College Station is a city in Brazos County in Texas and is most famous for being the home of the Texas A&M University.

Due to the fact that the university has an emphasis on agriculture, students who attend are known as Aggies, and this has led to the university and College Station in general often being known as Aggieland.

Many of the sights here revolve around the university, and locals are hugely proud of their college traditions, many of which you can learn all about at one of the many museums situated around the campus.

Aside from museums, you will also find live music events, breweries, restaurants, memorials, and sporting venues all over Aggieland, and even if you are no longer at college yourself, it may be difficult not to get caught up in the student atmosphere of this vibrant city.

1. The George Bush Presidential Library and Museum

Located on the campus of Texas A&M University is the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum.

Dedicated to the 41st President of the United States, this is a museum with a difference as you can expect a whole range of interesting presidential props and memorabilia including a reconstruction of the Oval Office.

As if that wasn’t enough, there are artifacts such as the Presidential Limousine, as well as a whole host of other memorabilia related to the life and work of George H.W Bush.

You can even find gems such as a chunk of the Berlin Wall and a selection of gifts that were given to the President by visiting dignitaries when he was in office.

The trip here is worth it for the photos alone as you are allowed to sit in the presidential chair in the Oval Office and imagine the real thing.

There are also guided or audio tours throughout the library and museum available for those who want to learn all about the historical background of many of the pieces on display.

2. Research Park

Next to the Bush Library lies Research Park, and once you have visited the (replica) Oval Office, this grassy area makes a wonderful place for an afternoon stroll.

The park is surrounded by leafy College Station scenery and has a pond that is inhabited by many local ducks, and students here love nothing more than to come to the park with a blanket for a picnic to take in the sights in the late afternoon.

Certainly if you are already in the area to visit the library then you shouldn’t miss this serene and picturesque park.

3. Sanders Corps of Cadets Center

The Sam Houston Sanders Corps of Cadets Center is a museum that is situated on the campus of the Texas A&M University and is dedicated to informing visitors on all things related to the university’s Corps of Cadets.

The museum first opened in 1992 and to date has more than 60 exhibits that feature memorabilia relating to the Corps of Cadets.

There are also over 600 photographs located at the museum so if you want to know all about the history of the corps then this is the ideal place to come.

Aggieland is also a place that is steeped in tradition, and the exhibits at the center will explain all about some of Texas A&M’s most interesting traditions such as the 12th Man, the Silver Taps, and the Muster.

4. Messina Hof

Messina Hof is known for being College Station’s resident winery and is an ideal place to come to sip on a local vintage and enjoy the surrounding area.

The winery was founded in 1977 and is famous for its blends and visitors here can go on tours of the winery and tasting rooms to see how the wines are made from the moment the grapes are plucked from the vines until they make it into a finished bottle.

Aside from browsing in the vineyard itself, you can enjoy a tasting of the wines or you can also go and eat in their on-site restaurant which uses the wine in their signature dishes.

The wine tours on the property are open to everyone and last approximately an hour where guests can learn all about the history of wine making in College Station.

5. Northgate

Come to the Northgate area of College Station if you are looking for a good time, as it is here that you will find a strip of bars and nightlife hotspots.

Stretched along Northgate you will find restaurants and bars that keep the party going until the wee small hours, and you can try local Texas favorites here such as their famous barbecue or Tex Mex, a mix of American and Mexican flavors.

Many of the venues here have outside seating and live music so that in the warmer months you can enjoy some al-fresco dining and drinking.

6. Kyle Field

Many Aggies will tell you that a trip to College Station is not complete unless you make the visit to Kyle Field on the campus of Texas A&M University.

Kyle Field is the home field of the Texas A&M Aggie football team and was founded in 1904 and then officially completed in 1927. The stadium has a capacity of over 100,000 spectators which makes it one of the largest stadiums in the United States and it is certainly an impressive sight if you are in town and want to catch an all American football game whilst you are here.

Just outside the field you will also find the Reveille Mascot Cemetery which is the final resting place of the Aggie mascots, all Border collie dogs who were called Reveille.

