provided you have proper documentation and have not applied for a new visa during the visit. This process revalidates your visa (making it eligible for the single trip), but does not renew it.

Dependents may stay in the United States without the primary if the primary:

• Is in valid status
• Will return after a temporary absence using the same SEVIS ID number

If USCIS and your DSO have approved your OPT but you depart before you get a job, your OPT ends and you cannot re-enter. If you have a job, however, you may travel and re-enter to resume work.

Cheapest countries to fly to

The countries highlighted in this article are affordable across a range of travel expenses, including grub, housing, sightseeing, and domestic transit. But they’re not always cheap to get to. And after factoring in airfare, some are only truly cost effective if you can stay for a few weeks or longer.

If you’re craving a foreign escape but you have a relatively short window of time to travel, you might want to zero in on destinations with low-cost airfare (which, for U.S.-based travelers typically = countries in Central America and the Caribbean).

How to choose your destination

Travel interests

Ever asked yourself, ‘Why all the wanderlust?’ We all want to get away for different reasons, and doing some preemptive soul-searching can help you better predict which countries you’ll truly vibe with.

Poland’s conveyor belt of medieval villages will captivate anyone who’s fond of cobblestone streets and Brick Gothic castles. But its conveyor belt of potatoes (followed by more potatoes) will bore insatiable chow-hounds, who should pay the extra airfare to get to a bonafide gastroparadise, like Malaysia.

Ease of domestic travel

Is there enough to do in one small region, or will you need to be mobile to feel satisfied with your trip?

Transit costs won’t be too much of a factor if you plan on confining your visit to one city — and there are some megacities where you can spend weeks without a moment of boredom (hello Istanbul). But trying to reach two far-flung locales within one ginormous country can bloat your budget, particularly if public transit options are limited.

And keep in mind that two comparably developed countries may have completely different levels of public transit access. India’s vast rail network makes it a haven for low-cost inter-city travel. But ask a Brazilian about trains from Rio to Salvador and expect a dumbfounded, ‘Hã?’

Medical care

If you have a history of medical issues, it shouldn’t categorically prevent you from traveling overseas. But it might influence your destination choice. Low cost of living/travel often correlates to limited health care infrastructure, though there are some exceptions (e.g., Portugal).

Uncle Sam’s input

Always check the U.S. Department of State’s travel advisories just before buying an international flight, and check again in the days leading up to your departure.

All of the countries featured in this article had Level 1 or 2 advisories at the time of publication. A number of places that otherwise would have featured on this list — like Nicaragua, Peru, or Egypt — were omitted due to an increased risk assessment.

If your planned destination is currently safe but historically prone to turmoil, consider booking refundable flights and lodging. And check that your travel insurance will cover an early return home in the event of an outbreak of violence or a natural disaster.

There’s nothing more economical than an open mind

It’s a bummer if you’re priced out of traveling in a fabulous yet exorbitantly expensive locale.

But there are nearly 200 different countries scattered around our shared rock today. And for every Switzerland and Singapore (or, for that matter, United States), remember that there’s an equally exciting and less wallet-crippling alternative waiting for you to visit.

Arrival/Departure History Now Available on I-94 Webpage

Customs and Border Protection launched a new webpage on May 1 that offers nonimmigrant U.S. visitors access to their I-94 arrival/departure record and their arrival/departure history.

The new CBP webpage allows nonimmigrant travelers to access arrival/departure records going back five years from the request date. This electronic travel-history function means that travelers may no longer need to file Freedom of Information Act requests to receive their arrival/departure history, greatly speeding their process. Travelers will have electronic access to the date and port of entry of their arrivals and departures.

When travelers visit the I-94 webpage they can retrieve their I-94 arrival/departure record number and five-year travel history by entering the required name, date of birth, and passport information.

Clicking on “Get Most Recent I-94” will return the I-94 number, most recent date of entry, class of admission and admit-until date. The information does not reflect changes of status, extension of stay or adjustments of status granted by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Travelers then have the option to print the record.

Clicking on “Get Travel History” will return their five-year travel history based on their I-94 records, which they also can print.

Travelers can also cancel pending Freedom of Information Act requests for travel history information—after they have received the information from the new website—by adding their FOIA Request Number and clicking on “Request FOIA Cancellation” button.

CBP began the online version of Form I-94 in April 2013. The positive public response to that streamlining prompted the agency to offer travel histories online as well.

If a traveler has lost a paper form I-94 that was issued prior to the online system and the record is not available online, the traveler can file a Form I-102, Application for Replacement/Initial Non-Immigrant Arrival-Departure Document, with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.

International Travel as a Permanent Resident

In general, you will need to present a passport from your country of citizenship or your refugee travel document to travel to a foreign country. In addition, the foreign country may have additional entry/exit requirements (such as a visa). For information on foreign entry and exit requirements, see the Department of State’s website .

If seeking to enter the United States after temporary travel abroad, you will need to present a valid, unexpired “Green Card” (Form I-551, Permanent Resident Card). When arriving at a port of entry, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officer will review your permanent resident card and any other identity documents you present, such as a passport, foreign national I.D. card or U.S. Driver’s License, and determine if you can enter the United States. For information pertaining to entry into the United States, see U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s webpage .

