Pollensa Mallorca: A Charming Day Trip From Palma

' src=

One of the things I love about the island of Mallorca is that it’s small enough to get around easily by car or bus. And that means that if you’re visiting the capital city, Palma, there are plenty of easily-accessible day trips you can do.

One of my favourite destinations for a day trip – and possibly the prettiest town in the whole of Mallorca – is Pollensa.

Contents (click to view)

Also known as Pollença (or sometimes Pollenca), this is a picturesque town of around 16,000 inhabitants that sits at the north of the island. It’s most famous for its charming old town, cute narrow winding streets, stunning natural surroundings, and historical significance.

About my visit to Pollença Mallorca

I took a city break to Palma Mallorca for a week in November. As part of my visit, I did a couple of day trips: one on the antique train to Soller , and one to Pollença (it’s pronounced Poy-EN-sa, by the way).

I loved wandering around the cute historic streets, admiring the architecture, hiking up nearby hills to admire the stunning views, and cooling off with an ice cream in the main square. A perfect day trip from Palma!

So this is my personal experience of doing a day trip to Pollensa, and the things I saw and did there. Hopefully it’ll help inspire your own travels.

Our group on our day trip from Palma to Pollença Mallorca

Where is Pollensa?

Pollensa is right at the northernmost tip of Mallorca, about 6 km (4 miles) inland from the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. By car, it’s about 55 km (35 miles) from Palma, making it easy to reach for a day trip.

A brief history of Pollensa Mallorca

Pollensa’s history dates back to the Bronze Age, with evidence of human settlements found in the area – including a fascinating burial cave dating back to 1770 BC (you can see objects from this excavation in the Pollensa Museum).

In 123 BC the settlement was taken over by the Romans, who named the town Pollentia. They lasted until 440 AD, when the town was attacked and sacked by the Vandals.

The Moors occupied Mallorca for several centuries, and their influence is still evident in the town’s architecture and layout. The Calvari Steps, a famous landmark with 365 steps leading to a chapel, is thought to have Moorish origins.

Pollensa is full of historic buildings everywhere you look

In 1229, King James I of Aragon launched a conquest of Mallorca, including Pollensa, which marked the end of Moorish rule. King James gifted Pollensa to the famous order of the Knights Templar, who built the Gothic-style church of Our Lady of Angels (Nostra Senyora dels Àngels) with its austere façade. The town’s narrow streets, stone buildings, and the historic town square, Plaça Major, also date from this era.

Pollensa, like many coastal towns in the Mediterranean, faced a turbulent period in the 15 th and 16 th centuries, with regular pirate attacks and another Moorish invasion in 1550. The town’s defensive walls, towers, and fortifications were constructed to protect against these threats.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, Pollensa flourished economically through agriculture, trade, and craftsmanship. It became known for its production of wine, olives, and textiles.

Finally in the 20 th century, Pollensa became a hub for artists and writers, who were attracted by its beautiful location and light. Many celebrated Spanish artists spent time here, as well as the renowned British crime writer Agatha Christie, who wrote “Problem at Pollensa Bay” during her stay.

How to spend a day in Pollensa Mallorca

The easiest way to spend your day in Pollença is simply just to walk around. It’s a very small town and easily navigable, especially if you have enabled data roaming on your phone – so that if you need to know where you are you can always check Google maps!

One of my favourite ways to explore a town is simply to wander and see what hidden gems I discover – and Pollenca is the perfect place to do that. Here are some of the top things to look out for.

Pollensa Old Town

The highlight of any day trip to Pollensa is simply to wander through the charming narrow streets of the historic Old Town, with its warm yellow stone buildings, quiet pedestrian streets and cute shops and cafes.

Pollensa Mallorca is home to dozens of cute cobbled streets

Placa Major (Main Square)

In the middle of the Old Town you’ll find the Plaça Major (main square), a historic square surrounded by centuries-old buildings adorned with wrought-iron balconies, and with a 17th-century Baroque-style fountain in the centre. Placa Major is home to several cafes and restaurants so it’s a great place to stop for a coffee or lunch, enjoy the sunshine at an outdoor table, and watch the world go by.

Church of Nostra Senyora dels Àngels (Our Lady of Angels)

Located on the western corner of Placa Major, Nostra Senyora dels Àngels is an iconic church founded by the Knights Templar and dedicated to the town’s patron saint, the Virgin Mary. This Gothic-style church has a fairly austere façade, but the inside is stunning, with a gorgeous rose window and an ornate altarpiece.