When the mascot dies, it is buried outside Kyle Field but with a view of the scoreboard so that it can always watch the games, and the cemetery is a highly revered site in Aggieland.

7. Museum of the American GI

The Museum of the American GI was first opened in 2002 and is dedicated to educating guests all about those who have been in service in the United States.

To that end, the museum has a huge amount of military memorabilia including restored tanks, boats, and planes from the Second World War and the Vietnam War.

There are also static exhibitions that contain a wealth of other period artifacts such as letters, photographs, and other historical documents, and you will even find 3,417 dog tags on display to represent military personnel from Texas who were killed or declared missing during the Vietnam War.

8. Bonfire Memorial

The Aggie Bonfire was known for being a ritual that took place every time the football team at College Station played the University of Texas, and the tradition of having a bonfire was first started in 1909. In 1999 however the bonfire was incorrectly constructed and 12 people were killed as a result.

In its place a memorial has now been erected that features twelve stone arches, each one of which points towards the hometown of one of the victims.

Many visitors to College Station find that this is one of the most moving experiences that they have here, and the memorial is located in an area of parkland that makes it a serene spot to visit.

There are also tours of the memorial open to groups if you book advance where volunteers will explain all about the history of the bonfire and the tragic collapse in 1999.

9. Texas World Speedway

Come to Texas World Speedway if you want to practice your driving skills in the College Station area.

The speedway is known for being the only Super Speedway in the Southwest of the United States and was once called the ‘World’s Fastest Speedway’ after a world record was set here for the fastest lap time in 1973. Nowadays, there are open track days when you can get the chance to drive around yourself, or there are also classes that aspiring drivers can take in order to learn the ropes.

If you don’t want to drive then you can also attend the open track days as a spectator and watch the other drivers in action.

10. New Republic Brewing

If you want to have a few beers in College Station then you could do worse than go to New Republic Brewing, a craft beer brewery in the downtown area.

Founded in 2010, you can visit the brewery and have a tour of its famous taproom and you can also sample a range of the craft beers on sale here before choosing your favorite to take home.

Tours here are given by the founders of the brewery so you will get to hear all about the history and mission statement of New Republic Brewing straight from its creators.

At the weekends there are live music events held and a food truck from the local area provides some delicious local fare to go with the beer.

11. Dixie Chicken

If you fancy a bite to eat in College Station then look no further than the Dixie Chicken, something of a local legend in these parts.

The Dixie Chicken first open in the 1930s and has been serving up local favorites like fried chicken, burgers, and cheese fries ever since, and it is also the place to come for a domino game, a pool tournament, or to listen to some country music.

The Dixie Chicken is also famous for apparently being the place where the most beer was drunk in one night in the United States, so many visitors come here to see if the legend is true and have a few cold glasses themselves.

12. Brazos Valley Natural History Museum

Located in neighboring Bryan, the Brazos Valley Natural History Museum is known for being the only museum in the area to focus on natural history and with that in mind many visitors flock here as this is a great place to bring younger visitors.

The museum focuses on all things to do with plants, animals, and minerals in the Brazos Valley area and some of the key attractions that you can expect to find here include an observation bee hive, butterfly exhibits, and fifteen different species of live animals in the discovery room.

There are rotating as well as static exhibits throughout the year and other highlights include fossils, taxidermy specimens, and period agricultural equipment from the region.

13. Children’s Museum at Brazos Valley

Also located in neighboring Bryan, the Children’s Museum of the Brazos Valley has everything to keep little visitors entertained.

The museum has a huge range of attractions and is interactive in approach in order to make sure that guests get a ‘hand-on’ experience.

Some of the highlights of the museum include a space ship that little ones can climb as well as a replica H-E-B store, a model of a television station, and a construction site where younger visitors can use some of the play tools to make their own weird and wonderful machines and buildings.

There are also a range of games on display like a giant checkers board and there are other attractions dedicated to the animal kingdom that feature live animals such as Georgie’s Lily Pad where you can learn all about frogs.