Permanent residents are free to travel outside the United States, and temporary or brief travel usually does not affect your permanent resident status. If it is determined, however, that you did not intend to make the United States your permanent home, you will be found to have abandoned your permanent resident status. A general guide used is whether you have been absent from the United States for more than a year. Abandonment may be found to occur in trips of less than a year where it is believed you did not intend to make the United States your permanent residence. While brief trips abroad generally are not problematic, the officer may consider criteria such as whether your intention was to visit abroad only temporarily, whether you maintained U.S. family and community ties, maintained U.S employment, filed U.S. income taxes as a resident, or otherwise established your intention to return to the United States as your permanent home. Other factors that may be considered include whether you maintained a U.S. mailing address, kept U.S. bank accounts and a valid U.S. driver’s license, own property or run a business in the United States, or any other evidence that supports the temporary nature of your absence.

If you plan on being absent from the United States for longer than a year, it is advisable to first apply for a reentry permit on Form I-131 . Obtaining a reentry permit prior to leaving the United States allows a permanent or conditional permanent resident to apply for admission into the United States during the permit’s validity without the need to obtain a returning resident visa from a U.S. Embassy or Consulate abroad. Please note that it does not guarantee entry into the United States upon your return as you must first be determined to be admissible; however, it will assist you in establishing your intention to permanently reside in the United States. If you remain outside of the United States for more than 2 years, any reentry permit granted before your departure from the United States will have expired. In this case, it is advisable to consider applying for a returning resident visa (SB-1) at the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. An SB-1 applicant will be required to establish eligibility for an immigrant visa and will need a medical exam. There is an exception to this process for the spouse or child of either a member of the U.S. Armed Forces or civilian employee of the U.S. Government stationed abroad on official orders. Additionally, absences from the United States of six months or more may disrupt the continuous residency required for naturalization. If your absence is one year or longer and you wish to preserve your continuous residency in the United States for naturalization purposes, you may file an Application to Preserve Residence for Naturalization Purposes on Form N-470. If you lose your Green Card or reentry permit or it is stolen or destroyed while you are abroad, you may need to file a Form I-131A, Application for Travel Document (Carrier Documentation) . This carrier documentation will allow an airline or other transportation carrier to board a lawful permanent resident bound for the United States without the carrier being penalized. Bangkok has an enduring allure to global visitors that never seems to get old or go out of style – it continues to fight for its spot on lists of the world's most visited cities.

From hallowed monasteries to all-night techno clubs, street noodles to Michelin-starred tasting menus, and lush public parks to gritty urban train loops, Thailand's capital will leave you dizzy with options and a never-ending list of reasons to return.

That admirable versatility creates an extreme range of costs, reflecting differing income levels and social strata amongst both locals and international visitors. The City of Angels can be a gift to budget travelers if you know where to cut corners but costs can quickly spiral if you go off script. Choose local budget airlines

Two airlines based in Thailand – Nok Air and Thai AirAsia – almost always offer lower domestic fares than those posted by national carrier Thai Airways and boutique-marketed Bangkok Airways. It also pays to travel lightly – eligible carry-ons can be taken aboard for free, while checked luggage costs 300B and up for 15kg (Thai AirAsia) or 20 kg (Nok Air). If you can't resist traveling without your home comforts, book your checked baggage in advance to save cash. Start planning early to nab the cheapest fares and choose off-season bargains to save big and stretch your budget.

Opt for a cold beer over cocktails

Wine and spirits, whether imported or produced in Thailand, are subject to high taxes – as much as 400% for imported wine. Just one bottle of wine can double or triple your restaurant tab – a night out in Bangkok that focuses on cocktails and cabernet can often cost the same as one in a European or US city. Beer, which is subject to a much lower tax rate, will bring your restaurant and bar bills down to more affordable levels.

Domestic beers such as Singha, Chang and Leo cost about 30-40% less than imported beers. International brands that are brewed in Thailand under license, such as Heineken San Miguel and Tiger, are priced in between domestic and imported beers. Thai craft beers, including such well-known brands as Chalawan, Chatri and Busaba, aren’t actually brewed in Thailand but in neighboring countries Cambodia and Vietnam, as well as in Australia; they tend to be priced similarly to imported beers.

Eat like a local

The dining scene in Bangkok has exploded over the last decade. Enterprising chefs from all over the world, along with practically every global culinary franchise, have moved in with a vengeance. At last count the city boasted 30 Michelin-starred chefs, elevating Bangkok to world-class levels for fine dining. Although these tasty delights are wonderful for a big occasional blowout, they're not a nightly option for those visiting on a budget.

Luckily, Bangkok is known for its incredible street food culture and the streets are where you'll find the best bargains. It’s also where you’ll find the most authentically Thai and Thai-Chinese cuisine, arguably representing the real heart and soul of the city. Bangkok street food includes not only umbrella-shaded carts parked at the edge of the road or on footpaths but also one-room eateries in modest shophouses throughout the city.