When I visited, the sun was shining through the rose window and lighting up the wall in a spectacular kaleidoscope of colours that is still one of the most magnificent things I’ve seen in any church.

The image below was a winner in the Historic Photographer of the Year competition 2022.

The Calvari Steps

The other most famous landmark in Pollensa is the Calvari Steps, or Escalíns del Calvari. Consisting of 365 stone steps, this steep staircase leads to a small chapel perched at the top of a hill. The climb is often done as an act of pilgrimage by religious visitors who come to recreate the journey Christ took on his way to the Crucifixion. Along the way, visitors can pause to contemplate the Stations of the Cross, depicted in small shrines.

You can either walk up and down the steps, or for a slightly easier ascent you can walk up the Carrer Sense Nom road that leads up to the chapel. On the way up you’ll pass the Mirador del Calvari viewpoint which offers gorgeous views out over the town and the surrounding landscape.

Then when it’s time to head back down, you can return via the steps – which will obviously be easier going downhill!

Convent of Santo Domingo

Founded in the 16th century by Dominican friars, this beautifully preserved convent features fabulous Gothic architecture, a serene cloister built in 1660, and an elegant chapel. Today, the Convente de Santo Domingo is also home to the Pollensa Museum.

Pollensa Museum

The Pollensa Museum showcases a diverse collection of art, archaeology, and historical artifacts relating to the history of Pollensa and some of the artists who have visited and worked there.

Exhibits feature everything from prehistoric artifacts – including a fascinating display about the Can Martorellet burial cave, which dates back to 1770 BC. There’s also a stunning Buddhist mandala, which was created from coloured sand by three Buddhist monks who worked solidly for three weeks to make it.

Juan Marc Gardens

The Jardines de Juan Marc, or Juan Marc Gardens, can be found directly across from the Museum. Named after Juan Marc, a local horticulturist, the gardens showcase a harmonious blend of Mediterranean and exotic plant species, creating a relaxing place to sit and enjoy an ice cream after your time in the museum.

Pollentia Ruins

Located just outside the town, this is considered the most complete archaeological site in Mallorca. The Roman town of Pollentia was founded in 70BC and at one time was the capital of the island. Today you can still see the theatre, forum, and residential areas. Entry costs a bargainous three euros. Note that the ruins are closed on Mondays.

Puig de Maria

Puig de Maria (Mary’s Hill) is a scenic hill located just outside Pollensa. Rising approximately 330 metres (1,083 feet) above sea level, it offers panoramic vistas of the surrounding countryside, the Bay of Pollensa, and the Tramuntana Mountains.

The hill is crowned by a small monastery and chapel, Santuari de la Mare de Déu del Puig, which dates back to the 14th century. Today it’s home to a small restaurant serving traditional Mallorquian cuisine.

It’s a relatively easy walk up – the path is about 2 km long and it takes about 45 minutes to reach the top.

Old Roman Bridge (El Pont Romà)

As the name suggests, this historic bridge is said to date back to the Roman era, though there’s no record of its existence before the 14 th century. Still, it’s a very scenic spot, great for a photograph or to enjoy the rushing sounds of the Torrent de Sant Jordi river which passes underneath. You’ll find the bridge just outside the town, about 700 meters from the centre of Pollensa.

Water fountains

As you walk around Pollensa, one other fun thing to spot are the many ornate water fountains. Dating back centuries, these fountains were vital sources of freshwater for residents and their livestock. During the Moorish rule of the island, many fountains were built or enhanced with intricate designs, reflecting their significance in daily life.

With the Christian reconquest in the 13th century, these fountains remained essential, serving as community hubs for gatherings and social interaction. Over time, some fountains became more ornate, adorned with carvings and decorative elements.

Keep your eyes peeled for quirky water fountains as you wander around Pollença

If you choose to hire a car from Mallorca airport for your trip to Puerto Pollensa then you just need to work your route out.