14. Santa’s Wonderland

If you happen to be in College Station from November to January then you mustn’t miss the chance to get into the holiday spirit with a trip to Santa’s Wonderland.

Set up with everything you need to get you in the mood for Christmas, there is a holiday fair where you can buy Christmas related food products and snacks, or you can go for a communal hayride around the Santa’s Wonderland village.

Younger visitors can meet Santa himself and there are romantic horse and carriage rides that both young and old visitors are sure to enjoy.

There is also live music on offer and guests can crowd around one of the many cozy campfires that are lit at the wonderland in order to take in the festivities.

Needless to say there are also a huge number of retail booths set up for anyone looking to do some Christmas shopping.

15. Olsen Field

If you go to Kyle Field to take in a football game, then make sure that you also come to Olsen Field to catch a baseball game.

Opened in 1978, the stadium is steeped in history and has a capacity of over 6,000 spectators which led to it being voted the best baseball stadium in the United States in 2004 according to Sports Illustrated.

Museum of the American G.I.

The Museum of the American G.I. is dedicated to all soldiers who fought for us and the country. They’ve dedicated this space to educating people and preserving a number of military artifacts.

You’ll see World War II tanks, boats from the Vietnam era, and even planes outside the museum.

They even have an annual event called “Living History Museum,” where cannons are fired, weapons are fired, and you’ll see engines coming to life.

Inside, different exhibits have uniforms, equipment, photographs, and other memorabilia in their collection. A display you can’t miss is the Texas Vietnam Heroes exhibit. Here, you’ll see on display 3,417 dog tags of the Texan veterans who were killed or pronounced missing during the Vietnam War.

Children’s Museum of the Brazos Valley

A great indoor spot for the little ones is the Children’s Museum of the Brazos Valley, located in the neighboring city Bryan.

This natural history museum is one of the only one of its kind in the area. They are all about natural history and our respectful interaction with nature.

It’s in the neighboring city of Bryan, and it’s a perfect destination if you’re traveling with kids .

Aside from learning more about natural history, the museum also highlights plants, minerals, and animals that you’ll only find in the Brazos Valley.

Some highlights inside include their Discovery Room, where live animals are on display. There are also taxidermy displays here that could be a hit for the kids.

They also have Natural and Cultural exhibits all about the relationship between people and nature. If you’re interested, they also have the Boonville Heritage Park just outside the museum.

Santa’s Wonderland

Lick Creek Park

Lick Creek Park is just one of the many nature parks in College Station. It’s not the most popular park, so you’re sure to get some peace and even avoid the crowds.

The highlight of the park is the Lick Creek Nature Center. The nature center has native plant displays and a monarch butterfly garden, and they offer tours if you’re interested.

The park is also an excellent place for birdwatching and nature studies if you’d rather be out in nature. There’s a lot of flora and fauna in the park, even an endangered plant.

Lick Creek also has a five-mile walking and hiking trail and a bike trail that connects to Creek View Park.

Research Park

After a tour of the Bush Library, you can take a stroll through Research Park right beside the library. The 40-acre park is popular with tourists and students as well.

Being inside Texas A&M University, you’ll see many college students taking a break here. But who could blame them? The park is scenic and relaxing.

Lay down your blanket for a picnic or take a stroll through the interconnected ponds of the park. You can also do some outdoor recreation with their 18-hole disk golf course that welcomes people of all skill levels. There are also walking and running paths here.

Just beware of the ducks and turtles in the area! There are plenty of them here.

Messina Hof

There are many cool vineyards and breweries in Texas, and College Station doesn’t disappoint on this front. This vineyard is one of the local favorites and a must-try to anyone passing by the city.

There are constant tours that’ll take you backstage from when these are still grapes until they make a fine bottle of wine. Indulge yourself as well with their wine tasting and tasting room.

They have a lot of different blends, all set for different occasions, and you can take a sip while you’re there.

Northgate District

Northgate District is where the city comes alive after the sun comes down.

Bonfire Memorial

The Bonfire Memorial has a tragic story behind it that makes this outdoor sculpture even more meaningful.