You'll find the pick of such culinary gems in Talat Noi, Chinatown, Suan Phlu, Phra Nakhon and Banglamphu and also in lesser numbers sprinkled about every precinct of the city. Multiple-course, family-style meals are very affordable; for tighter budgets, stick to one-plate dishes where rice is included in the order.

Embrace public transport

Taxi fares are relatively low compared to many other major global cities, but they can still eat up your daily budget quickly. The BTS Skytrain and MRT subway lines are much better budget options than taxis and you won't waste time sitting in traffic jams. The networks are quite extensive and you can reach just about any corner of the city using one or the other.

Travel cards are available for both modes of transport, but there are no discounts available and you’ll have to pay a deposit for the card. For short visits, it’s better to buy separate tickets at the station. MRT offers a 50% discount for seniors (over 60 years of age) for all fares, and you don’t have to be a Thai citizen to take advantage of the discount – just show your passport at the ticket window. A 50% discount is also available on MRT for children who are under 120cm (3.9ft) tall and aged under 14. BTS doesn’t offer senior or child fares for foreigners.

City bus fares are even cheaper than rail or subway fares, but the huge network (with over 500 separate routes) is complicated and the buses tend to be slow and relatively uncomfortable. Canal boat lines are similarly cheap but much easier to figure out. Boats run frequently in daylight hours along Khlong Saen Saep across the city from west to east, and they’re especially useful for passengers visiting attractions along the lengthy Sukhumvit Road. Hop on a motorcycle taxi from the canal jetties to get there quickly.

The Chao Phraya River Express line operates passenger boats up and down the Chao Phraya River, stopping at piers on both sides along the way for fares of between 14 to 33B. There's also a Chao Phraya Tourist Boat hop-on-hop-off service that departs every 30 minutes from 11 piers between Sathorn Pier and Phra Arthit Pier. A ticket costs 150B and includes unlimited stops along the route for one day, running from Sathorn to Phra Arthit between 9am and 7:15pm and from Phra Arthit to Sathorn between 8am and 6:30pm.

Stay outside the tourist hub

Generally speaking, restaurants and accommodations along or near Sukhumvit Rd from Soi 1 and as far east as Soi 65 tend to be more expensive than elsewhere in the city. The concentration of bars, nightclubs, restaurants, speakeasies, and massage shops in this district is significantly higher here than in any other area in Bangkok but you'll pay for the privilege.

Go beyond the tourist hub to find bargains in Talat Noi, Chinatown and Phra Nakhon (sometimes referred to as Old Town), three contiguous neighborhoods extending from Charoen Krung Rd parallel to the Chao Phraya River and then north to the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew. Amidst the most historic buildings and temples in the city, there are dozens of budget hostels and guesthouses, along with small eateries and street vendors offering some of the best and most authentic Thai and Chinese cooking in the city. All for less than half the price you'd pay around Sukhumvit Rd.

The districts around Sathon and Silom Rds are a little more expensive than their Old Town neighbors but tend to be more colorful, culturally engaging and affordable than the Sukhumvit area. Towards the north end of the city, the Ari neighborhood is similarly mid-level when it comes to budget but has a more authentic Thai community vibe.

Following the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks, several countries began putting sky marshals on flights.

• Sky marshals are covert officers trained to prevent hijackings and other crimes onboard aircraft.
• The United States started the Federal Air Marshal Service after hijackings peaked in the late 1960s.
• The program expanded after September 11th, 2001, leading other countries to implement similar policies.

Did you know that the United States is not the only country to have plain-clothed armed officers on some flights? Onboard, to prevent hijackings or the use of an aircraft to commit a terrorist attack, such individuals are an extra measure in the aviation security system.

Known as sky marshals, air marshals, or in-flight security officers (IFSO), they are covert undercover law enforcement or anti-terrorist officers trained to prevent hijackings. Some airlines, such as Israeli airline El Al, provide sky marshals on every flight (in addition to other famous security efforts), while others rely on government agencies like the US Federal Air Marshal Service.

Hijacking aircraft became popular in the 1960s and 1970s

In 1958, as the revolutionary fighters tightened their grip on Cuba, people looking to flee the island started to hijack planes to escape. By 1961, the tables had turned with hijackers demanding to be taken to Cuba. According to the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA), in the 1960s, there were 100 attempts to hijack American planes. Realizing the danger this posed, in July 1961, the FAA issued a directive banning unauthorized personnel from carrying firearms aboard aircraft. The same year, the FAA and the Department of Justice started a program to put trained air marshals on flights.

What Are Federal Air Marshals & Which Flights Do They Travel On?

Between 1968 and 1972, the United States saw a spate of hijackings, which were from people demanding to be taken to Cuba or an attempt to extort money. One of the most famous hijackings occurred on November 24th, 1971, when on a flight between Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington.

D.B. Cooper told a flight attendant he had a bomb a nd was prepared to blow up the plane. When the plane landed in Seattle, he demanded to be given $200,000 and four parachutes. He also demanded enough fuel be put onboard to fly him to Mexico. About 30 minutes after taking off from Seattle, Cooper lowered the Boeing 727s rear door and parachuted into the night, never to be seen again.