  • First, exit the airport following the signs for Palma and join the Ma-19 to Palma de Mallorca city. If you had to get a shuttle bus to collect your hire car at the east of the airport then you will join the main highway by the gas station, which is just one junction farther.
  • Continue on the Ma-19 for approximately 4.3 km, 3 minutes, until junction 3 and take the Ma-20 road signposted Alcudia.
  • Stay on the Ma-20 for around 2 minutes, 2.6 km, until junction 3 and take the Ma-13 signposted Port d’Alcudia. This junction is also signed at one point as junction 3B.
  • Once on the Ma-13 stay on this road for around 39 km then exit at junction 40 signposted Sa Pobla and Pollensa. This is the point where the motorway ends but just before the road turns to a single track carriageway.
  • At the roundabout take the exit on the left following the signs for Pollensa and join the Ma-2200. When you come to Pollenca, don’t go into Pollensa but stay on the same main road the Ma-2200. From here follow the signs for Port de Pollensa until you arrive.

travel palma to pollensa

My entire family have long had a love affair with Mallorca, which started when we went on our first holiday there. Roll forward 25 years to today and our connection with the island is still as strong as it was then when we first went.

Now there is more to Mallorca than initially meets the eye, infamous for its resorts in the south, Magaluf and Palma Nova, there is actually far more to this petite island than you might think. If you head out of the capital, Palma, and drive north you hit a far more relaxed pace of life, that has been influenced less by mass tourism and retains a more traditional pace.

Where To Go In North Mallorca

The north of the island is made up of a few smaller towns with the main area being Pollensa, Puerto Pollensa and Alcudia. Clustered around Puerto Pollensa is the tiny town of Cala San Vicente a beautiful little port area and Formentor a stunning coastal retreat which you access by sea and a very steep mountain road.

But back to Puerto Pollensa; It really is one of my favourite places on earth; it’s relaxed, cosmopolitan and very very pretty. Don’t visit it if you are looking for a wild night out as you won’t find it.

The town is overlooked by the Tramuntana Mountains and organised around a horseshoe bay. Travel left of the bay and you will eventually reach Formentor and travel right and you will eventually reach Alcudia.

The Pine Walk

2694450681_7ed807b67f_z

Arguably the prettiest part of the town is the Pine Walk. It’s a small pedestrian area that follows the beach along to the Illa d’Or Hotel . The beach is narrow and will fill up in the summer months, but it is never noisy or too busy. Take a towel and get a drink from one of the local bars and you can while away many an hour.

2694442553_49c59d525a_z

The town is packed full of bars and restaurants, so you are not short of places to eat. In the evening start the night out with a drink in the church square where the locals like a drink and head along the the promenade and have dinner in one of the many restaurants that line that walkway. After that head to the lanes near the marina for a night cap or walk along the Pine Walk to the Illa d’Or bar of the beach bar at the Hostal Bahia .

2694206882_18322ba440_z

Puerto Pollensa has a nice mix of accommodation options. If you are looking for an apartment or a villa then the Pine Walk is the place to be. If you are looking for hotel accommodation the there are several around the promenade I like – Sis Pins and the Miramar  and of course the Illa d’Or.

Out of Town

2694463085_0268227860_z

Puerto Pollensa is perfectly situated for small day trips. Each Sunday the old town of Pollensa, which is 7km inland from the port comes alive for the weekly market. This is local shopping on a big scale, farmers and growers from across the island come together to sell their goods. This ranges from fresh fruit and vegetables, amazing flowers and handmade products. You need a good morning to see the whole market and the old medieval lanes of the town. Get a lunch in the local square and if you have the energy try climbing the 365 Calvari steps to the church at the top of the hillside.

Learn about the best luxury hotels in Mallorca

2695257148_c760866320_z

Another stunning place is Formentor to the west of Puerto Pollensa which can be reached by land and boat. My advice would be to go in one way and out the other. There is a public bus which navigates across the very steep mountains and down in what is a breathtaking and slightly scary journey, but well worth the experience. Formentor is largely unspoilt and has a fantastic small beach and crystal blue waters to swim in. It is also home to the Barcelo Formentor 5 star hotel which is where Agatha Christie wrote her novel problem at Pollensa Bay.

Read our guide to a weekend break in Palma

2694468279_f2bf357cb5_z

Alcudia to the east of Puerto Pollensa is a larger resort. I would not waste time visiting the new area, head straight or the old part of the town and you will be rewarded with a 14th century walled town, full of lanes with boutique shops, cafes and bars. The Romans settles in Alcudia and you will find many historical landmarks in the town that you can explore too.

Cala San Vicente

2694478397_2abdd63f5a_z

On the bay opposite Puerto Pollensa is Cala San Vicente. This is a tiny village built around a cove with a lovely beach. You can get to the village by bus and taxi or if you are feeling energetic you can walk across the mountain range to it, which will take about two hours and it quite a gentle walk.