A Texas bonfire tradition since 1909 led to an accident in 1999 where 12 people were killed. The bonfire was a ritual every time the College Station football team had a game with the University of Texas.

The 12 stone arches you see in the Bonfire Memorial today represent each one of the victims. Each of the structures faces the victim’s hometown.

It’s a sad story to hear, and you’ll learn more about its history with a tour of the memorial.

If you like football, there is no better place to watch a game than in Kyle Field.

It’s been renovated a couple of times, but it’s now one of the biggest stadiums in the state with over 100,000-spectator capacity. The football field is the home of the Texas A&M football team, and you’ll find it inside the campus.

It’s an impressive stadium, and definitely, somewhere you should visit if watching football is your thing.

Benjamin Knox Gallery and Wine Depot

If you’re expecting wine and art judging by the name, then you would be right. The Benjamin Knox Gallery and Wine Depot is a huge art gallery in College Station and one of the largest in Texas.

Their collection revolves around Benjamin Knox’s works, but you can also explore other artists here.

The gallery is located in the historic College Station train depot where the city got its name. There are two buildings in the complex, the College Station train depot and the Bluebonnet Gallery.

You’ll also find the beer and other spirits on The Wine Bar on-site.

Dixie Chicken

You can’t leave College Station without trying Dixie Chicken. It’s considered a local legend in the city and located in the Northgate District.

Most people know that College Station is home to Texas A&M University, but the city is also one of the best places in Texas to dine, sightsee, shop, relax, and learn a bit about world history. Yes — all that surprised me, too! Though Aggieland is the city’s baby, College Station is much more than a college town — it offers a variety of attractions and unique experiences for people of all ages. It’s also known for its friendliness: You’ll be greeted with an enthusiastic “Howdy!” wherever you go. The residents are always willing to lend a hand or offer their recommendations. 

College Station is about 95 miles from Houston and roughly a 3-hour drive from Dallas . Whether you’re looking for things to do on a weekend getaway or checking out the university for your future college student, College Station is in full swing. Here are several attractions and experiences in the city that you should consider.

Things To Do In College Station

In College Station, not only can you get creative with your hands, eat delicious food, shop at some nice boutiques, and stay in a quaint hotel, but you can take self-guided tours of several attractions to learn more about world history. As I was planning my trip, I realized that one of my favorite Sunday-morning shows has a store in College Station, so I made The Texas Bucket List my first stop and the King Ranch Saddle Shop my second stop. While I was there, I learned that President George H. W. Bush, Barbara Bush, and their oldest daughter are all buried in College Station. I had a surreal visit and was in awe practically the whole time I was there.

Visit The George H. W. Bush Presidential Library And Museum

Although the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum was closed when I was there, we did walk the grounds, where we saw a piece of the Berlin Wall, the gravesites of the former president and his wife, and a beautifully manicured lawn with gorgeous blooming flowers. That alone made my heart happy.

Pay Your Respects At The Veterans Park & Athletic Complex

The designers of the Veterans Park & Athletic Complex originally envisioned a space where families could come out to enjoy picnics, baseball games, and playgrounds. But they later realized it would be the perfect outdoor site to dedicate to veterans of our nation’s major wars. Today, the Brazos Valley Veterans Memorial is one of America’s finest collections of war memorials. You’ll see life-size statues, a Wall of Honor, interpretive panels, and memorial sites here.

You can visit for free to catch a baseball game and take a tour of the Brazos Valley Veterans Memorial. Quite honestly, I knew very little about the wars that went on in our day, and I felt a bit overwhelmed as a long-time resident of College Station took us around, talked about the wars, and described every statue out there, even Rosie the Riveter. It was a surreal moment for me. I might have shed a tear or two. I can’t wait to go back and see the 9/11 Memorial they are working on.

Pro Tip : The paved trails around the memorial are great for running or walking your dog. There are plenty of benches along the trail, and there are restrooms on-site.

Stroll Through The Gardens At Texas A&M University

A public garden with more than 7 acres of gorgeous seasonal flowers, an abundance of greenery, and a little river running through it, The Gardens at Texas A&M University offers quite the space to enjoy some fresh air and nature. Bring a picnic to enjoy. While perusing the website, be sure to look for special events happening throughout the year. Admission is always free, and parking is free on weekends.