By 1980, most airports worldwide had introduced metal detectors and X-ray machines, which led to many terrorists planting bombs on planes. This is evident in the downing of Air India Flight 182 over the Irish coast and Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. The 1980s also saw an uptick in hijackings in the Middle East, yet hijackings in the United States had declined significantly.

September 11, 2001

On the morning of September 11th, 2001, four airliners were hijacked by 19 Al-Qaeda terrorists and deliberately flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon close to Washington, DC.

A fourth aircraft, on its way to Washington DC, crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after passengers tried to take back the plane. A total of 2,977 people were killed as a result of the attack, and the way we fly was changed forever.

The Air Marshal program was expanded

Following these 9/11 attacks, President George W. Bush ordered the rapid expansion of the Federal Air Marshal Service and created the US Department of Homeland Security. Under the control of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), it is believed that around 4,000 air marshals are deployed on American carrier flights worldwide.

Is There An Air Marshal On Every Flight?

In 2004, the United States government asked European Union nations to put armed air marshals on selected flights between the EU and the United States. Several EU states, including Denmark, Portugal, and Sweden, were against the idea as the United States looked to tighten security further so as not to have a repeat of the September 11th, 2001, terrorist attacks.

At the time of the request, Washington had yet to specify which routes and flights it would like to see armed air marshals on. Some European airlines complained that having air marshals on flights would cost them money as their governments would not pay for the air marshal seats.

Despite the opposition from some countries, others have taken the proposal in stride and have had undercover armed officers on flights following the September 11th, 2001, attacks.

European countries with sky marshals

Sky marshals on Austrian Airlines flights are provided by the Einsatzkommando Cobra, a special anti-terrorism unit created in Austria following the massacre of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics.

Germany began deploying plain-clothed armed officers on some medium and all long-haul flights following the 9/11 attacks. Angry that it was losing revenue because German sky marshals are usually seated somewhere in business class to be near the cockpit, Lufthansa sued the Federal Government.

However, in 2018, the court ruled in favor of the government, saying airline costs were negligible compared to their turnover in the billions of euros.

The Spanish Guardia Civil provides armed, highly trained plain clothes officers for Spanish airline flights. Not only are the Spanish sky marshals trained to combat hijackers, but they are also able to take control of a plane and land it should it be necessary.

Switzerland

The Swiss Federal Office of Police provides undercover armed guards for specific flights.

United Kingdom

An armed sky marshal program was created in the United Kingdom in 2002. The plain-clothed officers are provided by the Metropolitan Police Service Specialist Firearms Command SO19. Very little is known about them as the program is highly selective.

Non-European countries

In response to 9/11, Australia instituted an air security officer (ASO) program under the Australian Federal Police. The ASO Program provides undercover officers on flights operated by Australian registered airlines.

Following a memorandum of understanding between the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and Transport Canada, specially trained undercover armed RCMP officers fly on Canadian airlines. Despite being police officers, they will not get involved in dealing with unruly passengers.

India introduced undercover armed officers on flights following the hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight 814 in Kandahar, Afghanistan. Recruited from the elite National Security Guard, India places sky marshals on all Indian airline flights to and from the United States.

Pakistan places undercover armed officers on all Pakistan-registered airliners.

The Singapore national flag carrier Singapore Airlines has highly trained officers from the security command or the special tactics and rescue (STAR) of the Singapore Police Force. The officers are armed with special ammunition that will not deprive an aircraft and with dart-firing stun guns.

Spam is poised to make a comeback in 2024. The processed canned meat product has gotten a bit of a bad rap since the height of its popularity during World War II—though it's continued to be a staple of Hawaiian cuisine. But, according to the  food and beverage market researchers at Datassential, Spam will be "making a new life for itself" this year, thanks to new social media attention, collaborations with influencers and chefs, and food inflation pushing shoppers toward inexpensive products. While it's become popular in many Asian countries and there's a level of notoriety for it in the U.K. ( thanks to a "Monty Python" reference ), Spam is often one of those foods that's synonymous with overly processed American diets.

What exactly is American food though? It can sometimes be a challenge to define because of the country's expansive landscape and diversity, all of which contribute to the national cuisine. Hamburgers, milkshakes, and apple pies easily qualify as typical "American" food—food that can be easily acquired and is enjoyed at thousands of international McDonald's locations. But America has unique delicacies and treats that can rarely be found anywhere else and haven't won over global tastebuds.

While a peanut butter and jelly sandwich is, if not beloved, at least known in practically every corner of this country, the very concept of a PB&J disgusts many in other countries. To further explore this phenomenon, Stacker compiled a list of 20 uniquely American foods that might raise the eyebrows of anybody outside of the U.S. using reports from Tasting Table, Eater, Food & Wine, and various other sources.

This list's food ranges from national culinary icons to regional treats. Taken together, they also paint a picture of American life, from the value of convenience to the influence of immigrant cultures. All foods were either invented, first recorded, or popularized by the United States to a point where it's become closely associated with the country. Peanut butter and jelly sandwich

The PB&J is a quintessentially American sandwich, but it's simply not as ubiquitous in other countries. Part of the reason is that peanut butter has been historically difficult to find in countries like Argentina and the Philippines, where there just isn't a big appetite for the product.