Other Information

Getting to Puerto Pollensa is quite easy. British Airways, Jet2, Easyjet and KLM all fly into the island. Once you arrive in Palma it is very easy to either hire a car ( Europcar at the airport) or pay for a prebooked airport transfer which will take you direct to Puerto Pollensa.

Majorca Road Trip – Palma to Pollensa by Car

Majorca Road Trip – Palma to Pollensa by Car

From Palma on the South part of the island we drove through the centre of Mallorca. Right up to the lighthouse at Cap de Formentor.  This circular route was a perfect way to discover all that this mediterranean island in detail.

travel palma to pollensa

Majorca Island Road trip

Eager to leave the airport behind and start to explore we headed onto the motorway towards to the capital, Palma de Mallorca. The plan was to visit Mallorca Cathedral and the historic old town. Driving from the airport along the motorway was simple and it was a short drive into the centre of Palma.

Just a quick jourmey of 10 kms (about 7 miles) and we were already there.

Palma de Mallorca Cathedral Majorca

Historic centre of Palma

Walking around the centre of Palma de Mallorca was quieter than I´d expected. The cathedral and Almudaina palace (above) have great views out to sea. The Cathedral called La Seu has one of the highest naves of all Gothic cathedrals. Its 44 metres high (144 ft) and the 8th in the world.Built on the site of an arab mosque and completed in 1601.

I would recommend seeing this at sunset. The view of the Cathedral´s gothic silohuette along the coastline as the sun goes down is pretty special. Another important historic site is Bellver Castle, which I didnt get to see on this trip. But its unique circular structure is well worth the jaunt up the hill.

Majorca Palma de Mallorca city

Palacio Real de La Almudaina

The Royal palace of the Almudaina was once an Arabic fortress and the Alcazaba of Mallorca. It was later chosen as a Royal palace in 14th century. Still today the upper floor, is used by the Spanish Royal Family for official engagements. It is decorated with objects and furniture from 17th and 18th centuries.

Majorcan Pearls

Shopping in Palma

We continued our wandering along the quaint historic streets behind the Cathedral. This is a great place to do some window shopping. There are plenty of Spanish shoe brands selling local names such as Som Mits, Camper or Carmina.

Then of course there are the famous Mallorca pearls too. The most well known are Majorica , a local company which has been trading since 1890. This process of making pearls involves a long coating process which achieves a similar finish to natural pearls. (far superior to plastic beads)

Salt in Mallorca Gourmet shop

There are also lots of little gourmet stores selling local pastries such as the Ensaimada or delicious food items like sobresada. Cosmetics made on the island with natural ingredients. Soaps made with local fruit, scrubs made with salt from Es trenc or olive oil based creams are also good quality.

After spending some time in the historic parts of Palma we hit the road towards the north of the island.

Majorca Road Trip Car Rental

Cap de Formentor

Heading direction Alcudia I decided we would drive up to the Cap de Formentor to enjoy the dramatic scenery and views. These roads were clearly designed for Mountain goats and bikes. On the way it is very curvy, steep mountain roads packed with cyclists, training in the mild weather. Not an easy drive as occasionally we´d cross a large tour bus and wide 4×4.

Majorca Road trip

Sierra de Tramutana

The drive was worth it for the stunning views and beautiful landscapes. Seeing a mountain goat with two kids jumping out right out in front of us was a lovely thing to see. This road is part of the Sierra de Tramutana named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011.

Along this road there are few places to stop and some of the car parks do get busy. We managed to stop at the Cap de Formentor and at Punta de la Nao. On the day we visited it was really sunny (suncream and hats required) but there are days when it is really windy. Take care up there.

Mallorca Road Trip

Car Hire Majorca

On arrival I found Car Hire Palma Majorca airport easily in the arrivals terminal.  I´d requested a compact car as it was just for 48h on the island. We only had two small suitcases so something small would be fine.

As I am used to visting cities around Spain, parking bigger cars can be tricky, especially in the old towns.  It´s always useful to have  the GPS system too.

Palma de Mallorca Food

What to Eat in Mallorca

Typical foods on the island are sobresada as I mentioned. This is a salami like sausage, however it´s soft and spreadable. It makes a good sandwich with melted cheese. Typical pastries in Mallorca are pasty style Cremadillos. They have a custard like filling. Also the omnipresent Ensaimada with its characteristic shape.