Shop And Spa In Century Square

Just outside of Cavalry Court at Century Square, where I stayed, is a world of shopping. The popular King Ranch Saddle Shop makes its home in the square, as does the Galleria Spa Salon Boutique , voted the best day spa in the Brazos Valley for 16 consecutive years. You’ll also find Lucchese Boots and many other upscale shops and boutiques.

Stop To Smell The Flowers At Basecamp Farms

Just outside of College Station is an outdoor venue where you can cut your own flowers, explore a flower shop, take a tour, and sign up for a photography session among the big, beautiful sunflowers the farm is known for. You can even try your hand at making your own dried flower wreath. Basecamp Farms is a place to unwind, feel the grass between your toes, and take in the sunshine.

Explore Lick Creek Park

If you’re a nature buff, Lick Creek Park is the place to wander. Its nature center is a 2,400-square-foot facility with meeting rooms, outdoor classrooms, an amphitheater, native plant displays, and a monarch butterfly garden. You’ll enjoy nature to the fullest on the park’s paved and natural trails, watching for resident birds, butterflies, and snakes. 

Experience The Northgate Entertainment District

If nightlife is more your style, then check out the Northgate Entertainment District . When the evening rolls around, this area is hopping with eclectic venues. Head to the world-famous Dixie Chicken , the oldest bar in town, and Bottle Cap Alley , where kids and adults alike can throw their caps on the ground. Where else could you do that and not get in trouble?

Restaurants In College Station

In addition to coffee at Stella Southern Cafe , lunch at C&J Barbeque , dinner at Solt , and drinks at The Canteen Bar & Grill , I recommend these restaurants in College Station.

1860 Italia

1860 Italia is a great place for oven-fired pizza, but also for bruschetta and grilled salmon with lemon and herbs, which is what I had. I could have had it the very next day as well — it was that delicious! If dessert is in order, plan to share the biggest piece of chocolate cake known to man. The four of us could not finish it! One lucky wife got to enjoy the rest.

The Republic Steakhouse

Steak, wine, and whiskey — take your pick, or go for all three! The Republic Steakhouse is open for dinner, and reservations are highly recommended. I also highly recommend the oysters, a glass of wine, and then steak if you’re looking for a nice meat meal.

Sal’s Garpez

I always want to eat where the locals do. Sal’s Garpez is one of those spots. It’s a local dive inside a gas station serving authentic Mexican food: breakfast tacos. Dine in or take yours to go; either way, you’ll have to wait — it’s that good. Look for the Shell at Highway 6 and Harvey Road. 

Primrose Path Wine Bar

Primrose Path Wine Bar is a quaint place to go for lunch or dinner in a pretty setting. Get ready to be dazzled by the charm and by the beautiful chandelier hanging over the bar. You’ll enjoy the complete wine list, whiskey list, and artisan cheeses and charcuterie trays.

Gate 12 Bar & Grill

Gate 12 Bar & Grill offers great food and an amazing view of the planes taking off and landing at College Station’s only airport. When we were there, we saw at least 10 planes coming in for a landing. The chocolate cake was divine. Ask for spoons for the whole party and share it — it’s rich!

Hotels In College Station

While College Station offers the usual chain hotels, it also has some of the best boutique hotels I’ve ever run across. It may be tough to reserve a room for a time when a big event is going on, so if you’re planning a visit, book early. 

Cavalry Court

Cavalry Court , an urban resort with a relaxed vibe and luxury amenities, is located in Century Square. You can splash in the pool, play in the courtyard, have a bite to eat in the adjacent Canteen Bar & Grill, and walk to the shops. A laid-back and fun scene is what you’ll find at Cavalry Court, where I was hosted. Relax on the patio while sipping handcrafted toddies from the bar, and enjoy live music on Friday and Saturday nights. You’ll also find complimentary bikes to ride.