Chicken-fried steak

Although this dish has roots and similarities to German and Austrian wiener schnitzel or Argentinian milanesa, people commonly identify chicken-fried steak with the American South. The dish, which doesn't include chicken at all, consists of a breaded and fried beefsteak, typically served with mashed potatoes and gravy.

Sweet potato casserole

It's either beloved or despised, but a sweet potato casserole will almost always be found at an American Thanksgiving dinner table. The recipe involves roasting sweetened sweet potatoes topped with a gooey layer of marshmallows and was first introduced in 1917 thanks to the Angelus Marshmallows company's effort to increase sales.

Ambrosia salad

Ambrosia salad is popular in the South, particularly around the holidays. The dish typically includes a variety of canned fruits, marshmallows, coconut, and creamy ingredients like mayonnaise, whipped cream, sour cream, or yogurt. The earliest reference to this sweet salad is in the 1867 "Dixie Cookery" cookbook by Maria Massey Barringer.

Cheez Whiz, a spreadable, processed cheese that comes in a jar or spray can, turns heads in countries like France, where high-quality cheese is a national treasure. While the first commercially processed cheese was made in Switzerland in 1911, the treat has been uniquely American since Kraft patented a formula for processed cheese in America in 1916. It has since been the choice cheese for many dishes, including Philly's iconic cheesesteak.

Tater Tots—little, poppable fried clumps of potatoes—were first introduced in 1954 by the founders of the American frozen food company Ore-Ida, F. Nephi and Golden Grigg. The crispy snack gained popularity due to its convenience and tastiness and has since been a staple of the American school cafeteria.

Corn dogs, hot dogs on a stick coated entirely with fried sweet cornbread, are a sweet and savory on-the-go snack typically found at American recreational locales like theme parks, fairs, and beachside boardwalks. Like a few other items on this list, the origins of the corn dog are widely disputed. Some claim it first appeared at a Texas state fair in 1942 , and others claim a version of a corn dog called a Pronto Pup appeared on Labor Day 1939 in Portland, Oregon. Either way, this is a one-of-a-kind iteration of a hot dog that might look strange to anyone outside the U.S.

Chicken and waffles

While neither chicken nor waffles are specifically American delicacies, the combination of the two is very American. The dish pairs savory, crispy fried chicken with sweet and fluffy waffles, often with butter and syrup to boot, and is typically found in the American South. Some have speculated chicken and waffles as a meal has roots in both Dutch and German, as well as African American cuisine.

The Cobb salad, a giant salad containing practically the whole food pyramid, consists of chopped iceberg lettuce or romaine, bacon, chicken breast, tomato, hard-boiled eggs, avocado, cheese (generally blue), chives, and is tossed with a red wine vinaigrette. The salad was born in 1937 at the Brown Derby restaurant in Hollywood by owner Robert Howard Cobb. Though the ingredients are not particularly odd, the salad is high in calories and salt, which may be considered unhealthy to diners from other countries.

Grits, a type of porridge made from boiled cornmeal, is not something you'd typically see on breakfast tables in any other country. Though similar to polenta, which can be found globally, the food has roots in Native American cuisine ( though it isn't tied to any one culture). Grits have been largely adopted as a staple in the American South.

People across the U.S. may have their own way of making a Sloppy Joe, but the dishes all end up as some iteration of a sweet, tomato-y, loose-meat sandwich that requires multiple napkins. A staple of school cafeterias, the Sloppy Joe has multiple origin stories , including one where Ernest Hemingway popularized the sandwich in America by way of Cuba.

It may shock people outside the U.S., or perhaps even outside of New York, that an egg cream contains neither egg nor cream. The treat contains milk, chocolate syrup, and seltzer. It originated in New York City's Jewish community during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Jell-O salad

Once a widely popular American dish, jello salad can perhaps raise American eyebrows just as easily as non-American eyebrows. The now-retro dish, which embeds anything from fruit to tuna in jiggly, sweet gelatin, was once ubiquitous and became particularly popular during the Depression. This was a time when households were encouraged to get the most out of their food by getting creative with gelatin, all through post-World War II.

Biscuits and gravy

These flaky, buttery biscuits smothered in thick, savory gravy would be an odd dish in any Parisian bistro or Singaporean hawker center. The merging of biscuits with gravy is said to have first occurred in the late 1800s in southern Appalachia. This Southern dish can still be found in diners and eateries nationwide.

American cheese

As if the name doesn't say it all, American cheese is a very American delicacy that comes in convenient little plastic-wrapped squares and is not particularly well respected in the rest of the world. It's a processed cheese made from cheddar and, like Cheez Whiz, was developed when Kraft patented their way of processing cheese. Also known as yellow cheese, it's a beloved choice for American staples like grilled cheese and cheeseburgers.

It's comparable to a hamburger or meatball, but meatloaf is really its own thing. There are many iterations of a classic American meatloaf recipe, dating back to the late 1800s , but it will often be served alongside some ketchup and mashed potatoes.