Majorca Ensaimada pastries

Ensaimadas can be plain or filled with sweet pumpkin paste, called Cabello de Angel (angel´s hair). They come in these typical flat boxes and you´ll see the plane home packed with them.

Local Mallorcan Food

Other typical dishes are Tumbet or Coca de Trampó . Tumbet can be served with fish or meat. It´s a vegetable dish made with tomatoes peppers and aubergines. Coca is a flatbread very typical in Catalonia. On Mallorca they serve it with trampo which is a vegetable topping with diced tomatoes peppers and onion.

In Palma de Mallorca you can see all the local produce at Santa Catalina market  (plaza de la Navegación). Its open everyday except Sunday from 7am to 5pm.

Majorca Salt flats salines Es trenc

Port de Pollensa

With sheer drops and 300m cliffs above the sea, this road is not for those scared of heights. From Port de Pollensa to the Cap de Formentor the route is 10 miles long (16 kms). Yet it takes around 40 minutes to drive (depending on time of year and number of buses/cyclists).

It can be dangerous in places to pass the cyclists. Roads ono this part of the island are just wide enough for two cars. Be very careful and drive slowly. Driving along past Port de Pollensa an impeccable beach town with it´s own marina. The beach was enormous and there are lots of restaurants and facilities here.

Historic Alcudia Majorca

However I headed directly to the old town of Alcudia. The tourist areas of Port d’Alcúdia and Platja d’Alcúdia. Its here where hotels and most popular beaches are located, but I was interested in visiting the old town of Alcudia for it´s historic monuments.

Alcudia Majorca

Alcudia Old Town

Surrounded by a 14th century city wall, this roman settlement has a quaint feel to its streets and squares. Inhabited since the Bronze age its no surprise that it has plenty of ancient ruins and relics.

There are also plenty of traditional restaurants and bars tucked into the different corners of the town. As well as the old city walls and historic Church of St James, many other notable buildings that give Alucdia a certain charm. The local market is held on Tuesdays and Sundays making it a great location to escape from the busier tourist centres nearby.

After driving around Palma de Mallorca, Satorre, Llucmajor , Pollensa, Alcudia and Cap de Formentor. We made the most of our weekend break.

So it was back off to the airport to delivery the car in time to get the plane home. When I rent a car I am always careful to check all the compartments to make sure I don´t leave anything behind (jacket, sunglasses, etc)

There is 2 of us travelling to Pollensa in June and i wanted to know the easiest way to get from the airport and back without having to get a taxi as i understand they are very expensive - can anyone help and let me know the costs involved if known? Can you get a coach, train etc which are reliable ?

' class=

I don't think Palma airport taxis are particularly expensive but it's a long way and would normally form part of your accommodation planning. Puerto Pollensa is a little further than Pollensa.

travel palma to pollensa

Someone like Resort Hoppa (who are an agent for the local transfer company called Transunion, but Hoppa will be cheaper and have a better web site) run shared transfers 24/7 and are really cheap (about £13 each way).

You do run the risk of it being a long transfer or even a wait at the airport for it's scheduled leaving time, but you do have the advantage of Puerto Pollensa being one of the earlier drop off points (Alcudia being after it).

I often do Hoppa from the airport, then hire a car for the way back and take in some scenary on the way home i.e. try visit somewhere else.

I used Trans Union and they seem to be largest operator with many buses and slick. Exit from airport and go to the desk with your details . Book online at least 3 days ahead. Refer

Other options -

(1) A pre-booked private transfer for just 2 people would cost 80 euros one way; and would be a few euros cheaper than taxi from the rank at the airport. Easiest, quickest at about 50 mins, door-to-door; but - most expensive.

(2) Public bus into centre of Palma and then change to the (approx hourly) public bus to Pollensa & Puerto Pollensa. Overall approx 90-120 mins airport to P P/P dependent on how interconnection timings work out in central Palma Cheapest.

(3) Aerotib public bus direct from the Airport (between 1 and 1.5 hours between buses; see link below) straight to Alcudia. From there you could take a taxi for the few miles to your final destination or another bus on the Puerto Pollensa/Pollensa route.

Bus timetables vary a lot with time of year, so check previous timetables in the above link..

We are going in September and the best deal is with Hoppa.com on a coach 2 persons 27.78.

we are going tp Pollencia at beginning of October. How reliable and regular is the Hoppa shuttle from Palma airport? Is rebooking essential?

' class=

Just get a taxi at the airport , no hassle .