The George , a one-of-a-kind boutique hotel where luxury meets rusticity, is directly across from Cavalry Court. In the lobby, there’s a wall of books arranged to look like the Texas flag. You’ll enjoy the finest of things here, and you can even shop for luxury items in the gift shop.

Vineyard Court

In the heart of College Station, Vineyard Court , a much-loved boutique hotel, can house you and your entire family in one of their designer suites fit for a king. They are the only College Station hotel with a dog park, and all dogs stay for free.

Pro Tip: You won’t meet a stranger in College Station. If you need guidance, just ask, and you’ll get your answer and then some!

Celebrate the new visitor center at 1207 texas with the hometown tailgate event on saturday.

Visit College Station invites you to the grand opening of its new Visitor Center and event space from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday at 1207 Texas Ave . The inaugural hometown tailgate also heralds the start of football season in Aggieland , with Texas A&M taking on the New Mexico Lobos at 6 p.m. at Kyle Field.  

The kickoff event features food, beverages, music, games, and an opportunity to shop our new and exclusive merchandise. The grand opening starts with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony led by the B/CS Chamber of Commerce.  

The community tailgate is also a fantastic opportunity to take photos at the already-popular “I Heart Aggieland” sign across the city hall lawn.   The renovated building’s history dates to 1970, when it was constructed as College Station’s first fire station and housed the Police Department. In 1976, the CSPD moved to South Texas Avenue, but the fire station remained in service until 1997.

The city’s Community Services, Human Resources, and Facilities Maintenance departments later occupied the building. In early 2022, construction began to convert the building into offices for the Economic Development and Tourism Department and a visitor center and event space for Visit College Station.  

What once served as the home of fire engines is now our premier venue for community and tourism-related activities and events!

The Best College Station Day Trips in Under 1 Hour

Bryan may be practically melded to College Station, but it still makes for a fun trip away from campus!

The historic downtown Bryan is home to a variety of shops and restaurants that have been enjoyed for generations.

Whether you are looking to visit its farmer’s markets and antique shops or want a place to unwind after an Aggie football game, this gorgeous, brick-paved strip has so much to offer.  

Start your day with a journey into The Bird’s Nest antique store that will spark some imagination in any vintage collector.

For a fun dining experience, take a seat at Proudest Monkey or RX Pizza and Bar–two of the area’s most unique establishments.   

If you’re looking for a place to cool off during a hot summer afternoon, take the short drive over to Lake Bryan.

With its various hiking trails and canoe ramps, this adventure will be full of enjoyable and cost-effective activities.   

Driving Distance From College Station

Navasota + Washington-on-the-Brazos

Home to some of the greatest art in the area, a quick trip to Navasota, TX will be well worth your drive.

Also known as the Blues Capital of Texas, each door you walk through in this beautiful town only exemplifies its historic past.  

Known for its unique trinkets and antiques, possibly take your first stop into Bluebonnet Vintage Collectibles.

Navasota is also easily combined with a trip to the historic Washington-on-the-Brazos, one of the best historical sites in Texas and the place where Texas began!

Located just a short, scenic drive from College Station, the charming city of Brenham has numerous activities to occupy your day trip itinerary.

The Best Day Trips from College Station in Less than 2 Hours

With a population of only 90 people, this little town is home to some of Texas’ most unique attractions.  

Round Top is primarily known for its famous (and gigantic) Texas antique shows , but even outside of fair days, you’ll find plenty of things to see and antiques to peruse in town.

Begin your day with a stop by the Round Top Coffee Shop for the best latte in a quaint cafe.

Take a stroll around Heritage Square to see some of the most authentic merchandise that is handmade by the town’s locals.

To top off your trip, take a seat in Royers Cafe for a dining experience that will take you down the town’s memory lane.

With its rich history and incomparable terrain, La Grange is the perfect destination if you’re looking to see a storybook town.   

Check out the area’s numerous vintage shops before swinging by Blissful Folly Farm for a yummy bite to eat (or select from their length wine list!).

Home to authentic merchandise and yummy food-truck cuisine, one is sure to have a blast while walking through this 26,000 square foot property.   