Root beer float

A scoop of ice cream in root beer is a popular dessert found in typical American diners across the country. Allegedly invented by Colorado gold mine owner, Frank J. Wisner, in 1893, the drink is often paired with other classic American foods like french fries and hamburgers. Many non-Americans find the flavor of root beer itself to be unappetizing.

Girl Scout cookies

Cookies are universal, but ones sold by little girls in green uniforms in front of grocery stores, at soccer games, and door to door—and only during a specific period of time, are particularly unique to the states. For over 100 years, Girl Scout cookies have sparked a frenzy of excitement in Americans, who know they have a limited amount of time to buy and enjoy treats like Thin Mints, Samoas, and Trefoils.

A truly American innovation, Spam, a processed canned pork, was manufactured by Hormel Foods. After some trepidation following post-coronavirus travel slumps, several business owners are reporting a relatively strong start to the 2024 season.

For Chile Pepper Bike Shop, the week of Easter Jeep Safari — which occurred March 23–31 — served as a beneficial jolt to the traditional kickoff of spring tourist season.

“Easter weekend was a great start,” said store manager Phillip Martin. “I would say we were more consistent through March in general.”

Several hoteliers said the same at recent Grand County Travel Council Advisory Board meetings.

“We had an exceptionally busy Jeep Safari/Easter week,” said Brian Hunnings, chair of the board and manager of Red Cliffs Lodge.

“We did really well on Jeep Safari,” agreed Rebecca Monceaux, another member of the board who manages sales for the Element Moab. “…The season has hit full swing for us.”

While not necessarily indicative of the upcoming year, a robust spring may come as a relief following several years of post-coronavirus corrections in the tourism market.

“Everyone’s brand is diluted from COVID,” said Grand County Economic Development Director Ben Fredregill. “This is not a Moab-only [issue].”

At an international tourism conference he recently attended in Berlin, Germany, Fredregill said he was surprised at the money other adventure-tourist destinations are pouring into their marketing efforts.

“We are in a hugely competitive market — it’s always been competitive,” he said. “It is now on steroids.”

Fredregill noted that Moab’s tourist economy has faced other post-pandemic challenges, too. He specifically named the recent appeal of international travel coupled with the sluggish return of international tourists to U.S. markets, and increased selectivity in travel generally.

Indeed, following a bumper 2021 when the county’s Transient Room Tax revenue soared by 45% over 2019 levels, tax revenues noticeably slumped. They declined by 11.6% from 2021 to 2022 and another 8.4% from 2022 to 2023, according to Utah Office of Tourism analysis of inflation adjusted data from the Utah State Tax Commission.

Simultaneously, local hotels and short-term rentals had slightly more empty rooms in 2023 than 2022. According to Smith Travel Research, occupancy dropped 4% in 2023 compared to 2022. The research company Lighthouse estimated that occupancy of short-term rentals dropped by 5% the same year.

(Lighthouse also found that Grand County’s short-term rental supply climbed 14% from 2022 to 2023.)

The post-pandemic slackening isn’t necessarily unique to Moab, however. Many of Utah’s popular parks saw “a bit of a dip” following a travel-heavy 2021, per Denise Jordan, the director of marketing analytics and research for the Utah Office of Tourism.

“What we’ve seen since then is a … leveling out back to what we had seen in 2017, 2018, 2019,” Jordan said.

Visitation for Canyonlands National Park reflect that — their roughly 800,000 visitors in 2022 and 2023 roughly mirrors 2016–19. Arches National Park, on the other hand, saw about 1.4 million visitors in 2022 and 2023, more closely resembling 2015 and 2016 totals.

Jordan said one of the biggest differencesbetween Utah’s pre- and post-pandemic tourism is the absence of international visitors.

“What we know we’re missing is some of the international travel,” she said. “We haven’t seen international travel fully rebound.”

The state tourism office currently expects tourists from places like Europe and Asia to rebound to “2019 or greater numbers” in 2025, Jordan said.

Fredregill said he’s heard that many travelers are also more selective in their vacations.

“People that normally took three trips are now taking one,” he said.

At Chile Pepper, Martin said he’s seeing more spontaneous trips and fewer pre-booked travels.

“It feels like seat-of-your-pants tourism,” he joked.

Regardless, several business owners and managers reported rosy business in the first quarter of 2024.

Michael Miller, manager of Dewey’s Restaurant and Bar, said 2023 was a “decent” year and he’s anticipating the same this season.

“The mild weather really helped,” Miller said. “We feel like we’re in a good spot.”

At the travel council board’s March 12 meeting, both Hunnings and Monceaux reported a strong March.

“People are not afraid to spend money,” Hunnings said. “We’re definitely seeing a return of guests that all went to Europe last year because Europe opened up after COVID and now they’re back.”

Moab Chamber of Commerce Board President Shalee Bryant at the board’s April 9 meeting said she’s heard positive forecasts from several local businesses.

“I am hearing people are a little bit more optimistic than they were last year,” Bryant said. She noted, however, that some food trucks are still seeing deflated earnings after a tough 2023.

“They’re feeling a little concerned right now — just don’t want another repeat,” she said.

