Memorial KZ-Mauthausen Tour

NOW ONLY! Adults 83,00€ instead of 93,00€

From 1938 to 1945, the Mauthausen Concentration Camp was at the centre of a system of over 40 subcamps and was the main site of political, social, racist and anti-Semitic persecution by the National Socialist regime on Austrian territory. Of a total of around 190,000 people imprisoned here, at least 90,000 were murdered.

The task of the Mauthausen Memorial is to ensure public awareness of the history of the Mauthausen Concentration Camp and its subcamps, the memory of its victims, and the responsibility borne by the perpetrators and onlookers. At the same time it promotes public critical engagement with this history in the context of its significance for the present and future. Therefore it researches and documents the history of the Mauthausen Concentration Camp and its sub-camps, and empowers its visitors through exhibitions and educational programmes to deal with the history of concentration camps.

It aims at pointing out comparable present day developments, tendencies and processes and to raise levels of awareness, in particular surrounding issues such as the reactivation of National Socialist ideology, anti-Semitism, racism, minority discrimination and anti-democratic activities.

Thus, the Mauthausen Concentration Camp Memorial is a former crime scene, a memorial site, a cemetery for thousands of people murdered here and a place of historical-political education.

Tour procedure:

From Vienna, a certified guide will accompany you to Mauthausen and explain the most important information about Austrian history and the Second World War on the way to the memorial. On site, pedagogically trained mediators of the memorial take care of the participants.

The tour will be held in English and will take place mostly outdoors. Please come dressed according to the weather.

Bus tours to the Mauthausen Concentration Camp Memorial will take place every Sunday from March 23, 2024.

Drinks and snacks will be available for purchase at the bistro of the Memorial.

The minimum age is 14 years. Younger children cannot participate.

We ask for your understanding that visiting the Mauthausen Concentration Camp Memorial with dogs and other animals is not permitted.

Mauthausen Concentration Camp Introduction

Mauthausen introduction.

Mauthausen Map – Home | Introduction | Credits

Mauthausen Rock Quarry

On August 8, 1938, just a few weeks after the Nazi occupation of Austria, prisoners from the Dachau, concentration camp near Munich, were transferred to the Austrian town of Mauthausen, near Linz.

mau-stairs02

They were brought to the rock quarry there, known as the “Wiener Graben”, where they began to build the granite fortress-prison of the main camp, mostly with their blood, bodies, bare hands and backs. It was known as the “mother camp” for all of Austria, comprising some 49 sub-camps.

Between Aug. 8, 1938 and May 5, 1945, about 195, 000 persons, men and women, were forced into these camps.

Most of the people were imprisoned under the Nazi “protective custody” laws, that is, they were consider dangerous to the Third Reich of Germany and Austria, and therefore, these two nations, now joined, had to be “protected” from these people because of their racial origin, nationality, political affiliation or religious belief.

It should be noted that Austria contributed more volunteers for the SS, per capita , than did Germany.

The Mauthausen camp was one of the most infamous in the entire Nazi alternate universe of human destruction. Many people, most of whom were innocent of any crimes, were tortured to death in its rock quarry, and in the tunnels of Mauthausen-Gusen, the most infamous of the sub-camps.

The policy of death through work was instituted by Chief of SS, Reichsfuhrer Heinrich Himmler. Prisoners were to be given only the most primitive tools, and also, whenever possible, they were to work with their bare hands.

This policy was known as “Primitivbauweise”. In Mauthausen it resulted in a harsh, stone world, deprived of any human kindness and compassion.

It is there today still… sitting on a small mountain-top in the astonishingly beautiful and bucolic Austrian countryside, maintained by the Austrian government.

Reviews (201).

I went with my rather mature 11 year old son, and we found this tour to be very good. Our tour guide was wonderful, compassionate, and informative. While I understand this tour is not appropriate for younger kids, it was appropriate for my child and important history for us to learn.

Excellent trip great tour guide and bus driver. Very professionals and polite. The tour was very interesting and impressive. Something very amazing to never let us forget about the terrible things that happen there. If you have the opportunity this is your sign for it!

The bus was comfortable, the guide there was engaging, and the guide through the camp was outstanding. She had many thought provoking questions instead of just reciting facts. Well worth the trip.