After a tour through the unique Dr. Pepper Museum or the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, grab a seat at Cafe Homestead for one of the city’s most unique dining experiences.

Day Trips More Than 2 Hours From College Station

With some of the most diverse establishments in Texas, downtown Austin is the perfect day trip from College Station if you’re looking to see all that the state’s capital has to offer.  

A stroll down South Congress is sure to show you some of the city’s most famous attractions.

Similarly, a walk through the Zilker Metropolitan Park and Botanical Gardens is the perfect spot for some outdoor relaxation and photo opportunities.  

For some authentic restaurants and nightlife locations, take your pick of one of the many bars and clubs down 6th Street.

Layered with unique cuisine and live music from local bands, this area of downtown Austin is sure to immerse you in the city’s culture.  

San Antonio  

Home to some of South Texas’ richest culture, a visit to San Antonio makes for a long day in the car, but is still one of the best day trips from College Station.

Begin your day by taking a tour of some of the city’s greatest museums and national monuments, such as the Alamo or Tower of Americas.

The San Fernando Cathedral and the less-visited San Antonio Missions like Mission San Jose are also among the best attractions in San Antonio.

Be sure to stop by the Riverwalk, a miles-long stretch of shops and restaurants aligning the San Antonio River.

Finally, top off your day with a meal at Mi Tierra’s Cafe and Bakery.  

2 hours, 45 minutes.

As part of one of the largest metropolitan areas of North Texas, Fort Worth is the ideal spot for a family adventure.   

With plenty to do in a fairly compact area for a city of its size, Fort Worth makes for a fun road trip from College Station.

The city is known for its Stockyards, a large historic district with some incredible shops and BBQ restaurants.

Take a bike tour through the strip to see all the sights, or even stop by the famous Billy Bob’s Honky Tonk for a true Texas dance hall experience.   

2 hours, 40 minutes.

Nacogdoches

Nacogdoches, one of the first established towns of Texas, is full of unique attractions and places to discover.  

With numerous shops and cafes to choose from, the historic, brick-paved downtown district is a can’t miss stop.

If you’re feeling a bite to eat, be sure to check out Clear Springs Restaurant for some authentic seafood.   

Take a walk through the Azalea Gardens for some bird watching and hiking excursions.  

For history buffs, a visit to the Stone Fort Museum will give a peek into Texas in the 18th century.

Report: former auburn wr ja’varrius johnson will visit texas a&m next month, share this article.

Credit to Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko, as the program is clearly headed in the right direction under his leadership this offseason. Most notably, Elko’s utilization of the spring transfer portal has led to several commitments this month, including former Pitt linebacker Solomon DeShields.

Needing to add another wide receiver after the Maroon & White spring game showed that depth issues persist in the rotation; former Penn State WR KeAndre Lambert-Smith , who was a finalist to land with the Aggies, is now headed to Auburn.

Exciting news is on the horizon: Elko has reportedly arranged a visit next week with former Auburn WR Ja’Varrius Johnson. Johnson recorded 64 receptions, 1,114 receiving yards, and three touchdowns during his Tigers career. Johnson could be a game-changer for the Aggies.

Post-tribune | high school students explore health careers at ivy tech in valpo, portage, chesterton and washington township students participate.

Students from Portage, Chesterton and Washington Township high schools got a better sense of healthcare career opportunities during a visit to Ivy Tech Community College’s Valparaiso campus on Wednesday.

The Healthcare 360 program was organized by Portage Economic Development Corp. Ivy Tech Chancellor Aco Sikoski, a board member, said the economic development agency and Ivy Tech also partner in programs for manufacturing and construction careers.

“We are excited to show the high school students in our service area, juniors and seniors, the programs in this area,” he said.

Not only do the students get to see Ivy Tech’s programs and state-of-the-art facilities but also what various jobs are likely to pay and how affordable the training required for them will be, Sikoski said.

Andy Maletta, executive director of Portage Economic Development Corp., said the program began six or seven years ago with tours of area hospitals as well as Ivy Tech. The COVID-19 pandemic changed things. Now the full day is spent at Ivy Tech. “Actually, it’s worked out better because kids get to see more,” he said, rather than spending so much time on the bus from one location to another.