At the bike shop, Martin said the outdoor industry is still undergoing a reset and stabilization after the coronavirus boom. Staff are being conservative with their plans, he said, but they’re still feeling optimistic about business in 2024.

“The weather is good and getting better,” he said. “In general, I think the vibes are pretty high.”

Applying for a U.S. passport  outside  the United States is different than applying  inside  the United States. Each U.S. embassy and consulate has different procedures for submitting and processing your final documents.

In most countries, you must apply in person at a U.S. embassy or consulate for all passport services. In a limited number of countries, you may be eligible to access some services by mail. Check the U.S. embassy or consulate webpage for more information. 

Tips for Applying from Canada

• If you are eligible to renew your passport and need routine or expedited service , skip the trip to a U.S. embassy or consulate in Canada and  mail your Form DS-82  to the United States.
• If you are renewing from Canada and paying your fees on pay.gov, mail your application to the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa or a U.S. consulate . Do not mail your application to the addresses in the United States on Form DS-82 if you paid fees on pay.gov. 
• Use Canada Post as your delivery service when sending Form DS-82 to the United States. Do not use other delivery services. 
• We will return your completed passport by USPS First Class Mail and cannot return it via 1-2 day or express delivery.  
• Do not include your Canadian Social Insurance Number on your form in place of your U.S. Social Security Number.
• When renewing by mail, you must pay by check or money order in U.S. funds drawn from a U.S. banking institution.
• All first-time applicants and children under 16 must  apply in person  at a U.S. embassy or consulate in Canada.

Steps to Apply

1. fill out form.

Renew using  Form DS-82  if you respond "Yes" to all statements below about your most recent passport:

• I can submit it with my application.
• It is not damaged (other than normal wear and tear).
• I have never reported it lost or stolen.
• It was issued within the last 15 years.
• It was issued when I was age 16 or older.
• It was issued in my current name, or I can provide another document such as a marriage certificate or divorce decree that is evidence of my name change.
• It was not limited to less than the normal 10 year period of validity for an adult passport due to multiple passport thefts or losses, or due to issues with passport damage or mutilation. 

If you're not eligible to renew your passport, use Form DS-11 .

• Do not sign the application until instructed to do so by the embassy or consulate officer.
• If you do not have a Social Security number, you must submit a statement, signed and dated, that includes the phrase, “I declare under penalty of perjury under the laws of the United States of America that the following is true and correct:  I have never been issued a Social Security Number by the Social Security Administration.”

2. Provide Evidence of U.S. Citizenship

For Form DS-82 Your most recent passport is your evidence of U.S. citizenship. Please submit it with your application. We will return your old passport book and/or card if you are renewing by mail or in person.

For Form DS-11 Your evidence must be an original or certified, physical copy. A certified copy is any document that has the raised seal or stamp of the official issuing authority. You must submit one of the following documents:

• Full validity, undamaged U.S. passport (expired passports are accepted). Full validity means the document is/was valid for 10 years for adults and 5 years for children under 16.
• Issued by the city, county, or state of birth
• Lists your full name, date of birth, and place of birth
• Lists your parent(s)' full names
• Has the date filed with registrar's office (must be within one year of birth)
• Has the registrar's signature
• Has the seal or stamp of the city, county, or state which issued it
• Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth
• Certificate of Naturalization 
• Certificate of Citizenship

3. Bring Photocopy of Evidence of U.S. Citizenship (DS-11 ONLY)

In addition to the original or certified copy of your U.S. citizenship, you must submit a photocopy of the document.

• On white 8.5”x11” standard paper
• Black and white
• Single-sided

If you don't want to submit a photocopy of your citizenship evidence, you may submit a second certified copy of your citizenship evidence, which we will keep. If you don’t submit a photocopy or a second certified copy of your citizenship evidence, your passport processing could be delayed.

4. Present ID (DS-11 ONLY)

You must present one of the following identification documents (IDs) to the acceptance agent. The ID must readily identify you.

• Valid or expired, undamaged U.S. passport book or passport card 
• In-state, fully valid driver's license or enhanced driver's license with photo
• Certificate of Citizenship 
• Government employee ID (city, county, state, or federal)
• U.S. military or military dependent ID
• Current (valid) foreign passport
• Matricula Consular (Mexican Consular ID) - commonly used by a parent of a U.S. citizen child applicant
• U.S. Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) - commonly used by a parent of a U.S. citizen child applicant
• Trusted Traveler IDs (including valid Global Entry, FAST, SENTRI, and NEXUS cards)
• Enhanced Tribal Cards and Native American tribal photo IDs
• Note : You may be asked to present an additional ID when presenting one of these three documents: 1) In-state, fully-valid learner's permit with photo, 2) In-state, fully-valid non-driver ID with photo, or 3) temporary driver's license with photo. 
• Some states now issue digital ID documents (also known as mobile driver's licenses or mobile IDs). We cannot accept these digital IDs when you apply for your U.S. passport. You must continue to submit your physical, photo ID and a photocopy of the ID.  
• If you are changing the gender marker in your U.S. passport, please see these  additional requirements .

5. Bring Photocopy of ID (DS-11 ONLY)

Submit a photocopy of the front and back of each ID that you present when you apply.

• Photocopy must be on white, 8 1/2 x 11" standard paper.
• Photocopy cannot be double-sided.
• Do not decrease the image size (although you may enlarge it).

6. Determine Any Special Circumstances

If any of the below categories apply to you, you may have additional requirements for your passport application. Please see the relevant page for more information.

• Children under 16
• Children 16-17
• Previous passport was lost or stolen
• Owe child support
• Selecting your gender marker
• Official, diplomatic, or other special issuance passport
• Replacing a limited-validity passport
• Changing your name

Please note, for Children Under 16 : A DS-3053 "Statement of Consent" might be required for your child if one parent/guardian is unable to apply in person.  In certain countries, the DS-3053 form must be notarized at a U.S. embassy or consulate and cannot be notarized by a local notary public. 7. Provide a Photo

To avoid processing delays, be sure your photo meets all the  photo requirements .

8. Calculate Fees

You must pay fees for passport services. You cannot request a fee waiver for a passport using Form I-912 which is provided by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. This form is for immigration services and does not apply to U.S. passports.

Tips for renewing from Canada : We cannot return your completed passport to Canada using 1-2 day delivery services so please do not include 1-2 day delivery fees with your payment. 

Personal checks or money orders must draw on U.S. financial institutions based in the United States and be payable in U.S. dollars. We cannot accept passport fee payments drawing on non-U.S. financial institutions, even when payable in U.S. currency. Acceptable U.S. checks and money orders must have a 9-digit routing number, as in the example below.

If you're using Form DS-11 , please contact your U.S. embassy or consulate  for instructions.

If you're using  Form DS-82 , please send your application via Canada Post to one of the addresses (for either Routine or Expedited Service) listed on the form. If you listed a Canadian mailing address on your application, we will mail your new passport via First Class Mail to that address. We cannot send your passport via 1-2 day or express delivery. 

Frequently Asked Questions

Can i call the toll-free number for the national passport information center from outside the united states.

No. If you have questions while you are outside the United States, please visit your local  U.S. embassy or consulate  website for information.  

Can I pay with a personal check or money order outside the United States?

Yes, if you live in Canada and are eligible to renew your U.S. passport by mail. Personal checks or money orders must draw on U.S. financial institutions based in the United States and be payable in U.S. dollars.

No, if you are in most other countries. When you apply or renew in-person for passport services at U.S. embassies and consulates, only cash (local currency or U.S. dollars), or in some cases, credit cards are accepted. Please see the website of your  embassy or consulate  to confirm the forms of payment.

Can I pay extra for expedited service or shipping?

No. The expedited service and shipping fees do not apply outside the United States. Your local U.S. embassy or consulate will tell you about pick-up or mailing options. Embassies and consulates can issue a limited-validity emergency passport if you have urgent travel needs.

Tips for applying from Canada : When renewing your passport by mail, you may request expedited service, but we cannot return your completed passport via 1-2 day or express delivery. Do not include money for 1-2 day or express delivery with your application.

On the application, can the permanent address be the same as the mailing address?

It could be. If you are permanently living outside the United States, then they would be the same. Your U.S. embassy or consulate may or may not offer mailing services.

If you are temporarily living or traveling outside of the United States, put your current address as your mailing address and your U.S. address as your permanent address. 

Does my ‘Emergency Contact’ have to be somebody in the United States?

No. Your emergency contact does not have to be somebody in the United States, especially if you live permanently outside the United States. 

Please note : The online Form Filler does not allow you to enter an address outside the United States. If your emergency contact lives outside the United States, please leave this field blank. 

How will I receive my passport if I am outside the United States?

Delivery methods vary by embassy and consulate. Possible methods may include a self-paid courier, the mail service, or picking it up in person. Please check with the embassy or consulate to confirm delivery methods.

Tips for applying from Canada : If you're eligible to renew by mail, send your Form DS-82 and supporting documents via Canada Post to one of the U.S. addresses (either Routine or Expedited service) listed on Form DS-82. Your completed passport will be returned to your Canadian address via First Class Mail. We cannot return it to you via 1-2 day or express delivery service.

Do I have to provide my Social Security number on my passport application?

Yes. You must provide your Social Security number, if you have been issued one.

If you or your child does not have a Social Security number, you must sign and date a statement that includes the full name of the applicant and says: “I declare under penalty of perjury under the laws of the United States of America that the following is true and correct: I have (or my child has) never been issued a Social Security number by the Social Security Administration.”

Your passport application will be delayed or denied if you do not provide a Social Security number or a statement declaring that a Social Security number has not been issued to you. Contact the  Social Security Administration  for information about obtaining a new or replacement Social Security number and card.

If you are outside the United States and have an emergency need to travel, but you cannot locate your Social Security number, we may be able to issue you a limited passport for direct return to the United States only.

If you fail to provide the information, you will also have to pay an additional penalty enforced by the Internal Revenue Service. 

What size passport book will I get when I apply outside the United States?

You will automatically receive the large, non-standard passport book. 

Applicants in the United States can choose a standard passport book or the large, non-standard passport book with more visa pages. Both cost the same amount.