Portage students have been participating all along, but Maletta’s agency decided to invite other schools to participate. “It’s a program we’re proud of. We brag about it all the time,” he said.

“I think it’s a very good experience,” Chesterton High School sophomore Taylor Shvedas said. “I learned that vaping is very bad,” with four months of vaping having the same adverse impact on health as one year of smoking.

Classmate Peyton Moskalick agreed. “They showed us a jar of tar, and the building on it was just insane.”

The jar, which originally held coffee, was filled with tar from one year of smoking.

Learning about performing cesarean sections and maintaining a sterile field was also interesting, Moskalick said. “They gowned us and showed us where to keep our hands,” she said. “This will open a lot of eyes.”

“C-sections are fun,” Ivy Tech surgical tech student Brandy Smith told the students. “I did my first twins last week.”

“Once that baby’s out, everything goes fast,” she said.

Smith, of Hammond, said being a surgical tech is so interesting it doesn’t seem like work to her. “Nothing is the same as looking into an actual body. Everybody is different. Every procedure is different.”

Marsha Ericks, surgical tech program chair at Ivy Tech, watched as the high schoolers tried their hand at a laparoscopic surgery simulator. “If you play with computers, you’re probably pretty talented at this,” she said.

“It teaches you that eye-hand coordination,” Ivy Tech student Maddy Doot, of St. John, said.

Ericks said the exposure to a wide variety of healthcare careers is a good experience for the high schoolers. “It’s a great introductory window for them to see what we offer here at Ivy Tech,” she said. “Nursing’s not for everybody.”

Yvonne Rodriguez, program chair for paramedic services, said students can expect to be hired quickly. “We just had a recruiter in here this week,” she said. “There’s a nationwide shortage.”

It’s a familiar story for healthcare fields, Ericks said, with jobs readily available.

Pharmacy technicians are in such high demand that the state’s Next Level Jobs program will pay the tuition for qualifying students, said Mindy Rouse, administrative for the School of Health Sciences at Ivy Tech. “The sky’s the limit with this degree.”

Nursing department chair Sarah Darrell watched as high school students toured the nursing simulation lab. “We’re able to put students in real-life situations and do no harm to people,” she said. As she talked, one of the mannequins was sweating and crying.

“They talk, they sweat, they have blood pressure. Their pupils even dilate,” Darrell said. One even gives birth.

“We use virtual reality. We use augmented reality,” she said. In one scenario, the mannequin was made up to look extensively bruised and battered. That was to portray a suicidal patient who crashed a car, something a nurse might deal with in a hospital setting.

Viki Pavlakic, department chair for medical assisting, explained her students go on to help in doctor’s offices, gathering vital statistics, drawing blood and administering immunizations.

“You get to establish that rapport with your patients,” she said, watching the results of treatment. “I like the one-on-one working with my patients.”

Lorna Marcus, chair of the healthcare specialist department, trains certified nursing assistants. To help them understand the patient experience, she has students try on Vaseline-covered glasses to see what poor vision is like. They also brush each others’ teeth to gain more compassion and understanding of what their patients experience.

Helping patients with dementia is a rapidly growing field. Some of the students take the eight-week course to assist family members.

Arin Koontz, respiratory director at Northwest Health-Porter, talked about the effects of smoking and vaping.

“You should see what the lungs look like when you’re in surgery. They’re black. They’re just covered in tar,” Ericks said.

Koontz runs a pulmonary rehab program. “It’s basically physical therapy for their lungs,” she said, to improve patients’ quality of life.

Student-led build explores new ways to use eastern redcedar

A College of Architecture project has repurposed invasive eastern redcedar trees to create Mizer Ruin, a micro-dwelling structure at Cedar Point Biological Station near Ogallala.

The 200-square-foot structure was developed by students through design-build studios led by Jason Griffiths, associate professor of architecture. The project was conceived in a 2018 third-year studio and is nearing completion. Watch the video above to learn more about the student-led project.
